ABSTRACTThe present study aims at estimating the relative resilience of tourism-based historic districts to continued tourism development. The data were collected by a questionnaire survey conducted in eight tourism-based historic districts in Nanjing, China. The entropy and analytic hierarchy process method were employed to estimate the relative resilience based on the research framework. The result shows that tourism resilience plays a great role in affecting the overall resilience of tourism-based historic districts. Confucius Temple Historic District, District of Meiyuan Xincun and Presidential Palace are the three with relatively high overall resilience scores. Nanbuting Historic District, District of Hehuatang to the West of Zhonghua Gate have the lowest overall resilience scores. It can be explained by the adaptive cycle of socio-ecological system related to those districts. The districts in the growth phrase have a better resilience than those in the late conservation and early release phrase.
