Assessing the effect of ceramic additives on the physical, rheological and mechanical properties of conventional glass ionomer luting cement – An in-vitro study

AimTo evaluate the effect of the addition of conventional ceramics on the physical, rheological and mechanical properties of conventional glass ionomer luting cement. Materials and methods5%, 10%, 15% and 20% (w/w) of Enamel and Body conventional ceramic additives (E44 Enamel and B96/c4 Body) were reinforced in the two commercially available glass ionomer luting cement – GC Fuji I (GC Corporation Tokyo, Japan) and Ketac Cem Radiopaque (3M ESPE AG). Setting time, film thickness and compressive strength of the cement was measured according to the American Dental Association Specification number 96 for luting cement. Enthalpy change of the cement reaction was measured with the help of Differential Scanning Calorimetry analysis. Compatibility between the sizes of powder particles was measured with the help of a particle size analyzer. Results5% of ceramic additive could not improve much of the compressive strength. Compressive strength increased significantly (p < 0.05) with the addition of 10% of ceramic additive, beyond which, there was a gradual decrease in strength. Although the setting time and film thickness were also shown to increase due to the additive, the former did not exceed the limit specified by the American Dental Association Specification number 96 (2–8 min for setting time and 25 microns for film thickness). ConclusionAddition of 10% of conventional ceramics resulted in a significant increase in the compressive strength of GIC Luting Cement without any significant compromise in its setting time. The substantial increase in film thickness is a major limitation. Use of ceramic additives with physical properties compatible with that of the glass ionomer cement may aid in increasing the compressive strength without compromising its setting time or film thickness.

Cement reinforcing and toughening agent microcrystalline brownmillerite: preparation and hydration

As one of the basement phases of cement, the performance of microcrystalline brownmillerite (MB) has attracted attention for a long time. Brownmillerite and MB were prepared using different raw meals and the effects of MB on the mechanical and hydration properties of cement after replacing cement with MB at 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8% and 10% by weight at a constant water/binder ratio of 0·44 (25°C) were investigated. The results showed that the optimum temperature for the preparation of brownmillerite was 1350°C (held for 100 min). The addition of MB improved the compressive strength of cement. Specimens with 4 wt% MB (M4) had the highest compressive strength and the tensile strength and toughness of M4 specimens were better than those of specimens without MB (M0). In addition, MB prepared using calcium carbonate (CCMB; elastic modulus 3150 MPa) showed better mechanical properties than MB prepared with calcium hydroxide (CHMB; elastic modulus 4002 MPa) and calcium oxide (COMB; elastic modulus 3765 MPa). A model of the strength enhancement effect of MB on a cement matrix was established. Heat of hydration test results showed that the normalised heat flow of M4 was smaller than that of M0 and the cumulative heat of mortars was in the order M0 (160·29 J) &gt; M4 (154·07 J, COMB) &gt; M4 (152·25 J, CHMB) &gt; M4 (151·98 J, CCMB).

Brushite cement containing gelatin: evaluation of mechanical strength and in vitro degradation

Abstract Calcium phosphate cements (CPCs) are potential materials for repairing bone defects, mainly due to their excellent biocompatibility and osteoconductivity. Nevertheless, their low mechanical properties limit their usage in clinical applications. The gelatin addition may improve the mechanical and biological properties of CPCs, but their solubility in water may increase the porosity of the cement during degradation. Thus, the aim of this work was to investigate the influence of gelatin on the setting time, compressive strength and degradation rate of a brushite cement. CPCs were prepared with the addition of 0, 5, 10 and 20 wt% of gelatin powder in the solid phase of the cement. The results indicated that the setting time increased with gelatin. Furthermore, cement with 20 wt% of gelatin had an initial compressive strength of 14.1±1.8 MPa while cement without gelatin had 4.5±1.2 MPa. The weight loss, morphology and compressive strength were evaluated after degradation in Ringer’s solution. According to the weight loss data, gelatin was eliminated of samples during degradation. It was concluded that the presence of gelatin improved CPCs mechanical properties; however, as degradation in Ringer’s solution evolved, cement compressive strength decreased due to gelatin dissolution and, consequently, an increase in sample porosity.

Strength and Damping Properties of Cementitious Composites Incorporating Original and Alkali Treated Flax Fibers

This experimental investigation focused on the mechanical and damping properties of raw and alkali treated flax fibers reinforced cementitious composites. The objective of this study was to research the influence of flax fiber for the damping properties of cementitious composites. The mechanical strengths were obtained using compressive and flexural tests and damping properties were measured using a dynamic mechanical analysis. Structural modifications to the treated flax fibers were analyzed using scanning electronic microscopy and mercury intrusion porosimetry. Results showed that cement compressive strength was decreased, and flexural strength was increased by the addition of untreated flax fibers. Alkali treatment improved the mechanical strength of flax reinforced cement. The addition of flax fibers improved cement damping properties, and the damping effect of untreated flax fibers was greater than that of alkali treated fibers. The loss tangent of the cementitious composites reinforced with raw and alkali treated flax fibers at an amount of 1 wt % of cement was improved by 45.83% and 37.5% at 20 Hz, respectively. The damping properties of flax fiber was attributed to friction between elementary fibers and between adjacent fiber cell walls and slipping between the fiber and matrix. Callouses, pectin, and lignocellulose in untreated flax fiber contributed to damping and their removal by alkali treatment was the main reason why untreated flax fibers had a greater damping effect as compared to alkali-modified flax fibers.

Microstructure and Strength of Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) Whisker Reinforced Cement Paste After Exposed to High Temperatures

Fire resistance research of a new building material is the important part of public protection and necessary for its large scale use in construction project. Although cheap calcium carbonate whisker (CW) could improve the mechanical properties of cementitious composites under ambient temperature, there is no information about the influence of high temperature on CW reinforced cementitious composites. In order to bridge this gap, this research studied the strength and microstructure changes of CW and CW reinforced cement paste after exposed to evaluated temperatures. CW and Portland cement paste with 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% CW having water/cement ratio of 0.30 was exposed to the temperatures of 20, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900 and 1000°C. 40 mm × 40 mm × 160 mm specimens were employed to determine the residual flexural and compressive strength of CW reinforced cement. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), matched energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA) and X-ray powder diffractometer (XRD) were employed to detect the microstructure changes. CW could act as micro-fiber to increase the residual flexural and compressive strength of cement and the enhancement is better than carbon fiber and polypropylene fiber from room temperature to 600°C, which means that CW can be used to replace carbon fiber and polypropylene fiber as fire resistance additional material in cementitious composites. TGA presented that in the process of cement hydration and heating, CW may bring different hydration products phase: Ca(OH)2 and C–S–H (I). CaCO3 produced by cement hydration is not as stable as CW. The onset phase transformation temperature from aragonite CaCO3 to calcite is about 400°C, which can be proved by the XRD test and the morphologies under SEM. At the same time, internal autoclaving in cement paste produced new hydration products on the surface of the calcite CW. The bond between these new hydration products and calcite was stronger than the old hydration products and aragonite CW, proved by the EDS test. Hence, after expose to temperature range from 400°C to 600°C, CW demonstrates better reinforcing effect than that at lower temperatures. CW reinforced cementitious composites may possibly be employed as a protection material for fire easily damaged structures, due to its good residual mechanical properties after expose to evaluated temperature lower than 600°C and good economical efficiency.

Smart Cement Compressive Piezoresistive, Stress-Strain, and Strength Behavior with Nanosilica Modification

Abstract In this study, smart cement with a water-to-cement ratio of 0.38 was modified with up to 1 % silica nanoparticles (NanoSiO2) to evaluate the effect not only on the sensing properties but also on the compressive stress-strain relationship and strength. The oil well cement (class H) and cement modified with NanoSiO2 were characterized using X-ray diffraction analysis and thermal gravimetric analysis. The smart cement was prepared by adding 0.1 % of the conductive filler based on the percolation theory concept to make the cement piezoresistive yet remain a nonconductive material. Testing evaluated the smart cement behavior with and without NanoSiO2 to verify the sensitivity of electrical resistivity changes with time and compressive loading. The addition of 0.5 and 1 % NanoSiO2 increased the initial electrical resistivity of the smart cement by 17 and 35 %, respectively. In one day, the maximum change in the electrical resistivity (RI24hr) for the smart cement without NanoSiO2 was 364 %. The RI24hr for the smart cement with NanoSiO2 decreased with the amount of NanoSiO2. The addition of 1 % NanoSiO2 increased the compressive strength of the smart cement by 14 and 42 % after 1 and 28 days of curing, respectively. The nonlinear Vipulanandan p-q curing model was used to predict the changes in electrical resistivity with curing time. The piezoresistivity of smart cement with NanoSiO2 was over 500 times higher than the regular cement, depending on the curing time and NanoSiO2 content. The Vipulanandan p-q stress strain and stress change in resistivity models also predicted the experimental results very well. For smart cement modified with NanoSiO2, the resistivity change at peak stress was over 1,250 times higher than the change in the compressive strain. A linear correlation was obtained between the RI24hr and the compressive strength of the modified smart cement based on the curing time.

Modeling of compressive strength of cemented sandy soil

This paper attempted to show the application of particle swarm optimization in the prediction of the compressive strength of cement sandy soil from the curing period, porosity of sample and percentage of cement. The results of the study show that the unconfined compressive strength of the cement stabilized sandy soil increases with an increasing cement content curing time period. Moreover the compressive strength decreases with an increasing porosity. The compressive strength improvement due to cement treatment has a larger increase in samples with less porosity. In addition, particle swarm optimization algorithm is and accurate technique in estimation of compressive strength of cement stabilized sandy soil. In order to compare of existing correlations, a total number of 100 unconfined compressive tests and 15 scanning electron microscope tests have been conducted on cemented Babolsar sand. It can be concluded that compared to existing correlations models, particle swarm optimization algorithm models give more reliable prediction about compressive strength of cement satblized sandy soil. Moreover, the sensitivity analysis of the polynomial model shows that cement content and porosity have significant impact on predicting unconfined compressive strength.

Using Refined Phosphogypsum to Replace Natural Gypsum in Portland Cement Production in Vietnam

This study assessed the effects of different contents of two refined phosphogypsums (PG1, PG2) on standard consistency, setting times, compressive strength and sulfate resistance of cement. PG2 possesses higher water-soluble impurities such as P2O5, F content than PG1. The results were compared to those of cement containing natural gypsum (NG). The results showed that water demand of cement reduces when the content of the gypsums increases, especially with PG1 and NG. The phosphogypsums prolong the setting times of cement. The higher the gypsum content is, the more the 3-d compressive strength of cement can obtains. The low impurity phosphogypsum (PG1) accelerates the 3-d strength but lowers the 91-d strength of cement compared to the high impurity phosphogypsum (PG2). The strength of cement containing NG is always between those of the phosphogypsums at the ages of 3 and 91 days. There is a suitable content of gypsum to produce the highest strength of the cement at the ages of 28 and 91 days. Deterioration of the cement in sodium sulfate solution (50g/l) is more severely when increasing gypsum content. The sulfate resistance of cement containing PG1 is lower than that of cement containing PG2 or NG.

Assessment of Physical and Mechanical Properties of Concrete Produced from Various Portland Cement Brands

Construction projects require cement, which must have definite qualities so as to play its part separately in structure. The compressive strength of cement and, consequently, its physical properties could vary as a result of variations in the raw materials, as well as in manufacturing conditions. Therefore, an experimental study has been checked out herein by investigating the mechanical and physical properties of concrete specimens by means of four different types of Ordinary Portland Cements, namely Black Bull, Lucky, Pak Land and DG obtained from the market of Sindh Pakistan. Based on obtained results, it was found that Lucky cement type performed well when compared to other three types both in compressive and tensile strength of concrete. Although there were some differences in the physical properties of cement used in this study, however, they all meet with the requirements of international standards.

Effects of Adding Boron Compounds to Glycol Based Grinding Aids on Cement Compressive Strengths Performance

In this study, the effect of substituting boron compounds with glycol-based grinding aids to the compressive strength performances of cement was investigated. Monoethylene glycol (MEG) and diethylene glycol (DEG) were used as glycol-based grinding aids, and anhydrous borax and boric acid were used as boron compounds in the tests. CEM I type cement production was carried out with the addition of grinding aid mixtures to Portland clinker and some gypsum in the experiments. All produced cement samples were tested for Blaine fineness, xrf elemental analysis and 2, 7 and 28 days compressive strength tests. Test results of grinding aids of MEG and boron compounds mixture showed no increase in any age of compressive strengths performances related to MEG used itself. However, with the addition of boron compounds to DEG increased grinding aid performance at all ages (2, 7 and 28 days). Possible reasons for this increase could be borate esters formed with DEG and boric acid in a basic medium.

Some Mechanical Properties of Cement Treated Base (CTB) Incorporating Waste Portland Cement Concrete Under Different Corresponding Conditions

This research represents a trial of understanding and improving mechanical properties of base or subbase granular materials, used in pavement construction, stabilized with Portland cement known as cement treated base (CTB) in terms of density, optimum water content (O.W.C), and compression Strength of three curing ages (3, 7, 28) days under different situations. Different Portland cement percent of (0, 5, 7, 10, 12, and 15) % by weight were added to selected base course granular materials (type B according to local standard specification in Iraq). Results showed that the density of mixture increase with increasing added cement percent, while O.W.C takes its maximum value around 7% cement content, and compression strength increase with increasing cement content and curing age. Then effect of replacing 50% of natural granular materials by waste Portland cement concrete (WPCC) was investigated on the results of (0, 7&amp; 15)% cement content on density, O.W.C and compression strength in the three curing ages. Results reveled although density of mixture cooperating WPCC for 0% cement content was higher, CTB of natural granular material were denser. On the other hand compressive strength decrease in case of using WPCC for all percent cement added and curing ages. Finally, effect of soaking in water on CTB with (7 &amp;15)% cement compressive strength of three curing ages was studied, under three period of soaking (1 week, 2 weeks, &amp;one month). Test results exposed that, CTB Compressive strength increase with increasing soaking period but still less than that of un-soaked and for all curing ages. For each test stage mathematics relationships with acceptable correlation were presented proofing test results tendency.

Mechanical properties and microstructure of graphene oxide cement-based composites

Aiming to improve the flexural and compressive strength of cement, graphene oxide (GO) was incorporated into the production of cement-based composites in this study. The effects of the GO content and water/cement (w/c) ratio on the mechanical properties and microstructure of GO–cement composites were systematically investigated through experimental tests. Testing results show that with a constant w/c ratio, the flexural and compressive strengths of the developed GO–cement composites increased first and then declined with respect to the increase in GO content. Specifically, the increase in flexural strength was more significant than that in compressive strength, indicating that the addition of GO could help improve the toughness of cement composites. Additionally, a combination of a w/c ratio of 0.35 and a GO content of 0.05 wt% led to both the highest flexural and compressive strengths. The investigation of the composition–microstructure–strength relationship shows that the introduction of GO could help improve the macroscopic properties for the cement-based composites via improving the microstructure of cement hydration products, refining the crystal size, and forming a denser and more uniform network structure. The filling effect, hydration effect and nucleation effect of GO could be optimized with an appropriate combination of w/c ratio and GO content.

Lateritic cement- and lime-stabilised bricks and blocks for affordable housing

The compressive strengths of cement- and lime-stabilised lateritic bricks and blocks were investigated for economical construction in developing countries. Cement-stabilised lateritic blocks and bricks were found to have the best performance and are thus recommended for use.

Sustainable cement slurry using rice husk ash for high temperature oil well

In oil well cementing where high temperature are involved, a silica source is add to the cement composition to inhibit cement sheath compressive strength retrogression. The mechanical properties of cement used in oil wells may benefit from the incorporation of rice husk ash (RHA) due to its high silica content. RHA has also become attractive as cement additive owing to its low cost and renewability. The aim of the present study was to develop a cement slurry for high-temperature oil well using RHA as anti strength retrogression additive. A typical G cement slurry was prepared with 40% of RHA and submitted to curing cycles of 7–28 days to evaluate the influence of the RHA at both the bottom hole static temperature (BHST) and 300 °C. The results showed that the addition of RHA increased by 30.55% the compressive strength after curing for 28 days at BHST conditions and by 11.18% at 300 °C. XRD analysis of high temperature cycles showed the presence of xenotlite and tobermorite, which are crystalline phases responsible to maintain the cement compressive strength. The RHA has been shown to be a sustainable alternative to commercial silica flour. In addition, the present study envisages the RHA disposal to be considerably reduced by its application in the petroleum industry.

Analysis of Factors Affecting the Compressive Strength of Cement Stabilized Gravel

The compressive strength of cement stabilized gravel is an important parameter of pavement base design and performance evaluation. In this study, the parameter selection of the compressive strength of cement stabilized macadam as the research direction, by collecting both the compressive strength of cement stabilized macadam mixture test data, establishing database of strength, obtain various parameters represent value under different reliability, analysis of specimen forming method, type of aggregate gradation and different influence factors such as the relationship between the compressive strength of the cement stable macadam mixture, using the mathematical regression method, set up under the condition of different curing ages, cement dose the prediction equation of intensity of verified the established logarithm model has higher fitting precision and can provide for pavement structure design and performance forecast value basis.

Effect of carbon fibers grafted with carbon nanotubes on mechanical properties of cement-based composites

In this study, a novel chemical method was developed for grafting carbon nanotubes (CNTs) onto the surface of carbon fibers (CF) using (3-Aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (KH550). The CNTs with carboxyl groups and oxidized CF (O-CF) were modified by KH550 before the grafting procedure. The CNTs were grafted onto the surface of CF through SiOSi bond formation due to the hydrolysis and self-condensation reactions of KH550. The effects of CNTs grafted CF (CF-CNTs) on mechanical properties of cement-based composites were studied and compared with composites containing oxidized CF and raw CF. The morphology and chemical structure of CF-CNTs composites were characterized by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Laser Raman Spectrometer (LRS), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The test results indicated that a large number of CNTs were uniformly and densely distributed on the surface of CF. The results also indicated that the CNTs and CF were held together by strong chemical bonds. When 0.5 wt% CF-CNTs was added, the flexural strength values of cement pastes at 3d, 7d and 28d were higher than those of pure cement paste and cement pastes containing same content of oxidized CF by 48.5%, 42.2% and 45.5% and 20.7%, 14.6% and 21.5%, respectively. However, the addition of CF-CNTs had little effect on the compressive strength of cement.

The quality of materials such as cement also greatly affects the strength of the concrete after hardening, so the selection of cement quality must be in accordance with the concrete planning regulations in order to obtain optimal results. In Indonesia there are many new cement factories that produce to meet the needs of the community, one of which is the Conch brand cement. So in connection with the above, Conch cement can be examined to compare the value of compressive strength and flexural strength with old cement, namely cement Padang, Tiga Roda, Holcim and Bosowa which are generally always used in concrete planning at this time.The purpose of this study was to determine the comparison of compressive strength and flexural strength of the concrete and the multiplier between cement Padang, Three Wheels and Conch at 28 days of age. In this study using the method SNI 03-2834-2000. With cylindrical test specimens (150 mm x 300 mm) and size beams (150 mm x 150 mm x 600 mm) three specimens were made for each cement.The maximum concrete compressive strength is found in Padang cement with a compressive strength of 45.86 Mpa, for the minimum compressive strength found in Tiga Roda cement with compressive strength value of 40.19 Mpa and for the compressive strength of cement Conch there is a second with compressive strength value 42.84 Mpa. From the explanation above, the results of 28 days of concrete compressive strength with each cement brand still not reached the planned concrete compressive strength of 38 MPa. The maximum concrete flexural strength is found in Padang cement with a flexural strength value of 5.03 Mpa, for a minimum flexural strength value found in Tiga Roda cement with a flexural strength value of 3.96 Mpa and for the value of Conch cement compressive strength there is a second with flexural strength 4.43 Mpa. Assessment of the cement failure probability using statistical characterization of the strength data

Cement sheath failure may occur under the influence of induced stresses during service life of the well. For many years, analytical or numerical models have been developed to study the probability of the cement sheath failure under different circumstances. Cement compressive strength is considered as a valuable input parameter during the assessment of the cement failure probability. Usually the compressive strength data are obtained by conducting several direct laboratory experiments on cement samples. The average value of these experiments are reported and used in different cement failure models. However, this approach may results in underestimating the cement failure probability. As cement have heterogeneous structures, therefore their strength variations have a statistical character. In this work, the compressive strength data are represented by the Weibull distribution function, which then will be used in the cement failure probability calculations. Results show that using the statistically distributed compressive strength data in calculations, leads to more accurate outputs of the failure model.

Fuzzy Logic Approach in Determination of Strength in Concrete

The aim of this thesis is to address capabilities in the prediction of compressive strength of concrete to affect quality control in construction. To comprehend this, a compressive strength predicting model using the principles of fuzzy logic set theory had been employed. The model put into use ‘fuzzy logic’ as a tool to predict the compressive strength of concrete on a given day. Data collected from previous researches and laboratory work had been put into use in the model construction and testing. The input variables of water/binder ratio, cement content, water content, and fly ash percentage and the output variable of 28-day cement compressive strength were fuzzified by the use of triangular membership functions and Gaussian membership functions which were deployed for the fuzzy subsets. The prediction of the 28-day cement strength data by the developed fuzzy model proved to be quite satisfactory. The training and testing of 4 different models were done. The Minimum average percentage error levels in the fuzzy model were seen to be as low as (3%) in the case of Model 3. A comparative study of the different models (all 3 Triangular and 1 Gaussian) had been done. The results indicated that the application of the fuzzy logic algorithm was quite satisfactory when a triangular membership function with decreased subset range was used. The outputs of the Triangular and Gaussian models were almost similar.

Effect of Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag as Partial Cement Replacement on Compressive Strength of Concrete

Abstract The main objective of this research work is to determine the optimum replacement percentage of GGBS which can be suitably used. To fulfill the objective, various properties of concrete using GGBS have been evaluated. Mix design has been arrived for M25 concrete. Fineness, specific gravity (cement and GGBS), normal consistency, initial and final setting time and compressive strength of cement have been found out. Particle size distribution, bulking of fine aggregate, specific gravity, water absorption of fine aggregate and coarse aggregate are also found out. Three sets of experiments have been conducted for the compressive strength of concrete cubes without GGBS in which total nine concrete cubes have been casted and are tested at 7, 14 and 28 days. Then afterwards, 63 cubes, out of which, nine cubes each of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70%, GGBS replacement are also casted and are tested at 7, 14, and 28 days. Slump cone test has also been performed to find out the workability of control concrete and concrete with different percentage replacement. From the experimental investigations, it has been observed that, the workability of concrete increases with increase in percentage of GGBS. Compressive strength of concrete increases as the percentage of GGBS increases up to 40% replacement, beyond which it starts decreasing. The investigation revealed that the use of ground granulated blast-furnace slag, which is hazardous to the environment, may be used as a partial replacement of cement, which leads to economy and in addition, by utilizing the industrial wastes in the useful manner, the environment pollution is also reduced to great extent, which leads to sustainable development.
