Study, simulation and realization of a fuzzy logic-based MPPT controller in an isolated DC microgrid

This study presents a pioneering methodology for implementing the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller, based on fuzzy logic. Through a comprehensive performance analysis, we evaluate its effectiveness compared to the widely used perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm, which is a common MPPT technique. The main objective of our proposed MPPT approach is to improve the performance of a photovoltaic (PV) system. To evaluate the performance of the proposed MPPT controller and compare it with the P&O algorithm, we designed and simulated both controllers using MATLAB/Simulink. We also implemented a prototype of the controllers using an Arduino Mega board, and evaluated their performance under real operating conditions. The experimental results unequivocally confirm that the fuzzy logic-based MPPT controller outperforms the P&O algorithm in terms of performance, speed and accuracy. The fuzzy logic controller offers greater accuracy in tracking the maximum power point under various environmental circumstances, including variations in solar irradiation and connected load. Overall, this work contributes to the development of efficient and reliable MPPT controllers for PV systems, and provides a comparison of the performances of two popular MPPT techniques. Future research could explore other MPPT techniques and evaluate their performance using similar experimental setups.

Production of low-CO2 ternary binder using red sandstone, cement, and granulated blast furnace slag: A comprehensive performance analysis

Red sandstone is rich in reserves, and using it as a mineral admixture to partially replace cement can save cement consumption and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. This study uses spectral characterization, electron microscopy image analysis, mechanical property testing and other methods to study the fluidity, compressive strength, heat of hydration, carbonation degree, microstructure and thermal damage of composite cement-based materials containing red sandstone and slag. The experiment results showed that in ternary mixed cement, the composite cement mixed with 5% slag and 10% red sandstone shows similar flow properties to cement paste. Moreover, as the mineral content (red sandstone and slag) increases, the dissolution peak of the Al phase appears earlier, and the degree of carbonation increases. Furthermore, the CO2 emissions per unit strength gradually decrease. After 28 days of curing, thermal damage experiments demonstrated that the strength of the sample increases by more than 3.6% when the mineral content is greater than 15% at 200℃. Samples were subjected to 600 °C and 900 °C, and the strength of the red sandstone sample with a content of 15% decreased significantly. Moreover, as the temperature increases to (600 °C and 900 °C), the lattice of CnS becomes more and more ordered.

Design of a Compliant Sternum Prosthesis for Improving Respiratory Dynamics

This study presents a novel approach to sternum prosthesis design, aiming to address the limitations of the current solutions by employing compliant mechanisms. The research focuses on developing a prosthetic design capable of generating lifting movements on ribs during breathing. First, a videogrammetry experimental test and virtual simulations were conducted to ascertain the vertical forces applied to each sternum joint. Subsequently, a compliant mechanism design was initiated, involving optimization and finite element analysis (FEM). A comprehensive kinematic performance analysis was performed to evaluate the prosthetic design. The results indicate that the obtained displacements of each rib closely align with those reported in the existing literature, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed solution. In conclusion, the developed sternum prosthesis exhibits the capability to recover approximately 56% of the ribs’ natural movements, highlighting its potential as an innovative and promising solution in the field of chest prosthetics.

Towards sustainable solar cells: unveiling the latest developments in bio-nano materials for enhanced DSSC efficiency

Abstract Fossil fuels—instrumental in powering the nineteenth-century Industrial Revolution—are now under heightened scrutiny due to environmental concerns and carbon emissions. Consequently, there is a global impetus towards achieving carbon-neutral energy production, with solar energy emerging as a cornerstone in this transition. Over the past three decades, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have gained increasing prominence due to their unique advantages. This review elucidates several crucial elements essential to DSSC construction, notably bio-nano materials, prized for their structural flexibility, cost-effectiveness and high molar absorption coefficient. It delves into the intricate relationship between molecular structure and DSSC performance, showcasing significant advancements with light-to-power conversion efficiencies reaching 11%. A comprehensive analysis of the photovoltaic performance of DSSCs utilizing bio-nano-based dyes offers invaluable insights into the state of this rapidly evolving industry. Key components under scrutiny include transparent conductive oxide (TCO) layers, physical techniques for metal oxide deposition onto TCO thin films, diverse dye variants and foundational knowledge of components ripe for growth and enhancement. Moreover, the review outlines the latest breakthroughs in the field, providing glimpses into the current status of prototype DSSCs.

Privacy-preserving Scanpath Comparison for Pervasive Eye Tracking

As eye tracking becomes pervasive with screen-based devices and head-mounted displays, privacy concerns regarding eye-tracking data have escalated. While state-of-the-art approaches for privacy-preserving eye tracking mostly involve differential privacy and empirical data manipulations, previous research has not focused on methods for scanpaths. We introduce a novel privacy-preserving scanpath comparison protocol designed for the widely used Needleman-Wunsch algorithm, a generalized version of the edit distance algorithm. Particularly, by incorporating the Paillier homomorphic encryption scheme, our protocol ensures that no private information is revealed. Furthermore, we introduce a random processing strategy and a multi-layered masking method to obfuscate the values while preserving the original order of encrypted editing operation costs. This minimizes communication overhead, requiring a single communication round for each iteration of the Needleman-Wunsch process. We demonstrate the efficiency and applicability of our protocol on three publicly available datasets with comprehensive computational performance analyses and make our source code publicly accessible.

Thermodynamical Analysis of the Distillation Column for Targeting Minimum Energy in Ammonia–Water Absorption Refrigeration Cycle

In this study, a comprehensive method to optimize distillation columns in ammonia–water absorption refrigeration, power, and cogeneration cycles is introduced. The novelty of this work lies in a comprehensive analysis of the distillation column's thermal performance and the introduction of a new design framework that maximizes heat integration. Key findings include the critical role of the solution heat exchanger, especially at lower generation and evaporation temperatures. Using a saturated liquid or two‐phase feed can achieve up to 80% efficiency at a feed composition of 0.3. Moreover, in the results, the substantial potential for improving the coefficient of performance (COP) through strategic design is highlighted. Notably, minimizing the pinch point temperature difference to 0 °C can boost the COP by 6%, while optimal feed placement can increase it by 9%. Incorporating feed preconditioning and side exchangers can lead to a 22% COP enhancement, indicating the significance of heat integration to the distillation column. In this study, a graphic guideline for selecting cycles that can achieve a minimum of 10% COP improvement without introducing unnecessary complexity is delivered and it suggests that distillation columns can be simplified by using a combination of separators, heaters, and coolers in certain cases.

Combining Different Wearable Devices to Assess Gait Speed in Real-World Settings.

Assessing mobility in daily life can provide significant insights into several clinical conditions, such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of wearable devices' performance in gait speed estimation and explore optimal device combinations for everyday use. Using data collected from smartphones, smartwatches, and smart shoes, we evaluated the individual capabilities of each device and explored their synergistic effects when combined, thereby accommodating the preferences and possibilities of individuals for wearing different types of devices. Our study involved 20 healthy subjects performing a modified Six-Minute Walking Test (6MWT) under various conditions. The results revealed only little performance differences among devices, with the combination of smartwatches and smart shoes exhibiting superior estimation accuracy. Particularly, smartwatches captured additional health-related information and demonstrated enhanced accuracy when paired with other devices. Surprisingly, wearing all devices concurrently did not yield optimal results, suggesting a potential redundancy in feature extraction. Feature importance analysis highlighted key variables contributing to gait speed estimation, providing valuable insights for model refinement.

Performance Analysis of Feeding System in Sugar Mill with Consideration of Bagasse Jamming

Objectives: The sugar industry comprises various units, including feeding, crushing, evaporation, refining, and crystallization. The feeding system is the most crucial aspect of the sugar mill as the sugar-making process starts from here. So faults which occur here are divided into four categories minor, major, cease faults and walkout faults. This paper sets out to showcase a comprehensive analysis of the system's performance, availability, and profit. The study takes into account how minor, major, and cease faults can potentially impact the system's overall effectiveness. The findings of this research hold significant importance for sugar mills that prioritize optimal performance and profit. Methods: Primary data regarding various failures is collected from Ch. Devilal Co-Operative Sugar Mills Limited, Ahulana, Gohana. To find MTSF, Reliability, Availability, Profit etc., a mathematical model has been created. This model is based on the Semi-Markov process and Regenerative Point Technique and equations are drawn using exponential distribution and solved with Cremer’s rule and Laplace ­- Stieltjes transformation. Findings: A fault, Bagasse Jamming is considered a cease fault which occurs very frequently in the feeding system. Therefore, it is found that cease faults and major faults have more adverse impacts on the system's performance and availability than minor faults. MTSF, Availability and Profit are inversely proportional to these faults. When a major fault is 0.0035 and the cease fault is 0.0042, MTSF is nearly 100. So, to gain more profit we have to pay more attention to these faults. Novelty: The paper's results will aid in fault removal, increase availability, and optimize maintenance tactics in the sugar industry. Matched Stochastic Resonance Enhanced Underwater Passive Sonar Detection under Non-Gaussian Impulsive Background Noise.

Remote passive sonar detection with low-frequency band spectral lines has attracted much attention, while complex low-frequency non-Gaussian impulsive noisy environments would strongly affect the detection performance. This is a challenging problem in weak signal detection, especially for the high false alarm rate caused by heavy-tailed impulsive noise. In this paper, a novel matched stochastic resonance (MSR)-based weak signal detection model is established, and two MSR-based detectors named MSR-PED and MSR-PSNR are proposed based on a theoretical analysis of the MSR output response. Comprehensive detection performance analyses in both Gasussian and non-Gaussian impulsive noise conditions are presented, which revealed the superior performance of our proposed detector under non-Gasussian impulsive noise. Numerical analysis and application verification have revealed the superior detection performance with the proposed MSR-PSNR detector compared with energy-based detection methods, which can break through the high false alarm rate problem caused by heavy-tailed impulsive noise. For a typical non-Gasussian impulsive noise assumption with α=1.5, the proposed MSR-PED and MSR-PSNR can achieve approximately 16 dB and 22 dB improvements, respectively, in the detection performance compared to the classical PED method. For stronger, non-Gaussian impulsive noise conditions corresponding to α=1, the improvement in detection performance can be more significant. Our proposed MSR-PSNR methods can overcome the challenging problem of a high false alarm rate caused by heavy-tailed impulsive noise. This work can lay a solid foundation for breaking through the challenges of underwater passive sonar detection under non-Gaussian impulsive background noise, and can provide important guidance for future research work.

Exergy performance analysis of hydrogen recirculation ejectors exhibiting phase change behaviour in PEMFC applications

A comprehensive analysis of flow behavior and exergy performance was conducted in hydrogen recirculation ejector, taking into account the phase change of humid hydrogen for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) systems. A two-phase nonequilibrium condensation CFD model integrating the entropy transport equations was established. The effect of phase change on ejectors’ performance under various primary pressure, secondary pressure and temperature, and back pressure were analyzed. When primary pressure was adjusted into 3.0 bar, a liquid fraction of 4.56 % was observed at the outlet, while the liquid fraction will increase to 15.35 % when the inlet pressure got to 5.0 bar. Then, the values of mass flow rate and liquid mass fraction on different sections under variable secondary temperature and back pressure were calculated. Finally, it is found that a larger primary pressure brought an increase in exergy destruction. So was exergy destruction ratio. However, increasing secondary pressure leads to the opposite result. With the increase of secondary temperature from 60 to 80 °C, exergy destruction increases from 330.28 to 390.23 kJ/kg but the destruction ratio decreases from 29.85 % to 26.19 %.

A Simplified Power Regulation Strategy for Grid-tied PMSG-based Marine Current Turbine System in High-speed Marine Current Conditions

Marine current turbine systems (MCTSs) play a crucial role in harnessing renewable energy from ocean currents. These systems are designed with specific rated values of marine current speed, dictating their optimal operational parameters. However, the dynamic nature of marine currents can lead to fluctuations, occasionally exceeding the rated values for which these systems are designed. This poses significant challenges to the efficient and safe operation of MCTSs, necessitating the development of effective power regulation strategies. In response to these challenges, this paper presents a simplified power regulation strategy to address the complexities of high-speed marine current conditions. The strategy focuses on constraining the reference torque command, a pivotal parameter governing power generation within MCTS. By precisely managing the reference torque command, the strategy aims to ensure that power output remains within designated limits, thereby safeguarding the MCTS despite high-speed marine current conditions. The proposed strategy leverages a computational approach to determine the generator's reference torque command, utilizing key parameters such as the rated power of the MCT and the mechanical angular rotor speed. It facilitates seamless transition between unconstrained reference torque command (URTC) and constrained reference torque command (CRTC) modes, enabling precise power regulation. This flexibility empowers the MCTS to respond promptly to changes in marine current conditions, facilitating precise and responsive power regulation. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy, the paper conducts a comprehensive analysis of MCTS performance across both URTC and CRTC modes utilizing Typhoon HIL604 real-time simulator. Through detailed examinations of MCT speed responses, generator torque, output power, and grid-side parameters, the study provides valuable insights into the dynamics of MCTS operation. This comprehensive understanding enhances the stability and adaptability of MCTSs across diverse operating conditions, thereby advancing their potential as a sustainable energy solution.

Performance Analysis on Combined Energy Supply System Based on Carnot Battery with Packed-Bed Thermal Energy Storage

Pumped-thermal electricity storage (PTES) is a promising energy storage technology with high-efficiency, energy density, and versatility of installation conditions. In this study, a 20 kW/5 h phase change packed-bed thermal energy storage experimental system is established and employed to validate the accuracy of thermal energy storage (TES) component within the broader PTES system. Moreover, a novel combined system based on latent TES is proposed, incorporating Joule-Brayton and organic Rankine cycle-based subsystems for supplying cold, heat, electricity, and hydrogen. Operational strategies are also explored to optimize the multifunctional capabilities of the system. The thermal energy density of the system, when phase change materials (PCMs) are used instead of sensible heat storage materials, can be improved from 167.85 kWh/m3 to 272.58 kWh/m3. Proton exchange membrane electrolyzer cycle (PEMEC) is coupled into the Carnot battery system, and a comprehensive analysis of the system's performance is conducted. With the charging time of 5 h, the energy performance of the multi-generation system (EPMG) can be reached up to 143% and 146% in combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) and multi-generation energy system (MGES) modes, respectively. The MGES mode is made 3.44% more exergy efficient than the CCHP mode as a result of the ingenious coupling of the hydrogen production process with the power generation process and heating/cooling processes. The system in one charging/discharging process has the capability to generate 240.86 kg of hydrogen, 34.82 MWh of heat, 12.97 MWh of cold, and 40.90 MWh of electricity.

Breast Cancer Disease Prediction Using Random Forest Regression and Gradient Boosting Regression

The current research endeavors to evaluate the efficacy of regression-based machine learning algorithms through an assessment of their performance using diverse metrics. The focus of our study involves the implementation of the breast cancer Wisconsin (Diagnostic) dataset, employing both the random forest and gradient-boosting regression algorithms. In our comprehensive performance analysis, we utilized key metrics such as Mean Squared Error (MSE), R-squared, Mean Absolute Error (MAE), and Coefficient of Determination (COD), supplemented by additional metrics. The evaluation aimed to gauge the algorithms' accuracy and predictive capabilities. Notably, for continuous target variables, the gradient-boosting regression model emerged as particularly noteworthy in terms of performance when compared to other models. The gradient-boosting regression model exhibited remarkable results, highlighting its superiority in handling the breast cancer dataset. The model achieved an impressively low MSE value of 0.05, indicating minimal prediction errors. Furthermore, the R-squared value of 0.89 highlighted the model's ability to explain the variance in the data, affirming its robust predictive power. The Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 0.14 reinforced the model's accuracy in predicting continuous outcomes. Beyond these core metrics, the study incorporated additional measures to provide a comprehensive understanding of the algorithms' performance. The findings underscore the potential of gradient-boosting regression in enhancing predictive accuracy for datasets with continuous target variables, particularly evident in the context of breast cancer diagnosis. This research contributes valuable insights to the ongoing exploration of machine learning algorithms, providing a basis for informed decision-making in medical and predictive analytics domains.

Experimental investigation and optimization of heat pipe heat exchanger performance under two distinct heat transport mediums through TOPSIS approach

This paper presents a comprehensive thermal performance analysis of the heat pipe heat exchanger by varying the input process parameters and optimizing the best condition for waste heat recovery through the TOPSIS technique. In this work, the heat pipe is constructed with a copper tube and segmented into evaporator and condenser sections carrying hot and cold fluids with a half-fill ratio. The heat pipe is oriented in 0° horizontally with the wick material made from stainless steel and works based on the capillary principle. The efficiency of the HPHE is evaluated by varying the input operational parameters, namely heat input, mass flow rate of hot fluid, inlet temperature of hot fluid, and mass flow rate of cold fluid, on response variables, specifically thermal resistance, energy balance ratio, universal heat transfer coefficient, and effectiveness. The experiment was designed for four factors at three levels as per Taguchi’s L27 orthogonal array, and the best optimising condition was determined by employing the multi-objective technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) approach. The best input condition found was A3B1C1D3, in which the heat input was at 90 W, the mass flow rate of hot fluid was at 0.2 kg min−1, the mass flow rate of cold fluid was at 0.1 kg min−1, and the inlet temperature was at 60 °C. The effect of process parameters and their significance on output responses was analysed by executing an analysis of variance (ANOVA) statistical method. The mathematical regression model was generated, and validation was made to investigate the prediction error percentage.

Comprehensive performance analysis of training functions in flow prediction model using artificial neural network

Higher Himalayan catchments are often poorly monitored for hydrological activities involving flood flow prediction for the safety of riverside communities and the successful operation of hydropower projects. This study aimed to estimate the comparative performance of artificial neural network (ANN) based flow prediction models using 10 years of daily river flow data of Kaligandaki catchment at Kotagaun, Nepal, which is a snow-fed catchment in the Himalayan region. The flow prediction models were trained and tested at a hydrological station using the previous 3 days’ river flow data to predict the 1-day ahead flow data. Eight different training functions were employed in an ANN model for comprehensive statistical assessment of accuracy and precision of each training function. The most significant and validated result obtained in this study is the comprehensive comparison of various training functions’ performance, and identification of the most efficient training function for the study case. Among the training functions investigated, the Levenberg-Marquardt backpropagation function exhibits the best performance for the model having Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency, root mean square error and mean absolute error values of 0.866, 209.578 and 75.422, respectively. This study provides a fundamental basis for accurate flow prediction of topographically challenged catchments where hydrological monitoring and data collection may be limited. In particular, this model will help to improve early warning system, hydrological planning, and the safety of riverside communities in the Himalayan region.

Comprehensive thermal performance analysis of an air-cooled staggered configured Li-ion battery pack- A numerical and experimental approach

The discharge rate, ambient temperature, and airflow cooling velocity of a Li-ion battery pack BTMS have a direct impact on the battery's temperature, performance, and safety. Monitoring these is essential for avoiding overheating, ensuring optimal performance, and extending the battery's lifespan. This study comprehensively assesses the thermal performance of staggered structured cells of a 24.00V, 10.00Ah Li-ion battery pack cooled by ambient air. Both experimental and numerical methods are employed to achieve this evaluation. The primary objective is to investigate how varying discharge rates (0.50, 1.00, 1.50, 2.00, and 2.50; C), the seasonal temperatures in Prayagraj, India (282.00, 296.00, 305.00, and 315.00; K), and airflow velocities (0.50, 1.00, 1.50, and 2.00; m/s) influence the battery pack's thermal behaviour. A comparative analysis is also conducted between the present study and the author's prior research, focusing on the aligned configuration. The study observed a temperature increase in the airflow direction, from the inlet to the outlet, with the highest temperature recorded in the second-to-last column of the battery pack. Both numerical analysis and experimental testing confirmed that decreasing the airflow velocity from 2.00 m/s to 0.50 m/s reduced thermal performance by enhancing temperature in the airflow path, as well as transverse and circumferential temperature variations. Conversely, as the load on the battery (discharge rate) decreased from 2.50 C to 0.50 C, the thermal performance estimating parameters; Tmax, Tavg., ΔTmax, and σT, exhibited a declined trend. This is due to the greater heat generation at higher discharge rates. Furthermore, it was observed that as the ambient temperature increased from 282.00 K to 315.00 K, the temperature of the battery cells also increased. Nonetheless, the cooling patterns remained similar across these different temperature range conditions. Moreover, experimental results compete with the numerical outcomes with a maximum absolute percentage error of 1.21%. The staggered configuration gives lower and uniform temperature distributions within the battery packs than the aligned arrangements.

Cyano group‐containing DOPO derivative for improving the flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and mechanical properties of epoxy resins

AbstractIn order to obtain an efficient flame retardant and smoke suppressor without sacrificing mechanical properties of epoxy resin (EP). A cyano group‐containing 9,10‐dihydro‐9‐oxa‐10‐phosphaphenanthrene‐10‐oxide (DOPO) derivative (CP‐DOPO) was proposed and synthesized through one‐step Atherton–Todd reaction between DOPO and 4‐cyanophenol. The comprehensive performance analysis of CP‐DOPO‐based EP composite was conducted by measuring the flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and mechanical properties. The flame‐retardant test findings shows that the EP/4CP‐DOPO sample achieves UL‐94 V‐0 rating with 4 wt% low addition of CP‐DOPO. Moreover, EP/6CP‐DOPO sample presents a LOI of 36.5%, a 28.1% reduction in the peak heat release rate, and a 42.1% substantial decrease in total smoke production, demonstrating its desirable flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties. Significantly, different from the traditionally additive flame retardants, the mechanical properties of EP matrix will not be affected by the incorporation of CP‐DOPO but a 17.7% increasement of flexural properties compared to EP.
