Assessment of the ecological state of the composition of surface waters and bottom sediments in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug

The article shows the results of analyzes of surface waters and bottom sediments of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The following rivers were selected as objects: the Ob, the Taz, the Pur, the Yuribei etc. Sampling was carried out near settlements Salekhard, Nadym, Salemal, Pitlyar etc. Water samples were analyzed for the content of: dissolved oxygen, chemical oxygen demand, concentrations of oil products, iron, copper, zinc, nickel, manganese, sulfate ions, bottom sediment samples - for pH values of water extract, content of oil products, sulfates, iron, nickel, chromium, manganese, copper, mercury, lead, zinc, cadmium. Excesses of concentrations of iron, manganese and copper (relative to standard values) were found in most water samples. Elevated levels of petroleum products, lead, chromium, zinc, nickel, iron, manganese and copper (compared to the approved background values) were detected in many bottom sediment samples.

Drinking water aromaticity and treatability is predicted by dissolved organic matter fluorescence

Samples from fifty-five surface water resources and twenty-five drinking water treatment plants in Europe, Africa, Asia, and USA were used to analyse the fluorescence composition of global surface waters and predict aromaticity and treatability from fluorescence excitation emission matrices. Nine underlying fluorescence components were identified in the dataset using parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) and differences in aromaticity and treatability could be predicted from ratios between components Hii (λex/λem= 395/521), Hiii (λex/λem= 330/404), Pi, (λex/λem=290/365) and Pii (λex/λem= 275/302). Component Hii tracked humic acids of primarily plant origin, Hiii tracked weathered/oxidised humics and the “building block” fraction measured by LC-OCD, while Pi and Pii tracked amino acids in the “low molecular weight neutrals” LC-OCD fraction. Ratios between PARAFAC components predicted DOC removal at lab scale for French rivers in standardized tests involving coagulation, powdered activated carbon (PAC), chlorination, ion exchange (IEX), and ozonation, alone and in combination. The ratio Hii/Hiii, for convenience named “PARIX” standing for “PARAFAC index”, predicted SUVA according to a simple relationship: SUVA = 4.0 x PARIX (RMSEp=0.55) Lmg−1m−1. These results expand the utility of fluorescence spectroscopy in water treatment applications, by demonstrating the existence of previously unknown relationships between fluorescence composition, aromaticity and treatability that appear to hold across diverse surface waters at various stages of drinking water treatment.

Aksu Çayı Havzası (Tefenni-Burdur) Su Kaynaklarının Hidrojeokimyasal İncelemesi

Drinking water supply has become an important problem today. In urban areas, drinking water is generally supplied from surface water storages such as dams and ponds. In this study, the hydrogeochemical and quality characteristics of Aksu stream waters, which will feed the dam planned to meet the long-term drinking water needs of Burdur city center, were investigated. Marmaris peridotite and Kızılcadağ melange and olistrochrome crop out in large areas in the Aksu stream basin. It has been determined that the waters in the study area are of MgHCO3 hydrogeochemical facies. The major ion contents of waters were used to define hydrogeochemical processes that control the chemical composition of surface and ground waters. It has been determined that the chemistry of the surface and ground waters in the basin, depending on the rock-water interaction, is affected by both carbonate and silicate weathering processes. The EC value of the spring waters discharged from the study area varies between 460 and 550 μS/cm, and the EC value of the stream waters varies between 460 and 620 μS/cm. The pH value of the water samples is between 8.50 and 8.73. It has been determined that the physical parameters, major ions and trace element contents of the surface and spring waters feeding the Aksu stream do not exceed the drinking water standards of Turkey and the World Health Organization and are suitable for usage as drinking water. Different diagrams and equations were used to evaluate the usability of water as irrigation water. In general, it has been determined that Aksu stream waters are suitable for use for irrigation water, except for the Magnesium Hazard (MT) value. High Mg+2 contents of the waters will have a negative effect when used as irrigation water.

Hydrogeochemistry Characteristics of Groundwater in the Nandong Karst Water System, China

The hydrogeochemical characteristics of groundwater are an important element in the study of the spatial and temporal variation of groundwater resources, which is crucial to water resources utilization, ecological environmental protection, and human development. Water samples were collected at eight observation of Nandong Karst Water System (NKWS) sites in each month of 2019, and the main ions and isotopes of the water samples were examined. The hydrogeochemistry characteristics of groundwater and its differences with surface water were explored by using the methods of multivariate statistics, Gibbs model. Results showed that the water chemistry types of groundwater were mainly HCO3–Ca and HCO3–Ca·Mg. The analysis of hydrogen and oxygen isotope showed that the initial recharge source of surface water and groundwater were atmospheric precipitation, and the measured hydrogen and oxygen isotopes of surface water were heavier due to the strong evaporation effect. The natural and anthropogenic processes contributed to the chemical composition of surface water and groundwater in the study area. However, the main factor affecting the quality of surface water and groundwater was the input of anthropogenic contaminants. In terms of natural factors, the main chemical ions of surface water and groundwater were mainly controlled by water-rock action originating from weathering and hydrolysis of rocks and soils. Ca2+, Mg2+, and HCO3− mainly originated from natural dissolution of carbonate rocks. K+, Na+, SO42−, and Cl− were partly from atmospheric precipitation. For human activities, Na+ and Cl− were partly from domestic water for local residents. SO42− in surface water mainly came from mining. NO3− in groundwater mainly came from chemical fertilizers, and NO3− in surface water were mainly from human waste and domestic sewage.

Effects of river inputs on particulate organic matter composition and distributions in surface waters and sediments of the Mersin Bay, Northeastern Mediterranean Sea

Terrestrial inputs-induced eutrophication in the P-depleted Northeastern (NE) Mediterranean shelf waters has led to changes in particulate organic matter (POM) composition and distributions in the water column and surface sediments. The present study aimed to understand the impacts of terrestrial nutrient and POM inputs on coastal eutrophication, bulk POM composition and concentrations in surface waters and sediments of the Mersin Bay, located at the Cilician Basin of NE Mediterranean Sea. The present results showed that the regional rivers and wastewater discharges markedly increased nutrient concentrations, leading to enhanced eutrophication and POM concentrations surface waters of the Mersin inner bay. The C/N and C/P molar ratios derived from the regressions of POM data in surface waters were 6.92 and 129, respectively. The higher C/N and C/P molar ratios in the surface sediments of productive Mersin Bay indicated selective decay of N, P-containing organic matter buried in muddy sediments. Close positive correlations were found in sediment organic matter and mud contents, indicating the crucial role of fine particles in transport and enrichment of organic matter in the muddy shelf sediments of NE Mediterranean Sea.

Microplastic pollution in urban Lake Phewa, Nepal: the first report on abundance and composition in surface water of lake in different seasons.

Microplastics are man-made pollutants which have been detected in surface water and groundwater. Research on microplastic concentration in aquatic environment is attracting scientists from developing countries, but in Nepal no information regarding microplastic in freshwater system is available. Therefore, this study investigates the presence and abundance of microplastic in lake surface water of Phewa Lake, the second largest lake in Nepal. The average concentration of microplastic for surface water was 2.96 ± 1.83 particles/L in winter (dry) season and 1.51 ± 0.62 particles/L in rainy (wet) season. Significant difference with t = 4.687 (p < 0.01) in microplastic concentration was observed in two different seasons. Fibers (93.04% for winter and 96.69% for rainy season) were the commonly found microplastic type in lake water and transparent as the dominant color for the two seasons. Almost all the detected microplastic were found to be < 1 mm in size. Due to the small size of microplastic and unavailability of micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (μ-FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy in Nepal, polymer identification was not done. The findings from this study can provide a valuable baseline data on microplastics for the first time in Nepal’s freshwater lake environment.Supplementary InformationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s11356-021-18301-9.

Assessing the role of groundwater recharge from tanks in crystalline bedrock aquifers in Karnataka, India, using hydrochemical tracers

The majority of India’s rural drinking water supply is sourced from groundwater, which also plays a critical role in irrigated agriculture, supporting the livelihoods of millions of users. However, recent high abstractions are threatening the sustainable use of groundwater, and action is needed to ensure continued supply. Increased managed aquifer recharge (MAR) using the > 200,000 existing tanks (artificially created surface water bodies) is one of the Indian government’s key initiatives to combat declining groundwater levels. However, few studies have directly examined the effectiveness of tank recharge, particularly in the complex fractured hydrogeology of Peninsular India. To address this gap, this study examined the impact of tanks in three crystalline bedrock catchments in Karnataka, southern India, by analysing the isotopic and hydrochemical composition of surface waters and groundwaters, combined with groundwater level observations. The results indicate that tanks have limited impact on regional groundwater recharge and quality in rural areas, where recharge from precipitation and groundwater recycling from irrigation dominate the recharge signal. In the urban setting (Bengaluru), impermeable surfaces increased the relative effect of recharge from point sources such as tanks and rivers, but where present, pipe leakage from public-water-supply accounted for the majority of recharge. Shallow groundwater levels in the inner parts of the city may lead to groundwater discharge to tanks, particularly in the dry season. We conclude that the importance of aquifer recharge from tanks is limited compared to other recharge sources and highly dependent on the specific setting. Additional studies to quantify tank recharge and revisions to the current guidelines for national groundwater recharge estimations, using a less generalised approach, are recommended to avoid over-estimating the role tanks play in groundwater recharge.

Spatial distributions and risk assessment of heavy metals and PAH in the southwestern Nigeria coastal water and estuaries, Gulf of Guinea

Spatial distributions and risk assessment of heavy metals (HM) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) in water and sediments of two southwestern Nigeria estuaries (Awoye A1-A6 and Abereke: AB1-AB7 and the adjoining coastal waters: I1–I12, C1–C7) were investigated. The physicochemical characteristics were measured in situ, while the HM and PAH were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometer and gas chromatography coupled with flame ionization detection. The physicochemical characteristics of the water body were within the World Health Organization and United State Environmental Protection Agency stipulated limits for coastal water, except for pH (<6) and dissolved oxygen (<5 mg/l) attributed to a high level of human activities at the impacted stations (I1–I12). The HM in the water samples were within the permissible limits for coastal water bodies except for high Pb values (>1 mg/l) at the Awoye estuary linked to point source effluents of petroleum spills from downstream petroleum transportation. The calculated sediment contamination factor (CF) for HM indicated a considerable (3 < CF < 6) contamination of Cu (CF–Cu) at the sampling stations. Whereas the CF-Cr were within the moderate contamination range (1< CF < 3). The pollution load index (PLI) and ecological risk index (RI) suggest low-risk pollution of heavy metals to the aquatic ecosystems. The assessment of PAH revealed a dominant high molecular weight PAH composition in both surface water and sediments, mainly dominated by 4–6 rings PAH. The PAH diagnostic ratio BaA/(Ba + Chry) and IP/(IP + BghiP) points to the mixed (pyrogenic and petrogenic) origin of PAH across the two tropical estuaries and the coastal waters.

Modeling Changes in the Composition of River Water with Discharged Wastewater: A Case Study in NW Russia

The technogenic impact of the development of the Lomonosov diamond deposit is associated with the discharge of quarry and drainage water into the river, which has a special conservation status. Earlier studies on the composition of bottom sediments showed that there are signs of increased accumulation of heavy metals and radionuclides at wastewater discharge sites. The purpose of this work was to predict changes in the composition of surface water and bottom sediment in the river during the further development of mining operations with brackish and salty water captured by drainage systems, the presence of which was established in the zone of their future influence. For this, a simulation of changes in the composition of the water in the river was carried out using the GEOCHEQ software package by minimizing the free energy of the system using a convex simplex algorithm. It was found that the maximum salinity of surface water can reach 1.51 g/L. In this case, the MPC of Cl−, Na+, SO42−, Mg2+, Sr, V, and U can be exceeded for fishery watercourses. The genetic basis of the accumulation of these components in solutions for mixing was considered. According to the calculations, when about 5000 m3/h of drainage water is discharge d into the river, the mass of precipitated chemical elements will be 56–191 t/h, including up to 2.1 t/h of iron; therefore, accumulation in the discharge zone must be controlled.

A method of GIS mapping was developed to identify and assess the contributions of sources of matter to the composition of surface waters. The basis for the creation of the GIS database was the results of the study of the spatial diversity of the chemical composition of surface waters. Geoinformation analysis included the creation of a digital framework for mapping, vectorization of mapping sources and Earth remote sensing materials, creation of a single database combining cartographic, statistical information and field observation materials, morphometric relief analysis based on a digital relief model, creating a landscape basis for base maps, creating thematic maps, analyzing changes in the components of geosystems, creating electronic cartographic layers allowing to identify participation of solute sources in formation of water composition. The analysis of component changes was based on the results of different-time studies of the composition of water and bottom sediments. Based on the comparison of the chemical composition of the waters of the Baikal tributaries with the chemical and mineralogical composition of rocks, an approach was developed to identify sources of solute and assess their contributions to the formation of macro- and microelement compositions of surface waters. To solve the problems of the study, methods of statistical analysis of data, multicomponent mixing using systems of linear equations, field methods of data collection were used. Three main categories of solute sources (silicate, sulfide-containing silicate, carbonate rocks) were identified and their contributions to the chemical composition of water were calculated. On the basis of microelement tracers, the contributions of silicate rocks were divided into contributions of primary and secondary silicate rocks, ore-containing silicate rocks without sulfides were isolated. By comparing the ratios of concentrations of trace elements in the waters of uncontaminated territories and wastewater of enterprises, tracers were identified that made it possible to identify sources of surface water pollution. Maps of territories that determine a certain chemical composition of surface waters were compiled, which was first classified on the basis of the ratio of the contributions of drained rocks.

The environmental fate of metals from zinc and lead mining area in surface water (Przemsza River, southern Poland)

The chemical composition of surface waters of the Przemsza River flowing through Upper Silesia (in southern Poland) is strongly affected by Zn and Pb ore, and less by Carboniferous hard coal deposits. The chemical type of surface water is Ca-HCO3. In the waters, three groups of metals and metalloids were found that directly interfere with the mineralization of the deposit. Although genetically related to the same deposit, each group exhibits a different fate in the environment. A typical deposit association is Pb-Zn-Ag-As-Sb-Hg. The first group of metals in surface waters is consistent with the typical association of the ore Zn-Pb-Cd-(Tl), the second includes Ag-Sb-Hg, and the third includes the additives in the zinc and lead ore Co-Ni-Mo-Mn:[(Ca↔Na)+(HCO3↔Cl)]+[(Zn-Pb-Cd-(Tl))+(Ag-Sb-Hg)+Co-Ni-Mo-Mn)].Depending on the pH-Eh conditions, metals and metalloids precipitate out of the solution or sorb on solid particles. The concentrations of individual groups of metals are interdependent but show different environmental fates along the river course. The natural process of the enrichment of surface waters with Zn-Pb-Cd-(Tl) is by water circulation in a rock matrix naturally rich in the metals and draining groundwaters by the river. Under oxidizing and slightly alkaline conditions, Ag-Sb-Hg incorporated into the soluted chemical compounds, may, when the physicochemical parameters of the waters change, be adsorbed and/or precipitated. The presence and ratio of concentrations of Co-Ni-Mo-Mn with respect to zinc are almost identical, differing only in concentration.

Understanding upper water mass dynamics in the Gulf of Mexico by linking physical and biogeochemical features

In the Gulf of Mexico (GoM), the upper 300 m of the water column contains a mixture of water types derived from water masses from the North Atlantic and the Caribbean Sea, namely Caribbean Surface Water (CSW), Subtropical Underwater (SUW), Gulf Common Water (GCW), and Tropical Atlantic Central Water (TACW). These are mainly altered by mesoscale processes and local evaporation, which modulate biogeochemical cycles. In this study, we improve our understanding of water mass dynamics by including biogeochemical data when evaluating the T-S relationship to define water-mass boundaries, particularly when the observed thermohaline characteristics overlap. The variables considered were apparent oxygen utilization (AOU), nitrate, and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). The data were obtained from eight cruises carried out in the central and southern regions of the GoM and an additional cruise that covered the entire coastal-ocean region. The new proposed boundaries were instrumental in clarifying the dynamics of surface waters. Of note, GCW on the western side of the GoM is not formed from the mixing of CSW and SUW but by the mixing of remnant CSW with TACW. In winter, a remnant of CSW mixed with GCW, and the biogeochemical composition of surface waters was affected, as observed from an increase in nitrate and DIC concentrations and positive AOU values. CSW was mainly detected at the surface during summer with negative AOU values, low DIC values, and almost undetectable nitrate concentrations. The presence or absence of CSW modulated the depth of the nitracline and likely influenced primary productivity.

Effect of solar radiation on natural organic matter composition in surface waters and resulting impacts on drinking water treatment

ABSTRACT Solar radiation experiments showed a shift in the composition of natural organic matter (NOM). Due to irradiation, the concentration of high molecular weight (HMW) molecules decreased, and that of the low molecular weight (LMW) fraction increased. Microbiological analyses showed that biodegradation was neglectable. To assess the consequences for water treatment processes, coagulation jar tests were performed by comparing the removal effectivity for NOM fractions from irradiated and unirradiated raw water. The degree of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal by coagulation was lower for irradiated waters. As primarily HMW organic compounds are removed by coagulation, the decrease in coagulation performance is attributed to the increase in the LMW concentration due to photochemical reactions induced by solar radiation. Flocs were about 15% larger for irradiated water. Possibilities to adapt water treatment to respond to changes in DOC composition and concentration are outlined. Ozonation–biofiltration is judged as the most promising treatment process to cope with climate change-related challenges in drinking water treatment.

Degradation of Neonicotinoids and Caffeine from Surface Water by Photolysis.

Along with rapid social development, the use of insecticides and caffeine-containing products increases, a trend that is also reflected in the composition of surface waters. This study is focused on the phototreatment of a surface water containing three neonicotinoids (imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, and clothianidin) and caffeine. Firstly, the radiation absorption of the target pollutants and the effect of the water matrix components were evaluated. It was observed that the maximum absorption peaks appear at wavelengths ranging from 246 to 274 nm, and that the water matrix did not affect the efficiency of the removal of the target pollutants. It was found that the insecticides were efficiently removed after a very short exposure to UV irradiation, while the addition of hydrogen peroxide was needed for an efficient caffeine depletion. The electrical energy per order was estimated, being the lowest energy required (9.5 kWh m−3 order−1) for the depletion of thiamethoxan by indirect photolysis, and a concentration of hydrogen peroxide of 5 mg dm−3. Finally, a preliminary evaluation on the formation of by-products reveals that these compounds play a key role in the evolution of the ecotoxicity of the samples, and that the application of direct photolysis reduces the concentration of these intermediates.

Prokaryotic community and diversity in coastal surface waters along the Western Antarctic Peninsula

Identifying microorganisms and defining the community compositions are important for better understanding of the marine ecosystem and biochemical cycles. This study describes microbial community compositions of coastal surface waters of the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP). The V3–V4 regions of 16S rRNA genes were PCR-amplified, and sequencing libraries were constructed to characterize the microbial community. A total of 157 bacteria species were identified and classified into 6 phyla, 50 families, and 91 genera. Whereas only two Archaea taxa of Crenarchaeota and Euryarchaeota, the first report from surface water of the WAP in summer, were identified. Our data showed a prevalence of ubiquitous bacterial phyla of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes. The dominant bacterial families across all water samples were mostly affiliated with Pseudoalteromonadaceae, and followed by Rhodobacteraceae, Moraxellaceae, and Flavobacteriaceae, which collectively accounted for almost 94% of all the generated sequences. Taxonomic compositions of the sampling sites were similar. However, the relative abundances of bacterial families were considerably varied. Bacterial communities in polar marine environments show strong spatial and temporal variation.

Potassium and its isotope behaviour during chemical weathering in a tropical catchment affected by evaporite dissolution

This work presents the systematic investigation of K contents and stable K isotopic compositions of surface waters, groundwater, wastewaters, suspended particles, bed sediments, and fertilizers in the Upper Mun Rive catchment, northeast Thailand. This area is of particular interest because its abundant potash deposits and intensive agricultural activities and urbanization, therefore this will improve our understanding whether the K isotope is robust enough to resist evaporite dissolution and anthropogenic disturbances on tracing silicate weathering in the highly weathered tropical region. The dissolved loads in surface waters and shallow groundwater display the large variation in δ41Kdiss values from −0.54‰ to +0.09‰ relative to suspended particles (−0.60‰ to −0.41‰), river bed sediments (−0.54‰ to −0.47‰), the upper continental crust (UCC, −0.44 ± 0.05‰), which agrees with the fact that 39K is preferentially retained in weathering products during silicate weathering. The wet and dry seasons difference ranging from −0.05‰ to +0.10‰ δ41K, which is slightly greater than our long-term analytical uncertainty of ±0.06‰. There is likely a limited K input from evaporites dissolution due to weak correlation between δ41Kdiss values and Cl concentrations or Cl/K ratios in the UMR and world rivers, while a major tributary Takhong River is clearly influenced by the contribution of domestic sewage with lower δ41K and higher δ15N values. Based on a mass balance of K budge, the dissolved K in the UMR is mostly (>90%) derived from silicate weathering in the unpolluted area, this is consistent with previous studies of large river basins, and the evaporite dissolution and other non-silicate sources may not strongly influence dissolved K and δ41Kdiss values in rivers, even in evaporite-rich catchment. Therefore, K isotopes cannot be used as lithological tracers in catchments, rather the K isotopic fractionation mainly occurs during silicate weathering, such as the formation of secondary minerals which favor light isotope. Hence, the mechanism of K isotopic fractionation linked to secondary minerals K uptake needs further consideration. Overall, these results clearly show that K isotopes could be an ideal indicator to constrain silicate weathering processes and anthropogenic inputs at catchment scale.

Spatial Hydrochemical Characteristics and Controlling Factors of Surface Water in the Yancheng Area

Surface water resources are crucial to economic development in China's eastern coastal areas. Under the influence of intense human activities, problems such as abnormal water quality and pollution are very prominent. Here, the chemical composition of surface waters and their controlling factors were analyzed in the Yancheng area. The results showed that:① The surface water pH is low and the concentrations of total dissolved solids(TDS) are high in the study area. pH is likely controlled by the acidic organic pollutants discharged by human activities as well as acidic substances formed by anaerobic decomposition in soils. TDS data showed low values in the west and high values in the east, and low values in north and high south of the study region. ② Cation content was dominated by Na+, anions were dominated by HCO3- and Cl-, and, overall, hydrochemical composition was controlled by HCO3-(Ca+Na), although there was significant variability between the different regions. ③ Because the silt layer in the region is mainly composed of clay, subclay, and sandstone, the soluble matter in surface water is mainly derived from the decomposition of Na-feldspar in silicate debris via carbonation, supplemented by carbonation. Due to the low-lying terrain and high groundwater level in the tidal flat area, solutes are significantly affected by evaporation-driven concentration alongside evaporite weathering replenishment. ④ Although the surface waters in different regions were found to be affected by human activities to varying degrees, the impact was always strong. In particular, in areas of tidal wetland expansion, water quality is not only affected by urban sewage and agricultural irrigation but also industrial wastewater discharge.

Impact of the mining industry on surface waters in the Arctic zone of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)

The article presents the results of hydrochemical studies of northern rivers of the Arctic zone of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). It was revealed that the background hydrochemical composition of surface waters in the study area is diverse: from hydrocarbonate-sodium waters in the North-West and hydrocarbonate-sulphate waters in the North-East of Yakutia. During the study of the microelement composition of surface waters in the Arctic zone, high concentrations of total iron, manganese, and copper are found everywhere, indicating their natural origin. In places where groundwater influence is observed we found that the characteristic elements are lithium, strontium and barium. Analysing the research results, we can say that each mining enterprise has its own specific effect on surface waters, which makes its own adjustments to the chemical composition of surface waters.

Typhoon-induced turbulence redistributed microplastics in coastal areas and reformed plastisphere community

The increasing microplastic pollution together with the plastisphere-associated ecological threats in coastal areas have aroused global concern. Tropical cyclones have been increased in both frequency and intensity under global warming, causing intense impact on the microplastics distribution and the structure of coastal ecosystems. However, until most currently, the extent to which typhoon impacts the microplastics and plastisphere community remains poorly known. This study analyzed the effects of Typhoon Wipha (Code: 1907) on microplastics abundance and composition in surface water and sediment crossed coastal areas of Shenzhen. Here we found a significant typhoon-induced increase in microplastics abundance in surface water, whereas an opposite trend was observed in sediment. Despite the evident transportation of microplastics from sediment to surface water by agitation, a possible microplastics influx was introduced by typhoon as evidenced by the large attribution of unknown force in source tracking analysis. Furthermore, typhoon had adeptly uniformed the plastisphere community in the sediment along the 190 km costal line overnight. A significant increase of nitrogen fixer, Bradyrhizobiaceae, was observed ubiquitously after typhoon, which might alter the nitrogen cycling and increase eutrophic condition of the coastal ecological system. Together, this study expanded the knowledge about the impact of typhoon-induced influx of the microplastics on coastal biogeochemical cycling. Moreover, the microplastics and the plastisphere compositional pattern revealed here will underpin future studies on adsorption behavior, interfacial processes and ecotoxicity of the coastal microplastic pollution.
