OPTIMIZATION OF LIQUIDSOAP FORMULATION

The quality of liquid soap for washing hands depends on its chemical composition, and it is evaluated by the physicochemical and functional characteristics of that product. The aim of the work is to prepare different series of liquid soap formulations by varying the concentrations of anionic and amphoteric surfactantsand sodium chloride, and to optimize the formulation. The effects of the optimization were evaluated based on the results of the analysis of the physico-chemical parameters of the prepared formulations, such as density, viscosity, surface tension and critical concentration of micelles. As amphoteric and anionic surfactant concentrations in liquid soap increase, density and viscosity values increase. The value of the surface tension decreases with the increase in the concentration of the surfactants present, with the amphoteric surfactant making a greater contribution to the decrease. Regardless of certain advantages that the anionic surfactant shows in relation to the amphoteric one, the best characteristics of the liquid soap are shown by the formulation thatcontains a combination of both used surfactants. The addition of NaCl to the liquid soap formulation has multiple significance, but also a different effect on the physical and chemical characteristics at lower and higher concentrations. Functional and some physico-chemical characteristics of liquid hand washing soap depend on the pH value of the formulation. As the pH value increases, the surface tension and CMC increase to certain values, so pH=5.5 is taken as the optimal pH value of liquid soap, as a compromise between the values of the measured characteristics and the pH value of human skin. This research showed that the formulation containing 5.4w/w%anionic surfactant, 1w/w%amphoteric surfactant and 4w/w% NaCl represents the optimal liquid soap formulation. Evaluating the Extraction and Quantification of Marine Surfactants from Seawater through Solid Phase Extraction and Subsequent Colorimetric Analyses.

Surfactants are amphiphilic molecules that adsorb to interfaces and affect the interfacial tension. Surfactants in seawater can impact gas-exchange, surface properties, and the composition and fate of sea spray aerosol. The accurate quantification of surfactants and their classes is crucial to constraining the effect of surfactants in seawater and their role in air-sea exchanges. Here, we evaluate and optimize a solid phase extraction (SPE) method paired with colorimetry and UV-vis spectroscopy to quantify the concentrations of anionic, cationic, and nonionic surfactants in seawater. We compare tandem SPE with two-step SPE and different elution volumes and evaluate the impact of different interferents. Improved extraction efficiencies were obtained with an 8 mL acetonitrile elution and with separate ENVI-18 and ENVI-Carb extractions, instead of tandem. With complex surfactant mixtures, the presence of anionic surfactants interfered with the quantification of cationic surfactants and caused underestimations of up to 83%. Using a two-step extraction and analyzing each seawater SPE extract separately during colorimetric quantification help avoid the effects of interferents and ensure more representative quantification of surfactants. With this method, average seawater surfactant concentrations ranged from 0.04 to 0.06 μM. At the highest concentrations, the class composition comprised 23% anionic, 21% cationic, and 56% nonionic surfactants.

Exploration of solubilisation effects facilitated by the combination of Soluplus® with ionic surfactants

Preclinical testing of new drug candidates frequently necessitates high-dose solution formulations to support robust testing in rodent models. This study aimed to expand the range of high solubilisation capacity formulations by exploring the solubilisation effects of the polymeric surfactant Soluplus® in combination with ionic surfactants. The interactions between Soluplus® and three ionic surfactants, sodium dodecyl sulfate, dioctyl sodium succinate, and sodium oleate, with a primary focus on solubility enhancement were investigated over a range of ionic surfactant concentrations. The solubilisation profiles for seven model drugs were obtained, and the vehicles were characterized by their visual characteristics, dynamic light scattering, and viscosity measurements. The solubilisation profiles were non-linear, indicating the formation of different colloidal species with individual solubilisation strengths depending on surfactant type and concentration, demonstrating substantial solubility enhancement. For certain drugs more than additive solubilisation, facilitated by synergistic interactions between Soluplus® and the ionic surfactants, was obtained. Overall, the solubility increase provided by the excipient combinations resulted in non-linear and drug specific solubilisation profiles. The non-linearities observed were reflected in visual observations of the vehicles appearance, DLS and viscosity measurements, which collectively indicated a change in polymer aggregation with increasing concentration of anionic surfactant. This investigation highlights that already low quantities of ionic surfactants introduced to Soluplus® may substantially enhance solubility, which offers a promising approach for further exploration in preclinical drug development where more conventional solubilising formulation strategies may fall short.

Laboratory features in acute paediatric poisoning with liquid laundry detergent capsules: a seven-year retrospective study in Romania

Introduction The epidemiological and clinical characteristics of acute poisoning with liquid laundry detergent capsules have been comprehensively reported. However, studies of laboratory test results in these exposures are uncommon. This study analyzed the impact of the ingestion of liquid laundry detergent capsules on admission laboratory tests in paediatric patients. Methods This retrospective study was conducted in the clinical toxicology unit of a paediatric poison centre between 2015 and 2021. Paediatric patients (less than 18 years of age) who ingested liquid laundry detergent capsules were included. The relationship between the European Association of Poisons Centers and Clinical Toxicologists/European Commission/International Programme on Chemical Safety Poisoning Severity Score and admission laboratory test results was assessed using Fisher’s exact test or analysis of variance. Results A total of 156 patients were included in the study. A considerable proportion of patients presented with leucocytosis, acidosis, hyperlactataemia or base deficit. The median values of white blood cell count (P = 0.042), pH (P = 0.022), and base excess (P = 0.013) were significantly different among the Poisoning Severity Score groups. Hyperlactataemia was strongly associated with the Poisoning Severity Score (P = 0.003). Discussion Leucocytosis is a non-specific marker of severity following ingestion of liquid laundry detergent capsules. The incidence of metabolic acidosis and hyperlactataemia was higher in this study than in previous reports, but these metabolic features were not related to the severity of exposure. The exact mechanisms of toxicity are not yet known, but the high concentration of non-ionic and anionic surfactants, as well as propylene glycol and ethanol, in the capsule are likely contributing factors. Conclusions Pediatric patients who ingest liquid laundry detergent capsules may develop leucocytosis, metabolic acidosis, hyperlactataemia, and a base deficit.

The increasing environmental pollution is one of the consequences of human activities that continue to expand. The environment has limitations in coping with pollutants generated by humans, such as waste from the laundry industry. This research aims to evaluate the combined effect of zeolite produced from corn cobs and the use of microorganisms capable of degrading anionic surfactants, with the goal of reducing the concentration of anionic surfactants in laundry wastewater. The methods used include adsorption using corn cobs as adsorbents and biodegradation using surfactant-degrading bacteria. Morphological observations using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) indicate that the produced zeolite has a crystal structure that stacks up like clumps of cubes. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis shows that zeolite synthesized with a silica extraction ratio from corn cobs and sodium aluminate of 20:20 mL has been successfully conducted. The biodegradation process of anionic surfactants in laundry wastewater using a combination of synthesized zeolite and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria employing the Methylene Blue Alkyl Substance (MBAS) method has shown a decrease in concentration to 1.66 mg/L and degradation of 33.55%, especially in sample 3 with variations of 7.5 grams of corn cob zeolite and 15% microorganisms, during a 5-day experiment.

Surfactants and Microbial Aerosol of Urban Particulate Matter (PM10) in Kuala Lumpur City Centre

Surfactants in the atmosphere potentially influence the global climate and may affect human health. This study aims to determine the compositions of surfactants extracted from urban particulate matter (PM10) and motor vehicle exhaust soot. In addition, microbial aerosol was also determined. A high-volume air sampler (HVAS) has been used to collect PM10 samples in Kuala Lumpur urban area. Meanwhile, the vehicle exhaust soot was collected randomly from the exhaust pipes of various types of diesel and petrol vehicles, using a soft brush during dry days. The concentration of anionic surfactants as Methylene Blue Active Substances (MBAS) was determined by the colorimetric method using a UV-Vis Spectrophotometer. The presence of microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi were investigated by colony count. In addition, the correlation between surfactants and traffic-related air pollutants has also been investigated. Results revealed that the average concentration of MBAS in particulate matter is 107.68 ± 7.91 µgm-3. Diesel vehicles demonstrated higher surfactant concentration in exhaust particulate matter with an average value of 0.227 ± 0.006 µmolg-1 compared to petrol vehicles (0.146 ± 0.003 µmolg-1). Based on this study, various mitigation procedures can be implemented to reduce the impacts of PM and exhaust soot for a better future.

Enhance electrocoagulation-flotation (ECF) removal efficiency perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) by adding surfactants

This research focuses on the application of electrocoagulation-flotation (ECF) in the removal of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFHxA), a prevalent short-chain perfluoroalkyl substance in semiconductor manufacturing, especially at concentrations of industrial wastewater levels. We explored the effectiveness of ECF, which employs sacrificial electrodes to create metal ions and bubbles for pollution extraction. The study particularly examines the role of various surfactants in augmenting PFHxA removal. We observed that at an initial PFHxA concentration of 1 mM, both anionic and cationic surfactants modestly increased removal efficiency, with limited impact from electrostatic repulsion. Significantly, at a higher concentration of 5.0 mM, cationic surfactants, notably DTAB with its short carbon chain, markedly enhanced PFHxA elimination. The superior performance of DTAB is attributed to its facilitation in Al(OH)3 crystal formation, promoting PFHxA adsorption, efficient micelle or bubble formation with PFHxA, and the stability of resulting flocs. Our findings underscore the efficacy of DTAB as a surfactant in ECF for high-concentration PFHxA scenarios, emphasizing the importance of surfactant and electrode material selection in optimizing PFAS treatment in wastewater systems. This study contributes valuable insights into refining PFAS remediation strategies in real industrial wastewater applications.

Adsorption of anionic dyes onto 1,5-Diphenylcarbazide functionalized magnetic hybrid polymer: Impact of water salinity and surfactants on adsorption isotherms

Herein, an effective hybrid adsorbent based on magnetic chitosan (MC) and magnetic glycidyl methacrylate (Mp(GMA)) was synthesized. The prepared hybrid material was functionalized by 1,5-Diphenylcarbazide (DPC), then employed for the adsorption of two anionic dyes (Coomassie brilliant blue G-250; CBB, and Eosin Y; EO) from their synthetic solutions. The as-fabricated adsorbent (MC-Mp(GMA)/DPC) was specifically investigated via FTIR, SEM-EDX, BET, TGA, and VSM analyses. The influence of several operational key factors; initial solution pH, initial dye concentration, contact time, temperature, and influence of cationic, anionic surfactant, and salinity on adsorption isotherms were investigated. The findings revealed that MC-Mp(GMA)/DPC highest adsorption capacities were recorded in the presence of cationic surfactant (0.795, 0.817 mmol g−1 for CBB and EO, respectively) and salinity hardly affects adsorption isotherms. Moreover, the adsorption process of each dye was reported to fit with the Langmuir model at all conditions, while the PSORE model well-defined their adsorption kinetics. Meanwhile, thermodynamics revealed that the separation of CBB and EO dyes was endothermic. Moreover, MC-Mp(GMA)/DPC possessed a desirable efficacy for the regeneration (e.g., 77.9% and 71.7 for CBB and EO, respectively) up to the 4th cycle, affirming its outstanding renewability. Overall, the produced MC-Mp(GMA)/DPC can potentially be offered as a promising recyclable dye scavenger for wastewater remediation.

The effect of anionic surfactant type and concentration on the development of waterborne nitrocellulose

To better understand the gel emulsification method as an efficient method for producing waterborne nitrocellulose coatings [1–3], the effect of anionic surfactant type (sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS)) and concentration on the emulsification process was investigated. In the case of using SDBS, it was not possible to produce nitrocellulose emulsion via the gel emulsification method while emulsions with submicron size were produced using SDS. Contrary to what might be thought, in the gel emulsification method, high surfactant concentrations did not contribute to better drop breakage and led to catastrophic phase inversion. In addition, increasing surfactant concentration increased the hydrophilicity of the final coatings and decreased their chemical and mechanical properties.

Konsentrasi Limbah Pencemar MBAS (Methylen Blue Active Substance) pada Perairan Muara Kali Ijo, Kabupaten Kebumen

Muara Kali Ijo is the place where rivers flow in Kebumen Regency, which carry a lot of domestic wastes resulting from sanitation activities, namely detergent. The study aims to determine the quality of Muara Kali Ijo Waters based on MBAS concentration (Methylen Blue Active Substances). MBAS is a standard method for determining the concentration of anionic surfactants in detergents. This study uses descriptive methods with purposive random sampling techniques. Sampling was carried out on March 11, 2023 with a total of five stations. The results of the analysis of the MBAS concentration in the BBSPJPPI laboratory ranged from 0.031 – 0.064 mg/L and the measurement of water quality parameters was still relatively good, below the quality standard threshold. PCA results show that there is a negative correlation between MBAS concentration and water quality parameters. Productive anthropogenic activities around the area have a potential to contribute detergent waste from washing activities and increase MBAS concentrations.

Emulsification of Indian heavy crude oil and analysis of flow characteristics using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for pipeline transportation

The high viscosity of Indian heavy crude oils makes their pipeline transportation highly complicated and challenging. A huge pressure drop is observed while transporting heavy crude through pipelines. The present article addresses this complication by preparing a surfactant stabilized heavy crude oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion of a flowable viscosity to ease flow through pipelines. Different O/W emulsion samples were prepared with varying concentrations of a novel anionic surfactant, linear alkylbenzene sulfonic acid (LABSA), to achieve an optimized formulation based on rheological and stability studies. The article also discusses the effect of varying surfactant concentrations on interfacial tension, droplet size and distribution, and zeta potential of the developed emulsions. The optimized emulsion, having 60 vol% oil and 2 wt% surfactant, was further considered to simulate and analyze the flow characteristics (static pressure and velocity profiles) across the horizontal pipelines of three different inner diameters (0.1, 0.05, and 0.025 m) under three different inlet flow velocities (0.1, 0.05, and 0.001 m/s), using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. A remarkable decrease in the viscosity of heavy crude was noted after emulsification. Subsequently, the pressure drop across the pipeline was reduced significantly by order of three for the flow of O/W emulsion when compared to that of the heavy crude oil through a pipe diameter of 0.1 m at an inlet velocity of 0.1 m/s. The static pressure drop across the pipeline decreased with the increase in the pipe diameter; in contrast, it increased with the increase in the inlet velocity.

Structure-based modeling of critical micelle concentration (CMC) of anionic surfactants in brine using intelligent methods

Critical micelle concentration (CMC) is one of the main physico-chemical properties of surface-active agents, also known as surfactants, with diverse theoretical and industrial applications. It is influenced by basic parameters such as temperature, pH, salinity, and the chemical structure of surfactants. Most studies have only estimated CMC at fixed conditions based on the surfactant’s chemical parameters. In the present study, we aimed to develop a set of novel and applicable models for estimating CMC of well-known anionic surfactants by considering both the molecular properties of surfactants and basic affecting factors such as salinity, pH, and temperature as modeling parameters. We employed the quantitative-structural property relationship technique to employ the molecular parameters of surfactant ions. We collected 488 CMC values from literature for 111 sodium-based anionic surfactants, including sulfate types, sulfonate, benzene sulfonate, sulfosuccinate, and polyoxyethylene sulfate. We computed 1410 optimized molecular descriptors for each surfactant using Dragon software to be utilized in the modelling processes. The enhanced replacement method was used for selecting the most effective descriptors for the CMC. A multivariate linear model and two non-linear models are the outputs of the present study. The non-linear models were produced using two robust machine learning approaches, stochastic gradient boosting (SGB) trees and genetic programming (GP). Statistical assessment showed highly applicable and acceptable accuracy of the newly developed models (RSGB2 = 0.999395 and RGP2 = 0.954946). The ultimate results showed the superiority and greater ability of the SGB method for making confident predictions.

Environmental concentrations of anionic surfactants in lake surface microlayers enhance the toxicity of Microcystis blooms: Insight from photosynthesis, interspecies competition, and MC production

Anionic surfactants represented by linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) exhibit vertical heterogeneity of concentrations in aquatic environments owing to their amphiphilic structure. Field investigations showed that the concentration of anionic surfactants (mainly LAS) in the water surface microlayer (SML) of Lake Taihu reached 580 μg/L, higher than that in the lower layer. Floating Microcystis blooms overlap in space with the high concentration of anionic surfactants in SML. However, few studies have focused on the effects of anionic surfactants (e.g., LAS) on the interspecies competition between toxic and nontoxic Microcystis. In this study, coculture and monoculture experiments were conducted with both toxic and nontoxic Microcystis species to explore how the environmental concentration of LAS regulates the dominance of toxic Microcystis and toxicity from the perspective of photosynthesis, species dominance, and MC production. The results showed that LAS concentrations above 0.267 or 0.431 mg/L (depending on light conditions) selectively promoted the photosynthetic competitive advantage of toxic Microcystis, leading to its higher population proportion in the community. Additionally, LAS concentrations above 0.5 mg/L induced the synthesis and release of microcystins (MCs). The results of chlorophyll fluorescence analysis, electron microscopy and transcriptome sequencing suggested that compared with nontoxic Microcystis, toxic Microcystis can better resist LAS stress by dissipating excess light, maintaining an intact membrane structure and maintaining cellular homeostasis. Transcriptome sequencing revealed that the photosynthetic damage of nontoxic Microcystis might be attributed to the impacts of LAS on the absorption and assimilation of nitrogen, which finally resulted in the degradation of phycobilisomes. This study can provide novel insight for establishing standards and safety management of wastewater discharge.

A Novel Study on Anionic Surfactant Degradation Potential of Psychrophillic and Psychrotolerant Pseudomonas spp. Identified from Surfactant-contaminated River Water.

The Yamuna River, a tributary of the holy Ganga, is heavily polluted in the Delhi-NCR region, India and has been gaining attention due to the excessive foaming of the river over the past few years. This can be directly or indirectly related to the overuse of surfactants and the discharge of untreated domestic and textile wastewater into the river. To determine the surfactant load and investigate potential surfactant-degrading bacteria in the region, 96 water samples from four sites in the Okhla Barrage stretch of the river were collected and analysed. The results showed that the selected sites have surfactant concentrations more than the permissible limit (1.00 mgL-1). Also, at most of the sites, the concentration crossed the desirable limit of BIS (0.2 mgL-1) during the period of analysis. The concentration of anionic surfactant reported in the region was found in the range of 0.29 mgL-1 and 2.83 mgL-1. A total of 38 different bacteria were isolated using selective media from the same water samples, out of which 7 bacterial isolates were screened for sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) tolerance activity. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing, 2 species, namely Pseudomonas koreensis YRW-02 and Pseudomonas songnenensis YRW-05 have been identified and their degradation potential was assessed at different SDS concentrations. The results showed that our strains YRW-02 and YRW-05 degraded 78.29 and 69.24% of SDS respectively. Growth optimization was also performed at different substrate concentrations, pH, and temperature to investigate optimum degradation conditions. This study plays a significant role in assessing the surfactant load and also gives a promising background for future use in in-situ bioremediation experiments.

Stability of the emulsion during the injection of anionic and cationic surfactants in the presence of various salts

Smart water injection is one of the engineering techniques to enhance oil recovery (EOR) from carbonate and sandstone reservoirs that have been widely used in recent decades. Wettability alteration and IFT are among the essential and influential mechanisms that can be mentioned to achieve EOR. One of the critical issues in the field of EOR is the effect of reservoir ions on the formation and stability of the emulsion. Investigating the role and performance of these ions during EOR processes is of significant importance. These processes are based on smart water injection and natural production. In this research, stability was investigated and formed during the injection of different concentrations of anionic and cationic surfactants, respectively alpha olefin sulfonate (AOS) and cetrimonium bromide (CTAB), into a water–oil emulsion with a volume ratio of 30–70. Considering the droplet diameter distribution and the flow speed of separation by centrifugation, the optimal concentration level has been investigated in both surfactants. Based on the results, the highest stability and emulsion formation occurred in the presence of AOS surfactant. Then different concentrations of CaCl2, MgCl2, and NaCl salts were added in optimal concentrations of both surfactants. The formation and stability of the emulsion was checked by examining the distribution of the droplet diameter and the separation flow rate. AOS anionic surfactant had the most stability in the presence of MgCl2 salt, and better performance in stability of the emulsion was obtained. The maximum number of droplet diameters in the optimal concentration for AOS and CTAB surfactant systems is 1010 and 880, respectively, and for binary systems of AOS surfactant and MgCl2, CaCl2 and NaCl salts, it is 2200, 1120 and 1110, respectively. Furthermore, for the CTAB binary system in the presence of MgCl2, CaCl2, and NaCl salts, it is 1200, 1110, and 1100, respectively. The stability of the emulsion of salts in the presence of both AOS and CTAB surfactants was MgCl2 > CaCl2 > NaCl.

Spotlight on reversible emulsification and demulsification of tetradecane-water mixtures using CO2/N2 switchable surfactants: Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation

CO2/N2 switchable surfactants have recently attracted significant attention in enhanced oil recovery. Their environmental and economic benefits are the main driving forces for their application in the oil and gas industry. This study evaluated mixtures of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), C18 naphthalene sulfonate (C18PS), and CO2-switchable acetamidine surfactant N′-dodecyl-N, N-dimethylacetamidine (C12DMAA) in water/dodecane systems by using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The effects of the molecular structure of anionic surfactant and surfactant concentration on switchable emulsification and demulsification in an oil/water/SDS or C18PS/C12DMAA system triggered by CO2/N2 injection were investigated. The molecule mobility, hydration behavior, density field analysis, diffusion coefficient, radial distribution functions (RDFs), and the density profiles of various systems were thoroughly examined. Based on MD simulation outputs, increasing surfactant concentration can intensify a demulsification process and create a clear phase separation between water and tetradecane. On the other hand, during an emulsification process, adding more surfactant monomers improved a hydration layer around oil droplets and increased hydrogen bonds; however, the contribution of hydrogen bonds between water and N′-dodecyl-N, N-dimethylacetamidinium (C12DMAAH+) compared to SDS and C18PS is limited. MD simulations proved the switchability of SDS/C12DMAA and C18PS/C12DMAA for emulsification and demulsification processes. The results of the current study will be beneficial for developing and optimizing the switchable surfactant structures for further use in the oil and gas industry through surfactant injection.

Influence of vehicular emissions and meteorological factors towards anionic surfactants in the urban atmospheric aerosol of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

This study aimed to determine the influence of vehicular emissions and meteorological factors on the level of surfactants in urban atmospheric aerosol from Kuala Lumpur city center, Malaysia. Aerosol samples were collected using a high-volume sampler equipped with the cascade impactor to separate fine mode (< 1.5 µm) and coarse mode (> 1.5 µm) particles. Besides, the exhaust particulate matter from various diesel and petrol vehicles was collected using a soft brush during dry weather. Colorimetric analysis was performed to determine the concentration of anionic surfactants as methylene blue active substances (MBAS), and the absorption was determined by using a UV spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 650 nm. Correlation analysis was conducted to determine the influence of vehicular emissions (NOx, SO2, CO and O3), and exhaust particulate matter on the level of surfactants. Results showed that surfactants as MBAS in fine particles showed the dominant values. Correlation analysis showed that the MBAS was positively correlated with NOx (p <0.05) and SO2 (p <0.01), and negatively correlated with O3 (p <0.01), which indicated that the traffic-related air pollutant may influence the anionic surfactants level. It is supported by the high level of MBAS in diesel exhaust particulate matter, particularly from the construction machinery, followed by lorries and buses.

Simultaneous determination of volatile phenol, cyanide, anionic surfactant, and ammonia nitrogen in drinking water by a continuous flow analyzer

This study developed a method for the simultaneous determination of volatile phenol, cyanide, anionic surfactant, and ammonia nitrogen in drinking water, using a continuous flow analyzer. The samples were first distilled at 145 °C. The phenol in the distillate then subsequently reacted with alkaline ferricyanide and 4-aminoantipyrine to form a red complex that was measured colorimetrically at 505 nm. Cyanide in the distillate subsequently reacted with chloramine T to form cyanogen chloride, which then formed a blue complex with pyridinecarboxylic acid that was measured colorimetrically at 630 nm. The anionic surfactant reacted with basic methylene blue to form a compound that was extracted into chloroform and washed with acidic methylene blue to remove interfering substances. The blue compound in chloroform was determined colorimetrically at 660 nm. Ammonia reacted with salicylate and chlorine from dichloroisocyanuric acid to produce indophenol blue at 37 °C in an alkaline environment that was measured at 660 nm. The relative standard deviations were 0.75–6.10% and 0.36–5.41%, respectively, and the recoveries were 96.2–103.6% and 96.0–102.4% when the mass concentration of volatile phenol and cyanide was in the range of 2–100 μg/L. The linear correlation coefficients were ≥ 0.9999, and the detection limits were1.2 μg/L and 0.9 μg/L, respectively. The relative standard deviations were 0.27–4.86% and 0.33–5.39%, and the recoveries were 93.7–107.0% and 94.4–101.7%. When the mass concentration of anionic surfactant and ammonia nitrogen was 10–1000 μg/L. The linear correlation coefficients were 0.9995 and 0.9999, and the detection limits were 10.7 μg/L and 7.3 μg/L, respectively. When compared to the national standard method, no statistically significant difference was found. This approach saves time and labor, has a lower detection limit, higher precision and accuracy, less contamination, and is more appropriate for the analysis and determination of large-volume samples.

Synthetic surfactants in drinking and surface waters in Armenia and apparent non-association with some diseases

The main goal of this study is to compare the concentrations of anionic synthetic surfactants (ASS) in drinking and surface waters in Armenia and to explore possible relationship with diseases of the skin and digestive system. Surfactants are widely employed in numerous field of the economy, are in contact with the entire population throughout life and can be harmful to human health.The samples of drinking and surface waters (n = 144) were collected in Kotayk province to analyze ASS concentrations, physicochemical parameters and phytotoxic activity. The prevalence of diseases was analyzed for different population groups. ASS concentrations in surface waters were significantly higher in summer compared to spring (p = 0.006). In drinking water, concentrations were also higher in summer, but not significantly. In surface waters, ASS levels were 2.4-3 times higher compared to drinking (p = 0.03) and exceeded the permissible limit by 1.4-2.9 times in summer and fall. No phytotoxic activity and differences in both classes of diseases and age groups were revealed. The determination of ASS in both surface and drinking waters with the same trend showed their interrelation to a certain extent. This study provides important information for future research and action which will contribute to the sustainable development of local communities.
