Public health resilience and recovery in Ukraine: Academic partnerships to improve population health

Abstract Background Strengthening the public health workforce is among top priorities for the transformation of Ukraine’s public health system. As part of the USAID Public Health System Recovery and Resilience Activity, an Academic Partnership Collaborative brought together three Ukrainian universities (National University Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University, Sumy State University), two American universities (Temple University and Drexel University), and the All-Ukrainian Association of Public Health Specialists (UPHA) to enhance the competencies of public health graduates in Ukraine. Objectives The collaborative focuses on strengthening the Ukrainian universities’ public health curricula and the teaching and research competencies of the Ukrainian faculty, making the curricular changes in Ukraine better aligned with US and European academic standards. The university partners are collaborating with the newly established UPHA in building partnerships with peer organizations in the US (American Public Health Association) and Europe (EuPHA) and sharing advancements in public health education with the broader community of public health practitioners in Ukraine to enhance their competencies to improve population health and align with European systems of public health. Results We have established linkages among all partners via an initial meeting in Uzhhorod, Ukraine in April 2024. We anticipate results by November 2024 to include curriculum review recommendations, coaching on prioritized topics for the Ukrainian partners, faculty development plans, and the establishment of continuing professional development programs in collaboration with UPHA. Conclusions Through this partnership, selected Ukrainian universities will have an enhanced and sustainable capacity to train the public health workforce and will become leading examples for other public health programs to simulate and collaborate with beyond the project. Key messages • Ukraine’s resilience and recovery relies upon the strength of the current and future public health workforce; mechanisms for building public health training are essential to a healthy population. • A collaborative process of strategic activities among American and Ukrainian universities and professional associations can be effective in building a resilient public health system in Ukraine.

The INPHET- a global approach to Environmental Public Health Tracking

Abstract Environment and health monitoring and information systems are fundamental infrastructure for evidence provision for policy making. The International Network for Public Health and Environment Tracking (INPHET) was formed by a community of environmental public health practitioners to address common interests and activities that advance environmental public health surveillance (EPHS) and data systems, and their uses to inform public health actions. Its main goal is to address the vast inequalities across countries and communities in their ability to monitor, assess, inform and mitigate environmental and health issues. INPHET supports the relevant role of environmental epidemiology as the pillar science providing evidence for decision making and interventions aiming at reducing and preventing environmental related diseases and contributes to an overall vision for public health. As a “Community of Practice”, INPHET focuses on sharing experiences and expertise; addressing common challenges for implementing and enhancing the science of EPHS/tracking; improving understanding of the link between the environment and health; and providing the appropriate evidence that informs public policy. The network, initiated in conference meetings in 2012-13 and formally launched in Modena, Italy in 2014, has carried out several activities which aim at sharing expertise and learning from different models of environmental and health data integration and surveillance systems that directly inform policy. These include Twinning cooperation with Euro-Asian and Balkan countries and sharing of expertise with African Public Health Agencies. Some experiences are presented in this workshop and highlight the EPHS/EPHT model adopted by several national public health agencies. It promotes that such integration and uses of environmental and health data is key for EPHS, including their accessibility and usability for communities of public health researchers, practitioners and policy makers.

A geographic perspective of the association between physical activity and cardiovascular health: A need for community-level intervention

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a major cause of death globally, and minority communities are at higher risk of chronic health outcomes. A combination of lifestyle, including physical activity (PA), good nutrition, and reduced stress, can improve life expectancy. This study aimed to analyze the association between CVDs and PA among the adult population (N = 3,956) based on the World Health Organization (WHO) STEPwise Approach to Surveillance (STEPS) survey in Afghanistan. Descriptive statistics, logistic regression, and spatial analytical techniques were used to analyze the data. Based on the WHO STEPS data, the computed prevalence of CVDs, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol were 7.41%, 45.57%, 34.06%, 9.51%, and 12.16%, respectively. Multivariate logistic analysis indicated that moderate work-related PA was associated with higher odds of CVDs and high cholesterol while inversely associated with obesity. Moderate leisure-related PA was positively associated with obesity. Vigorous leisure-related PA was associated with lower risks of CVDs, obesity, and high cholesterol but had a positive association with hypertension. Spatial analysis revealed a CVD hotspot in the southern region and the risk factors clustered in the northern region. These findings offer valuable insights for community and public health practitioners to design targeted interventions for reducing the burden of CVDs and risk factors in communities in developing countries.

Language teacher expertise research: A theoretical case and research agenda

Abstract Expertise exists among all communities of educational practitioners at all levels and in all national contexts. By identifying expert practitioners, learning from them and valuing their professional competence, researchers can support, promote and build upon sustainable, embodied, holistic models of quality in ways that have direct relevance for the classroom, the curriculum and wider educational goals. Yet, despite its potential as a field of research, there have been relatively few studies involving expert language teachers to date. After a brief historical background, this article makes the case for language teacher expertise research, noting its high ecological validity, its great practical utility, its ability to bridge the research–practice divide and its potentially positive impact on teaching communities. Key methodological considerations are also discussed, including defining expertise, identifying expert teachers and looking beyond the limits of subject-specific pedagogy to understand the whole practitioner in their sociocultural context. The article then proposes a framework for future teacher expertise research that spans diverse methodologies. Six example research tasks from within this framework are proposed, each justified and exemplified, incorporating suggestions for research design that are intended to encourage both experienced and novice researchers to engage with teacher expertise as a promising domain for future investigation.

Navigating Unique Intersectional Experiences: LGBTQ+ Community Organisations Addressing Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities' Needs.

This exploratory study aimed to enhance the understanding of practitioners' experiences within LGBTQ+ community organisations when providing interventions for LGBTQ+ individuals with intellectual disabilities. Three specific objectives were outlined: to document the situations and challenges encountered by practitioners; to identify perceived needs among LGBTQ+ individuals with intellectual disabilities and to elicit their suggestions for recommendations to improve services. A qualitative approach, involving in-depth interviews with 12 Québec-based LGBTQ+ community practitioners, underwent content analysis. Findings were organised around three themes: perceived support needs of LGBTQ+ people with intellectual disabilities; challenges experienced in intervention and recommendations to improve services. Findings reveal that practitioners frequently face significant challenges when supporting LGBTQ+ individuals with intellectual disabilities, who often struggle with multiple daily challenges and insufficient support. The study highlights the need to empower LGBTQ+ organisations with essential skills and foster partnerships with public service staff to ensure a more inclusive, intersectional approach.

Measuring the community dream: A social capital lens of capacity building initiatives

ABSTRACT In 2010, San Antonio leaders sought to leverage networks and collective action to create a future in which each resident was responsible to the whole community in helping to reach a shared vision for 2020 to become a world-class city. In doing so, city administrators applied social capital theories to utilize the active networks in a social capital-rich community, which creates a wider capacity for dynamic actions and more opportunity for community practitioners to meet development goals. This case study compiles secondary sources from publicly distributed data sets, utilizing data mining techniques and social network analysis to describe community capacity building outcomes. This case study examines community development outcomes through a social-network analysis of organizational leadership, combined with an examination of diversity, civic engagement, and participation within the decade-long initiative, to provide insights for other leaders seeking to utilize a social capital theory approach to capacity building.

New Modes of Practice: A Framework Analysis of School Nurses' Accounts of Working With Children and Young People During COVID-19.

To identify new and accelerated modes of practice used by school nurses during the COVID pandemic. To create a quick reference infographic bringing together experiential evidence on the range and considerations regarding different modes of practice for use by the school nursing community of practice. A descriptive qualitative secondary data analysis of open-ended questions in a survey, and focus groups with school nurses. The pragmatic aim was to focus on changes in school nurse modes of practice to ensure continued engagement with children and young people, and school nurses' experience of the benefits and challenges of these modes of practice. Data were collected from 98 school nurse participants across a United Kingdom-wide survey (n78) in April to May 2022, and focus groups (n20) in June to July 2022, within the School Nursing in the Time of COVID project. Data from the seven open-ended questions in the survey and four questions from the focus group were analysed using the framework approach. Modes of practice fell into two categories: individual assessment and support (video-calling platforms, telephone contact, virtual messaging, walk-and-talks and home visits) and group support (wellbeing approaches, social media). Considerations for these modes rooted in school nurses' experience are described. Interpretations were used to create the summarising evidence-based infographic as a quick reference resource for school nurses. There was no 'one size fits all' approach. The modes used by school nurses were adopted or developed out of necessity or resource availability and in response to the specific needs of individuals or groups. The developed infographic provides a quick reference guide to deliver the expressed need for knowledge exchange within the school nursing community by participants in the original studies and can be used to inform current school nurse practice. The developed evidence-based infographic has stand-alone value. It has the potential to raise awareness of the range of different strategies that can be used to facilitate and/or enhance engagement with children and young people, equip school nurses with knowledge to foster innovative and responsive practice and aid critical reflection in a complex post-pandemic landscape. The infographic is a unique resource and is a first step in knowledge exchange based on experiential learning. The resource will be used as the foundation for future work to develop a co-created training resource for school nurse students (undertaking the Specialist Community Public Health Nurses course) and/or continuing professional development resource for established school nurses. This study has been conducted and reported in accordance with COREQ guidelines for qualitative research. A consultation group was closely involved with the planning, conduct and analysis of the original studies. This group consisted of representatives from professional organisations SAPHNA (School and Public Health Nurses Association) and the CPHVA (Community Practitioners' and Health Visitors' Association), a school nurse and a member of the public. SAPHNA have continued in their consultative role for this study and has provided content and usability feedback regarding the infographic. Early findings have been presented to the SN community of practice, and feedback invited, through presentation separately at the CPHVA and SAPHNA annual conference.

How to Create a Practitioner-Focused Academic Research Synthesis

ABSTRACT Practitioner-focused research syntheses are widely used in many disciplines as an effective, routine means to transfer knowledge from research to practice. We suggest that accounting academics develop research skills to enable them to create a practitioner-responsive research synthesis. We provide a step-by-step primer for conducting and reporting results on a focal research question in a research synthesis. We draw from our experience in creating a practitioner-validated research synthesis on issues related to group audits to illustrate the process concretely. This paper addresses the mindset necessary to assemble and convey research findings relevant to practitioners. Our goal is to equip accounting researchers with tools to develop high-quality research syntheses comparable to those that other disciplines use in communicating with their practitioner communities.

Emerging Topics, Challenges, and Strategies for Information Science Research

ABSTRACTThis panel will discuss emerging topics, challenges, and strategies for information scholars and information organizations to advance information science (IS) research in current complex information environments. Five panelists will provide their observations and thoughts based on their extensive research and/or professional practice experience, followed by active interaction with the audience. The panel discussion will be centered around 4 questions: 1. What emerging information topics or areas will have great significance to science and/or society? 2. What are the top challenges for IS researchers to perform cutting edge research? 3. How can information science researchers work together to address our research challenges? And 4. What are the implications of emerging topics, challenges, and strategies for information schools and information organizations? The engagement of the panelists and the audience will help information science research and practitioner communities gain insights into the directions of information science research.

How Mobile ECCE Practitioners Leverage a Variety of Learning Materials in Resource-Scarce Communities

This study explored how curriculum policies support that Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) practitioners need to leverage a variety of learning materials in resource-scarce communities to enhance children’s holistic development. Mobile ECCE practitioners face a challenge of limited resources especially in rural areas. Yet there is lack of professional training on the use of variety of learning materials in a resource-scarce communities. The study was underpinned by Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory to understand the significance of how mobile ECCE practitioners scaffold children's learning experiences by using various materials and tools, considering the underprivileged sociocultural context. A qualitative phenomenological design was adopted to examine mobile ECCE practitioners leveraging of a variety of learning materials in resource-scarce communities. Semi-structured interviews were used to gather data from twenty mobile ECCE practitioners in the rural communities from two mobile ECCE units of the Free State Province, South Africa. Prolonged engagement was used to validate the results. Interpretative phenomenological strategy was used to analyse data with the help of Atlas.ti. This study found that mobile ECCE practitioners employed innovative methods to adapt and improvise the use of existing materials to improve children’ holistic development. In light of this, it is recommended that practitioners need to integrate sociocultural context into their innovative methods improve the quality of ECCE in the face of resource constraints. Thus, novelty of this paper contributes to the curriculum and professional development in resource-scarce communities in rural areas.

Navigating and Resisting Educational Systems: The Experiences of Latinx Families in Rural Oregon.

This study explores the experiences of Latinx parents in rural Oregon from the perspectives of Latinx parents, Latinx students, and community practitioners to understand the barriers Latinx families encounter and how they leverage their community cultural wealth to address these barriers within the context of initiatives implemented by the district. This qualitative study is guided by the following questions: What barriers do Latinx families encounter in rural schools, and how do parents leverage their community cultural wealth to address these barriers? Findings indicate that even when families were engaged in initiatives (e.g., dual language immersion programs) implemented by the district to create a welcoming environment, Latinx parents continued to encounter multiple systemic barriers (e.g., immigration laws) and leveraged multiple forms of community cultural wealth (e.g., linguistic capital) to navigate these barriers. Our findings reveal the complex dynamics at play in rural school communities serving Latinx families.

Collective leadership development in the civic arena

PurposeAs a collective paradigm of leadership emerges in the literature, many community leadership programs still align with leader-centric perspectives. The Kansas Leadership Center’s Leadership Transformation Grant is an exemplar of developing collective leadership in the civic arena. The purpose of this article is twofold: (1) to present the findings of a community-engaged, qualitative research study on the impact of collective leadership development on the practice of civic leadership and (2) to discuss relevant implications learned from reflections on the methodology for the practice of community-engaged research.Design/methodology/approachThis study is a form of engaged research (Van de Ven, 2007) and is consistent with the principles of community-based research (Strand, Marullo, Cutforth, Stoecker, & Donohue, 2003). I took an exploratory approach to this study because the knowledge intersection of collective leadership, civic leadership and leadership development is still emerging and understudied. I explored the individual, group and systems levels as three components of a complex adaptive system (Uhl-Bien, Marion, & McKelvey, 2007). To better understand the dynamic relationship between individual, group and system in this grant team, I employed a three-phase study including methods of deliberative civic engagement, open-ended survey and interview.FindingsFindings illustrate the effectiveness of the grant program on developing a shared language and leadership framework and clarifying leadership goals for participants. Implications include the importance of collective leadership development opportunities that center adaptive challenges and convene participants across levels of leadership and sectors. Additionally, the findings highlight the need to consider authority, identity and culture as central components of the practice of leadership. Reflections on the community-engaged methodology demonstrate the value of learning about leadership practices from the community practitioners to inform community leadership development interventions. Implications include approaching research as iterative and pushing back on academic norms that provide tension in engaged work.Originality/valueLittle research crosses all three boundaries of collective leadership, leadership development and civic leadership literature. This intersection focuses on understanding how collective leadership can contribute to enhancing the practice of civic leadership. The current study is situated within this knowledge gap and explores (1) the experiences of members of a civic group who have (2) participated in leadership development that (3) aligns with a collective leadership paradigm and are (4) trying to make progress on an adaptive challenge.

Editorial: Embracing New Horizons

In September 2024, ‘ISRA International Journal of Islamic Finance’ (IJIF) has been rebranded, and its publication is being continued under a new title, ‘International Journal of Islamic Finance and Sustainable Development’ (IJIFSD), following an institutional collaboration between the Islamic Development Bank Institute (IsDBI) and INCEIF University. The collaboration in the publication of IJIFSD marks the interest of both institutions in driving innovative research to create more meaningful real-world impact and support sustainable economic development in societies. The collaboration brings the combined resources and expertise of the two institutions in providing a premier platform for showcasing cutting-edge research by synthesising the principles of Islamic finance and sustainable development practices. While IJIFSD will continue to be published by ISRA Research Management Centre, INCEIF University, it will now have the added leverage of IsDBI to support its sponsorship and ensure its open and free accessibility to readers. The new title incorporates the terms ‘sustainable development’ as a strategic move to align the journal with the evolving landscape of Islamic finance that promotes global sustainability goals and, thus, results in a journal that is broader in scope and coverage. Therefore, besides focusing on the areas of Islamic economics, banking and finance and its related fields—Islamic capital markets, Islamic social finance, takāful (Islamic insurance), Islamic financial law, and Sharīʿah applications in Islamic finance—attention will also be given to the discourse on sustainability and sustainable economic development. With the expanded scope, it is expected that the journal will garner increased appeal to a wider range of authors and readers. It will also be able to reach a wider range of markets that have not yet been served, as well as have greater impact through enhanced citations. The key features of the rebranded journal therefore include: Focus: emerging trends such as green finance, impact investing, financial inclusion. Platform: fostering a community of forward-thinking scholars, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to share insights on issues of concern. Goal: providing practical solutions for sustainable economic development and showcasing Islamic finance’s role in creating shared prosperity.

A transdisciplinary co‐conceptualisation of marine identity

Abstract Challenge 10 of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030) calls for the restoration of society's relationship with the ocean. Research suggests that the relationship people have with marine environments can influence their depth of engagement in marine citizenship action, and the important role for ‘marine identity’ in driving that action. Although identity is well‐researched, marine identity is a concept novel to academia and a baseline understanding is required, both to grasp the scope of the concept, and to support research into its role in transforming the human‐ocean relationship. Here, a transdisciplinary study, endorsed as a UN Ocean Decade Activity and by the EU Mission Ocean & Waters, brought together a multinational community of marine researchers and practitioners to co‐produce a baseline conceptualisation of marine identity, drawing on photovoice and deliberative methodology. This paper presents the findings of the co‐production process and offers a first introduction in the literature of the multiple variations and formations of marine identity. We find marine identity to be a complex and multidimensional concept, suffused with individual experiences and understandings of the marine environment, based on social and cultural understandings of the ocean, contemporarily and historically. We present real‐world examples of marine identity to illustrate key themes that were developed through co‐production. Policy implications: We propose marine identity as a catalyst for understanding existing multifaceted and caring relationships with the ocean, as well as the restoration of society's relationship with the ocean. Marine identity research should, therefore, be prioritised in research seeking to contribute to the UN Ocean Decade Challenge 10, as this will support integration of non‐material values of the ocean into marine planning processes and policy making, enabling effective responses to Challenge 10's emphasis on integrating traditional/cultural ways of knowing and valuing the marine environment, through diverse marine identities. We welcome research efforts that will further develop the marine identity concept and empirically investigate the relationships between marine identity, marine citizenship, and people's relationships with the ocean. Iowa’s Integrated Data System for Decision-Making (I2D2): a collaborative approach for responsible and relevant use of population data

Integrated data systems (IDS) bring together people, processes, and priorities in a disciplined approach to generate evidence about child and family needs and service system gaps. In response to pressure for more efficiently coordinated early childhood services, Iowa built an IDS as a collaborative effort between university researchers and government leaders. Iowa’s Integrated Data System for Decision-Making (I2D2) includes an engaged governance approach that has received national attention as a model for ensuring federal and state priorities direct the work, rigorous scientific standards are used, and community engaged users have access to the information they need when they need it. This presentation will describe I2D2’s governance and technology solutions and provide examples of cyclical, community-engaged projects that have informed program improvement. Multi-stage integration protocols ensure individual records from disparate systems in health, education, child welfare, and workforce are accurately matched within a process that attends to equity. Dissemination processes within communities of practitioners, executive leaders, and researchers ensure findings are relevant and used to drive strategic planning. Public facing dashboards and interactive applications display prioritized indicators and support improved data literacy and common language across partner groups. Examples of use will be discussed including the evolution of a statewide strategic planning process using integrated data indicators, evidence-based expansion of home visiting programming to meet the needs of underserved families, and support for sustainable childcare businesses through the availability of real-time vacancy, supply, and demand data and easy to access applications for families to find available care when they need it.

Evaluating Audience Engagement as a Measure of Digital Diplomacy Effectiveness

This article presents relevant tools for analyzing engagement in digital diplomacy, where ‘engagement’ is defined as the two-way interaction between a digital diplomacy channel on social media and its users. Existing methods for evaluating engagement often fail to fully utilize the available data or lack the flexibility needed for specific diplomatic purposes. Using the case study of US digital diplomacy in Russia, this paper addresses two research questions: (1) To what extent are the automated evaluation metrics developed by data aggregator platforms applicable for analyzing engagement in digital diplomacy? (2) Do these metrics help identify significant patterns in digital diplomacy?The findings of our pilot study indicate that the automated engagement metrics provided by the Popsters and TGStat data aggregator services effectively measure engagement in terms of audience reach and expansion, geographic distribution of traffic, overall engagement, and engagement based on content type (text, photo, video, or link) or text length. The analysis of selected metrics reveals two key trends in US digital diplomacy in Russia: since 2022 there has been a notable shift in focus toward Telegram as the primary platform, and while the content partially reaches the existing Russian-speaking audience, it struggles to expand its overall reach.The authors provide six recommendations for diplomatic agencies and consulting firms to enhance the tools for analyzing digital diplomacy engagement: (1) adopt automated engagement metrics that account for the interface differences among social media platforms; (2) incorporate built-in topic modeling of posts; (3) integrate sentiment analysis of comments; (4) develop mechanisms to detect traffic manipulation; (5) track multi-level reposts, the timing and spread of hashtag diplomacy, and audience growth considering these processes; and (6) evaluate digital diplomacy activity concerning responses to comments. The authors advocate for closer collaboration between the academic community and diplomatic practitioners to improve engagement metrics and thereby enhance the effectiveness of digital diplomacy.

The imperative of teamwork in antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) interventions: insights from an ethnographic study with practitioners in Spain.

Teamwork-the activity of working together in a group towards a similar goal-is a defining feature of the practice of clinical medicine carried out in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. This Viewpoint suggests that teamwork is a defining feature of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programmes, and identifies six elements that characterise AMS team dynamics. These insights arise from an original ethnographic study of AMS carried out in Spain, where these programmes are known as Programas para la Optimización de Antimicrobianos. The study used qualitative research methods including ethnographic observations in public hospitals and scientific and educational fora, in-depth interviews and archival research. It calls for a reflection on the part of the global community of AMS practitioners on the role of team dynamics in building sustainable AMS interventions and the inclusion of teamwork skills in training curricula aimed at future practitioners.

Quantitative Assessment of Market Conditions and Marketing Strategies in the Financial Products Sector: A Case Study of XX Insurance Company, Beijing

The financial products sector in China has undergone significant transformation, driven by economic reforms, technological advancements, and evolving consumer preferences. This study provides a quantitative assessment of market conditions and marketing strategies within this sector, with a specific focus on XX Insurance Company, Beijing. Utilizing a cross-sectional survey of 200 respondents in Beijing, the research examines key factors influencing market dynamics, evaluates the effectiveness of XX Insurance Company’s marketing strategies, and identifies the main drivers of consumer behavior. The findings reveal a generally favorable market environment, with economic growth, regulatory changes, and competitive dynamics as primary influencers. Notably, product features, competitive pricing, strong brand reputation, and excellent customer service emerged as significant factors affecting consumer decisions. The study highlights the importance of digital presence, customer service, and innovative product offerings in enhancing marketing effectiveness. Based on the insights gained, several recommendations are proposed to optimize the company’s marketing strategies and improve its market positioning. This research contributes valuable knowledge to both the academic community and industry practitioners, offering practical guidance for navigating the competitive landscape of China's insurance market.
