As his long term friend and colleague Professor Föll com‐mented “Prof. Dr. Ulrich Gösele has made lasting contributions to science and enriched the pro‐fessional and private lives of many people. He will be missed and remembered as an outstanding scientist and a caring friend”.Our oral presentations were grouped into the fol‐lowing technical sessions. These conference proceedings are for the 29th National Conference of the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA), held in Adelaide, South Australia. The theme of the conference is ‘Evidence to Practice – not always black and white’. Recently the Board of Directors of the International Confederation of Dietetic Associations (ICDA) approved evidence-based dietetics practice as a new international standard of good practice. Evidence-based dietetics practice is about asking questions, systematically finding research evidence, and assessing the validity, applicability and importance of that evidence. This evidence-based information is then combined with the dietitian's expertise and judgment and the client's or community's unique values and circumstances to guide decision-making in dietetics. (ICDA 2010) One of the early fears expressed about evidence-based practice was that it was a ‘cookbook’ approach. This black and white thinking focused on evidence alone and negated the key factors identified in the ICDA definition that are used in combination with evidence to guide decision making – clinical expertise, judgement, values and circumstances. The theme of this conference fits well with the new international standard of good practice as it acknowledges that there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to practice. The 2011 Scientific and Social Program Committee have developed an exciting and contemporary program to inspire delegates to investigate how to explore issues around the translation and implementation of available evidence into practice, especially relating this to their own area of practice. This successful conference program is a reflection of the contribution of many individuals working over an extended period. The 2011 Scientific and Social Program Committee was established two years ago. I would like to thank Chairperson Liz Kellett and her team for their foresight with the theme and acknowledge the substantial effort required to produce a program of this calibre. Tourhosts, the Conference organisers, keep everyone on task and communicate well with authors and committee members. Over 200 abstracts were submitted to the conference, which is a record for the association. I am grateful to the dedicated team of Associate Editors and Scientific Committee Members who have undertaken the rigorous system of blind peer review of the abstracts within a very tight time frame. The DAA National Office makes a substantial contribution and I would like to thank Kate Paul, Amy Lewis and Kristy Parsons for their dedication. As a well-known Australian food and wine destination, Adelaide provides wonderful culinary experiences. The conference dinner at the National Wine Centre promises to be a highlight of the social program. Australian dietitians have mad a substantial contribution to evidence-based practice and the work presented in these proceedings demonstrates that we are at the forefront of the new ICDA international standard for good practice.

AbstractThe 10th International Workshop on Nonlinear Optics and Excitation Kinetics in Semiconductors (NOEKS 10) took place at the University of Paderborn from August 16–19, 2010. It was part of a continuing series of international workshops which started in 1987 in Bad Stuer, Germany, with the previous one being held in 2008 in Klink/Müritz, Germany.The NOEKS 10 was perfectly organized by Torsten Meier and Artur Zrenner and their co‐workers from the Department of Physics at the University of Paderborn. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together scientists working on different aspects of semiconductor optics, to present and discuss new ideas, and stimulate an intense exchange between experiment and theory. With 165 scientists from 17 countries the participation was the highest of the last three conferences. This illustrates the continuing high interest in the area of nonlinear optics and ultrafast dynamics of semiconductors. The main topics of this meeting were ultrafast nonlinear dynamics, low‐dimensional and nano‐structured optoelectronic and photonic systems, solid‐state based quantum optics, spin effects, semiconductor‐based quantum information processing, and novel laser physics. The program committee selected 17 invited talks. In addition, 10 regular talks and 5 upgraded talks have been chosen from the submitted papers, and 78 posters were presented. Special attention was received by experimental and theoretical papers on quantum dots, their spin properties, optical and quantum optical properties including also their coupling to different type of microcavities, i.e. micropillars and photonic crystals. Furthermore, interesting novel results have been presented on different other materials, e.g. epitaxial graphene, organic semiconductors, hybrid organic–inorganic interfaces, as well as photosynthetic complexes and quantum plasmonics.The conference took place in the main lecture hall of the University of Paderborn, allowing a smoothly running program in a very comfortable atmosphere. This setting stimulated many further discussions during the breaks. As a special program highlight, the conference excursion took us to the historic regions of Ostwestfalen‐Lippe and the Teutoburg Forest where we visited the famous rock formation “Externsteine”. Later on, we visited the charming city of Detmold where we attended a guided tour of a local brewery or joined a medieval guided city tour. The conference dinner was held at the restaurant “Schlosswache” in Detmold.NOEKS 10 was sponsored by the University of Paderborn, the Center for Optoelectronics and Photonics Paderborn, the DFG research training group GRK 1464 “Micro‐ and Nanostructures in Optoelectronics and Photonics”, and the Mechonics AG. Wiley‐VCH sponsored a best poster award for a young scientist with a book voucher of EUR 200. The conference chairs together with two members of the program committee, Heinrich Stolz and Peter Michler, selected the poster entitled “Fluctuation Properties of Phonons Generated by Ultrafast Optical Excitation of a Quantum Dot” which was presented by Doris Reiter (University of Münster) for the best poster award.Already during NOEKS 9 the organizer of the next NOEKS workshop (Peter Michler, NOEKS 11 to be held in Stuttgart in 2012) has been determined (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. 14th European X‐Ray Spectrometry Conference (EXRS‐2010)

The 14th European X-Ray Spectrometry Conference (EXRS-2010) was held for the second time in Portugal, now hosted by the Universities of Coimbra, Lisbon and Aveiro in collaboration with the Portuguese Research Foundation and the European Association of X-Ray Spectrometry (EXSA), from June 20 to 25, in Figueira da Foz, close to Coimbra. After 14 years, the International Advisory Committee (IAC) distinguished the Portuguese X-Ray Spectrometry Community once more with this honour. In the meantime, two members of the IAC are missing. They passed away a few years ago: Themis Paradellis, from the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Athens, and Barbara Holynska from the Mining and Metallurgy University in Krakow. They were well remembered. The evolution of this conference series is astonishing. From the 120 participants in Lisbon in 1996, this conference reached in 2010 around 320 participants from 37 countries, who permanently assisted the 16 parallel sessions. The number of young students dominated the event. The most participating country was Portugal, followed by Germany. Exhibitors also participated in mass, showing the highest advances in X-ray technology, hence evidencing the outstanding level of the conference. The whole conference took place in the Congress Palace in Figueira da Foz. The opening session had the presence of the Mayor of the city, the Presidents of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra and the President of the Physics Department. This scientific meeting attracted much attention of the local press. The program included 10 invited talks, 129 oral scientific presentations (+17 short commercial ones) and over 160 poster presentations distributed in three poster sessions. The fruitful discussions after the talks and the relaxing environment during poster sessions, one of them accompanied by Portuguese wine degustation, opened new sources of research and fomented new collaborations among the participants. The largest number of presentations was devoted to the sessions on X-ray sources and detectors and on art and cultural heritage. Special reference must be made to the Fundamental Parameter Initiative—survey and discussion, which took place in a special session during the conference. The annual EXSA General Assembly also took place during the conference with the presence of Peter Wobrauschek as president and all the present members. At the end, a pleasant reception was offered to all the participants. According to the tradition, there was an excursion. Two options were given to the participants. One of them was a trip to Fátima, one of the most important Catholic places and the Batalha Monastery, a Manuelin style master piece from the 15th century. The alternative was a visit to Coimbra University, the oldest in Portugal and one of the oldest in Europe. The conference dinner was one of the highlights of the conference. It was held in the Grand Casino of Figueira da Foz, and the astonishing show surprised and delighted all participants. The International Advisory Committee announced that the next EXRS conference will take place in Vienna in 2012, as a collaboration between the Atominstitut, Vienna University of Technology and the International Atomic Energy Agency. We are sure that it will be a great success. Thanks are due to all Organizing Committee Members for their choice of the invited speakers, their advice on the overall guidelines and continued support during the entire preparation of the conference. Special thanks should go to Cristina Monteiro, a member of the Local Organizing Committee who took most of the initiatives by herself and carried out on her shoulders heavy responsibilities of the organization. Our gratitude goes also to Wiley for hosting the Conference papers in this journal. Finally, we want to express our gratitude to everyone who contributed in some way to the success of this conference, and to Mother Nature who cooperated magnificently.

Creating an Antidote to Student Apathy: "The News of the Week"

This September, at a conference dinner following two days of interdisciplinary presentations, an environmental scientist seated next to me bemoaned the fact that she could not “get them to talk.” Nobody questioned that the “them” was students, and a sociologist at the table chimed in that her students were also apparently disinclined toward interaction. As nearly everyone at the table taught at a regional comprehensive university, this invited an opportunity to discuss an in class pedagogical methodology that I have developed and found to be extremely successful in stimulating student participation: “The News of the Week.”

Health Technology Assessment International 7th Annual Meeting

A record number of delegates from industry, academia and health policy convened at the 7th Annual Meeting of Health Technology Assessment International (HTAi) which was held in Dublin, Ireland in June 2010. The theme of this year’s meeting was ‘Maximizing the Value of HTA’. The scientific program covered a broad range of topics from coverage with evidence development to timeliness of conducting HTAs, early engagement with stakeholders, value of information analysis, patient involvement and international collaboration. There was also a lively social program with the conference dinner held at the Guinness Storehouse.

A time to deliver

The British Dam Society had the great pleasure of the company of the ICE president, Paul Jowitt, at the 16th biennial conference during the evening of the 24 June 2010. He gave the conference dinner speech – a call to action for dams engineers, which is reproduced below.

Preface

The 29th Annual Conference of the International Society for Clinical Biostatistics took place in Copenhagen, August 17–21, 2008. It was the second time ISCB visited Denmark, the first was in 1992. The venue was the School of Architecture, across the water from Downtown Copenhagen, so the potential means of transportation included not only the ordinary bus, but also the waterbus. The social program included a reception at the town hall and a conference dinner in the famous Tivoli gardens, where the dinner was accompanied by entertainment with fighting Vikings. The number of participants was 570, which was record high. The local organizing committee, headed by Bjarne Bodin, must be congratulated for this great success. Scientifically, the meeting started with four courses on, respectively, adaptive designs, models for discrete longitudinal data, Bayesian methods for biostatistical applications and non-inferiority trials. There were six invited sessions, on, respectively, plenary state-of-the-art lectures, causal models and evidence from non-randomized studies, recent developments in genetics, biomarkers—qualification and application, analysis of adaptive trials: tests, estimates and confidence intervals, as well as a non-scientific session on working places in biostatistics. A highlight of the conference was the key note lecture by Niels Keiding on sampling patterns in event history analysis, with applications to epidemiology, a talk, which was by special invitation of the ISCB president, Emmanuel Lesaffre. Furthermore, there were 27 contributed paper sessions and 2 poster sessions. This brings the total number of presentations up to around 300. The conference logo was a bridge, referring not only to the nearby physical bridge to Sweden (the conference was jointly organized by Denmark and Sweden), but also to symbolize that a scientific conference acts like a communication bridge, connecting biostatisticians from around the world. I also think the conference was highly successful in this regard. For this special issue, there were 47 submissions, of which 23 are accepted and published here. Two more papers have not yet completed the evaluation process and may appear in a later issue. The amount of work involved in writing and publishing these papers can be illustrated by the following numbers. There were 145 author entries (this number is not corrected for multiple entries) who have submitted 97 different versions of their papers, and they have been evaluated by 86 reviewers (in this case, there are no multiple entries) and myself. The reviewers made a total of 114 review reports. In this issue, the papers are presented according to topic. There are four papers on design of studies. There are 3 papers on the analysis of logistic models, 3 on continuous variables and 11 on survival data. Finally, there are two papers on meta-analysis. I am very satisfied with the quality of these papers, so please read and enjoy them. I would like to thank the authors for their contributions, the referees for their help in assessing the papers, the journal editors for giving us space in this journal, the editorial staff for assistance, and the scientific program committee members for their help in creating a stimulating program.

The WPA Regional Meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, 22-24 October 2009.

The WPA Regional Meeting held in Abuja, Nigeria on 22–24 October 2009 attracted 309 delegates from 19 countries. Held in collaboration with the African Association of Psychiatrists and Allied Professionals (AAPAP) and the World Health Organization (WHO), and hosted by the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria (APN), the theme of the meeting, “Scaling up and reaching down — addressing unmet need for service”, was chosen to reflect a major focus of current attention among stakeholders in global mental health, including both the WHO and the WPA. The meeting was declared open by the Nigerian President, who was represented by the Minister of Health, Prof. B. Osotimehin. In his opening address, the President informed the audience that a revised mental health policy and draft mental health legislation for Nigeria were going through a process of stakeholder consultations and was hopeful that these documents would soon begin to receive official attention. The WPA President, Prof. M. Maj, highlighted the items in the WPA triennium plan with salience for the region. These included the focus on policy engagement to extend mental health service, development of educational programmes for young psychiatrists, and attention to populations with special needs, including those with recent experience of disaster. Dr. S. Saxena, from the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse of the WHO, assured the audience of the importance attached to service scale-up in the region, as attested to by the identification of several countries in need of focused support in the Organization's mhGAP document. O. Gureje, the meeting convener, set the meeting in the context of several decades of growth of academic psychiatry in Nigeria. He reminded participants that the first formal meeting of psychiatrists from across the world to be held in sub-Saharan Africa was convened in Nigeria by the late Prof. A. Lambo in November 1961. Dr. F. Njenga, the outgoing President of AAPAP, traced the history of the development of the Association and noted that, in a relatively short period of its existence, it has established credibility as a professional organization. The meeting had a full complement of scientific programmes, including plenary lectures, key lectures, symposia, and free papers reporting new research. Specific attention was given to several components of the WPA Action Plan 2008–2011 (1–2). These included a symposium on successful experiences in our field — with examples of mental health reform (Uganda), cultural therapy (Jamaica), and a mental health/HIV initiative (in several African countries) – and a forum discussion focusing on the roles of professional societies in health care reforms. The symposium in which updates of the revision process of the ICD and DSM were provided by Drs. D. Regier and S. Saxena was of particular interest to many participants. Two special workshops were held during the meeting: one on communicating with children and adults with intellectual disabilities (by Prof. S. Hollins) and the other on the United Nations Interagency Standing Committee Guidelines on responding to conflicts and disasters (by Dr. J. Nakku and colleagues). Two pre- and post-meeting events are worthy of note. A study group, sponsored by the International Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists and Allied Professionals, was conducted for three days prior to the commencement of the meeting. Directed by Prof. B. Robertson, it had Prof. M. Belfer as a member of the faculty. Another workshop for young psychiatrists on professional and leadership skills, directed by Prof. N. Sartorius, was organized to follow the main meeting. Other members of the faculty were Profs. G. Thornicroft, S. Seedat, and O. Gureje. A presentation was made by Prof. N. Sartorius in honor of Prof. A. Lambo, the first Nigerian psychiatrist who later became the Deputy Director-General of the WHO, at the conference dinner. It traced the development and execution of the International Pilot Study of Schizophrenia, a pioneering multi-country collaborative project of the WHO in which both Profs. Sartorius and Lambo as well as another participant at the meeting, Prof. M. Olatawura, were involved. Backed with black-and-white photos taken during the project's execution, the presentation provided young members of the audience with a historical excursion to the distant past of psychiatric epidemiology. A formal change of leadership of the AAPAP was also witnessed at the dinner when Dr. F. Njenga, the outgoing President, handed over the ceremonial chain of office to Prof. O. Gureje as the new President.

Soft Magnetic Materials 19 Conference Co-Chairs' Foreword

HE 19th “Soft Magnetic Materials” Conference (SMM 19) was held from September 6–9, 2009 in Torino, Italy. The conference was organized by INRIM, the Italian Institute for Research in Metrology, in collaboration with Politecnico di Torino and Universita degli Studi di Torino. The Soft Magnetic Materials Conference, first established in 1973, provides a forum for discussion on properties and applications of soft magnets through a broad range of topics. It is the ideal environment for the presentation of the latest developments in the properties and applications of soft magnetic materials. Torino, the first capital of the unified Italian kingdom, is an important cultural and technological center, renowned for its baroque architecture, universities and research institutions, museums, winter sport facilities, superb wines, and cuisine. The Conference was held in the Torino Incontra Convention Center, centrally located in Torino and surrounded by the major historical and cultural attractions of the city. The conference dinner was held in the historical building of the University Rectorate, close to where notable men of science such as Erasmus of Rotterdam, Friederich Nietzsche, J. L. Lagrange, Amedeo Avogadro, Giuseppe Peano, and Galileo Ferraris, among others, spent part of their life, advancing human knowledge into new unexplored realms of science and philosophy. Despite the widespread global economic downturn, the Conference was quite successful. We received more than 490 abstracts, with 360 accepted for presentation at the Conference. The Conference attracted more than 350 registered delegates from 33 countries, of which nearly 90 delegates were students. This makes SMM 19 the largest SMM conference ever. The large participation and in particular the remarkably high number of students confirm that the area of soft magnetic materials remains vital, with much potential for the future. There were twelve invited talks delivered from participants from university and industry; twenty shorter oral contributions and about 330 posters were presented. This issue of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON MAGNETICS contains the conference-related papers that were accepted for publication after careful review carried out according to the usual IEEE standards. On Tuesday, September 8, a special oral session was held that featured the Magnetics Society Distinguished Lecture on spintronics by Hideo Ohno of Tohoku University, Japan, as well as a lecture about philosophical and historical aspects of magnetism presented by Vittorio Marchis, Politecnico di Torino. Both lectures were extremely interesting and very well received. This was a good service to the Magnetics Society, as more than 300 scientists from all over the world could discover and appreciate the value of the Distinguished Lecturer program. During the closing session on Wednesday, September 9, Ryusuke Hasegawa of Metglas presented a most stimulating general overview of the SMM 19 technical program. After the announcement of the three best student presentation awards, it was announced that the next Soft Magnetic Materials conference, SMM 20, will be organized in Athens, Greece, in 2011. Our best wishes to the organizers of SMM 20 for a most successful conference. The success of SMM 19 has been the result of the joint effort and dedication of all the researchers and students of the magnetics research group in Torino, and of the INRIM logistic and administrative support staff. Without their invaluable assistance it would not be possible to host a successful SMM 19 Conference. Our most sincere thanks to all of them.

Conference report: Urban Transformation: Controversies, Contrasts and Challenges The IPHS Fourteenth Biennial Conference, Istanbul, 2010

Planning history is sometimes looked down on as a minority interest, tangential to the dynamism and focus of the major issues facing contemporary society and those responsible for its planning. However, the message emerging from the International Planning History Society (IPHS) Fourteenth Biennial Conference held in Istanbul from 12-15 July 2010 is clear: planning history is alive and kicking, vibrant and relevant. For there were no less than ten 'invited papers' and about 325 other submitted papers listed in the conference programme (and these represented a quality control that winnowed down from the 510 abstracts proposed). Not only was IPHS 2010 a large conference, but its theme - 'Urban transformation: controversies, contrasts and challenges' - was both wide-ranging and a challenge to the contributors. Conference participants and Istanbul The different origins of participants in the conference were interesting and reflected the relevance of the subject. No less than 42 countries were represented, although only nine generated participant numbers in double figures. Unsurprisingly, the host country produced the most (115 participants), a reflection not only of the nature and scope of relevant research in Turkey, but of that country's significant efforts in recent years to develop a high-performing, research-driven university sector. There were 51 participants from Brazil, apparently a response to changing funding arrangements; yet the academic profile of Brazil, too, is fast developing and the 2012 IPHS Conference will be held in Sao Paulo. China (3 participants) and India (2) represent places with fascinating planning histories, but whose academics have thus far had less engagement with IPHS and its conferences. Africa as a whole is even more difficult of access. The venue may also have attracted many participants. Accepting Istanbul's bid in its year as European Capital of Culture was a carefully considered decision by the IPHS, and the organisers and sponsors delivered a memorable experience. There was a welcoming evening cruise on the Bosphorus, the conference dinner at a major museum, a special evening opening of a major exhibition of artefacts from across the world relating to Istanbul's 8,000-year heritage held at the Sak?p Sabanc? Museum and tours of the remarkable city centre among other destinations. Lunch in the neighbouring Hyatt Hotel was also quite an experience. The conference programme, papers and sessions The quality of many conference papers was high, although in an event of this size it would be invidious to single out individuals. Nevertheless, it was good to see the number of papers singly or jointly authored by new researchers, among which the IPHS awarded the prize for best paper to Frederick Omolo-Okalebo (KTH, Stockholm) for a paper on Kampala that explored not only an unfamiliar topic, but an underresearched part of the world (at least in planning history terms). Also memorable was the plenary paper by Baykan Gunay (Middle East Technical University) on 'Ankara: duality of the core and the fringe' that was informative and entertaining, bringing the personality and history of the researcher to the fore (many of those attending the presentation conduct research about places and issues closely linked to their own backgrounds, and so it was well received). I spent most time in the 'heritage sites' theme sessions, where Muge Akkar Ercan (Middle East Technical University) gave a salutary reminder that we should consider the sustainability dimension of conservation, which is sometimes problematic in historic housing districts. The conference programme delivered some familiar themes, which included 'planning culture', 'heritage sites', 'planning models', 'public space and landscape', 'emerging concepts under urban transformation', 'public space and landscape', 'the economy and urban development', 'industrial and commercial districts', 'urban form and architecture', 'urban space', 'urban management, strategies policies and tools' and 'social justice'. …

On April 24, 2009, Berkeley Law held a daylong conference and gala dinner on behalf of the late Professor Philip P. Frickey. The conference produced an extraordinary set of essays, which appear in this symposium issue of the California Law Review. Although the purpose of the symposium issue is to illuminate Professor Frickey's scholarship, a few introductory words about his career seem in order. Professor Frickey graduated from the University of Kansas in 19752 and from the University of Michigan Law School in 1978, where he was editor-in-chief of the Michigan Law Review. After graduation, Professor Frickey clerked for Judge John Minor Wisdom of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and for Justice Thurgood Marshall of the U.S. Supreme Court. He then practiced law for a couple years in Washington, D.C., before joining the faculty of the University of Minnesota Law School, where he taught for seventeen years. He joined the Berkeley Law faculty in 2000. He was appointed to the Alexander F. and May T. Morrison Chair in 2007, and held that chair until his

JONSMOD 2008—guest editorial

The papers in this special issue of Ocean Dynamics were all presented at JONSMOD 2008 in the University of Bergen, 23–25 June 2008. JONSMOD is the Joint Numerical Sea Modelling Group. This was the 14th meeting of the biennial series that started in 1982. A history was included in the 2006 meeting, the 25th anniversary, and appeared in this journal (57, pp 239–244). Features of this particular meeting included many papers on internal waves, reflecting the renewed interest in these waves as carriers of processes and information over the ocean and their importance to larger-scale processes. Nonhydrostatic models are an interesting development that is receiving more and more attention as the horizontal resolution of the numerical models gets smaller. Models that incorporate biology continue to feature, but not to any great extent. Since they first appeared in 1992 they have remained stubbornly at the margins. The quality of the presentations was particularly high this year and is reflected in the record number of papers in this JONSMOD volume. Thanks go to all the presenters for this, and thanks to the chairmen of sessions, always a thankless task. The local organization was led by Jarle Berntsen, ably assisted by Bjorn Adlandsvik and a bevy of charming postgraduate students. Special thanks to Jarle for his hard work. The conference was based at the University of Bergen, Department of Applied Mathematics where Jarle works, but the icebreaker was hosted by Bjorn at the Institute of Marine Research laboratories across the city overlooking the fjord. The conference dinner was at a delightful venue high up at the end of the funicular at Floien with panoramic views over Bergen. All the papers in this volume have passed through the rigorous reviewing process consistent with papers published in the international peer-reviewed literature. Thanks go to the tireless work of the anonymous reviewers. I am conscious of the work done by these people for no reward when the time to undertake such tasks gets more and more difficult to find. I do worry that this peer review process is getting more and more difficult to maintain over the years. Thanks also to Jorg Wolff for allowing, for the third time, a volume of his journal to be placed at my disposal to house papers from JONSMOD. The next meeting takes place in 2010 and is in Delft in the capable hands of Herman Gerritsen of Deltares (ex Delft Hydraulics). 4th German Conference on Chemoinformatics: 22. CIC-Workshop. November 9–11, 2008, Goslar, Germany

From the 9th to the 11th November 2008, the Chemistry-Information-Computers (CIC) division of the German Chemical Society (GDCh) has invited the chemoinformatics and modeling community to Goslar, Germany to participate in the 4th German Conference on (GCC). Almost 200 participants from 14 countries accepted the invitation making the event again one of the largest chemoinformatics conferences in Europe. The international symposium addressed a broad range of modern research topics in the field of computers and chemistry. The focus was on recent developments and trends in the fields of and Drug Development, Chemical Information, Molecular Modeling, Computational Material Science and Nanotechnology. In addition, other contributions from the field of Computational Chemistry were welcome. The scientific program included one evening lecture [K. Varmuza(Austria)], six plenary lectures [J. Bajorath (Germany), M.R. Berthold (Germany), R. Herges (Germany), S.M. Bachrach (USA), R. C. Glen (UK), M. Elstner (Germany)], 16 general lectures as well as 77 poster presentations. Traditionally, the conference started with a Free-Software-Session and the Chemoinformatics Market Place on Sunday afternoon right before the official conference opening at 5 pm. Numerous Open Source projects from the field of have been presented within the Free-Software-Session in the large lecture hall at the conference hotel 'Der Achtermann in Goslar. In addition two software tutorials have been provided in parallel within the scope of the Chemoinformatics Market Place: One software tutorial was provided by Xemistry GmbH covering some key technologies of their CACTVS application. In the second tutorial Chemical Computing Group offered insights into the new release of MOE. After the official opening at 5 pm and a short introduction of the 10 exhibitors the first day ended with a conference dinner and the evening lecture of Kurt Varmuza on Classification and Characterization of Materials – from Archaeometry to Comets. Besides the scientific program a special highlight of the conference was the FIZ-CHEMIE-Berlin 2008 awards on Monday afternoon. The CIC division awards this price each year to the best diploma thesis and the best PhD in the field of Computational Chemistry. The PhD price was awarded to Dr. Oliver Korb from the group of Prof. Dr. Thomas Exner, Konstanz for his dissertation Efficient Ant Colony Optimization Algorithms for Structure- and Ligand-based Drug Design. The award for the best diploma thesis has gone to Andreas Jahn from the group of Prof. Dr. Andreas Zell, Tubingen with the title Die Erweiterung des Optimal Assignment Kernel (OAK) um konformationelle Flexibilitat. Finally, after 4 years the old GDCh-CIC division board handed over the divisions concerns to the new elected board members during the conference. The success of the German Conference on is definitely a credit to the old CIC board and we want to thank the retired board members Christoph Steinbeck, Gregor Fels and Rainer Herges for their work and engagement. Conference report: Planning, Law and Property Rights The Third Annual Conference of the International Association of Planning, Law and Property Rights (PLPR), Aalborg, 2009

Notwithstanding what the Association's president called the 'Aalborg in February' factor (short daylight in a grey and cold North Jutland port city surrounded by pig farms), some 80 delegates, a similar number to the previous two PLPR conferences (Amsterdam in 2007 and Warsaw in 2008), attended the Association's 2009 conference at the University of Aalborg, Denmark from 11 to 13 February. The hospitality made up for the weather and time of year: a tour of regeneration sites, a welcome reception in the eighteenth-century town hall, and a conference dinner in another heritage building, the Jens Bang house. The University of Aalborg was an appropriate host, having a reputation for its educational philosophy of inter-disciplinary and problem-orientated studies organised around group and project work, preferring real-world problem-solving over more traditional examination-focused academic study. It also has a strong planning and surveying expertise, expanding into environmental areas such as sustainable energy management, and a strong international focus (some 800 international students among its student population of 12,000). The PLPR Association1 has emerged from the planning law group of the much larger conferences of AESOP (Association of European Schools of Planning) and ACSP (American Collegiate Schools of Planning), which passed the thousand delegate mark at their joint conference in Chicago in 2008 (Davoudi and Winkle, 2008). Planning law tracks have been an established feature of AESOP/ASCP conferences, and the push towards a free-standing academic association reflects the need for a large enough peer group with whom to discuss research in the area, and for a cross-national comparative perspective. Much is owed to the energy and commitment of its first president, Professor Rachelle Alterman of the Haifa Technion (Israel). The Association put its draft statutes to the Aalborg conference (and now has its own logo!), while a related International Platform of Experts in Planning Law is coming into existence.2 Some 60 high-standard papers were presented in Aalborg,3 with a more-or-less equal balance of planners and lawyers (some qualified in both), and the predominantly academic focus moderated by professional practitioners. The conference was organised without the formality of an over-arching conference theme or keynote papers. Papers were organised into two parallel streams within topic areas: 'public-private co-operation', 'comparative studies', 'planning and property rights', 'property development issues', 'land readjustment', 'public participation', 'expropriation' and 'coastal protection'. Unfortunately, time constraints limited many presentations to only 10-15 minutes; the only practical solution to this problem in future appears to be additional parallel streams. Other invited topic areas in 'enforcement' and 'real estate' attracted insufficient papers to be programmed (real estate having its own European Real Estate Society4). The 2009 PLRP conference papers reflected the trend towards globalisation and comparative planning and land law and the increasing inter-disciplinary cooperation between planners and lawyers. …
