DENOTATIVE AND CONNOTATIVE MEANING IN VIRGIN VS. CHAD MEME IN KNOW YOUR MEME SITE

This research aims to find out how hidden meanings are conveyed in memes and the type of meme studied is a meme with the Virgin vs. Chad template and other similar template memes namely Swole Doge vs. Cheems on the official meme site and Know Your Meme's official Instagram account. By using descriptive qualitative methods, this research aims to analyze the meaning of denotation and connotation attached to several data. Researchers found 10 memes that use the template Virgin vs. Chad and 10 memes that use the Swole Doge vs. Cheems. The results of the analysis show that the denotational meaning in these memes shows figures that have been arranged and edited as creatively as possible by the creator without describing any further meaning, just figures and text written without context, while the connotative meaning in these memes describe the hidden meanings of the meme, such as how the meme template functions, the role of the figures displayed, and the written text has an implied meaning, whether it is the opinion of the meme maker, public opinion, facts in the field, even there are exaggerated opinions and even false information.

Influencing the attitude towards hand hygiene and face masks by pathogen visualisation during the COVID-19 pandemic

ABSTRACT Pupils need to develop habits of using self-protective and non-pharmaceutical measures in the face of health-threatening conditions. This study set out to investigate pupils’ attitudes towards health-protective measures, such as handwashing and face masks, during the COVID-19 pandemic and compared their connotative meanings after experiencing GloGermTM activities, which visualise the micro world and the way microorganisms spread. The study involved 241 students aged 11–15 who completed a semantic differential before and after participating in practical activities. Factor analysis and non-parametric tests were used to characterise and identify shifts in the pupils’ attitudes. The findings show a noticeable shift in attitude, particularly among girls, towards wearing face masks. The factors identified include connotative meanings such as giving credit to potency, achieving quick results, acknowledging purpose, experiencing uncertainty before the intervention, and evaluating the purpose after the intervention. Personal comfort was also identified as a factor that persisted before and after the intervention. Infectious diseases and pandemic awareness are crucial in today’s world and will remain so in the future. We believe that modelling safe experiences with potential pathogens, particularly in promoting healthy behaviours, can reduce health threats. The results indicate that such an approach has the potential to influence attitudes.

INTEGRATION OF NAMES INTO TEXT IN LÁSZLÓ VÉGEL’S NOVEL TRILOGY

The study examines literary naming, the use of geographical and personal names , and their characteristic vehemency in László Végel’s three-volume series of novels (Neoplanta, avagy az Ígéret Földje (Neoplanta, or the Promise Land), Bűnhődés (Atonement) and Balkáni szépség, avagy Slemil fattyúja (Balkan Beauty or the Bastard of Slemil)). In his urban novel and its sequences, Végel places the action in a multi-ethnic, multi-confessional city, and tells its story from the perspective of the people living there, through their life stories. With the onomastic corpus of the texts, he creates the socio-national background, points out the connection between politics and naming, and the problem of the relationship between identity and personal name. The set of names of the novels originate from a network of real and fictitious names: the streets and institution names to be found at the novel’s scene that have changed throughout history several times, as well as the place- and era-creating character of the real names of historical figures embedded into the text, denotative and connotative meanings attached to the fictitious names (personal, interlocutor and metaphorical names), associations, intertextual aspects provide the opportunity for a new interpretation of the novel.

Functional cognitive linguistics and cognitive stylistics provide the linguistic background and methodological foundations of this paper. The most significant tenet of cognitive stylistics is the proposition that the formation of linguistic structures does not function merely as stylistic embellishments; instead, style represents an integral aspect of textual meaning. Names created by literary naming can be interpreted and analysed as defining elements of style. Following an introduction to the theory of language and style, the paper examines the fundamental issues of translating literary proper names. The most relevant question is whether it is necessary or possible to translate proper names in literary works. The following section presents an analysis of the significance of naming in Krúdy’s prose, followed by an examination of the main types of Krúdy’s names with ironic stylistic purpose. The third section analyses the German translations of Krúdy’s ironic names. In conclusion, it can be stated that the appropriate reproduction of Krúdy’s ironic names, which reflects the stylistic effect and meaning formation of the source language, is a particularly challenging task for translators. It is not uncommon to observe that connotational meanings and shades of meaning present in source language texts are not fully conveyed in translation. In certain instances, pre-existing linguistic coincidences (e.g., Hungarian Rezeda ‘reseda’ – German Reseda ‘reseda’) can assist in the translation process. In other cases, however, the translator’s professionalism, linguistic sophistication, and creativity are crucial to ensure such names’ accurate and effective translation.

Associative Meanings in Semantic Prototypicality of Durian Naming in Jember, East Java, Indonesia

This research aims at revealing the associative meanings of durian naming on the subordinate level. The data of this research are durian names taken from two biggest places producing large number of durian harvesting in Jember, East Java. Employing Leech’s classification of meanings, durian as the semantical prototype is broken down into variously associative meanings. Based on the properties that a durian has, the specialties or distinctive marks come to be the characteristics that are associated to the names given. The result shows that among 30 durian names, they are distributed into 4 associative meanings comprising connotative meaning (19 names), affective meaning (6 names), reflected meaning (3 names), and social meaning (2 names). Those groupings of meanings as the subordinate levels of semantical prototype of durian come to exists due to the associatively mental image or concept of experience proximity.

EXPRESS: Exploring the differences in processing between Chinese emotion and emotion-laden words: A cross-task comparison study.

Affective words can be classified into two types: emotion words (EM words, e.g., "happy") and emotion-laden words (EL words, e.g., "wedding"). Several studies have shown differences in processing between EM and EL words, although results are inconclusive. These two types of words may have representational differences because affective content is an inherent part of the semantic features of EM words (i.e., denotative meaning) but not of EL words, whose affective content is part of their connotative meaning (i.e., these words do not name emotions, but are associated to emotions). In this study, we tested a set of Chinese EM and EL words. Both conditions included positive and negative words. The study involved two tasks, an implicit task, in which emotional content was not relevant (lexical decision task, LDT), and an explicit task, in which the emotional content was relevant (affective categorization task, ACT). Our results showed that participants responded faster to EM words than to EL words. This advantage was mostly observed in the ACT and with negative words. These results reveal differences in processing between EM and EL words which can be related to the greater relevance of affective content in the meaning of EM words compared to EL words.

Analisis Makna Leksikal pada Puisi “Mitos-Mitos Kecemasan” Karya Afrizal Malna

This research aims to determine the lexical meaning of the poem “Myths of Anxiety” by Afrizal Malna. This type of qualitative descriptive research was used in this research, the data source in this research was the poem “Myths of Anxiety” by Afrizal Malna and similar journals. Researchers used data collection techniques by (1) reading the poem “Myths of Anxiety” by Afrizal Malna, (2) marking and writing the lexical meaning of each word in the poem “Myths of Anxiety” by Afrizal Malna. The researcher's steps in data analysis are (1) classifying or grouping words into tables, (2) analyzing the results of grouping words, (3) drawing conclusions based on the results of the analysis carried out. The results of this research show that the equivalent lexical meaning is longer than the connotative meaning and each stanza has a clear different in meaning according to the context of the words used.

Fashion as Communication: Costume Dasiyah at Film Series Gadis Kretek

Film as an audio-visual medium can convey messages verbally and non-verbally. In the filmseries 'Gadis Kretek', the message is communicated through dialogue and visual displays,namely fashion. Dasiyah, as one of the main characters, has iconic fashion compared to othercharacters. Dasiyah Fashion consists of the entire fashion, hair, make-up, and accessories usedby the actress as a costume used as a medium for character communication. Therefore, theauthor is interested in researching the meaning of denotation, connotation, and myths relatedto fashion from each Dasiyah fashion unit using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis. So thisresearch can find out the full meaning of how fashion can communicate your character. It wasfound that fashion can express Dasiyah's life journey and her ideals regarding kretek amidstthe patriarchy are still strong in Javanese culture. Apart from that, through her fashion, Dasiyahcan position herself in society with her socio-economic status as an elite Javanese woman withher trading activities. The fashion worn by Dasiyah is not always stagnant, there is aprogressiveness of character that causes fashion alterations not by Javanese standards.

ANALISIS SEMIOTIKA ROLLAND BARTHES PADA POSTER SERI WEB ΒΙΟΡΙΚ ELLYAS PICAL

ABSTRACT Communication is the process of exchanging and understanding information between two or more parties. Communication can also be conveyed using various media, one of which is using posters. Posters as a communication medium function to convey messages through graphic synthesis. Posters are also works of art in the form of images or letters which are intended to provide information and ensure that the message and information is understood correctly by the audience, including in promoting a biopic web series. How to promote a biopic web series using posters is definitely very helpful in marketing the biopic web series. This research aims to examine and interpret the meaning contained in the poster for the biopic web series "Ellyas Pical". Using descriptive qualitative research methods and semiotics from Roland Barthes to help examine the sign elements and visual elements on posters. The results of this research are regarding the meaning of denotation, connotation and myth related to the biopic web series. Tells a life story based on the true story of a legendary Indonesian boxer, Ellyas Pical. The poster also provides a brief overview of the film and the characters in it. Analysis Semiotic of Meaning Courage in Qaṣīdah (al-Burdah, al- Niffarīyah, al-Mutanabbī, and al-Ahtyar)

This study uses Roland Barthes' semiotic theory to identify the signifiers, signs, and connotative meanings of the word "courage" in these poems. This research uses a qualitative-descriptive approach and a content analysis research design. The data collection techniques used are literature reviews. Primary data is in the <em>Qaṣīdah al-Burdah, Qaṣīdah al-Niffarīyah, Qaṣīdah al-Mutanabbī, </em>and<em> Qaṣīdah al-Ahtyar</em>. Secondary data comes from readings related to the study. The data obtained is reduced, displayed, and verified. The findings show that the semiotic analysis of the word "courage" in the four <em>Qaṣīdahs</em> reveals a testament to the enduring value of courage in guiding Muslims to face challenges and uphold their beliefs in a changing world. The findings of this study offer valuable insights into the rich and nuanced understanding of courage in Islamic culture. These insights can contribute to a deeper appreciation of the Islamic ethical framework and its relevance in contemporary society. In addition, the methodology of this study demonstrates the applicability of semiotic analysis in unearthing deeper meanings embedded in literary and cultural texts.</strong><strong></strong></p><p> </p></td></tr></tbody></table>

A French Adaptation and Validation of Retirement Semantic Differential (RSD).

Retirement is associated with numerous representations, some of them being negative and the other positive. Yet, these representations affect the health of individuals in their transition to retirement. However, although the socio-political context in France favors the emergence of numerous representations of retired people, to our knowledge there is no scale validated in French that would allow us to evaluate them. Thus, the objective of this study was to adapt and validate a scale assessing representations of retired people, called the Retirement Semantic Differential (RSD), for a French population. The scale consists of a series of bipolar adjectives related to retirement, such as "active/passive" and "happy/sad", with participants' responses indicating the connotative meaning, positive or negative, about representations of retirement. A total of 279 participants aged 18 to 55 years, recruited online, completed the adapted version of the RSD. The results show that the scale has good psychometric properties. The analysis found a three-factor model, and some items were removed, resulting in a reduced version of the scale (11 items). The results will be discussed in terms of cultural and socio-political differences. This scale could contribute to a better understanding of the deleterious effects on health of the transition to retirement and serve to improve the effectiveness of interventions aimed at reducing the negative effects of these representations upon young retirees or those preparing for retirement.

Translation of English Instructive Images of COVID-19 in Social Media into Arabic: A Semiotic Study

This study investigates the intersemiotic translation process of specific images used to instruct people concerning COVID-19 disease that are posted on different social media. It also attempts to identify translation strategies employed by translators to convey the meaning from one non-verbal form into an Arabic verbal form. This study depends on a multimodal perspective that combines comprehending the connotative meaning of the image and analyzing it into a different verbal expressive form. It is hypothesized that translators are aware of the translation strategy through which the expression of an image is communicated successfully into Arabic verbal expressions. Translators employ Stetting's strategies that are restricted to media translation and journalistic translation, which is used for transferring the meaning of different forms of media. Five translators participated in this study to translate eight images into Arabic. This study concludes that a sign's detonative and connotative meanings are rendered, whether positively or negatively, to transfer the meaning, whether directly or indirectly.

METHODOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF PHONOLOGICAL CHANGES IN WORDS IN SMALL WORKS

The article examines the methodological possibilities of the phonographic tools used in the comics, stories and feuilletons of the great writer Abdulla Qadiri. The expression of denotative and connotative meanings by means of phonological units, their semantic-stylistic features, the importance of expressiveness in the language of small works is highlighted.

Trends in Mutual Transpositions of Lexical and Grammatical Noun Categories in Russian Language

This study addresses the gap in understanding the lexico-grammatical-structural types of nouns, particularly how lexico-semantic variants gain new connotations during transposition. Drawing upon Babaytseva’s theory of transitivity phenomena and building on Mel’chuk’s text semantic theory, we identify the schemes and mechanisms of transposition relations concerning the lexical and grammatical categories of modern Russian nouns, by analyzing transposition phenomena and their semantic mechanisms in 660 Russian nouns with indefinite denotation and lexical and grammatical status. The research details all possible immigration transpositions of the lexical and grammatical categories of nouns at the minimal context level and their mechanisms. Findings reveal that approximately 27% of the examined nouns carry connotative meanings, encompassing functional-stylistic, cultural-ethnic, and emotional-evaluative facets. Additionally, the transposition of nouns can occur within or between categories. The principal mechanisms of transposition at the syntagmatic level include metaphors and metonymy. Transpositions at the lexical and semantic categories of nouns coincide with several phenomena: changes in the numerical paradigm, phraseologization, connotation, and the unveiling of the noun’s stylistic potential.

Social marketing is a form of marketing created to address various social issues in society. Basically, social marketing has the same principles as commercial marketing in general. Both are forms of persuasive communication programs, where commercial marketing aims to gain financial profits, while social marketing aims to shape changes in behavior, both individuals, groups and social order. Researchers will further explore the moral message content of Consumer Behavior Public Service Advertisements contained in Bagas Dwi Rizqi Hidayat's YouTube content in a content analysis review. The theories used are mass media theory, analysis theory, moral messages, messages, morals, public service advertising theory, advertising, consumer behavior, factors causing consumer behavior, social media, YouTube, semiotic theory, Roland Barthes semiotics. The type of research taken by researchers is descriptive qualitative. The research data collection stage is carrying out the process of observation, documentation and literature research, data reduction results, formulating the problem, presenting the data, which is analyzed by the researcher until the stage of drawing conclusions. The author took five scenes to fulfill the needs of research conducted by researchers based on Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis which emphasizes the search for meaning of denotation, connotation and myth. Based on the results of this research, the researcher concluded that the Public Service Advertisement "Consumptive Behavior" directly describes events in society, especially the behavior of Indonesian people in shopping to the point of ignoring their own needs.

Synodal Discernment on a Catechetical Drama called “Service of Light,” Its Impact on the Integral Education and Edification of Faith of the Laity

Synodality is a vital characteristic of the Catholic Church's life and mission, highlighting joint revitalization through listening, discernment, and active participation. Inspired by this concept, researchers started a study exploring the impact of the "Service of Light," a catechetical drama observed during Easter vigil, on local parishioners within the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia in the Philippines. Employing an exploratory and qualitative approach, the researchers examined the denotative and connotative meanings embedded in images and narratives surrounding this ritual, using Roland Barthes' semiotic model for analysis. The study involved visiting five local Catholic parishes within the archdiocese, conducting purposive sampling for survey interviews, and gathering visuals. Results uncovered meaningful impacts of the Service of Light on the integral Christian education and spiritual edification of the parishioners. The catechetical drama served as a powerful teaching tool that deepened the parishioners’ understanding of Christian doctrine. It helped develop a sense of belonging within their faith community. Moreover, the Service of Light generated spiritual renewal and strengthened individual faith. The ritual's symbolism aroused a deeper connection with God, empowering parishioners to live out their faith more fully in daily life. The Service of Light was acknowledged as a tool of faith that continues to inspire the parishioners to bear fruit for years to come. In conclusion, the study underscores the significance of the Service of Light in parishioners' Christian education and spiritual journey, emphasizing its role in fostering community, deepening understanding of faith, and inspiring personal and communal growth. As a recommendation, the researchers are suggesting future research to explore the perspectives of ordained clergy for a comprehensive understanding of its impact on Christian communities.

Misusing social media can make the process of verifying information abandoned and the information or news consumed by the public even more misleading. This study will discuss the representation of the impact of Hoaxes shown in the film Budi Pekerti by Wregas Bhanuteja. The aim is to analyze how the representation of the effects of Hoaxes depicted through viral content in the movie raises social issues today. This study uses a qualitative approach that is descriptive and uses the Roland Barthes semiotic analysis method through three stages that are presented in analyzing the meaning of signs, namely, the meaning of denotation, connotation, and myth, with data collection techniques, namely non-participant observation and documentation in the form of screen capture. The results of this research in the film Budi Pekerti present the impact of Hoaxes that can lead people to negative perceptions and negative comments quickly, cause cyberbullying and damaged reputation, cause the phenomenon of cancel culture, cause a domino effect and truth that is no longer important in a person's life. This research also provides awareness that you must be wise and ethical in social media by not being easily incited, finding out the truth first, not behaving impulsively, and having a sense of empathy.

Semantic Features of Phraseological Units in English and Uzbek Languages

This article examines the semantic features of phraseological units in English and Uzbek languages, focusing on their classification and distinct characteristics. While phraseological semantics shares similarities with lexical semantics, it exhibits unique traits. The study addresses the knowledge gap in the classification of phraseological units by exploring their broader semantic structure, which transcends denotative and connotative meanings. The research employs a comparative linguistic methodology, analyzing the semantic components of phraseological units in both languages. Findings reveal that phraseological units in English and Uzbek have different types of semantic structures, yet share common elements. Sh. Rakhmatullayev's classification of Uzbek phraseological units into integrity, mixing, and introduction provides a foundational framework. The study identifies three main types of phraseological meanings: idiomatic, idiophraseomatic, and phraseomatic. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the complex nature of phraseological semantics. The implications of this research extend to language teaching and cross-cultural communication, providing a valuable reference for linguists, educators, and translators working with phraseological units in both languages. The study highlights the need for further exploration into the classification and interpretation of phraseological units, encouraging future research in this underexplored area.

Ardalan explores deep issues of love, grief, and culture via these symbols, weaving a story with a wealth of nuance and complexity. The garden is a haven and a symbol of optimism because it demonstrates that love can flourish even in the face of adversity. The red rose symbolizes the beauty and fragility of love, as well as the unescapable suffering that comes with losing someone. The portrayal of Baghdad as a historically and culturally significant city embodies the people's tenacity and enduring spirit. This study reveals how these symbols are more than just literary devices—rather, they are crucial components that raise the novel's thematic depth. By unraveling this symbolic tapestry, the research provides a better understanding of Ardalan's reflection on the human condition, demonstrating the enduring significance of his writing.

Трансформации грамматической основы предложения как средство выражения коннотативных смыслов высказывания

The study aims to identify variability in the forms of expressing the grammatical basis and the features of the connection between the principal parts in the sentence as a factor of connotation at the syntactic level of the Russian language. The article examines various means and ways of presenting the main meaning of an utterance, taking into account additional emotional-expressive, evaluative, and stylistic nuances of the utterance. The work analyzes the forms of the predicate, including those expressed by verbal phraseological units, as a means of connotation, and the fluctuations in the coordination of the subject with the predicate. Special cases of reduction and expansion of the grammatical basis as indicators of the connotative nuances of an utterance are noted. Syntactic connotation is substantiated in the aspect of subjective modality types of the sentence. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that it substantiates the status of syntactic connotation for the first time and specifies the connotative meanings of an utterance depending on the grammatical resources of the sentence. As a result, it has been found that sentences with non-specialized forms of the predicate and with formally unexpressed predicative connection of the principal parts are most prone to connotative complexity.
