Total fatty-acid (FA) contents of different organs (stomach, liver, brain, and skin) of two Antarctic fish, marbled rockcod (Notothenia rossii) and mackerel icefish (Champsocephalus gunnari), were examined using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). N. rossii possessed higher contents of total omega-3, where eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the most represented omega-3 FAs, were distributed throughout all parts of the fish. The highest level of EPA was observed in the skin and that of DHA was observed in the brain of N. rossii. C. gunnari showed organ peculiarity in that most of the omega-3 FAs were found in stomach and skin. Specifically, the highest levels of EPA and DHA were both observed in the stomach. Although N. rossii and C. gunnari both inhabit the Antarctic Southern Oceans, their characteristics in terms of the composition of fatty acids were shown to vary. The extracts were also evaluated for matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1)-inhibitory activities in UVB-induced human dermal fibroblasts, where extracts of the skin and liver of N. rossii showed the most significant inhibition upon MMP-1 production. These findings provide experimental evidence that the extracts of the Antarctic fish could be utilized as bioactive nutrients, particularly in the enhancement of skin health.

Comparison of Fatty Acid Contents in Major Lipid Classes of Seven Salmonid Species from Siberian Arctic Lakes.

Long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) essential for human nutrition are mostly obtained from wild-caught fish. To sustain the LC-PUFA supply from natural populations, one needs to know how environmental and intrinsic factors affect fish fatty acid (FA) profiles and contents. We studied seven Salmoniformes species from two arctic lakes. We aimed to estimate differences in the FA composition of total lipids and two major lipid classes, polar lipids (PL) and triacylglycerols (TAG), among the species and to evaluate LC-PUFA contents corresponding to PL and TAG in muscles. Fatty acid profiles of PL and TAG in all species were characterized by the prevalence of omega-3 LC-PUFA and C16-C18 monoenoic FA, respectively. Fish with similar feeding spectra were identified similarly in multivariate analyses of total lipids, TAG and PL, due to differences in levels of mostly the same FA. Thus, the suitability of both TAG and total lipids for the identification of the feeding spectra of fish was confirmed. All species had similar content of LC-PUFA esterified as PL, 1.9–3.5 mg g−1, while the content of the TAG form strongly varied, from 0.9 to 9.8 mg g−1. The LC-PUFA-rich fish species accumulated these valuable compounds predominately in the TAG form.

ObjectivesMarbling impacts eating quality and consumer preference of beef as it intensifies flavor, and improves tenderness and juiciness. Triglycerides are the predominate lipid in beef and are considered neutral fatty acids, whereas polar fatty acids are found in the phospholipid portion of beef. Diet of cattle during the finishing period can impact type and saturation of fatty acids in meat.The objective of this research was to evaluate differences in neutral and polar lipid fatty acid content from grass-fed and grain-fed beef of varying quality grades sourced from New Zealand and the United States, respectively.Materials and MethodsBeef strip loins (n = 200) representing two fed cattle types (n = 100/finishing type: grass-finished and grain-finished) and five different USDA quality grades (n = 20 per quality grade: USDA Standard, Select, Low Choice, “Top” Choice: High and Average Choice, and Prime) were acquired from beef processing facilities in New Zealand (grass-fed) and Nebraska (grain-fed). A face steak was cut from the anterior end of each strip loin for fatty acid analysis. Face steaks (n = 200) were frozen and stored at the Gordon W. Davis Meat Science Laboratory until further fabrication. Samples were thawed for 12 to 24 h, trimmed of subcutaneous fat and connective tissue and ground. The ground sample was frozen in liquid nitrogen and homogenized for fatty acid analysis. Lipids were extracted, fractionated into neutral lipid (NL) and polar lipid (PL), derivatized to fatty acid methyl esters and determined by gas chromatography.Statistical analyses were conducted using the procedures of SAS (Version 9.3; SAS Inst. Inc., Cary, NC). Treatment comparisons were tested for significance using PROC GLIMMIX with α = 0.05.ResultsInteractions of cattle diet × marbling level affected the overall concentrations (mg/g) of NL saturated fatty acids (SFA), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) (P < 0.05). Saturated fatty acid and MUFA NL concentration decreased as marbling level decreased, as grain-fed Prime was higher (P < 0.05) than all other treatments. Grain-finished and grass-finished Standard had the lowest (P < 0.05) SFA and MUFA NL concentration compared to all other treatments. Concentration of PUFA NL was higher (P < 0.05) for grain-finished Prime than grain-finished Top Choice and grass-finished Prime. No difference was found between grain-finished Low Choice and Select and grass-finished Top Choice NL concentration (P > 0.05), however all were higher (P < 0.05) than grass-finished and grain-finished Standard and grass-finished Select. A cattle diet × marbling level interaction affected the overall PL concentrations of SFA and MUFA (P < 0.05), but not PUFA (P > 0.05). Generally, polar fatty acid content increased as marbling increased for SFA and MUFA. Grain-finished PUFA PL concentration was higher (P < 0.05) than grass-finished samples. Additionally, PUFA PL concentration increased as quality grade decreased (P < 0.05).ConclusionIn conclusion, polar and neutral fatty acid content increased with increasing quality grades except for PL polyunsaturated fatty acids. Additionally, grain-finished beef steaks generally contained a higher SFA and MUFA NL concentration than grass-finished beef steaks for all quality grades except Low Choice and Top Choice.

Comparison of fatty acid content in Camellia oleifera (L.) Kuntze oil and olive oil by GC

The comparison of fatty acid content in Camellia oleifera (L.) Kuntze oil and olive oil was done by GC. C. oleifera oil contained more C18:1n9c, C18:2n6c, C20:1 and C22:1n9 than olive oil. Olive oil did not contain C21:0 and C24:1 but more C8:0, C16:0, C16:1, C18:0, C18:3n6, C18:3n3, C20:2, C22:0, C23:0 and C24:0 than C. oleifera oil, C. oleifera oil did not contain C20:2. C. oleifera oil and olive oil are beneficial for human health for their unsaturated fatty acids content and C. oleifera oil is healthy than olive oil. Comparison of fatty acid content of fresh and frozen fillets of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Walbaum

The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the percentage content of fatty acids (FA) of 54 rainbow trout fresh and frozen fillets. Frozen fillets were stored at -15ºC for 45 and 90 days. Saturated (SFA), monounsaturated (MUFA), polyunsaturated (PUFA), omega-6 (n-6) and omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids were determined by gas chromatograph coupled to mass spectrometry. The results indicated that during frozen storage, SFA and MUFA content increased by 32.63 and 9.25%, respectively, while PUFA content decreased by 25.3%, n-6 by 12.4% and n-3 by 32.55%. These changes were more significant (P ≤ 0.05) during the first 45 d of storage. It was concluded that the frozen storage had a negative impact on meat quality of rainbow trout due to the reduction of PUFA, n-3/n-6, polyene index and PUFA/ SFA and the increase of the SFA, and atherogenic and thrombogenic indexes, which meant a substantial loss of nutritional value in the fillets of rainbow trout.

Comparison of fatty acid contents of the neutral and phospholipids of the trematode Paramphistomum cervi and liver of its host, Capra hircus.

The present observation records the lipid classes and their fatty acid composition of the neutral lipid and phospholipid of the trematode Paramphistomum cervi and liver of its host Capra hircus, the common Indian goat. Thin Layer Chromatography and Gas Liquid Chromatography were used to identify different neutral lipid and phospholipid components. The results show that among the neutral lipid fractions, the amount of combined hydrocarbon, wax ester and steryl ester is more or less equal in parasite and its host, but the percent of triacylglycerol is more in host liver than the parasite and the percent of total sterol is more in parasite than that of its host liver. Among the phospholipid fractions, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylethanolamine in the trematode parasite P. cervi and phosphatidylcholine and cardiolipin in the host's liver are the major components. The predominant fatty acids in the neutral lipid and phospholipid fractions of both the host liver and the trematode P. cervi include C16:0, C18:0, C18:1, and C18:2. The results reveal that the parasite P. cervi take up almost all the lipid and fatty acids from their host, which is required for their life cycle.

Comparison of fatty acid contents and composition in major lipid classes of larvae and adults of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) from a steppe region

Emerging aquatic insects, including mosquitoes, are known to transfer to terrestrial ecosystems specific essential biochemicals, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). We studied fatty acid (FA) composition and contents of dominant mosquito populations (Diptera: Culicidae), that is, Anopheles messeae, Ochlerotatus caspius, Oc. flavescens, Oc. euedes, Oc. subdiversus, Oc. cataphylla, and Aedes cinereus, inhabited a steppe wetland of a temperate climate zone to fill up the gap in their lipid knowledge. The polar lipid and triacylglycerol fractions of larvae and adults were compared. In most studied mosquito species, we first found and identified a number of short-chain PUFA, for example, prominent 14:2n-6 and 14:3n-3, which were not earlier documented in living organisms. These PUFA, although occurred in low levels in adult mosquitoes, can be potentially used as markers of mosquito biomass in terrestrial food webs. We hypothesize that these acids might be synthesized (or retroconverted) by the mosquitoes. Using FA trophic markers accumulated in triacylglycerols, trophic relations of the mosquitoes were accessed. The larval diet comprised green algae, cryptophytes, and dinoflagellates and provided the mosquitoes with essential n-3 PUFA, linolenic, and eicosapentaenoic acids. As a result, both larvae and adults of the studied mosquitoes had comparatively high content of the essential PUFA. Comparison of FA proportions in polar lipids versus storage lipids shown that during mosquito metamorphosis transfer of essential eicosapentaenoic and arachidonic acids from the reserve in storage lipids of larvae to functional polar lipids in adults occurred.

Comparison of Fatty Acid Contents of Erythrocyte Membrane in Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis Patients

Membrane fatty acid composition plays an important role in the cellular function. Erythrocyte fatty acid composition mirrors that of myocardium and is influenced by diet. Earlier studies have shown significant alterations of membrane fatty acid composition in ethnically mixed patients with end-stage renal disease. Given the impact of ethnic and dietary factors, we sought to examine membrane fatty acid composition in an ethnically homogeneous end-stage renal disease population residing in a coastal region of Korea with high fish consumption. Cross-sectional study. Outpatient facility at Dong-A University Hospital, Busan, Republic of Korea. We recruited 15 stable hemodialysis patients, 14 peritoneal dialysis patients, and 10 age- and gender-matched normal controls. Patients with significant malnutrition, short duration of dialysis, recent infection, malignancy, or liver disease were excluded. Dietary intake and use of omega-3 fatty acid supplements were determined. Erythrocyte membrane fatty acid contents measured by gas chromatography. Palmitoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid levels were lower, whereas oleic acid, linoleic acid, and arachidonic acid levels were higher in patients with end-stage renal disease compared with the control group. Total monounsaturated fatty acids (palmitoleic acid and oleic acid) were significantly higher in peritoneal dialysis than in hemodialysis patients. Eicosapentaenoic acid and omega-3 docosapentaenoic acid were significantly higher, but total omega-6 fatty acids, omega-6/omega-3, and arachidonic acid/eicosapentaenoic acid ratios were significantly lower in hemodialysis patients consuming omega-3 supplements compared with those who did not. Patients with end-stage renal disease exhibited significant alterations in erythrocyte membrane fatty acids, which were partially modified by the dialysis modality and omega-3 fatty acid supplementation.

Comparison of fatty acid contents of wild and cultured rainbow trout Onchorhynchus mykiss in Turkey

The total lipid content and fatty acid composition were determined in the flesh and skin of wild and cultured rainbow trout in Turkey. The effect of diet content was also investigated on cultured trout. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used for fatty acid analyses. Total lipid content of skin was higher than flesh in both types and when compared appreciably higher in cultured fish. The predominant fatty acid was palmitic acid (C16∶0) in saturated fatty acids and oleic acid (C18∶1n−9) in monounsaturated fatty acids. The amount of eicosapentaenoic acid was double in wild and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) 1.5 times higher in cultured fish flesh. The n−3/n−6 ratio was higher in cultured fish than wild fish. The levels of palmitic, oleic, linoleic (C18∶2n−6) and palmitoleic (C16∶1n−7) acids were high in skin. The level of EPA was the same in skin of wild fish but 5.5 times higher in cultured fish, where as the proportion of DHA in skin was lower for wild and 3.5 times higher in cultured fish. Wild fish had a high level of linoleic, arachidonic (C20∶4n−6) and linolenic (C18∶3n−3) acids. The total amount of n−3 and n−6 polyunsaturated fatty acids was higher in flesh of wild fish than cultured fish, contrary to skin of cultured fish. The data obtained demonstrated that fatty acid composition of cultured fish did not depend on that of feed.

Comparison of Fatty Acid Content of Milk from Jersey and Holstein Cows Consuming Pasture or a Total Mixed Ration

Holstein (n = 19) and Jersey (n = 18) cows were used to study effects of two feeding systems on fatty acid composition of milk. Confinement cows were fed a total mixed ration with corn silage and alfalfa silage and pastured cows grazed a crabgrass (90%) and clover (10%) pasture and were allowed 5.5kg of grain per head daily. Two milk samples were collected from each cow at morning and afternoon milkings 1 d each week for four consecutive weeks in June and July 1998. One set of milk samples was analyzed to determine fatty acid composition, and the second set was used for crude protein and total fat analyses. Data were analyzed by the general linear models procedure of SAS, using a split-plot model with breed, treatment, and breed × treatment as main effects and time of sampling and week as subplot effects along with appropriate interactions. Milk from pastured cows was higher than milk from confinement cows for the cis-9, trans-11 octadecadienoic acid isomer of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Also, milk from Holsteins was higher than milk from Jerseys for C16:1, C18:1, and CLA and lower than Jerseys for C6:0, C8:0, C10:0, C12:0, and C14:0. Several treatment × week interactions existed, but main effects were still important; for example, proportions of CLA in milk of grazed cows were relatively constant across weeks (0.66, 0.64, 0.64, and 0.69%±0.02%, respectively), but the CLA in milk of confinement cows increased in wk 4 (0.35, 0.31, 0.31, and 0.48%±0.02% for wk 1 to 4, respectively). There are potentially important differences in fatty acid composition of milk from cows consuming a warm season pasture species compared with milk from cows consuming a total mixed ration, as well as differences between Holstein and Jersey breeds.

Comparison of fatty acid content and DNA homology of the filamentous gliding bacteriaVitreoscilla, Flexibacter, Filibacter

DNA hybridization experiments showed that there was a high degree of homology amongVitreoscilla strains but not with DNA fromFilibacter limicola. Flexibacter spp were much more heterogeneous indicating a low genetic similarity. These results were also reflected in the membrane fatty acids of the bacteria. TheVitreoscilla strains were very similar with the 16:1ω7c fatty acid being dominant. The membrane fatty acids ofF. limicola were dominated by a15:0 and a17:0 components which provided additional support for its relatedness to the genusBacillus. There was much greater diversity in the fatty acid patterns of theFlexibacter spp.F. aurantiacus, F. ruber andF. elegans shared the common dominant fatty acids 16:1ω7c with theVitreoscilla strains, but this was replaced by the 16:1ω6c acid inF. flexilis. F. ruber was distinguished by the absence of branched odd-chain monounsaturated fatty acids andF. elegans by the dominance of the β-OH i15:0 acid. Precise determination of fatty acid double bond positions and geometry are essential for correct interpretation of increasingly complex ecological and taxonomic data sets.

Comparison of fatty acid content of imported peanuts

AbstractVariability in fatty acid compositions of peanuts imported from six different countries into the United States were studied to determine their effect on processing and storage conditions. The oil content ranged from 44.1 to 50.4%. Major fatty acids, palmitic acid (C16:0), oleic acid (C18:l), and linoleic acid (C18:2) ranged from 8.6 to 12.7, 35.9 to 61.1 and 21.7 to 44.2%, respectively. Oleic and lino‐leic acids together comprised ca. 78.0–83.0% of the total fatty acids. Highly significant differences (P&lt;.01) in fatty acid compositions were obtained between samples and between locations (countries of origin). Indicators of stability of the peanut samples as measured by the oleic/linoleic acid ratio (O/L) and iodine value (IV) of the extracted peanut oils showed variable but significant differences (P &lt;.05) between locations. Generally, higher O/L ratios corresponding to lower IV indicate better stability and longer shelf‐life of the samples.
