이문열의 『시인』에 나타난 유교의식과 시인의 저항

본고에서는 이문열의 작품 『시인』에 나타난 유교의식을 살피고, 이를 등장인물인 김병연(삿갓)이 어떤 식으로 받아들이고 저항했는지를 살펴 보고자 한다. 유교는 공자로부터 비롯된 이데올로기라 할 수가 있겠는데, 이 작품에서는 주로 충과 효, 의, 수신제가 등의 실천적 이념으로 드러난다. 그런데 1800년대에 들어서 조선에 세도정치가 극에 달하고, 홍경래의 난이 발생하자 유교윤리는 부패하고 변절되기에 이른다. 따라서 유교라는 종교적 이념이 조선 사회를 보다 획기적이며 안정적으로 만들어 가는 것이 아니라, 얼마든지 퇴색되게 할 수 있음을 천민에 이르기까지 인식하게 된다. 따라서 하층민들은 기존 사회제도에 대한 부정의 식과 함께 의식의 새로운 변환을 기하면서 조선 사회를 비판적으로 바라보는 계기를 마련한다. 특히 김병연의 경우, 조부에게서 비롯한 대역죄를 연좌제로 인해 고스란히 물려받게 됨으로써 입신양명은 물론이거니와 중앙으로 진출할 수 있는 기회 자체가 박탈된다. 따라서 주변으로 밀려날 수밖에 없는 삶을 살아야 하고, 급기야는 주변에조차도 적응하지 못하여 자연으로 나아가는 삶을 살게 된다. 이러한 일련의 과정 속에서 유교윤리는 지속적으로 김병연의 세계관을 흔드는데, 예컨대 유교적 세계관이 팽배한 중앙으로 들어가 집권하여 멸문을 재건하기 위한 기회를 모색할 것인지, 아니면 그 유교윤리에 반한 인생을 살면서 자연 속으로 들어가 노자적인 삶을 살 것인지를 고민하게 된다. 전자는 김병연의 초기 삶에서, 후자는 중년 이후의 삶에서 볼 수 있는 특징이라 하겠다. 요컨대 본고에서는 김병연의 삶에 지대한 영향을 끼친 유교적 세계관을 살피고, 아울러 그것에 어떤 식으로 저항하면서 반유교적 의식을 지니게 됐는지 시인의 행보를 쫓아가면서 살펴보고자 한다.

유교사상에 나타난 화해 개념과 전통

본 연구는 한반도를 비롯한 지구촌 분쟁지역에 화해와 평화를 정착시키기 위한 작업의 일환으로 유교사상에서의 화해 관념을 살펴보았다. 특히 춘추전국시대라고 하는 이른바 ‘전쟁의 시대’에 출범한 공자와 맹자를 중심으로 하는 원시유교에서 전 쟁을 종식시키고 평화를 확보하는 방안에 대한 인식을 고찰하였다. 구체적으로 이들 이 왜 전쟁은 결코 평화를 확보하는 방법이 될 수 없다고 보았는지, 그렇다면 평화 의 구체적인 확보 방법에 대해서는 어떻게 인식했는지를 고찰하였다. 먼저 공자(孔 子)와 이를 계승한 다산 정약용의 인(仁), 서(恕), 화(和) 개념을 화해와 영구적 평화 공존 유지라는 시각에서 검토하고, 이어서, 맹자(孟子)의 핵심 외교원칙론인 반전론 (反戰論)과 사대사소론(事大事小論)의 내용과 의의를 고찰하였다. 나아가 인(仁)/서 (恕)/화(和) 및 사대사소론의 화해와 평화 사상적 전통을 계승하여 현대 중국외교에 서 화해와 평화공존의 외교원칙 노선으로 활용한 사례를 현대 중국 외교의 아버지 저우언라이(周恩來)의 ‘구동존이(求同存異)’ 노선을 통해 고찰하였다.

Uniformity, diversity, harmony, and emotional energy in a Chinese STEM classroom

BackgroundUnderstanding cultural diversity in STEM education is important for inclusivity and teaching STEM literacy for all. We explore diversity at a micro-cultural classroom level involving students’ emotional experiences and interactional practices as they engage with learning, which has received limited attention in naturalistic studies of STEM education, especially in East Asian cultures. In this study, we explore emotional experiences of students during a guided inquiry lesson in a Chinese primary school using an interpretive methodology informed by concepts of emotional energy, uniformity, and harmony. Emotional energy is an individual and collective experience of togetherness and solidarity emerging from successful social interaction. Uniformity and harmony are emotion-related concepts experienced in Confucian heritage cultures. The aims of this study are to explore Chinese students’ emotional experiences during a STEM inquiry lesson and to refine the conceptualization of emotional energy from Confucian cultural perspectives.ResultsIn a STEM inquiry, context knowledge about micro-cultural diversity and the interplay between Chinese emotional experiences and engagement with ideas are explored. Notions of uniformity and harmony are described through cultural practices as they relate to emotional energy. The study contributes to understanding the diversity of emotional energy as a student experience and social form of engagement, during a STEM inquiry activity in a Confucian heritage context.ConclusionsThis study contributes to understandings of student experiences of uniformity, harmony, and variations to intensity of emotional energy during learning via STEM inquiry. Modifications to the conceptualization of emotional energy in STEM education are indicated. Our findings inform an understanding of student emotive experiences of STEM education in East Asian and multi-cultural education systems internationally.

What matters in design? Cultivating undergraduates’ critical thinking through online peer assessment in a Confucian heritage context

Online peer assessment has been proposed as an effective strategy for cultivating critical thinkers in higher education, but there is a dearth of relevant studies in a Confucian heritage context. This study investigated the effects of online peer assessment in a General Education course on the development of critical thinking among Hong Kong undergraduates, with a design characterised by six elements (i.e. online peer assessment training, provision of guiding questions, peer feedback requirements, anonymity, student evaluation of the usefulness of peer feedback and summative use of online peer assessment). Analysis of the participants’ e-journal entries revealed a significant improvement in critical thinking in the experimental groups. Individual follow-up interviews indicated that the participants acknowledged online peer assessment design with the consideration of cultural influence and at the same time made some suggestions for refinement. This study highlights the need to adopt a culturally embedded approach to design online peer assessment to cultivate students’ critical thinking in non-western contexts.

espanolResumen Tomando como punto de partida las condiciones del contexto socio politico donde se origino el brote epidemico del virus SARS-CoV-2, los autores analizan la influencia que tuvo el principio de beneficencia como una de las razones eticas que condujeron al oftalmologo Li Wenliang a alertar a traves de la red social Weibo, sobre el surgimiento de un brote epidemico distinto, por su agresividad, al del SARS. Se asume que dicho principio puede comprenderse a partir de un enfoque donde se conjugan referentes occidentales -la primera formulacion del imperativo categorico kantiano y el legado hipocratico- y orientales -el principio del Ren o humanidad, derivado del pensamiento confuciano-. El articulo concluye senalando que en un mundo interrelacionado donde las practicas medicas tienen fundamentos cientificos universales, es posible tomar decisiones eticas medicas validas para diferentes contextos culturales, siempre y cuando se continue avanzando en el terreno de un dialogo inter-civilizatorio con perspectiva horizontal. EnglishAbstract This article analyzes the influence of the principle of beneficence as one of the ethical reasons that led ophthalmologist Li Wenliang to alert, using the Weibo plaform, about the emergence of an epidemic outbreak different from SARS. Accordingly, we discuss the socio-political context of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic in China. We assume that the principle of beneficence might be understood from an approach combining Western references - the first formulation of the Kantian categorical imperative and the Hippocratic legacy - with Oriental ones - the Ren or humanity, derived from Confucian thought. We conclude that in an interrelated world, with medical practices having universal scientific foundations, it is possible to validate medical ethical decisions from different cultural contexts, as long as progress continues in the field of an inter-civilizational dialogue with a horizontal perspective.

LITERATURE REVIEW ON CONFUCIAN HERITAGE CULTURE IDENTITY IN MALAYSIAN CHINESE PRE-UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

The words Confucian Heritage Culture (CHC) may bring to mind Confucianism. The words may also point to those of Chinese origin. Yes, although CHC evolved from Confucianism, yet it does not mean that it is the original Confucianism. CHC has evolved. Past literature has CHC related studies done mainly in the West and documents the achievements of CHC students (particularly Asian students). They have persistently performed well in international comparative studies of mathematics and science achievement. Nevertheless, these studies cannot be generalised, because globalisation and rapid social change has influenced and shaped the Chinese community in CHC countries, one of which is Malaysia. The present paper presents a literature review of CHC based on a larger study in search of a CHC identity among Malaysian Chinese pre-university students. The literature helped to uncover the underlying characteristics, namely respect, education and perseverance which were then incorporated within appropriate items in a survey instrument in the larger study to investigate CHC among a selected group of students. These underlying characteristics points towards a CHC identity inherent in these students. This paper will not discuss the instrument or the findings of the larger study.

Creating moral winds and nurturing moral growth in a P4C classroom community in Taiwan

In this paper I provide a theoretical framework for conceptualising the use of moral education in P4C by drawing on Ann Sharp’s work. I use this framework to present my own pedagogical action research in an elementary school in Taiwan. I use both quantitative and qualitative data to document students’ moral growth. The results indicate that moral education takes place in a morally stimulating environment, namely, a thinking and caring community of inquiry, with a morally-infused approach to doing P4C in a Confucian society like Taiwan. In this study I employed a Confucian interpretative lens to develop relevant classroom rituals and strategies for creating moral winds in the classroom. The conception of moral education presented in this study provides a glimpse of what P4C classrooms may look like in a global context.

朝鮮時代嶺南家訓研究芻議

 對於韓國境外學者來説，“嶺南”是慶尚道的别稱，也許不曾發現它在朝鮮時代的文教地位。朝鮮知識分子把嶺南稱爲“鄒魯之鄉”，反映當地具備儒家文化發源的條件，與嶺南家訓的大量出現，關係密切。本文分析嶺南家訓採用的文體，發現其多樣化的書寫形式，包含箴銘、書信、詩歌和雜文等；在其題材内容上，揭示儒家經典知識的重新建構過程；從它在鄉村社會裏的流通情況，勾勒嶺南儒學世家在家訓形成上的貢獻。在嶺南當地，家訓不但起到訓戒家人和族人的教育功能，兼能實現古聖賢傳經濟世的宏願。
 As Confucianism spread and matured on the Korean Peninsula, family precepts for Confucian education were developed in the Joseon dynasty (1392-1897). Initial statistics have yielded 296 family precepts dated from the Yeongnam area. They were penned by some 139 authors writing in different formats and genres, including letters, prose, verse, mottos, and inscriptions.
 This paper is an exploration of the genres and construction of Yeongnam family precepts. It also analyzes how the content of Confucian classics served as foundations for family precepts that were intended to be handed down to later generations. This practice was an important boost for Confucianism to become a national value of the Korean people.

Examining the Scientific Argumentation Implemented Through a Social Constructivism-Based Curriculum Designed for Primary Science Education in a Confucian Heritage Culture: A Case Study in Vietnam

This study describes the improvement of a science curriculum based on a social constructivist approach in order to support primary students in a Confucian heritage culture in practicing scientific argumentation. The former design is adjusted by the application of an adapted model of the learning placemat for argumentation and by the formulation of concrete teaching-learning activities which are articulated with the application of the adapted learning placemat. The practice of a designed curriculum unit reveals that the designed curriculum can support the primary students in practicing scientific argumentation and in attaining consensually agreed knowledge. Nevertheless, the study also shows that primary teachers and students in a Confucian heritage culture do not pay much attention to the activities of qualifying and rebutting in scientific argumentation. The study recommends that further developmental research needs to deal with the refined problem of how to improve qualifying and rebutting in scientific argumentation in the practice of science lessons in a Confucian heritage culture.
