“It is my place”: residents’ community-based psychological ownership and its impact on rural tourism participation

The participation of residents plays a crucial role in achieving sustainable development of tourism in rural community. This study proposes a novel concept, namely community-based psychological ownership (C-PO) and examines its dimensionality and association with community participation in rural tourism. The scale of C-PO was developed through 4 stages. In Stage 1, initial item pool with 25 items is generated based on a qualitative study from Shangchengdai and Dachen Village in Zhejiang, China. Through Stage 2 and Stage 3, a 23-item six-dimensional scale is confirmed using data collected in two on-site surveys (n = 93, n = 416) at Maoyang Township, Zhejiang. In Study 4, using survey data (n = 485) collected from Heyang Village and Maoyang Township, Zhejiang, the relationships between C-PO and community participation in rural tourism development are examined. The results indicate that self-identity, self-efficacy, community responsibility and community belongingness have positive effects on community participation, while community possession and territoriality have a non-significant and negative impact, respectively. Recommendations are provided for better encouraging community participation in tourism development by managing residents’ psychological ownership towards their communities.

Redesigning Tourism Community Participation Management: Integrating Digital Technology with the Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) Approach

The soft systems methodology (SSM) method is used in this study to address the perspective of community collective engagement (Participation with the community) in the context of tourist awareness groups. This study aims to develop a new model that can increase community engagement in the use of digital technology for tourist objectives. This research examines difficulties and formulates novel digital technology solutions through case studies on tourist awareness groups. The findings of this study suggest that the SSM method may give a comprehensive picture and enable the building of relevant and successful models. This study contributes significantly to our understanding of how to improve community engagement in technology-based tourist situations

Journey to Resilience: Sustainable Tourism and Community Participation in Jammu and Kashmir

This article delves into the intricate dynamics of sustainable tourism development and community participation in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, exploring its diverse regions of Jammu and Kashmir. Famed for its breathtaking landscapes, cultural richness, and historical significance, the region has witnessed significant growth in the tourism sector. The literature review underscores the critical role of community participation in achieving sustainable tourism, emphasizing factors such as perceived comparative benefits, individual aspirations, and the preference for tourism-related employment. The government's multifaceted approach, blending infrastructure development, cultural preservation, and environmental conservation, forms the backdrop of the discussion. Insights from a theoretical framework and factors influencing community participation in tourism are presented, offering a nuanced understanding of the diverse approaches and impacts on communities. The study site, Jammu and Kashmir, with its resilient tourism potential and ongoing government initiatives, serves as a unique case study for sustainable tourism development. The conclusion outlines key recommendations, including capacity-building initiatives, communication strategies, and policy reforms, while proposing future research directions. This comprehensive exploration contributes to the discourse on fostering a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable tourism model in the distinctive context of Jammu and Kashmir.

Challenges of community participation in tourism planning in developing countries

The purpose of this study is to analyze the challenges faced by the community in participating in sustainable tourism in developing countries. The research was conducted using a systematic literature study on scientific articles indexed by Scopus from 2018–2022 with the theme of community participation in tourism planning. Inclusion criteria are articles from developing countries determined by the International Monetary Fund. The findings show that the constraints on community participation can be categorized into three main groups: operational, structural, and cultural. Operational constraints include lack of access to information, lack of efficient decision-making structures, lack of discussion platforms, lack of knowledge, and lack of transparency and accountability. Structural constraints identified include lack of access to planning experts, weak community development, lack of budget, lack of education, and unsuitable policy and governance. Finally, cultural barriers include the history of colonialism, community awareness, mistrust, power disparities, unequal distribution of costs and benefits, and conflict of interests. Governments and sustainable tourism operators must systematically address these issues to encourage broader community participation in tourism.

Building community cohesion for effective community participation in community based tourism

Purpose: The purpose of this research was to determine the influence community cohesion has in enabling effective Community participation in community based tourism within Kisite Mpunguti Ecosystem.
 Methodology: Adopting descriptive and explanatory research design, the study employed both quantitative and qualitative methods in data collection; community households within Kisite Mpunguti Ecosystem involved in community based tourism for semi-structured questionnaires. Quantitative data was processed using descriptive and inferential statistics with content analysis used for qualitative data.
 Main findings: revealed that although community cohesion had a negative association with community participation, the relationship to community participation was significant thus concluding it as a determinant in enabling successful community participation in community based tourism through elements like inclusion, belonging, equality, recognition and trust among others.
 Applications: This study is useful in the field of Rural and Community Based tourism on the element of factors enabling community participation in tourism, in this case community cohesion factor especially rural areas with unutilized tourism resources and need for alternative sources of income.
 Novelty: Findings provide knowledge to existing Community Based Tourism Projects nationwide on the vital role played by community cohesion anchored on principles like trust, equity, transparency, sharing responsibilities, commitment and respect for one another and authority in achieving effective participation.

Barriers to tourism participation: A case of first‐generation local community service providers

AbstractParticipation in tourism businesses for the local community often comes with various challenges. A better understanding of barriers to tourism development can help manage and smoothen community participation in tourism. Over the past two decades, an effort has been made to understand the barriers to tourism, but the perspective of first‐generation community participation is not explored in the existing literature. The current study measures barriers to tourism participation through four parameters, i.e., sociocultural, infrastructural, operational, and personal barriers. The study examined the barriers of first‐generation service providers from the rural tribal belt of Arunachal Pradesh, India. Data were collected using the purposive sampling technique from various tourism and allied services owned and managed by the local tribal community. The findings indicate that barriers related to the infrastructural support system are the dominant form of barriers. In contrast, the sociocultural factors do not act as a strong barrier among service providers. However, this report defers to other studies on tribal communities that indicate specific sociocultural barriers to participating in the tourism business. The study shows that willingness and conducive sociocultural aspects alone are not sufficient to lead a profitable tourism business. Furthermore, the study also recounts the importance of external intervention for macro‐level planning in tourism infrastructure.

Meaningful community participation for effective development of sustainable tourism: Bibliometric analysis towards a quintuple helix model

Meaningful community participation in tourism is considered a prerequisite for sustainable development at any tourist destination. Due to the growing desirability for development on more sustainable grounds in developed and developing countries, a considerable surge in the emphasis on significance of community participation in tourism sector has been observed in recent years. This led to an increase in the publication of literature on this important and widely recognized phenomenon, both for better understanding and practical reasons. However, there is still no clear picture of the degree and direction in which community participation research in tourism has grown. To address this issue, the current study tried to comprehensively look into the existing state of research in this area of study. This article provides a detailed insight into the literary landscape of community participation research in tourism. A bibliometric analysis of 649 articles screened out of 1434 publications retrieved from Scopus database was conducted. The systematic descriptive and network analysis of bibliometric data using the Biblioshiny and VOSviewer tools yielded some intriguing results. The findings confirm the centrality of community participation in achieving the goal of sustainable development of tourism. This paper while filling the unaddressed gap of the absence of a comprehensive bibliometric study on community participation research in tourism, improves our understanding of the literary landscape and thematic evolution of academic discourse during nearly four decades. Furthermore, a quintuple helix model is proposed to explore and understand the dynamic literary landscape and how it grows and evolves, thus facilitating future research in this area. 1. Meaningful community participation is the key to the sustainable development of tourism at any destination. 2. Despite the complexities involved, the potential role of community participation in mitigating the negative impacts of tourism and its contribution towards achieving sustainable development goals cannot be overlooked. 3. Meaningful community participation should be complemented by socio-economic and political empowerment at tourist destinations. 4. The rapid growth in literature on community participation as explained by the quintuple helix model points towards the growing realization among academicians and practitioners regarding the need for meaningful engagement of destination communities in tourism development.

PARTISIPASI MASYARAKAT DALAM PEMULIHAN PARIWISATA PADA ERA NEW NORMAL DI KSPN BEDUGUL

The research aims to investigate community participation in KSPN Bedugul towards tourism recovery efforts. Data was collected by observation, survey and interview using questionnaires and interview guides. The sampling technique used was purposive and snow ball sampling and the data obtained were analyzed using quantitative descriptive analysis techniques and the typology theory of community participation in tourism from Pretty were referred to. The results showed that the overall community participation in the recovery of tourism in the New Normal era at KSPN Bedugul, appears very small (below 50%). Based on the seven levels of participation typology, the level of participation in the Bedugul community from the lowest can be seen as follows: manipulative participation with average value of 0.556 or 27.8%; passive participation (0.546 or 27.3%); participation by consultation (0.563 or 28.1%); participation for material incentives (0.82 or 41%); functional participation (0.293 or 14.6%); interactive participation (0.156 or 7.8%); self-mobilization and connectedness (0.9 or 45%). It is recommended that stakeholders involve the community in tourism recovery efforts, as well as the re-establishment of organizations such as Pokdarwis. It is also necessary to increase public awareness of the meaning of tourism for improving their standard of living.

TANTANGAN DAN PELUANG PARIWISATA BERBASIS MASYARAKAT DI ERA NEW NORMAL

This paper is compiled to analyze the opportunities and challenges of community-based tourism, in facing the adaptation of a new life in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, tourism potential which is the capital for tourism development and the participation of local communities as the stakeholders main tourism. The choice of research focuses on community participation in tourism, especially in the new normal era due to tourism activities where all activities are carried out by prioritizing the movement from the area of origin to the destination area, making tourism an activity that is vulnerable to the spread of covid - 19. The main challenge in tourism today is more to the level of public awareness of health protocols, opportunities that greatly support Tamansari Tourism Village in the form of a variety of tourist attractions in one tourism destination. The research method approach used is descriptive qualitative research instruments with in-depth interviews, documentation study and involved observation. Tourism in the new normal era is expected to be able to adapt CHSE Cleanliness, Health, Safety, and Environmental Sustainability in order to maintain tourists' confidence in tourist attraction in reducing covid-19 transmission.Keywords: Community Participation, Tourism Village, CHSE

Determinant Factors for Community Participation in Dutungan Island of Barru Regency

Understanding determinant factors in community participation is essential in encouraging community participation in tourism activities. However, community participation studies mainly focused on identifying community participation issues and reasons to advocate community participation. This research aims at 1) exploring factors that affect community participation in tourism, and 2) proposing strategies to encourage active participation by the local community. This paper employs a qualitative methodology conducted in 2019. The research reveals that community participation around Dutungan Island has three categories: supportive participation, micro business-based creation participation and passive participation. The determinant factors for community participation include; 1) private management of tourism attraction; 2) lack of collective awareness by the local community, and 3) lack of skills and knowledge in tourism. This paper proposes the importance of implementing communitybased tourism village; strengthening cooperation between the owner or manager of Dutungan Island and the local community; and optimising Dutungan Island management’s role to help the local people who reside the village. Dutungan Island’s manager should be able to share profit to help the local people through social programs that may include training for the local people and providing investment for micro business. This paper provides insight into how to encourage community participation through the role of different stakeholders, including the island and the local community.

The Escalating Effects of Wildlife Tourism on Human-Wildlife Conflict.

Simple SummaryCommunities adjacent to protected areas usually face conflict with protected wildlife. Wildlife tourism is regarded as a tool to mitigate such conflict through bringing economic benefits to villagers and then increasing villagers’ tolerance of wildlife. We used qualitative methods to conduct a case study on a macaque tourism attraction in China and find that tourism may escalate rather than mitigate community–wildlife conflict. Provisioning food is a common way to attract wild animals to visit and stay in human activity areas. In the case of macaque tourism, anthropogenic food provision caused rapid population increase and more intra-group aggressive behaviors. More tourist–macaque interactions resulted in macaques becoming habituated to human’s presence. These ecological impacts on macaques led more invasion to the surrounding community and intensified resident–macaque conflict. Meanwhile, low community participation in tourism generated few benefits for residents and did not help alter residents’ hostile attitudes towards the macaques. Local residents gradually retreated from agriculture as the macaques became more intrusive. We propose a holistic model combining social and ecological perspectives to evaluate the role of wildlife tourism in resolving community–wildlife conflict. We suggest that wildlife tourism should minimize human–wildlife intimate interactions and food provision.Human–wildlife conflict is a barrier to achieving sustainable biodiversity conservation and community development in protected areas. Tourism is often regarded as a tool to mitigate such conflict. However, existing studies have mainly adopted a socio-economic perspective to examine the benefits of tourism for communities, neglecting the ecological effects of tourism. This case study of macaque tourism on a peninsula in China illustrates that tourism can escalate rather than mitigate human–wildlife conflict. Fifty-three stakeholders were interviewed and secondary data were collected to understand the development of rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) tourism and community–macaque conflict. The results show that food provision and tourist–macaque interactions rapidly increased the macaques’ population, habituation, and aggressive behaviors, which led them to invade the surrounding community more often and exacerbated human–macaque conflict. Meanwhile, low community participation in tourism generated few benefits for residents and did not help alter residents’ hostile attitudes towards the macaques. Local residents gradually retreated from agriculture as the macaques became more intrusive. A holistic approach to evaluating the role of wildlife tourism in resolving community–wildlife conflict is proposed and practical suggestions for alleviating such conflict are given.

Limitations to community participation in tourism from local people’s perspectives: Manicaland Province, Zimbabwe

ABSTRACT This article, examines the perspectives of rural people in Manicaland on the barriers to community participation in tourism. A qualitative approach was selected to give local people from the four districts of Manicaland a voice. In-depth interviews, observations and informal conversations were used to collect data. Data was collected from the various levels of the local communities. Data was collected from 43 local people in Manicaland and twenty more interviews were done with key informants. The findings indicate that local people are limited to participate in tourism by their lack of tourism knowledge, limited finance, peripherality, the marginalisation of women, and elite domination. Suggestions are made to mitigate these barriers. These findings may expose the strengths and weaknesses of the current strategies and approaches used to promote community participation in Zimbabwe’s community-based tourism development, making way for the best policies and approaches to boost community participation in tourism.

Community Based Tourism (CBT) is among several types of tourism that have been considered sustainable and beneficial to the host populations in conservation areas. The local community participation in tourism in conservation areas is supposed to be high and its members should benefit from the tourism process. However, having been presented with opportunity to improve their livelihoods, communities are constrained in various ways and generally fail to benefit from tourism development. This study was set to investigate constraints to community participation in conservation areas. It was carried out in Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary (MES) in Kwale County, Kenya, using a descriptive survey design. Data was collected using researcher administered questionnaires and oral interviews. The results indicated that lack of coordination among stakeholders; inadequate financial resources, lack of conducive environment for tourism growth, and lack of skills/knowledge were major constraints to participation. The study concludes that to address both operational and structural constraints to community participation, the national and county governments should develop policies that compel investors to honour agreements with communities, assist communities to enter into fair collaborations with investors, and provide incentives to investors in tourism.

Towards a Spontaneous Community Participation Model in Community-Based Tourism

This article proposes guidelines and themes related to the advancement of spontaneous community participation for community-based tourism (CBT). Community-based tourism has its own difficulties and challenges, however it can still be a valuable strategy to advance community development through tourism. Globally, CBT has been embraced as a tourism development approach in various geographical contexts. In South Africa the Government has published specific Operational guidelines for community-based tourism and reflects on community participation in tourism over the last decades. This paper does not intend to idealise CBT or deny the possible use of external assistance. However, it proposes a facilitative approach, as the base of spontaneous participation to positively favour community spontaneous participation in CBT. This article proposes a community participation model, based on the extrapolation of themes on spontaneous participation. The proposed model is flexible and adjustable to various contexts aimed for global relevance. This is a conceptual paper based on secondary data and was compiled from existing literature and online sources.

Local Community Participation in Tourism in Siau Island, Sitaro District, North Sulawesi, Indonesia

This research aims to determine the role played by local communities in developing tourism on the island of Siau and also to find out how the government moves local people in the tourism sector. The research method used is qualitative research with descriptive methods. The data collection technique used interviews with several informants to the local community, members of the Sitaro Nature Lovers Community (KOMPAS), the Chairperson of the DPC Sitaro Indonesian Tourism Association and to the government, namely the Head of the Tourism and Culture Office of Siau Regency, Tagulandang Biaro (Sitaro). From the results of the research, there is participation by local communities in tourism on Siau Island in the form of selling food near tourist objects, maintaining tourist objects and maintaining cleanliness. The local community is also involved in the development of tourism on Siau Island. The government's role in mobilizing local communities to help in the tourism sector is still not optimal because there are still tourist objects that have not been optimally managed.

Digitalization in the Community-based Tourism Development in Peripheral Areas: A Case Study of Sumbermanjing Wetan Village, Malang Regency

The paradigm of digital-based peripheral area tourism development is carried out within a broader development of technology and communication in Indonesia. This is done as a way to reduce the level of disparity between the city and the peripheral region. This study examines the paradigm of local communities related to digital-based tourism development. This digital-based tourism development is illustrated through the case of community-based tourism in the Sumbermanjing Wetan area of Malang Regency. This article shows that community participation in tourism is classified into three forms of local participation. First, digital-based tourism can be solutions for tourism development in the Sumbermanjing Wetan region. Second, the community also understand the digitalization of tourism as an effort to alleviate poverty and improve the welfare of local communities. Third, digital-based tourism can be the strategy for improving the quality of life of the Sumbermanjing Wetan community.

PARTISIPASI MASYARAKAT DALAM PENGELOLAAN OBJEK DAN DAYA TARIK WISATA KORIDOR JALUR LINTAS SELATAN KABUPATEN MALANG

Local community participation in tourism development has been identified crucial, but it was few discussed in South Malang Regency, East Java. The purpose of this study is to examine the role of the community in the development of natural tourism attraction along Southern corridors on East East Java from Balekambang to Sendang Biru. Field survey and interviews were implemented to generate infromation related to the types of local community participation in tourism along the corridor. This research shows that there are two important bodies in natural resources management that influeces the management of recreation sites mnagament, namely Office of Tourism of Malanag Regency and Perhutani KPH Malang. The form of community participation in the JLS Beach Tourism Corridor in South Malang tends to be dominated by the functional participation model. This participation model forms a community to jointly develop, give advice and plan tourist destinations as a form of appreciation for the existence of local community institutions but the decision makers in planning tourist destinations are dominated by parties outside the community, namely Perhutani.

The evolving path of community participation in tourism in China

While there has been a plethora of research on community participation in tourism, most has relied upon a single survey or other form of data acquisition that lacks a dynamic component. Therefore, there is a need for longitudinal research to examine any changes in that participation. This article explores the evolution of participation in tourism in two communities, Nanshan and Tangfeng, in Hainan, China. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 24 villagers, and secondary data were collected to supplement the qualitative research. It postulates four stages of community involvement in sharing benefits and decision making: impactee, beneficiary, client, and owner. It is found that, in the cases under consideration, the evolution of participation has been slow, and the benefits to the communities from tourism and access to decision-making power are limited, with the power structure involved with tourism resorts being the main reason for this slow progress. Three suggestions are proposed to address this situation: capacity building, partnership, and institutional empowerment.
