After discovery of and infestation of the introduced pine sawfly, Diprioll similis (Hartig), in western North Carolina, a survey was initiated to delineate the distribution of the pest. By combining existing techniques for trapping, an area of ca. 20,700 km2 in parts of three states was surveyed. By the end of the first season, the infestation was found in ca. 15,500 km2. This is the first reported use of pheromone traps as an applied survey technique for this insect.
