Mean contents of volatile components, major and trace elements in magmatic melts from main geodynamic settings of the earth. II. Silicic melts

As a continuation of our previous study, we estimated the mean contents of volatile, major, and trace components in silicic (>66 wt % SiO2) magmatic melts from main terrestrial geodynamic settings on the basis of our database, which includes (as of middle 2017) more than 1 500 000 determination of 75 elements in melt inclusions and quench glasses from rocks. Among the geodynamic settings are those related to subduction processes (III, island-arc zones originated on oceanic crust and IV, magmatic zones of active continental margins, where continental crust is involved in magma formation) and intracontinent rift and continental hot-spot regions (V). For each geodynamic setting, we calculated the mean contents of elements with confidence limits separately for melt inclusions and groundmass glasses and for the entire data set. Systematic differences were found between the mean compositions of melt inclusions and groundmass glasses from these geodynamic settings. Primitive mantle normalized spider diagrams were constructed for all geodynamic settings. Some ratios of elements and volatile components (H2O/Ce, K2O/Cl, La/Yb, Nb/U, Ba/Rb, Ce/ Pb, etc.) in silicic and mafic melts were compared. Variations in the ratios of various elements to Th, which is one of the most incompatible elements in silicic and mafic melts, were discussed.

Dehydration of melt inclusions in olivine and implications for the origin of silica-undersaturated island-arc melts

Primary subduction-related magmas build up modern continental crust and counterbalance massive recycling of crustal material into the deep mantle occurring at this tectonic setting. Melt inclusions in Mg-rich olivine are believed to be the best probes of primary subduction-related melts. However, unexpectedly, most of such inclusions are SiO2-undersaturated, in contrast to predominantly SiO2-saturated island-arc rocks. The origin of these melts has been explained by melting of amphibole-bearing pyroxenites in the lower crust or upper mantle. The current models fail, however, to explain the high abundance of SiO2-undersaturated melts as well as their compositional difference with host rocks for the major elements but not for incompatible trace elements. Here we report results from the investigation of rocks and melt inclusions in olivine from Klyuchevskoy volcano in Kamchatka. We show that experimental re-hydration of SiO2-undersaturated melt inclusions in olivine Fo85−90 at 300 MPa pressure and 1200°C causes a concomitant enrichment of melt in H2O and SiO2 so that re-hydrated inclusions (4–5 wt% H2O) become as silica-saturated as primitive Klyuchevskoy rocks. An experimental dehydration of previously re-hydrated inclusions also resulted in coupled depletion of melt in H2O and SiO2. The estimated stoichiometry of SiO2 and H2O gain/loss is consistent with dissolution/crystallization of metal-defect olivine on inclusion walls. The migration mechanism of water is controlled by hydrogen diffusion in the octahedral metal (Mg, Fe) vacancies through olivine structure as confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. We conclude that the previously reported SiO2-undersaturated composition of many melt inclusions from hypersthene-normative island-arc rocks can be explained by the coupled loss of up to several weight percent of H2O and SiO2 from the initially trapped primitive SiO2-saturated hydrous melts. Thus, SiO2-undersaturated melt inclusions may not be representative of primitive island-arc magmas. The discovery of the coupled SiO2 and H2O loss from inclusions allowed us to propose a method for reconstruction of the initial water content even for completely dehydrated inclusions. The results of this study may indicate that the majority of primitive island-arc inclusions have not preserved their initial H2O content, and that primary arc melts contain on average ≥4 wt% H2O. The higher H2O concentration in primary arc melts implies the existence of a ‘crustal filter’ controlling the water content, which can be preserved in melt inclusions, and also the lower mantle melting temperatures and higher output H2O fluxes in subduction zones than previously estimated based on direct determination of H2O in potentially dehydrated melt inclusions.

Magma interactions, crystal mush formation, timescales, and unrest during caldera collapse and lateral eruption at ocean island basaltic volcanoes (Piton de la Fournaise, La Réunion)

The dynamics of magmatic processes at large mafic ocean island volcanoes control the likely locations (central caldera versus flanks) and timing of their eruptions. Crystals and their melt inclusions are key witnesses of these processes but are rarely studied in detail and in the same samples. Here we report the crystal and melt inclusion compositions of the April 2007 caldera-forming eruption of Piton de la Fournaise volcano and discuss how they relate to geophysical unrest monitoring data. Olivine crystals show mainly normal zoning (decrease in Mg/Fe) towards the rims, and also around some melt inclusions. Many crystals also show fine-scale skeletal structures defined by high phosphorus concentrations. Melt inclusions contain 53–205 ppm CO2 and 0.25–1.1 wt% H2O, and δD (δD values expressed as δDVSMOW) ranges from −135 to 62‰. Monitoring data show that inflation of the edifice started about a month before the first 2007 eruption: magma intrusion occurred at ≈3 km below sea level, and quickly migrated towards shallower depths (about 1 km above sea level). Such a time frame of magma movement is recorded in the chemical zoning of the olivine crystals that massively and quickly crystallized when reaching shallow depth, without significant interactions between resident and intruding magmas. The intrusion was followed by lateral flank eruption and caldera collapse. The chemical zoning of the olivine crystal rims and around the melt inclusions indicates that the newly created crystal-mush moved laterally towards the surface in matter of days to 3 months. Post-caldera samples show significant H+ loss, likely due to the depressurization of the magmatic system stored at shallow level. Our findings are different from other mafic ocean island volcanoes or stratovolcanoes (e.g. Kilauea, Canary Islands, and Etna), where crystals commonly record magma mixing between evolved and shallow melts and intruding mafic melts. We speculate that the difference between our findings and those of similar mafic ocean island volcanoes is due to the variety of magma supply rates from depth.

Mean Concentrations of Volatile Components and of Major and Trace Elements in Magmatic Melts of the Dominant Geodynamic Settings of the Earth. II. Silicic Melts

Continuing our earlier publication, this paper presents estimates (based on our database, which included more than 1 500 000 analyses of melt inclusions and chilled glasses of rocks for 75 elements, as of 2017) of the mean concentrations of volatile, major, and trace elements in silicic magmatic rocks (SiO2 > 66 wt %) in the Earth’s dominant geodynamic setting. Three settings were examined for silicic compositions: III and IV are settings related to subduction processes (III are zones of island-arc magmatism on the oceanic crust; and IV are zones of magmatism in active continental margins, with magma-generating regions involving continental crust), and V is continental rifts and continental hotspots. For each geodynamic setting, mean concentrations of the elements and confidence levels are first calculated in three variants: for mineral-hosted melt inclusions, for chilled glasses in rocks, and for all available data. Systematic differences are determined for the mean compositions of melt inclusions and glasses in rocks for these geodynamic settings. Patterns of primitive mantle-normalized mean concentrations of elements in magmatic melts are constructed for each of the settings. The ratios of some of the elements and volatile compounds (H2O/Ce, K2O/Cl, La/Yb, Nb/U, Ba/Rb, Ce/Pb, etc.) are compared in silicic and mafic melts. Variations in the ratios of the concentrations of Th, one of the most incompatible elements, to other elements in silicic and mafic rocks are discussed.

Reequilibration Processes Occurring in Plagioclase‐Hosted Melt Inclusions From Plagioclase Ultraphyric Basalts

AbstractPlagioclase‐hosted melt inclusions are infrequently used to investigate magmatic processes owing to the perception that they are less robust than olivine‐hosted inclusions. Based on a set of time series experiments ranging from 30 min to 4 days, we demonstrate that plagioclase‐hosted melt inclusions can preserve the original (primitive) magmatic signal if steps are taken to correct for post entrapment crystallization. Diffusion within plagioclase‐hosted melt inclusions is sufficiently fast that the melt inclusions can be homogenized within 30 min through heating experiments. As heating time increases, the composition of melt inclusions drifts. We attribute this longer‐term phenomenon to plastic deformation of the host plagioclase (crystal relaxation) inducing a decrease in the internal pressure in the melt inclusion combined with diffusion of elements across the host/melt inclusion interface. The rate of chemical reequilibration within melt inclusions is limited by the much slower rate of diffusion within the solid host. Indeed, the host/melt inclusion partition coefficient for MgO decreases by 25% from the 30‐min to the 4‐day experiments. Our results suggest that the primary character of plagioclase‐hosted melt inclusions can be recovered if one recognizes and corrects for the effects of the complex physical and chemical processes that occur during melt inclusion homogenization.

New constraints on archetypal South African kimberlite petrogenesis from quenched glass-rich melt inclusions in olivine megacrysts

The evaluation of primary kimberlite compositions is hindered by significant melt modifications during ascent through the lithosphere by entrainment of xenolithic material, volatile degassing, and near surface alteration. Consequently, hypabyssal kimberlite emplaced in the upper crust may not provide a true reflection of the primary kimberlite magma. This contribution places new constraints on kimberlite melt composition by providing an assessment of quenched glass-rich polymineralic melt inclusions hosted in olivine megacrysts from the Monastery kimberlite, South Africa. Melt inclusions predominantly contain variable proportions of euhedral or skeletal grains of calcite, phlogopite, spinel, perovskite, serpentine, and fresh to devitrified glass. Estimates of the bulk compositions of melt inclusions, and the compositions of crystalline phases present therein, are compatible to those of hypabyssal kimberlites worldwide and show a volatile-rich (CO2 + H2O ~10–17 wt%) carbonated silicate (SiO2 ~27–41 wt%) composition. The glass component has a Si-Mg-Fe-rich and largely CaO-, K2O- and TiO2-free major element composition and is REE-depleted. It also contains approximately 10 wt% H2O but is CO2−free. The glass represents a residual melt that existed after crystallization of the observed mineral assemblage. From some, but not all melt inclusions, apophyses radiate outwards. These fractures typically contain partially devitrified glass that is compositionally identical to the fresh residual glass within the melt inclusions, indicating fracture formation during decompression of the hosting megacryst and at a stage after the melt had evolved. These features are consistent with a trapping of the melt inclusions at high pressure, prior to kimberlite ascent to the surface, in the SCLM at a depth corresponding to 4.5–6 GPa. Textures and compositions of phases within the melt inclusions represent stages of the kimberlite melt and magma evolution. They provide evidence in support of high-pressure experimental studies suggesting a carbonated silicate primary melt rather than a carbonatite. Furthermore, the composition of fresh glass in the melt inclusions, which is compositionally similar to serpentine, suggests that much groundmass serpentine in hypabyssal kimberlites may have formed from similar silicate melt or devitrified glass.

Deep pre-eruptive storage of silicic magmas feeding Plinian and dome-forming eruptions of central and northern Dominica (Lesser Antilles) inferred from volatile contents of melt inclusions

Volatiles contribute to magma ascent through the sub-volcanic plumbing system. Here, we investigate melt inclusion compositions in terms of major and trace elements, as well as volatiles (H2O, CO2, SO2, F, Cl, Br, S) for Quaternary Plinian and dome-forming dacite and andesite eruptions in the central and the northern part of Dominica (Lesser Antilles arc). Melt inclusions, hosted in orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and plagioclase are consistently rhyolitic. Post-entrapment crystallisation effects are limited, and negligible in orthopyroxene-hosted inclusions. Melt inclusions are among the most water-rich yet recorded (≤ 8 wt% H2O). CO2 contents are generally low (< 650 ppm), although in general the highest pressure melt inclusion contain the highest CO2. Some low-pressure (< 3 kbars) inclusions have elevated CO2 (up to 1100–1150 ppm), suggestive of fluxing of shallow magmas with CO2-rich fluids. CO2-trace element systematics indicate that melts were volatile-saturated at the time of entrapment and can be used for volatile-saturation barometry. The calculated pressure range (0.8–7.5 kbars) indicates that magmas originate from a vertically-extensive (3–27 km depth) storage zone within the crust that may extend to the sub-Dominica Moho (28 km). The vertically-extensive crustal system is consistent with mush models for sub-volcanic arc crust wherein mantle-derived mafic magmas undergo differentiation over a range of crustal depths. The other volatile range of composition for melt inclusions from the central part is F (75–557 ppm), Cl (1525–3137 ppm), Br (6.1–15.4 ppm) and SO2 (< 140 ppm), and for the northern part it’s F (92–798 ppm), Cl (1506–4428 ppm), Br (not determined) and SO2 (< 569; one value at 1015 ppm). All MIs, regardless of provenance, describe the same Cl/F correlation (8.3 ± 2.7), indicating that the magma source at depth is similar. The high H2O content of Dominica magmas has implications for hazard assessment.

Reduced Fluids and Sulfide–Metal Alloy in the Magnesian Basalts of Disko Island, West Greenland

This paper presents the results of a combined study of the composition and physical properties of fluid, melt and opaque mineral inclusions in olivine phenocrysts and glass from the magnesian basalt of Disko I., West Greenland. The rock is dominated by glass, which contains numerous fluid bubbles and large (up to 250 μm) opaque globules. The thermometric investigation of the melt inclusions showed that the temperature of olivine crystallization was no higher than 1220°C at a pressure of 0.15–0.20 GPa. The opaque globules in the groundmass glass have a eutectoid structure and are composed of troilite, Fe–Ni metal alloy, and sparse grains of wustite and cohenite (Fe3C). Cryometric measurements and Raman spectroscopy indicated a complex fluid composition and presence of reduced and oxidized gases: CH4, N2, H2, CO2, and H2O, as well as highly ordered graphite. The nonequilibrium association of compounds in the fluid is related to the rapid cooling (quenching) of crystallizing magma preventing the equilibration of the gas system. At an estimated logfO2 value of –13.95, methane is the only hydrocarbon phase that can exist at magmatic temperatures. The formation of organic substances detected in some gas bubbles in the groundmass glasses of the rock occurred at postmagmatic stages after a significant decrease in temperature.

Evaluation of the petrogenetic significance of melt inclusions in pegmatitic schorl-dravite from graphic tourmaline-quartz assemblages: Application of LA-ICP-QMS analyses and volume ratio calculations

The composition of melt inclusions in tourmaline was studied from graphic quartz-tourmaline intergrowth assemblages of common, muscovite – rare-element class pegmatites belonging to the lithium-caesium-tantalum family. This study applied laser ablation inductively coupled quadrupole mass spectrometry in combination with 2D and 3D microscopic volume calculation to analyse these unhomogenised melt inclusions. The determination of the analytical precision of the method is performed by repeated microscope-scanning and laser ablation analyses of tourmaline mineral inclusions in muscovite hosts for which the compositions have been independently measured by electron microprobe.The analysed melt inclusions are hosted in schorl-dravite series tourmaline from the early-Neoproterozoic pegmatite dykes of the Gatumba-Gitarama field in Rwanda. Multiple dykes have been studied, representing three regional pegmatite zones showing an increasing bulk regional degree of differentiation. The sampled graphic quartz-tourmaline assemblages are the only manifestation of an internal mineralogical zonation within these pegmatite dykes.The melt inclusions dominantly contain muscovite, quartz, dickite, feldspars, jeremejevite and childrenite minerals and variable amounts of Cs-rich, interstitial fluid. The major element composition of the ablated melt inclusions is variable but mainly plot on the low Ca-granitic compositional trend. The inclusions show, moreover, a significantly higher normative quartz content compared to bulk pegmatitic rock counterparts. The melt inclusions demonstrate a near-constant Rb concentration (100 up to 160 ppm) whereas Cs concentrations vary between 10 and 1000 ppm. Although Rb and Cs enrichment trends are accurate proxies to deduce pegmatite melt differentiation in general, both the Rb and Cs concentrations of the melt inclusions are remarkably unrelated to the regional degree of differentiation deduced from the constituent bulk rock and rock-forming minerals of the Gatumba-Gitarama pegmatites. A comparison of the alkali metal content of melt inclusions and cogenetic fluid inclusions with previously modelled bulk melt concentration indicates that this deviating Rb and Cs behaviour is caused by heterogeneous trapping of variable portions of the Cs-enriched aqueous fluid phase together with the residual melt and this during melt inclusion formation.The melt inclusions in tourmaline represent local and residual, hydrous boro-aluminosilicate melt compositions. The formation of graphic intergrowths inside the pegmatite dykes indicates rapid tourmaline growth rates causing in turn quartz saturation and nucleation in the surrounding residual melt. Fast tourmaline crystallisation contributed directly to the formation of these “melt pools” with distinct residual compositions. Our study shows that already for less-differentiated common pegmatites, melt inclusions from internal mineralogical zones represent closed melt subsystems that cannot be directly linked to the bulk system. These findings imply, moreover, that the use of tourmaline trace element compositions as an indirect geochemical proxy for the bulk melt composition of pegmatites and evolved granites, has to be considered with caution.

Effect of redox conditions on the evolution of magmas of Changbaishan Tianchi volcano, China–North Korea

In this paper we use data on composition of melt, fluid, and crystal inclusions in minerals to reconstruct the compositions and formation conditions of the parental melts for the trachybasalts, trachybasaltic andesites, comendites, and pantellerites of Changbaishan Tianchi (Paektusan) volcano on the border of China and North Korea. The melts crystallized within broad temperature and pressure ranges of 1200–700 °C and 3100–1000 bar. The redox conditions expressed as ΔNNO are +0.9 to +1.4 log units for the basalt melts, −1.6 to −2.1 log units for the trachybasaltic andesite melts, −2.6 to −1.9 log units for the comendite melts, and −1.6 to −3.2 log units for the pantellerite melts. All melts are rich in alkalis and FeO. The sulfur contents of the mafic melts vary from 0.06 to 0.13 wt%. The pantellerite melts are sulfur-free, but the groundmass of the pantellerites contain pyrite crystals. Mafic melts have a range in water contents from 0.1–1.0 wt%. The H2O contents of the comendite melts vary from 3.7 to 4.8 wt%, and the pantellerite melts contain 0.2–0.6 wt% H2O. It has been revealed that the magma crystallization was accompanied by changes in oxygen fugacity caused by the decompression of the magma chamber beneath Changbaishan Tianchi volcano. Such decompression resulted in open-system crystal fractionation during magma degassing. We propose that the degassing is responsible for variations in water and sulfur contents in the melts. As the pressure decreases, the gas phases become progressively enriched in H2O and S, and the S oxidation state is changed from S2− to S4+. Sulfur degassing in the form of SO2 at decompression and spinel precipitation during open-system magmatic differentiation resulted in melt reduction.

Copper and Li diffusion in plagioclase, pyroxenes, olivine and apatite, and consequences for the composition of melt inclusions

Silicate melt inclusions are an important tool to reconstruct original concentrations of volatiles and metals in silicate melts, as these constituents are partly lost during magma solidification. However, melt inclusions analyzed in co-precipitated minerals in volcanic rocks commonly show strongly divergent Cu contents, raising doubts about the validity of their composition. To understand the origin of this divergence a multiple approach was followed. First, the phenomenon was documented by recording petrographic details of five volcanic samples and analyzing 189 melt inclusions by laser-ablation ICP-MS. Second, diffusion experiments on gem-quality plagioclase, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, apatite and olivine were performed in a gas mixing furnace to constrain diffusion coefficients of Cu and to a lesser extent of Li. Third, re-equilibration experiments were performed on melt inclusions within plagioclase crystals to induce changes in their Cu and Li contents.The LA-ICP-MS analyses reveal that plagioclase-hosted and orthopyroxene-hosted melt inclusions in volcanic rocks commonly contain an order of magnitude more Cu than melt inclusions in co-precipitated clinopyroxene and olivine. Plagioclase-hosted melt inclusions in intrusive rocks, on the other hand, do not show this divergence. The diffusion experiments conducted on minerals find that Cu and Li diffusion in plagioclase is extremely fast (log D = −13.0 to −11.5 m2 s−1 at 1000 °C) and in both cases occurs via two separate diffusion mechanisms. Copper diffusion coefficients in apatite, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene and olivine are 2–3 orders of magnitude lower but are still high compared to most other elements. Both the re-equilibration experiments on melt inclusions and quantitative modeling based on the measured diffusion coefficients demonstrate that at 1000 °C plagioclase-hosted melt inclusions can re-equilibrate their Cu and Li content with that of the surrounding magma within a few hours to a few weeks, whereas apatite-, clinopyroxene-, orthopyroxene- and olivine-hosted melt inclusions require tens of years to hundreds of years to do so. Abnormally high Cu contents of plagioclase- and orthopyroxene-hosted melt inclusions appear to result from postentrapmental Cu gain. In the case of orthopyroxene-hosted melt inclusions Cu seems to have been gained as a consequence of postentrapmental sidewall crystallization, which triggered the formation of sulfide globules that acted as a Cu sink. This process likely occurred at depth in magma chambers. Plagioclase-hosted melt inclusions, on the other hand, seem to have gained Cu in exchange for hydrogen that diffused out of the melt inclusions during or after volcanic eruption. Our results suggest that Cu (and also Li) concentrations measured in melt inclusions have to be generally treated with caution, and that particular prudence has to be used in the case of plagioclase and orthopyroxene hosts.

Constraining magma sources using primitive olivine-hosted melt inclusions from Puñalica and Sangay volcanoes (Ecuador)

Constraining arc magma sources at continental arc settings is a delicate task, because chemical signatures from crustal processes obscure the slab and mantle signatures. Here, we present major, trace, and volatile element compositions of olivine-hosted melt inclusions (Fo82–89) selected from the most primitive lavas (Mg# > 60) from two Ecuadorian volcanoes (Punalica and Sangay) situated at the southern termination of the Andean Northern Volcanic Zone. Melt inclusions (MI) from Punalica are nepheline normative and have basaltic-to-basaltic-andesite compositions (45–56 wt% SiO2) similar to peridotite-derived melts. Sangay MI is also nepheline normative, with high CaO (up to 16 wt% and CaO/Al2O3 < 1) and low silica contents (41.9–44.5 wt%) pointing out an amphibole-bearing clinopyroxenite source. Both volcanoes display volatile-rich compositions (up to 6100 ppm Cl, 2200 ppm F, and 6700 ppm S). These MI cannot be related to their host lavas by fractional crystallization, implying that they represent true primitive liquids. The source of Punalica MI was metasomatized by slab-derived melts that imprints its low Ba/Th, Sr/Th, and high Th/La (average values of 66, 129, and 0.22, respectively). On the contrary, the slab component added to the source of Sangay MI has a higher Ba/Th, Sr/Th, and low Th/La (average values of 261, 517, and 0.11, respectively) which could suggest a relative contribution of aqueous fluids. This dichotomy is related to the presence of the Grijalva Fracture Zone that separates a younger and hotter oceanic crust to the north (below Punalica) from a colder and older oceanic crust to the south (below Sangay).

Sr and Nd isotopic compositions of individual olivine-hosted melt inclusions from Hawai'i and Samoa: Implications for the origin of isotopic heterogeneity in melt inclusions from OIB lavas

Geochemical investigations of mantle heterogeneity as sampled by ocean island basalts (OIB) have long relied on isotopic analyses of whole rock lavas. However recent work has shown that significant isotopic disequilibrium can exist between the phases (groundmass and phenocrysts) of a single OIB lava. In this study, we target individual olivine-hosted melt inclusions from two samples—one Samoan and one Hawai'ian—with melt inclusion 87Sr/86Sr heterogeneity previously measured using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). We report 87Sr/86Sr and 143Nd/144Nd in individual melt inclusions analyzed by thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS). In melt inclusions from Samoan sample AVON3-71-2, we find highly heterogeneous (935 ppm) 87Sr/86Sr (0.705193–0.705853, N = 6), consistent with previously identified 87Sr/86Sr heterogeneity (~2030 ppm) by laser ablation multi-collector ICP-MS (0.70459–0.70602, N = 12). In contrast, we find comparatively little (251 ppm) 87Sr/86Sr heterogeneity (0.703761–0.703938, N = 9) in olivine-hosted melt inclusions contained in a Hawaiian scoria clast from the Pu'u Wahi eruption (Mauna Loa). This result contrasts with a previous measurements by single-collector LA-ICP-MS that found highly heterogeneous (~8500 ppm) 87Sr/86Sr in olivine-hosted melt inclusions from the same eruption (0.7021–0.7081, N = 137). In both the AVON3-71-2 and Pu'u Wahi melt inclusions, 143Nd/144Nd is indistinguishable from their respective whole rock 143Nd/144Nd values. The isotopic measurements on the melt inclusions are paired with major and trace element concentrations to investigate the mechanisms generating 87Sr/86Sr variability in melt inclusions. The lack of significant 87Sr/86Sr variability in the Hawai'ian melt inclusions (only 251 ppm) from Pu'u Wahi suggests a relatively simple magmatic history. In contrast, for the Samoan melt inclusions, we present evidence that supports the mixing of isotopically-heterogeneous mantle-derived melts as the mechanism generating the observed 87Sr/86Sr and trace element variability in the melt inclusions from AVON3-71-2. However, brine interaction appears to have increased the Cl concentrations of some of the Samoan inclusions without significantly modifying the 87Sr/86Sr or the other elemental budgets examined in this study.

The historical basanite - alkali basalt - tholeiite suite at Lanzarote, Canary Islands: Carbonated melts of heterogeneous mantle source?

For the last three decades recycled oceanic lithosphere has been proposed as the principal mantle source for mafic magma erupting on oceanic islands. However, the composition of this lithosphere, as well as how and what part of it melts, is a matter of debate. Several melting experiments show that a mafic pyroxenite/eclogite lithology melts at higher pressure than that of ultramafic peridotite/lherzolite. In addition, the role of carbonate recycling and a carbon-rich fluxing agent producing carbonated silicate melt is increasingly being discussed. The historical Timanfaya eruption (1730–1736) at Lanzarote, Canary Islands, produced a range of mafic magmas that evolved with time from basanite trough alkali basalt to silica-saturated tholeiite, whereas only basanite was erupted in the smaller 1824 eruption. Mantle nodules are common and most lavas and tephra are characterised by abundant olivine macrocrysts. Variable trace element ratios of whole-rock tephra (Rb/Th: 3.3–7.7; La/Yb: 12–44; Nb/Ta: 16–21), and more especially those of olivine-bearing melt inclusions (Rb/Th: 2.5–12; La/Yb: 9–77; Nb/Ta: 14–22) suggest rapid melt extraction from a heterogeneous mantle source beneath the island. Increasing (Nb,Ta)/Th, Zr/Hf and decreasing Nb/Ta from basanite through alkali basalt to tholeiite reflect decreasing carbon-rich fluxing on a time scale of less than a few years. Increasing K, Rb, Cs, and Ba over Th with time during the Timanfaya eruption most likely result from diminishing phlogopite control during the production of increasingly silica-saturated magma. Highly variable melt inclusion compositions are compatible with fractional melting of carbonated pyroxenite, with the whole-rock composition most likely representing the amalgamation of these fractional melts at the asthenosphere-lithosphere boundary beneath the eastern Canary Islands.

Was Crustal Contamination Involved in the Formation of the Serpentine-Free Udachnaya-East Kimberlite? New Insights into Parental Melts, Liquidus Assemblage and Effects of Alteration

The petrologically unique Udachnaya-East kimberlite (Siberia, Russia) is characterised by unserpentinised and H2O-poor volcaniclastic and coherent units that contain fresh olivine, along with abundant alkali-rich carbonates, chlorides, sulphides and sulphates in the groundmass. These mineralogical and geochemical characteristics have led to two divergent that advocate different origins. It has been suggested that the unserpentinised units from Udachnaya-East are representative of pristine unaltered kimberlite. Conversely, the alkali-chlorine-sulphur enrichment has been attributed to interactions with crustal materials and, or, post-emplacement by brines. The mineralogical and geochemical features and the compositions of melt inclusions in unserpentinised and serpentinised Udachnaya-East kimberlite varieties are compared in this study. Both varieties of kimberlite have similar major, compatible and incompatible trace element concentrations and primitive mantle normalised trace element patterns, groundmass textures and silicate, oxide and sulphide mineral compositions. However, these two kimberlite varieties are distinguished by: (i) the presence of unaltered olivine, abundant Na-K-Cl-S-rich minerals (i.e. chlorides, Sbearing alkali-carbonates, sodalite) and the absence of H2O-rich phases (i.e. serpentine, iowaite (Mg4Fe3+(OH)8OCl•3(H2O)) in unserpentinised samples, and (ii) the absence of alkali- and chlorine-enriched phases in the groundmass and characteristic olivine alteration (i.e. replacement by serpentine and, or, iowaite) in serpentinised samples. In addition, melt inclusions hosted in olivine, monticellite, spinel and perovskite from unserpentinised and serpentinised kimberlite contain identical daughter phase assemblages that are dominated by alkali-carbonates, chlorides and sulphates/sulphides. This enrichment in alkalis, chlorine and sulphur in melt inclusions demonstrates that these elements were an intrinsic part of the parental magma. The paucity of alkali-carbonates and chlorides in the groundmass of serpentinised Udachnaya-East kimberlite is attributed to their instability and removal during post-emplacement alteration. All evidence previously used in support of crustal and brine of the Udachnaya-East kimberlite is thoroughly evaluated. We demonstrate that contamination models are inconsistent with petrographic, geochemical and melt inclusion data. Our combined data suggest that the Udachnaya-East kimberlite crystallised from an essentially H2O-poor, Si-Na-K-Cl-S-bearing carbonate-rich melt.

Garnet-Pyroxenite-Derived End-Member Magma Type in Kamchatka: Evidence from Composition of Olivine and Olivine-Hosted Melt Inclusions in Holocene Rocks of Kekuknaisky Volcano

Late Quaternary volcanoes of Sredinny Range (Kamchatka) attract geoscientists’ attention by their unusual geochemical features and geodynamic setting. They produced volcanic rocks that are enriched relative to N-MORB in most of incompatible trace elements (except HREE), including strong enrichment in large-ion lithophile elements, and show a negative Nb–Ta anomaly, which is typical for rocks formed in supra-subduction settings. However, modern subduction of the Pacific Plate does not reach the most part of Sredinny Range, as inferred by mapping of Wadati–Benioff zone or seismic tomography. We constrain the source of parental magmas for Sredinny Range volcanic rocks by combining major and trace element geochemical data for olivine and naturally quenched olivine-hosed melt inclusions for Holocene tephra layers of the Kekuknaisky field. Composition of the most magnesian olivine (Ni > 2000 ppm, Fe/Mn ≈ 75 at Mg# ~ 84–85 mol %) and geochemical characteristics of the most primitive melts (FC3MS = 0.61 ± 0.04 (2s)) are consistent with their derivation from a pyroxenite source, while elevated LREE/HREE ratios in lavas indicate that it contained garnet. This garnet-bearing pyroxenite likely originated from the lower crust or lithospheric mantle. Its melting could have occurred due to delamination and sinking into the hotter mantle.

Constraints on lithosphere-asthenosphere melt mixing in basaltic intraplate volcanism from olivine melt inclusions from southern Payenia, Argentina

We present major and trace element compositions of melt inclusions from three alkali basalts from the Río Colorado volcanic field in the Payenia backarc province, Argentina. Modeling of diffusion profiles around the inclusions showed that most inclusions equilibrated <14 days after formation, indicating a short crustal residence time for the magmas and nearly direct ascent through the crust. Despite overlapping host rock isotopic compositions, the inclusions show a large variation in their degree of enrichment, and display trends that we interpret as mixing between asthenospheric OIB-type low K2O-high Nb/U melts and enriched high K2O-low Nb/U lithospheric mantle melts similar in composition to alkaline lamprophyres. The low Nb/U magmas are excessively enriched in the elements Cs, Rb, Ba, Th, U, K, Pb and Cl relative to Nb, Ta and REEs. The enriched low Nb/U components are interpreted to have formed by percolative fractional crystallization of asthenospheric high Nb/U melts in the lithospheric mantle involving crystallization of clinopyroxene, apatite and rutile. The residual fluid-rich melts either mixed directly with new batches of high Nb/U melts or metasomatized and veined the lithospheric mantle which later re-melted during continued volcanism. The major element compositions of the high K2O-low Nb/U components are distinct for the whole rocks and melt inclusions, and most enriched inclusions have lower SiO2 and higher TiO2 contents indicating derivation by melting of amphibole-bearing veins. In contrast, most whole rock low Nb/U basalts have higher SiO2 and lower TiO2 and were most likely formed by melting of pyroxenitic veins or peridotitic metasomatized lithospheric mantle.

BONINITES AS A CRITERION FOR THE GEODYNAMIC DEVELOPMENT OF MAGMATIC SYSTEMS IN PALEOSUBDUCTION ZONES IN GORNY ALTAI

Ancient primary boninitic melts of the Gorny Altai (65–105 km, 1410–1590 °C) were studied from the composition of melt inclusions in clinopyroxenes. We estimated their parameters and the conditions for the onset of magma crystallization in an intermediate chamber at a depth of about 30–35 km, which appear similar to the reference boninitic magmatism of the modern Izu-Bonin island arc. A combined analysis of the composition of inclusions and clinopyroxenes from Gorny Altai boninites shows that within a range of minimum temperature values (1140–1120 °C), the crystallizing material continuously ascends from a depth of 12 to 0.6 km. The pattern is different in case of higher-temperature magmas, and three zones of pyroxene crystallization are distinguished: 18.0–13.8 km (1245–1205 °С), 12.0–3.5 km (1240–1185 °С), and 3.3–0.6 km (1185–1145 °С). Actually, these zones correspond to the intermediate deep-seated magmatic chambers typical of modern island-arc subduction zones [ Dobretsov et al., 2016 ]. Based on the detailed study of zonal phenocrysts of clinopyroxene in boninites from the Kuray ophiolites, we established the parameters of the evolution of the ascending boninite melts. Three temperature intervals (1220–1200 °С, 1235–1210 °С, and 1120–1220 °С) and three pressure ranges (1.5–11.5 kbar, 2.0–6.0 kbar, and 2.0–0.3 kbar) are distinguished. One case shows a significant pressure drop (from 11.5 to 1.5 kbar) with a small drop in temperature (from 1220 °C to 1200 °C). In the second case, the pressure rises from 2.0 to 6.0 kbar, and the crystallization temperature decreases from 1235 to 1210°C. In the third case, crystallization begins at a stable temperature (1120–1140 °C) and a stable pressure (1.4–2.0 kbar); then, in the near-surface conditions, the temperature increases to 1220 °C, and the pressure decreases sharply to 0.3 kbar.

Reintegrating nanogranitoid inclusion composition to reconstruct the prograde history of melt-depleted rocks

A recent fascinating development in the study of high-grade metamorphic basements is represented by the finding of tiny inclusions of crystallized melt (nanogranitoid inclusions) hosted in peritectic phases of migmatites and granulites. These inclusions have the potential to provide the primary composition of crustal melts at the source. A novel use of the recently-published nanogranitoid compositional database is presented here. Using granulites from the world-renowned Ivrea Zone (NW Italy) on which the original melt-reintegration approach has been previously applied, it is shown that reintegrating melt inclusion compositions from the published database into residual rock compositions can be a further useful method to reconstruct a plausible prograde history of melt-depleted rocks. This reconstruction is fundamental to investigate the tectonothermal history of geological terranes.

The Composition of Melt Inclusions in Minerals from Tephra of the Soil–Pyroclastic Cover of Simushir Island (Central Kuril Islands)

The compositions of approximately 70 naturally quenched melt inclusions in olivine, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, and plagioclase phenocrysts from tephra of the soil–pyroclastic cover of Simushir Island (Central Kuril Islands) were studied. The concentrations of the major rock-forming components, H2O, S, and Cl were analyzed in inclusions. The reconstructed melts contain 48.6–78.4 wt % SiO2, 0.3–8.26 wt % MgO, and 0.12–1.72 wt % K2O. The concentration of S and Cl in the melts changes regularly with increasing SiO2 content: from 0.14 to ~0.02 wt % S and from ~0.05 to ~0.28 wt % Cl. The content of H2O in parental melts is 4.2–4.5 wt %.
