METAPHOR AS A MEANS OF THE LINGUO-CULTURAL CONCEPT “AMERICAN DREAM” VERBALIZATION – TRANSLATION ASPECT

The purpose of the article is to consider the problem of verbalization of the linguistic and cultural concept AMERICAN DREAM through metaphor in the works of F. S. Fitzgerald and in translations by M. Pinchevsky. The theoretical and methodological basis of our research isthe scientific works of O. Borysova, A. Bondarenko, O. Vorobiova, O. Ladyka, A. Ogar and others. The research methodology is comprehensive, using various methods and techniques, including the translation-comparative method of analyzing original and translated texts with the use of elements of contextual and quantitative analysis.The relevance of the study lies in the fact that the functions of F. S. Fitzgerald’s linguistic and stylistic devices were identified and investigated, namely, the construction of the figurative and conceptual structure of the work. The article reveals the concept, paying special attention to metaphors, their classification, use, and translation. The results of the study of the problem of verbalization of the linguistic and cultural concept AMERICAN DREAM through metaphor in F. S. Fitzgerald’s works and in M. Pinchevsky’s translations reveal the conceptual, syntactic and semantic components of the considered expressive means in the translation aspect, as well as show the differences in the language norms of English and Ukrainian, which is of great importance for improving the methods translation of texts loaded with linguistic and stylistic techniques.

Learning beyond borders: lifelong learning and learning culture in Islamic institutions in the pursuit of quality education

Purpose The concept of lifelong learning and learning culture in education generally refers to the continuous acquisition of knowledge and skills throughout one's life, extending beyond formal education while learning culture is the creation of learning opportunities, resources and support systems that empower individuals to continuously enhance their knowledge and skills. Lifelong learning and a learning culture contribute significantly to the realization of SDG 4 by promoting inclusive, equitable and quality education that prepares individuals for a lifetime of learning and adaptation in a changing world. This paper aims to identify the level of understanding of school’s community regarding these concepts and measuring the implementation level and readiness of primary schools across Malaysia. Design/methodology/approach Employing a mixed-methods approach, the initial qualitative phase involved interviewing teachers to know their level of understanding regarding the concept of lifelong learning and learning culture. The subsequent quantitative phase assessed the readiness and implementation level of 35 primary schools across Malaysia. Findings An interview that been done has successfully collected the viewpoints of teachers about lifelong learning and learning culture. A survey administered to primary schools affiliated with the MUSLEH organization affirmed the readiness and implementation level of schools in which it was found that most of the schools has high degree of awareness and understanding regarding the significance of the concepts to be implemented in the education system. Originality/value This study's contributions extend beyond academia, offering insights for educators and policymakers alike. The findings can inform education ministries, curriculum developers and stakeholders, aiding them in providing substantial support to educators aligning with the principles of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

Budaya Organisasi dan Faktor-Faktor yang Membentuknya di Sekolah

This research aims to explore organizational culture and identify its shaping factors in the context of an educational environment. By adopting a case study approach, this research offers an in-depth analysis of the dynamics of organizational culture in a private educational institution in Medan. The research methodology relies on data triangulation through in-depth interviews, direct observation and document review. Thematic analysis was used to process the collected data, enabling a holistic understanding of the phenomenon under study. The research findings revealed that the concept of organizational culture in a school environment is a manifestation of a system of values, beliefs, and patterns of behavior that are collectively embraced by all elements of the school. This study successfully identified several main factors that play a role in the formation of the organizational culture, including: the leadership style of the principal, the individual characteristics of the teachers, the prevailing education policy, and the expectations of the parents. In conclusion, organizational culture in a school environment is formed through a complex interaction of various factors. A deep understanding of these factors can serve as a foundation for educational institutions in their efforts to manage and develop a conducive organizational culture. This in turn is expected to encourage the improvement of learning quality as well as the professional development of educators.

Linguacultural competence in business English communication: the case of a business English textbook in China

ABSTRACT Internationally operating professionals in China study business English to develop their language proficiency and transcultural communicative competence. While a variety of business English textbooks are on the market and are used in China, their conceptualizations of culture tend to be nation-based, static, and predictable – views of culture that have been increasingly problematised in the field of second language teaching and learning. This investigation drew on a research-informed conceptualisation of linguacultural competence that incorporates three theoretical lenses: Business English as a Lingua Franca (BELF), linguaculture, and genre. Competencies identified in the research literature were cross-checked with empirical data from active job-experienced business professionals via semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. These competencies were then used to examine how one popular business English textbook, Market Leader Intermediate, fares in developing linguacultural competence. The results revealed that while the textbook includes opportunities to develop several necessary competencies, many others are not addressed. Further, expressions of culture in the textbook are often simplistic or limited. These findings can inform textbook adaptations and development for effectively inculcating linguacultural competence in internationally functioning professional communicators.

Techné of Rock Engravings—the Timna Case Study

AbstractTraditionally, rock engravings were studied through their visual characteristics. They have been analyzed with comparative and interpretative methodologies of iconography and iconology. However, there has been a recent shift towards identifying production processes, allowing reconstruction of operational characteristics through various methods. Nevertheless, the studies of the technological aspects typically focus on the operational and the mechanical, often omitting the visuality of the outcome. In the current paper, we are using ArchCUT3-D software for computational analysis of 3-D data acquired from various rock engravings located in Timna Park, southern Israel. We show how micro-morphological evidence, extracted from the engraved lines, can decode technical trends and variabilities in a technique’s particular implementation. Then, we conduct a focused examination of one group of engraved figures in order to establish a link between execution techniques and visual considerations. Based on our results and the following discussion, we suggest the term Techné to indicate the choice of technique that goes beyond the instrumental or purely operative perspectives. We highlight the intentional choice, which designs the visual rhetoric of the engraved marks and suggests cultural concepts that contrived the procedural processes.

‘Inter-ideologicality’ in intercultural communication education: co-constructing criticality around the concept of culture in international online student mobility

The world has been experiencing huge upheavals since the COVID-19 crises. Conflicts caused by opposing ideologies, economic-political agendas and realities are rampant within or across borders. Such unsteady circumstances contribute to shifting how Transnational Education (TNE) occurs worldwide, as well as the scientific, epistemic and educational discourses that go with it. Anchored within critical interculturality, this paper explores the concept of ‘inter-ideologicality’. The study looks at short-term online international student mobility to demonstrate how students from China and Finland navigate and negotiate ideologies around the concept of culture in intercultural research and education. The study also employs Wang Chong’s perspectives on criticality to identify emerging ideologies in the co-construction of criticality in students’ online cooperation. Findings reveal that (1) two ideological orientations, nation-oriented and society-oriented, developed during discussions about culture; (2) Finnish students used a specific form of reasoning to contradict Chinese students’ thoughts about Finland by means of criticality towards the nation-oriented ideology; (3) Chinese and Finnish students employed questioning and challenging to help each other be aware of something left unsaid about the status of women in their societies within the society-oriented ideology. The study represents an important meta-approach to intercultural communication education within internationalization of Higher Education, aimed at supporting mobile students to reflect critically on the scientific and educational notion of interculturality rather than providing them with ready-made recipes as to how to communicate and behave interculturally.

Contextualising and challenging under-representation in research in light of Cultural Trauma: a qualitative focus group and interview study

BackgroundAlthough underserved populations— including those from ethnic minority communities and those living in poverty—have worse health and poorer healthcare experiences, most primary care research does not fairly reflect these groups. Patient and public involvement (PPI) is usually embedded within research studies in the United Kingdom (UK), but often fails to represent underserved populations. This study worked with patient and public contributors and local community leaders, situated in a socio-economically deprived and ethnically diverse urban area, to explore under-representation in primary healthcare research.MethodsWe undertook a focus group with a purposive sample of 6 members of a Patient and Public Involvement Group (PPIG), and interviews with 4 community leaders (representing Black, South Asian, Roma and socio-economically deprived communities). An iterative analysis process based on template analysis was used. Focus group 1 was rapidly analysed, and a template created. Findings were presented in focus group 2, and the template further developed. The Cultural Trauma concept was than applied to the template to give a wider theoretical lens. In-depth analysis of focus groups and interviews was then performed based on the template.ResultsWider societal and historical influences have degraded trust in academic and healthcare institutions within underserved populations. Along with more practical considerations, trust underpins personal motivations to engage with research. Researchers need to invest time and resources in prolonged, mutually beneficial engagement with communities of importance to their research, including sharing power and influence over research priorities. Researcher reflexivity regarding differential power and cultural competencies are crucial. Utilising participatory methodologies including co-production demonstrates a commitment to inclusive study design.ConclusionsRe-framing evidence-based medicine to be more useful and relevant to underserved populations with the highest burden of ill health is urgently needed. Lack of representation in primary healthcare research reflects wider societal inequalities, to which Cultural Trauma provides a useful lens. However, there are actions that researchers can take to widen representation. This will ultimately help achieve the goal of increased health equity by enhancing scientific rigour and research generalizability.

Central Asian studies in the People’s Republic of China: a structural topic model

ABSTRACT China has a rich Central Asia studies literature and in recent years, it has seen an expansion in the number of research institutions with a regional focus. We apply a Structural Topic Model, a quantitative method that estimates thematic prevalence through machine learning, to analyse publications on Central Asia in Chinese academic and specialist journals to show how the field has evolved over time. Aside from the methodological contribution we offer an original dataset of 10,563 publications scraped from China’s CNKI database. We test our strategy on two assumptions in Western literature on Chinese academics’ understanding of Central Asia: (1) China’s research institutes are primarily concerned with economics and (2) China’s thinking on strategic regions is lacking in local context, unique cultural concepts and insights. We argue that while China's scholarship on the region is often Sinocentric, some research shows diversity and nuance, with more analytical depth that has been traditionally understood.

Scrutiny of Police Institutions and the Spectre of Culture

AbstractThis article revisits the concept of police culture and its explanatory value in understanding the recent scandals that have rocked policing in England and Wales. It focusses on concerns around the prevalence of sexism and violence against women and girls (VAWG) within policing and explores whether an increase in the diversity of police officers has pushed aspects of police culture into specific specialist and less visible areas of policing. The article suggests that any attempts at substantive police reform need to consider radical organisational and structural change, including a new narrative for British policing. Such a narrative needs political and social support and will require wider engagement beyond internally focussed police discussions.

A Pilot Study of Neologisms in Kuwaiti English.

The present work offers insights into lexical aspects of this emerging variety to systematically look into neologisms in Kuwaiti English (KE) using corpus linguistics methods and techniques. Such research results in a deeper understanding of lexical development, productivity, and creativity in the variety under scrutiny, as well as how reciprocal lexical influences develop within a variety (Anesa 3). The study focuses on a written corpus of 337,102 words to see whether or not written English-language texts in Kuwait can provide sufficient data worthy of further exploration. The current project in broad strokes focuses on (i) local neologisms and (ii) L2 neologisms. To flesh out the latter, namely suffixation, compounding, and borrowing, a predetermined list, wildcards, and corpus query language (CQL) were used. For the former, keyness analysis was used, and it was found that this technique provided more insight into indigenous words than suffixation, compounding, predetermined lists, wildcards, and CQL, all of which did not reveal sufficient evidence of neologisms in KE. Overall, keyness analysis was the most successful method in uncovering neologisms in the corpus. As the data indicate, the most productive features of KE seem to be those that are related to culture or religion. It could identify words that were not detected by the other methods. Moreover, more research should be done on more types of neologisms, such as blends, in order to obtain a better understanding of the use of English in Kuwait. According to the study, neologisms are used because they are practical, culturally influenced, and socially acceptable. Additionally, KE neologisms are mainly the result of semantic change, such as semantic restriction. Research on neologisms, especially geared towards understanding cultural or religious concepts incorporated within a variety, seems to be best examined using keyness analysis as it highlights such terms and concepts effectively.

DIGITAL CULTURE AS A COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE IN THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF ORGANIZATIONS

The article explores the concept of digital culture as a key component for organizations seeking sustainable development and competitive advantage in today's rapidly evolving business landscape. It delves into how embracing a digital culture within an organization can lead to enhanced efficiency, innovation, and overall performance. By fostering a culture that values digital skills, collaboration, and adaptability, companies are better equipped to navigate challenges and leverage opportunities in the digital age. There's no denying that there has been a noticeable increase in interest in recent years for solutions that support the sustainable development of organizations. In such a context, a key factor for increasing the efficiency of these processes is effective change management and its detailed knowledge. The management of human resources is affected by these management relationships, which guide it toward the strategic prioritizing of particular areas. However, given the evolving importance of technology and all of its associated aspects and activities, it is necessary to concentrate on identifying a new management paradigm, or digital culture. This is where we should also include the tendency, the primary driving force behind the changes, to be expressed in the understanding that increases in an organization's effectiveness have a direct connection to the human factor, and from there to innovative practices, talent management, motivational policies, and other aspects of personnel management. Therefore, in the search for sustainable development policies, human resources should be considered as organizational capital.

PERSPECTIVES AND DIRECTIONS OF DEVELOPMENT OF ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE IN THE DIGITAL AGE

In the conditions of the strong development of digital technologies, the business of organizations in a traditional environment becomes very tight. New digital technologies have implications for modern business operations. Digital trends require changes not only in the way business organizations work (jobs, workplaces and employees) but also a change in the entire concept of organizational culture (behavior and thinking of employees). In order for digital technologies not to become an obstacle to the business of modern organizations, in our work we will identify a new organizational culture that is able to support new technologies. At the same time, we will look at the key elements of the traditional organizational culture, which we have to transform. In the final part, with the aim of improving the business of business organizations, guidelines will be given for the development of a new digital organizational culture that will contribute to the improvement of business, all in the context of adapting to new digital technologies. In the study of digital transformation and organizational culture, the authors employ analytical and synthetic approaches to achieve a deeper understanding. The analytical approach deconstructs elements through qualitative analysis, while the synthetic approach integrates information and theories to form a comprehensive concept. These approaches enable the identification of optimal strategies for different contexts, which is crucial for this study. Overall, the study contributes to theoretical understanding of digital transformation and organizational culture, while also offering practical guidance for organizations undergoing the process of digital transformation.

Perceptions on Traditional Minority Sports: Bases for the Improvement of the Physical Education Curriculum

This study aimed to analyze the current situation of traditional minority sports curriculum teaching in Guangxi universities and to propose future development directions for the curriculum based on the research results. By combining qualitative and quantitative methods, this paper makes data statistics on traditional minority sports from the aspects of current situation, teaching environment and curriculum reform, and analyzes the relevant statistical data. The data collected in this study were 400 students, 73 teachers, and 20 college officials from four universities. The respondents are continuously concerned about the teaching objectives, teaching status and teaching influencing factors of traditional minority sports courses in schools. Through the interviews with the investigators, some useful suggestions are put forward for the future school PE teaching and curriculum reform. Based on the survey and research results, the researcher proposed suggestions for physical education in universities and schools in Guangxi. The researchers proposed updating teaching methods, improving work incentive mechanisms, and constructing excellent ethnic cultural inheritance concepts that have profound significance for enhancing the inheritance and development of traditional minority sports.

Study on the Impact of Packaging Design Elements and Perceived Value of Sugar-Free Tea Beverages on Consumer Purchasing Behavior

Purpose: This study aimed to assist brands in understanding market trends and consumer expectations accurately and guide targeted adjustments and innovations in the packaging design of sugar-free tea. Research design, data, and methodology: This study conducted an online survey of mainland Chinese consumers from May 5 to 14, 2024, collecting 412 valid responses. SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 23.0 were used for data analysis and structural equation modeling. Results: According to the study, among the packaging design elements and perceived value dimensions of sugar-free tea, information clarity, and cultural value were the most influential, while visual aesthetics and health value had the least impact. In addition, satisfaction was found to mediate the relationship between packaging design, perceived value, and purchasing behavior. Conclusions: Compared to the elegant and sophisticated designs, eco-friendly packaging that is clear in information and incorporates cultural elements, health concepts, and emotional factors significantly enhances consumer satisfaction, promoting purchasing behavior.

Cultural Globalization and Education Strategy to Develop Cultural Literacy and Digital

The globalization of culture and education has had a significant impact on how people and communities engage, learn, and prosper. This globalization process facilitates a faster and broader exchange of cultural concepts, values, and customs through digital tools, enhancing global perspectives and increasing the availability of a wide variety of educational materials. Within this framework, cultural and digital literacy is increasingly important as a key skill that individuals need to have in today's world. Cultural literacy includes awareness and appreciation of cultural diversity, along with the capacity to communicate and engage effectively with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. On the other hand, digital literacy involves the skills to utilize information and communication technology in a professional and ethical manner. Literacy advancement requires an approach that is embedded in the academic syllabus, incorporates the use of digital tools for education, and highlights the teaching of values such as tolerance, empathy, and acceptance of cultural differences. Strategies to increase cultural and digital literacy consist of: (1) Increasing accessibility and utilization of digital tools in education, (2) Combining project-based learning with international and cross-cultural collaboration, (3) Providing professional development for educators in using inclusive technologies and teaching methods, and (4) Advocate for cultural and virtual exchange programs to provide students with first-hand experience of global cultural diversity. Therefore, cultural and digital literacy not only increases individual capacity to adapt to changes in globalization but also forms a society that is more inclusive and ready to face future challenges.

Word Formation and Semantic Features of Composites in Verbal Word-Forming Nests With the Base Word ‘Lyubit’/ ‘Lieben’ in Russian and German

The aim of this study is to identify the word formation, semantic, and stylistic features of words with complex bases within Russian and German verb nests, centered around the base verbs lyubit’ / lieben (‘to love’). This research unveils the word-forming and semantic potential of these base verbs by analyzing their complex derivatives and comparing the composites derived from lyubit’ and lieben. Empirical data were collected through continuous sampling, and the word formation analysis method was employed to describe the formation processes of the units in question. Epidigmatic analysis was utilized to examine their semantic structures, complemented by quantitative assessments of frequency and distribution. The findings indicate that word composition is the predominant method of forming complex words in both languages’ verb nests, with a notable prevalence of composite nouns that exhibit a subordinate relationship between bases and are monosemantic. The study also reveals that while fusion is a method of producing composites in Russian, in German, it is limited to compound words. Reduplication, as seen in Russian composites like lyubish-ne-lyubish (‘love-not-love’), is absent in German. The study concludes, that the analyzed words are integral to the professional lexicon of psychologists, criminologists, biologists, botanists, and others. Beyond their terminological meanings, these complex lexemes encapsulate cultural concepts that mirror the mentalities of Russian and German speakers. Recognizing these concepts is crucial for effective communication across various fields, particularly in professional contexts.
