The News Media in Raising Conflicts Tension: A Critical Study Toward News Conflict Between Israel and Palestine

<p class="Default"><em><span lang="TR">This study analyzes the news about conflict between Israel and Palestine in online news media Foxnews.com on May 2021. The characteristics of news from these news media have quite specific characteristics, which is a strong tone, using open visualization, inviting debate, and succeeding in getting thousands of comments from the audience. In this point, even though the news is read by many people, it is also has the potential to exacerbate conflict in the field. This study adopts Teun A. van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis method which develops analysis from the microstructure, superstructure, and macrostructure levels. The micro structure level looks at the local meaning of the news text from the choice of diction, sentence structure, and rhetoric. Then, the super structure level examines the news scheme, consisting of introduction, content and conclusion. Furthermore, macro structural analysis tries to see the global meaning of news texts by looking at news topics and the surrounding social context. The results of the study show that the Israel and Palestine conflict is not only due to the conflict of one of the group carrying out the attack. But at the same time it was also caused by hard conflict news, there was trauma to the victims in the conflict, as well as the global security conditions still not stable until now. </span></em><em><span lang="EN-US"> </span></em></p>

News Framing and Platform Affordances in Social Media

ABSTRACT Framing refers to the construction of narratives with specific intentions, emphasizing certain aspects of the story and omitting or obscuring others, thus affecting how audiences perceive social reality. Since the 1960s, journalism researchers have been interested in this phenomenon, developing multiple theories. This research seeks to analyze how framing connects with the affordances of platforms in international conflict news narration on official Instagram and Twitter profiles of Spanish and Qatari media. By examining these platforms, we can delve deeper into the use of framing adapted to the digital environment and explore nuances and implications. To this end, we meticulously analyzed 251 Instagram and Twitter posts from three leading newspapers in both countries, applying grounded theory through an abductive content analysis. This comprehensive approach allowed us to define codes that help us understand how the affordances of the platforms impact the construction of meaning and the establishment of new frames. In conclusion, this study sheds light on how this digital scenario contributes to the deployment of digital frames derived from the unique affordances provided by these platforms, ultimately shaping our perception, and understanding of news narratives and offering insights into the evolving nature of media communications.

Building network agenda in China-U.S. trade conflict news: Transnational comparative study across China, the United States, Singapore and Ireland

Drawing from agenda building theory, this study explores the impact of factors like journalistic culture, national stance and conflict periods on the similarity and dissimilarity of network agendas in China-U.S. trade conflict news across China, the United States, Singapore and Ireland. Findings revealed significant correlations in network agendas across countries, albeit with disparities between China and the United States. Notably, the correlation weakened in both Chinese and U.S. news following the trade war’s eruption.

The Influence of Conflict News on Audience Digital Engagement

ABSTRACT In a competitive digital environment, news outlets employ attention-gaining strategies, including the portrayal of conflict. Yet such coverage may backfire. Using an experiment comparing exposure to disagreeable or uncivil conflict news, we examine how articles with different types of conflict relate to intended news engagement through the mediating variables of perceived incivility, news source credibility, and/or surveillance emotions and test the moderating effects of conflict avoidance. We find that in textual, digital settings, uncivil conflict news is high risk and low reward: perceived incivility can increase engagement through surveillance emotions but also can decrease engagement directly and through decreased news credibility.

Personalization of Trump and Xi in the U.S.–China trade conflict news: Comparison between the U.S. and China

News personalization in one-party dominant countries has been understudied or often analyzed through a Western lens. This study unpacked this phenomenon in one-party dominant country with the theory of leadership cult and soft power and compared news personalization of Xi Jinping in China with that of Donald Trump in the U.S. against the backdrop of the U.S.–China trade conflict. This study also investigated the influence of press ideology, political–geographical scope of news coverage and the trade conflict period on the presence and valence of personalization within each country. Results showed that leadership personalization was less prominent in China than in the U.S. The manifestation of news personalization in the U.S. was affected more by press ideology, while contextual factors, such as news political scope and the conflict period, played bigger roles in China. These findings provide insights into how news personalization is displayed in divergent political and media systems.

ANALISIS FRAMING MODEL ROBERT N. ENTMAN TENTANG KONFLIK RUSIA DAN UKRAINA PADA MEDIA ONLINE THE WASHINGTON POST DAN XINHUA NEWS

This article discussed the Framing Analysis of Russian and Ukrainian Conflict News on the online media Xinhua News and The Washington Post April 7, 2022 edition. The study used a constructive paradigm and media representation using the Robert N. Entman Framing analysis method with the assumption that framing had two major dimensions, selection, and emphasis of issues. The study used a qualitative analysis method which aimed to find out how the packaging of news from the Xinhua News and The Washington Post media were opposite each other. The results of the study showed that there were differences in the emphasis on issues in the two online media The Washington Post and Xinhua News. The Washington Post's news framing blamed Russia as a war crime actor for its invasion of Ukraine, while Xinhua News said that the root causes of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine were Russia's continued expansion of the US-led NATO.

Reading Twitter in the Newsroom: Web 2.0 and Traditional-Media Reporting of Conflicts

Social media changes traditional-media news on conflicts. Online posts by citizen journalists — first-hand witnesses of conflict events — change the extent, tonality, and content of traditional-media reporting of conflicts. Using an exogenous and excludable variation in social-media posts in Israel and Palestine, driven by internet outages as a result of lightning strikes and technical failures, we show that, when social media in the conflict zone is not muted by internet outages, conflict news stories on US TV are more numerous and longer. Text analyses reveal that these stories have higher emotional intensity and focus more on the suffering of civilians and less on the role of US foreign policy or elections. The results suggest that social-media-driven democratization of the conflict news, i.e., the shift of focus from information provided by war gatekeepers to information from ordinary people, helps the narrative on the side of the conflict that has more civilian casualties.

Peran Media Daring pada Konflik Sumber Daya Alam di Riau

This article discusses the role of online media in natural resource conflicts in Riau during 2016-2018. The conflict has always been at national highest position, even though there are 323 online media that should be able to accelerate conflict resolution. The research is conducted using qualitative content analysis with data from the annual report on conflict news in 2016-2018, and analyzed based on news content and media trends. The findings show that online media plays a function of conflict diminisher for economic interests. In the process, there are parties involved, namely investors, local communities, media, and the government.

Effect of doctor-patient news-induced moral judgments on pain empathy for doctors and patients in China.

Pain empathy's preferential nature tends to trigger prejudice and intergroup conflicts. Given the current degree of proliferation of doctor-patient conflict news in China, this study aims to determine whether readers of doctor-patient news-initiated moral judgments prefer pain empathy for doctors or patients. This study utilized localized doctor-patient news with high or low moral performance (based on morality ratings of patients' behaviors) as moral-judgment-eliciting materials, and painful pictures as pain empathy-eliciting materials. The event-related potential (ERP) technique was utilized to assess moral judgment's effect on the cognitive empathy component and to investigate electroencephalogram signals' accuracy in classifying four brain response patterns when facing doctor or patient is experiencing or not experiencing pain. Under low moral text material, participants exhibited smaller mean wave amplitude of positive 300 (P3) and late positive potential (LPP) to painful pictures than non-painful pictures when facing patients; under high moral text material, participants exhibited larger mean wave amplitude of P3 and LPP to painful pictures than non-painful pictures when facing doctors. Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals' classification accuracy was significant in 0-1,000 ms in both high and low moral judgments, but the classification accuracy was higher in low moral judgments in some cognitive empathy stages (0.51, 0.53-0.55, 0.66-0.79, and 0.88-1 s). Under low moral judgment, individuals pay less attention to the patient's (perpetrator's) pain; under high moral judgment, individuals empathize with the doctor (the person praised), showing that news-induced moral judgment can sway readers' empathy for different social groups. In cognitive empathy, individuals' brain representations are more discriminatory under low than high moral judgments when confronted with pain by doctors and patients, which provides insight into objectively recognizing group bias.

The cause of this research discussed is the many problems of interest to readers of middle eastern news on several YouTube channels. His research aims to describe the text of the Middle East conflict news study Wacana Theo Van Leeuwen Discourse. Descriptive methods are used as a type of research. The data obtained is a sentence in the main news text of the Middle East conflict on YouTube. The researcher himself performs the instrument. In the data collection technique using the recording technique, one of them is orthographic sorting power. The results of his research are the first, in writing the comments of the audience, writing words by bringing up parties who have the authority to be involved in the news. Second, not all of Leeuwen's theories are contained in news texts. Third, Leeuwen's approach is described in the news text of the Middle East conflict based on the speech conveyed.

Menelisik Hoaks Dalam Pemberitaan Konflik Kashmir Di Portal Berita Tahun 2019-2020

<p><em>In this era of disruption or digital, various information can be accessed and read widely by anyone connected to the internet, encompassing conflict news in a Country in any part of the world. Unfortunately hoax or fake news is also rampant in cyberspace (online) including appearing in news portals. The assessment of a news story containing hoax information can be seen from several principles of assessment, most fundamentally the inaccuracy in preaching an issue (5W+H: Journalism pattern) in this context is the Kashmir conflict. This has the potential to disrupt mutual harmony, between citizens and between countries because it is charged with humanitarian values or sensitive matters such as religion and belief. The clearest implication is that hoax or fake news can create polarization among the public. Often it seems that some people believe that the hoax is true or does not contain lies, this is what is called as post-truth era. Based on this research the article was created with the aim of finding out if the news hoax kashmir conflict also appeared in the news portal. If so, how and why does the news appear on the news portal. </em>Subsequently,<em> this research article using qualitative research approaches and methods, collecting data online document studies that are news on news portals. The selected case is an identified report containing lies about the Kashmir conflict in the period 2019 – 2020. In sum, based on the data of this study concluded that news portals also do not escape the news hoax, with a variety of news. This happens allegedly to harness the momentum of the conflict in an attempt to attract readers. This is believed to have the potential to greatly polarize public opinion about the Kashmir conflict.</em></p>

Ethnic Orientation over Ethical Underpinnings: Emerging Trends of the Ethiopian Media Landscape

ABSTRACT The study aims to assess the interplay between ethnic identity politics and editorial independence of the six purposively selected ethnic-based Ethiopian media through the context of conflict reporting. In so doing, a total of 188 conflict news stories were collected from the selected television outlets and subjected to quantitative content analysis. Descriptive statistics of percentage and a non-parametric test of Chi-square were computed to see the extent and distributions of different variables across categories, and interpretations were mainly made in light of the constructs of social identity theory and hierarchy of influences model. Journalism of activism has become an emerging trend so that the ethnic orientation seems to overwhelm the ethical underpinnings. Ethnically affiliated polarization and political parallelism seem to prevail in the media landscape. Journalists’ professional identity appears to be compromised at the expense of ethnic solidarity. This was intensified by prominence by placement, bias by omission and source selection bias, in-group favoritism and out-group derogation, strategic alliance to other groups and out lauding exclusive victimization in reporting conflicts.

Beyond verification: Flesh witnessing and the significance of embodiment in conflict news

Platform journalism in the global North is caught within a fragile political economy of emotion and attention, defined, on the one hand, by the proliferation of user-generated, affective news and, on the other, by the risk of fake news and a technocratic commitment to verification. While the field of Journalism Studies has already engaged in rich debates on how to rethink the truth conditions of user-generated content (UGC) in platform journalism, we argue that it has missed out on the ethico-political function of UGC as testimonials of lives-at-risk. If we wish to recognize and act on UGC as techno-social practices of witnessing human pain and death, we propose, then we need to push further the conceptual and analytical boundaries of the field. In this paper, we do this by introducing a view of UGC as flesh witnessing, that is as embodied and mobile testimonies of vulnerable others that, enabled by smartphones, enter global news environments as appeals to attention and action. Drawing on examples from the Syrian conflict, we provide an analysis of the narrative strategies through which flesh witnessing acquires truth-telling authority and we reflect on what is gained and lost in the process. Western story-telling, we conclude, strategically co-opts the affective dimension of flesh witnessing – its focus on child innocence, heroic martyrdom or the data aesthetics of destruction – and selectively minimizes its urgency by downplaying or effacing the bodies of non-western witnesses. This preoccupation with verification should not be subject to geopolitical formulations and needs to be combined with an explicit acknowledgement of the embodied voices of conflict as testimonies of the flesh whose often mortal vulnerability is, in fact, the very condition of possibility upon which western broadcasting rests.

Negative Impoliteness and Reconstruction of Identity: Cyberpragmatics Analysis of Palestinian Conflict News Comments on Arab Youtube Channel

This study aims to explain the negative impoliteness in the comments on the news of the Palestinian conflict on the Arab Youtube channel. This descriptive qualitative research took the source of data in the form of 5 news of the attack on the Al-Aqsa mosque complex by the Israeli military on the Al Jazeera youtube channel as a data source. The internet archive documentation technique and free-of-conversation listening technique were used at the data collection stage. Meanwhile, the identity method by referring to the stages of qualitative analysis was used as a guide in data analysis. The researchers found 310 negative impoliteness speeches consisting of 5 types: frighten found at 17 speeches (6%); condescend, scorn or ridicule at 113 speeches (36%); invade the other’s space at 72 speeches (23%); explicitly associate the others with negative aspect at 97 speeches (31%); put the other’s indebtedness on record at 11 speeches (4%). The negative impoliteness has a context in the form of criticism of the political policies of Arab countries in responding to the Palestinian conflict. Speakers seek to construct a new community identity for Arab countries in the context of fighting against the Israeli occupation of Palestine.

Participant’s Roles and Cognitive Relations in Niger Delta Conflict News Discourse

Media studies on Niger Delta (ND) conflict discourse have largely utilized stylistic, pragmatic, and critical discourse analytical tools in exploring media representation of news actors and ideologies in news texts but have not accommodated such issues as participants’ roles and cognitive relations in the discourse. This paper analyses the contexts of ND conflict news reporting with a view to revealing not only the participant’s role relations involved, but also the lexico-semantic resources they are characterized by. Forty newspaper reports on ND conflicts (20 from four ND-based newspapers— The Tide, New Waves, The Pointer and Pioneer, and 20 from four national newspapers— The Punch, The Guardian, Vanguard and THISDAY), published between 2003 and 2009, were sampled and subjected to discourse analysis, with insights from van Dijk’s context models and aspects of relational semantics. Four types of role were identified, viz. interactional (embracing the participants in conflict), communicative (relating to the production roles), social (involving group membership), and instrumental (dealing with the entities utilized in actualizing specific goals). The cognitive foci of these roles are associated with participants’ goals and beliefs, and these inform the participants’ position and hence role in the conflict events. Linguistically, the interactional and social roles are marked by synonymous and converse lexical items, while the communicative and instrumental roles are indexed by homonymous and antonymous lexical features. The findings corroborate the fact that there is an interaction between participant roles and cognitive relations in the ND conflict events reported in Nigerian newspapers.

Some media have their own opinions in response to the impact of the conflict between North Korea and South Korea.Some experts argue that the conflict has a positive function and negative one. However, the mindset of conflict theory opposites with structural functional theory. Functional Theory and structural theory, both equally likely to focus on their own variables and ignore variables of concern to other theories. In an effort to reconcile these two theories, the conflict can contribute to the integration and reverse integration can also result in conflict (Bolter and Grusin, 2000). .This research uses discourse analysis to answer the problem. Its typically, the expansion of the meaning of the term is associated with a broader context which affects the meaning of the term is associated with a broader context which affects the meaning of a whole series of expressions.Internet gives impacts to the conflict between North – South Korean. Narrating African conflict news: An intercultural analysis of Burundi’s 2015 coup

This article adopts an intercultural narrative approach to investigate how the 2015 crisis in Burundi was represented in five online news outlets: The Guardian, the United Kingdom (English); Le Monde, France (French); Le Soir, Belgium (French); The Daily Nation, Kenya (English); and Le Renouveau, Burundi (French). As the analysis demonstrates, all the outlets, including the African ones, adopt essentialised clichés of barbaric perpetrators and innocent victims, embroiled in ethnic conflict. Various configurations of these elements of the story are identified as it travels from one context to another. In general, the international outlets focus on a brutal dictator and a passive, victimised mass, but this narrative is reversed in the government-run Burundian outlet, which assigns barbarism to the protestors and legitimacy to the president. The Daily Nation is unique in framing these elements within a broader international narrative, demonstrating Burundi’s relative vulnerability to international (neoimperial) actors. In the final discussion, the article considers how Western journalism can learn from this cross-cultural analysis, drawing on Venuti’s (1995) concepts of foreignisation and domestication. It is argued that The Daily Nation’s emphasis on neoimperial influence on Burundi may be a form of domestication to Kenyan readers but would undoubtedly be considered a foreignising strategy to Western European readers, as it would alert them to the injustices of supposedly legitimate international (Western) institutions. While recognising the challenges of such a strategy in journalism, it is argued that news outlets should nonetheless consider presenting African conflict news using less stereotyped narratives, informed by a postcolonial interpretative lens.

Media, War and Peace: Towards Peace Journalism Strategies in Pakistan

In this article, the researchers have examined various factors that affect reporting of two deadly conflicts in Pakistan and identify peace-oriented strategies to help resolve these conflicts. For this purpose, comprehensive and inclusive interviews were conducted with reporters covering the Taliban conflict and the ethno-political conflict in Karachi. The researchers found that the nature of a conflict and threats from conflict stakeholders were the important factors that shape the production of conflict news. As far as peace journalism strategies are concerned, it was found that a more contextual way of reporting alongside humanization those sufferers would facilitate broader understanding and resolution of these conflicts in Pakistan.

PEMAKNAAN KHALAYAK TERHADAP KONFLIK SELEBRITI PADA TAYANGAN INFOTAINMENT

AbstractInfotainment news about artists that air on television is always unique and interesting to watch. This is caused by conflicts displayed on the television screen. To still be able to exist, celebrities carry out a strategy by creating a variety of controversial and behavioral behaviors which are then widely covered and broadcast by infotainment on television. The conflict news program carried out by these celebrities contained codes for each event. So this study tries to find out how the analysis of public receptions on the contents of messages in the reporting of celebrity conflicts in infotainment. This study uses a reception analysis method by conducting interviews with informants who have met certain criteria. The theory used is the Encoding-Decoding Theory by Stuart Hall. The results show that there are 3 reception categories in celebrity conflict news on the audience.
