Model-Guided Generative Adversarial Networks for Unsupervised Fine-Grained Image Generation

Unsupervised fine-grained image generation is a challenging issue in computer vision. Although many recent significant advances have improved performance, the ability to synthesize photo-realistic images in an unsupervised manner remains extremely difficult. The existing methods compose an image via complex three-stage generative adversarial networks and impose constraints between the latent codes. This pipeline focuses on the disentanglement and ignores the quality of generated images. In this article, we propose a novel two-stage approach for unsupervised fine-grained image generation, termed Model-Guided Generative Adversarial Networks (MG-GAN). We introduce an attention module for exploring the correlation between fine-grained latent codes and image features in the foreground generation stage. The attention module enables the network to automatically focus on the color details and semantic concepts of objects related to different fine-grained classes. Furthermore, we incorporate knowledge distillation strategy and design a simple but effective inverse background image generator as a teacher to guide the background image generation. With the help of knowledge learned in the pre-trained inverse background image generator, a comfortable canvas is synthesized and combined with foreground object more reasonably. Extensive experiments on three popularly fine-grained datasets demonstrate that our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance and is even competitive with semi-supervised method.

Schiller's Critique of Kant's Aesthetic Philosophy

This article aims to demonstrate that Schiller began his aesthetic thought by critically evaluating Kant's Critique of Judgment. What most prompted Schiller to reflect and subsequently develop his own theories was Kant's dualism concerning the relationship between necessity and freedom, or the dichotomy of sense and reason. Schiller's dissatisfaction with these dualisms led him to pursue unity, ultimately finding that the perception of beauty is a harmonizing experience. In his critique of Kant's purely subjectivist view of beauty, Schiller introduced an objective concept of beauty as freedom in appearance. Finally, in an attempt to reconcile the two realms of aesthetic and moral experience, Schiller criticized Kant’s distinction between aesthetics and ethics, arguing that for humans to become moral, they require preparatory measures, which can only be provided through aesthetic education.

Review of age assessment methods of children and adolescents by teeth X-rays

Interest in the topic of age assessment for forensic medical identification of personality has not decreased for over the past decade. Establishing an exact age have a critical importance for law enforcement authorities, for example in case of wrongdoing by illegal migrants without identity documents. The search and systemic analysis of published researches devoted to age assessment by dental status in children and adolescents with subsequent updating of the directions of development in this scientific subject theme and the possibility of their realization in practice in the Russian Federation were carried out in order to have an objective concept of used methods of dental status assessment in the world practice.

Truth over Democracy or Democracy over Truth?

Paul Feyerabend and Richard Rorty were both famously suspicious of an objective concept of truth, in part because they shared the suspicion that concepts like truth and reason were irrevocably anti-democratic. As Feyerabend saw it, an overreliance on a naive objectivist conception of truth and rationality encouraged a “tyranny of truth”, one according to which science should have an overly privileged role to play in deciding what society ought to do. Similarly, Rorty believed truth was a concept ill-suited for democracy. In this paper, I offer some brief reflections on the view that political truth is ill-suited for democratic politics. I argue that Rorty and Feyerabend are right that the concepts of truth and knowledge have political meaning, and that as a result, the question of “who knows” (and who doesn't) are partly political questions. But while Feyerbеnd was right to think we cannot give priority to the epistemic over the political in democracy, neither, I conclude, should we reverse that priority.

영아의 생태친화적 오감놀이에 대한 의미 탐색

This study is to develop alternative eco-friendly programs for daycare centers that do not have the conditions to practice eco-friendly childcare, such as daycare facilities and natural environments applying eco-friendly five sense play using an ethnography study. For this study, eco-friendly five-sensory play was conducted for infants aged 0 to 2 years old at a home-based daycare center, and participant observation was conducted. The development of eco-friendly five senses play was carried out in the first stage of becoming familiar with the subject matter, the second stage of leading integrated play, and the third stage of connection and expansion play, and was developed in a circular manner. The research results were derived from the meaning that infants' eco-friendly five-sensory play has on the infants and teachers in the daily routine of the daycare center. The research results are as follows. First, the meaning of eco-friendly five-sensory play for infants was summarized as imitating the play of teachers and peers, opportunities for more interactions, connecting previous and current experiences, expanding the concept of specific objects, and artistic experience. Second, the meaning of eco-friendly play to teachers is learning together with infants, becoming a playmate for infants, being a person who shares infants' experiences, providing learning opportunities through recognition of experiences, and opportunities for natural integration of the contents of the play-centered Standard Child Care Curriculum. The significance of the study is daycare centers in residential areas and small home daycare centers can provide opportunities for interaction and play that fully utilizes the five senses by providing natural objects in the classroom.

Decoding the Meaning of Tumpeng in Roland Barthes’s Semiology Perspective

This research uses Roland Barthes's theoretical framework to investigate the cultural importance of the traditional Indonesian dish, Tumpeng. In order to better comprehend this cultural artifact, this study seeks to unravel the underlying symbolic meanings and dimensions that are constructed throughout the Tumpeng tradition. It also shows how Barthes's concepts of objects, interpretations, and myths might be useful in this endeavor. It draws attention to the connections among cuisine, culture, and semiotics and emphasizes the relevance of Tumpeng as a unique expression of Indonesian cuisine. This study shows that Tumpeng functions as a potent cultural signifier within Indonesian society, representing communal identity, social hierarchy, and spirituality through an investigation of its visual and philosophical aspects. Tumpeng's aesthetic style, color scheme, and physical arrangement all convey ideas about societal norms and beliefs. Practices of Tumpeng consumption also entail several layers of interpretation, whereby personal and collective meanings are created and communicated. Further, by decoding the meaning of Tumpeng, it is hoped to comprehend the interactions between cultural artifacts, interpretation, and myth-making techniques.

MODERN APPROACHES OF DEVELOPMENT COMPANIES TO THE CONCEPT OF RESIDENTIAL BUILDING OBJECTS

The article examines the modern approaches of development companies to the concept of residential construction objects, due to the awareness of the need to adapt residential buildings to the new realities of wartime. A study of the concept of a residential construction object was conducted as a specification of the appearance of the future object, which is being developed in order to organize all external factors that affect the formation of the object of the urban environment: the cultural and architectural code of the city or district, the interests and goals of the investor, opportunities modern construction technologies, convenience, comfort and compliance with the expectations of the end user. The meaning of the concept is revealed as one of the most complex, important and responsible aspects of the development company's activity. The goal of developing a relevant, popular and modern concept for the formation of a future housing construction object was established. The main constituent elements of the housing object concept are considered. 
 Special attention is paid to the experience of Israel, which, in order to adapt to life in a state of war, had to create a construction concept that corresponds to their harsh realities, and this is also relevant for Ukraine today. The main principles of the approach of Israeli specialists to the problem of protection, based on many years of experience of living under shelling, are considered. The factors that hinder the quick, professional response of legislators, developers, and builders with appropriate changes in the norms and rules of the construction of buildings and structures to the dangerous challenges of war in Ukraine are given and analyzed. 
 It is proven that development companies, realizing the need to adapt housing construction objects to new realities, changing their approaches to housing construction, are obliged to contribute as much as possible to the creation of modern, comfortable and safe spaces for residents, which should be reflected in every point and section of the concept object of residential construction.
 It was noted that the philosophy of modern development is a safe, comfortable space for the residents of the house.

Marketing of agricultural products in the Law for the Protection and Development of Agricultural Production in the Kurdistan Region - Iraq, and its Evaluation in Islamic Jurisprudence

Marketing of agricultural products is the main factor for the continuity of dealing in the production of any crop or not, and it has an important role in encouraging farmers and urging them to improve the quality of their production; Which leads to an increase in demand, and then activates this cycle of the economic cycle.
 Muslim jurists, in the past and in recent times, talked about rules relating to the market, marketing operations, its organization and control, and the supervision of all economic operations in it.
 On the other hand, the parliament in the Kurdistan Region - Iraq spoke about the process of marketing agricultural products through some articles in the law on agricultural development issued in “2008 AD” No. “4”, under the title “Law for the Protection and Development of Agricultural Production in the Kurdistan Region – Iraq”.
 This research evaluates the legal articles relating to marketing of agricultural products contained in the Law "Protecting and Developing Agricultural Production in the Kurdistan Region - Iraq" in the light of Islamic jurisprudence; This is in terms of the extent to which those articles agree with Islamic jurisprudence.
 The first topic is devoted to the concept of agricultural marketing, its elements, and objectives.
 In the second topic, light was shed on the texts related to the marketing of agricultural products contained in the Law “Protecting and Developing Agricultural Production in the Kurdistan Region - Iraq”, then the research showed the most important criteria for agricultural marketing in Islamic jurisprudence, and then compared and evaluated the legal texts contained in the said law in Islamic jurisprudence.
 At the end of the research, the researcher reached a set of conclusions, including: that what was stated in the law on “Protection and Development of Agricultural Production in the Kurdistan Region - Iraq” about marketing agricultural products is a good thing; However, it is not sufficient on the subject, as compared to Islamic jurisprudence, it shows that what is stated in it is much less than what was stated in Islamic jurisprudence on this subject.

Content Analysis of Online News Portal Coverage of Covid-19 Vactination Issues in Indonesia

Online news portal is the substantial sources of information for the public, especially regarding the COVID-19 vaccination. Reviewing emerging themes and content on online news portals can provide insight for policymakers and stakeholders to interpret the diversity of information flows. The purpose of this study is to describe the tendency of presenting news and the objectivity of reporting on the online news portal kompas.com regarding the issue of covid-19 vaccination in Indonesia. This study uses the concept of objectivity which is divided into two dimensions, namely the factual dimension and the impartial dimension. The factual dimension contains sub-dimensions of truth, informative, and relevance. The impartiality dimension consists of balance and neutrality sub-dimensions. This research uses quantitative content analysis method. The population in this study is news text articles on news portal Kompas.com from January 1 to March 31, 2021 as many as 1,961 news, with a margin of error of 8%, obtained a sample of 145 news. Based on the research results, Kompas.com presents news in hard news format using short paragraphs. In relation to the COVID-19 vaccination, Kompas.com presents a lot of news related to the implementation of the COVID-19 vaccination with the government (both central and regional) as the main resource person. Regarding objectivity, there is a clear effort from Kompas.com in producing objective news that already looks good, but the standard of objectivity must be further improved.

Pioneering "Experimental Heroes" of Turkish Cinema

While the narrative tradition, which has been developing for thousands of years, can be examined by dividing it into three parts as Drama, Lyricos and Epos, since the discovery of cinematography 127 years ago, narrative in cinema has developed narratives parallel to the two most basic theories of cinema, Realistic Film Theory and Formalist Film Theory, as well as contributing to experimental, feminist, etc. narratives in addition to these theories. The main purpose of this article is to examine three different pioneering films and heroes of Turkish Cinema (Umut-Yılmaz Güney-hero: Cabbar, Anayurt Oteli-Ömer Kavur-hero: Zebercet, Uzak-Nuri Bilge Ceylan-hero: Mahmut), which were shot in a realistic theme, and to reveal how they developed their heroes and what kind of experience they offered to the audience with the heroes they presented, starting from the literary narrative genre Epos. Based on the concept of objectivity, the presentations of the heroes were examined by using the cinema's own language and forms with the cooperation of the screenwriter-director.

On the object of a functional semiology: towards a typology of indices

The article touches upon two problems that arose in the development of semiology in the second half of the twentieth century, namely: (1) the debate over the proper object of semiology: signification or communication? and (2) the problem of how a typology of indices (indications), which underlies the conception of the proper object of semiology, can be established. In order to tackle these problems, the article restricts itself to a treatment of the works by the main representatives of a functional semiology, to wit, Georges Mounin, Eric Buyssens and Luis Prieto. Especially the works of Prieto are used to unravel a typology of indices that ultimately allows to conceive the object of a specific semiology of signification and to clearly present its aims.

History Teaching In A Museological Space

This paper aims to discuss issues concerning the teaching of History in museological spaces, based on the narrative of an experience at the Rio Grande do Sul Memorial, a place that generated the teaching-learning process of students who visited this space. We start from the narrative of the mediated educational action on the itinerant exhibition “Monuments and art: the history of the city at risk”, which exposed a series of monuments and public statues taken from the streets of Porto Alegre. By means of these pieces, the mediation sought to reflect on the silenced stories behind those sculptures, aiming to perceive other actors and groups silenced by the patrimonialization process. From a theoretical point of view, it drew on Vygotsky (2010) and Bakhtin (1992), with regard to interactive mediation; Siman (2013), with regard to teaching History through reading the city; and Ramos (2016), on the concept of generator object. Finally, it is believed that the students took possession of plural historical narratives about the city, through the narratives exposed and silenced by the urban historical heritage.

The intimate thing that makes her feel at home: An analysis of the diasporic objects of women migrants

Accelerating globalisation and transnational migration in recent decades has led to an increasing number of women migrants. This phenomenon calls for an investigation of women’s identities as migrants. This article examines women migrants’ sense of belonging through their everyday material practices. I draw on the concept of diasporic objects to examine the material objects that women migrants take with them, which function as prisms for their relationships to their national cultures. I adopt a theoretical framework of intimacy – including national intimacy, intimate culture and diasporic intimacy – to examine how women relate to their nations via a nation–family continuum. Through an analysis of 18 women migrants’ narratives about their diasporic objects, I argue that the diasporic objects of women migrants articulate their domestic and familial life and connect them with their imagined national cultures. Their concept of ‘home’ is haunted by memories of war, patriarchal oppression and authoritarianism. I conclude by discussing how they use their diasporic objects to transform the idea of home into a rooted and transitive concept.

An Order-Theoretic Study on Formal Concept Analysis

This paper employs an order-theoretic framework to explore the intricacies of formal concepts. Initially, we establish a natural correspondence among formal contexts, preorders, and the resulting partially ordered sets (posets). Leveraging this foundation, we provide insightful characterizations of atoms and coatoms within finite concept lattices, drawing upon object intents. Expanding from the induced poset originating from a formal context, we extend these characterizations to discern join-irreducible and meet-irreducible elements within finite concept lattices. Contrary to a longstanding misunderstanding, our analysis reveals that not all object and attribute concepts are irreducible. This revelation challenges the conventional belief that rough approximations, grounded in irreducible concepts, offer sufficient coverage. Motivated by this realization, the paper introduces a novel concept: rough conceptual approximations. Unlike the conventional definition of object equivalence classes in Pawlakian approximation spaces, we redefine them by tapping into the extent of an object concept. Demonstrating their equivalence, we establish that rough conceptual approximations align seamlessly with approximation operators in the generalized approximation space associated with the preorder corresponding to a formal context. To illustrate the practical implications of these theoretical findings, we present concrete examples. Furthermore, we delve into the significance and potential applications of our proposed rough conceptual approximations, shedding light on their utility in real-world scenarios.

Hippocampal Functions Modulate Transfer-Appropriate Cortical Representations Supporting Subsequent Memory.

The hippocampus plays a central role as a coordinate system or index of information stored in neocortical loci. Nonetheless, it remains unclear how hippocampal processes integrate with cortical information to facilitate successful memory encoding. Thus, the goal of the current study was to identify specific hippocampal-cortical interactions that support object encoding. We collected fMRI data while 19 human participants (7 female and 12 male) encoded images of real-world objects and tested their memory for object concepts and image exemplars (i.e., conceptual and perceptual memory). Representational similarity analysis revealed robust representations of visual and semantic information in canonical visual (e.g., occipital cortex) and semantic (e.g., angular gyrus) regions in the cortex, but not in the hippocampus. Critically, hippocampal functions modulated the mnemonic impact of cortical representations that are most pertinent to future memory demands, or transfer-appropriate representations Subsequent perceptual memory was best predicted by the strength of visual representations in ventromedial occipital cortex in coordination with hippocampal activity and pattern information during encoding. In parallel, subsequent conceptual memory was best predicted by the strength of semantic representations in left inferior frontal gyrus and angular gyrus in coordination with either hippocampal activity or semantic representational strength during encoding. We found no evidence for transfer-incongruent hippocampal-cortical interactions supporting subsequent memory (i.e., no hippocampal interactions with cortical visual/semantic representations supported conceptual/perceptual memory). Collectively, these results suggest that diverse hippocampal functions flexibly modulate cortical representations of object properties to satisfy distinct future memory demands.Significance Statement The hippocampus is theorized to index pieces of information stored throughout the cortex to support episodic memory. Yet how hippocampal processes integrate with cortical representation of stimulus information remains unclear. Using fMRI, we examined various forms of hippocampal-cortical interactions during object encoding in relation to subsequent performance on conceptual and perceptual memory tests. Our results revealed novel hippocampal-cortical interactions that utilize semantic and visual representations in transfer-appropriate manners: conceptual memory supported by hippocampal modulation of frontoparietal semantic representations, and perceptual memory supported by hippocampal modulation of occipital visual representations. These findings provide important insights into the neural mechanisms underlying the formation of information-rich episodic memory and underscore the value of studying the flexible interplay between brain regions for complex cognition.

When stories are not the same: power and powerlessness in a Nigerian Museum

ABSTRACT In this paper, we provide an alternative reading to one of the most fundamental claims of the exhibitionary complex, which argues that museums are symbols of power, greatness, wealth, and progress. On the contrary, we adopt Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann's (1996) concept of social constructionism and Star & Griesemer's concept of the border object and infrastructure to deconstruct the possibility of the fixity of meaning in Bennett's argument about the exhibitionary complex. We therefore argue that the many museums in Africa are slightly different. Rather than being a symbol of the people's power, wealth, and greatness, they reflect powerlessness and pain, which characterise their history. With histories such as the Transatlantic slave trade and British imperialism, which lasted through the 17th and 19th centuries, we discuss the Badagry Black Heritage Museum as a site not exclusively about power and greatness. The paper concludes that the defining characteristic of museums is their diversity, which offers multiple perspectives on their functionality, significance, and theoretical underpinnings. While Bennett's idea is laudable, there is a need to open up the concept of accommodating the specific features of museums across the world and develop new concepts or ideologies that reflect them.

An absence of imperfections: A proposed framework for defining, assessing, and achieving skin glow.

Skin glow is a subcomponent of skin quality. It has become entrenched in the cosmeceuticals and aesthetics lexicons as a synonym for health and youth, but is not well-defined as a scientific metric. To examine the concept of skin glow and determine if it is an objective concept that can be defined and quantified. Literature review was used to develop a survey on current concepts relating to skin quality. The survey results were analyzed descriptively and presented to a focus group comprising five dermatologists and four aesthetic physicians. This group then discussed the concept of skin glow, how to define it and what metrics could be used to assess it. Surveyed practitioners (n = 38) ranked skin quality as the fourth most important factor related to a person's overall aesthetic first impression. Almost all (95%) respondents reported routinely assessing skin quality, citing serial photography (83%), and visual inspection (67%) as the main means of achieving this. The focus group defined skin glow as even reflectance from an unaffected papillary and reticular dermal collagen layer, which is created only when skin does not exhibit any characteristics that detract from this even reflectance. Due to its complexity, the focus group proposed a hierarchal framework for assessment, encompassing patient self-rating, practitioner severity rating, and supplemental use of validated measurement devices. Skin glow can be defined and quantified. More work is warranted to develop a practical skin glow assessment tool suitable for use in the clinic setting.

Undergraduate students’ conceptualization of elementary row operations in solving systems of linear equations

The concept of systems of linear equations (SLEs) is fundamental and core in linear algebra, a subject, which has many applications in a number of disciplines. Gaussian elimination is a versatile method, which can be used to solve almost all types of SLEs by using row-reductions. This study focused on exploring undergraduate students’ conceptualizations of elementary row operations (EROs) as a means to solve SLEs. The purpose of this study was to explore undergraduate students’ conceptualizations of row reductions and their applications to the solutions of systems of equations. The perspectives of the action-process-object-schema theoretical framework were used in analyzing data and discussing the findings. To explore the students’ conceptualization of EROs, a descriptive research approach was followed. I considered a case study of 131 students registered for a mathematics for educators course, where linear algebra was one of the topics. The findings revealed that students attained the action conception of reducing a system with unique solutions but had challenges reducing and interpreting solutions to a system with non-unique solutions. The latter row-reduction implored process and object conceptions especially when variable elements in the augmented matrix were involved. As students find the learning of linear algebra difficult, this study contributes to the debate in literature on how to improve its teaching and make suggestions on the ways make more effective the learning of linear algebra.
