Effect of Pentobarbital and Atropine on Arterial Pressure Response to Ganglion Blocking Agents

Pentobarbital anesthesia produces an important change in the dog's arterial pressure response to TEAC. Without anesthesia, the response, instead of being sharply depressor, is characteristically pressor, or biphasic and mainly pressor. Only occasionally is it depressor. Small doses of TEAC more often elicited depressor responses than did large ones. Mecamylamine, hexamethonium and chlorisondamine usually also failed to cause appreciable lowering of arterial pressure in unanesthetized dogs, but did not show as much pressor activity as did TEAC. Responses to TEAC in hypertensive conscious man showed considerable variability, but the overall pattern of response tended more to resemble that of anesthetized than that of unanesthetized dogs. Atropine caused narrowing of pulse pressure, tachycardia, little change in mean pressure, and the response to TEAC to become mainly depressor—though not to the same degree as did pentobarbital. The greatly augmented depressor activity of ganglion blocking agents after pentobarbital anesthesia probably depends in large part upon nearly complete inhibition of parasympathetic cardioinhibitory activity by the anesthetic agent, and upon partial suppression of sympathetic compensatory reflexes by the ganglion blocking action of pentobarbital. Cardiovascular reactivity measurements are closely dependent on the conditions of the experiment and anesthesia is one of the most important of these conditions.

Stimulation studies of the prefrontal lobe and uncus in man

Electric stimulation of the uncus, cingulate, orbital and superior surface areas of the prefrontal cortex has been carried out in conscious man with special reference to its effect on respiration, state of consciousness and seizures. 2. 2. Studies were made on 24 patients while undergoing selective cortical undercutting in various areas of the frontal lobes for mental disease. 3. 3. Meager changes were noted following stimulation with high voltage and long duration of the cingulate, orbital and superior surface areas of the prefrontal lobes. In one case, stimulation of the cingulate surface produced a marked quieting effect on an agitated patient. 4. 4. Profound changes in respiration, state of consciousness and delayed appearance of seizures followed stimulation of the uncus with relatively low voltage and short duration. 5. 5. The uncal effects appear to be cumulative and when once initiated may continue for variable periods of time.

Effect of Physical Exercise on Internal Carotid Artery Blood Flow After Arterial Reconstruction

The effect of physical exercise on internal carotid artery (ICA) blood flow in conscious man was studied with the aid of electromagnetic flowmetry. A flow probe was implanted on the ICA in 25 patients after reconstruction of the artery. ICA mean blood flow and brachial artery mean blood pressure were continuously monitored in supine (25 patients) and sitting (24 patients) position at rest, during 5-6 minutes exercise on a bicycle ergometer and at rest after exercise. Arterial carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2) was studied in 6/25 work tests in supine and 7/24 in sitting position. Cardiac output was measured at rest and during exercise in 10/25 patients in supine and 8/24 patients in sitting position.In the supine group, ICA flow increased significantly within 1 minute and reached a maximal flow 15% above control flow within 2 minutes after the onset of exercise.
