Quantifying and Modeling the Impact of Phase State on the Ice Nucleation Abilities of 2-Methyltetrols as a Key Component of Secondary Organic Aerosol Derived from Isoprene Epoxydiols.

Organic aerosols (OAs) may serve as ice-nucleating particles (INPs), impacting the formation and properties of cirrus clouds when their phase state and viscosity are in the semisolid to glassy range. However, there is a lack of direct parameterization between aerosol viscosity and their ice nucleation capabilities. In this study, we experimentally measured the ice nucleation rate of 2-methyltetrols (2-MT) aerosols, a key component of isoprene-epoxydiol-derived secondary organic aerosols (IEPOX-SOA), at different viscosities. These results demonstrate that the phase state has a significant impact on the ice nucleation abilities of OA under typical cirrus cloud conditions, with the ice nucleation rate increasing by 2 to 3 orders of magnitude when the phase state changes from liquid to semisolid. An innovative parametric model based on classical nucleation theory was developed to directly quantify the impact of viscosity on the heterogeneous nucleation rate. This model accurately represents our laboratory measurement and can be implemented into climate models due to its simple, equation-based form. Based on data collected from the ACRIDICON-CHUVA field campaign, our model predicts that the INP concentration from IEPOX-SOA can reach the magnitude of 1 to tens per liter in the cirrus cloud region impacted by the Amazon rainforest, consistent with recent field observations and estimations. This novel parameterization framework can also be applied in regional and global climate models to further improve representations of cirrus cloud formation and associated climate impacts.

Characteristics of oxygenated volatile organic compounds in Zurich, Switzerland: Sources, composition, and implication for secondary aerosol formation

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are of vital importance in the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Understanding SOA formation remains challenging, requiring further investigation of both oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) and SOA composition with novel measurement techniques. In this work, we deployed a proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTR-TOF-MS) to measure VOCs and their oxidation products in urban Zurich in summer 2016. The positive matrix factorization (PMF) source apportionment method identified five sources, including two primary sources (traffic and local), and three OVOC sources associated with different oxidation processes in the atmosphere. Together with the deployment of an extractive electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (EESI-TOF-MS), this enabled a detailed understanding of the SOA components which were dominated by biogenic SOA and distinguished by daytime and nighttime chemistry. The combination of the two instruments provided new insights in the understanding of atmospheric processes by comparison of molecular-level secondary components between gas phase and particle phase. In the gas phase, two OVOC factors (32.1% and 16.7%) showed strong influence from the oxidation of aromatic compounds, exhibiting low atomic H to C ratios, and were distinguished by daytime and night-time chemistry. The third OVOC factor (19.3%) was characterized by strong biogenic influence. Similar temporal variations were found for the gas and aerosol phase, indicating co-evolution of OVOCs and SOA in summer. Besides, comparisons of OVOC compounds and SOA composition exhibited similar H to C ratio distributions for both the gas phase and particle phase.

Mechanistic insight into the kinetic fragmentation of norpinonic acid in the gas phase: an experimental and density functional theory (DFT) study

Abstract. Norpinonic acid has been known as an important α-pinene atmospheric secondary organic aerosol (SOA) component. It is formed in the reaction of α-pinene, β-pinene or verbenone with atmospheric oxidizing reagents. In the presented study, tandem mass spectrometry techniques were used to determine the exact norpinonic acid fragmentation pathway in the gas phase. The precursor anion – deprotonated norpinonic acid (m/z 169), generated in an electrospray (ESI) source – was introduced into the collision cell of the mass spectrometer and fragmented using the energy-resolved collision-induced dissociation (ER-CID) technique. The experimental energy values of degradation processes were determined via analysis of the breakdown curves. Quantum chemical calculations of the reaction models were also constructed, including calculation of all transition states. Comparison between the experimental and the theoretical threshold energies calculated at a ωB97XD/6-311+G(2d,p) theoretical level has shown a good correlation. Two basic pathways of the fragmentation of the parent anion [M-H]− (m/z 169) were observed. Firstly this leads to the decarboxylation product (m/z 125) and secondly to the loss of a neutral molecule (C4H6O), together with the formation of the anion m/z 99. On the other hand, the breakdown of the anion m/z 125 gives rise to the m/z 69, 57 and 55 ions. To confirm structures formed during ER-CID experiments, the gas-phase proton transfer reactions were examined of all norpinonic acid anionic fragments with a series of neutral reagents, characterized by proton affinity (PA) values. Based on PA difference analysis, the most possible chemical structures were proposed for the observed fragment anions.

Volatility Basis Set Distributions and Viscosity of Organic Aerosol Mixtures: Insights from Chemical Characterization Using Temperature-Programmed Desorption-Direct Analysis in Real-Time High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry.

Quantitative assessment of gas-particle partitioning of individual components within complex atmospheric organic aerosol (OA) mixtures is critical for predicting and comprehending the formation and evolution of OA particles in the atmosphere. This investigation leverages previously documented data obtained through a temperature-programmed desorption-direct analysis in real-time, high-resolution mass spectrometry (TPD-DART-HRMS) platform. This methodology facilitates the bottom-up construction of volatility basis set (VBS) distributions for constituents found in three biogenic secondary organic aerosol (SOA) mixtures produced through the ozonolysis of α-pinene, limonene, and ocimene. The apparent enthalpies (ΔH*, kJ mol-1) and saturation mass concentrations (CT*, μg·m-3) of individual SOA components, determined as a function of temperature (T, K), facilitated an assessment of changes in VBS distributions and gas-particle partitioning with respect to T and atmospheric total organic mass loadings (tOM, μg·m-3). The VBS distributions reveal distinct differences in volatilities among monomers, dimers, and trimers, categorized into separate volatility bins. At the ambient temperature of T = 298 K, only monomers efficiently partition between gas and particle phases across a broad range of atmospherically relevant tOM values of 1-100 μg·m-3. Partitioning of dimers and trimers becomes notable only at T > 360 K and T > 420 K, respectively. The viscosity of SOA mixtures is assessed using a bottom-up calculation approach, incorporating the input of elemental formulas, ΔH*, CT*, and particle-phase mass fractions of the SOA components. Through this approach, we are able to accurately estimate the variations in SOA viscosity that result from the evaporation of its components. These variations are, in turn, influenced by atmospherically relevant changes in tOM and T. Comparison of the calculated SOA viscosity and diffusivity values with literature reported experimental results shows close agreement, thereby validating the employed calculation approach. These findings underscore the significant potential for TPD-DART-HRMS measurements in enabling the untargeted analysis of organic molecules within OA mixtures. This approach facilitates quantitative assessment of their gas-particle partitioning and allows for the estimation of their viscosity and condensed-phase diffusion, thereby contributing valuable insights to atmospheric models.

Real-Time Identification of Aerosol-Phase Carboxylic Acid Production Using Extractive Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry.

Comprehensive identification of aerosol sources and their constituent organic compounds requires aerosol-phase molecular-level characterization with a high time resolution. While real-time chemical characterization of aerosols is becoming increasingly common, information about functionalization and structure is typically obtained from offline methods. This study presents a method for determining the presence of carboxylic acid functional groups in real time using extractive electrospray ionization mass spectrometry based on measurements of [M - H + 2Na]+ adducts. The method is validated and characterized using standard compounds. A proof-of-concept application to α-pinene secondary organic aerosol (SOA) shows the ability to identify carboxylic acids even in complex mixtures. The real-time capability of the method allows for the observation of the production of carboxylic acids, likely formed in the particle phase on short time scales (<120 min). Our research explains previous findings of carboxylic acids being a significant component of SOA and a quick decrease in peroxide functionalization following SOA formation. We show that the formation of these acids is commensurate with the increase of dimers in the particle phase. Our results imply that SOA is in constant evolution through condensed-phase processes, which lower the volatility of the aerosol components and increase the available condensed mass for SOA growth and, therefore, aerosol mass loading in the atmosphere. Further work could aim to quantify the effect of particle-phase acid formation on the aerosol volatility distributions.

Nighttime reactions of a series of unsaturated alcohols with NO3•: Kinetics, products and mechanisms study

Unsaturated alcohols are a class of Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) emitted in large quantities by plants when damaged or under adverse environmental conditions, and studies on their atmospheric degradation at night are still lacking. We used chamber experiments to study the gas-phase reactions of three unsaturated alcohols, E-2-penten-1-ol, Z-2-hexen-1-ol and Z-3-hepten-1-ol, with NO3 radicals (NO3•) during the night. The rate constants of these reactions were (11.7 ± 1.76) × 10−13, (8.55 ± 1.33) × 10−13 and (6.08 ± 0.47) × 10−13 cm3/(molecule·s) at 298K and 760 Torr, respectively. In contrast, the reaction rate of similar substances with ozone was about 10−18 cm3/(molecule·s), which indicates that the reaction with NO3• is the main oxidation pathway for unsaturated alcohols at night. Small molecule aldehydes and ketones were the main gas-phase organic products of the reaction of three aldehydes and ketones with NO3•, and the total small molecule aldehydes and ketones yields can reach between 45%-60%. They mainly originate from the breakage of alkoxy radicals, and different breakage sites determine different product distributions. In addition, the SOA yields of the three unsaturated alcohols with NO3• were 7.1% ± 1.0%, 12.5% ± 1.9% and 30.0% ± 4.5%, respectively, which were much higher than those of similarly structured substances with O3 or OH radicals (•OH). The results of high-resolution mass spectrometry shows that the main components of Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) of the three unsaturated alcohols are dimeric compounds containing several nitrate groups, which are formed through the polymerization of oxyalkyl radicals.

Heterogeneous Reactions of Phenol on Different Components of Mineral Dust Aerosol: Formation of Oxidized Organic and Nitro-Phenolic Compounds.

Phenol, a common semi-volatile compound associated with different emissions including from plants and biomass burning, as well as anthropogenic emissions and its derivatives, are important components of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs). Gas and aqueous phase reactions of phenol, in the presence of photochemical drivers, are fairly well understood. However, despite observations showing aromatic content within SOA size and mass increases during dust episodes, the heterogeneous reactions of phenol with mineral dusts are poorly understood. In the current study, surface reactions of phenol at the gas/solid interface with different components of mineral dust including SiO2, α-Fe2O3, and TiO2 have been investigated. Whereas reversible surface adsorption of phenol occurs on SiO2 surfaces, for both α-Fe2O3 and TiO2 surfaces, phenol reacts to form a wide range of OH substituted aromatic products. For α-Fe2O3 surfaces that have been nitrated by gas-phase reactions of nitric acid prior to exposure to phenol, unique compounds form on the surface including nitro-phenolic compounds. Moreover, additional surface chemistry was observed when adsorbed nitro-phenolic products were exposed to gas-phase SO2 as a result of the formation of adsorbed nitrite from nitrate redox chemistry with adsorbed SO2. Overall, this study reveals the extensive chemistry as well as the complexity of reactions of prevalent organic compounds leading to the formation of SOA on mineral surfaces.

Oxygenated organic molecules produced by low-NOx photooxidation of aromatic compounds: contributions to secondary organic aerosol and steric hindrance

Abstract. Oxygenated organic molecules (OOMs) produced by the oxidation of aromatic compounds are key components of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in urban environments. The steric effects of substitutions and rings and the role of key reaction pathways in altering the OOM distributions remain unclear because of the lack of systematic multi-precursor study over a wide range of OH exposure. In this study, we conducted flow-tube experiments and used the nitrate adduct time-of-flight chemical ionization mass spectrometer (NO3--TOF-CIMS) to measure the OOMs produced by the photooxidation of six key aromatic precursors under low-NOx conditions. For single aromatic precursors, the detected OOM peak clusters show an oxygen atom difference of one or two, indicating the involvement of multi-step auto-oxidation and alkoxy radical pathways. Multi-generation OH oxidation is needed to explain the diverse hydrogen numbers in the observed formulae. In particular, for double-ring precursors at higher OH exposure, multi-generation OH oxidation may have significantly enriched the dimer formulae. The results suggest that methyl substitutions in precursor lead to less fragmented OOM products, while the double-ring structure corresponds to less efficient formation of closed-shell monomeric and dimeric products, both highlighting significant steric effects of precursor molecular structure on the OOM formation. Naphthalene-derived OOMs however have lower volatilities and greater SOA contributions than the other-type of OOMs, which may be more important in initial particle growth. Overall, the OOMs identified by the NO3--TOF-CIMS may have contributed up to 30.0 % of the measured SOA mass, suggesting significant mass contributions of less oxygenated, undetected semi-volatile products. Our results highlight the key roles of progressive OH oxidation, methyl substitution and ring structure in the OOM formation from aromatic precursors, which need to be considered in future model developments to improve the model performance for organic aerosol.

Characterization of Organosulfates (OSs) in typical urban areas in Eastern China: Source, Process, and Volatility

Organosulfates (OSs) are an important component of secondary organic aerosols (SOA), accounting for ~30% of total organic aerosol. In this study, OSs in eastern China were investigated to understand their diurnal evolution, source, and volatility using high-resolution mass spectrometry. In polluted days, we identified a total of 5,147 organic molecules, including 1,206 OS molecules. The average molecular weight (m.w.) and carbon chain length of OSs in this study exceeded the commonly recognized range (500 Da). OSs were mostly composed of newly formed low oxidation state compounds as well as aged aliphatic and aromatic ones. The number and abundance of aromatic and aliphatic OSs with low saturation, volatility, O/Cw as well as H/Cw increased greatly with rising PM2.5 concentrations. The daytime photo-oxidation resulted in a large number of high m.w. (HMW, > 500 Da) OSs. OSs with m.w. <500 Da, and many oxygen atoms were newly generated during the nighttime, mainly dominated by liquid-phase oxidation processes. The result of OSs with higher m.w. and lower volatility was due to increased dimerization and oligomerization. During pollution formatting, OSs with small DBE values (between 0 and 6) appeared; meanwhile, the number of highly unsaturated OSs with DBE > 7 (mainly aromatic OSs) increased by about 34%. This study is useful for clarifying the secondary formation and properties of HMW OSs in a polluted environment in China.

Dissociation constants of relevant secondary organic aerosol components in the atmosphere

The presented studies focus on measuring the determination of the acidity constant (pKa) of relevant secondary organic aerosol components. For our research, we selected important oxidation products (mainly carboxylic acids) of the most abundant terpene compounds, such as α-pinene, β-pinene, β-caryophyllene, and δ-3-carene. The research covered the synthesis and determination of the acidity constant of selected compounds. We used three methods to measure the acidity constant, i.e., 1H NMR titration, pH-metric titration, Bates-Schwarzenbach spectrophotometric method. Moreover, the pKa values were calculated with Marvin 21.17.0 software to compare the experimentally derived values with those calculated from the chemical structure. pKa values measured with 1H NMR titration ranged from 3.51 ± 0.01 for terebic acid to 5.18 ± 0.06 for β-norcaryophyllonic acid. Moreover, the data determined by the 1H NMR method revealed a good correlation with the data obtained with the commonly used potentiometric and UV-spectroscopic methods (R2 = 0.92). In contrast, the comparison with in silico results exhibits a relatively low correlation (R2Marvin = 0.66). We found that most of the values calculated with the Marvin Program are lower than experimental values obtained with pH-metric titration with an average difference of 0.44 pKa units. For di- and tricarboxylic acids, we obtained two and three pKa values, respectively. A good correlation with the literature values was observed, for example, Howell and Fisher (1958) used pH-metric titration and measured pKa1 and pKa2 to be 4.48 and 5.48, while our results are 4.24 ± 0.10 and 5.40 ± 0.02, respectively.

Oligomer formation from cross-reaction of Criegee intermediates in the styrene-isoprene-O3 mixed system

Alkene ozonolysis can produce stabilized Criegee intermediates (SCIs), which play a key role in oligomers' formation. Though styrene and isoprene coexist in the ambient atmosphere as important anthropogenic and biogenic secondary organic aerosol (SOA) precursors, respectively, their cross-reactions have not received attention. This study investigated the interactions of SCIs from styrene and isoprene ozonolysis for the first time. The high-resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometer was used to determine the unique ion mass spectra of the isoprene-styrene-O3 mixture. The results show that the signal intensities of new ions account for >8.4% of total ions in the mass spectra of the styrene-isoprene-O3 mixed system. Styrene and isoprene ozonolysis can produce characteristic C7–SCI and C4–SCI, respectively. C7–SCI and C4–SCI can be involved in the cross-reactions, and the results of tandem mass spectra directly confirmed both C7–SCI and C4–SCI as chain units. The O/C and H/C ratios of cross-products are in the range of 0.38–1.07 and 1.00–1.50, respectively, which are consistent with cross-reaction products. Adding a C7–SCI unit reduces the oligomer's volatility by 1.3–1.4 orders of magnitude lower than adding a C4–SCI unit. Thus, C4–SCI can compete with C7–SCI to react with styrene-derived RO2/RC(O)OH to produce more volatile cross-products, while the less volatile cross-products can be formed when isoprene-derived RO2/RC(O)OH reacted with C7–SCI instead of C4–SCI. The SOA yield of the mixed system is lower than that of the single styrene-O3 system but higher than that of the single isoprene-O3 system. Ambient particles were also collected, and 5 possible SCI-related cross-products were identified. This study illustrates the effects of SCI-related cross-reactions on SOA components and physicochemical properties, providing a basis for future research on SCI-related cross-reactions that frequently occur in the ambient atmosphere.

Biogenic and Anthropogenic Contributions to Atmospheric Organosulfates in a Typical Megacity in Eastern China

AbstractOrganosulfates (OSs) are important components of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) in the atmosphere. Despite the frequent observation of OSs in field and laboratory studies, the sources and detailed formation pathways of these species, particularly in polluted regions, are still not well understood. In this study, a total of 156 ambient PM2.5 filter samples were collected in a Chinese megacity (Shanghai) over four seasons in both 2015–2016 and 2018–2019. More than 270 OS formulas were detected in ambient aerosols using high‐resolution liquid chromatography‐mass spectrometry. Interestingly, a series of alkyl OSs, CnH2n+1O4S− (C5–C11), were observed, which are most likely to be produced from the heterogeneous reactions of organic peroxides with sulfur dioxide or sulfate. The observation of these compounds provides the first field evidence for atmospheric OS formation involving organic peroxides. By employing a positive matrix factorization model, the possible precursors of OSs were classified into six groups, that is, isoprene‐derived, monoterpene‐derived, aromatic, short‐chain aliphatic, long‐chain aliphatic, and anthropogenic C2/C3 OSs. Biogenic (isoprene and monoterpenes) and anthropogenic sources (the remaining factors) contributed to 57.2% and 42.8% of OS formation in 2015–2016, respectively, and their contributions just slightly changed in 2018–2019. In addition, the OS sources exhibited strong seasonality. Isoprene‐derived OSs contributed to the largest fraction of total OSs in summer, while anthropogenic sources dominated OS formation in other seasons. Our findings provide valuable insight into OS sources and formation mechanisms in the atmosphere and highlight the importance of both biogenic and anthropogenic emissions for the formation of OSs in a typical Chinese megacity.

Iron and Copper Alter the Oxidative Potential of Secondary Organic Aerosol: Insights from Online Measurements and Model Development.

The oxidative potential (OP) of particulate matter has been widely suggested as a key metric for describing atmospheric particle toxicity. Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and redox-active transition metals, such as iron and copper, are key drivers of particle OP. However, their relative contributions to OP, as well as the influence of metal-organic interactions and particulate chemistry on OP, remains uncertain. In this work, we simultaneously deploy two novel online instruments for the first time, providing robust quantification of particle OP. We utilize online AA (OPAA) and 2,7-dichlorofluoroscein (ROSDCFH) methods to investigate the influence of Fe(II) and Cu(II) on the OP of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). In addition, we quantify the OH production (OPOH) from these particle mixtures. We observe a range of synergistic and antagonistic interactions when Fe(II) and Cu(II) are mixed with representative biogenic (β-pinene) and anthropogenic (naphthalene) SOA. A newly developed kinetic model revealed key reactions among SOA components, transition metals, and ascorbate, influencing OPAA. Model predictions agree well with OPAA measurements, highlighting metal-ascorbate and -naphthoquinone-ascorbate reactions as important drivers of OPAA. The simultaneous application of multiple OP assays and a kinetic model provides new insights into the influence of metal and SOA interactions on particle OP.

Insight into the crucial reason causing the difference in secondary organic aerosol yields of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with different methyl substituent numbers

The secondary organic aerosol (SOA) yield of toluene photooxidation was reported to substantially higher than that of trimethylbenzene due to the effect of the number of methyl substituents. However, the intrinsic mechanism for this disparity is not clear enough. In this study, a highly-sensitive thermal-desorption photoinduced associative ionization mass spectrometer (TD-PAI-MS) was used to real-time characterize the molecular composition and its evolution of the SOA generated from the photooxidation of toluene and 1,2,3-trimethylbenzene (1,2,3-TMB) in a smog chamber. In the new particle formation (NPF) stage, toluene generated more variety of nucleation precursors, such as benzaldehyde (MW 106) and benzoic acid (MW 122), resulting in a much higher nucleation rate and SOA number concentration. In the SOA growth/aging stage, the key SOA components of toluene were mainly dialdehydes, e.g., 2-oxopropanedial (MW 86) and 4-oxopent-2-enedial (MW 112), which played an important role in the formation of highly oxidized species (HOS) through oligomerization or cyclization reactions. In contrast, due to the presence of more methyl groups, 1,2,3-TMB was inclined to produce ketones, e.g., 2,3-butanedione (MW 86) and 3-methyl-4-oxopent-2-enal (MW 112), which would be cleaved into high-volatility low molecular compounds, e.g., acetic acid, through fragmentation. Taken together, relative to 1,2,3-TMB, the higher nucleation rate during NPF and the significant oligomerization/functionalization process during SOA growth are thought to be the major reasons resulting in the higher SOA yield of toluene. This work provides a reference for the insight into the different SOA yields of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) through further revealing the SOA formation mechanism during toluene and 1,2,3-TMB photooxidation.

Modeling of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) based on two commonly used air quality models in China: Consistent S/IVOCs contribution but large differences in SOA aging

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is an important component of atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM2.5), with contributions from anthropogenic and biogenic volatile organic compounds (AVOC and BVOC) and semi- (SVOC) and intermediate volatility organic compounds (IVOC). Policymakers need to know which SOA precursors are important but accurate simulation of SOA magnitude and contributions remain uncertain. Findings from existing SOA modeling studies have many inconsistencies due to differing emission inventory methodologies/assumptions, air quality model (AQM) algorithms, and other aspects of study methodologies. To address some of the inconsistencies, we investigated the role of different AQM SOA algorithms by applying two commonly used models, CAMx and CMAQ, with consistent emission inventories to simulate SOA concentrations and contributions for July and November 2018 in China. Both models have a volatility basis set (VBS) SOA algorithm but with different parameters and treatments of SOA photochemical aging. SOA generated from BVOC (i.e., BSOA) is found to be more important in southern China. In contrast, SOA generated from anthropogenic precursors is more prevalent in the North China Plain (NCP), Yangtze River Delta (YRD), Sichuan Basin and Central China. Both models indicate negligible SOA formation from SVOC emissions compared to other precursors. In July, when BVOC emissions are abundant, SOA is predominantly contributed by BSOA (except for NCP), followed by IVOC-SOA (i.e., SOA produced from IVOC) and ASOA (i.e., SOA produced from anthropogenic VOC). In contrast, in November, IVOC became the leading SOA contributor for all selected regions except PRD, illustrating the important contribution of IVOC emissions to SOA formation.While both models generally agree in terms of the spatial distributions and seasonal variations of different SOA components, CMAQ tends to predict higher BSOA, while CAMx generates higher ASOA concentrations. As a result, CMAQ results suggest that BSOA concentration is always higher than ASOA in November, while CAMx emphasizes the importance of ASOA. Utilizing a conceptual model, we found that different treatment of SOA aging between the two models is a major cause of differences in simulated ASOA concentrations. The step-wise SOA aging scheme implemented in the CAMx VBS (based on gas-phase reactions with OH radical and similar to other models) exhibits a strong enhancement effect on simulated ASOA concentrations, and this effect increases with the ambient organic aerosol (OA) concentrations. The CMAQ aerosol module implements a different SOA aging scheme that represents particle-phase oligomerization and has smaller impacts on total OA. Different structures and/or parameters of the SOA aging schemes are being used in current models, which could greatly affect model simulations of OA in ways that are difficult to anticipate. Our results indicate that future control policies should aim at reducing IVOC emissions as well as traditional VOC emissions. In addition, aging schemes are the major driver in CMAQ vs. CAMx treatments of ASOA and their resulting predicted mass. More sophisticated measurement data (e.g., with resolved OA components) and/or chamber experiments (e.g., investigating how aging influences SOA yields) are needed to better characterize SOA aging and constrain model parameterizations.

Secondary aerosol formation in incense burning particles by O3 and OH oxidation via single particle mixing state analysis

Incense burning is a common religious activity that emits abundant gaseous and particulate pollutants into the atmosphere. During their atmospheric lifetime, these gases and particles are subjected to oxidation, leading to the formation of secondary pollutants. We examined the oxidation of incense burning plumes under O3 exposure and dark condition using an oxidation flow reactor connected to a single particle aerosol mass spectrometer (SPAMS). Nitrate formation was observed in incense burning particles, mainly attributable to the ozonolysis of nitrogen-containing organic compounds. With UV on, nitrate formation was significantly enhanced, likely due to HNO3/HNO2/NOx uptake triggered by OH chemistry, which is more effective than ozone oxidation. The extent of nitrate formation is insensitive to O3 and OH exposure, possibly due to the diffusion limitation on interfacial uptake. The O3-UV-aged particles are more oxygenated and functionalized than O3-Dark-aged particles. Oxalate and malonate, two typical secondary organic aerosol (SOA) components, were found in O3-UV-aged particles. Our work reveals that nitrate, accompanied by SOA, can rapidly form in incense-burning particles upon photochemical oxidation in the atmosphere, which could deepen our understanding of air pollution caused by religious activities.

Glass Transition Temperatures of Organic Mixtures from Isoprene Epoxydiol-Derived Secondary Organic Aerosol.

The phase states and glass transition temperatures (Tg) of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) particles are important to resolve for understanding the formation, growth, and fate of SOA as well as their cloud formation properties. Currently, there is a limited understanding of how Tg changes with the composition of organic and inorganic components of atmospheric aerosol. Using broadband dielectric spectroscopy, we measured the Tg of organic mixtures containing isoprene epoxydiol (IEPOX)-derived SOA components, including 2-methyltetrols (2-MT), 2-methyltetrol-sulfate (2-MTS), and 3-methyltetrol-sulfate (3-MTS). The results demonstrate that the Tg of mixtures depends on their composition. The Kwei equation, a modified Gordon-Taylor equation with an added quadratic term and a fitting parameter representing strong intermolecular interactions, provides a good fit for the Tg-composition relationship of complex mixtures. By combining Raman spectroscopy with geometry optimization simulations obtained using density functional theory, we demonstrate that the non-linear deviation of Tg as a function of composition may be caused by changes in the extent of hydrogen bonding in the mixture.

Aqueous-phase photo-oxidation of selected green leaf volatiles initiated by [rad]OH radicals: Products and atmospheric implications

C5- and C6- unsaturated oxygenated organic compounds emitted by plants under stress like cutting, freezing or drying, known as Green Leaf Volatiles (GLVs), may clear some of the existing uncertainties in secondary organic aerosol (SOA) budget. The transformations of GLVs are a potential source of SOA components through photo-oxidation processes occurring in the atmospheric aqueous phase. Here, we investigated the aqueous photo-oxidation products from three abundant GLVs (1-penten-3-ol, (Z)-2-hexen-1-ol, and (E)-2-hexen-1-al) induced by OH radicals, carried out in a photo-reactor under simulated solar conditions. The aqueous reaction samples were analyzed using advanced hyphenated mass spectrometry techniques: capillary gas chromatography mass spectrometry (c-GC–MS); and reversed-phase liquid chromatography high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS). Using carbonyl-targeted c-GC–MS analysis, we confirmed the presence of propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde, 1-penten-3-one, and 2-hexen-1-al in the reaction samples. The LC-HRMS analysis confirmed the presence of a new carbonyl product with the molecular formula C6H10O2, which probably bears the hydroxyhexenal or hydroxyhexenone structure. Density functional theory (DFT)-based quantum calculations were used to evaluate the experimental data and obtain insight into the formation mechanism and structures of the identified oxidation products via the addition and hydrogen-abstraction pathways. DFT calculations highlighted the importance of the hydrogen abstraction pathway leading to the new product C6H10O2. Atmospheric relevance of the identified products was evaluated using a set of physical property data like Henry's law constant (HLC) and vapor pressure (VP). The unknown product of molecular formula C6H10O2 has higher HLC and lower VP than the parent GLV and thus has potential to remain in the aqueous phase leading to possible aqueous SOA formation. Other observed carbonyl products are likely first stage oxidation products and precursors of aged SOA.

Molecular and Structural Characterization of Isomeric Compounds in Atmospheric Organic Aerosol Using Ion Mobility-Mass Spectrometry.

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formed through multiphase atmospheric chemistry makes up a large fraction of airborne particles. The chemical composition and molecular structures of SOA constituents vary between different emission sources and aging processes in the atmosphere, which complicates their identification. In this work, we employ drift tube ion mobility spectrometry with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (IM-MS) detection for rapid gas-phase separation and multidimensional characterization of isomers in two biogenic SOAs produced from ozonolysis of isomeric monoterpenes, d-limonene (LSOA) and α-pinene (PSOA). SOA samples were ionized using electrospray ionization (ESI) and characterized using IM-MS in both positive and negative ionization modes. The IM-derived collision cross sections in nitrogen gas (DTCCSN2 ) for individual SOA components were obtained using multifield and single-field measurements. A novel application of IM multiplexing/high-resolution demultiplexing methodology was employed to increase sensitivity, improve peak shapes, and augment mobility baseline resolution, which revealed several isomeric structures for the measured ions. For LSOA and PSOA samples, we report significant structural differences of the isomer structures. Molecular structural calculations using density functional theory combined with the theoretical modeling of CCS values provide insights into the structural differences between LSOA and PSOA constituents. The average DTCCSN2 values for monomeric SOA components observed as [M + Na]+ ions are 3-6% higher than those of their [M - H]- counterparts. Meanwhile, dimeric and trimeric isomer components in both samples showed an inverse trend with the relevant values of [M - H]- ions being 3-7% higher than their [M + Na]+ counterparts, respectively. The results indicate that the structures of Na+-coordinated oligomeric ions are more compact than those of the corresponding deprotonated species. The coordination with Na+ occurs on the oxygen atoms of the carbonyl groups leading to a compact configuration. Meanwhile, deprotonated molecules have higher DTCCSN2 values due to their elongated structures in the gas phase. Therefore, DTCCSN2 values of isomers in SOA mixtures depend strongly on the mode of ionization in ESI. Additionally, PSOA monomers and dimers exhibit larger DTCCSN2 values (1-4%) than their LSOA counterparts owing to more rigid structures. A cyclobutane ring is present with functional groups pointing in opposite directions in PSOA compounds, as compared to noncyclic flexible LSOA structures, forming more compact ions in the gas phase. Lastly, we investigated the effects of direct photolysis on the chemical transformations of selected individual PSOA components. We use IM-MS to reveal structural changes associated with aerosol aging by photolysis. This study illustrates the detailed molecular and structural descriptors for the detection and annotation of structural isomers in complex SOA mixtures.

Heterogeneous Formation of Organonitrates (ON) and Nitroxy-Organosulfates (NOS) from Adsorbed α-Pinene-Derived Organosulfates (OS) on Mineral Surfaces.

Organonitrates (ON) and nitroxy-organosulfates (NOS) are important components of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs). Gas-phase reactions of α-pinene (C10H16), a primary precursor for several ON compounds, are fairly well understood although formation pathways for NOS largely remain unknown. NOS formation may occur via reactions of ON and organic peroxides with sulfates as well as through radical-initiated photochemical processes. Despite the fact that organosulfates (OS) represent a significant portion of the organic aerosol mass, ON and NOS formation from OS is less understood, especially through nighttime heterogeneous and multiphase chemistry pathways. In the current study, surface reactions of adsorbed α-pinene-derived OS with nitrogen oxides on hematite and kaolinite surfaces, common components of mineral dust, have been investigated. α-Pinene reacts with sulfated mineral surfaces, forming a range of OS compounds on the surface. These OS compounds when adsorbed on mineral surfaces can further react with HNO3 and NO2, producing several ON and NOS compounds as well as several oxidation products. Overall, this study reveals the complexity of reactions of prevalent organic compounds leading to the formation of OS, ON, and NOS via heterogeneous and multiphase reaction pathways on mineral surfaces. It is also shown that this chemistry is mineralogy-specific.
