The peaked spectrum and compact steep spectrum sources: Issues and opportunities

AbstractThe peaked spectrum (PS) radio sources are sub‐kpc in size and have a peak in the radio spectrum. The compact steep specrum (CSS) sources range from about 1 kpc to an adopted upper limit on projected linear size of 20 kpc. Because of their galactic‐scale range of size, the PS and CSS radio sources interact strongly with the ISM of this host galaxy. This means that the PS and CSS sources can be a significant source of the AGN feedback. The PS and CSS sources are a key phase in radio source evolution. Yet, there is substantial uncertainty regarding the origin of these sources, their lifetimes, and their evolution. There are many interesting open questions regarding the PS and CSS radio sources. Here, in this short introduction to the topic, I focus on the origin stories for these sources and how progress might be made.

1321+045: A compact steep‐spectrum radio source in a cool‐core galaxy cluster

AbstractCluster‐central gigahertz peak and compact steep‐spectrum (CSS) sources offer an opportunity to study the earliest phases of active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback, but few have yet been examined in detail. We present results from radio and X‐ray observations of 1321+045, a CSS source in a 4.4 keV cluster at . The cluster has a strongly cooling core, and disturbances from a minor cluster merger may have triggered a period of jet activity which formed the 16 kpc radio lobes ago. However, new very long baseline array (VLBA) imaging shows a ∼20 pc jet on a different projected axis, which is probably only a few hundred years old. We consider possible histories for the system, with either one or two periods of jet activity. While this single system is informative, a broader study of the youngest cluster‐central radio sources is desirable.

Hunting for the nature of the enigmatic narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy PKS 2004-447

Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are a class of active galactic nuclei (AGN) that, in some cases, can harbor powerful relativistic jets. One of them, PKS 2004-447, showsγ-ray emission, and underwent its first recorded multifrequency flare in 2019. However, past studies revealed that in radio this source can be classified as a compact steep-spectrum source (CSS), suggesting that, unlike otherγ-ray sources, the relativistic jets of PKS 2004-447 have a large inclination with respect to the line of sight. We present here a set of spectroscopic observations of this object, aimed at carefully measuring its black hole mass and Eddington ratio, determining the properties of its emission lines, and characterizing its long term variability. We find that the black hole mass is (1.5 ± 0.2)×107 M⊙, and the Eddington ratio is 0.08. Both values are within the typical range of NLS1s. The spectra also suggest that the 2019 flare was caused mainly by the relativistic jet, while the accretion disk played a minor role during the event. In conclusion, we confirm that PKS 2004-447 is one of the rare examples ofγ-ray emitting CSS/NLS1s hybrid, and that these two classes of objects are likely connected in the framework of AGN evolution.

Catalog of Long-term Transient Sources in the First 10 yr of Fermi-LAT Data

Abstract We present the first Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) catalog of long-term γ-ray transient sources (1FLT). This comprises sources that were detected on monthly time intervals during the first decade of Fermi-LAT operations. The monthly timescale allows us to identify transient and variable sources that were not yet reported in other Fermi-LAT catalogs. The monthly data sets were analyzed using a wavelet-based source detection algorithm that provided the candidate new transient sources. The search was limited to the extragalactic regions of the sky to avoid the dominance of the Galactic diffuse emission at low Galactic latitudes. The transient candidates were then analyzed using the standard Fermi-LAT maximum likelihood analysis method. All sources detected with a statistical significance above 4σ in at least one monthly bin were listed in the final catalog. The 1FLT catalog contains 142 transient γ-ray sources that are not included in the 4FGL-DR2 catalog. Many of these sources (102) have been confidently associated with active galactic nuclei (AGNs): 24 are associated with flat-spectrum radio quasars, 1 with a BL Lac object, 70 with blazars of uncertain type, 3 with radio galaxies, 1 with a compact steep-spectrum radio source, 1 with a steep-spectrum radio quasar, and 2 with AGNs of other types. The remaining 40 sources have no candidate counterparts at other wavelengths. The median γ-ray spectral index of the 1FLT-AGN sources is softer than that reported in the latest Fermi-LAT AGN general catalog. This result is consistent with the hypothesis that detection of the softest γ-ray emitters is less efficient when the data are integrated over year-long intervals.

Radio continuum sources behind the Large Magellanic Cloud

ABSTRACT We present a comprehensive multifrequency catalogue of radio sources behind the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) between 0.2 and 20 GHz, gathered from a combination of new and legacy radio continuum surveys. This catalogue covers an area of ∼144 deg2 at angular resolutions from 45 arcsec to ∼3 arcmin. We find 6434 discrete radio sources in total, of which 3789 are detected at two or more radio frequencies. We estimate the median spectral index (α; where Sv ∼ να) of α = −0.89 and mean of −0.88 ± 0.48 for 3636 sources detected exclusively at two frequencies (0.843 and 1.384 GHz) with similar resolution [full width at half-maximum (FWHM) ∼40–45 arcsec]. The large frequency range of the surveys makes it an effective tool to investigate Gigahertz Peak Spectrum (GPS), Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS), and Infrared Faint Radio Source (IFRS) populations within our sample. We find 10 GPS candidates with peak frequencies near 5 GHz, from which we estimate their linear size. 1866 sources from our catalogue are CSS candidates with α < −0.8. We found six candidates for High Frequency Peaker (HFP) sources, whose radio fluxes peak above 5 GHz and no sources with unconstrained peaks and α > 0.5. We found optical counterparts for 343 of the radio continuum sources, of which 128 have a redshift measurement. Finally, we investigate the population of 123 IFRSs found in this study.

The Cluster-central Compact Steep-spectrum Radio Galaxy 1321+045

Abstract The radio galaxy 1321+045 is a rare example of a young, compact steep-spectrum source located in the center of a z = 0.263 galaxy cluster. Using a combination of Chandra, VLBA, VLA, MERLIN, and IRAM 30 m observations, we investigate the conditions that have triggered this outburst. We find that the previously identified 5 kpc scale radio lobes are probably no longer powered by the active galactic nucleus, which seems to have launched a new ∼20 pc jet on a different axis, likely within the last few hundred years. We estimate the enthalpy of the lobes to be , only sufficient to balance cooling in the surrounding 16 kpc for ∼9 Myr. The properties of the cluster’s intracluster medium (ICM) are similar to those of rapidly cooling nearby clusters, with a low central entropy (8.6 keV cm2 within 8 kpc), short central cooling time (390 Myr), and t cool/t ff and t cool/t eddy ratios indicative of thermal instability out to ∼45 kpc. Despite previous detection of Hα emission from the brightest cluster galaxy, our IRAM 30 m observations do not detect CO emission in either the (1–0) or (3–2) transitions. We place 3σ limits on the molecular gas mass of M mol ≤ 7.7 × 109 M ⊙ and ≤5.6 × 109 M ⊙ from the two lines respectively. We find indications of a recent minor cluster merger that has left a ∼200 kpc tail of stripped gas in the ICM, and probably induced sloshing motions.

Extragalactic Radio Sources: Jet/Lobe Internal Pressure and Consequences

In this work, we use analytical methods to describe expansion of Extragalactic Radio Sources (EGRS). Result shows that source size expansion depends on the following parameters: age of the source, lobe internal pressure, ambient medium density, and angle of observation.
 Moreover, from the analyses, we have shown that the obtained results, and , suggestively implies that and . This shows that since , jet internal pressure exceeds the lobe’s internal pressure. Therefore, for a typical EGRS, this simply indicates that ambient medium density is higher in the jet region than in the region of the lobe. This is expected since the ambient density thins out from the central core to the region where lobe is located. It is in consonance with the notion that for large extended EGRS, lobes are located outside the host galaxies rather than within the host galaxies. Moreover, we can conclude from these results that compact steep spectrum sources have denser ambient medium than their more extended counterparts.

VLBI images at 327 MHz of compact steep spectrum and GHz-peaked spectrum sources from the 3C and PW samples

ABSTRACT We present results on global very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations at 327 MHz of 18 compact steep-spectrum (CSS) and GHz-peaked spectrum (GPS) radio sources from the 3C and the Peacock & Wall catalogues. About 80 per cent of the sources have a ‘double/triple’ structure. The radio emission at 327 MHz is dominated by steep-spectrum extended structures, while compact regions become predominant at higher frequencies. As a consequence, we could unambiguously detect the core region only in three sources, likely due to self-absorption affecting its emission at this low frequency. Despite their low surface brightness, lobes store the majority of the source energy budget, whose correct estimate is a key ingredient in tackling the radio source evolution. Low-frequency VLBI observations able to disentangle the lobe emission from that of other regions are therefore the best way to infer the energetics of these objects. Dynamical ages estimated from energy budget arguments provide values between 2 × 103 and 5 × 104 yr, in agreement with the radiative ages estimated from the fit of the integrated synchrotron spectrum, further supporting the youth of these objects. A discrepancy between radiative and dynamical ages is observed in a few sources where the integrated spectrum is dominated by hotspots. In this case the radiative age likely represents the time spent by the particles in these regions, rather than the source age.

Compact steep-spectrum and peaked-spectrum radio sources

Compact steep-spectrum (CSS) and peaked spectrum (PS) radio sources are compact, powerful radio sources. The multi-frequency observational properties and current theories are reviewed with emphasis on developments since the earlier review of O'Dea (1998). There are three main hypotheses for the nature of PS and CSS sources. (1) The PS sources might be very young radio galaxies which will evolve into CSS sources on their way to becoming large radio galaxies. (2) The PS and CSS sources might be compact because they are confined (and enhanced in radio power) by interaction with dense gas in their environments. (3) Alternately, the PS sources might be transient or intermittent sources. Each of these hypotheses may apply to individual objects. The relative number in each population will have significant implications for the radio galaxy paradigm. Proper motion studies over long time baselines have helped determine hotspot speeds for over three dozen sources and establish that these are young objects. Multifrequency polarization observations have demonstrated that many CSS/PS sources are embedded in a dense interstellar medium and vigorously interacting with it. The detection of emission line gas aligned with the radio source, and blue-shifted HI absorption and [OIII] emission lines indicates that AGN feedback is present in these objects -- possibly driven by the radio source. CSS/PS sources with evidence of episodic AGN over a large range of time-scales have been discussed. The review closes with a discussion of open questions and prospects for the future.

Parsec-scale Properties of Steep- and Flat-spectrum Extragalactic Radio Sources from a VLBA Survey of a Complete North Polar Cap Sample

Abstract We observed with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 2.3 and 8.6 GHz a complete flux-density-limited sample of 482 radio sources with decl. > +75° brighter than 200 mJy at 1.4 GHz drawn from the NVSS catalog. A total of 34% of the sources show parsec-scale emission above the flux density detection limit of 30 mJy; their accurate positions and parsec-scale structure parameters are determined. Among all the sources detected at least at the shortest VLBA baselines, the majority, or 72%, have a steep single-dish spectrum. The fraction of the sources with a detectable parsec-scale structure is above 95% among the flat-spectrum objects and close to 25% among the steep-spectrum objects. We identified 82 compact steep-spectrum source candidates, which make up 17% of the sample; most of them are reported for the first time. The compactness and the brightness temperature of the sources in our sample show a positive correlation with single-dish and VLBA spectral indices. All the sources with a significant 8 GHz variability were detected by the VLBA snapshot observations, which independently confirmed their compactness. We demonstrated that 54% of the sources detected by the VLBA at 2.3 GHz in our sample have a steep VLBA spectrum. The compact radio emission of these sources is likely dominated by optically thin jets or mini-lobes, not by an opaque jet core. These results show that future VLBI surveys aimed at searching for new sources with parsec-scale structure should include not only flat-spectrum sources but also steep-spectrum ones in order to reach an acceptable level of completeness.

On Cosmic Epochand Linear Size/Luminosity Evolution of Compact Steep Spectrum Sources

We have used analytical methods in this paper to obtain a mathematical relation that describes relationship between the linear size of compact steep spectrum (CSS) sources and their redshift. Result shows that the source linear size has an inverse power-law dependence on the redshift. Moreover, for the purpose of obtaining an empirical relation that shows relationship between the liner size and the redshift, we carry out simple linear regression analyses on the observed linear sizes of the CSS sources in our sample against their respective observed redshifts. Results of the analyses indicate that the linear sizes of the quasars have direct power law relationship with their respective redshifts; while the converse is the case for their galaxy counterparts. Their correlation coefficients are marginal. In comparison with the obtained theoretical relation, we notice that for the CSS quasars, the linear size–redshift data show an inverse correlation. This is comparable with the theoretical relation. So, it suggests that the dynamical evolution of the source linear sizes may have some cosmological effects on it. However, the converse is the case for the CSS galaxies – the correlation is direct. The possible explanation for this difference is that quasars are observed at higher redshifts than their galaxy counterparts. Hence, the cosmological effects are expected to be more pronounced on the quasars. Furthermore, we use analytical methods again to obtain a theoretical relation that shows relationship between luminosity and redshift. The relation indicates that luminosity of a radio source has an inverse power-law relationship with redshift. This suggestively implies that the intrinsic luminosity of a radio source may be modified by cosmological evolution. Moreover, for the purpose of obtaining an empirical relation for comparison with the theory, we carry out linear regression analysis of observed luminosities against observed redshifts of the CSS quasars and galaxies in our sample. Results show that luminosities have excellent direct power-law relationship with redshifts. However, this is in contradiction to the obtained theory which shows inverse relationship between the two parameters. This excellent direct correlation has been attributable by some authors to strong luminosity selection effects in which samples with high luminosities are found at high redshifts. Therefore, if the selection effects are taken care of, we may be able to see the comparability of the theory with the empirical relation. Hence, we conclude that source radiated power may have some cosmological implications just like we saw in the size/redshift relation.

Intergalactic Media Densities of Extragalactic Radio Sources and Source Ages

In this paper, we use analytical methods with some plausible assumptions to develop a mathematical model which may be used to obtain estimate of density of the intergalactic medium (IGM). This relation suggests that the plot of the linear sizes against the bolometric luminosities of the extragalactic radio sources in our sample should be able to furnish us with an estimate of the density of IGM in which the radio sources are domiciled. Moreover, for the purpose of obtaining an empirical relation similar to the theoretical model, we carry out linear regression analysis of linear sizes and luminosities of the 31 radio galaxies in our sample. The regression result shows an empirical relationship between observed source linear sizes and observed bolometric luminosities with slight correlation whose coefficient is 4. Moreover, we compared the theoretical relation and the empirical relation to obtain an estimate of the particle number density of the IGM in which the radio sources are located. The estimate indicates a very low density when compared with the values obtained by authors for the compact steep spectrum (CSS) sources. However, while the linear sizes of the CSS sources are of sub-galactic dimensions – they are located within the interstellar media (ISM) – those of the large extended extragalactic radio sources extend into the intergalactic media. The staggering difference in these obtained densities of IGM and ISM simply supports the general notion that there is a sharp decrease in the density at the IGM–ISM interface. Moreover, using theoretical approach again, with some plausible assumptions, we find another relation which may be used to estimate the ages of extragalactic radio sources. This relation possibly indicates that the plot of the linear sizes against velocities of the radio jets of the radio sources in our sample should be able to supply us with an estimate of the sources’ ages. We find from the simple linear regression analysis of linear sizes and jet velocities of the radio galaxies in our sample, a relation with correlation coefficient given as 4, which is also marginal. Comparison of the two relations – theoretical and the empirical relations – gives an estimate of age of the radio sources. The value shows that these large extended extragalactic radio sources are old sources.

Spectroscopic classification, variability, and SED of the Fermi-detected CSS 3C 286: the radio-loudest NLS1 galaxy?

ABSTRACT 3C 286 is a well-known calibrator source in radio astronomy. It is also one of very few compact steep-spectrum (CSS) sources detected in γ-rays. Here, we perform a detailed spectroscopic and variability analysis and present the first quasi-simultaneous optical to X-ray spectral energy distribution (SED) in order to reveal physical mechanisms that dominate its emission at different wavelengths, and arrive at a reliable optical source classification. The first main result of our study reveals several pitfalls when applying simple broad- or narrow-line Seyfert 1 (BLS1 or NLS1) classification criteria that only look at the [O iii]–Hβ complex. [O iii] and Hβ can be dominated by the same outflow components, in which case full width at half-maximum (Hβ) is no reliable classification criterion, and extinction by intrinsic or intervening material can make the highest velocity Hβ component undetectable. After careful combination of all information from ultraviolet (UV)–optical spectra along with multiwavelength data, we confirm that 3C 286 can be classified as NLS1 galaxy, with line properties and supermassive black hole mass (of order 108 M⊙ and accreting near the Eddington limit) close to the BLS1 regime, making it an important borderline object. The quasi-simultaneous SED taken with Swift shows a sharp rise in the optical–UV, implying the presence of a strong accretion-disc component with extreme UV excess, consistent with emission-line diagnostics. Finally, we report the discovery of X-ray variability of 3C 286, plausibly dominated by jet emission, and variable by at least a factor of ∼4. This result suggests to exercise caution when using 3C 286 as radio calibrator in high-resolution radio very long baseline interferometry observations.

Jetted Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies & Co.: Where Do We Stand?

The discovery in 2008 of high-energy gamma-rays from Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies (NLS1s) made it clear that there were active galactic nuclei (AGN) other than blazars and radio galaxies that can eject powerful relativistic jets. In addition to NLS1s, the great performance of the Fermi Large Area Telescope made it possible to discover MeV-GeV photons emitted from more classes of AGN, like Seyferts, Compact Steep Spectrum Gigahertz Peaked Sources (CSS/GPS), and disk-hosted radio galaxies. Although observations indicate a variety of objects, their physical characteristics point to a central engine powered by a relatively small-mass black hole (but, obviously, there are interpretations against this view). This essay critically reviews the literature published on these topics during the last eight years and analyzes the perspectives for the forthcoming years.

Completing the 3CR Chandra Snapshot Survey: Extragalactic Radio Sources at High Redshift

Abstract We present the analysis of nine radio sources belonging to the Third Cambridge Revised catalog (3CR) observed with Chandra during Cycle 20 in the redshift range between 1.5 and 2.5. This study completes the 3CR Chandra Snapshot Survey thus guaranteeing the X-ray coverage of all 3CR sources identified to date. This sample lists two compact steep spectrum sources, four radio galaxies, and three quasars. We detected X-ray emission from all nuclei, with the only exception of 3C 326.1 and 3C 454.1 and from radio lobes in six out of nine sources at a level of confidence larger than ∼5σ. We measured X-ray fluxes and luminosities for all nuclei and lobes in the soft (0.5–1 keV), medium (1–2 keV), and hard (2–7 keV) X-ray bands. Since the discovered X-ray extended emission is spatially coincident with the radio structure in all cases, its origin could be due to inverse Compton (IC) scattering of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) occurring in radio lobes.

Jet Properties of Compact Steep-spectrum Sources and an Eddington-ratio-driven Unification Scheme of Jet Radiation in Active Galactic Nuclei

Abstract Compact steep-spectrum sources (CSSs) likely represent a population of young radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and have been identified as γ-ray-emitting sources. We present a comprehensive analysis of their γ-ray emission observed with Fermi/LAT and establish their broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs). We derive their jet properties using SED fits with a two-zone leptonic model for radiation from the compact core and the large-scale extended region, and explore the possible signature of a unification picture of jet radiation among subclasses of AGNs. We show that the observed γ-rays of CSSs with significant variability are contributed by the radiation of their compact cores via the inverse-Compton process of the torus photons. The derived power-law distribution index of the radiating electrons is p 1 ∼ 1.5–1.8, magnetic field strength is B ∼ 0.15–0.6 G, and Doppler-boosting factor is δ ∼ 2.8–8.9. Assuming that the jet is composed of e ± pairs, the compact cores of CSSs are magnetized and have a high radiation efficiency, similar to that of flat-spectrum radio quasars. The γ-ray-emitting CSSs on average have higher Eddington ratio and black hole mass than those non-GeV-detected CSSs, and they follow the correlation between the jet power in units of Eddington luminosity ( ) and Eddington ratio (R Edd) with other subclasses of AGNs, , indicating that R Edd would be a key physical driver for the unification scheme of AGN jet radiation.

WISE mid-infrared properties of compact active galactic nuclei selected from the high radio frequency AT20G survey

ABSTRACT Past studies of compact active galactic nuclei (AGNs), the dominant population at high radio frequencies, selected them using flat spectral index criteria. This biases the sample due to the steepening of AGN spectra at high radio frequencies. We improve upon this by selecting 3610 compact AGNs using their angular size information ($\lesssim$0.15 arcsec scale) from the Australia Telescope 20 GHz (AT20G) high-angular resolution catalogue. We cross-match these against the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer AllWISE catalogue and present a catalogue with 3300 (91 per cent) matches, 91 (3 per cent) rejects, and 219 (6 per cent) non-detections that are excellent high-redshift candidates. Of the matched compact AGNs, 92 per cent exhibit QSO mid-infrared colours (W1−W2 > 0.5). Therefore, our sample of high frequency compact sources has a very high rate of identification with mid-infrared QSOs. We find counterparts for 88 per cent of 387 compact steep-spectrum (CSS) sources in the AT20G survey, 82 ± 5 per cent of which exhibit QSO mid-infrared colours and have moderate redshifts (zmedian = 0.82), while those dominated by host galaxy colours in mid-infrared have lower redshifts (zmedian = 0.13). The latter classified into late- and early-type galaxies using their mid-infrared colours shows a majority (68 ± 4 per cent) have colours characteristic of late-type galaxies. Thus, we find that a larger fraction of these CSS sources are embedded in hosts with higher gas densities than average early-type galaxies. We compare mid-infrared colours of our AGNs against those reported for AGNs primarily selected using non-radio techniques. This shows that mid-infrared SED of high frequency selected compact radio AGN is comparatively less red, possibly due to contributions from their hosts.

Investigation on young radio AGNs based on SDSS spectroscopy

ABSTRACT The gigahertz peaked spectrum (GPS) sources, compact steep spectrum (CSS) radio sources, and high-frequency peaker (HFP) radio sources are thought to be young radio active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at the early stage of AGN evolution. We investigated the optical properties of the largest sample of 126 young radio AGNs based on the spectra in SDSS DR12. We find that the black hole masses MBH range from 107.32 to 109.84$\rm M_{\odot }$ and the Eddington ratios Redd vary from 10−4.93 to 100.37, suggesting that young radio AGNs have various accretion activities and not all are accreting at high accretion rate. Our young radio sources generally follow the evolutionary trend towards large-scale radio galaxies with increasing linear size and decreasing accretion rate in the radio power–linear size diagram. The radio properties of low-luminosity young radio AGNs with low Redd are discussed. The line width of [O iii] λ5007 core (σ[O iii]) is found to be a good surrogate of stellar velocity dispersion σ*. The radio luminosity $L_{\rm 5\, GHz}$ correlates strongly with [O iii] core luminosity L[O iii], suggesting that radio activity and accretion are closely related in young radio sources. We find one object that can be defined as a narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy, representing a population of young AGNs with both young jet and early accretion activity. The optical variabilities of 15 quasars with multi-epoch spectroscopy were investigated. Our results show that the optical variability in young AGN quasars presents low variations ($\leqslant \! 60{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$) similar to the normal radio-quiet quasars.

Searching for signs of jet-driven negative feedback in the nearby radio galaxy UGC 05771

ABSTRACT Hydrodynamical simulations predict that the jets of young radio sources can inhibit star formation in their host galaxies by injecting heat and turbulence into the interstellar medium (ISM). To investigate jet–ISM interactions in a galaxy with a young radio source, we have carried out a multiwavelength study of the z = 0.025 Compact Steep Spectrum radio source hosted by the early-type galaxy UGC 05771. Using Keck/OSIRIS observations, we detected H2 1–0 S(1) and [Fe ii] emission at radii of 100s of parsecs, which traces shocked molecular and ionized gas being accelerated outwards by the jets to low velocities, creating a ‘stalling wind’. At kpc radii, we detected shocked ionized gas using observations from the CALIFA survey, covering an area much larger than the pc-scale radio source. We found that existing interferometric radio observations fail to recover a large fraction of the source’s total flux, indicating the likely existence of jet plasma on kpc scales, which is consistent with the extent of shocked gas in the host galaxy. To investigate the star formation efficiency in UGC 05771, we obtained IRAM CO observations to analyse the molecular gas properties. We found that UGC 05771 sits below the Kennicutt–Schmidt relation, although we were unable to definitively conclude if direct interactions from the jets are inhibiting star formation. This result shows that jets may be important in regulating star formation in the host galaxies of compact radio sources.

Jets blowing bubbles in the young radio galaxy 4C 31.04

We report the discovery of shocked molecular and ionized gas resulting from jet-driven feedback in the compact radio galaxy 4C 31.04 using near-IR imaging spectroscopy. 4C 31.04 is a $\sim 100$ pc double-lobed Compact Steep Spectrum source believed to be a very young AGN. It is hosted by a giant elliptical with a $\sim 10^{9}~\rm M_\odot$ multi-phase gaseous circumnuclear disc. We used high spatial resolution, adaptive optics-assisted $H$- and $K$-band integral field Gemini/NIFS observations to probe (1) the warm ($\sim 10^3~\rm K$) molecular gas phase, traced by ro-vibrational transitions of $\rm H_2$, and (2), the warm ionized medium, traced by the [Fe II]$_{1.644~\rm \mu m}$ line. The [Fe II] emission traces shocked gas ejected from the disc plane by a jet-blown bubble $300-400~\rm pc$ in diameter, whilst the $\rm H_2$ emission traces shock-excited molecular gas in the interior $\sim 1~\rm kpc$ of the circumnuclear disc. Hydrodynamical modelling shows that the apparent discrepancy between the extent of the shocked gas and the radio emission can occur when the brightest regions of the synchrotron-emitting plasma are temporarily halted by dense clumps, whilst less bright plasma can percolate through the porous ISM and form an energy-driven bubble that expands freely out of the disc plane. This bubble is filled with low surface-brightness plasma not visible in existing VLBI observations of 4C 31.04 due to insufficient sensitivity. Additional radial flows of jet plasma may percolate to $\sim \rm kpc$ radii in the circumnuclear disc, driving shocks and accelerating clouds of gas, giving rise to the $\rm H_2$ emission.
