Risks of generative artificial intelligence in financial intermediation and approaches to their assessment

The subject of the study is the impact of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) on financial intermediation and associated risks. The purpose of the study is to assess the current state of GenAI adoption in financial intermediation, identify potential risks and challenges, and explore the implications of increased use of these technologies. The relevance of the study is due to the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and their increasing impact on financial intermediation, which requires a comprehensive analysis and understanding of possible risks and benefits. The research methodology is based on the study of existing research on this topic,identification of current approaches to identifying risks, empirical analysis, including collection and processing of lists of risks of using GenAI and associated consequences. It is concluded that the variability of definitions in risk assessment GenAIcan create significant obstacles to consistency and coordination of actions between various market participants. Moreover, the lack of unified assessment criteria can lead to underestimation or overestimation of potential threats, which increases the likelihood of system failures and increases risks to the sustainability of the financial intermediation system as a whole.As part of the preparation of the study, responses generated by ChatGPT about the assessment of the risks posed by GenAI were used.

Economic life evaluation of reservoir dams based on comprehensive costs and benefits analysis considering potential dam breach: A case study of the Luhun reservoir in China

The scientific evaluation of a dam’s economic life is necessary to determine its management strategy rationally. However, most studies have mainly focused on analyzing the current economic characteristics of reservoir dams without considering their long-term development trend. And they have failed to incorporate the potential loss caused by dam breaches as one of the operating costs for dams. Consequently, this results in the inability to scientifically calculate the economic life of reservoir dam operations. Therefore, this study analyzed the factors influencing the economic life of reservoir dams in term of safety, costs, benefits and society, and established an economic life evaluation indicator system for reservoir dams. Based on the analyses of costs and benefits of reservoir dams, an economic life evaluation model for reservoir dams was constructed by comprehensively considering the impact of potential dam breaches and the social impact of reservoir dams on the production and lives of local residents. Moreover, based on economic theory, the economics of various types of management measures for reservoir dams and their impact on the economic life of dams were analyzed. The proposed model was applied to the Luhun Reservoir in Henan Province, China, to quantify the comprehensive costs and benefits of its operation for each year after 1990 s, analyze the trend of its “cost-benefit” relationship, and calculate its expected economic life. The results showed that when considering its own risks and social impacts, the expected economic life of the Luhun Reservoir was 74 years. The Luhun Reservoir is expected to operate up to its non-economic life span till 2039. Finally, suggestions for expanding the economic life of dams were proposed. Potential dam breach losses can significantly reduce the economic life of reservoir dams. And risk management measures for reservoir dams should be particularly strengthened during daily operations and management.

Profitability and Financial Feasibility Analysis of Hydroponic Vegetable Business at Bahagia Farm

Purpose: This study aims to explore the profitability and financial feasibility aspects of hydroponic farming. Methodology: The study was conducted at Bahagia Farm, located in Bahagia Village, Babelan District, Bekasi Regency, from May 2023 to June 2023. The Non-Probability Sampling technique with a Saturated Sample (census) approach was used for sample selection. Data collection involved primary information from interviews, direct observations, and original documents, analyzed through profitability and financial feasibility analysis. Results: The results indicate that the farming business is profitable and feasible, with profitability indicators such as a Gross Profit Margin of 75.21% and a Net Profit Margin of 48.83%. Findings: The financial analysis shows a Net Present Value (NPV) above the neutral point at Rp553,272,251, a Net B/C ratio of 2.63, an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 41.82%, and a payback period of 2 years, 4 months, and 18 days. Novelty: This research provides detailed insights into the financial viability and profitability of hydroponic farming, enhancing understanding of its economic potential. Originality: The study offers a comprehensive analysis of economic benefits and financial metrics, contributing to knowledge on sustainable agriculture practices. Enhancing Renewable Energy Accommodation by Coupling Integration Optimization with Flexible Retrofitted Thermal Power Plant

Thermal power units (TPUs) play a crucial role in accommodating the high penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) like wind turbines (WTs) and photovoltaics (PVs). This paper proposes an evaluation framework to quantitatively analyze the flexibility potential of retrofitted TPUs in enhancing the accommodate capability of RESs through coupling integration and optimal scheduling. Firstly, the coordination framework for coupling TPUs with RESs is outlined, including a comprehensive analysis of benefits and implementation strategies. Secondly, an annual optimal scheduling model for TPUs and RESs is developed, incorporating deep peak regulation services, ladder-type constraints for retrofitted TPUs, and their operational characteristics before and after the coupling integration. Thirdly, indices to evaluate RES accommodation levels and TPU regulation capacities are proposed to quantify the performance of power sources. Finally, a real-world case study is conducted to demonstrate that integrating retrofitted TPUs with RESs through coupling significantly enhances RES utilization by 3.6% and boosts TPUs’ downward regulation capabilities by 32%.

Farm tourism, an evolving sector within agriculture, has significantly impacted rural economies by transforming traditional farms into tourist destinations. This research investigated farm tourism practices in Bagabag, Nueva Vizcaya, focusing on evaluating sustainable practices and identifying the benefits and challenges faced by farm operators. The introduction addressed the evolution of farm tourism, emphasizing its role in economic diversification and sustainability. Historical and contemporary examples were highlighted to illustrate the connection between farm tourism and sustainable agricultural practices. The study employed a descriptive research design, incorporating qualitative analysis and thematic data treatment. Observations and interviews with farm owners, stakeholders, and tourists were conducted to capture narratives about farm operations and sustainability practices. This methodology aimed to provide a comprehensive analysis of sustainability challenges and benefits within Bagabag’s farm tourism sector, offering context-specific recommendations for enhancing sustainable practices. The results revealed that farm tourism sites in Bagabag utilized diverse sustainable practices, such as organic farming and crop cycling, which enhanced economic and environmental outcomes. These practices contributed to food security, job creation, and community engagement, while long-term goals focused on self-sufficiency and innovation. Despite successes, the farms faced challenges including fluctuating visitor numbers, management issues, and environmental concerns. The study concluded that integrating sustainable practices was essential for the viability of farm tourism, balancing economic growth with social and environmental responsibilities. Recommendations emphasized the importance of innovation, sustainable practices, and effective management to ensure long-term success and appeal to visitors.

Effects of tomato-Sedum alfredii Hance intercropping on crop production and Cd remediation as affected by soil types.

Intercropping crops with hyperaccumulators is a proven model for coupling crop safety production and soil heavy metal remediation. And both crop genotypes and soil properties might have great impacts on the effect of intercropping. Therefore, a greenhouse pot experiment was designed to investigate the effects of intercropping different tomato varieties with the cadmium (Cd) hyperaccumulator Sedum alfredii Hance (S. alfredii Hance) on different soils. The results showed that intercropping promoted Cd uptake by S. alfredii Hance and reduced soil total Cd concentration. There was no significant effect of intercropping on tomato yield and Cd concentration. Different tomato varieties had different effects on tomato yield and Cd concentration. The yield of cherry tomato was 1.04 times higher than that of common large fruit tomato, while the Cd concentration in all parts was lower than that of common large fruit tomato. Different typical zonal soils had different effects on tomato production and soil remediation. And among the four studied soils, tomatoes grown on ZJ soil had the highest yields and lowest fruit Cd concentration, making them more suitable for remediation coupled with safety production. This study provided a comprehensive analysis of tomato production benefits and soil remediation effects, which could be useful as a guide in vegetable safety production coupled with soil remediation practices in the Cd-contaminated greenhouse.

Impact analysis of a construction and demolition waste dumping quota trading scheme in uncertain, cooperative, and non-cooperative scenarios

Construction and demolition waste (C&DW) has emerged as a significant environmental challenge, demanding urgent attention and innovative solutions. In response, this paper introduces a novel approach, the C&DW Dumping Quota Trading Scheme (CDWTS), and presents an optimization model to gauge its deep-seated implications on construction project investments and environmental pollution mitigation. This model considers both collaborative and non-collaborative interactions among decision-makers and effectively addresses the uncertainties inherent in the evaluation process through a proposed Hybrid Defuzzification Strategy (HDS). The HDS integrates distributed robust optimization, fuzzy set theory with risk-oriented, and sensitivity analysis to attain risk hedging that balances economy and robustness in the assessment and analysis of the CDWTS. Numerical testing of the model using data from Nanjing, China offers valuable perspectives for CDWTS stakeholders. Specifically, the CDWTS serves as a powerful tool for encouraging enterprises to internalize the external costs of pollution, resulting in significant environmental improvements and the promotion of cleaner production processes within the construction industry. Notably, the allotment and pricing of quotas are identified as pivotal factors in optimizing environmental benefits. Future implementations of the CDWTS should prioritize the development of equitable and efficient quota allocation methods while ensuring stability in quota pricing. Furthermore, it's vital to recognize the potential environmental risks associated with collusion among enterprises and the utilization of rudimentary recycling technologies. Thus, it is recommended to augment subsidies for technological investments in the recycling process and to enhance supervision and management of enterprise alliances. In conclusion, unlike prior studies that mainly delved into dissecting CDWTS concepts and designing its framework, this paper conducts a comprehensive analysis of CDWTS's economic and environmental benefits while addressing uncertainties. Policymakers should consider adopting the CDWTS and HDS into their waste management toolkits, as well as fully assessing the potential concerns identified in this study. These tools and insights not only assist the construction industry in moving toward cleaner production on its own, but they also address potential barriers for policymakers on a path to "waste-free cities".

Abstract 14289: Anti-Inflammatory Therapies to Prevent Cardiovascular Events: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Introduction: Anti-inflammatory therapies have been increasingly investigated for the reduction of cardiovascular (CV) events. The goal of this study was to summarize and compare the relative effectiveness of anti-inflammatory medications for the reduction of CV events in a systematic review and network-meta-analysis. Methods: In our systematic review, we included studies from Medline, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, as well as clinical trial registry websites, Europe PMC, and conference abstract hand-searching. Randomized controlled trials were selected for inclusion if they included at least one anti-inflammatory treatment and involved patients with CAD. Bayesian network meta-analyses was performed to calculate risk estimates using random effects analyses in patients with ACS as well as stable CAD for the reduction of MACE. Results: A total of 14,699 studies were screened; sixty-one articles, all randomized control trials, met eligibility criteria for inclusion. A total of 41,647 patients were included in the stable CAD network analysis and 29,388 patients were included in the ACS network analysis. In the ACS analysis, both non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) use (OR: 0.30, 95% Credible Limits [CrI]: 0.11-0.74) and colchicine use were associated with a significant reduction in MACE compared to control (OR: 0.71, 95% Credible Limits [CrI]: 0.58-0.88). In the stable CAD analysis, both corticosteroids (OR: 0.44, 95% CrI: 0.26-0.73) and colchicine (OR: 0.65, 95% Credible Limits [CrI]: 0.54-0.77) were associated with a significant reduction in MACE compared to control. Conclusions: In patients with acute coronary syndromes, NSAIDs and colchicine were associated with a reduction in the risk of major adverse cardiac events. In patients with stable coronary artery disease, both colchicine and steroids were associated with a reduction in the risk of major adverse cardiac events. For a comprehensive analysis of benefits and harms of anti-inflammatory therapies, large comparative studies or network meta-regression analyses of patient-level data will be required. Prefabricated concrete components combination schemes selection based on comprehensive benefits analysis.

In prefabricated buildings, there are numerous types of prefabricated components, forming a complex combination of schemes that are difficult to select. Therefore, this article takes prefabricated components combination schemes as the object. By constructing the evaluation index system through four aspects of assembly rate, cost, duration, and carbon footprint, then using the fuzzy gray correlation projection method to evaluate and select. A residential in Wuhan, China, was enlisted to conduct a case study to show the application of the proposed method. Results indicate that among the six choices, the L scheme is optimal, and the selection order of the prefabricated components in different scenarios is ranked. The results reveal that the method has good applicability, simultaneously provides a reasonable and effective reference for each participant of the assembled building when making scheme comparison, and also provides a new method for the evaluation study of prefabricated component combination schemes.

Co-optimization method research and comprehensive benefits analysis of regional integrated energy system

The nearly-zero energy community composed of contiguously nearly-zero energy buildings can effectively reduce the operational energy consumption of buildings by adopting appropriate active and passive technologies, which is the main development direction of future buildings. However, there are few studies on the collaborative optimization of nearly-zero energy community supply systems. Therefore, a nonlinear cooperative optimization model of the regional integrated energy system with multi-region energy sharing and multi-energy storage is constructed in this paper. A two-layer collaborative optimization method is proposed, which optimizes the upper layer's renewable energy and energy storage capacity and the operation dispatching in the underlayer. Finally, the overall benefit, typical daily energy scheduling, and the energy sharing and storage impact on renewable energy utilization of the system when it supplies energy to a nearly-zero energy community are studied. The research results show that compared with the isolated integrated energy system, the supply cost, primary energy consumption, carbon emission and interactive power per unit area of the regional integrated energy system are reduced by 3.45 CNY/m2, 3.95 kWh/m2, 1.35 kg/m2 and 1.66 kWh/m2, respectively. In addition, multi-region energy sharing and multi-energy storage can effectively improve the self-consumption/sufficiency ratio of photovoltaic and wind power generation and solar thermal collector heat collection. This study provides a feasible solution for applying nearly-zero energy communities in regional integrated energy systems.

Comprehensive Benefit Analysis of Port Shore Power Based on Carbon Trading

The concept of “oil to electricity” is crucial for expanding the share of electricity in final energy consumption as well as for encouraging energy efficiency and emission reduction. Initially, a multidimensional strategy analysis is conducted for the government, ports, and ships concerned. From an economics perspective, a mathematical model of electricity substitution benefit analysis based on multiagent cooperative game theory under cap and trade and carbon tax policies is constructed, and the effect of carbon emissions caused by ships on the environment and society is converted into economic value. How several variables, such as transformation costs, ship electricity consumption, subsidy rates, carbon tax prices, and the ratio of shore power usage time to berthing time, affect the functioning of shore power is analyzed. The best electricity price under various circumstances is determined while considering the benefits of the three parties to maximize social welfare. The reduction in carbon dioxide and pollutant emissions is calculated. Meanwhile, the environmental advantages of the “replacement of oil with electricity” procedure are estimated. An example supports the claim that the suggested modeling approach can successfully resolve the economic benefits of each participant for the period that fosters the growth of electricity replacement projects and offers a sound scientific foundation for the formation of pertinent legislation.

The beneficial role of green bonds as a new strategic asset class: Dynamic dependencies, allocation and diversification before and during the pandemic era

The paper proposes a full comprehensive analysis of green bond diversification benefits, their co-movement with multiple market indices, and the corresponding implications for portfolio allocation. Based on a time frame of seven years, divided into four sub-periods, the co-movements of green-bond indices, i.e. Solactive Green Bond Index and Bloomberg Barclays MSCI Green Bond Index, and the stock/bond market have been described, shedding light on the connections with sectors most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. The Solactive Green Bond Index is found to provide the greater diversification benefit of the two green-bond indices, on average during the seven years and also during the pandemic. Allocation strategies and risk performances have also been analyzed to assess the impact of green-bond indices on otherwise traditional portfolios; their diversification power is discussed by use of traditional measures and an additional behavioral approach, drawing attention to its evolution in time and its consistency in terms of diminished risks and increased returns. Portfolios constructed with the inclusion of green bonds prove preferable in terms of risk, in all periods and for all strategies, while the superiority of returns depends on the allocation strategy.
