Source variations of atmospheric particles in response to control measures in northern China during 2022 winter olympics and paralympics: Evidence from microscopic analysis.

The physicochemical properties of atmospheric particles including morphologies and composition are directly related to their sources and formation mechanisms. However, most previous studies have been limited to a few sites and small numbers of particles. In this study, we employed computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy (CCSEM) to enhance measurement efficiency and enable long-term observations across multiple sites. To investigate properties and source variations of atmospheric particles in response to control measures before, during, and after the 2022 Winter Olympic Games (WOG) and Winter Paralympic Games (WPG), ambient particles were passively collected in 15 northern Chinese cities and automatically analyzed by an advanced CCSEM (IntelliSEM EPAS). Variations in particle numbers (PN), size distribution, elemental composition, and sources were comprehensively analyzed. Over one million particles were classified into mineral, carbonaceous, fly ash, sulfur-related, metal-containing, salt, and biological particles using the user-defined classification rules. The results showed that improved air quality was witnessed during the WOG with reduced PN and anthropogenic particles, but deteriorated during the WPG due to increased coarse-mode PN, mineral, and sulfur-related particles. Beijing and Zhangjiakou exhibited lower AQI, PN, and anthropogenic particles, while non-competition cities experienced higher levels of anthropogenic and sulfur-related particles. Notably, Taiyuan and Shijiazhuang showed distinct emission reductions during the WOG, while Baoding and Tangshan demonstrated less effective control with high levels of sulfur-related and anthropogenic Fe-rich particles. This study shows the capability of CCSEM to provide microscopic evidence of particle sources and behaviors, offering valuable insights into the efficacy of control measures during major events.

Comparative experimental study of ash formation behaviors during the fixed-bed gasification of coal water slurry and dry pulverized coal prepared from Shenmu coal

The mechanism of ash formation during coal gasification is very important for the safety and stability of gasifier operation. This study comparatively investigated the ash formation behaviors during the gasification of coal water slurry and dry pulverized coal. Shenmu coal was gasified in a CO2 atmosphere at 900 °C using a fixed-bed reactor to prepare chars and ashes. Computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy was employed to characterize the compositions and particle sizes of minerals in the raw coal, coal water slurry gasification ash, and dry pulverized coal gasification ash. Morphological characteristics reveal that, during gasification, coal water slurry gasification char exhibits obvious agglomeration compared to the dry pulverized coal gasification char. The changes of mineral compositions indicate that, during both coal water slurry and dry pulverized coal gasification, minerals follow nearly identical transformation pathways, but the degrees of transformation are different. The influence of char agglomeration on heat transfer may be the reason for the less transformation of K Al-silicate and kaolinite during the coal water slurry gasification. Furthermore, in comparison to dry pulverized coal gasification, more Ca in calcite and S in pyrite transfer into gypsum during the coal water slurry gasification. The results from thermodynamic equilibrium calculations indirectly suggest that this may be attributed to the limited internal diffusion of CO2 within coal water slurry gasification char resulting from char agglomeration during gasification. Overall particle size distributions of minerals in raw coal, coal water slurry gasification ash, and dry pulverized coal gasification ash demonstrate that the degrees of mineral fragmentation are almost consistent during both coal water slurry and dry pulverized coal gasification. However, differences in the degrees of mineral transformation led to different particle size distributions of various minerals between coal water slurry gasification ash and dry pulverized coal gasification ash. This study mainly focuses on the influence of water in coal water slurry on ash formation, and it has not considered the influence of other factors, such as ash content, hydrophilicity, caking property, and gasification reactivity of coal, which need further research to explore.

Identification of Airborne Particle Types and Sources at a California School Using Electron Microscopy

We conducted a pilot study to investigate air quality indoors in two classrooms and outdoors on the school grounds in a California community with historically high PM2.5 (fine particulate matter, diameter < 2.5 μm). We used computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy of passive samples to identify major PM types, which were used to help interpret continuous PM2.5 and black carbon sensor data. The five major PM types were sodium salt particles with sulfur, calcium, or chlorine; aluminosilicate dusts; carbonaceous combustion agglomerates; biogenic particles; and metal-rich particles. Based on morphological evidence of water droplets, the salt particles are hypothesized to be secondary aerosols formed via the reaction of sodium chloride fog droplets with sulfur from regional sources. The carbonaceous agglomerates had unusual morphologies consistent with low-temperature combustion and smoke from open-burning activities observed nearby. The passive PM sampler and continuous sensor results indicated lower concentrations in the classroom equipped with an air cleaner. Passive samples collected in one classroom exhibited enhanced PM10–2.5 crustal particles and PM2.5 metal particles, suggesting a potential local PM source in that room. Future study designs that enable longer passive sampling times would reduce detection limits and sample contamination concerns. The determination of major airborne particle types in a given environment makes this technique a useful and unique community exposure assessment tool, even in these limited-duration (48 h) deployments.

Cloud condensation nuclei activity of internally mixed particle populations at a remote marine free troposphere site in the North Atlantic Ocean

This study reports results from research conducted at the Observatory of Mount Pico (OMP), 2225 m above mean sea level on Pico Island in the Azores archipelago in June and July 2017. We investigated the chemical composition, mixing state, and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) activities of long-range transported free tropospheric (FT) particles. FLEXible PARTicle Lagrangian particle dispersion model (FLEXPART) simulations reveal that most air masses that arrived at the OMP during the sampling period originated in North America and were highly aged (average plume age > 10 days). We probed size-resolved chemical composition, mixing state, and hygroscopicity parameter (κ) of individual particles using computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (CCSEM-EDX). Based on the estimated individual particle mass from elemental composition, we calculated the mixing state index, χ. During our study, FT particle populations were internally mixed (χ of samples are between 53 % and 87 %), owing to the long atmospheric aging time. We used data from a miniature Cloud Condensation Nucleus Counter (miniCCNC) to derive the hygroscopicity parameter, κCCNC. Combining κCCNC and FLEXPART, we found that air masses recirculated above the North Atlantic Ocean with lower mean altitude had higher κCCNC due to the higher contribution of sea salt particles. We used CCSEM-EDX and phase state measurements to predict single-particle κ (κCCSEM-EDX) values, which overlap with the lower range of κCCNC measured below 0.15 % SS. Therefore, CCSEM-EDX measurements can be useful in predicting the lower bound of κ, which can be used in climate models to predict CCN activities, especially in remote locations where online CCN measurements are unavailable.

Effects of co-combustion Fe-rich mediocre ash coal on slag deposition of Ca-rich Zhundong coal in a 0.4 MW pilot-scale facility

A type of coal with low calorific value and high ash content, locally known as mediocre ash coal (MAC), has been discovered in the interlayer of stratified coals in Jiang Jun Temple area Zhundong district, Xinjiang, China. In order to investigate slag deposition on the convective heating surface during co-combustion of MAC and Wucaiwan Ca-rich Zhundong Coal (WCW), a 0.4 MW pilot-scale facility, with tube panels #1 and #2 located in horizontal flue gas ducts, was constructed. The tube panels were designed to simulate the superheater and reheater of the Π-type boiler. FactSage was utilized to simulate the material balance, whereas the classic models were employed to calculate the slag viscosity. Combustion tests were conducted while maintaining flue gas temperatures (FGT) of 1050∼1100 °C and 900∼950 °C at tube panels #1 and #2, respectively, which were consistent with those observed during sole combustion of WCW. The slags collected from tube panels were analyzed by X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with Energy Dispersive X-ray Detector. Furthermore, Computer-Controlled Scanning Electron Microscopy analysis was used to obtain a quantitative characterization of the symbiotic relationship among mineral elements. The study of co-combustion MAC led to the following conclusions: The liquid phase ratio of slag decreased by 44% compared to sole combustion of WCW at 1100 °C. The viscosity was higher than that of sole combustion of WCW from 900 to 1650 °C. Compared to the sole combustion of WCW, the average S, Ca, and Na contents in the slag obtained on the two tube panels decreased by more than 85%, 40%, and 43.5% respectively. Sulfate formation in the slag on the tube panel was significantly reduced at medium to low FGT, and no Na2SO4 and CaSO4 compounds could be detected in the slag. The interaction between Fe-bearing minerals and Si- and Al-bearing minerals during combustion was evidently stronger than that between Ca-bearing minerals and Si- and Al-bearing minerals during combustion. The interaction of Fe with Ca/Na during medium to high FGTs led to a decrease in Si/ Al consumption, thereby increasing their availability for reacting with Ca/Na at medium to low FGTs. As a result, the formation of Na2SO4 and CaSO4 was inhibited.

Stratospheric ozone depletion in the Antarctic region triggers intense changes in sea salt aerosol geochemistry

Since the early 1980s, the Antarctic environment has served as a natural field laboratory for researchers to investigate the effects of stratospheric ozone depletion, which has resulted in increased surface ultraviolet radiation levels. However, its effective threats still present gaps. We report new pieces of evidence of increased ultraviolet radiation impacting West Antarctica sea salt aerosols. Salt aerosols, particularly in the Southern Ocean Sea, play an important role in the radiative earth balance. To disclose the molecular details of sea salt aerosols, we used a synchrotron-based multi-element microscopic speciation of individual microparticles (Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy with Near-Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure Spectroscopy combined with Computer-Controlled Scanning Electron Microscopy). Here we identified substantial abundances of chlorine-enriched aerosols in sea salt generated by photolytic products, whereas ice core records revealed increased chlorine depletion from the onset of ozone depletion. Our findings reveal that modern sea salt modification has no Holocene precedent.

Effects of torrefaction on ash-related issues during biomass combustion and co-combustion with coal. Part 3: Ash slagging behavior

Torrefaction is a competitive technology for biomass upgrading. Knowing that the effects of torrefaction on ash-related issues during biomass combustion and co-combustion with coal have been less investigated, Parts Ⅰ and Ⅱ of this work investigated the particulate matter emission and ash fouling behavior. To be a continuation, in the present paper, the effect of biomass torrefaction on ash slagging deposition which occurs in the high-temperature areas of the furnace was focused on. Two herbaceous biomass, one woody biomass, and their torrefied chars were fired and co-fired with two coals respectively on a drop-tube furnace at 1300℃. The slags were collected from mullite tubes placed in the furnace for quantification and characterization. Computer-controlled scanning electron microscope (CCSEM) was employed to obtain the distribution of particle size and inorganic species in the bulk ash. The results indicate that co-firing the biomass with high-Ca coal significantly reduces the ash slagging rates due to the substitution of alkalis by Ca from the silicates/aluminosilicates which inhibits the agglomeration and sintering of the ash particles, and finally reduces the inertial impaction and capture of the particles on the tube. Co-firing corn stalk with the high-Si/Al coal promotes the formation of alkaline aluminosilicates which are sticky at a high temperature. Therefore, the slagging tendency is exacerbated. Torrefaction reduces the ash slagging rate of sawdust resulting from the effective removal of S and Cl and the transformation of AAEMs (alkaline and alkaline earth metals) into less-reactive forms during torrefaction which reduces the vaporization and transformation of AAEMs into coarse particles as aluminosilicates by surface reactions. However, the ash slagging rates are increased by torrefaction for other fuels due to more retention of AAEMs after torrefaction resulting in more mixed silicates or aluminosilicates in bulk ash contributing to the growth of slagging deposits during combustion. Measures are suggested to be taken, such as optimizing the operation conditions, co-firing with high-Ca coals, using additives, etc. to alleviate the ash slagging during torrefied herbaceous biomass combustion.

Source identification and apportionment of ambient particulate matter in Beijing using an advanced computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy (CCSEM) system

The use of electron microscopy to analyze the morphology, composition, and sources of atmospheric particles has been studied extensively worldwide. However, in China, there are few studies on single-particle source analysis based on computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy (CCSEM) technology for a large number of particles, and the related technical methods need to be established and improved. In this study, ambient particulate matter (PM) was collected simultaneously from urban, suburban, and background areas of Beijing in spring 2018 and subsequently characterized using the IntelliSEM-EPAS™ technology (an advanced CCSEM software). The deposition velocity model was used to deduce the size distribution and calculate the concentration of ambient PM. Based on the k-means algorithm and empirical rules, all particles investigated were quantitatively apportioned to nine major sources, including soil/road dust, carbonates-silicates, carbonates, irregular carbonaceous particles, irregular iron oxides, combustion/industry, calcium sulfate, secondary particles, and salt-related particles. The size-resolved contributions (mass and number) of different sources were calculated. For example, soil/road dust (65.1 %), carbonate-silicate (16.1 %), and carbonate (7.1 %) were the top three sources contributing to PM10 mass. This study was the first localized application of IntelliSEM-EPAS technology in China, demonstrating its great promise in PM source apportionment. For further accurate and refined source apportionment, it is essential to build localized individual particle source profiles.

An improved model of fine particulate matter formation coupling the mechanism of mineral coalescence and char fragmentation during pulverized coal combustion

An improved model of fine particulate matter formation coupling the mechanism of mineral coalescence and char fragmentation under different pulverized coal combustion environments has been constructed. Firstly, based on the theoretical model of char fragmentation and percolation, the included minerals with different types and particle sizes are constructed in the model, and a three-dimensional char particle sub-model is established. And the type, content and particle size distribution of included minerals are introduced as input parameters by using computer controlled scanning electron microscopy (CCSEM) technology. All of the above makes it more in line with the actual distribution of the included minerals. Then a sub-model of char fragmentation is built based on the sub-model of the char particle. And considering the influence of char combustion reaction on the particle formation process and melting characteristics of included minerals, a sub-model of mineral melting coalescence under different combustion environments is established. Finally, based on this improved model, we compared the calculation results with the experimental data and the calculation results of the traditional model. Fully considering the process of mineral coalescence and char fragmentation, which contains the characteristics of different included minerals, the results show that the newly established model has a good fitting effect for the experiment and is closer to the actual process of char particle combustion to generate particles. By the new model, the influence of the factors (mineral content, particle size distribution and porosity) on the formation of particulate matter is preliminarily analyzed.

Probing Individual Particles Generated at the Freshwater-Seawater Interface through Combined Raman, Photothermal Infrared, and X-ray Spectroscopic Characterization.

Sea spray aerosol (SSA) is one of the largest global sources of atmospheric aerosol, but little is known about SSA generated in coastal regions with salinity gradients near estuaries and river outflows. SSA particles are chemically complex with substantial particle-to-particle variability due to changes in water temperature, salinity, and biological activity. In previous studies, the ability to resolve the aerosol composition to the level of individual particles has proven necessary for the accurate parameterization of the direct and indirect aerosol effects; therefore, measurements of individual SSA particles are needed for the characterization of this large source of atmospheric aerosol. An integrated analytical measurement approach is required to probe the chemical composition of individual SSA particles. By combining complementary vibrational microspectroscopic (Raman and optical photothermal infrared, O-PTIR) measurements with elemental information from computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (CCSEM-EDX), we gained unique insights into the individual particle chemical composition and morphology. Herein, we analyzed particles from four experiments on laboratory-based SSA production using coastal seawater collected in January 2018 from the Gulf of Maine. Individual salt particles were enriched in organics compared to that in natural seawater, both with and without added microalgal filtrate, with greater enrichment observed for smaller particle sizes, as evidenced by higher carbon/sodium ratios. Functional group analysis was carried out using the Raman and infrared spectra collected from individual SSA particles. Additionally, the Raman spectra were compared with a library of Raman spectra consisting of marine-derived organic compounds. Saccharides, followed by fatty acids, were the dominant components of the organic coatings surrounding the salt cores of these particles. This combined Raman, infrared, and X-ray spectroscopic approach will enable further understanding of the factors determining the individual particle composition, which is important for understanding the impacts of SSA produced within estuaries and river outflows, as well as areas of snow and ice melt.

Particle phase-state variability in the North Atlantic free troposphere during summertime is determined by atmospheric transport patterns and sources

Abstract. Free tropospheric aerosol particles have important but poorly constrained climate effects due to transformations of their physicochemical properties during long-range transport. In this study, we investigate the chemical composition and provide an overview of the phase states of individual particles that have undergone long-range transport over the North Atlantic Ocean in June and July 2014, 2015, and 2017 to the Observatory of Mount Pico (OMP) in the Azores. The OMP is an ideal site for studying long-range-transported free tropospheric particles because local emissions have a negligible influence and contributions from the boundary layer are rare. We used the FLEXible PARTicle Lagrangian particle dispersion model (FLEXPART) to determine the origins and transport trajectories of sampled air masses and found that most of them originated from North America and recirculated over the North Atlantic Ocean. The FLEXPART analysis showed that the sampled air masses were highly aged (average plume age >10 d). Size-resolved chemical compositions of individual particles were probed using computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (CCSEM-EDX) and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy with near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (STXM-NEXAFS). CCSEM-EDX results showed that the most abundant particle types were carbonaceous (∼ 29.9 % to 82.0 %), sea salt (∼ 0.3 % to 31.6 %), and sea salt with sulfate (∼ 2.4 % to 31.5 %). We used a tilted stage interfaced within an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) to determine the phase states of individual submicron particles. We found that most particles (∼ 47 % to 99 %) were in the liquid state at the time of collection due to inorganic inclusions. Moreover, we also observed substantial fractions of solid and semisolid particles (∼ 0 % to 30 % and ∼ 1 % to 42 %, respectively) during different transport patterns and events, reflecting the particles' phase-state variability for different atmospheric transport events and sources. Combining phase state measurements with FLEXPART CO tracer analysis, we found that wildfire-influenced plumes can result in particles with a wide range of viscosities after long-range transport in the free troposphere. We also used temperature and RH values extracted from the Global Forecast System (GFS) along the FLEXPART-simulated path to predict the phase state of the particles during transport and found that neglecting internal mixing with inorganics would lead to an overestimation of the viscosity of free tropospheric particles. Our findings warrant future investigation aiming at the quantitative assessment of the influence of internal mixing on the phase states of the individual particles. This study also provides insights into the chemical composition and phase state of free tropospheric particles, which can help models to reduce uncertainties about the effects of ambient aerosol particles on climate.

Micro-spectroscopic and freezing characterization of ice-nucleating particles collected in the marine boundary layer in the eastern North Atlantic

Abstract. Formation of atmospheric ice plays a crucial role in the microphysical evolution of mixed-phase and cirrus clouds and thus climate. How aerosol particles impact ice crystal formation by acting as ice-nucleating particles (INPs) is a subject of intense research activities. To improve understanding of atmospheric INPs, we examined daytime and nighttime particles collected during the Aerosol and Cloud Experiments in the Eastern North Atlantic (ACE-ENA) field campaign conducted in summer 2017. Collected particles, representative of a remote marine environment, were investigated for their propensity to serve as INPs in the immersion freezing (IMF) and deposition ice nucleation (DIN) modes. The particle population was characterized by chemical imaging techniques such as computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (CCSEM/EDX) and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy with near-edge X-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy (STXM/NEXAFS). Four major particle-type classes were identified where internally mixed inorganic–organic particles make up the majority of the analyzed particles. Following ice nucleation experiments, individual INPs were identified and characterized by SEM/EDX. The identified INP types belong to the major particle-type classes consisting of fresh sea salt with organics or processed sea salt containing dust and sulfur with organics. Ice nucleation experiments show IMF events at temperatures as low as 231 K, including the subsaturated regime. DIN events were observed at lower temperatures of 210 to 231 K. IMF and DIN observations were analyzed with regard to activated INP fraction, ice-nucleation active site (INAS) densities, and a water activity-based immersion freezing model (ABIFM) yielding heterogeneous ice nucleation rate coefficients. Observed IMF and DIN events of ice formation and corresponding derived freezing rates demonstrate that the marine boundary layer aerosol particles can serve as INPs under typical mixed-phase and cirrus cloud conditions. The derived IMF and DIN parameterizations allow for implementation in cloud and climate models to evaluate predictive effects of atmospheric ice crystal formation.

The Influence of Pore Distribution of Coal Char in the Char Fragmentation and Included Minerals Partitioning: A Percolation Modeling

The processes of char fragmentation, including mineral partitioning and particulate matter (PM) formation during dense and porous char combustion, were observed by a site percolation model. This model simulated the diffusion-controlled regime of char combustion, and the size distributions of included minerals in typical bituminous coal were determined by the computer-controlled scanning electron microscope (CCSEM), and the data were put into the char matrix randomly. The model presents the influence of initial pore distribution on char oxidation and fragmentation, the impact of the char conversion process on the extent of fragmentation, the change of ash distributions with the char conversion, and the particulate matters (PM) size distribution, which is derived from the consequence of the competition between char fragmentation and included minerals partitioning and coalescence. The results indicate that with increasing initial char porosity (φ), the number of large size pores increases but the number of pores decreases, which leads to open pores increasing, close pores decreasing, and the surface reaction area increasing. While φ ≥ 0.4, char fragmentation obviously occurs during the stage in which the rates of char conversion are 0.4–0.6, and it looks as though the maximum value of fragmentation will transfer to an earlier conversion stage if it has a larger φ. The enhanced φ shows a positive effect on the increase in the number and concentration of PM < 10 μm (nominally aerodynamic diameter), this is attributed to char fragments more drastically, and the probability of mineral coalescence reduces a lot.

Effect of the optimal combination of bituminous coal with high biomass content on particulate matter (PM) emissions during co-firing

The co-firing of bituminous coal with woody biomass provided an available approach for cutting carbon emissions. In this work, a study on the application of high blending ratios of biomass with coal in co-firing was experimentally conducted in a lab-scale drop tube furnace (DTF) to reduce CO2 emissions and control deposition and corrosion due to the particulate material (PM) yield on the heating surface. Two kinds of woody biomass were blended with two kinds of bituminous coals at dosages of 5 wt%, 15 wt% and 30 wt% to investigate the PM emissions of different combinations during co-firing. With the addition of biomass, the experimental results show that the PM emission during co-firing may greatly increase or remain approximately stable compared with that during the single combustion of coal, which is dominantly determined by the combination of coal and biomass. To quantitively understand this effect, a mathematical method for the prediction and verification of PM yield during co-firing was developed by using a FactSage calculation based on the computer‐controlled scanning electron microscopy (CCSEM) analysis of raw fuel and fly ash. The predicted proportions of sticky particles with a liquid amount of >70 wt% demonstrate a significant difference with the variation in fuel type and biomass dosage during co-firing. According to predictions, 45.3% more sticky particles can be produced due to the diversity of added biomass when co-fired with the same kind of coal, conversely resulting in a 54.8% suppression of particles with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 μm or less (PM2.5) emissions. The morphological and elemental distribution of PM further validates that the liquid substance formed can be the decisive factor in generating sticky particles to control the formation of precursors by adsorption of alkali vapor or agglomeration of fine grains, thus inhibiting the PM yield with the addition of woody biomass during co-firing. The optimal combination for the co-firing of coal with high concentrations of biomass can be ascertained to simultaneously realize the reduction of carbon and PM emissions, which could provide a novel approach for the survival and development of coal-fired plants.

Effects of torrefaction and water-washing on the mineral transformation behavior during co-combustion of straw and coal: A CCSEM analysis

Biomass can be torrefied to improve the fuel quality prior to its utilization. In addition, a large number of soluble alkali metals can be removed by water washing, to solve slagging and other ash-related problems. In this study, computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy (CCSEM) was used to analyze the mineral composition and elemental distribution of straw, torrefied straw char, and torrefied-water washed straw char. The mineral transformation behavior and the distribution of main elements, when these biomass species were individually co-combusted with coal, were also studied in detail. The comparison of the mineral composition of bulk ash obtained from torrefied straw combustion and straw combustion revealed that the quartz phase decreased and the aluminosilicates of K-, Na-, and Ca–Fe–K increased in the former compared to that in the latter. After the torrefied straw was washed with water, the quartz and Si-Rich phases increased. K aluminosilicate decreased and the quartz phase increased when the torrefied sample was co-combusted with coal at both mixing ratios of 1:1 and 1:4 compared to straw/coal co-combustion. When the torrefied-water washing sample and coal were co-combusted at a 1:1 ratio, the quartz phase decreased, and the Si-Rich and mullite phases increased. When the straw/torrefied char/torrefied-washed char was co-fired with coal at the 1:4 ratio, the amount of K aluminosilicate was less compared to that observed at the 1:1 ratio. It can be concluded that both torrefaction and torrefaction-washing can reduce the content of low-melting-point aluminosilicates in the mineral composition of the studied biomass after co-combustion, which can be beneficial to alleviate the ash slagging problem.

Characterization of PM2.5 Carbonaceous Particles with a High-Efficiency SEM: A Case Study at a Suburban Area of Xi’an

In this study, a computer-controlled scanning electron microscope equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (CCSEM-EDX) was used to analyze the morphologies and chemical compositions of more than 10,000 individual particles in daytime and nighttime PM2.5 samples collected in suburban Xi’an. The particles in the PM2.5 samples were divided into 7 categories according to their elemental compositions, among which carbonaceous particles in the submicron size range were predominant in all samples (> 90% in numbers). We found that about 20% (in numbers) of carbonaceous particles contained elemental fluorine. The weight percentage of fluorine in the particles ranged between 0.1 and 0.8%. The morphologies and elemental distribution of the fluorine-containing particles indicate the particles were very likely from fossil fuel combustion and waste burning. Results presented in this case study are worthy of in-depth study because of the predominance of these internally mixed particles in the atmosphere and their possible risk to people’s health and the environment.

Photochemical reactions on aerosols at West Antarctica: A molecular case-study of nitrate formation among sea salt aerosols

Environmental implications of climate change are complex and exhibit regional variations both within and between the polar regions. The increase of solar UV radiation flux over Antarctica due to stratospheric ozone depletion creates the optimal conditions for photochemical reactions on the snow. Modeling, laboratory, and indirect field studies suggest that snowpack process release gases to the atmosphere that can react on sea salt particles in remote regions such as Antarctica, modifying aerosol composition and physical properties of aerosols. Here, we present evidence of photochemical processing in West Antarctica aerosols using microscopic and chemical speciation of individual atmospheric particles. Individual aerosol particles collected at the Brazilian module Criosfera 1 were analyzed by scanning transmission X-ray microscopy with near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (STXM/NEXAFS) combined with computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy (CCSEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) microanalysis. The displacement of chlorine relative to sodium was observed over most of the sea salt particles. Particles with a chemical composition consistent with NaCl-NO3 contributed up to 30% of atmospheric particles investigated. Overall, this study provides evidence that the snowpack and particulate nitrate photolysis should be considered in dynamic partition equilibrium in the troposphere. These findings may assist in reducing modeling uncertainties and present new insights into the aerosol chemical composition in the polar environment.

Segregation of respirable dust for chemical and toxicological analyses

Respirable dust can pass beyond ciliated airways of the respiratory tract and influence adverse health effects. Health effects can be studied using samples generated from bulk dust segregation. Because previous segregation methods diverge from size-selection criteria of the international convention for respirable particles (ICRP), a method was developed to approximate the ICRP. The method was compared to an ideal sampler by measuring the sample collection bias. The comparison shows that the uncertainty due to the bias was 0.10 based on European Standard EN13205:2014 criteria, which indicates that the segregator effectively follows the ICRP. Respirable particle size distributions were confirmed by an aerodynamic particle sizer and by computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy. Consequently, a systematic way to generate respirable powders for health effects studies and chemical analyses was developed.
