Dynamic reliability evaluation of TBM components in tunnel construction

The complex geological conditions in tunnels pose a huge challenge to the reliability of tunnel boring machine (TBM). However, existing reliability studies typically focus on core structures such as cutters and cutterheads, with less consideration given to the rest of the components that frequently fail. In this study, the reliability analysis and dynamic evaluation of TBM components with high failure rates are carried out relying on the Shanxi Central Yellow River Diversion Project. The life distribution and reliability variation characteristics of TBM components under different rock mass classes are investigated in terms of tunnelling time and tunnelling distance as two types of life data indexes. And the life index which is more suitable for the reliability evaluation of TBM components is identified by comparison. On this basis, a dynamic evaluation method for the reliability of TBM components under the condition of multi‐classes surrounding rock is proposed. This method can quickly evaluate the current reliability of TBM components and serve as the basis for preventive maintenance. The results of this study play a certain role in supplementing the reliability research of TBM and also provide a scientific basis for optimizing the design and maintenance strategy of TBM components.

Assessment of sustainability of natural complexes of the Minyarsky physiographic region of the Western slope of the Southern Urals

The article considers the evaluation of sustainability of natural complexes of low-mountain sections of the western slope of the Southern Urals (Minyarsk physical and geographical area) on the basis of analysis of landscape profiles on the indicator of sustainability of natural complexes. Peculiarities of the study area are highlighted: specific climatic conditions, complex geological and geomorphological conditions with ongoing industrial development, as well as a variety of soil and hydrological conditions combined with anthropogenic transformation of the territory. In the course of landscape profiling, as well as the application of methods of assessment of anthropogenic transformation of landscapes (at the level of the terrain), a decrease of diversity in natural complexes on the studied slopes was established, Replacement of typical plant communities by secondary successional communities in lowland areas dominated by horsetail. It has also been established that the aggregate of conditions in natural complexes indicates anthropogenic transformation of slope landscapes, the aggregate leading factor of which is the geochemical position on the element of the slope, Low resistance to external influence of the soil with a rinsing type of water regime defining plant associations. The obtained materials can be used as a basis for analysis of ecological condition of landscapes of the western slope of the Southern Urals, as well as characteristics of slope types of locations. Materials allow to further assess the recreational attractiveness of landscapes and the choice of ways of natural use of the studied area.

Research Trends and ‘Space-Sky-Ground-Underground’ Monitoring Technology Analysis of Landslide Hazard

Landslide is a typical geological disaster distributed in most countries worldwide. Due to long-term natural weathering and human engineering disturbances, the instability of landslides is prone to occur. Once monitoring and disposal methods are implemented inappropriately, they can lead to landslide hazards, seriously threatening the safety of people’s lives and property. For a long time, extensive research on landslide monitoring has been conducted from various countries, providing crucial technical support for reducing the incidence and severity of landslide hazards. However, considering the complex geological conditions of actual landslides and the direct impact of internal and external factors such as rainfall, storms, and earthquakes, the early warning accuracy of landslide hazards is still relatively low. Therefore, based on advanced research achievements, it is significant to carry out research on the current status and development trends of landslide monitoring technology. Based on the Web of Science core database, this study quantitatively analyzes the advanced research achievements in global landslide monitoring in the past decade using bibliometric analysis. A systematic analysis of landslide monitoring technology development is conducted according to each study’s publication time, keywords, and countries. On this basis, a multi-dimensional monitoring system for landslides was proposed, which utilizes the complementary advantages of multi-dimensional monitoring technology to achieve all-round, high-precision, and real-time monitoring of landslides. Finally, taking the Xinpu landslide in the Three Gorges Region of China as an example, a multi-source and multi-field-monitoring experiment was conducted. The application of landslide multi-field-monitoring technology provides an essential reference for monitoring, early warning, as well as the scientific prevention and control of landslide hazard.

The Fuyu reservoir in Xinmin area is a delta plane-front facies deposit, and the channel sand body in this area is the main reservoir of oil and gas. Due to the complex sedimentary environment, the sand body shows great variation in thickness and distribution. In this study, the method of combining well vibration, model forward modeling and stratum slicing are used to predict the sandstone bodies of different thickness successfully. Especially for the thin sand body with a thickness of less than 5 meters, this study found that the GR curve can effectively distinguish sandstone and mudstone through the intersection analysis of logging curves, and applied the GR curve co-simulation inversion technology to perform fine characterization. In addition, the study also reveals that the northeastward twisting fault zone in Xinmin area is a favorable accumulation area of the reservoir, which provides a new direction for oil and gas exploration. This study not only improves the accuracy of sandstone prediction, but also provides a valuable reference for oil and gas exploration under similar complex geological conditions.

New strategy to optimize in-situ fenton oxidation for TPH contaminated soil remediation via artificial neural network approach

In-situ remediation of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) contaminated soils via Fenton oxidation is a promising approach. However, determining the proper injection amount of H2O2 and Fe source over the Fenton reaction in the complex geological conditions for in-situ TPH soil remediation remains a daunting challenge. Herein, we introduced a practical and novel approach using soft computational models, a multilayer perception artificial neural network (MPLNN), for predicting the TPH removal performance. In this study, we conducted 48 sets of TPH removal experiments using Fenton oxidation to determine the TPH removal performance of a wide range of different ground conditions and generated 336 data points. As a result, a negative Pearson correlation coefficient was obtained in the Fe injection mass and the natural presence of Fe mineral in the soil, indicating that the excess of Fe could significantly retarded the TPH removal performance in the Fenton reaction. In addition, the MPLNN model with 6-6-1 training using Scaled conjugate gradient backpropagation (SCG) with tangent sigmoid as the transfer function demonstrated a high accuracy for TPH removal prediction with the correlation determination of 0.974 and mean square error value of 0.0259. The optimized MPLNN model achieved less than 20% error for predicting TPH removal performance in actual TPH-contaminated soil via Fenton oxidation. Hence, the proposed MPLNN can be useful in improving the Fenton oxidation of TPH removal performance in-situ soil remediation.

Integrated Risk Assessment of Mountainous Long-Distance Oil and Gas Pipelines Based on Multisource Spatial Data.

Pipeline risk assessment is crucial for pipeline safety management and operation. The aim of this study is to develop a comprehensive assessment model that accurately evaluates pipeline risks and ensures the safe and reliable operation of the pipeline system. The model is based on multisource spatial data and is primarily applicable to long-distance oil and gas pipelines that traverse complex geological conditions in mountainous areas. The research is conducted using the example of the Jinliwen natural gas pipeline in Zhejiang Province, China. By analyzing the geological data of the study area and the potential risks that the pipeline may encounter, a comprehensive risk assessment indicator system for the pipeline was developed using slope units to divide pipeline sections. The pipeline risk levels are classified using the K-means clustering-entropy weighted-random forest algorithm. The model is evaluated using accuracy (Acc), precision (Pre), recall (R), F1-score, and the ROC curve. The results show that the model has an accuracy of 0.917, a precision of 0.92, a recall of 0.916, an F1-score of 0.914, and an AUC (Area Under Curve) of 0.93, indicating its strong predictive capability. The risk assessment results demonstrate a strong consistency when compared with actual incident events. This indicates that the constructed model effectively reflects the influencing factors of pipeline risk, providing a basis for pipeline risk assessment and disaster prevention and mitigation efforts in similar regions.

Endogeneous fire occurences in Zenica coal mines are directly linked to complex natural conditions reflecting in complex geological conditions, great depth of mining, high methane content in coal seams, and tendency of coal to spontaneous oxidation process. The subject of the paper is the analysis of endogenous fire supression method applyed in conditions of complete coal thickness longwall mining in Raspotočje mine, that has been rehabilitiated upon the endogeneous fire and then reactivated. The following methods were used in fire fighting: passive fire fighting methods (sealing of the area affected by the fire), active method (injection of electrofilter ash) and ventilation methods. Furthermore additional data (position of gob area and sealing objects, air flow regulators, routes of possible air migration, suggested technical solutions, etc) were added in the linear and canonic schemes for the purpose of defining efficient solutions for fire fighting. Microscopic Mechanism and Percolation Model of Dynamic Deposition of Elemental Sulfur Particles in Acidic Gas Reservoirs.

The dissolution of elemental sulfur in acidic gas leads to its precipitation as gas pressure decreases, thereby causing potential damage to the formation due to the deposition of sulfur particles. Previous sulfur deposition prediction models often relied on the solubility of sulfur in acidic gas and the stress state of sulfur particles to determine the occurrence of deposition, thus establishing predictive models. However, in the presence of complex geological conditions, the multiphase flow through porous media and the adsorption of particles on pore throat walls can also influence sulfur particle deposition to some degree. It is well known that sulfur particle deposition during gas reservoir development exhibits instability, with multiple factors influencing the deposited sulfur particles. Particularly noteworthy is the influence of airflow velocity, which can resuspend sulfur particles that are physically adsorbed on pore throat surfaces, thereby reintegrating them into the gas phase. Additionally, the dynamic deposition of larger sulfur particles involves a dynamic process. This study elucidates the dynamic process of sulfur deposition by considering the diverse transport dynamics of sulfur particles. Physical adsorption and desorption behaviors of sulfur particles are determined based on variations in reservoir conditions. The desorption status of sulfur particles with different particle sizes within the formation is established by evaluating the equilibrium between the force exerted on the pore throat wall and the suspension force generated by gas flow. The critical conditions for sulfur deposition in Yuanba gas reservoir were obtained by substituting on-site parameters into calculations. Moreover, a mathematical model is proposed to describe the dynamic deposition and migration of sulfur particles, adopting principles from continuous porous media porous flow theory, fluid flow mass conservation, as well as sulfur particle desorption and migration. The formulated model is solved, and its resulting solution process and outcomes hold significant implications for numerical simulation and predictive assessment of the development impact on gas reservoirs, particularly in later stages.

Uncertainty of microseismic sources identification and probabilistic location in underground excavation

Microseismic (MS) source location is an integral component of MS technology and essential to understanding the rock failure mechanism and avoiding potential geological hazards in underground rock excavation. However, accurate location remains challenging owing to the complex geological conditions and unknown rock failure mechanisms. In this study, a novel location framework was developed to locate the MS source positions and their uncertainties based on probabilistic programming. Probabilistic programming was utilized to determine the coordinates of the MS source and its variation using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method based on the waveform equation. A classical benchmark problem was utilized to verify and illustrate the developed framework. The developed framework can not only locate the position of the MS source but also determine its variation due to the uncertainty during the monitoring and excavation. The located MS source is in agreement with the actual positions. The results show that the developed framework is a scientific, accurate, reasonable, and promising tool for the location of MS sources. Then, the developed framework was applied to locate the position of the blasting in a practical mine. This further proved that the developed framework could locate the MS source, providing an excellent uncertainty analysis tool for underground rock excavation.

Research Progress and Visualization Analysis of Spontaneous Combustion of Water-Immersed Coal

ABSTRACT One of the most catastrophic events that can occur during coal mining is a fire triggered by spontaneous combustion of the coal. Due to complex geological conditions, some coal mines in China have the characteristics of shallow burial and small spacing between coal seams. With the increase of mining depth, there will be many cracks in the overlying goaf. Surface water and groundwater flow into the goaf along these fissures. After long-term water immersion, the increase of ground temperature will lead to the spontaneous combustion of coal. A thorough analysis of the impact of water immersion on the spontaneous combustion of coal necessitates a review of the most recent findings in this field. The review will promote the further development of the theory and prevention of spontaneous combustion of water-immersed coal and provide theoretical help for monitoring and preventing spontaneous combustion of water-immersed coal. The creation of water-immersed coal and the reason for spontaneous combustion is investigated, as are the characteristics of the water accumulation in the goaf and their origins. The research status of spontaneous combustion of water-immersed coal is presented and illustrated domestically and internationally. On this basis, the theoretical and experimental research directions, problems, and prospects of spontaneous combustion of water-immersed coal are put forward. This study can provide a theoretical basis for monitoring, preventing, and controlling the spontaneous combustion of water-immersed coal, and provide a reference for reducing energy waste.

Leakage is a common issue in reservoirs; however, accurately detecting its location and seepage diameter can be challenging owing to complex geological conditions. Three-dimensional (3D) resistivity tomography (RT), as opposed to traditional resistivity technology, offers advantages such as high observation density, efficiency, information richness, resolution, and intelligence. This study focuses on the application of 3D RT to diagnose leakage in earth and rock embankment dams. By monitoring the resistance change rate obtained from resistivity image processing, this study accurately assessed the development status of the hidden bodies. This research demonstrates that 3D RT enables rapid comparison of deformation and damage states at different moments, enabling continuous and objective monitoring of earth and rock embankment dams. This technology is comprehensive and provides real-time insights.

Research on the interaction between trench material and pipeline under fault displacement

With the large-scale construction of oil and gas pipelines, the safety issues of long-distance buried pipelines in the service and construction have become increasingly prominent. The complex geological and topographical conditions of the special zone will put forwards extremely high requirements on pipe trench laying backfill materials and construction technology. For example, pipelines are inevitable to cross the active fault, while the trench backfilled with soil has limitations in protecting them from failure under the active fault displacement caused by the earthquake. Therefore, it is necessary to study the pipe–soil interaction mechanism, determine the stress state of the pipeline and propose a new backfilling material that can protect the pipeline from failure. Foam concrete (FC) provides a new choice to backfill the buried pipeline trench due to its high-homogeneity, lightweight, controllable-strength, and self-compacting. To further determine the applicability of the FC, the pipe-FC interaction mechanism is studied. Then, a FE model of the FC-pipeline-soil interaction system is established by Abaqus to quantitatively analyze the applicability of the FC based on the experimental data of the mechanical performance of the FC. It proves that using FC as trench backfill material has a noticeable protective effect on the pipeline under the earthquake-induced displacement of the normal fault. Furthermore, FC has a better protective effect on the pipeline subjected to compressive than tensile. Therefore, the reference for applying FC in trench backfilling of pipelines crossing normal fault is provided.

Examination of Operational Methods for a Low-Temperature Aquifer Thermal Storage Air Conditioning System Based on Operational Performance and Considerations of Thermal Storage and Pumping Volume Balance

Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) systems are garnering attention as high-efficiency air conditioning technologies that contribute to the realization of a carbon-neutral society. This study focuses on an ATES system constructed in Japan, characterized by its complex geological conditions and thin aquifer layers. Detailed actual performance data measured over four years are presented, and performance analysis results show that a COP of 5 was achieved for the overall building cooling and heating system. In addition, the study provides a detailed analysis of the imbalance in heat quantity, remaining heat storage, and other factors based on actual data, identifying operational issues and summarizing specific improvement measures. Finally, as a proposal for a sustainable operational method to balance the cumulative heat storage and pumping volume of cold and hot water, specific operational procedures are summarized, including setting the return water temperature for the next season based on the dimensionless average pumping temperature of the previous season, and a flowchart is presented. There is no prior research that shows such specific operational procedures, and this can be considered an important achievement of this study.

Penetration Characteristics of Mono-Column Composite Bucket Foundation for Offshore Wind Turbines

To address the issue of seepage and soil plugging during the sinking of mono-column composite bucket foundations (MCCBFs), experiments were conducted on the installation of foundations under a variety of complex geological conditions. The effect of negative pressure sinking mode on the foundation’s seepage field was analyzed, the formation mechanism of soil plugging in sand was explained, and an efficient method for calculating the height of soil plugging was proposed in conjunction with these investigations. The findings demonstrate that the finite element method simulation of the soil’s seepage field is the most accurate, that the pumping volume of the foundation during sinking through is high, that the formation of the soil plug height is high, and that clear depressions can be seen on the foundation manifold’s exterior. The equation presented in this study makes it easier to forecast the height of a foundation plug and can offer direction for engineering design.

Influence of geological uncertainty on longitudinal deformation of tunnel based on improved coupled Markov chain

The complex geological condition encountered during excavation is the key challenge for tunneling projects. Therefore, tunnel design and construction require a comprehensive understanding of the subsurface geology. This study aims to reveal the effect of geological uncertainty on tunnel longitudinal deformation based on a reconstruction geological model using the improved coupled Markov chain method. The improved coupled Markov chain method makes the predicted results more suitable for the possible stratigraphic distribution by optimizing the transition probability matrix, and breaks through the limitations of non-coaxial predicted cell updating in traditional methods. A mapping method was proposed to establish a matching relationship between the irregular grids of the geological model and the numerical tunnel model. Then, a long tunnel in Shenzhen was selected as a case study to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework. The correlation coefficient was used to verify the relationship between tunnel deformation and the surrounding stratum with different tunnel cover depths. The geological uncertainty of various strata was quantitatively measured based on the proposed geological uncertainty index. The three-dimensional strata surrounding the tunnel were reconstructed based on exceedance probabilities for adverse geological conditions. Quantitative analysis was conducted on the tunnel vertical convergence during the excavation process.
