Spoilers on sedan cars, designed to counteract lift and enhance grip, also increase drag. Aerofoils play a vital role in reducing drag while increasing lift force. This study compares three different angles of attack to identify the one that generates the best performance, based on its aerodynamic coefficients. In a world focused on ecological preservation and fuel efficiency, these studies become essential.

La micro generación de energía eólica a través de turbinas eólicas de eje vertical para bajas velocidades de viento en el departamento de Santander, Colombia es viable debido a las características físicas de la región. Sin embargo, existen factores cruciales para el desarrollo de una turbina para la región como la tipología de la turbina, solidez, relaciones de aspecto, etc. Por tal motivo, es una buena práctica realizar simulaciones por medio de la dinámica de fluidos computacional (CFD) con el fin de predecir el desempeño que tendrá la turbina en operación. Es por esto, que se realizó un análisis de seis configuraciones de una turbina VAWT tipo Darrieus de álabes rectos utilizando el perfil asimétrico DU06W200 las cuales fueron obtenidas por un algoritmo que tiene en cuenta los factores mencionados con anterioridad. Las relaciones de altura-diámetro a analizar fueron 0.25 (con longitudes de cuerda de 0.117 y 0.173 m), 0.4 (con longitudes de cuerda de 0.0929 y 0.137 m) y 1 (con longitudes de cuerda de 0.0587 y 0.0864 m). Se puede concluir con la relación de 0.25 y una longitud de cuerda de 0.173 m es posible obtener un Coeficiente de Potencia promedio de 0.31 siendo este un valor sobresaliente debido a la baja velocidad de viento de la región de interés.

Comparative CFD Analysis of Forced Convection Cooling of a Gas Turbine Blade of Different Materials with Several Staggered holes

For gas turbines, the energy of the fluid can be expressed in terms of the enthalpy change, which is almost directly related to the turbine temperature. The performance of the gas turbine can be improved by continuously improving the temperature and compression ratio. In this article, for the cooling of blades, making several radial holes has been suggested to pass high cooling air at high velocity along the span of blade. CFD analysis has been used to analyse the effect of heat transfer of a gas turbine with six different models which has 6,7,8,9,10,11,12 inline one row of holes and are further compared with each other. Three different materials has been considered and heat transfer in each material has been examined and then compared. After evaluation it has been concluded that the blade with 12 staggered holes in Titanium had the minimum temperature rise. All other performances were also best in Titanium comparative to other two materials. Keywords: Gas turbine, staggered holes, CFD analysis.

Comparative CFD analysis of Kali-Gandaki “A” Francis runner with runner generated from Bovet method

Kali-Gandaki “A” is a medium head Francis turbine site located in Syangja District of Nepal. The dimensionless specific speed number for this site falls in the range suitable for generating meridional profile from Bovet Method. In this paper, the meridional profile of the actual runner currently deployed is extracted from CAD drawings and another meridional profile is generated using empirical relations of the Bovet Method. Meridional area of profile from Bovet Method is significantly larger in comparison to CAD-based profile. Both of these profiles are imported in commercial software ANSYS BLADEGEN, using linear blade angle distribution with no lean runner’s 3D model is generated for both cases. Both designs are meshed in Turbo-Grid and simulated in ANSYS CFX with k-epsilon turbulence model. Simulation reveals the CAD-based runner has 91.11% efficiency in comparison to Bovet based runner which has only 85.6% efficiency. Also, Simulation results reveal Bovet-based runner is more susceptible towards erosion and cavitation which suggests there is room for improvement and optimization of design obtained from Bovet Method.

Comparative design and CFD analysis of 3-D printed acrylonitrile butadiene styrene nozzle aerator for discharge reduction

The flow nozzle aerator, which is the part of the water tap made up of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, can be modified entirely with a new design. The curved and cone-shaped slopes are used to improve the smooth flow at uniform velocity. Simultaneously, discharge is optimum by modified interior design. The smooth laminar delivery of water with optimum pressure, the liquid element at the aerator end becomes smooth. The assembled nozzle aerator solid model has been generated before experimentation. This can promote through the prediction by the modern tool ANSIFLUENT and CFD for finding the flow behavior and its outlet characters. The solid model can be fabricated to prototype for accurate dimensions by using 3-D printing technology. Comparing fluid motion with the time consumption of filling water has been done over these different kinds of aerator and nozzle models, which are fabricated by 3-D printing.

Performance analysis of hybrid electric and distributed propulsion system applied on a light aircraft

Aircraft industry is still in the early stages of pure electric propulsion systems development, the main concern is the significant mass of batteries. As such, hybrid electric systems have gained much stakeholder attention in the recent years. At the same time, interest in distributed propulsion systems is also increasing, due to the improvement in aerodynamic efficiency compared to conventional configurations. This paper investigates these two fields, presenting the results of two correlated studies. The first study deals with:i. The relevance of the purely electric propulsion systems and their comparison to conventional ones andii. Hybrid propulsion systems and the suitable hybrid configuration for light aircraft using the normalized range factor and range analysis.The outcome of the first investigation has been used in the second study to build a distributed propulsion architecture and complete a comparative CFD analysis to demonstrate the advantages of the new concept compared to the baseline configuration.

And in the field of research and development there is use of miniature centrifugal pump for different applications. So, there is need to design the miniature pump impeller by standard design procedure. The model is developed with the help of CATIA v5 R21 software. Then an analysis is carried out in the ANSYS Fluent for different materials and various parameters like wall shear stress and static pressure are analyzed

Comparative CFD analysis of helical shaped earth air pipe heat exchanger using water tube as a thermal reservoir using different pipe materials

Common configuration of EAPHE system usually consider single or U shaped configuration, which requires large installation area and are not suitable for installation under small home or office setup. This major drawback can be overcome by using helical shaped air pipe, which reduces installation area up to 60%. Performance of EAPHE deteriorates after long run due to thermal saturation in the soil near to pipe surface. In this paper problem of thermal saturation of soil is attempted by proposing water pipe of three different pipe materials. Water pipe act as thermal reservoir to absorb heat from surrounded soil and maintains constant heat transfer after 24 hours of long run. Thermal performance of Earth Air Pipe Heat Exchanger (EAPHE) has been investigated under four different type of model developed using helical air pipe and comparison were made in terms of temperature drop, soil temperature at 0.05m and 0.25 m from pipe, change in water temperature, COP and effectiveness of the system for the continuous 72hours of run.

A comparative CFD analysis of NACA0012 and NACA4412 airfoils

Wind energy has been seen as one of the most suitable sources of renewable energy. Wind energy is low cost when compared the other sources. Therefore, wind energy can gain an edge over the fossil-fired power plants. Aerodynamic efficiency of the airfoil is very crucial for aerodynamic efficiency of the wind turbine. The primary purpose of our study was to analyze the NACA0012 and NACA4412 airfoil at various attack angles with constant Reynolds number and to examine the effects of the symmetrical and asymmetrical profiles of the airfoil. Analysis of aerodynamic performance of NACA0012 and NACA4412 airfoil were performed with using ANSYS Fluent program. Also, lift coefficients and drag coefficients were calculated at various attack angles. According to calculations, optimum attack angles were found for each profile. Finally, NACA0012 and NACA4412 airfoils were discussed and reported in terms of their airfoil performances.

Comparative CFD Analysis and Investigation of Automobile Radiator Using Nanofluids

Radiator is employed to transfer thermal energy from one supply system to different for the aim of continuous heating and cooling. It’s created to perform cooling process in automobile industy. It is always a source of heat to its environment, this could be either for the aim of heating this surrounding or for cooling the fluid agent equipped to cool the engine. Automobile radiator main perform is to cool the engine by passing the coolant through cylinder water jackets and fins. Modeling of Aluminium radiator is completed by exploitation solid works 2016 software and CFD analysis is performed on radiator by exploitation solid works flow simulation flow process. CFD analysis is performed on radiator by selecting different fluids i.e. one regular fluid water and three nanofluids like Titanium oxide (TiO2), Copper oxide (CuO) and Aluminum oxide (Al2O3). Boundary conditions is provided as 90°C for inlet temperature of fluid, which can cooled by radiator pipe and fins by mean of convection process on ambient temperature of 25°C. Due to convection temperature of fluid flow inside radiator will decrease, which varies in the temperature of fluid along with Pressure and Velocity. By seeing the results we can conclude that nanofluid provide higher convection i.e. better cooling to engine compared to that of water.

Advanced simulation of naval pressure relief valve

The designing operation of pressure relief valve (PRV) was performed using NX Siemens. The purposes of this article are to evaluate different stages of real function of PRV when the pressure at the upstream is increasing step by step and the setting pressure of valve and the disc will be lifted. We simulate four different stages of valve evolution after the moment when the force exerted by the fluid on the disc approaches the spring force. The comparative CFD and FSI analysis are presented and interpretation of flow results (velocity, pressure and shear resultants) reflects the fluid structure interactions.

CFD Analysis of a Non-newtonian Fluids Processing Pump

Pumps are among the most spread machines in industrial facilities. In this work a comparative CFD analysis using different software is presented. The three-dimensional flow in the semi-open impeller and volute of a centrifugal pump is numerically simulated. The main advantage of semi-open impeller centrifugal pump is its efficiency which can be considered constant thanks to the clearance adjustment. In addition this kind of impeller is less likely to clog with solid bodies (important in case of slurry-processing). The open impeller has all the parts visible, so it is easier to inspect for wear and damages. Eventually it is lighter than a shrouded impeller: it can spin faster. The stress due to centrifugal force is indeed a limit for the speed of this machines. On the other hand its main disadvantage if compared to a shrouded pump is its lower efficiency due to the heavier tip leakage. In addition it cannot be employed in case of explosive products: the risk of contact between impeller and volute causing sparks is not negligible.The simulations have been carried out using both open-source and proprietary software: OpenFOAM®, PumpLinx ® and ANSYS-CFX ®. The performance of the machine handling both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids are also investigated. The numerical models and the results of the different computational strategies were compared with the experimental data and the accuracy of different software is evaluated in the case of Newtonian model.It is well known that the performance of a centrifugal pump drops processing a viscous fluid. Even so the behavior during the pumping of non-Newtonian fluids has not been investigated so far. The non-Newtonian fluid processed is a shear-thinning fluid (the apparent viscosity decreases with an increase stress). The slurries which are usually processed in the food industries, chemical plants and oil&gas processes show a usual behavior which correspond to this kind of model.

Comparative CFD Analysis of Heterogeneous Gas–Solid Flow in a Countercurrent Downer Reactor

It has been widely recognized that input parameters affected the results of Eulerian simulation of gas–solid flow. In this study, a comparative study was performed to study the effect of input parameters on the hydrodynamics of gas–solid flow in a countercurrent downer reactor. It was concluded that the input parameters of the Eulerian model, including restitution coefficients, specularity coefficient, and drag correlation, have a major effect on the bed hydrodynamics, in accordance with previous studies on other types of gas-fluidized beds. More importantly, we show that it is possible to match the experimental data either by changing the wall boundary conditions or by correcting the interphase drag force. Therefore, there is no unique way to tune the input parameters to fit the experimental data. This study indicated that researchers have to pay great caution when selecting input parameters and highlighted the requirement of stringent experimental tests of the state-of-the-art Eulerian models.
