Employment status and depressive symptoms in taiwanese older adults: an 11-year prospective cohort study

BackgroundTaiwan became an aged society in March 2018, and it is expected to become a super-aged society by 2025. The trend of increasing proportions of older adults continuing to work is inevitable. However, few studies have been conducted to investigate the effects of employment on the mental health of older adults. Therefore, we longitudinally explored the relationship between employment status and depressive symptoms in Taiwanese older adults.MethodsThe study included 5,131 individuals aged 50 and above, of which 55.6% were men, who had participated in the national-wide Taiwan Longitudinal Study of Aging in 1996, 1999, 2003, and 2007. Of them, 1,091 older adults had completed all four surveys. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Center for Epidemiological Studies of Depression scale; the total score on this scale ranges from 0 to 30. Employment status was assessed during each survey wave. Logistic regression was performed using a cross-sectional design. The effects of unemployment on depressive symptoms were analyzed using a generalized estimating equation model with a repeated measures design.ResultsIn each survey wave, employed older adults exhibited better mental health than did unemployed ones. After adjustments for potential confounders, unemployment was found to exert a significant adverse effect on depressive symptoms. The repeated measures analysis revealed that employment protected against depressive symptoms, as noted in the subsequent surveys conducted after 3 to 4 years (aOR [95% CI] = 0.679 [0.465–0.989]).ConclusionEmployment may reduce the risk of depressive symptoms in community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan.

Prevalence and Associated Factors with Frailty Using the Kihon Checklist among Community-Dwelling Older Adults in Taiwan.

Background and Objectives: Frailty in older adults is associated with adverse health outcomes. This study aimed to analyze the frailty status of community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan using the Kihon Checklist (KCL) and explore associations with demographic, physiological, and functional factors. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 278 community-dwelling older adults were classified as robust, prefrail, or frail based on their KCL scores. Participants underwent physical fitness assessments including muscle strength and endurance tests, walking speed tests, and flexibility tests. One-way ANOVA and logistic regression analyses were used to examine differences and associations between frailty status and physical fitness indicators. Results: 36% of participants were robust, 47.1% prefrail, and 16.9% frail. The robust group significantly outperformed the prefrail and frail groups in the 30 s sit-to-stand test, 2.44 m sit-to-walk test, and walking speed (p < 0.001). The 2.44 m sit-to-walk test was a significant predictor of prefrailty (OR = 1.18, 95% CI = 1.02-1.36) after adjusting for other physical fitness indicators. Conclusions: Lower limb functional capacity, particularly in the 2.44 m sit-to-walk test, was significantly associated with pre-frailty among community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan. Early screening, the classification of frailty by the Kihon Checklist, and targeted interventions focusing on lower limb strength, endurance, and mobility are crucial for preventing and delaying frailty progression in older populations.

The Role of Place Attachment in the Relationship between Attitudes toward Aging and Subjective Well-Being among Community-Dwelling Older Adults in Taiwan.

Subjective well-being presents a societal challenge for vulnerable older adults. This study aims to investigate the mediating role of place attachment in the relationship between attitudes toward aging and subjective well-being among community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan. Two waves of investigations were conducted to examine the interplay between attitudes toward aging, subjective well-being, and place attachment among older adults. In Wave I, 1190 participants were enrolled, revealing predominantly younger cohorts with substantial educational levels. The subsequent Wave II involved 483 participants, maintaining continuity in characteristics. Subjective well-being remained moderate across waves, with prevalent positive attitudes toward aging. Place attachment scores indicated moderate to high associations. After controlling for demographics, structural equation modeling (SEM) in both waves revealed significant positive associations: attitudes toward aging influenced well-being, attitudes toward aging were positively associated with place attachment, and place attachment was positively related to well-being. Mediation testing confirmed the mediating role of place attachment in the relationship between attitudes toward aging and well-being. These findings underscore the important role of place attachment. It is evident that improving attitudes toward aging is an effective intervention which can lead to a better sense of well-being by enhancing place attachment to empower civil society.

A simple scoring algorithm based on intrinsic capacity for functional ability in community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan

BackgroundIntrinsic capacity (IC) is a comprehensive indicator of the overall well-being of older adults, and assessing of IC can help identify early stage of disability and tailor intervention to individual needs. However, there is a lack of effective and simple IC assessment tools. This study aimed to establish predictive scoring algorithms of IC to identify older adults at high risk of impaired functional ability.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional study in Southern Taiwan, measuring IC using 7 subitems: cognition, locomotion, vitality, vision, hearing, psychological well-being, and medication usage were measured. Functional ability outcomes included frailty, basic activities of daily living, and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). The capability of 7 domains of IC in predicting functional ability was assessed by multivariable logistic regression. The prediction of capability of scoring algorithms was indicated by receiver operating characteristic (AUC) curves and measures of sensitivity and specificity.ResultsA total of 1,152 older adults were recruited and analyzed. Locomotion emerged as a significant predictor of IADL disability and worsening frailty. The IC-based weighted scoring algorism for predicting IADL demonstrated satisfactory capability (AUC: 0.80), as did the algorithm for predicting worsening frailty (AUC: 0.90). The optimal cutoff points for predicting IADL disability and frailty worse were estimated respectively at 13 and 16, with sensitivity/specificity values of 0.74/0.75 for the IADL prediction algorithm and 0.92/0.77 for the frailty prediction algorithm.ConclusionOur 7-domain IC screening tool proves to be sensitive and practical for early identification of functional disability and frailty among community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan.

THE MEDIATING EFFECT OF PLACE ATTACHMENT ON ATTITUDE TOWARD AGING AND PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING

Abstract Psychological well-being has become a social challenge for vulnerable older adults and age-friendly cities/communities has been a key aging policy focusing on environmental factors to enhance well-being in Taiwan. However, how older adults perceive their living environments and whether it is important when advocating older adults’ positive attitudes toward aging leading to psychological well-being remains unknown. One of the place attachment dimensions is psychological attachment which has attracted attention in planning for aging in place and age-friendly communities (Aliakbarzadeh et al., 2021; 2022). This study aims to investigate whether psychological attachment mediated the relationship between attitudes toward aging and psychological well-being among community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan. A faced-to-faced interview of 306 individuals aged 50 and over living in the community were interviewed. The Cronbach’s alpha of all scales was over 0.70 which showed good reliability. The associations and mediation effects were tested using structural equation modeling (SEM) and the model fitted the data adequately. After controlling for sex and age, the SEM findings demonstrated that the lower level of negative attitudes toward aging were significantly and positively associated with well-being (direct effect = 0.16, p &amp;lt;0.05). Furthermore, the lower level of negative attitudes toward aging was positively related with place attachment and consequently predicted better psychological well-being (indirect effect = 0.048, p = 0.034; total effect = 0.209, p= 0.003). We suggest that place attachment should be monitored in the policy of age-friendly communities while improving older adults’ positive attitudes toward aging leading to a better sense of well-being.

Social network associated with depressed mood and sarcopenia among older adults in Taiwan

Social isolation is increasing in aging societies; however, its relationship with depressed mood and sarcopenia is not well studied. This study aims to examine the influence of social network on depressed mood and sarcopenia among community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan. We collected data from a sample of 981 older adults residing in the community. These individuals received government-subsidized preventive healthcare services for adults at a district hospital in Taipei in 2021. The social network of the older adults who participated was assessed using the Lubben Social Network Scale, while depressed mood was assessed using the Geriatric Depression Scale. The definition of sarcopenia used in this study was based on the 2019 Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia. According to this study, sarcopenia was present in approximately 15% of older adults. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that older adults who had poor social network and did not meet the recommended 150min of regular physical activity per week were more likely to have depressed mood. Additionally, older adults who were older, underweight, did not engage in regular physical activity, and had poor social network were more likely to have sarcopenia. Poor social network was associated with increased risks of depressed mood and sarcopenia among older adults.

Environment profiles, social participation patterns, depressive symptoms and quality of life of disabled older adults: a longitudinal investigation

Objectives This study used the World Health Organization’s healthy ageing framework to explore longitudinal influences of environment profiles and social participation (SP) patterns on depressive symptoms (DSs) and on quality of life (QOL). Methods Data were collected from a sample of community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan in 2018 (T1; N = 1,314) and a follow-up survey in 2020 (T2; N = 831). Latent class analysis was conducted to obtain environment and SP profiles. Multilevel modeling was carried out to explicate the hypothesized associations. Results Three unique environment profiles, labeled as Highly- (Highly-FE), Moderately- (Moderately-FE) and Weakly-Facilitative Environment (Weakly-FE), were identified from T1 data. The three SP classes that were obtained from T1 and T2 data denoted High-, Moderate- and Low-SP. Participants in the ‘Highly-FE’ class were more likely to belong to the ‘High-SP’ and ‘Moderate-SP’ subgroups and exhibited significantly fewer DSs and better QOL. The associations were confirmed both cross-sectionally and longitudinally. Conclusion Interventions should be developed to promote or maintain preferred SP to maximize the current and future mental health and subjective well-being of disabled older adults.

The factors associated with cognitive function among community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan

BackgroundThis research aimed to investigate the associations of anthropometric measurements, physiological parameters, chronic disease comorbidities, and social and lifestyle factors with cognitive function amongst community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan.MethodsThis was an observational, cross-sectional study involving 4,578 participants at least 65 years old, recruited between January 2008 and December 2018 from the Annual Geriatric Health Examinations Program. Cognitive function was assessed using the short portable mental state questionnaire (SPMSQ). Multivariable logistic regression was done to analyze the factors associated with cognitive impairment. ResultsAmong the 4,578 participants, 103 people (2.3%) with cognitive impairment were identified. Associated factors were age (odds ratio (OR) = 1.16, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.13,1.20), male gender (OR = 0.39, 95% CI = 0.21,0.72), diabetes mellitus (DM) (OR = 1.70, 95% CI = 1.03, 2.82), hyperlipidemia (OR = 0.47, 95% CI = 0.25, 0.89), exercise (OR = 0.44, 95% CI = 0.34, 0.56), albumin (OR = 0.37, 95% CI = 0.15, 0.88), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (OR = 0.98, 95% CI = 0.97, 1.00). Whereas waistline, alcohol intake in recent six months, and hemoglobin was not significantly associated with cognitive impairment (all p > 0.05).ConclusionsOur findings suggested that people with older age and a history of DM had a higher risk of cognitive impairment. Male gender, a history of hyperlipidemia, exercise, a high albumin level, and a high HDL level seemed to be associated with a lower risk of cognitive impairment amongst older adults.

Transitions of self-management behaviors and frailty status among community-dwelling older adults: a national longitudinal population-based cohort study

BackgroundFrailty in older adults is a common geriatric syndrome that could be prevented; thus, coping strategies for the aging population are essential. Self-management behaviors may represent cost-effective strategies to prevent physical frailty in community-dwelling older adults. This study aimed to describe the changes in frailty status among community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan and investigate the association between transitions of self-management behaviors and frailty status over 4 years of follow-up (2007 to 2011).MethodsData were retrieved from the Taiwan Longitudinal Study of Aging (TLSA), years 2007 and 2011. In this prospective cohort study, 1283 community-dwelling older adults aged 65 years and older without cognitive impairment were recruited. Frailty was defined based on Fried’s frailty phenotype. Self-management behaviors (maintaining body weight, quitting smoking or no smoking, drinking less or no drinking, exercising, keeping diet control, and maintaining a regular lifestyle) were assessed using a questionnaire. Multinomial logistic regression analyses were used to investigate the associations between changes in self-management behaviors and in frailty status. The age group was further stratified to examine the moderation effect in the relationship between changes in self-management behaviors and in frailty status among older adults.ResultsThe prevalence of frailty was 8.7% at baseline and 14.9% after 4 years of follow-up, with 196 (15.3%) deaths. Overall, 514 (40.1%) participants maintained their frailty status, 424 (33.0%) worsened, and only 149 (11.6%) improved. Being aged ≥75 years old, having chronic diseases, and an absence of self-management behaviors were associated with frailty at baseline and after follow-up. Among individuals aged 65–74, compared to those who maintained no self-management behaviors, those who decreased the exercise behaviors (yes-to-no) had a higher risk of worsening (RRR = 2.518), while increasing (no-to-yes) and maintaining (yes-to-yes) frequent physical exercise were associated with a lower risk of worsening (RRR = 0.466 and 0.572, respectively) than stable frailty; those who maintained body weight (yes-to-yes) were associated with a lower risk of worsening (RRR = 0.327) than stable frailty after controlling for individual covariates and chronic diseases. Among individuals over 75 years old, compared to no exerciser, older old who decreased their physical exercise had a higher risk of frailty worsening (RRR = 3.255), and increasing frequent physical exercise (no-to-yes) was associated with an improvement in frailty status (RRR = 3.684). Age was a moderator between the effects of maintaining body weight on frailty worsening. There were no associations between the behavioral transitions of smoking, drinking, diet control, or regular lifestyle on the frailty status changes.ConclusionsMaintaining body weight and frequent physical exercise increased the ratio of frailty stability among individuals 65–74 years old. Increasing exercise behavior is the only factor to improve their frailty status among older adults aged 75 years and over. Older adults should be encouraged to perform adequate physical exercise and maintain a healthy body weight to maintain the frailty status in younger old aged 65–74 years, and especially perform more frequent exercise to improve frailty status in older old over 75 years.

Frailty and Quality of Life among Older Adults in Communities: The Mediation Effects of Daily Physical Activity and Healthy Life Self-Efficacy.

As the global population ages, frailty, which has been shown to affect and predict the quality of life (QoL) of older adults, has become a central issue. The aim of this study was to explore the mediating effects of daily physical activity (DPA) and healthy life self-efficacy (HLSE) on the relationship between frailty and QoL in older adults using a serial multiple mediation model. The cross-sectional study was conducted among 210 community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan. Data were collected using the Taiwanese version of the Tilburg Frailty Indicator, the EuroQoL visual analog scale, the Kihon Checklist, and the Chronic Disease Self-Efficacy Scales. The PROCESS macro for SPSS based on the bootstrap method was used to determine the mediating effects of DPA and HLSE on the relationship between frailty and QoL. The results showed that frailty was found to have both direct and indirect effects on QoL. As predicted, DPA and HLSE partially mediated the relationship between frailty and quality of life (DPA: B = -0.71, p &lt; 0.001; HLSE: B = -0.32, p &lt; 0.001). In addition, serial mediation analyses indicated that the association between frailty and QoL was partially mediated by DPA and HLSE in a sequential manner (B = -0.16, p &lt; 0.001). The serial mediation has a causal chain linking DPA and HLSE, with a specified direction of causal flow. According to the results of the serial multiple mediation model, the elderly should be encouraged to continue their activities in daily life, which not only improves self-efficacy and confidence in maintaining health but also reduces the negative impact of frailty on QoL.

Physical fitness and its correlation with handgrip strength in active community-dwelling older adults

In this cross-sectional study, we assessed the physical fitness levels of active community-dwelling older adults. Moreover, we investigated the correlation of their (stratified by age and sex) fitness levels with handgrip strength (HGS). Comprehensive physical fitness tests, including sarcopenia screening, were conducted with a total of 2,130 older adults residing in a rural area of Taiwan. The 5th, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, and 95th percentiles of age- and sex-specific physical fitness levels were determined. Furthermore, we identified the key parameters for assessing the physical fitness of older adults and performed stepwise multiple linear regression analysis. Both men and women exhibited age-related decreases in all aspects of functional fitness, a trend indicating that older adults in Taiwan may lose their independence in the future. Furthermore, the regression analysis revealed that HGS was positively correlated with sex, body mass index, and the results of 30-s arm curl and back scratch tests but negatively correlated with age and the result of 8-foot up-and-go test. Our reference values for physical fitness may help assess the fitness levels of active community-dwelling older adults and design community-based health programs to prevent the early loss of independence in community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan.

Determinants associated with medical-related long-term care service use among community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan

IntroductionMedical-related long-term care (LTC) service use among community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan is resource-intensive, and planning is essential to promote aging-in-place. MethodsAdministrative data from 4/1/2017 to 11/26/2019 among more than 14,000 residents were analyzed with generalized estimating equations (GEEs) to identify determinants of medical-related LTC service use. ResultsOlder adults using medical-related LTC services tended to be younger (79.9 vs. 80.7; p<.0001), male (42.7% vs. 38.5%; p<.0001), multi-morbid (3.1 vs. 2.5; p<.0001), and higher mean activities of daily living (ADL) disability (8.2 vs. 4.2; p<.0001), instrumental ADL (IADL) disability (11.0 vs. 9.1; p<.0001), and hospitalizations (1.1 vs. 0.4; p<.0001). Significant determinants of medical-related LTC services include age, education, stroke, coronary heart disease, diabetes, vision impairment, ADL disability, and prior hospitalization. DiscussionThe success of LTC 2.0 will depend on ADL support and care coordination to manage chronic conditions such as diabetes, vision impairment, coronary heart disease, and stroke.

Normative Data of Mini-Mental State Examination, Montreal Cognitive Assessment, and Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive Subscale of Community-Dwelling Older Adults in Taiwan

Introduction: Appropriate tools and references are essential for evaluating individuals’ cognitive levels. This study validated the Taiwan version of the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive subscale (ADAS-cog) and provided normative data for the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), and ADAS-cog in community-dwelling older adults. Methods: MMSE, MoCA, and ADAS-cog were administered to 150 nondemented healthy adults aged 55–85 years during 2018–2020 as part of the Northeastern Taiwan Community Medicine Research Cohort. ADAS-cog was translated from the original English version to traditional Chinese with cultural and language considerations in Taiwan. Cronbach’s alpha (α) tested the reliability of ADAS-cog, and Pearson correlations examined its external validity using MMSE and MoCA as comparisons. Normative data were generated and stratified by age and education, and the one-way analysis of variance compared scores between age and education groups. Another 20 hospital-acquired participants with cognitive impairment joined the 150 healthy participants. Comparisons in the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) tiers tested the discriminability of the tests for different cognitive levels. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) analyzed the power of ADAS-cog in predicting CDR 0.5 from CDR 0. Results: The Taiwan version of ADAS-cog had fair reliability between items (α = 0.727) and good correlations to MMSE (r = −0.673, p < 0.001) and MoCA (r = −0.746, p < 0.001). The normative data of MMSE, MoCA, and ADAS-cog showed ladder changes with age (p = 0.006, 0.001, and 0.437) and education (p < 0.001, <0.001, and <0.001) in the 150 nondemented older adults. Next, in the 170 mixed participants from the communities and the hospital, MMSE, MoCA, and ADAS-cog scores were well differentiable between CDR 0, 0.5, and 1. In addition, ADAS-cog discriminated CDR 0.5 from 0 by an AUROC of 0.827 (p < 0.001). Discussion/Conclusion: The three structured cognitive tests consistently reflect cognitive levels of healthy older adults. The Taiwan version of ADAS-cog is compatible with MMSE and MoCA to distinguish people with mildly impaired from normal cognition. In addition, this study derived MMSE, MoCA, and ADAS-cog norms tailored to demographic factors. The findings highlight the need for stratification of age and education rather than applying a fixed cutoff for defining normal and abnormal cognition.

Sex-Influenced Risk Factors for Cognitive Impairment Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

The current study aimed to explore sex-influenced risk factors for cognitive impairment among community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan. This cross-sectional study was a secondary analysis using a population-based design. We accessed and analyzed data from the Taiwan Longitudinal Study on Aging survey of 2011. Participants were older adults aged ≥55 years living in non-indigenous townships. A total of 3,392 community-dwelling older adults were included. Results showed that the prevalence of cognitive impairment in females and males was 15.3% and 5.7%, respectively. Having a low educational level and being single (i.e., single, widowed, or divorced) were risk factors for cognitive impairment in both sexes. Males who had more than two chronic diseases had a higher risk of cognitive impairment. Self-reported hearing loss and depression increased risk of cognitive impairment in older females. Older age, lower educational level, and single marital status were associated with cognitive impairment among community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan. The effects of self-reported hearing loss, depression, and chronic disease on cognitive impairment were influenced by sex. [Journal of Gerontological Nursing, 48(6), 19-25.].

New insight into chronic pruritus’ characteristics and association with the demographic characteristics and sleep of community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan

This study aimed to understand the characteristics of chronic pruritus (CP), its correlations with sleep quality and demographic characteristics, and its impacts on sleep of older adults. This study used convenience sampling to recruit adults aged 65 or older and living at home. The prevalence rate of CP in older adults was 25.8%. Most subjects with CP reported mild pruritus on 1-2 anatomical parts, especially the lower extremities. Overall, the five domains of CP were correlated with the seven components of sleep quality (r > .14; p > .05) except for sleep disturbance. The global itchy scores were significantly different between different sexes, educational attainments, and marital statuses (p<.05-.001). CP, sex, and the number of comorbid diseases significantly contributed to global sleep quality (β = .26, -.19, .15, respectively; .000 ≤ p ≤ .011). This study provides new insight into the correlations of CP with marital status and educational attainment.

A mini-flipped, game-based Mediterranean diet learning program on dietary behavior and cognitive function among community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan: A cluster-randomized controlled trial

The Mediterranean diet has been recommended to delay cognitive decline, but adherence to the diet among older adults remain poor, and research on interventions that effectively promote the diet has been inconclusive. This study examined the effects of a mini-flipped, game-based Mediterranean diet learning program in improving dietary behavior and cognitive function in community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan. A cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted. The experimental group completed an 8-week, mini-flipped, game-based learning program. Data were collected at baseline and 8 weeks after intervention. Outcome measures included dietary behavior, global cognitive function, and subjective cognitive dysfunction. Compared with the control group, the experimental group exhibited significantly improved Mediterranean diet behavior and global cognitive function after the intervention, although there was no significant difference in subjective cognitive function. Future research should be conducted with larger populations and longer-term follow-up to evaluate the effect of this learning program.

Physical Frailty and Oral Frailty Associated with Late-Life Depression in Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

Late-life depression is a major mental health problem and constitutes a heavy public health burden. Frailty, an aging-related syndrome, is reciprocally related to depressive symptoms. This study investigated the associations of physical frailty and oral frailty with depression in older adults. This large-scale cross-sectional study included 1100 community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan. The participants completed a dental examination and questionnaires answered during personal interviews. The 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale was used to assess depression, and information on physical conditions and oral conditions was collected. Multivariable logistical regression analysis was conducted to examine associations of interest. Significant factors associated with depression were pre-physical frailty (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 3.61), physical frailty (aOR = 53.74), sarcopenia (aOR = 4.25), insomnia (aOR = 2.56), pre-oral frailty (aOR = 2.56), oral frailty (aOR = 4.89), dysphagia (aOR = 2.85), and xerostomia (aOR = 1.10). Depression exerted a combined effect on physical frailty and oral frailty (aOR = 36.81). Physical frailty and oral frailty were significantly associated with late-life depression in community-dwelling older adults in a dose–response manner. Developing physical and oral function interventions to prevent depression among older adults is essential.

The Association between Bodily Pain and Cognitive Impairment in Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

Background: Bodily pain is a common condition in older adults and interferes with individuals’ cognitive functioning. We aimed to evaluate the association between bodily pain and related locations and cognitive impairment among community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan. Method: In this retrospective, cross-sectional study, we enrolled 2022 participants aged 60‒70 years, from the Taiwan Biobank. Mini-Mental State Examination was performed to assess cognitive impairment. Further, logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the relationship between bodily pain and cognitive impairment. Results: Overall, 161 participants had cognitive impairment. Multivariable analysis showed that older adults who reported bodily pain were more likely than those who did not have cognitive impairment (odds ratio 1.68). Moreover, the occurrence of cognitive impairment correlated with the presence of two or more pain locations and self-reported low back and waist pain or sciatica. Conclusion: Our study revealed that cognitive impairment was associated with bodily pain in community-dwelling older adults, particularly older adults with low back and waist pain or sciatica and those with two or more pain locations. To maintain the quality of older adults’ life, pain and cognitive decline need to be simultaneously assessed with considerably more precise and objective markers.
