Macroinvertebrate community structure, pollution tolerance, diversity and feeding functional groups in polluted urban rivers under different black and odorous levels

Macroinvertebrate community structure parameters can reflect the water quality and water ecosystem health status of rivers. In this paper, using the results of macroinvertebrates in 16 urban rivers in Sichuan Province from November 2020 to March 2021, we independently evaluated the level of black odor in urban rivers based on the mathematical model. On this basis, we examined the community structure, fouling tolerance, diversity, and feeding functional groups of macrobenthos in rivers with different degrees of black odor. During the study, a total of 39 species of macroinvertebrates were collected and identified to 3 phyla, 7 classes, 16 orders, 26 families and 30 genera. Urban rivers changed from non-black and non-odorous to black and odorous: (1) the dominant species, Chironomus flaviplumus, Physa fontinalis and Barbronia weberi, changed to Chironomus flaviplumus, a fouling-tolerant species with wide adaptability; (2) According to the tolerance values (TVs), the pollution resistance categories gradually increased as the level of black odor increased, which indicated the level of black odor in water bodies; (3) The calculation of the Hilsenhoff biotic indices (HBI) indicated that 83.3% of the sampled sites were moderately to heavily polluted. In general, the severity of water quality pollution in the black and odorous type of river was significantly higher than that in the non-black and odorous type of river, and with the deepening of the degree of blackness and odor the quality of the water deteriorated; (4) The community structure had an unstable community structure and a low diversity index of macroinvertebrate species; (5) The taxa of feeding functional groups shifted from the presence of all five types of feeding functional groups to the dominance of fouling-resistant species represented by scrapers. The results summarize the characteristics and change patterns of various indicators under different black-odorous degrees, indicating that the HBI can be used as an alternative indicator for the evaluation of black odorous water, and the number of species of Chironomidae can indicate the degree of black odor in water bodies.

Spatio-temporal distribution of macrobenthos and benthic ecological health status in the Bohai Sea and the northern Yellow Sea, China

The Bohai Sea (BS) and the northern Yellow Sea (NYS) are threatened by anthropogenic activities and climate change. To accurately assess the benthic ecological quality status in this region, macrobenthos were selected as the research subject in this investigation. The results showed that the macrobenthos community structure had spatio-temporal differences in the BS and the NYS through principal coordinate analysis, especially in Laizhou Bay, and the Yellow River Delta was significantly different from that in the NYS. Specifically, in the BS, the abundance of macrobenthos in autumn was significantly higher than that in summer (p = 0.003). The dominant species composition also had seasonal differences. Overall, the macrobenthic community was slightly disturbed, but the benthic ecological health was “good”. The values of negative cohesion were higher than those of positive cohesion in the macrobenthos community, revealing that there was more competition, ensuring that the community was relatively stable.

Impact of sand bund removal on seagrass ecosystems: A study of macrobenthic community structure and correlation with macrophytes cover and sediments

This study investigated the impacts of the removal of sand bund on the macrobenthos community structure, seagrass cover, and sediment particle size in Merambong Shoal, Malaysia. The reclamation project deposited sand bund in the middle of Merambong seagrass shoal, resulting in its division into northern (NS) and southern (SS) halves. Ecosystem changes were monitored over a 31-month period using the transect lines method. Bi-monthly samples were collected for assessment. The results revealed a substantial decline in macrobenthos densities compared to previous studies. However, after the removal of the sand bund, there was a significant increase in macrobenthos density, specifically Polychaeta and Malacostraca, at NS. Seagrass cover at NS was initially lower than SS but showed an increase after the complete removal of the sand blockage. Sediment particle analysis reported a higher silt percentage at NS, indicating greater sedimentation at NS, which was partially sheltered from wave actions.

Community structure of abyssal macrobenthos of the South and equatorial Atlantic Ocean - Identifying patterns and environmental controls

The DIVA (Latitudinal Gradients of Deep-sea BiodDIVersity in the Atlantic) expeditions studied benthic biodiversity of the abyssal Equatorial and South Atlantic as part of the Census of the Diversity of Abyssal Marine Life (CeDAMar), the abyssal component of the ten-year programme Census of Marine Life (2000–2010). Three expeditions were carried out from RV Meteor between 2000 and 2009. Samples were taken along a latitudinal gradient spanning the Cape, Angola, and Guinea basins in the SE Atlantic and the Argentine and Brazilian basins in the SW Atlantic. The objectives of this study were to analyse patterns of epi- and suprabenthic macrofaunal density and composition at higher taxon level from epibenthic sledge (EBS) taken during the DIVA sampling campaigns and how they relate to differences in environmental conditions. In particular, the different oceanic basins are characterized by variation in surface primary productivity, sedimentary properties, and depth. We expected this difference to be reflected in the structure of the abyssal benthic communities. Consistent with this hypothesis, we found significant differences in macrofauna density between different deep-sea basins, mainly related to food availability. However, only subtle differences in community composition were observed. We found that stations in close proximity to one another showed great variability in both macrofaunal density and composition. We conclude that smaller spatial scale sampling should be paired with higher taxonomic resolution analyses of macrofaunal samples to better understand the factors contributing to variations of macrobenthic communities in the deep sea.

Experimental result of a shipwreck influence on the surrounding soft sediment communities in the vicinity of Bushehr port, Persian Gulf

Unplanned artificial reefs like old shipwrecks provide a hard substratum for the colonization of organisms, contributing to increasing local productivity and environmental carrying capacity especially when they are lies in soft sediment-dominated areas. Also, these structures can change the local current regime, sedimentation processes and composition of benthic species in the adjacent sediment. The present study aimed to evaluate the spatial effect of a shipwreck on its surroundings. Experimentally have been examined the relationship between sediment characteristics, abundance and macroinvertebrates richness in distance gradient (20, 50, 100 and 400 m) from a shipwreck that sank in 1983 on a soft bottom floor in the north of the Persian Gulf. Around the shipwreck, a total of 74 taxa were identified. The result indicated that macrobenthic density and richness varied significantly between distances with higher values at 20 and 50 m away from the wreck. Likewise, spatial variations in grain size were observed. A high concentration of gravel (63%) was recorded at about 20 m away from the wreck. Although, the amount of total organic carbon did not differ significantly among distances and does not explain the observed variations in density, richness and diversity of macrobenthos. In consequence, it is suggested that the proximity of the wreck modified the community structure of macrobenthos and sediment characteristics up to a distance of 50 m.

Assessment of macrobenthos community and ecological status of the Jiaozhou Bay, China

Jiaozhou Bay is one of the most economically and ecologically important semi-enclosed waters along the southern Yellow Sea coast of China. Anthropogenic activities like bivalve aquaculture, sewage discharge, and oil industry have severely impacted the bay environment in the past years. Macrobenthos plays an important role in monitoring marine ecosystem health. Species composition and community structure typically shift as a response to the effects of pollution and disturbance. In this study, macrobenthos community was characterized and assessed with the sediment samples collected from 15 stations in the Jiaozhou Bay in November 2018. Abundance, biomass, species composition, diversity and community structure along with environmental variables were determined to assess the benthic ecosystem health. The ecological status of the bay was also assessed by using abundance biomass comparison curve (ABC plot) and the widely used benthic indices AMBI and M-AMBI. The results showed that combination of five variables (water depth, Cha, Pha, sediment type, and biomass of different cultured bivalve species) were the main determinants for the macrobenthos community structure in the bay. Despite for most of the stations in the bay, relatively high species richness, evenness and diversity, and the undisturbed condition indicated by ABC plots and W statistics, the dominance of opportunistic polychaetes like Micronephthys oligobranchia could show that there is some degree of disturbance in the bay. ABC plot clearly indicated the disturbance of bivalve culture of Ruditapes philippinarum on the macrobenthos community at station J3. As a comparison, the highest abundance and species richness of macrobenthos at station J4 may indicate a positive role of oyster culture Magallana gigas on the improvement of ecological condition. The benthic indices AMBI and M-AMBI suggested that the benthic ecosystem of Jiaozhou Bay was slightly disturbed and the overall ecological status of the bay was in good condition.

Impacts of artificial reef on community structure and functional traits of macrobenthos near Furong Island, Shandong, China.

To evaluate the ecological restoration effect of artificial reefs and explore the impacts of artificial reefs age on the structure and functional traits of the macrobenthos community, two artificial reef areas with different reef ages in the coastal waters of Furong Island, Laizhou Bay were investigated in May, August, and October 2019. A total of 120 macrobenthos species were identified in the three seasons, including 72 species in the control area, 74 species in the artificial reef with short age (1 year), and 80 species in the artificial reef with greater age (4-5 years). Nihonotrypaea harmandi was the dominant species in all areas. The biomass, abundance, Shannon diversity index, Margalef species richness index of macrobenthos communities were all in order of reef area with greater age > reef area with lower age > control area, and the biomass and abundance in the reef area with greater age were significantly higher than those in the other two areas. The composition and relative abundance of functional traits of macrobenthos communities in the reef area and the control area were different. However, the dominant categories of traits in different areas were consistent, including deposit-feeder, burrower, medium body size, medium life span, high body flexibility and infauna. The composition and relative abundance of functional traits of macrobenthos communities in the reef area and the control area were different mainly in feeding mode, habitat, and body size. The relative abundance of smaller individuals (1-3 cm) and suspension feeders in the reef area was higher than those in the control area, while predator abundance was lower, and such effect became more pronounced with increasing reef age. The reef area was significantly higher than the control area in functional diversity, but without significant difference in functional redundancy. The results of abundance/biomass comparison curve and marine biotic index showed that the benthic ecological quality in the study area was good. The macrobenthos community was slightly disturbed after 1 year of reef construction, while the conservation effect of macrobenthic resources and the benthic ecological quality were significantly improved after 4-5 years of reef placement.

Species Diversity and Community Structure of Macrobenthos in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea, Republic of Korea

The Ulleung Basin of the East Sea is a biological hotspot, but studies on the macrobenthos therein are lacking. To evaluate the macrobenthos species diversity and community structure in the Ulleung Basin, we conducted a survey from 2017 to 2021. A total of 262 species of macrobenthos was detected by the survey, and the average habitat density was 243 individuals/m2. The average biomass of macrobenthos was 43.7 g/m2, and the average Shannon and Wiener’s diversity index was 2.3 (0.69–3.61). The dominant species were the polychaetes Terebellides horikoshii, Chaetozone setosa, Scalibregma inflatum, and Aglaophamus sp. and the bivalvia Axinopsida subquadrata. The community structure of macrobenthos differed according to water depth, and a correlation analysis using environmental variables showed that the community was affected by water temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen. The macrobenthic fauna in the Ulleung Basin was greatly influenced by water depth, the sedimentary environment was different, and the dominant species were also different. In addition, there was little seasonal change compared to the East Sea coast. Our findings will facilitate further investigation of benthic ecosystems throughout the East Sea.

Community structure and ecological quality assessment of macrobenthos in the coastal sea areas of Northern Yantai, China

Four cruises in the Bohai Sea and northern Yellow Sea off Yantai, China, in April and August of 2020, collected data on the species composition and community structure characteristics of macrobenthos in these sea areas. Temporal and spatial changes in the dominant macrobenthic species between April and August were also analyzed. The M-AMBI and environmental data were used to assess the benthic ecological quality of the coastal waters off Yantai. The results revealed differences in macrobenthic community structure and ecological quality status between the two sea areas. The main findings are as follows: A total of 7 phyla and 153 macrobenthic species were collected; 113 and 101 species were recorded in the Bohai Sea and northern Yellow Sea areas, respectively, and estimated abundance was 301 ind. m-2 and 598 ind. m-2 (p < 0.01), and biomass was 10.20 g m-2 and 14.65 g m-2, respectively. The dominant species comprised small-sized polychaetes and bivalves. The main dominant species were Glycinde bonhourei, Micronephthys oligobranchia, Sternaspis chinensis, and Moerella hilaris. The number of species differed significantly between seasons (p < 0.05). A comparison of the dominant species and community structure of the macrobenthos between seasons showed that more obvious replacement occurred in the Bohai Sea. There were major differences in community structure of the macrobenthos between the two areas. Macrobenthos abundance was positively correlated with depth, dissolved oxygen, and sand substrate, and negatively correlated with bottom-water temperature, pH, and fine silt or clay substrate. In April, sites with low ecological value were at the ports of Laizhou and Longkou and Yangma Island, with the water quality likely affected by intensive bivalve aquaculture, port activities, and river discharge; in August, low-ecological-value sites were the middle of Laizhou Bay, Longkou Port, west of Daheishan Island, and coastal water between the cities of Yantai and Weihai. Overall, the sea areas off Yantai were generally deemed to be in a “good” state of ecological quality.

Microhabitat thermal environment controls community structure of macrobenthos on coastal infrastructures

The proliferation of coastal infrastructure in the context of coastal development, urbanization, and global change is inevitably related to the transformation of coastal community structure. For restoration of biodiversity in these human-disturbed coastal ecosystems, it is vital to untangle the community structure and thermal environments, with the consideration of the microhabitat-scale thermal environment variations. In the present study, we measured the species richness, α-diversity (i.e. the species composition of each surface of breakwaters), and β-diversity (i.e. the dissimilarities among macrobenthic communities of different surfaces of breakwater) of macrobenthos on the breakwaters on a tropical shore for understanding the variation of the community structure of macrobenthos; we also monitored the operative temperatures in different surfaces of the breakwaters during the experimental period for investigating the roles of microhabitat thermal environment on the community structure of macrobenthos on the artificial infrastructure. Our results showed that there were higher species richness and abundance in the thermally benign microhabitats. The variations of β-diversity indicated that the community structure underwent dramatic changes in different microhabitats and seasons. The population dynamics of thermal-sensitive species (e.g. Patelloida pygmaea, Cellana toreuma, and Siphonaria japonica) largely contributed to the changes in community structure. Redundancy analysis (RDA) results showed that maximum temperature, temperature predictability (i.e. the degree to which a temperature data point in a time series is influenced by its historical values), and heating rate were important thermal characteristics driving community structure on the artificial infrastructure. These results indicate the heterogeneity of thermal environments among different microhabitats is crucial for maintaining the community structure of macrobenthos on the artificial infrastructure and suggest that structural complexity should be considered for biodiversity conservation in the design and construction of coastal infrastructure.

Initial ecological restoration assessment of an urban river in the subtropical region in China

Rivers in urbanised cities are often polluted, black, and odorous, with poor water quality and deteriorated ecology. Despite many river restoration studies, assessments of ecological responses to river restoration practices remain scant. Benthic animals are useful biological indicators showing the change and succession of river ecosystems; however, previous studies have mainly focussed on a few target species without considering overall ecosystem integrity. Here, we used a multi-index biological assessment method, benthic index of biological integrity (B-IBI) to assess ecological responses to river restoration of the Shahe River in subtropical region of China. Spatiotemporal changes in the macrobenthos community structure after restoration were monitored to explore species succession. We found that the number of macrobenthos species increased from 16 to 42, with the emergence of some pollution-sensitive species during the restoration period. Molluscs showed widespread recovery, and their relative proportions almost doubled from 12.5% to 24.4%. Oligochaetes and chironomids were the pioneer species in the recovering communities, while gastropod molluscs and pollution-sensitive aquatic insects were transitional species that first settled during the initial recovery period. Based on our survey data, 25 candidate metrics were selected, and five core metrics (total taxa, Simpson diversity index, percentage of crustaceans and molluscs, percentage of predators, and percentage of collector-gatherers) were identified after screening to establish the B-IBI. Our analysis revealed a distinct improvement in the overall health of the river, with the proportions of “excellent” and “good” sites increasing from zero to 28.6% and from 14.3% to 42.9%, respectively. A correlation analysis indicated that water flow, molluscs, and total phosphorus content were the three drivers of ecological recovery in the Shahe River. Overall, our study demonstrates the importance of governance and restoration of rivers in tropical and subtropical cities, and provides valuable evidence that can guide the design and evaluation of river restoration works.

Quantitative Analysis of the Correlation Between Macrobenthos Community and Water Environmental Factors and Aquatic Ecosystem Health Assessment in the North Canal River Basin of Beijing

Macrobenthos can reflect the cumulative effect of various ecological threats on the water environment and are closely related to the health of river ecosystems. In this study, taking the North Canal River basin, a typical basin in Beijing, as an example, ecological data from 34 stations were investigated in the summer of 2015. Characteristics of the macrobenthos communities were analyzed, and driving environmental factors were identified using typical correspondence analysis. Thresholds and response species of those driving environmental factors were conducted using the thresholds indicator taxa analysis (TITAN). In this study, the health status of the river ecosystem was evaluated by the multi-metrics method and benthic index of biotic integrity (B-IBI). The benthic community was dominated by pollution-tolerant aquatic insects and mollusks, with a low-level Shannon-wiener diversity index between 0-1.01; fluoride, biochemical oxygen demand, ammonia-nitrogen, and total phosphorus were driving environmental factors influencing the community structure of macrobenthos. Indicator species of ammonia-nitrogen were identified by the TITAN in the North Canal River basin with a threshold range of 1.09-6.94 mg·L-1; three indicator species of total phosphorus were identified with a threshold range of 0.48-1.27 mg·L-1, which were all positive response species. According to the health assessment, the river ecosystem in the North Canal River basin was generally unhealthy, and the upstream ecosystem was better than that downstream; the health conditions in the mountainous areas of Changping district were the best, whereas those in Chaoyang and central city districts were the worst. This study can provide a basis for ecological restoration and pollution control of rivers and also provide a reference for the water ecological civilization construction in other cities.

Taking the Qingyi River Basin as the research object, a survey of macrobenthos and physicochemical factors of the water body was carried out in September 2020. It analysed the structural characteristics of the macrobenthic community by means of the relative importance index, the biodiversity index and the Jaccard similarity coefficient. It investigated the extent of disturbance to the benthic community and the main environmental factors that affect it, by applying the comparative abundance/biomass curve method and redundancy analysis. Finally, the comprehensive index of water ecological environment quality was used to evaluate the river water quality. The results showed that (1) 61 species of macrobenthos were collected and identified in the Basin, which belonged to 3 phyla, 6 classes and 17 orders. The average density was 265.9 ind/m2 while the average biomass was 41.6 g/m2. The main dominant species which were shown in the index of relative importance in the community were Macrobrachium nipponensis, Cipangopaludina chinensis, Chironomus plumosus, and Ecdyrus. (2) The Jaccard similarity coefficient was low due to the analysis of community similarity, with a strong spatial heterogeneity between the investigation sites. (3) The main environmental factors-conductivity, ammonia nitrogen concentration and flow velocity-influenced the community structure of macrobenthos by the redundancy analysis. (4) The biological index analysis results indicated that the water quality in the basin was lightly or moderately polluted, which varied significantly from the assessment of the physical and chemical factors of water quality. The comprehensive water and ecological quality index model calculations, which integrated biotic and abiotic factors, suggested an overall water and environmental quality preference for the basin. But some sampling points have been disturbed or polluted, which was basically consistent with the abundance-biomass comparison curves analysis and the dominant species analysis, in which the result of evaluation was more scientific and reliable. 参考文献 相似文献 引证文献

The results showed that 9 phyla and 57 species of macrobenthos were identified in the intertidal zone of the Changjiang Estuary in 2019, and molluscs, crustacea and polychaeta were the main groups. The CM and NH were muddy intertidal zones, SS was rocky. The average density was 96.4 ind/m2, 160.4 ind/m2, and 488.9 ind/m2 in CM, NH and SS, the average biomass was 68.42 g/m2, 45.71 g/m2 and 763.72 g/m2 in the three areas. There were 3 sections in every area. The diversity, richness and evenness index were in 1.36-3.24, 0.75-2.88 and 0.48-0.77 with every section. The biodiversity of low tide zone was better than that of middle and high tide zone in muddy intertidal zone, but the middle tide zone was the best in rocky intertidal zone. All the macrobenthos were divided into two groups-muddy and rocky. Different species distributed in high, middle and low intertidal zones. Some species in high intertidal zone formed groups with very view in middle intertidal zone and some species in low intertidal zone formed groups with very view in middle intertidal zone. It showed that the sediment environment and tide were the most significant factors to affect community structure of intertidal macrobenthos. During the past 30 a, the species number of macrobenthos undulated in CM and NH, but decreased in SS; the average density and biomass were decreased in 3 areas, which should be related to wetland reclamation, species invasion, human over fishing and pollution. 参考文献 相似文献 引证文献

Structure and Distribution of Macrobenthos Community in Code River, Yogyakarta, Indonesia

This research aimed to explore the community structure of macrobenthos in Code River, Yogyakarta. This research was conducted during December 2019-January 2020 in Code River, Yogyakarta. Data was taken 4 times in 6 stations. Macrobenthos was taken using a Surber net with a size of 30 x 30 cm and sampling at 5 spots in each station. Data analysis consisted of density, diversity index, dominance index, and evenness index. Water quality data consisted of water temperature, flow velocity, water depth, water pH, dissolved oxygen, and organic matter. The results showed that the density of macrobenthos ranged from 54-172 ind/m2. Our results showed that Code River has moderate diversity based on the Shannon-Wiener diversity index. Sulcospira testudinaria is the most dominant species in Code River. The evenness index showed high except at station 2 which was categorized as moderate. Code River has pretty good water quality, but stations 3, 4, and 5 which are located in the city area, it has a high organic matter content.

SOME FEATURES OF THE SPECIES, SPATIAL AND TROPHIC STRUCTURE OF SUBLITTORAL AND LOWER LITTORAL MACROBENTHOS COMMUNITIES IN COASTAL LAGOON ECOSYSTEMS (KANDALAKSHA BAY, WHITE SEA)

The species composition, diversity, spatial and trophic structure of macrobenthic communities of the sublitoral and lower littoral zones were studied in several lagoon ecosystems (Kandalaksha Bay, White Sea). Surveys detected 52 species of benthic invertebrates and 6 species of seaweeds and algae in the investigated ecosystems. In the sublittoral zone, the greatest species diversity, total density and biomass of species populations were found in the lagoon least closed off from the sea, located at the exit from Kislaya Inlets’ head, where marine less euryhaline species were found more. The smallest species diversity was found in the most fenced and silted lagoons of the Nikolskaya Inlet and Zelyoniy Cape, where brackish water and marine euryhaline species prevailed. An intermediate position was occupied by the lagoon of Yermolinskaya Inlet and the lagoon near Lake Yershovskoe. In the littoral zone, as opposed to the sublittoral, common indicators of the macrobenthos community structure (total density, biomass, and less so the species diversity) increased from less regulated and open ecosystems to more enclosed ones. The exception was the lagoon of Nikolskaya Inlet, where significant overregulation and siltation led to a significant reduction in species diversity, total density and, especially, biomass of the macrobentos community. The trophic structure of macrobenthic communities of the studied lagoon ecosystems is characterized by a similar structure – the group of collector detritivores prevailed in the sublittoral zone, with an upward tendency from more open lagoons to lagoons sheltered off from the sea. In the lower littoral zone, which is more exposed to tidal impact, there was a greater amount of immobile sestonivores (Mytilus edulis), as well as scraper grazers (Littorina littorea) with the group of immobile sestonivores (M. edulis) tending to increase towards lagoons that are moderately sheltered off from the sea (the lagoon near Lake Yershovskoe lake and the lagoon of Yermolinskaya Inlet).

Temporal and spatial changes of macrobenthos communities in south east shores of the Caspian sea

In this research, Sampling of macrobenthos of Mazandaran beaches was performed in 7 stations at two depths of 5 and 10 meters during four seasons in 2020 using a grab with 8 replications in each station. In this study, a total of 10472 individuals were counted, which belonging to 22 species from 13 families. The highest frequency of macrobenthos (648 ± 170.79) was observed in spring and the highest amount of biomass (36.21 ±2.5 gr / m2) was observed in winter. Moreover, the highest prevalence of macrobenthos predominant groups during the sampling period was observed in Bivalves (40%), Crustaceans (36%), Annelids (22%) and Gastropoda (2%), respectively. The results of PERMANOVA analysis showed that the effect of two factors of season and depth impacted the biomass, abundance, species richness, species composition and community structure of macrobenthos significantly. Furthermore, the results showed that with increasing the depth from 5 to 10 meters, macrobenthos abundance increased by 4, 2, 1 and 9 times in spring, summer, autumn and winter, respectively. Moreover, increase in depth from 5 to 10m, the values of biomass and species richness have increased. In according to these results, it can be concluded that biomass and diversity index of macrobenthos communities change considerably in different seasons and depths. Therefore, natural changes of these variables should be considered when using these macrobenthos communities to assess the impact of environmental factors.

Community structure of macrobenthos in homestead ponds of Noakhali coast, Bangladesh

The integrity of the homestead pond supply depends on how various macrobenthic communities make their living more diversified and contribute to complex food webs. In addition, the macrobenthic community are significantly used as indicator organisms to detect the pollution impacts in aquatic ecosystems. In this study, we show the data about the diversity and community structure of macrobenthos and their relationship with environmental variables in homestead ponds of Noakhali coast from January 2019 to August 2019. The current study yielded 17 species belonging to seven taxonomic groups with a mean density of 3630 ind./m2. The Nematode community, comprising 48.86% of the total taxonomic groups with Prionchulus sp. as the dominant macrobenthic species represented more than 31% of the total macrobenthic taxa, and showed a significant negative correlation with the value of salinity, DO, pH. The environmental variables and diversity indices were detected significant variations (P < 0.05) among stations by the Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA, whereas Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index (H´) assessed moderate pollution, Evenness index (J) assessed uniform distributions of macrobenthic community, and environmental variables showed acceptable condition for the productivity of ponds. Cluster analysis (CA) and Non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) demonstrate demarcations in the community structure of macrobenthos between samples. Within macrobenthic communities, Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) provided insights and interpretations of the relationships between species and environmental gradients. Macrobenthic community reached the most abundance at a lower temperature, transparency and a higher DO, pH and salinity.

Community structure and diversity of macrobenthos in Jiaozhou Bay

To understand the current community structure and diversity of macrobenthos in Jiaozhou Bay, a survey was conducted at eight sampling stations in April, July, and October 2018, as well as January 2019. Eighty-two macrobenthos species were collected, including 30 of Annelida, 21 of Mollusca, 20 of Crustacea, 8 of Echinodermata, and 3 classified as “Others”. Ruditapes philippinarum was a common dominant species in summer, autumn, and winter. The annual average abundance and biomass were 280 ind./m2 and 446.45 g/m2, respectively. Shannon-Wiener diversity varied from 0.09 to 2.45 with an average value of 1.14. Margalef richness was 0.17–2.32 with an average value of 0.89. Pielou evenness was 0.14–1.00 with an average value of 0.71. The seasonal variation patterns of all tested indices were largely the same, with the highest in spring, next highest in winter, and lower in summer and autumn. The diversity at different survey stations varies greatly.
