Artificial intelligence ethical awareness according to the core competency level among dental hygiene students

Objectives: This study investigated the ethical awareness regarding artificial intelligence (AI) among dental hygiene students based on core competency levels and proposed a competency-based educational approach to improve AI ethical awareness. Methods: Eighty-six dental hygiene students participated in the study and provided informed consent. The core competency survey tool included innovation, communication, relations, and services. The AI ​​ethical awareness survey tool was divided into eight categories, each with 24 questions: responsibility, stability and reliability, non-discrimination, transparency and explainability, people-centered service, employment, tolerance and limits, and robot rights. Results: The group with high core competency had higher levels of AI ethical awareness (p<0.05), particularly in terms of responsibility, transparency, and peoplecentered service. The level of AI ethical awareness was significantly correlated with the relationship competency and service competency (p<0.05). Conclusions: These results highlight the association between AI ethical awareness and core competencies. These results suggest that competency-based education in universities is critical for improving AI ethical awareness. Furthermore, we intend to use the findings as preliminary data to suggest a direction for competency-centered education to improve AI ethical awareness.

Challenges of adhering to scientific research ethics in the artificial intelligence applications- a study on a sample of algerian researchers

This study aims to explore the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the accuracy and efficiency of scientific research, while focusing on the ethical challenges associated with it. It also seeks to assess the level of awareness of AI ethics among Algerian researchers and the adequacy of current policies in dealing with these challenges, such as issues of plagiarism, privacy violation, and biased results. This will provide a deeper understanding of the reality of scientific research in Algeria in light of rapid technological developments. An electronic questionnaire was used, targeting a group of Algerian researchers, reaching a sample size of 623 individuals. Through this questionnaire, we aimed to collect data that would enable us to provide recommendations to enhance the responsible and ethical use of AI tools while maintaining the integrity and reliability of scientific research. The study found that the respondents demonstrated varying levels of awareness of the ethical implications of using AI in their research, with a lack of adequate training and resources to help researchers deal with the ethical complexities of AI-based research. The study also confirms that current ethical policies and regulations in Algeria are insufficient to effectively address the challenges posed by AI. This calls for the establishment of a comprehensive legal framework in the near future and the updating of ethical guidelines to regulate the use of AI in academic research.

Values in Narratives: Religious Education as an Exercise in Emotional Rationality

The domain of education deals with the issue of the possibility of a person’s development so that the person would learn to become more human through the educational process. An integral part of a person’s development is first and foremost the dimension of an individual’s integration into society. Education for values plays an indispensable role in education. The technical aspect of education—as John Macmurray described it—has its foundation in instrumental rationality, aiming at the realization of utilitarian values in order to achieve the necessary social cooperation for the purpose of an easier coexistence. That so-called instrumental conception of life has given birth to a special type of the contemporary human being, homo faber. If, however, we strive to achieve the complete development of a human being through education, which is more fully realized only in the communion of people in the forms of friendship, fellowship and love, this instrumental conception requires enrichment through a communitarian conception of life, aimed at the realization of intrinsic values. In that sense, this article explores the contemplative and relational aspects of education from the perspective of religious education, which, according to John Macmurray, are based on the emotional level of rationality which results in the acquisition and adoption of intrinsic individual and inter-individual values. The aim of this article is to show that when it comes to education, these values are best conveyed through narratives. The article also attempts to shed light on the way students internalize and personalize intrinsic values through their emotional familiarity with the narratives, and especially with the value of reciprocity, which is key to authentic religious practice, and thus also to ethical awareness, which is important for the formation of moral awareness and character of a human being. Furthermore, the article explores the extent to which narratives as a form of religious knowledge are important in religious education, and in which they contribute to the formation of students’ opinions, attitudes and identities as transmitters of religious truths. Narratives notably carry a strong potential for the spiritual transformation of one’s personal and social life in such a way that they can motivate students to accept and realize certain religious and moral practices through experiential touching of values. Examples of narratives used in religious education textbooks in secondary schools in Croatia reveal how much they actually contribute to the goals of religious education in terms of education for intrinsic individual and inter-individual values.

Updating a Code for Teaching Ethical Visualizations

The prevalent paradigm for understanding what constitutes a ‘good’ data visualization, and what we are likely teaching business students, relates to a conventional wisdom of efficiency, clarity, transparency, and faithful representation of truth. Teaching about the ethics of visualizations seems to be largely absent from business school curricula. This paper suggests that business students who make and use visualizations should be taught to use a code of ethics for visualizations based not only on conventional wisdom, but also on ideas from the Machine Learning/AI and ‘ethical visualizations’ communities. Elaborating on Sheppard’s code, the code suggested here incorporates ideas about bias, transparency, user agency, and privacy. Ethical awareness and practice become even more important as more data collection, processing, and visualization is shifted to Machine Learning and Generative AI. A threshold model is adapted to understand when visualization decisions require more scrutiny. Ideas from the code and the threshold model are used to analyze choices made by the CDC’s COVID-19 Rapid Response Team for an early pandemic visualization that circulated widely beyond the initial report in which it appeared. This and other examples underscore the need for business professionals to consider their visualizations from the perspective of the code.

The Role of Psychological & Philosophical Counseling in Technology Adoption in Education

The rapid advancement of technology has significantly impacted education, necessitating effective integration strategies. This chapter explores the essential role of psychological and philosophical counseling in the adoption of technology in education. Integrating technology in educational settings is complex, involving cognitive, emotional, and ethical dimensions. The conceptual framework combines psychological strategies to address resistance, enhance motivation, and reduce anxiety, with philosophical approaches to promote critical thinking and ethical reflection. The study utilizes quantitative surveys and a comprehensive literature review to assess attitudes, stress levels, and ethical considerations among educators, students, and administrators. Findings suggest that psychological counseling effectively reduces resistance and anxiety, while philosophical counseling fosters critical engagement and ethical awareness. The combined approach of both counseling types provides a holistic support system, ensuring successful and thoughtful technology integration. Recommendations emphasize the need for interdisciplinary collaboration and holistic interventions to enhance educational outcomes and support all stakeholders in the adoption process.

Preparing Adaptive Graduates, Islamic and Professional in the Era Society 5.0

Abstract. The evolution of Society 5.0, characterized by advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT), necessitates that Islamic higher education institutions adapt to these changes. General Background: The Faculty of Islamic Studies at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidoarjo (UMSIDA) aims to produce graduates who possess both Islamic values and professional competencies, particularly in AI. Knowledge Gap: However, there is a lack of curricula that effectively integrate AI with ethical considerations rooted in Islamic teachings. Aims: This paper proposes a development plan to enhance curricula, faculty competencies, and the responsible integration of AI. Results: The findings emphasize the need for graduates to collaborate effectively with AI while maintaining ethical standards. Novelty: This study introduces a strategic vision for 2032, focusing on innovative curriculum design and faculty development in line with Islamic principles. Infrastructure Development and Donation Culture in the Gaza Strip

ABSTRACTInfrastructure consists of interlinked and nested sociotechnical systems, the construction, maintenance, and repair of which requires considerable ongoing outlays of material resources, technical know‐how and throughput, and political will. Building upon “broken world” approaches, this research uses qualitative methods to study infrastructure development, breakdown, and repair through the lens of a particular collaborative humanitarian initiative involving the public health sector in the Gaza Strip. Findings from this research suggest that a lack of donation ethics combined with policies that privilege “service over stuff” enable and exacerbate key infrastructural breakdowns, perpetuate maladaptive behaviors, inhibit meaningful development, and reinforce dominant harmful regimes. The paper concludes by arguing for increased critical and ethical awareness of donation culture and its consequences, a reconsideration of development policies that limit funding support to services rather than material and infrastructure supports, and an emphasis on building local capacity for maintenance and repair work.

Responsibility and Care in AI/ML Education: A Collaborative Approach to Ethical Awareness

ABSTRACTThe rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) has led to significant innovations but also raised ethical concerns. Researchers and students designed an ethical online game in this study to spread awareness about making informed decisions when using AI and ML. Conducted within a directed research group (DRG) curricular method, the study engages students as co‐researchers to develop a game, from developing ideas to playtesting the game in a class setting. The study employs a quantitative methodology to analyze a survey that 32 students, each with diverse backgrounds and knowledge in game development, conducted after each class session over three semesters. Findings indicate that self‐reported engagement changes depending on the activities done in each session, with students feeling capable of contributing to research and game design.

Utilizing ChatGPT in Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses

The current uses, potential risks, and practical recommendations for using chat generative pre-trained transformers (ChatGPT) in systematic reviews (SRs) and meta-analyses (MAs) are reviewed in this article. The findings of prior research suggest that, for tasks such as literature screening and information extraction, ChatGPT can match or exceed the performance of human experts. However, for complex tasks such as risk of bias assessment, its performance remains significantly limited, underscoring the critical role of human expertise. The use of ChatGPT as an adjunct tool in SRs and MAs requires careful planning and the implementation of strict quality control and validation mechanisms to mitigate potential errors such as those arising from artificial intelligence (AI) 'hallucinations'. This paper also provides specific recommendations for optimizing human-AI collaboration in SRs and MAs. Assessing the specific context of each task and implementing the most appropriate strategies are critical when using ChatGPT in support of research goals. Furthermore, transparency regarding the use of ChatGPT in research reports is essential to maintaining research integrity. Close attention to ethical norms, including issues of privacy, bias, and fairness, is also imperative. Finally, from a human-centered perspective, this paper emphasizes the importance of researchers cultivating continuous self-iteration, prompt engineering skills, critical thinking, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and ethical awareness skills with the goals of: continuously optimizing human-AI collaboration models within reasonable and compliant norms, enhancing the complex-task performance of AI tools such as ChatGPT, and, ultimately, achieving greater efficiency through technological innovative while upholding scientific rigor.

Medical ethics education and awareness: Insights from a study among pakistani medical students and faculty members

This study investigated the knowledge and attitudes towards medical ethics among medical and dental students and faculty members at five medical universities in Karachi, Pakistan. Utilizing a cross-sectional, questionnaire-based design, the research included 438 participants. The study found that while a majority of participants were aware of the four basic principles of medical ethics, only 15.3% could correctly identify all of them. The primary mode of ethics education was through lectures and seminars, with less emphasis on interactive learning methods. The study also revealed a significant gap in faculty engagement and understanding of medical ethics. Although the majority of participants were aware of their institution's ethics committee, a significant proportion were unaware of its existence. The study highlights the need to enhance faculty engagement, address gaps in comprehensive understanding, adopt more interactive teaching methods, and increase the curricular emphasis on medical ethics in Pakistan.

This study aimed to explore the contents for the education and training to enhance the digital competencies of childcare teachers through Importance Performance Analysis (IPA), which compares the importance of digital competencies perceived by childcare teachers with their own evaluation of their competencies, i.e., the level of performance. As a result of analyzing the survey data of 397 childcare teachers, it was confirmed that the respondents perceived their own competencies (performance) as relatively low compared to the importance of digital competencies. In addition, it was found that in order to foster the digital competencies of childcare teachers, it is an urgent task to include in education and training the production of digital content for teaching and learning of young children, the creation of a digital environment suitable for young children, the management of SNS information, and the collection and analysis of digital data. Tasks that require gradual improvement include a positive attitude toward the production of digital content, the utilization and reconstruction of digital content, the evaluation of virtual/augmented reality content suitable for young children, the use of online communication platforms, the ethical awareness of digital works and communication, the understanding of changes in the digital society, and efforts to foster digital competencies. Finally, it was suggested that the current status and needs of digital competencies of childcare teachers should be specifically reflected when organizing and operating digital education and training programs for the teachers.

Analisis Semantik Konsep Rezeki dalam Tafsir Al-Misbah dan Implikasinya dalam Konteks Kognitif dan Etis

This study examines Quraish Shihab’s interpretation of the concept of rizq in Tafsir al-Misbah through the lens of Jean Piaget’s cognitive development theory and Lev Vygotsky’s socio-cognitive theory. The academic problem addressed is how the concept of rizq, involving effort, prayer, and social interaction, can be understood from the perspective of cognitive development and social ethics. The study aims to fill the gap in tafsir analysis by incorporating psychological approaches, particularly in understanding how theological thoughts on rizq influence cognitive development and the formation of individual ethics. The research method used is textual analysis of Tafsir al-Misbah with theoretical approaches from Piaget and Vygotsky, exploring both cognitive and ethical aspects in the process of acquiring rizq. The novelty of this research lies in applying psychological developmental theories to tafsir analysis, a rarely undertaken approach in Quranic exegesis studies. The results indicate that Quraish Shihab's interpretation of rizq encompasses cognitive aspects that encourage logical and abstract thinking about effort and prayer, as well as ethical aspects that emphasize social responsibility and integrity in the pursuit of sustenance. This tafsir promotes the development of a proactive mindset and a strong ethical awareness through social interaction within the community.

Objectives This study was conducted to identify the factors predicting the intention of nursing students to care for patients with emerging infectious diseases and to develop a plan for educating nursing students to care for patients with emerging infectious diseases. Methods In this study, 147 third- and fourth-year nursing students attending the College of Nursing participated from October to November 2023, and data were collected through an online platform. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson's correlation, and hierarchical regression analysis using the IBM SPSS 25.0 program. Results As a result of the study, The intention of nursing students to care for patients with emerging infectious diseases was 1.41 points, behavioral belief was 0.95 points, control belief was -0.35 points, attitude toward behavior was 1.72 points, and perceived behavioral control was 0.79 points. The perception of emerging infectious diseases was 3.66 points, and the ethical consciousness of emerging infectious diseases was 4.29 points, and there was no significant difference in the intention of nursing students to care for patients with emerging infectious diseases according to the characteristics of the subjects. The significant predictors of the intention of nursing students to care for patients with emerging infectious diseases were attitude toward behavior (β=.449, p<.001), perceived behavioral control (β=.382, p<.001), and ethical consciousness of emerging infectious diseases (β=.154, p=.024), and the explanatory power was 61.3%. Conclusions To improve the intention of nursing students to care for patients with emerging infectious diseases in a positive direction, interventions should be developed to strengthen attitudes and perceived behavioral control towards caring for patients with emerging infectious diseases, and also include content to improve ethical consciousness of emerging infectious diseases. This can contribute to improving the intention of nursing students to care for patients with emerging infectious diseases.

A number of codes of ethics regulate how members of the public accounting profession are expected to behave. The problem of ethical violations that occur in the auditor environment is one of the things that needs to be considered, because it causes public trust in the public accounting profession to decline. The purpose of the written research is to find out: (1) how professional perception influences the level of commitment of the public accounting profession. (2) How ethical awareness influences the dedication of the public accounting profession. The written research is a survey research by distributing questionnaires to the sample directly. Participants in the written research were all auditors working at the Surabaya Public Accounting Office. The sample selected was 40 auditors with a simple sampling technique. Multiple regression analysis was used in the data analysis technique. The conclusion of the written research shows: (1) The commitment of the public accounting profession is significantly and positively influenced by public perception. The auditor's ethical awareness and dedication to the public accounting profession are positively correlated. The implications of the written research are in improving the skills, dedication, and professionalism of auditors working in public accounting offices so that they can provide services expected by the general public. This can be achieved by increasing knowledge in this field, which will influence the perception of the auditor profession. This can be done through training and discussions on the field of auditing.

Assessing and Enhancing Core Competencies in Vocational Education: A Case Study of Senior Students at Guangxi Police College, China

This study evaluates the core competencies of senior students at Guangxi Police College within the framework of higher vocational education and provides guidelines for enhancing these skills. A Likert 5-Point Scale questionnaire based on Lin Chongde’s 2017 framework assessed these competencies among 155 students. A statistical study of the data, concentrating on mean values and standard deviations, indicated variable levels of competence across six dimensions: moral awareness, social responsibility, cultural comprehension, critical thinking, language competency, and aesthetic appreciation. They demonstrated high levels of ethical awareness, social responsibility, cultural understanding, critical thinking, and aesthetic appreciation, while language abilities were graded as medium, indicating a need for targeted improvement. Recommendations include incorporating interactive language activities and industry-specific training, targeting critical thinking through case studies and debate clubs, broadening cultural understanding through international exposure, cultivating aesthetic appreciation through art classes, and increasing social responsibility through community service and internships. Integrating ethics education across all disciplines and practical ethical dilemma workshops were suggested to promote moral awareness. This study presents a complete examination of basic abilities in a vocational environment and offers actionable suggestions for educational improvement. This paper addresses the critical gap in creating vocational training programs for police officers. It focuses on police students' vocational education and provides a detailed assessment of fundamental abilities adapted for law enforcement training. The study findings give an insightful overview of the viable future revisions in vocational programs that match the educational requirements and practical demands of the police profession.

Job Satisfaction and Teaching Effectiveness in Emergency Remote Teaching among Higher Education Faculty

In the rapidly evolving landscape of 21st century education, teacher preparation programs play a significant role in shaping the educators of tomorrow. This qualitative study aims to reveal both the opportunities and limitations of incorporating action research into experiential learning courses within teacher education programs. The researcher conducted a comprehensive thematic analysis to examine and categorize the participants' responses. Through in-depth interviews with 30 senior education students at Batangas State University, The National Engineering University, JPLPC Malvar, Batangas, Philippines, during the academic year 2021-2022, it was revealed that the opportunities arising from action research include enhanced teaching skills and pedagogy, problem-solving and reflective practice, collaborative learning and peer interaction, as well as professional growth and ethical awareness. Moreover, participants also encounter limitations, such as time constraints, resource accessibility, and ethical dilemmas. To address these challenges and capitalize on the opportunities, the study recommends strategies for improved time management, equitable resource access, and ethical training and support within teacher education programs. The study also suggests future research avenues, including longitudinal studies and comparative analyses, to further enhance action research's role in shaping the educators of the future.

A matter of research integrity: The reporting of statistical software used in studies published in nursing journals in 2023

AbstractThe field of nursing has consistently upheld a strong sense of ethical awareness, which can be assumed to be reflected in the performance of nursing research. Adhering to sound research principles involves prioritizing research integrity. This entails being clear and open in detailing the methods used, allowing others to have confidence in both the methods and the resulting outcomes. This methodological review aimed to provide an overview of how statistical software programs have been reported in nursing studies. We screened articles published in the year 2023 in the five top‐ranking and the five bottom‐ranking nursing journals and found 311 that were eligible for this review; that is, quantitative/mixed‐methods/meta‐analyses. The most commonly used statistical software programs in these articles was IBM SPSS Statistics, followed by R. However, one out of 10 studies did not report the software used. Among those that reported the software, the software version was not always reported. Our findings suggest that there is insufficient reporting on the statistical software used for analysing quantitative data in nursing journal publications. From a perspective of maintaining research integrity, this presents an issue, as it jeopardizes transparency, sincerity, and, consequently, the ability to replicate methods and have confidence in the results.

Impact of Ethical Awareness on Engineering Identity Formation Using Ordinary Least Squares Analysis

<p style="text-align:justify">The 21st century marks a world where scientific, humanistic, technological, and societal issues are integrated. The complexity caused by the reciprocal effects among technology, engineering, cultural, and social values raises new ethical problems. This study addresses recent increased attention to the relationship between ethical awareness and engineering identity factors. Participants in this study were 246 undergraduate engineering students enrolled in a research university located in the northeast U.S. Bivariate correlation and ordinary least squares regression were conducted. Bivariate correlations showed that ethical awareness was positively correlated to engineering interest, engineering recognition, and engineering performance/competence, which are the three factors of engineering identity. The OLS regression showed the r2 value for the computed regression equation indicated that there was a non-zero relationship between the set of all independent variables (engineering identity factors, gender, ethnicity, years in school, and first-generation status) and the dependent (ethical awareness) and that the final set of independent variables accounted for approximately 22% of the variation in the dependent variable, Ethical Awareness. Undergraduate engineering education is a key to ensuring engineers will uphold the ethical values of the profession. This study contributes to the practical value of engineering ethics awareness by affirming that engineering identity is sound and should be applied in practice.</p>
