A configurational phase transition induced by topological entanglements between long chain molecules

A critical linking number, mc, is defined, and an expression is obtained for the mean square size, R2, of an entangled polymer loop. For linking numbers mc, the existence of a configurational phase transition is demonstrated by the occurrence of a collapsed state in the polymer molecule.

ELECTRONIC CONFIGURATION AND LATTICE COLLAPSE IN Sm COMPOUNDS

A simple analytic model is presented which illustrates the physics of the configurational phase transition occuring in SmS under pressure and in the SmS-YS and SmS-SmAs systems with chemical substitution. The model includes only the largest interactions and is intented to demonstrate the requirements for a configurational phase transition to a stable intermediate valent state.
