Microbial pollution assessment in semi-exposed relics: A case study of the K9901 pit of the mausoleum of emperor Qin Shihuang

Summer and autumn are peak tourist seasons, during which tourists congregate in semi-exposed site museums, heightening the possibility of damage both to the tourists and the exposed relics by airborne microorganisms. This study investigated the spatiotemporal distribution of microbial aerosols and the diversity of the microbial genera inside and outside the Emperor Qin Shihuang Mausoleum K9901 Pit. Furthermore, the risk of museum personnel exposure to microbial aerosols was also quantitatively assessed. The results showed that the bacterial aerosol concentrations were 3.5 and 2.5 times the WHO limits (500 CFU/m3) in summer and autumn, respectively. Similarly, the fungal aerosol concentrations in summer and autumn were, respectively, 0.9 and 4.3 times the ACGIH limits (500 CFU/m3). The percentages of bacterial and fungal aerosols in the museum with particle sizes smaller than 4.7 μm were as high as 80.2–89.5 % and 83.2 %–93.2 %, respectively. The count median diameter was at level V of the Anderson sampler (1.1–2.1 μm). The risk of these aerosols being inhaled by personnel and entering the lower respiratory tract was significant. The dominant microbial genera detected had conditional pathogenicity (e.g., Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas) and allergenicity (e.g., Aspergillus and Talaromyces). Regarding tourists, the potential exposure dose (PED) was higher for children than for adults and the elderly. Staff were exposed for longer periods and had 18 times the PED of tourists of the same age, which put them at greater risk. This study offers valuable insights for developing effective environmental optimization measures to protect site museums and public health.

Non-thermal plasma for decontamination of bacteria trapped in particulate matter filters: plasma source characteristics and antibacterial potential

The aims of this study encompass the characterization of process parameters and the antimicrobial potential during operation of a novel non-thermal plasma (NTP) source in a duct system containing a particulate matter (PM) filter thus mimicking the interior of an air purifier. Simulating conditions of a long-term operation scenario, in which bacterial aerosols in indoor environments accumulate on PM filters, the filter surfaces were artificially inoculated with Escherichia coli (E. coli) and exposed to an air stream enriched with reactive species. Electrical power consumption, key plasma parameters, volume flow and air flow velocity, reactive gas species concentrations as well as inactivation rates of E. coli were assessed. The NTP operated at a gas temperature close to ambient air temperature and featured a mean electron energy of 9.4 eV and an electron density of 1∙1019 m−3. Ozone was found to be the dominating reactive gas species with concentrations of approx. 10 ppm in close vicinity to the PM filters. An inactivation rate of 99.96 % could be observed after exposure of the PM filters to the gas stream for 15 min. This inactivation efficiency appears very competitive in combating realistic bacterial aerosol concentrations in indoor environments.

Assessment of personal deposited dose and particle size distribution of bacterial aerosol in kindergarten located in southern Poland

The study's primary focus lies in examining the relationship between respiratory and deposition doses of bacterial aerosols in urban kindergarten, providing valuable insights into the specific doses absorbed by individuals in different sections of their respiratory systems based on the aerodynamic diameter of bacterial particles. Samples were collected twice a week, using by an Andersen cascade impactor during autumn and winter seasons 2018/2019 resulting in a total of 1152 Petri dishes analyzed. The highest average concentration of bacterial aerosol was observed during autumn (1698 ± 663 CFU/m3) in comparison to winter months (723 ± 134 CFU/m3). Respirable doses for children and staff were 2945 and 2441 CFU/day during winter and 5988 and 4964 CFU/day during autumn, respectively. Deposition doses incorporated from empirical models for regional deposition in the respiratory tract showed that children in kindergarten absorb 33% less of bacteria into alveolar region if breath by nose instead of mouth. Additionally, risk assessment results indicate that the hazard indices for children attending kindergartens for 3 years and for staff working 25 years are below 1, suggesting minor risks associated with the inhalation of bioaerosols during autumn and winter. HI was <1, so the non-carcinogenic effects are on an acceptable level, but the indoor/outdoor ratio were 3.5 and 2.4 for autumn and winter, respectively, indicating children's and adult's exposure to bacterial aerosol should be reduced.

Comparison of bioaerosol release characteristics between windrow and trough sludge composting plants: Concentration distribution, community evolution, bioaerosolization behaviour, and exposure risk

Windrow and trough composting are two mainstream composting methods, but the effect of composting methods on bioaerosol release from sludge composting plants is unclear. The study compared the bioaerosol release characteristics and exposure risks between the two composting methods. The results showed that the bacterial aerosol concentrations in the windrow composting plant ranged from 14,196 to 24,549 CFU/m3, while the fungal aerosol concentrations in the trough composting plant reached 5874 to 9284 CFU/m3; there were differences in the microbial community structures between the two sludge composting plants, and the composting method had a greater effect on bacterial community evolution than on fungal community evolution. The biochemical phase was the primary source of the bioaerosolization behaviour of the microbial bioaerosols. In the windrow and trough composting plants, the bacterial bioaerosolization index ranged from 1.00 to 999.28 and from 1.44 to 24.57, and the fungal bioaerosolization index ranged from 1.38 to 1.59 and from 0.34 to 7.72, respectively. Bacteria preferentially aerosolized mainly in the mesophilic stage, while the peak of the fungal bioaerosolization index appeared in the thermophilic stage. The total non-carcinogenic risks for bacterial aerosols were 3.4 and 2.4, while those for fungi were 1.0 and 3.2 in the trough and windrow sludge composting plants, respectively. Respiration is the main exposure pathway for bioaerosols. It is necessary to develop different bioaerosol protection measures for different sludge composting methods. The results of this study provided basic data and theoretical guidance for reducing the potential risk of bioaerosols in sludge composting plants.

Spatial distribution of airborne bacterial communities in caged poultry houses

ABSTRACT Microbial aerosols in intensive broiler houses whose species and concentrations are closely related to human health are ubiquitous. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing, the aim of this study was to investigate the spatial distribution and diversity of bacterial aerosols in the air of broiler houses. Significant spatial variations in airborne bacterial concentrations were observed inside the poultry farmhouse. The results indicated that bacteria in the air samples could be grouped into a total of 1,674 OTUs. Alpha diversity analysis showed that the diversity of the microbial community at the entry of the broiler house was higher than that at the middle or the rear (p < 0.01). The Sankey diagram illustrated species dynamic changes in Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria among the different locations. From the aspect of LEfSe (LDA Effect Size) analysis, we discovered that the abundance of Planctomycetes was significantly higher in the entry than in the rear and middle. This study shows the spatial distribution of the entire bacterial community in intensive broiler houses, which offers a new perspective for studying airborne total bacteria in those environments. Implications: The bacteria contained in air aerosols from poultry houses are closely connected to animal health and production. This study aimed to investigate the spatial distribution and diversity of bacterial aerosols in the air of broiler houses. The results observed that bacterial aerosol concentrations in the examined broilers house varied greatly at different positions, and a significantly higher exposure to bacterial aerosol was observed at the middle than at the other positions (p < 0.05). The microbial communities in genus level in the samples of entry and rear were closer, while the species diversity of middle and rear samples in chicken house was highly similar (P>0.05). Altogether, results revealed that the effects of spatial factors on the diversity and abundance of bacteria in the air of closed-cage broiler houses, which poses a potential threat to the health of animals and workers in those environments.

Assessment of Bacterial Aerosols in a Herbal Processing Plant

The aim of this study was to assess bacterial aerosols in a herbal processing plant in Poland. Bioaerosol measurements of indoor and outdoor air of the herbal processing plant were performed in four measurement rounds, in a seasonal cycle—in spring, summer, autumn, and winter—using a six-stage Andersen’s cascade air sampler. At each measuring point, during the bioaerosol sampling, the values of relative humidity and air temperature were simultaneously measured using the Kestrel 4000 device, and the concentration of particulate matter (fractions 1.0 μm, 2.5 μm, 4.0 µm, and 10.0 µm) using a DustTrak II dust analyzer. The results showed that the production process affects the bacterial aerosol concentrations in the tested plant. There were statistically significant differences in the concentrations of bacterial aerosol between indoor and outdoor air, and between production rooms, taking into account the seasons of the year. The concentrations of bacterial aerosol in the production rooms did not exceed 7.6 ×·103 cfu·m−3 and were lower than the permissible concentration values proposed for production rooms contaminated with organic dust. The calculations showed a significant correlation between the concentration of bacterial aerosol and air temperature. Qualitative analysis of microorganisms isolated from the air of production rooms showed the dominance of Gram-positive cocci of the genus Micrococcus and spore-forming rods of the Bacillus genus. The study confirmed that herbal processing plants may be related to exposure to microbiological agents.

Number size distribution of bacterial aerosols in terrestrial and marine airflows at a coastal site of Japan

Size-differentiated concentration of bacterial aerosols is essential for investigating their dissemination via the atmosphere. In this study, the number size distribution of bacterial aerosols was measured at a coastal site in southwestern Japan (32.324°N, 129.993°E) using a size-segregated eight-stage (>11, 7.0–11, 4.7–7.0, 3.3–4.7, 2.1–3.3, 1.1–2.1, 0.65–1.1, and 0.43–0.65μm) sampler. The results showed that the distribution differed according to the source areas: terrestrial air, oceanic air, or a combination of the two. The distribution in the long-distance transported terrestrial air from the Asian continent was monomodal, with a peak of 3.3–4.7 μm. The distribution in local land breeze air was bimodal, with the peaks at 0.43–1.1 and 3.3–4.7 μm. A similar bimodal distribution was encountered when the local island air and long-distance transported terrestrial air mixed. In contrast, the size distribution did not show clear peaks in the air from either nearby or remote marine areas. According to the air mass backward trajectories, the further the distance the air moved in the 72 h before arriving at the site, the lower the concentration of total bacterial aerosols. The estimation of dry deposition fluxes of bacterial cells showed that the deposition was dominated by cells larger than 1.1 μm with a relative contribution from 70.5 % to 93.7 %, except for the local land breeze cases, where the contributions in the size ranges larger and smaller than 1.1 μm were similar. These results show the distinctive number size distributions and removal processes of bacterial aerosols in different types of air. In addition, they indicate that size-dependent characteristics of airborne bacteria should be considered when studying their activities and roles in the atmospheric environment.

Distribution characteristics and potential risks of bacterial aerosol in waste transfer station

The waste transfer station (WTS) is an important link in the transfer of municipal solid waste (MSW) between the community and disposal terminals. While WTSs facilitate waste collection in communities, odorous gases and bioaerosols can escape from them, thereby negatively affecting their surroundings. In this study, the concentration, particle size distribution, pathogen population, and health risks of bioaerosols were analyzed at different locations in a transfer station. The results showed that the highest viable bacterial aerosol concentration was 10,353 ± 3701 CFU/m3, which was at 5 m from the disposal site. Fifty-three bacterial species, including pathogens, were detected. Of these, 39 were human pathogenic bacteria directly originating from the WTS. Furthermore, health risk assessments indicated unacceptable levels of non-carcinogenic risk for operational workers caused by bacterial aerosols of the WTS work area. In addition, bacterial aerosols may pose a severe health risk to children within a 15 m area of the WTS. The results of this study provide a scientific basis to control and reduce the risk associated with bioaerosol exposure in solid WTSs.

Seasonal dynamics in bacterial communities of closed-cage broiler houses.

The bacteria contained in air aerosols from poultry houses are closely connected to animal health and production. This study aimed to investigate the seasonal factors on microbial aerosol concentration, particle size and bacterial spectrum composition inside a closed-cage broiler house. Then, 16S rDNA sequencing technology was applied to analyze the characteristics of bacterial abundance and diversity. The results indicated that the concentration of bacterial aerosol in the broiler house varied significantly in different seasons, with a concentration range of 5.87-15.77 × 103 CFU/m3, and the highest and lowest concentrations in the summer and winter, respectively. Microbiological analysis showed that the proportion of Gram-negative bacteria in autumn was significantly higher than that in summer (P < 0.05). In addition, the floral structure of potential pathogenic bacterial genera also differed by season. Escherichia-Shigella, Streptococcus, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas were identified in the bacterial aerosols. Importantly, the relative abundance of Firmicutes in spring and autumn was much higher. In contrast, the relative abundance of Proteobacteria in spring and autumn was lower than that in summer and winter. Altogether, results revealed the effects of seasonal factors on the diversity and abundance of bacteria and the distribution characteristics of major opportunistic pathogens in the air of closed-cage broiler houses. These results will provide important information for exploring the potential risk of aerosols from poultry houses all four seasons.

The Distribution Characteristics of Aerosol Bacteria in Different Types of Pig Houses

Simple SummaryMicrobial aerosols from pig houses can be released into the environment, posing a serious threat to biosafety and public health. At present, there are few studies on the structural characteristics of aerosol bacteria in piggeries at different growth stages. It is important to understand the characteristics of aerosol bacteria in pig houses to solve the problems of air pollution and disease control in pig houses at different growth stages. In this study, bacterial aerosol concentrations and bacterial communities were compared in pig houses at different growth stages in Hebei Province, China. It was found that bacterial concentrations, community richness, and diversity in the air increased with the age of pigs. There are many pathogenic bacteria in the microbial aerosols of piggery. Our study highlights the importance of more comprehensive research and analysis of microbial aerosols in pig houses. Precautions for air pollution should be instituted in pig houses, including wearing masks, rigorous disinfection, and hygiene procedures.With the development of modern pig raising technology, the increasing density of animals in pig houses leads to the accumulation of microbial aerosols in pig houses. It is an important prerequisite to grasp the characteristics of bacteria in aerosols in different pig houses to solve the problems of air pollution and disease prevention and control in different pig houses. This work investigated the effects of growth stages on bacterial aerosol concentrations and bacterial communities in pig houses. Three traditional types of closed pig houses were studied: farrowing (FAR) houses, weaning (WEA) houses, and fattening (FAT) houses. The Andersen six-stage sampler and high-volume air sampler were used to assess the concentrations and size distribution of airborne bacteria, and 16S rRNA gene sequencing was used to identify the bacterial communities. We found that the airborne bacterial concentration, community richness, and diversity index increased with pig age. We found that Acinetobacter, Erysipelothrix, Streptococcus, Moraxella, and Aerococcus in the microbial aerosols of pig houses have the potential risk of causing disease. These differences lead us to believe that disinfection strategies for pig houses should involve a situational focus on environmental aerosol composition on a case-by-case basis.

Bacterial aerosol, particulate matter, and microclimatic parameters in the horse stables in Poland

Keeping horses in good condition requires providing them with living conditions that meet welfare requirements. These animals should be accommodated with suitable space, access to high nutritional fodder and water, and a suitable microclimate in their shelters. When it comes to the environment in the stables, a serious problem is created by particulate matter (PM), which consists of bacteria. PM concentration may be responsible for developing multiple lower respiratory tract diseases in horses, including allergies and recurrent airway obstruction (RAO). In turn, these ailments may lead to decreasing equine physical and mental fitness. Additionally, people who spend time in the stables are exposed to the same harmful factors. The study was conducted in Udórz Stud Farm located in the southern region of Poland. The study was carried out in 2 different types of stables: 3 runners (a type of stable where horses are housed together and occasionally linked up, e.g., for feeding or grooming) and 2 box stables. The research continued for 2 years and the samples were collected in each season. The bioaerosol samples were collected using a six-stage Andersen-Graseby cascade impactor to assess size distribution and concentrations of airborne bacteria. PM concentration was analyzed using the DustTrak™ II Aerosol Monitor 8530, while microclimate parameters were measured using the Kestrel 5000 Weather Meter. There are almost no studies concerning size distribution of airborne bacteria, individual PM fractions, and the impact of everyday handling on the changes in the bioaerosol and PM concentration. This preliminary study provided basic information on this subject. We have revealed a strong correlation between high PM and bacterial aerosol concentrations. Higher contamination levels were recorded in runners, as compared to box stables. The highest bacterial aerosol level was detected in the spring. The analysis of the fractions of the bacterial aerosol in the stables indicated the highest share of ultra-fine fraction (0.65–2.1 µm), while respirable fraction (below 4.7 µm) exceeded 75%. It was established that the concentration of the bacterial aerosol inside the stables was many times higher than outside. It depended significantly on everyday activities undertaken in the stables, like feeding or cleaning. Taking the above into account, a different cleaning system should be developed (a wet cleaning system, with the use of water) and excrement should be removed more frequently.

Fully integrated optofluidic SERS platform for real-time and continuous characterization of airborne microorganisms

An optofluidic, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) platform was developed to detect airborne microorganisms, continuously and in real time. The platform consists of an on-chip analysis system integrated with an aerosol sampler and Raman spectrometer. A stratified two-phase flow, consisting of the sampled air stream and a stream of collection medium, is formed in the curved channel. The inertia of collected particles, such as bacterial cells, carries them across the phase boundary in the curved channel such that they impact the liquid stream directly. The collection efficiency of the microchannel was evaluated using different-sized standard polystyrene-latex particles. A collection efficiency of 99.6% was attained for particles with an average aerodynamic diameter of 1 μm, a typical size for bacterial aerosols, by optimizing the flow rates of the sample air and liquid medium. A silver colloid in the collection medium was used as the SERS adsorbent. After passing through a serpentine mixing channel, bacterial particles were detected by SERS in real time using the custom Raman spectroscopy system. The detection system was evaluated with five test bacteria: S. epidermidis, M. luteus, E. hirae, B. subtilis, and E. coli. The concentration of airborne S. epidermidis corresponded to a Raman peak at 732.5 cm−1. The limit of detection was approximately 102 CFU/mL and the total bacterial aerosol concentration was determined in real time based on the ratio of sampling air to SERS colloid.

Microbiological Air Quality in a Highschool Gym Located in an Urban Area of Southern Poland—Preliminary Research

The benefits of regular exercise include improved physical and mental health. The school gym is a particular micro-environment where students perform intensive physical training. The question is if there is an increased risk of microbiological contamination. This preliminary work studied the exposure of students to bacterial aerosol (BA) in a highschool gym located in an urban area of Southern Poland. A sampling of BA was undertaken with an Andersen six-stage impactor (ANDI). BA was identified using API (analytical profile index) tests. The BA concentrations were expressed as Colony Forming Units (CFU) per cubic metre of air. The results showed that before gym classes (BGC), the concentration of BA was 4.20 × 102 ± 49.19 CFU/m3, while during gym classes (DGC), the level of BA more than doubled (8.75 × 102 ± 121.39 CFU/m3). There was also an increase in the respirable fraction of BA (particles less than 3.3 µm). Before the start of the sports activities, respirable fraction accounted for 30% of the BA, while during physical education classes, this share increased to over 80%. Identification of BA species showed that the dominant group of bacteria in the indoor air of the gym BGC was Gram-positive rods (61%) and for DGC it was Gram-positive cocci (81%). We detected that one bacteria strain (Corynebacterium striatum) was classified into risk group 2 (RG2) according to Directive 2000/54/EC. Additionally, multi-antibiotic resistance (MAR) showed that among the isolated airborne bacteria, the highest antibiotic resistance was demonstrated by Staphylococcus epidermis (isolated DGC) and Pseudomonas sp. (isolated BGC). The quantitative and qualitative information on microbiological air quality (MIAQ) in the school gym indicates that the actions to improve indoor physical activity spaces are recommended.

Characterization, pro-inflammatory response and cytotoxic profile of bioaerosols from urban and rural residential settings in Pune, India

Microbiota associated with airborne particulate matter (PM) is an important indicator of indoor pollution as they can be pathogenic and cause serious health threats to the exposed occupants. Present study aimed to investigate the level of culturable microbes associated with PM and their toxicological characterization in urban and rural houses of Pune city. Highest concentration of bacterial aerosols observed to be associated with PM10 size fraction in urban site (2136 ± 285 CFU/m3) whereas maximum fungal concentration has been measured in rural houses (1521 ± 302 CFU/m3). Predominantly found bacterial species were Bacillus sp., S. aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and fungal species were Aspergillus sp., Cladosporium sp., and Penicillium sp. in both urban and rural residential premises. Concentration of endotoxin measured using the kinetic Limulus Amebocyte Lysate assay exhibited that the level of endotoxin in both urban and rural sites are associated with household characteristics and the activities performed in indoor as well as outdoor. Cell free DTT assay confirmed the ability of these airborne microbes to induce the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) varying along with the types of microorganisms. On exposure of A549 cells to airborne microbes, a significant decrease in cell viability was observed in terms of both necrosis and apoptosis pathway. Elevated production of nitric oxide (NO) and proinflammatory cytokines in epithelial cells and macrophages clearly suggest the inflammatory nature of these airborne microbes. Results derived from the present study demonstrated that the indoor air of urban and rural houses of Pune is contaminated in terms of microbial load. Therefore, attention should be paid to control the factors favoring the microbial growth in order to safeguard the health of exposed inhabitants.

Concentration and size distribution of microbial aerosol in the historical objects in Krak\xf3w as a potential health risk and biodeterioration factor

Historical facilities such as churches, crypts, libraries and museums are crucial for preserving cultural heritage but at the same time, they are frequently visited tourist objects and working environment. The aim of this study was to assess whether there are differences in the concentration and size distribution of bacterial and fungal aerosol in the mentioned groups of historical objects in Kraków, as well as to determine if there is tendency for seasonal fluctuations of bioaerosol concentrations, and what environmental parameters affect them most significantly. The concentrations of bacterial and fungal aerosol were measured in ten historical objects—churches, crypts, libraries and museums—using a six-stage Andersen impactor. Microbiological analyses were accompanied by measurements of particulate matter (PM10, PM4, PM2.5 and PM1) and microclimatic parameters. The results showed that the studied objects differ in terms of bioaerosol levels, but the differences were not drastic and in terms of bacterial aerosol concentrations the objects can be arranged as follows: churches > libraries > museums > crypts, while for fungal aerosol the order would be: churches > museums > crypts > libraries. The concentrations of bioaerosol did not exceed the safety levels for human exposure, but the levels suggesting possible threat of biodeterioration and the presence of internal source of contamination were exceeded in nearly all sites. The share of respirable fraction of bioaerosol was high (42.1–90.5% for bacteria and 80.7–94.7% for fungi). Bioaerosol concentration was most significantly associated with indoor temperature, and the impact of particulate matter was only moderate.

Microbial contamination level and microbial diversity of occupational environment in commercial and traditional dairy plants.

The aim of this study was to assess microbial contamination of the air and surfaces at workplaces in commercial (CD) and traditional (TD) dairies. Bioaerosol (impactor) and surface (swab) samples were collected in CD and in TD. Bacterial and fungal concentrations in the air and on surfaces were calculated and all isolated microorganisms taxonomically identified, based on their morphological, biochemical and molecular features. Average concentrations of bacterial aerosol ranged between 70-860 CFU/m3 and 265-14639 CFU/m3, while for fungal aerosol were between 50-290 CFU/m3 and 55-480 CFU/m3 in CD and TD, respectively. Average bacterial concentrations on surfaces ranged between 1.0-49.7 CFU/cm2 and 0.2-60.4 CFU/cm2, whereas average fungal surface contamination ranged between 0-2.7 CFU/cm2 and 0-4.6 CFU/cm2 in CD and TD, respectively. Qualitative analysis revealed mainly the presence of saprophytic microorganisms; however, several pathogenic strains (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus intermedius, Clostridium perfringens, Actinomyces spp., Streptomyces spp., Candida albicans) were also isolated from both the air and surface samples in the studied dairies. The air and surfaces in TD were more polluted than those in CD; however, in both types of dairies, the levels of microbial contaminants did not exceed respective threshold limit values. Nevertheless, the presence of pathogenic microorganisms may increase health risk for dairy workers and influence the quality of products. Hence, proper hygienic measures should be introduced and performed to guarantee high microbial quality of both production processes and milk products.

Bioaerosols in the waterpipe cafés: genera, levels, and factors influencing their concentrations.

This study was conducted in order to assess the exposure to bacterial and fungal bioaerosols in the air of waterpipe cafés (AWPCs), in the hose of waterpipe (HWP), and in the water bowl of the waterpipe (WBWP) and to investigate the factors influence increasing the contamination levels in waterpipe cafés in Ardabil. From all the 50 cafés studied, the samples were taken from air and from water contained in water bowl and hose for bacterial and fungal analyses. The results demonstrated that the mean numbers of bacteria and fungi in the indoor air of café, hose, and water bowl were 33.90 ± 14.86 and 25.24 ± 1.99CFU/m3, 72.16 ± 29.55 and 72.78 ± 42.45CFU/plate, 53.7 ± 25.46 and 25.26 ± 13.94CFU/ml, respectively. The predominant bacterial genera in waterpipe cafés were Pseudomonas and Bacillus in air, Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas in the hose, and Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas in the water bowl, respectively. The predominant fungal species in waterpipe cafés were Penicillium and Cladosporium in air, yeast and Fusarium in the hose, and Paecilomyces and yeast in the water bowl, respectively. The results of statistical analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between the mean concentrations of bacterial aerosol and qualitative variables such as type of heating system, materials of wall and ceiling, traditional restaurants, interior supermarkets, moisturized walls, the number of people, area of cafés, and temperature. But there was no significant relationship between these variables and the mean concentration of fungal aerosols. The results also showed that the levels of bioaerosols were high in the air, hose, and water bowl of the waterpipe. Therefore, cafés can be a potential source for the transmission of pathogenic agents and increase the risk of respiratory diseases among waterpipe smoking individuals.

Analyses of Aerosol Concentrations and Bacterial Community Structures for Closed Cage Broiler Houses at Different Broiler Growth Stages in Winter

The aim of the present study was to analyze the aerosol concentrations and microbial community structures in closed cage broiler houses at different broiler growth stages to assess the dynamic pattern of microbial aerosols in closed cage systems. Our results revealed that the total concentration of bacterial aerosols gradually increased during the growth cycle of broilers. High-throughput sequencing of 16S rDNA revealed that microbial compositions differed tremendously during different growth stages, although Firmicutes and Proteobacteria were the dominant taxa in samples from all broiler growth stages. At the genus level, dominant phylotypes displayed great variation during different growth stages. Escherichia and Shigella were the most dominant taxa throughout the growth cycle, increasing from 4.3 to 12.4% as the broilers grew. The alpha index revealed that the microbial diversity displayed significant differences between the different growth stages and that the bacterial community had the highest diversity when broilers were 22 days old. High-throughput sequencing analyses revealed that environmental microbes and opportunistic pathogens had relatively high abundances during the winter growth period. The data revealed the composition and aerodynamic diameters of microbial aerosols in closed cage broiler houses at different broiler growth stages in winter. The results also enabled us to elucidate the dynamic pattern of microbial aerosols in broiler houses in response to bacterial communities. Our results may provide a basis for developing technologies for air quality control in caged poultry houses.

Microbiological indoor air quality in an office building in Gliwice, Poland: analysis of the case study

Bioaerosols play a significant role in indoor air quality (IAQ) as they can be the cause of several health problems, including acute allergies and infectious diseases. This study aimed to characterize and compare the microbial air quality of air-conditioned (AC) and naturally ventilated (NV) office rooms in the Upper Silesia region of Poland. The bacterial samples were collected during the late spring season. Culturable bacteria were deposited on the nutrient media on Petri dishes to investigate the viable-culturable count (VCC) of bacteria and bacterial community structure using a Biolog GEN III system. In total, 12 species of bacteria were identified, with the most isolated Macrococcus equipercicus, Micrococcus luteus D, Staphylococcus xylosus (indoor), and Bacillus species (outdoor). The indoor mean concentrations of bacterial aerosol ranged from 102 to 103 CFU m−3, below Polish proposals for threshold limit standards in office buildings. The indoor-to-outdoor (I/O) ratios indicated that studied air pollutants in the office rooms originated from the indoor air. These results, together with community composition of bacteria, indicate that most of the bacteria present in the studied office building were relatively fresh and of human origin. Multi-antibiotic resistance (MAR) tests showed that the most antibiotic-resistant features were present in Macrococcus species. The office building exposure dose (OBED) and mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) of bacteria aerosol were estimated. The highest value of OBED over the study period was obtained for staff working in offices with natural ventilation (141 CFU kg−1), in contrast to the value for staff working in offices equipped with air conditioning (about 100 CFU kg−1). The MMAD of viable airborne bacteria was higher in AC offices (2.4 μm) than in NV offices (2.2 μm).

Assessment of Bacterial Aerosol in a Preschool, Primary School and High School in Poland

The issue of healthy educational buildings is a global concern because children are particularly at risk of lung damage and infection caused by poor indoor air quality (IAQ). This article presents the results of a preliminary study of the concentration and size distribution of bacterial aerosol in three educational buildings: a preschool, primary school, and high school. Sampling was undertaken in the classrooms with an Andersen six-stage impactor (with aerodynamic cut-off diameters of 7.0, 4.7, 3.3, 2.1, 1.1 and 0.65 μm) during spring 2016 and 2017, as well as the outside of the buildings. After incubation, bioaerosol particles captured on nutrient media on Petri dishes were quantitatively evaluated and qualitatively identified. The highest average concentration of bacterial aerosol was inside the primary school building (2205 CFU/m3), whereas the lowest average concentration of indoor culturable bacteria was observed in the high school building (391 CFU/m3). Using the obtained data, the exposure dose (ED) of the bacterial aerosol was estimated for children attending each educational level. The most frequently occurring species in the sampled bacterial aerosol were Gram-positive cocci in the indoor environment and Gram-positive rod-forming endospores in the outdoor environment.
