Optimizing retention strategies for opioid use disorder pharmacotherapy: The retention phase of the CTN-0100 trial (RDD).

The three medications approved to address OUD are effective in decreasing opioid use and morbidity and mortality; however, their utility is limited by high rates of dropout from treatment. The CTN-0100 trial will develop an evidence base for strategies to improve retention on buprenorphine and extended-release naltrexone. The National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network (CTN) study CTN-0100, "Optimizing Retention, Duration and Discontinuation Strategies for Opioid Use Disorder Pharmacotherapy" (RDD), is a multicenter, randomized, non-blinded trial enrolling more than a thousand patients from 18 community-based substance use disorder treatment programs. Participants are adult volunteers seeking to initiate medication treatment for OUD (MOUD). Individuals choose between buprenorphine or extended-release injectable naltrexone. The trial randomizes participants choosing buprenorphine, in a 3 × 2 factorial design, to a medication condition (standard-dose sublingual buprenorphine, high-dose sublingual buprenorphine, or extended-release injectable buprenorphine) and to a behavioral condition (Medical Management or Medical Management plus a digital therapeutic (smartphone) app). Individuals choosing extended-release naltrexone are randomized only to a behavioral condition. Participants receive study medication for 74 weeks and are then followed for a further 24 weeks. The primary outcome is successful retention on MOUD at 26 weeks (six months), with 50- and 74-week retention among the secondary outcomes. Dropout from treatment is a major barrier to the effectiveness of MOUD. The CTN-0100 study will determine whether strategies such as high dose sublingual or extended-release buprenorphine, or an app-based behavioral intervention improve retention on MOUD. gov Identifier: NCT04464980.

Incidence and antecedents of emergent suicidal ideation and behavior among Veterans with serious mental illness receiving intensive case management.

Veterans with serious mental illness (SMI; i.e., schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, major mood disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder) are a high-risk group for suicide and little is known about those with emergent suicidal ideation and/or behavior. The primary study aim was to examine the six-month incidence and baseline antecedents of emergent suicidal ideation and/or behavior (suicidal ideation and/or behavior at six-month follow-up but not at enrollment) in Veterans with SMI enrolled in the Veterans Health Administration's (VHA) community-based treatment program (i.e., Intensive Community Mental Health Recovery [ICMHR]). A second, exploratory aim was to examine six-month follow-up ICMHR service use (e.g., frequency of contact with Veteran, type of services provided) in those with emergent suicidal ideation and/or behavior. National ICMHR program evaluation data from 2000 to 2013 were analyzed for Veterans with enrollment and six-month follow-up assessments (n=9921). Analyses examined differences in baseline characteristics and ICMHR service use in those with emergent suicidal ideation and/or behavior compared to those with other suicidal ideation and/or behavior patterns (i.e., none [at either timepoint], improved [present at enrollment but not at follow-up], persistent [present at both timepoints]). Results showed that 1.7% (n=167) of the sample had emergent suicidal ideation and/or behavior. Some suicidal ideation and/or behavior groups differed significantly from the emergent suicidal ideation and/or behavior group on odds of: lifetime hospitalizations, baseline subjective distress, affective disorder diagnosis, and baseline quality of life. Overall, historical and current clinical factors and quality of life should be assessed in this population given their association with emergent suicidal ideation and/or behavior.

The Effect of a Community-Based Complementary Feeding Education Program on the Nutritional Status of Infants in Polokwane Municipality, Limpopo Province, South Africa.

Appropriate complimentary feeding (CF) has the potential to improve growth and development in infants from 6 months to 2 years of age. This study's aim was to assess the effect of a CF education program on the nutritional status of infants aged 3-12 months in the Polokwane Municipality. A longitudinal (non-randomized), quasi-experimental intervention study was conducted among 187 caregivers. The caregiver-infant pairs (CIPs) in the intervention group (n = 95) received CF education and a six-month telephone follow-up support. The CIPs in the control group (n = 94) received no intervention. We collected data at baseline and end line using structured questionnaires. Intervention effectiveness was evaluated by comparing mean changes in anthropometric measurements between intervention and control groups using difference-in-difference analysis. Per protocol, analysis was run. The results show that the children in the intervention group gained more weight after the intervention, were taller, and the mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) increased more than in the control group. At baseline, the weight of infants was 7.37 ± 0.83 and 6.69 ± 0.13 kg in the intervention and control. At end line, significant weight and length gain were observed in the intervention group (difference-in-difference (DID) = 1.82 kg, p < 0.001) and (DID = 7.78 cm, p < 0.01), respectively. The intervention group showed significant gain in MUAC of 1.68 cm (p = 0.047), with no noticeable effect on the head circumference at end line; DID (0.16 cm; p = 0.950). Community-based nutrition intervention programs can effectively improve the anthropometric nutritional status of children aged 3-12 months.

Prevalence and associated risk factors of prostate cancer among a large Chinese population

Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most important health problems among elderly men in China, with the increasing aging of the population. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in eastern China from 2022 to 2023. Recruitment included a total of 70,342 participants aged 60 or older. Social demographic information, such as individual factors like age, education levels and behavior habits, physical examination and laboratory tests results were collected. Age-standardized prevalence rates were estimated by a direct method with a standard population. T test and chi-square test were used to compare the statistical differences. Multivariate regression models were used to identify the risk factors of PCa. Overall, the crude and age-standardized PCa prevalence is 0.93% and 0.91%, respectively in eastern China. When we adjusted all the co-variables, it showed that high age, smoking, having a higher BMI and higher CA19-9 were associated with a higher risk for a prostate cancer diagnosis. Faced with the demographic transition, innovative strategies are needed to control and prevent PCa. Conducting early screening among male population in community health service centers in eastern of China, especially among a population with associated risk factors such as high age, obesity, and conducting community-based intervention programs might be helpful to address this increasingly significant health problem.

Case study: lessons learned from a community-based early frailty intervention programme in Singapore.

Frailty is a dynamic and evolving state of health which involves the gradual loss of physiological in-built reserves. In Singapore, there is growing interest in delivering frailty intervention programmes at scale in the community to meet the demands of an ageing population. New methods of programme delivery such as community-led models that do not rely on healthcare professional manpower are critical to address this unmet need. In this paper, we describe our experience and some lessons learned from the implementation of a community-based early frailty intervention programme for older adults, delivered for the first time by trained laypersons. From August to September 2022, "Steady Lah," a community-based early frailty intervention programme with physical activity and nutrition-based elements, was conducted at an Active Ageing Centre in Singapore. A total of 23 participants with mean age of 73.8 years were enrolled in the 12-session programme comprising of progressive strength and balance-based exercises and workshop-based learning focusing on nutrition. In the implementation of this run of "Steady Lah," modifications were made from a healthcare professional-led model to a trained layperson-led model with additional steps taken to ensure participant safety and assess overall effectiveness when delivered by trained laypersons. Good collaboration between stakeholders in healthcare institutions and the community is necessary to co-develop a model that prioritises the needs of the frail older adults.

The influence of sociodemographic, tobacco use, and mental health characteristics on treatment adherence among adults enrolled in a community-based tobacco cessation program

BackgroundWhile counseling and pharmacological interventions are known to facilitate smoking cessation, poor adherence can impact their effectiveness. Therefore, this study aimed to identify personal and clinical factors that influenced adherence to smoking cessation treatment among socioeconomically disadvantaged adult Oklahomans enrolled in a publicly available tobacco treatment program and observational research study. MethodsAdult participants (N = 442) were enrolled in a community-based tobacco treatment program. Logistic regression models identified sociodemographic, mental health, and substance use characteristics associated with treatment adherence. Adherence was measured by counseling session attendance and weeks of moderate/high medication adherence assessed via the Medication Adherence Questionnaire. Analyses were conducted using SAS 9.4 with p < 0.05. ResultsParticipants (mean age of 53, 55 % female, and 42.3 % racially minoritized), smoked 16 (SD = 10) cigarettes/day for 30 years on average (SD = 15), and 44.8 % reported depression (Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale [CESD] score ≥ 10). Self-efficacy, White race, increasing age, and years of smoking were positively associated with counseling adherence, while menthol use, being uninsured, and depression predicted lower counseling adherence. Medication adherence was lower among individuals who used menthol cigarettes, lived with someone who smoked, and had higher levels of expired carbon monoxide. ConclusionsThis study highlights key factors that influenced adherence to smoking cessation treatment in a socioeconomically disadvantaged population. Tailored interventions are needed to address social, behavioral, and environmental factors, such as living situations and mental health, in smoking cessation interventions to enhance treatment outcomes for underserved populations. Future tobacco cessation programs should consider these factors to improve adherence and, ultimately, success rates.

This study aims to identify the issues and causes of drug abuse through a community-based intervention program. The research employs a qualitative, descriptive approach. Informants were selected using a purposive sampling technique, targeting the administrators of Cawang Subdistrict, East Jakarta, as program implementers, and the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) as the government institution responsible for overseeing program execution in the field. The findings indicate that the community-based intervention program in Cawang Subdistrict addresses drug abuse through a series of activities, each with its own specific function, implemented progressively and continuously. There are six key implementation programs: socialization, mapping, outreach, early assessment, rehabilitation recommendations, and monitoring and recovery.

Motor development trajectories of children with cerebral palsy in a community-based early intervention program in rural South India

BackgroundDevelopmental trajectories are crucial for evidence-based prognostication, planning interventions, and monitoring progress in children with cerebral palsy (CP). AimsTo describe gross motor development patterns of children with CP in rural South India for the five Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels. MethodsLongitudinal cohort study of 302 children (176 males, 126 females) with CP aged 0 to 10 years, followed by a community-based early intervention program. GMFCS levels were 5.4 % level 1, 16.5 % level II, 22.8 % level III, 26.8 % level IV, and 28.5 % level V. Assessments were undertaken using the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM-66) at 6-month intervals between April 2017 and August 2020. Longitudinal analyses were performed using mixed-effects linear regression models. Outcomes and resultsFive distinct motor development curves were created for ages 0 to 10 years by GMFCS levels as a function of age and GMFM-66 with a stable limit model, variation in estimated limits and rates of development. Conclusions and ImplicationsMotor development trajectories for CP in an LMIC differ from those reported in HICs. Consideration of how social determinants of health, environmental and personal factors impact motor development in low-resource contexts is crucial. Further work is needed to describe developmental trajectories of children for CP in LMICs.

Abstract A124: An examination of trust in biomedical research among the Witness Project’s community health workers

Abstract The Witness Project® (NWP) was established in 1991 and has maintained its status as one of NCI’s Evidence Based Cancer Control Program (EBCCP) for decades. NWP is a self-sustaining, culturally competent, grass roots level community-based intervention program that uses breast and cervical cancer survivors known as Witness Role Models and Community Health Workers (CHW). With many locations in unserved communities throughout the United States, NWP provides relevant cancer related education and navigates minority residents through successful completions of cancer related screenings. Health disparities are a longstanding problem due in part to underrepresentations of historically underserved populations in research. Increasing minority and underserved individuals’ participation in research has great disparity mitigating potential. A team of newly trained Black and Hispanic NWP CHW (n=25) will be created as part of a larger multiphase preliminary pilot study designed to increase diverse individuals’ participations in research within Roswell Park’s catchment area. Design, Measures, Setting, and Participants. The primary objective of this cross-sectional study is to assess Black and Hispanic CHW’s trust in biomedical research. Secondary objectives are to explore the feasibility and acceptability of 1) NWP CHW training, and 2) an informal educational intervention about the importance of minority representations in research and it potential to mitigate health disparities. CMWs will complete the Perceptions of Research Trustworthiness (PoRT) scale to evaluate their trust and distrust in biomedical research before and after viewing the informal educational intervention. Preliminary Results and Planned Analyses At the time of abstract submission nineteen CMWs have completed their NWP and CITI training and PoRT assessments. Fifteen CHWs were Black (78.9%) and four Hispanic (21.1%). When all 25 CMWs are trained we will calculate overall and individual item Trust and Distrust subscale scores. Regarding feasibility and acceptability of the CHW training and the informal education intervention, semi structured interviews will provide qualitative feedback and independent samples t-test will be used to compare pre-and post-informal education intervention PoRT scores. A hospital and community-based violence intervention program for Black & Latino youth and their caregivers.

Black and Latino youth are disproportionately affected by trauma from community violence, but to date, few data support the benefit of evidence-based treatments for these youth or of including peer support to engage these youth in mental health services. From 2018 until 2020, a hospital and community-based violence intervention program in Philadelphia pilot tested the integration of home and community-based Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) with peer services and case management for youth impacted by community violence. This study describes the implementation of this intervention. Data was gathered by querying the program's database. The Child Post Traumatic Stress Symptom Severity Scale (CPSS-SR-5) and the Short Mood and Feelings Questionnaire (SMFQ) were utilized to evaluate the participants' pre- and post-intervention assessment of PTSD and depression. The sample (N = 50) consisted of Black and Latino youth, mean age 14. Twenty-nine (58%) completed TF-CBT, and 82% met peer and case management goals. Youth who completed therapy showed significant improvement in both PTSD and depression symptoms at post-test. To our knowledge, this is the first study describing the implementation of home and community-based TF-CBT with peer support and case management. The study's limitations and need for further research are discussed.

Glycemic status and effect on mortality: Multifactorial prevention programme for cardiovascular disease in Finnish primary care

AimsTo compare 13-year mortality rates in normoglycemic, prediabetic and diabetic subjects attending a community-based screening and intervention programme. MethodsPopulation survey identified 2569 cardiovascular disease (CVD) white risk subjects aged 45–70 years and without manifested CVD or diabetes. Oral glucose tolerance test was performed, and multifactorial intervention was provided. Effect of glycemic status on mortality was estimated in models adjusted for age, gender, education years, smoking, body mass index, mean arterial pressure, total cholesterol, and physical activity. ResultsOf the subjects, 2055 (77 %) were normoglycemic, 380 (14 %) had prediabetes and 224 (9 %) diabetes. Compared to the normoglycemic group, the fully adjusted hazard ratios (HR) for all-cause mortality were 1.34 (95 % CI: 0.98–1.83) in the prediabetes group and 2.31 (95 % CI: 1.62–3.31) in the diabetes group. Standardized mortality rates were 0.63 (95 % CI: 0.54–0.73), 0.91 (95 % CI: 0.69–1.18), and 1.55 (95 % CI: 1.19–2.02) in the normoglycemic, prediabetes, and diabetes groups, respectively. The most common cause of death was cancer (42 % of all deaths), followed by CVD (28 %). Conclusions/interpretationScreen-detected diabetes carries a substantial risk of death even after primary care intervention. The pattern of excess mortality has shifted towards cancer deaths.

Integrating point-of-care diabetes detection with lifestyle counselling in community settings: outcomes from Western Sydney, Australia

IntroductionEarly detection and prevention of type 2 diabetes and its complications are global health priorities. Optimal outcomes depend on individual awareness and proactive self-management of health risks. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a community-based diabetes detection and intervention program in a high-risk area in western Sydney, Australia.Research design and methodsWe collaborated with the Workers Lifestyle Group, Tamil Association Arts and Culture Association, and the National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee to implement our program. Participants underwent HbA1C testing via point-of-care blood spot testing. They received personalized feedback, education on diabetes management, and were offered opportunities to enrol in lifestyle modification programs. Participants identified with pre-diabetes (HbA1C 5.7–6.4%) or diabetes (HbA1C > 6.4%) were advised to consult their General Practitioners (GPs). A follow-up questionnaire was distributed 3–8 months post-intervention to evaluate the programs usefulness and relevance and lifestyle changes implemented by the participants.ResultsOver eight months, 510 individuals participated. Of these, 19% had an HbA1C > 6.4%, and 38% had levels between 5.7 and 6.4%. Among those with diabetes, HbA1C levels ranged as follows: 56% <7%; 20% 7-7.9%; 18% 8-8.9%; and 5% >9%. Post intervention survey indicated that the program was well-received, with 62.5% of responses reporting lifestyle changes and 36.3% seeking further advice from their local healthcare providers.ConclusionThe study demonstrates a significant prevalence of pre-diabetes and diabetes in the community, similar to findings from larger-scale hospital and general practice studies. Point-of-care testing combined with personalized education effectively motivated participants toward healthier lifestyle choices and medical consultations. The paper discusses the scalability of this approach for broader population.

Vulnerability of elderly people during climate-induced disasters in Sub-Saharan Africa: a scoping review

Climate-induced disasters present significant challenges to vulnerable populations, especially elderly individuals with disabilities who face unique difficulties in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from such catastrophic events. Despite growing concerns about the impact of climate-induced disasters in sub-Saharan Africa, there is a notable lack of information regarding the specific vulnerabilities experienced by elderly people with disabilities in this region. This study aims to address this gap by identifying and synthesizing the existing literature on the subject. Researchers conducted a scoping review, selecting articles from regional (Sabinet African Journals, Science Direct) and global databases (PubMed, PsycINFO, and ProQuest) using search strategies with Boolean operators, truncations, and MeSH terms. The review included primary studies (qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods) published between 2013 and 2023 that met specified inclusion and exclusion criteria, with a focus on assessing the quality of the included studies. The findings revealed that elderly people in sub-Saharan Africa face significant physical, cognitive, and socio-economic challenges due to limited access to resources, inadequate infrastructure, and social exclusion. These challenges are amplified in the sub-Saharan context, highlighting a critical gap in inclusive risk reduction strategies during disasters. The review emphasizes an urgent need for targeted research and the development of community-based intervention programmes to improve the resilience and wellbeing of elderly individuals with disabilities facing climate-induced disasters. This study not only mapped the existing literature but also underscored the scarcity of research in the field of climate-induced disasters, with only six articles focusing on the elderly. The researchers recommend the development of more inclusive disaster risk reduction strategies and policies.

A Tailored Virtual Program for Alcohol Use Disorder Treatment Among Liver Transplant Candidates and Recipients Is Feasible and Associated With Lower Post-Transplant Relapse.

Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is a leading indication for liver transplant (LT) in the United States. Rates of early liver transplant (ELT) with less than 6 months of sobriety have increased substantially. Patients who receive ELT commonly have alcohol-associated hepatitis (AH) and are often too ill to complete an intensive outpatient program (IOP) for alcohol use disorder (AUD) prior to LT. ELT recipients feel alienated from traditional IOPs. We implemented Total Recovery-LT, a tailored virtual outpatient IOP specific for patients under evaluation or waitlisted for LT who were too ill to attend community-based alcohol treatment programs. The 12-week program consisted of weekly group and individual counseling delivered by a master's level Certified Addiction Counselor trained in the basics of LT.Treatment consisted of 12-Step Facilitation, Motivational Interviewing, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. We report on program design, implementation, feasibility and early outcomes. From March 2021 to September 2022, 42 patients (36% female, 23 in LT evaluation, 19 post-transplant) enrolled across five cohorts with 76% (32/42) completing the program. Alcohol relapse was more common among noncompleters versus those who completed the program (8/10, 80%vs. 7/32, 22%, p = 0.002). History of trauma or post-traumatic stress symptoms were associated with lower likelihood of completion. Patients' desire for continued engagement after completion led to the creation of a monthly alumni group. Our integrated IOP model for patients with high-risk AUD in LT evaluation or post-transplant is well-received by patients and could be considered a model for LT programs.

Factors affecting continuous participation in follow-up evaluations during a lifestyle intervention programme for type 2 diabetes prevention: The Feel4Diabetes-study.

Community- and school-based lifestyle interventions are an efficient method of preventing type 2 diabetes in vulnerable populations. Many participants, however, fail to complete the necessary follow-ups. We investigated factors affecting the continuous participation in follow-up evaluations during the Feel4Diabetes-study, a multilevel intervention programme implemented across Europe. Socioeconomic, sociodemographic and clinical factors were assessed for 2702 participants within six participating countries: Bulgaria and Hungary (low-to-middle-income countries, LMIC), Belgium and Finland (high-income countries, HIC) and Greece and Spain (high-income countries under austerity measures, HICAM). Statistically significant differences were detected with respect to sex, control group, education level, employment status, BMI and blood pressure measurements (systolic and diastolic blood pressure). Post hoc analysis revealed significant differences within socioeconomic regions. Higher levels of education were associated with significantly lower attrition in HIC (p < 0.05) and HICAM (p < 0.001), higher employment status was associated with lower attrition in HICAM (p < 0.001) and being female was associated with lower attrition in LMIC (p < 0.001). Surprisingly, the intervention group exhibited higher-than-expected attrition in HIC (p < 0.001) and HICAM (p = 0.003), and lower attrition in LMIC (p = 0.007). When tested together in the same multivariable predictive model, all sociodemographic and socioeconomic variables along with higher BMI retained their statistical significance, while systolic and diastolic blood pressure failed to remain significant. Key socioeconomic and sociodemographic factors along with BMI play a significant role in determining continuous participation in follow-up evaluations during school- and community-based intervention programmes.

Addressing Mental Health Issues among Senior High School Students in Island Garden City of Samal: A Community-Based Intervention Program

Addressing mental health issues among high school students is an important topic, as it plays a significant role in their overall well-being and academic success. Research studies often focus on developing intervention programs to support students’ mental health needs. These programs may involve community-based approaches that aim to engage various stakeholders in promoting mental health and well-being. The action research titled “Addressing Mental Health Issues among Senior High School Students in the Island Garden City of Samal: A Community-Based Intervention Program” aims to investigate and develop an intervention program to tackle mental health issues among senior high school students in the Island Garden City of Samal. Mental health problems among adolescents have become a growing concern globally, and it is crucial to address these issues during the formative years of individuals’ lives.

Social capital of families of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities in South India.

To investigate the social capital of families with children with neurodevelopmental disabilities in South India receiving a community-based early intervention (Enabling Inclusion®) program and to explore determinants and associations between social capital and program duration, socio-demographic factors, family empowerment, and caregiver burden. Using purposive sampling in a cross-sectional study design, 217 families (n = 71 received short Enabling Inclusion [<5 months]; n = 146 received long Enabling Inclusion [>9 months]) were recruited and completed the Short Adapted Social Capital Tool (SASCAT: cognitive, structural), measures of family empowerment, and caregiver strain. Descriptive statistics, regression, and correlations were used for analyses. In 52.1% of participants, low cognitive and structural social capital was observed. Higher odds of low structural social capital were observed for mothers with primary versus secondary education (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 0.35; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.13-0.90; p = 0.029); and caregivers of children with cerebral palsy versus autism (OR = 4.66; 95% CI 1.02-21.21; p = 0.046). Significant associations were found between structural social capital, the child's age, and support group membership (χ2 = 6.29; 4.70; degrees of freedom [df] = 2; 1; p = 0.04; p = 0.02 respectively), as well as between cognitive social capital and other disability in the family (χ2 = 4.62, df = 1, p = 0.03). While program duration was not found to mediate social capital, mother's education and child's diagnosis emerged as key influential factors, warranting their consideration in interventions supporting families of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities in low- and-middle-income countries and elsewhere.

School context can shape relative intervention response in myriad ways due to factors, such as instructional quality, resource allocation, peer effects, and correlations between the school context and characteristics of enrolled students (e.g., higher-poverty students attending higher-poverty schools). In the current study, we used data from 16,000 U.S. Grade 3 students in a community-based supplemental reading intervention program to investigate the degree to which school context factors (percentage eligible for free/reduced-price lunch [FRPL], school-level achievement) relate to the differences in triannual reading fluency growth rates between students actively receiving supplemental intervention (active recipients) and those that formerly received intervention (and therefore only received general class instruction at this time; former recipients). Using Bayesian multilevel modeling, our findings indicate that school-level FRPL eligibility played a more prominent factor in growth rate differences between these two groups than school-level reading achievement. However, school-level reading achievement was much more strongly related to reading fluency differences between active and former intervention recipients at the beginning of the school year (when controlling for FRPL). Implications for investigating school-level heterogeneity in intervention response and sustainability are discussed.

Psychometric Validation of the Domestic Violence Questionnaire in Swahili Among Congolese Female Survivors of Domestic Violence

The Domestic Violence Questionnaire (DVQ) is a measure that captures physical, sexual, economic, and psychological violence perpetrated against women. A team of local academicians and intervention experts evaluated several tools for domestic and gender-based violence, concluding that the DVQ fitted best in the context of evaluating the Living Peace intervention in conflict-affected eastern DRC. The purpose of this validation study was to: (1) validate the factor structure of the Swahili version of the DVQ, (2) to evaluate its convergent and divergent validity, and (3) to examine its internal consistency reliability. The factor structure was evaluated using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) while concurrent validity and internal consistency reliability were evaluated using Pearson correlation and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients, respectively. The study participants were women, partners of men that participated in the Living Peace program, a community-based intervention program that works on promoting positive masculinity among men that are perceived to be violent by their community. Data were obtained from two independent purposive samples of 704 participants for EFA and 878 participants for CFA, selected from 60 villages in North and South Kivu, DRC. The results indicated that five and three-factor structures could be meaningfully interpreted in EFA, each with 66% explained variance. For comparative purposes, CFA was conducted on the two newly created factor models and the original factor model. All models reach good fit indexes, with the three-factor model demonstrating the best fit. Its standardized factor loadings ranged from 0.57 to 0.91. The internal consistency was α = .90 for the total scale and ranged from α = .75 to .926 per dimension. Finally, scores of DVQ were negatively correlated with mental well-being ( r = −0.23, p &lt; .001), and positively with depression ( r = .435, p &lt; .001), as hypothesized. The Swahili version of DVQ has excellent psychometric properties and can be applied to evaluate the physical, sexual, economic and psychological violence in victims of domestic violence in humanitarian crisis settings.
