Modeling the High-energy Ionizing Output from Simple Stellar and X-Ray Binary Populations

We present a methodology for modeling the joint ionizing impact due to a “simple X-ray population” (SXP) and its corresponding simple stellar population (SSP), where “simple” refers to a single age and metallicity population. We construct composite spectral energy distributions (SEDs) including contributions from ultraluminous X-ray sources and stars, with physically meaningful and consistent consideration of the relative contributions of each component as a function of instantaneous burst age and stellar metallicity. These composite SEDs are used as input for photoionization modeling with Cloudy, from which we produce a grid for the time- and metallicity-dependent nebular emission from these composite populations. We make the results from the photoionization simulations publicly available. We find that the addition of the SXP prolongs the high-energy ionizing output from the population—and correspondingly increases the intensity of nebular lines such as He ii λ1640,4686, [Ne v] λ3426,14.3 μm, and [O iv] 25.9 μm by factors of at least two relative to models without an SXP spectral component. This effect is most pronounced for instantaneous bursts of star formation on timescales >10 Myr and at low metallicities (∼0.1 Z ⊙), due to the imposed time- and metallicity-dependent behavior of the SXP relative to the SSP. We propose nebular emission line diagnostics accessible with JWST suitable for inferring the presence of a composite SXP + SSP, and we discuss how the ionization signatures compare to models for sources such as intermediate-mass black holes.

TIC 114936199: A Quadruple Star System with a 12 Day Outer-orbit Eclipse

We report the discovery with TESS of a remarkable quadruple star system with a 2+1+1 configuration. The two unique characteristics of this system are that (i) the inner eclipsing binary (stars Aa and Ab) eclipses the star in the outermost orbit (star C), and (ii) these outer fourth-body eclipses last for ∼12 days, the longest of any such system known. The three orbital periods are ∼3.3 days, ∼51 days, and ∼2100 days. The extremely long duration of the outer eclipses is due to the fact that star B slows binary A down on the sky relative to star C. We combine TESS photometric data, ground-based photometric observations, eclipse timing points, radial velocity measurements, the composite spectral energy distribution, and stellar isochrones in a spectrophotodynamical analysis to deduce all of the basic properties of the four stars (mass, radius, T eff, and age), as well as the orbital parameters for all three orbits. The four masses are M Aa = 0.382 M ⊙, M Ab = 0.300 M ⊙, M B = 0.540 M ⊙, and M C = 0.615 M ⊙, with a typical uncertainty of 0.015 M ⊙.

Alone but not lonely: Observational evidence that binary interaction is always required to form hot subdwarf stars

Context.Hot subdwarfs are core-helium burning stars that show lower masses and higher temperatures than canonical horizontal branch stars. They are believed to be formed when a red giant suffers an extreme mass-loss episode. Binary interaction is suggested to be the main formation channel, but the high fraction of apparently single hot subdwarfs (up to 30%) has prompted single star formation scenarios to be proposed.Aims.We investigate the possibility that hot subdwarfs could form without interaction by studying wide binary systems. If single formation scenarios were possible, there should be hot subdwarfs in wide binaries that have undergone no interaction.Methods.Angular momentum accretion during interaction is predicted to cause the hot subdwarf companion to spin up to the critical velocity. The effect of this should still be observable given the timescales of the hot subdwarf phase. To study the rotation rates of companions, we have analysed light curves from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite for all known hot subdwarfs showing composite spectral energy distributions indicating the presence of a main sequence wide binary companion. If formation without interaction were possible, that would also imply the existence of hot subdwarfs in very wide binaries that are not predicted to interact. To identify such systems, we have searched for common proper motion companions with projected orbital distances of up to 0.1 pc to all known spectroscopically confirmed hot subdwarfs usingGaiaDR2 astrometry.Results.We find that the companions in composite hot subdwarfs show short rotation periods when compared to field main sequence stars. They display a triangular-shaped distribution with a peak around 2.5 days, similar to what is observed for young open clusters. We also report a shortage of hot subdwarfs with candidate common proper motion companions. We identify only 16 candidates after probing 2938 hot subdwarfs with good astrometry. Out of those, at least six seem to be hierarchical triple systems, in which the hot subdwarf is part of an inner binary.Conclusions.The observed distribution of rotation rates for the companions in known wide hot subdwarf binaries provides evidence of previous interaction causing spin-up. Additionally, there is a shortage of hot subdwarfs in common proper motion pairs, considering the frequency of such systems among progenitors. These results suggest that binary interaction is always required for the formation of hot subdwarfs.

The X-ray emission in young radio active galactic nuclei

ABSTRACT In this work, we investigated the X-ray emission for a sample of young radio active galactic nuclei (AGNs) by combining data from Chandra/XMM–Newton with data for other wavebands. We find strong correlations between the X-ray luminosity LX at 2–10 keV and the radio luminosities LR at 5 GHz for the VLBI radio-core, VLA radio-core and Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters (FIRST) component, indicating that both parsec- and kiloparsec-scale radio emissions are strongly correlated with X-ray emission in these sources. We find an approximately linear dependence of the radio on the X-ray luminosity in the sources with radiatively efficient accretion flows (i.e. the Eddington ratio Redd ≳ 10−3), with b ∼ 1 ($L_{\rm R}\, \propto \, L_{\rm X} ^{b}$) and $\xi _{\rm RX}\, \sim$ 1 in the fundamental plane using the VLBI data. The dependence is consistent with the re-analysed results of a previous study of Fan and Bai at Redd ≳ 10−3, but is significantly different from the theoretical prediction of accretion flow as the origin of X-ray emission. In contrast to the case for radio-quiet quasars, there is no significant correlation between Γ and the Eddington ratio. Our results seem to indicate that the X-ray emission of high-accretion young radio AGNs may be from the jet. We constructed the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for 18 sources (most of which are in radiatively efficient accretion), namely nine galaxies and nine quasars with high-quality X-ray data, and find that the X-ray emission of most quasars is more luminous than that of normal radio-quiet quasars. This is clearly seen from the quasar composite SED, in which the X-ray emission is apparently higher than that of radio-quiet quasars, probably supporting jet-related X-ray emission in young radio AGNs. The possibility that the X-ray emission is from self-synchrotron Compton is discussed.

Dust mass and dust production efficiencies on the redshift frontier

AbstractIn order to clarify the dust production in the early Universe, we constrain the dust mass in high-redshift (z ≳ 5) galaxies using the upper limits obtained by ALMA. We perform fitting to the rest-frame UV–far-infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) of a giant Lyα emitter, Himiko, at z = 6.6 and a composite SED of z > 5 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs). For Himiko, we obtain a high dust temperature > 70 K. This high dust temperature puts a strong upper limit on the total dust mass Md ≲ 2 × 106 M⊙, and the dust mass produced per supernova (SN) md,SN ≲ 0.1 M⊙. Such a low md,SN suggests significant loss of dust by reverse shock destruction or outflow. For the LBG sample, we only obtain an upper limit for md,SN as ∼2 M⊙. This clarifies the importance of observing UV-bright objects (like Himiko) to constrain the dust production by SNe.

The Lyman Continuum Escape Survey: Ionizing Radiation from [O iii]-strong Sources at a Redshift of 3.1

Abstract We present results from the LymAn Continuum Escape Survey (LACES), a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) program designed to characterize the ionizing radiation emerging from a sample of Lyα-emitting galaxies at redshift z ≃ 3.1. As many show intense [O iii] emission characteristic of z > 6.5 star-forming galaxies, they may represent valuable low-redshift analogs of galaxies in the reionization era. Using HST Wide Field Camera 3/UVIS F336W to image Lyman continuum emission, we investigate the escape fraction of ionizing photons in this sample. For 61 sources, of which 77% are spectroscopically confirmed and 53 have measures of [O iii] emission, we detect Lyman continuum leakage in 20%, a rate significantly higher than is seen in individual continuum-selected Lyman break galaxies. We estimate that there is a 98% probability that ≤2 of our detections could be affected by foreground contamination. Fitting multiband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) to take account of the varying stellar populations, dust extinctions and metallicities, we derive individual Lyman continuum escape fractions corrected for foreground intergalactic absorption. We find escape fractions of 15%–60% for individual objects and infer an average 20% escape fraction by fitting composite SEDs for our detected samples. Surprisingly, however, even a deep stack of those sources with no individual F336W detections provides a stringent upper limit on the average escape fraction of less than 0.5%. We examine various correlations with source properties and discuss the implications in the context of the popular picture that cosmic reionization is driven by such compact, low-metallicity star-forming galaxies.

Zfourge: Extreme 5007 Å Emission May Be a Common Early-lifetime Phase for Star-forming Galaxies at z > 2.5

Abstract Using the Prospector spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting code, we analyze the properties of 19 extreme emission-line galaxies (EELGs) identified in the bluest composite SED in the zfourge survey at 2.5 ≤ z ≤ 4. Prospector includes a physical model for nebular emission and returns probability distributions for stellar mass, stellar metallicity, dust attenuation, and nonparametric star formation history (SFH). The EELGs show evidence of a starburst in the most recent 50 Myr, with the median EELG having a specific star formation rate (sSFR) of 4.6 Gyr−1 and forming 15% of its mass in this short time. For a sample of more typical star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at the same redshifts, the median SFG has an sSFR of 1.1 Gyr−1 and forms only 4% of its mass in the last 50 Myr. We find that virtually all of our EELGs have rising SFHs, while most of our SFGs do not. From our analysis, we hypothesize that many, if not most, SFGs at z ≥ 2.5 undergo an extreme Hβ+[O iii] emission-line phase early in their lifetimes. In a companion paper, we obtain spectroscopic confirmation of the EELGs as part of our MOSEL survey. In the future, explorations of uncertainties in modeling the UV slope for galaxies at z > 2 are needed to better constrain their properties, e.g., stellar metallicities.

Polar Dust, Nuclear Obscuration, and IR SED Diversity in Type-1 AGNs*

Abstract Despite the hypothesized similar face-on viewing angles, the infrared emission of type-1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) has diverse spectral energy distribution (SED) shapes that deviate substantially from the well-characterized quasar templates. Motivated by the commonly seen UV-optical obscuration and the discovery of parsec-scale mid-IR polar dust emission in some nearby AGNs, we develop semi-empirical SED libraries for reddened type-1 AGNs built on quasar intrinsic templates, assuming low-level extinction caused by an extended distribution of large dust grains. We demonstrate that this model can reproduce the nuclear UV to IR SED and the strong mid-IR polar dust emission of NGC 3783, the type-1 AGN with the most relevant and robust observational constraints. In addition, we compile 64 low-z Seyfert-1 nuclei with negligible mid-IR star formation contamination and satisfactorily fit the individual IR SEDs as well as the composite UV to mid-IR composite SEDs. Given the success of these fits, we characterize the possible infrared SED of AGN polar dust emission and utilize a simple but effective strategy to infer its prevalence among type-1 AGNs. The SEDs of high-z peculiar AGNs, including the extremely red quasars, mid-IR warm-excess AGNs, and hot dust-obscured galaxies, can be also reproduced by our model. These results indicate that the IR SEDs of most AGNs, regardless of redshift or luminosity, arise from similar circumnuclear torus properties but differ mainly due to the optical depths of extended obscuring dust components.

ZFOURGE: Using Composite Spectral Energy Distributions to Characterize Galaxy Populations at 1 < z < 4∗

Abstract We investigate the properties of galaxies as they shut off star formation over the 4 billion years surrounding peak cosmic star formation. To do this, we categorize ∼7000 galaxies from 1 < z < 4 into 90 groups based on the shape of their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and build composite SEDs with R ∼ 50 resolution. These composite SEDs show a variety of spectral shapes and also show trends in parameters such as color, mass, star formation rate, and emission-line equivalent width. Using emission-line equivalent widths and strength of the 4000 Å break, , we categorize the composite SEDs into five classes: extreme emission line, star-forming, transitioning, post-starburst, and quiescent galaxies. The transitioning population of galaxies shows modest Hα emission (EWREST ∼ 40 Å) compared to more typical star-forming composite SEDs at log10(M/M ⊙) ∼ 10.5 (EWREST ∼ 80 Å). Together with their smaller sizes (3 kpc vs. 4 kpc) and higher Sérsic indices (2.7 vs. 1.5), this indicates that morphological changes initiate before the cessation of star formation. The transitional group shows a strong increase of over 1 dex in number density from z ∼ 3 to z ∼ 1, similar to the growth in the quiescent population, while post-starburst galaxies become rarer at z ≲ 1.5. We calculate average quenching timescales of 1.6 Gyr at z ∼ 1.5 and 0.9 Gyr at z ∼ 2.5 and conclude that a fast-quenching mechanism producing post-starbursts dominated the quenching of galaxies at early times, while a slower process has become more common since z ∼ 2.

Composite Spectral Energy Distributions and Infrared–Optical Colors of Type 1 and Type 2 Quasars

Abstract We present observed mid-infrared and optical colors and composite spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of type 1 (broad-line) and 2 (narrow-line) quasars selected from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopy. A significant fraction of powerful quasars are obscured by dust and are difficult to detect in optical photometric or spectroscopic surveys. However, these may be more easily identified on the basis of mid-infrared (MIR) colors and SEDs. Using samples of SDSS type 1 and 2 matched in redshift and [O iii] luminosity, we produce composite rest-frame 0.2–15 μm SEDs based on SDSS, UKIDSS, and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer photometry and perform model fits using simple galaxy and quasar SED templates. The SEDs of type 1 and 2 quasars are remarkably similar, with the differences explained primarily by the extinction of the quasar component in the type 2 systems. For both types of quasar, the flux of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) relative to the host galaxy increases with AGN luminosity ( L [ O III ] ) and redder observed MIR color, but we find only weak dependencies of the composite SEDs on mechanical jet power as determined through radio luminosity. We conclude that luminous quasars can be effectively selected using simple MIR color criteria similar to those identified previously ( W 1 – W 2 > 0.7 ; Vega), although these criteria miss many heavily obscured objects. Obscured quasars can be further identified based on optical–IR colors (for example, ( u – W 3 [ AB ] ) > 1.4 ( W 1 – W 2 [ Vega ] ) + 3.2 ). These results illustrate the power of large statistical studies of obscured quasars selected on the basis of MIR and optical photometry.

Dust masses of z > 5 galaxies from SED fitting and ALMA upper limits

We aim at constraining the dust mass in high-redshift ($z\gtrsim 5$) galaxies using the upper limits obtained by ALMA in combination with the rest-frame UV--optical spectral energy distributions (SEDs). For SED fitting, because of degeneracy between dust extinction and stellar age, we focus on two extremes: continuous star formation (Model A) and instantaneous star formation (Model B). We apply these models to Himiko (as a representative UV-bright object) and a composite SED of $z>5$ Lyman break galaxies (LBGs). For Himiko, Model A requires a significant dust extinction, which leads to a high dust temperature $>70$ K for consistency with the ALMA upper limit. This high dust temperature puts a strong upper limit on the total dust mass $M_\mathrm{d}\lesssim 2\times 10^6$ M$_{\odot}$, and the dust mass produced per supernova (SN) $m_\mathrm{d,SN}\lesssim 0.1$ M$_{\odot}$. Such a low $m_\mathrm{d,SN}$ suggests significant loss of dust by reverse shock destruction or outflow, and implies that SNe are not the dominant source of dust at high $z$. Model B allows $M_\mathrm{d}\sim 2\times 10^7$ M$_{\odot}$ and $m_\mathrm{d,SN}\sim 0.3$ M$_{\odot}$.} We could distinguish between Models A and B if we observe Himiko at {wavelength $<$ 1.2 mm by ALMA. For the LBG sample, we obtain $M_\mathrm{d}\lesssim 2\times 10^6$ M$_{\odot}$ for a typical LBG at $z>5$, but this only puts an upper limit for $m_\mathrm{d,SN}$ as $\sim 2$ M$_{\odot}$. This clarifies the importance of observing UV-bright objects (like Himiko) to constrain the dust production by SNe.

Welcome to the Twilight Zone: The Mid-infrared Properties of Post-starburst Galaxies

Abstract We investigate the optical and Wide-field Survey Explorer (WISE) colors of “E+A” identified post-starburst galaxies, including a deep analysis of 190 post-starbursts detected in the 2 μm All Sky Survey Extended Source Catalog. The post-starburst galaxies appear in both the optical green valley and the WISE Infrared Transition Zone. Furthermore, we find that post-starbursts occupy a distinct region of [3.4]–[4.6] versus [4.6]–[12] WISE colors, enabling the identification of this class of transitioning galaxies through the use of broadband photometric criteria alone. We have investigated possible causes for the WISE colors of post-starbursts by constructing a composite spectral energy distribution (SED), finding that the mid-infrared (4–12 μm) properties of post-starbursts are consistent with either 11.3 μm polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission, or thermally pulsating asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) and post-AGB stars. The composite SED of extended post-starburst galaxies with 22 μm emission detected with signal-to-noise ratio requires a hot dust component to produce their observed rising mid-infrared SED between 12 and 22 μm. The composite SED of WISE 22 μm non-detections (S/N &lt; 3), created by stacking 22 μm images, is also flat, requiring a hot dust component. The most likely source of the mid-infrared emission of these E+A galaxies is a buried active galactic nucleus (AGN). The inferred upper limits to the Eddington ratios of post-starbursts are 10−2–10−4, with an average of 10−3. This suggests that AGNs are not radiatively dominant in these systems. This could mean that including selections capable of identifying AGNs as part of a search for transitioning and post-starburst galaxies would create a more complete census of the transition pathways taken as a galaxy quenches its star formation.

The Intrinsic Far-infrared Continua of Type-1 Quasars

Abstract The range of currently proposed active galactic nucleus (AGN) far-infrared templates results in uncertainties in retrieving host galaxy information from infrared observations and also undermines constraints on the outer part of the AGN torus. We discuss how to test and reconcile these templates. Physically, the fraction of the intrinsic AGN IR-processed luminosity compared with that from the central engine should be consistent with the dust-covering factor. In addition, besides reproducing the composite spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of quasars, a correct AGN IR template combined with an accurate library of star-forming galaxy templates should be able to reproduce the IR properties of the host galaxies, such as the luminosity-dependent SED shapes and aromatic feature strengths. We develop tests based on these expected behaviors and find that the shape of the AGN intrinsic far-IR emission drops off rapidly starting at ∼20 μm and can be matched by an Elvis et al.-like template with a minor modification. Despite the variations in the near- to mid-IR bands, AGNs in quasars and Seyfert galaxies have remarkably similar intrinsic far-IR SEDs at λ ∼ 20–100 μm, suggesting a similar emission character of the outermost region of the circumnuclear torus. The variations of the intrinsic AGN IR SEDs among the type-1 quasar population can be explained by the changing relative strengths of four major dust components with similar characteristic temperatures, and there is evidence for compact AGN-heated dusty structures at sub-kiloparsec scales in the far-IR.

Discovery of Extreme [O iii]+Hβ Emitting Galaxies Tracing an Overdensity at z ∼ 3.5 in CDF-South∗

Abstract Using deep multi-wavelength photometry of galaxies from zfourge, we group galaxies at by the shape of their spectral energy distributions (SEDs). We identify a population of galaxies with excess emission in the K s -band, which corresponds to [O iii]+Hβ emission at . This population includes 78% of the bluest galaxies with UV slopes steeper than . We de-redshift and scale this photometry to build two composite SEDs, enabling us to measure equivalent widths of these extreme [O iii]+Hβ emission line galaxies (EELGs) at . We identify 60 galaxies that comprise a composite SED with a [O iii]+Hβ rest-frame equivalent width of 803 ± 228 Å and another 218 galaxies in a composite SED with an equivalent width of 230 ± 90 Å. These EELGs are analogous to the “green peas” found in the SDSS and are thought to be undergoing their first burst of star formation due to their blue colors ( ), young ages ( ), and low dust attenuation values. Their strong nebular emission lines and compact sizes (typically ∼1.4 kpc) are consistent with the properties of the star-forming galaxies possibly responsible for reionizing the universe at . Many of the EELGs also exhibit Lyα emission. Additionally, we find that many of these sources are clustered in an overdensity in the Chandra Deep Field South, with five spectroscopically confirmed members at . The spatial distribution and photometric redshifts of the zfourge population further confirm the overdensity highlighted by the EELGs.

UV TO IR LUMINOSITIES AND DUST ATTENUATION DETERMINED FROM ∼4000 K-SELECTED GALAXIES AT 1 &lt; z &lt; 3 IN THE ZFOURGE SURVEY*

ABSTRACT We build a set of composite galaxy spectral energy distributions (SEDs) by de-redshifting and scaling multi-wavelength photometry from galaxies in the ZFOURGE survey, covering the CDFS, COSMOS, and UDS fields. From a sample of ∼4000 K s -band selected galaxies, we define 38 composite galaxy SEDs that yield continuous low-resolution spectra (R ∼ 45) over the rest-frame range 0.1–4 μm. Additionally, we include far infrared photometry from the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Herschel Space Observatory to characterize the infrared properties of our diverse set of composite SEDs. From these composite SEDs we analyze the rest-frame UVJ colors, as well as the ratio of IR to UV light (IRX) and the UV slope (β) in the IRX−β dust relation at 1 &lt; z &lt; 3. Blue star-forming composite SEDs show IRX and β values consistent with local relations; dusty star-forming galaxies have considerable scatter, as found for local IR bright sources, but on average appear bluer than expected for their IR fluxes. We measure a tight linear relation between rest-frame UVJ colors and dust attenuation for star-forming composites, providing a direct method for estimating dust content from either (U − V) or ( V &minus; J ) ?> rest-frame colors for star-forming galaxies at intermediate redshifts.

THE MOSDEF SURVEY: MEASUREMENTS OF BALMER DECREMENTS AND THE DUST ATTENUATION CURVE AT REDSHIFTSz∼ 1.4–2.6

We present results on the dust attenuation curve of z ? 2 galaxies using early observations from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field survey. Our sample consists of 224 star-forming galaxies with zspec = 1.36?2.59 and high signal-to-noise ratio measurements of H? and H? obtained with Keck/MOSFIRE. We construct composite spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of galaxies in bins of Balmer decrement to measure the attenuation curve. We find a curve that is similar to the SMC extinction curve at ? ? 2500 ?. At shorter wavelengths, the shape is identical to that of the Calzetti et al. relation, but with a lower normalization. Hence, the new attenuation curve results in star formation rates (SFRs) that are lower, and stellar masses that are dex lower, than those obtained with the Calzetti relation. We find that the difference in the total attenuation of the ionized gas and stellar continuum correlates strongly with SFR, such that for dust-corrected SFRs ? 20 M? yr?1, assuming a Chabrier initial mass function, the nebular emission lines suffer an increasing degree of obscuration relative to the continuum. A simple model that can account for these trends is one in which the UV through optical stellar continuum is dominated by a population of less-reddened stars, while the nebular line and bolometric luminosities become increasingly dominated by dustier stellar populations for galaxies with large SFRs, as a result of the increased dust enrichment that accompanies such galaxies. Consequently, UV- and SED-based SFRs may underestimate the total SFR at even modest levels of ?20 M? yr?1.

SIMULTANEOUS MODELING OF THE STELLAR AND DUST EMISSION IN DISTANT GALAXIES: IMPLICATIONS FOR STAR FORMATION RATE MEASUREMENTS

We have used near-ultraviolet (NUV) to mid-infrared (MIR) composite spectral energy distributions (SEDs) to simultaneously model the attenuated stellar and dust emission of 0.5 < z < 2.0 galaxies. These composite SEDs were previously constructed from the photometric catalogs of the NEWFIRM Medium-Band Survey, by stacking the observed photometry of galaxies that have similar rest-frame NUV-to-NIR SEDs. In this work, we include a stacked MIPS 24 micron measurement for each SED type to extend the SEDs to rest-frame MIR wavelengths. Consistent with previous studies, the observed MIR emission for most SED types is higher than expected from only the attenuated stellar emission. We fit the NUV-to-MIR composite SEDs by the Flexible Stellar Population Synthesis (SPS) models, which include both stellar and dust emission. We compare the best-fit star formation rates (SFRs) to the SFRs based on simple UV+IR estimators. Interestingly, the UV and IR luminosities overestimate SFRs - compared to the model SFRs - by more than ~ 1 dex for quiescent galaxies, while for the highest star-forming galaxies in our sample the two SFRs are broadly consistent. The difference in specific SFRs also shows a gradually increasing trend with declining specific SFR, implying that quiescent galaxies have even lower specific SFRs than previously found. Contributions from evolved stellar populations to both the UV and the MIR SEDs most likely explain the discrepancy. Based on this work, we conclude that SFRs should be determined from modeling the attenuated stellar and dust emission simultaneously, instead of employing simple UV+IR-based SFR estimators.

The orientation dependence of quasar spectral energy distributions

We investigate the orientation dependence of the spectral energy distributions in a sample of radio-loud quasars. Selected specifically to study orientation issues, the sample contains 52 sources with redshifts in the range 0.16<z<1.4 and measurements of radio core dominance, a radio orientation indicator. Measured properties include monochromatic luminosities at a range of wavelengths between the infrared and X-rays, integrated infrared luminosity, spectral slopes, and the covering fraction of the obscuring circumnuclear dust. We estimate dust covering fraction assuming that the accretion disk emits anisotropically and discuss the shortcomings and technical difficulties of this calculation. Luminosities are found to depend on orientation, with face-on sources factors of a 2-3 brighter than more edge-on sources, depending on wavelength. The degree of anisotropy varies very little with wavelength such that the overall shape of the spectral energy distribution does not vary significantly with orientation. In the infrared, we do not observe a decrease in anisotropy with increasing wavelength. The spectral slopes and estimates of covering fraction are not significantly orientation dependent. We construct composite spectral energy distributions as a function of radio core dominance and find that these illustrate the results determined from the measured properties.

THE DUST ATTENUATION LAW IN DISTANT GALAXIES: EVIDENCE FOR VARIATION WITH SPECTRAL TYPE

This letter utilizes composite spectral energy distributions (SEDs) constructed from NEWFIRM Medium-Band Survey photometry to constrain the dust attenuation curve in 0.5<z<2.0 galaxies. Based on similarities between the full SED shapes (0.3-8 micron), we have divided galaxies in 32 different spectral classes and stacked their photometry. As each class contains galaxies over a range in redshift, the resulting rest-frame SEDs are well-sampled in wavelength and show various spectral features including Halpha and the UV dust bump at 2175 Angstrom. We fit all composite SEDs with flexible stellar population synthesis models, while exploring attenuation curves with varying slopes and UV bump strengths. The Milky Way and Calzetti law provide poor fits at UV wavelengths for nearly all SEDs. Consistent with previous studies, we find that the best-fit attenuation law varies with spectral type. There is a strong correlation between the best-fit dust slope and UV bump strength, with steeper laws having stronger bumps. Moreover, the attenuation curve correlates with specific star formation rate (SFR), with more active galaxies having shallower dust curves and weaker bumps. There is also a weak correlation with inclination. The observed trends can be explained by differences in the dust-to-star geometry, a varying grain size distribution, or a combination of both. Our results have several implications for galaxy evolution studies. First, the assumption of a universal dust model leads to biases in derived galaxy properties. Second, the presence of a dust bump may result in underestimated values for the UV slope, used to correct SFRs of distant galaxies.

GOODS-HERSCHEL: IMPACT OF ACTIVE GALACTIC NUCLEI AND STAR FORMATION ACTIVITY ON INFRARED SPECTRAL ENERGY DISTRIBUTIONS AT HIGH REDSHIFT

We explore the effects of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and star formation activity on the infrared (0.3-1000 microns) spectral energy distributions of luminous infrared galaxies from z = 0.5 to 4.0. We have compiled a large sample of 151 galaxies selected at 24 microns (S24 > 100 uJy) in the GOODS-N and ECDFS fields for which we have deep Spitzer IRS spectroscopy, allowing us to decompose the mid-IR spectrum into contributions from star formation and AGN activity. A significant portion (~25%) of our sample is dominated by an AGN in the mid-IR. Based on the mid-IR classification, we divide our full sample into four sub-samples: z~1 star-forming (SF) sources; z~2 SF sources; AGN with clear 9.7 micron silicate absorption; and AGN with featureless mid-IR spectra. From our large spectroscopic sample and wealth of multi-wavelength data, including deep Herschel imaging at 100, 160, 250, 350, and 500 microns, we use 95 galaxies with complete spectral coverage to create a composite spectral energy distribution (SED) for each sub-sample. We then fit a two-temperature component modified blackbody to the SEDs. We find that the IR SEDs have similar cold dust temperatures, regardless of the mid-IR power source, but display a marked difference in the warmer dust temperatures. We calculate the average effective temperature of the dust in each sub-sample and find a significant (~20 K) difference between the SF and AGN systems. We compare our composite SEDs to local templates and find that local templates do not accurately reproduce the mid-IR features and dust temperatures of our high redshift systems. High redshift IR luminous galaxies contain significantly more cool dust than their local counterparts. We find that a full suite of photometry spanning the IR peak is necessary to accurately account for the dominant dust temperature components in high redshift IR luminous galaxies.
