The Quiet Quote: Thoughts on Quotation Norms and Plagiarism in the Judeo-Arabic Culture of the High and Late Middle Ages

Abstract In this paper, I strive to emphasize the phenomenology of quotation norms among Medieval Jewish scholars in an Islamicate context. The examined texts shed new light on the theme of plagiarism. The article ponders a fascinating connection raised in Jewish tradition between the legal normativity of quotation and the eschatological doctrine of deliverance. This research is both philological and comparative and stands at the intersection between law, literature, and philosophy. The last parts of the article show that the concept of plagiarism is a later phenomenon and that the discourse in this regard is modern by all means. It is connected with concepts such as intellectual property, which is mostly grounded in human rights discourse. In the appendix, I show the reductio ad absurdum of this phenomenon in modern times and address the heightened complexity of the issue in the technological era, with the promotion and growing influence of artificial intelligence.

A competência em informação no enfrentamento ao plágio no ambiente acadêmico

This article discusses information literacy in the face of plagiarism in academia. It reflects on the causes of plagiarism, such as the little incentive for students to produce authorial content and the absence of institutional policies that guide such productions. As a response to this context, the article suggests an education for authorship based on information literacy. Information literacy, among others, promotes a healthy relationship between people and the information universe. Thus, the objective is to discuss how promoting information literacy contributes to combating academic plagiarism and establishing authorship. The method involves bibliographical research in databases in the area of Information Science and argumentative construction in which the concepts of plagiarism and information literacy are related. The results include a demonstrative guide on how information literacy can be used in the production of academic work and guidelines for teachers to recognize and avoid plagiarism. The work concludes that the skills generated within the relationship between individuals and information can benefit the construction of authorship and be an effective element in combating plagiarism.

Contemplating and Visualizing Plagiarism Through a Bibliometric Study


 Plagiarism has become a buzz word in higher education sector graving as unlawful act in academic publishing. A lot of literature covering the various aspects of plagiarism and related issues has been published in the form of scientific communications. The article contemplates and visualizes the literature on plagiarism with the help of selective bibliometric parameters. The present study is focused upon concept of plagiarism with an intend to enrich the quality of research and bringing in more awareness on the topic by presenting detailed analysis on the quantum of research work from 1989-2022. During the study period, 3771 validated documents were found on the theme of plagiarism. An average citation per document is registered as 14.3. Wiwanikit, V; Rolg, M; Joob, B, and Marusic A had the highest publications on plagiarism literature. The analysis in the given study stated that USA, United Kingdom, China, Australia, and Canada have been most contributing countries in terms of the research output. Using Bradford’s law, the top ten sources along with SJR value13from the core zone has been evaluated. The conceptual structure on theme of plagiarism is revealed through co-occurrence of keyword and thematic map. ‘Plagiarism’, academic dishonesty’ and ‘attitude’ are found to be highly occurred keywords.The article written by Drummond, G. B. entitled ‘Reporting ethical matters in The Journal of Physiology: standards and advice’ is found to be highly cited in overall output of plagiarism literature. The stakeholder of this research would be benefited from the quantitative information on the theme of plagiarism. The problem of plagiarism in the process of establishing academic integrity culture at Georgian higher educational institutions

The Georgian educational system was not familiar with the concept of plagiarism during the Soviet era. The purpose of the article is to study whether the mechanisms for plagiarism prevention in Georgian higher education institutions have been improved as a result of the application of new authorisation standards and international practices; it explores efforts made at the university level. The research has shown that universities have increased awareness of plagiarism, the Turnitin program was executed, syllabi were modified with the support of foreign partners and additional services supporting academic writing skills were introduced. The article discusses the pros and cons of the Turnitin program, as well as its challenges and limitations: it tackles severe cases of plagiarism but it is difficult to identify a more disguised form of plagiarism. The work reviews the new challenges and provides ways to address them in the form of recommendations.

Students’ Perception on Plagiarism and Usage of Turnitin Anti-Plagiarism Software: The Role of the Library

Plagiarism adversely affects contributions to knowledge and the goal of instilling the skill of academic writing. Thus, most institutions of higher learning strive to develop mechanisms to help students understand the importance of academic integrity and reasons why they should avoid plagiarism. In many of these institutions, libraries/librarians play an integral role in academic integrity instruction as it is incorporated into information literacy instruction. This study examined students’ understanding of plagiarism and the influence of Turnitin anti-plagiarism software on academic writing. The study used the survey research design. Using stratified and simple random sampling methods, questionnaires were administered to 175 students. Findings from the study revealed that efforts made by the university through seminars have influenced the perception of students on the concept of plagiarism and acts which constitute plagiarism. Though respondents agree with the fact that the use of Turnitin software influences academic writing positively, knowledge about the existence and usage of this software is low since the total number of students who had no idea about the university’s subscription to the software was higher than those who did. Additionally, many of the respondents had difficulty understanding originality reports generated by the software and most were not aware of the existence of the university’s policy on plagiarism. The study recommends for the library to intensify training on the usage and interpretation of similarity reports that are generated by the software as well as making the university’s policy on plagiarism more visible or otherwise lose the capital and efforts invested in producing graduates who can contribute to knowledge and scholarship ethically.

Publishing in hijacked Web of Science journals: Analytical and legal study

This study aimed at a legal and scientific analysis of the plagiarized journals within the Web of Science system, in a time when the phenomenon of plagiarism and piracy spread to the titles of scientific and humanities magazines. Researchers sought to analyze the concept of plagiarism of international scientific journals based on its definition in scientific publishing, its dimensions and danger at the academic level of the researcher, and the academic and institutional level of the university. It also analyzed the types of plagiarism that include cloning, copying, substitution, mixing, and repetition as well as the scientific publishing of forged magazines that are no less dangerous and effective than the spoofed magazines. The study obtained several results, the most important of which is the risk for researchers to lose academic promotion and face direct penalties that hinder their path when appropriating funds through unaccredited scientific publications. The study has also reached specific criteria that the researcher must adhere to when seeking publication, the most important of which is the use of accredited websites of scientific journals and international publishers.

Analytical Study of Traditional and Intelligent Textual Plagiarism Detection Approaches

The Web provides various kinds of data and applications that are readily available to explore and are considered a powerful tool for humans. Copyright violation in web documents occurs when there is an unauthorized copy of the information or text from the original document on the web; this violation is known as Plagiarism. Plagiarism Detection (PD)can be defined as the procedure that finds similarities between a document and other documents based on lexical, semantic, and syntactic textual features. The approaches for numeric representation (vectorization) of text like Vector Space Model (VSM) and word embedding along with text similarity measures such as cosine and jaccard are very necessary for plagiarism detection. This paper deals with the concepts of plagiarism, kinds of plagiarism, textual features, text similarity measures, and plagiarism detection methods, which are based on intelligent or traditional techniques. Furthermore, different types of traditional and algorithms of deep learning for instance, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) are discussed as a plagiarism detector. Besides that, this work reviews many other papers that give attention to the topic of Plagiarism and its detection.

Detecting and avoiding plagiarism in an academic context

É apresentada a proposta de um projeto de intervenção de combate ao plágio académico desenvolvida numa unidade curricular de um curso de graduação em Ciência da Informação, em que é adotado o ensino baseado em projetos (project based learning). A contextualização teórica do trabalho fundamenta-se numa revisão da literatura sobre o conceito de plágio e sobre ferramentas digitais de deteção de plágio. É descrita a metodologia e os objetivos do projeto de deteção e combate ao plágio, além de serem apresentados os outputs resultantes da sua implementação. É dada ênfase especial à identificação, análise e avaliação de 10 ferramentas digitais de deteção de plágio, com base numa grelha de critérios definidos para o efeito. Deste procedimento resultou a seleção das três melhores ferramentas (PlagScan, Urkund e Plag.pt), as quais são apresentadas com mais detalhe. Adicionalmente, são apresentados os materiais concebidos para usar numa estratégia de combate ao plágio numa comunidade académica. Fundamenta-se a relevância do trabalho no relato de experiência de práticas didáticas inovadoras na formação graduada em Ciência da Informação, através do recurso ao ensino baseado em projetos, e na divulgação e avaliação de ferramentas de deteção de plágio, enquadradas numa estratégia mais lata de combate ao plágio em ambiente académico.

OOPS, I SAID IT AGAIN … SELFPLAGIARISM OR TEXT RE-USE: WHEN OR IS IT ACCEPTABLE?

This article looks at the issue of self-plagiarism. Self-plagiarism occurs when an author re-uses work, in another publication, which has already been published. This may be the recycling of an entire article or it may be that the author re-uses text of already published works. Sometimes this is a legal issue because the re-use of already published works may be contrary to copyright law. In other instances the issue may be an ethical one, regarded in the same light as plagiarism. It is not always unlawful or unethical to republish works, but the boundaries of acceptable behaviour are not always easy to establish. This article seeks to establish what constitutes self-plagiarism taking into consideration the concept of plagiarism as well as certain principles of copyright law. The article concludes by suggesting that universities and journals adopt codes of conduct which outline in more detail the boundaries of self-plagiarism.

Plagiarism in higher education across nations: a case of language students

PurposeMany scholars have recognized the cultural dependency of the concept of plagiarism and have investigated the influence of cultural attitude on university students' plagiarism; however, since the findings are inconsistent and because plagiarism is a major concern in academic institutions in Asia, we were motivated to examine the understanding and prevalence of plagiarism among Canadian and some Asian language students.Design/methodology/approachTo elicit the data, the questionnaire developed by Maxwell et al. (2008) was adapted for this study. The scale included three sections. In the initial section, the students' background information was inquired. Section two included 10 scenarios, all of which consisted of two levels; understanding and experience. Section three of the scale consisted of five open-ended questions. In fact, the questions intended to complement the survey findings. Finally, in the fourth section, five yes/no questions were asked. Because the respondents could evade answering some open-ended questions, we developed five questions with yes/no answers in order to probe deeper into the participants' answers.FindingsThe results showed significant differences among the participants concerning both understanding and prevalence of plagiarism. Most of the differences were between Canadian and Asian students in that Canadians had a higher level of understanding. They also enjoyed a lower rate of incidence of plagiarism. Nevertheless, further analyses revealed that the students' academic misconduct is probably influenced by other factors including lack of proper education rather than cultural differences.Social implicationsThe findings lead us to argue that cultural differences may not be the main source of the prevalence of plagiarism across nations and that Asian language university students plagiarize mainly due to a lack of understanding of the principles of plagiarism. Therefore, Asian universities should take measures to make sure that they promote language students' understanding regarding the misconduct.Originality/valueApart from a few studies, no other study has scrutinized plagiarism across cultures. As such, our study attempted to shed more light on the student, especially language students' plagiarism across different nations.

Attitudes of students at the faculty of Regional Development and International Studies toward plagiarism

Abstract This study aims to identify student attitudes to and perceptions of the topical phenomenon of plagiarism at the Faculty of Regional Development and International Studies at Mendel University in Brno, Czech Republic. The paper includes a theoretical framework describing plagiarism, academic ethics and provides a different perspective on plagiarism by many authors. Furthermore, the article presents a semi-structured questionnaire conducted in July 2018 with a sample of 235 respondents. The questionnaire was used in this research to explore students’ personal experiences, recommendations and other information relating to their attitudes to and perceptions of plagiarism. The results indicate that FRDIS students were familiar with the concept of plagiarism but not always able to clearly identify the correct answers. The recommendation for the Faculty, based on the data analysis, is to hold a tutorial on all the important aspects of plagiarism, such as citations, referencing, and common mistakes. This paper concludes that plagiarism can only be eliminated if it is tackled at the prevention phase, not merely through the use of warnings and threats.

Avtorske pravice v češki literaturi na prelomu 19. in 20. stoletja: Jiráskov spor za Pasjeglavce

Razprava obravnava teoretske in zgodovinske vidike avtorskega prava v obdobju Habsburške monarhije na primeru nedovoljene gledališke priredbe romana Aloisa Jiráska Pasjeglavci (Psohlavci), ki jo je 1899 pod naslovom Jan Sladký Kozina napisal in uprizoril Jan Baptist Kühnl (1849–1904), dramatik, prevajalec in eden prvih plagiatorjev v zgodovini češke književnosti. Leta 1899 je Jirásek dobil tožbo proti nezakoniti uprizoritvi na podlagi cesarskega zakona št. 197/1895 o zaščiti avtorskih pravic za literarna, umetniška in fotografska dela, ki je nadgradil cesarski patent iz leta 1846 (nekatere formulacije v njem so prešle v avtorsko pravo neodvisne Češkoslovaške). Toda leta 1920 sta Kühnlovi vdova Marie in hči Marie Luisa igro izdali v knjižni obliki, pri čemer sta besedilo iz leta 1899 le jezikovno posodobili. Jirásek je l. 1921 dobil še eno tožbo proti plagiatorstvu, ki kaže na pomen avtorskih pravic kot manifestacije duhovne, nesnovne lastnine, ki jo je treba pravno zaščititi, z literarnega vidika pa demonstrira primer plagiata kot neinventivne imitacije, ki si izposoja »celotno zgradbo, romaneskno zgodbo in posamezne sestavine« literarnega dela.

PLAGIARISM AS A WORLDWIDE TENDENCY

Objective. The objective of the article is to investigate manifestations of academic dishonesty, including plagiarism as a worldwide tendency in the student environment. Methods. The main scientific results areobtained through the use of a marketing research method, including a survey, analysis of the data obtained in order to find out the most acute causes of academic fraud, academic culture violations and student integrity. Results. Plagiarism is an urgent problem of nowadays as it is part of our lives and will continue to occupy a leading position for many more decades to come. The plagiarism tendency is observed not only in Ukraine but in all other countries of the world. However, there are different ways of controlling this disease in the 21st century. Therefore, in view of the subject of research, it becomes necessary to specify the content of the concepts of «plagiarism» and «academic plagiarism» in the student environment and to study the reasons for resorting to various forms of academic dishonesty. In researching the issue of academic plagiarism in the student environment, it was found that most students are familiar with the concept of plagiarism, but only 2 % can explain its essence. Such superficial awareness leads to the next 62 % of respondents who take foreign texts as their academic texts and resort to translation, or translate from other languages into Ukrainian — 19 %. An important role is played by the method of submission of educational material, where students point out the need and expediency of using innovative teaching technologies in higher education, which significantly affects the level of knowledge, the quality of students’ professional skills and abilities. It has also been found that the existing assessment system does not always correspond to the objectivity of assessing students’ level of knowledge and does not motivate them to avoid academic fraud. However, young people acknowledge that they deliberately resort to it because of the need to write a large number of academic texts throughout the semester, especially since the existence of effective punishment within higher education and scientific settings is now formal. Continued development of this aspect of life and conformist attitude to it will lead to catastrophic consequences. First of all, the stagnation of all aspects of human experience will begin. There will be a constant accumulation of material that will later grow into a distrust of the scientific field by humans. Therefore, plagiarism is a decisive problem in the modern development of society, in the formation of a proper and informative dialogue between scientists. Setting up the wrong principles for writing off has created many negative consequences that humanity is addressing to this day. The effectiveness of counteracting plagiarism should be maintained by the state, because without legal support, punishments cease to be a punitive instrument and turn into a recommendation direction. Rethinking the situation will provide a solid basis in many areas of the human community.

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices of Plagiarism as Reported by Participants Completing the AuthorAID MOOC on Research Writing.

To explore the knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding plagiarism in a large culturally diverse sample of researchers who participated in the AuthorAID MOOC on Research Writing. An online survey was designed and delivered through Google Forms to the participants in the AuthorAID MOOC on Research Writing during April to June 2017. A total of 765 participants completed the survey (response rate 47.8%), and 746 responses were included in the analysis. Almost all participants (97.6%) reported knowledge of the term "plagiarism", and 89.1% of them understand the meaning of the term before joining the course. Most participants reported that their university does not provide access to plagiarism detection software (82.0%), and 35% participants admitted they had been involved in plagiarism during their education. Overall attitudes toward plagiarism (65.3 ± 10.93) indicated low acceptance of plagiarism. Moreover, low scores were reported for approval attitude (25.22 ± 5.63), disapproval attitude (11.78 ± 3.64), and knowledge of subjective norms (20.63 ± 5.22). The most common reason for plagiarizing was lack of time (16.1%), and the most common consequence was the perception that "those who plagiarize are not respected or seen positively" (71.4%). Developing country researchers appear to be familiar with the concept of plagiarism, but knowledge among the participants surveyed here was incomplete. Knowledge about plagiarism and awareness of its harmfulness must be improved, because there is an obvious relationship between attitudes toward plagiarism and knowledge, reasons and consequences. The use of plagiarism-detection software can raise awareness about plagiarism.

Perspectives for early-career researchers on plagiarism and scientific integrity

Lapses in scientific integrity, such as plagiarism, persist in the scientific realm. To be successful and contributory, early-career researchers (ECRs), including graduate students, need to be able to effectively navigate the literature, peer-review process, and scientific research with integrity. Here we discuss different aspects of scientific integrity related to ECRs. Our discussion centres on the concepts of plagiarism and intellectual property, predatory journals, aspects of peer review, transparency in publishing, and false advanced accreditations. Negative elements within these topics may be especially damaging to ECRs, who may be less familiar with the research landscape. We highlight the need for ECRs to approach scientific investigation cautiously and thoughtfully to promote integrity through critical thinking.

Validación del cuestionario de atribuciones para la detección de coincidencias en trabajos académicos

El plagio como tópico de investigación en el contexto universitario no ha cesado de ser una preocupación constante debido a sus múltiples repercusiones. El presente estudio describe el proceso seguido en la validación del Cuestionario de atribuciones para la detección de coincidencias en trabajos académicos (CUDECO), cuya finalidad es evaluar la relevancia que tiene citar correctamente y detectar las causas que llevan a cometer plagio. A partir de una muestra de 2,331 estudiantes, se realiza un análisis de la fiabilidad como consistencia interna y un análisis factorial exploratorio (AFE) del instrumento. El análisis de la fiabilidad lleva a proponer un reajuste en el cuestionario inicialmente diseñado y el estudio factorial sugiere una estructura configurada por cinco factores: concepto de plagio y sus tipos (parcial y total), causas que motivan la comisión del mismo tanto internas (propias del sujeto) como externas (ajenas al sujeto) y las actitudes del grupo de iguales hacia el plagio, hallazgos en la línea de investigaciones previas.

Perceptions of Graduate Students at the University of São Paulo about Plagiarism Practices in Academic Works.

Our objective was to identify the understanding of theoretical aspects and the interpretation of practical situations that a sample of 3,623 graduate students (Population = 22,438) at the University of São Paulo (Brazil) have regarding academic plagiarism. The survey used an electronic questionnaire containing 30 multiple choice questions developed from the literature concerning the concept and definition of plagiarism, occurrence modality, types of plagiarism, reasons for occurrence, standards and preventive actions adopted. We identified that the fact of respondents agreeing or disagreeing with the theoretical-conceptual characteristics of plagiarism did not make a difference in their capacity of correctly assessing practical situations characterizing plagiarism. Moreover, the agreement or disagreement responses regarding the concepts of plagiarism were observed not to differ among the respondents who had been trained to use references and citations. However, the same respondents correctly interpret practical situations characterizing plagiarism. Therefore, this study suggests that there is a gap between theoretical and practical knowledge regarding plagiarism for graduate students. Although the technical training related to the correct use of research sources is an important prerequisite in the capacity-building process, it does not seem to be enough to prevent plagiarism practices.
