Product Development of Futsal Shoes Using the QFD Method (Survey of Futsal Shoe Consumers in The Tangerang District Area)

Futsal shoe products are one of the products needed to support when playing futsal because they are useful for protecting all parts of the foot when playing futsal from hitting the ball or opposing players. This study aims to identify technical characteristics according to customer needs and desires and design product design concepts for futsal shoes. This research uses the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) method, as a result, to identify technical characteristics and customer needs and design product design concepts using tools in the form of Rhinoceros applications. The data collection technique is in the form of distributing questionnaires to 100 respondents with the target respondents being male or female, members of the futsal community, employment status (students, students, and workers), domiciled in the Tangerang Regency area. The results of identifying technical characteristics are futsal shoes with PU synthetic upper material, phylon midsole material, rubber outsole material, Ethyl Vinyl Acetate (EVA) insole material, vamp width dimensions of 9.6 cm, and features without shoelaces. Automatic Annotation of Functional Semantics for 3D Product Model Based on Latent Functional Semantics

To support effectively function-driven 3D model retrieval in the phase of mechanical product conceptual design and improve the efficiency of functional semantics annotation for 3D models, an approach for functional semantics automatic annotation for mechanical 3D product model based on latent functional semantics is presented. First, the design knowledge and function knowledge of mechanical product model are analyzed, and the ontology-based functional semantics for assembly product is constructed. Then, some concept about functional region is defined, and the 3D product model is decomposed into functional regions with different levels of granularity. The similarity of the functional region is evaluated considering multisource attribute information and geometric shape. Subsequently, the similarity based on latent functional semantics annotation model for functional regions is established, which is employed for annotating automatic latent functional semantics in the 3D product model structure. Finally, mechanical 3D models in the model library are used to verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed approach.

A neuroergonomic approach to assessing motor performance in stroke patients using fNIRS and behavioral data

Stroke is characterized by high morbidity and disability, and proposing effective methods for assessing and designing rehabilitation products is an attractive topic in current research. In this study, a hand function rehabilitation aid was developed for stroke patients. Ten stroke patients and 20 healthy older people as a control group were recruited to perform a 600 s task after a 600 s resting by gripping a stick while clicking on a flashing light in an electronic insert in sequence according to a pattern. The functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and behavioral data were collected during their rehabilitation training. Brain function was analyzed using three indicators, namely brain area activation, functional connectivity and effective connectivity, while behavioral performance was analyzed using ten indicators, such as velocity and acceleration, and correlations were made between both. Followed by proposing a quantitative assessment method based on the fusion of multiple data sources. The results showed that the developed rehabilitation tool could effectively stimulate the patient's brain and help recover their cognitive and behavioral capacities. The scientific validity of the proposed assessment approach was further confirmed by contrasting the data results of the stroke group with those of the healthy elderly group. This study has integrated brain function and behavioral data, providing a practical quantitative evaluation method of product ergonomics and data-driven product design concepts for stroke patients.

High-quality concept design is a key factor of successful product performance and efficiency. Conventional conceptual design morphological chart serves to combine product concept designs. In addition, these capabilities make designers able to specify more QAs to meet different product stakeholders’ requirements. Beside these advantages, the opportunities for further development and limitations are considered in discussion and conclusion.

Towards the conceptual design of ML-enhanced products: the UX value framework and the CoMLUX design process

Abstract With the increasing utilization of machine learning (ML) to enhance products’ capabilities, the design research community has begun to explore how to support the conceptual design of ML-enhanced products. However, UX value creation of ML-enhanced products is still challenging because of ML's unique characteristics and numerous complex factors in conceptual design. To help designers create UX value for ML-enhanced products, we developed the UX value framework and the CoMLUX design process. The proposed framework describes how ML, stakeholders, and context co-create the UX value of ML-enhanced products, and identifies the growability and opacity of ML, helping designers systematically understand the co-creators while avoiding cognitive overload. The CoMLUX design process provides practical guidance for designing ML-enhanced products with growability and transparency. At last, we demonstrate the usage methods of the framework and process in an actual project and summarize the inspirations and limitations of our work.

Exploring the intersection of biology and design for product innovations

Design, development, productization, and applications of advanced product concepts are pressing for higher multifunctionality, resilience, and maximization of available resources equitably to meet the growing and continuing demands of global customers. These demands have further accelerated during the recent COVID-19 pandemic and are continuing to be a challenge. Engineering designs are one of the most effective ways to endow products with functions, resilience, and sustainability. Biology, through millions of years of evolution, has met these acute requirements under severe resource and environmental constraints. As the manufacturing of products is reaching the fundamental limits of raw materials, labor, and resource constraints in terms of availability, accessibility, and affordability, new approaches are a call to action to meet these challenges. Understanding the designs in biology is an attractive, novel, and desired frontier for learning and implementation to meet this call to action. This is the focus of the paper discussed through examples for convergence of fundamental engineering design concepts and the lessons learned and applied from biology.

A contradiction solving method for complex product conceptual design based on deep learning and technological evolution patterns

Contradictions caused by the various design constraints present increasing challenges to efficiency and innovation in product development. TRIZ provides Inventive Principles (IPs) and Contradiction Matrix that are the most frequently applied in conflict resolution. However, the high-level abstraction and subjective selection of IPs inhibit achieving the transformation process from paradoxical states to physical structures. To fill this gap, a contradiction solving method by integrating deep learning and technological evolution patterns for product conceptual design is proposed, which illustrates the mechanism of contradiction transition from the perspective of system evolution and supplies a systematic and model-based design approach. Firstly, generic engineering parameters are extracted to define the underlying contradictions transformed from critical defects which are found out through function modeling and root-conflict analysis. Then, a fully-connected deep neural network with excellent performance is developed to uncover the non-linear relationships between engineering parameters and evolution patterns. Finally, an evolution tree based on the predicted patterns is constructed to visualize transformation potentials of a technical system and help designers generate innovative specific solutions. In addition, a case study concerning design conflict resolution for beat-up system of three-dimensional tubular weaving machine is used to validate the adaptability and reliability of the proposed approach.

Evaluation of product conceptual design based on Pythagorean fuzzy set under big data environment

The concept design evaluation phase of the new product launch is extremely important. However, current evaluation information relies mainly on the a priori knowledge of decision makers and is subjective and ambiguous. For this reason, a conceptual design solution decision model based on Pythagorean fuzzy sets in a big data environment is proposed. Firstly, we use the ability of big data to mine and analyze information to construct a new standard for product concept design evaluation in the big data environment. Secondly, the Pythagorean fuzzy set (PFS), Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) are integrated into a decision model. AHP, extended by the Pythagorean fuzzy set, is used to determine the weights of new conceptual design criteria in a big data environment. The Pythagorean fuzzy TOPSIS is used to prioritize alternative conceptual design solutions. The feasibility of the approach is proven with a practical case, the generalizability of the method is confirmed with two descriptive digital cases, and the reliability, validity, and superiority of the process are demonstrated with sensitivity analysis, comparative analysis, and computational complexity analysis.

Integrating generative design and topology optimisation with product design values

Advances in computer technology and software increasingly encourage the usage of CAD tools for designing forms that algorithmically manipulate ‘structural’ and ‘surface’ features. These sophisticated new computational processes, broadly known as ‘generative design’ and ‘topology optimisation’, are very likely to become a regular part of the product design process for many types of products. A core value of design practice is the development of intuition and iterative skills to explore the technical and experiential performance of design concepts through sketching, model making, and prototyping. Identifying ways to integrate ‘generative design’ and ‘topology optimisation’ CAD processes with ‘making’ as a core value in product design concept development is a significant challenge - particularly for design education. A related concern is that ‘topology optimisation’ can generate structurally optimised parts for the amount and type of material used, which essentially determines the fabrication method. Often these parts in their raw form can only be made using 3D printing technologies, though they can (and often need to) be ‘styled’ or modified. Therefore, the relationship to 3D printing and its limitations as an end-part manufacturing technology must be critically tested as part of the design process. The practice-led research presented includes a case study of the design of a mountain bike (MTB) crank arm developed using an integrated design process that incorporates a series of ‘topology optimisation’ simulations. The authors undertook the project to inform the design of a new ‘generative design’ and ‘topology optimisation’ studio-based subject to be offered to second and third-year product design students at the University of Technology Sydney. The research proposes a form of integrated design practice that values ‘making’ iteratively, and the advancing CAD-based ‘generative design’ and ‘topology optimisation’ tools to responsibly support experiential learning in product design, manufacturing and engineering.

A twin data-driven approach for user-experience based design innovation

Data-driven innovation has received increasing attention, which explores big data technologies to gain more insights and advantages for product design. In user experience (UX) based design innovation, user-generated data and archived design documents are two valuable resources for various design activities such as identifying opportunities and generating design ideas. However, these two resources are usually isolated in different systems. Additionally, design information typically represented based on functional aspects is limited for UX-oriented design. To facilitate experience-oriented design activities, we propose a twin data-driven approach to integrate UX data and archived design documents. In particular, we aim to extract UX concepts from product reviews and design concepts from patents respectively and to discover associations between the extracted concepts. First, a UX-integrated design information representation model is proposed to associate capabilities with key elements of UX at the concept, category, and aspect levels of information. Based on this model, a twin data-driven approach is developed to bridge experience information and design information. It contains three steps: experience aspect identification using an attention-based LSTM (Long short-term memory) network, design information categorization based on topic clustering using BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) and LAD (Latent Dirichlet allocation) model, and experience needs and design information integration by leveraging word embedding techniques to measure concept similarity. A case study using healthcare-related experience and design information has demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of this approach.

Integration of Function Analysis and Trimming Method: A Systematic Approach for Improving a Spinal Board Design

Function analysis primarily distinguishes components in a system and explains the function interactions amongst the components' pairs. It assists designers in revealing the main problematic areas (components) and contradictions. The trimming method assists in generating a simple design; thus, it can reduce costs and the number of faults. This study integrated the function analysis and trimming method as a systematic approach to product concept design based on the problem-oriented concept. A spinal board is an evacuation device for patients with an injured spinal cord. A case study of improving a spinal board design is conducted to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach. The study resulted in an alternate design of spinal board with some inventions which deliver improved performance in decreasing injury, increasing comfort and safety, and satisfying the users' requirements.

A Conceptual Design Specification Based on User Aesthetic Information Analysis and Product Functional Reasoning

User satisfaction with a product plays a direct role in the purchasing decisions. With the enrichment of material life and the growth of individual requirements, this satisfaction is derived from the requirement for functionality to aesthetics. Conventional product design methods normally focus on achieving the required functions where its design specifications are mainly related to certain functional or usability requirements. In recent years, researchers have made efforts to develop methods for supporting aesthetic design activities during the product conceptual design phase. However, most of these methods hardly consider product aesthetics or the consumers’ emotional needs. Therefore, this study proposed a user-driven conceptual design specification integrating functional reasoning with aesthetic information analysis. The method consisted of two tasks, the construction of a mapping model and the implementation of the mapping model. Firstly, the mapping model was constructed for capturing the relationships between initial design specifications and user experience (UX). Secondly, the proposed design specifications were selected, refined, and optimized based on the mapping model. A case study on digital camera design was carried out to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method. The results showed that, compared with the initial design specification candidates, the UX was enhanced by applying the improved design specifications.

A novel integrated MADM method for design concept evaluation

Design concept evaluation plays a significant role in new product development. Rough set based methods are regarded as effective evaluation techniques when facing a vague and uncertain environment and are widely used in product research and development. This paper proposed an improved rough-TOPSIS method, which aims to reduce the imprecision of design concept evaluation in two ways. First, the expert group for design concept evaluation is classified into three clusters: designers, manufacturers, and customers. The cluster weight is determined by roles in the assessment using a Multiplicative Analytic Hierarchy Process method. Second, the raw information collection method is improved with a 3-step process, and both design values and expert linguistic preferences are integrated into the rough decision matrix. The alternatives are then ranked with a rough-TOPSIS method with entropy criteria weight. A practical example is shown to demonstrate the method’s viability. The findings suggest that the proposed decision-making process is effective in product concept design evaluation.

A cerebellar operant conditioning-inspired constraint satisfaction approach for product design concept generation

Conceptual design is a pivotal stage of new product development. The function-behaviour-structure framework is adopted in this stage to help designers search design space and generate conceptual solutions iteratively. Computer-aided methods developed within this framework will yield significant insight into facilitating the cognitive activities of designers. In order to solve the mapping process from behaviours to structures which is a typical constraint satisfaction problem, a cerebellar operant conditioning-inspired constraint satisfaction approach is proposed in this paper. The design constraints-driven operant conditioning and its regulation mechanism by the cerebellum are analysed for the first time. Proposition logic is applied to transfer the constraint satisfaction problem into a propositional satisfiability problem while an undirected graph is utilised to model design space. Inspired by the modularised cerebellar structure, a modularised constraint satisfaction neural network is constructed to determine the satisfiability of design problems. Conceptual solutions can be generated by clustering the embedding of nodes in this network. The proposed approach imitates the design constraint-driven operant conditioning to narrow down design space without assigning specific values to design components. It reduces design iterations and avoids combinatorial explosions during conceptual design.

Design and Development of Smart Wearable Products for Basketball Dribble Teaching Training Posture Monitoring

Basketball is one of the most popular sports, but apart from a small number of sports specialties, ordinary people rarely have the opportunity to receive professional basketball training, let alone coaches who provide one-on-one dribbling posture guidance. Dribbling is a very basic and important technique in basketball. Mastering the correct dribbling posture can help people further improve their basketball skills. In response to this problem, this article designed a smart wearable product to monitor the user’s posture in basketball dribbling training. If the user has a wrong dribble posture, the product will automatically prompt and give relevant suggestions. This article focuses on user demand research, product conceptual design, prototype development, and dribbling posture determination experiments and elaborates the design and development process of the product. Based on the experimental data, this article believes that the optimal parameters of the monitoring standard for the “head down too long” during basketball dribbling are the x -axis angle value of the motion sensor is critical for -120°, and the duration of exceeding the critical value is 1 second. The optimal parameters of the “dribbling wrist flip” monitoring standard are the x -axis angle value of the motion sensor has a critical value of 105°, and the duration of exceeding the critical value is 0.4 seconds. Judging from the end user’s experience and rating of the product’s trial experience, it can be seen that the smart product can indeed play a very good auxiliary effect in the field of dribbling posture monitoring. Popularizing it in the daily training of basketball players can effectively promote the full informatization and intelligent development of sports.
