The Impact of Tourism Development on the Local Communities in Namibia

This article aims to identify and explain the current challenges being faced due to the impact of tourism development on the local communities in Namibia. The State touts Tourism’s socio-cultural benefits through its respective line ministries as highly significant towards the development and economic growth, as articulated in the current National Development Plan (NDP5). ”… The tourism industry is an important contributor to the generation of foreign exchange earnings, investments, revenue, employment, rural development, poverty reduction, and the growth of the country’s economy. Tourism also creates substantial direct and peripheral benefits because of its multiplier effect, based on its reliance on widespread supplies and services” ((NPC), 2017). The Foreign-exchange earnings and balance of payment benefits derived from tourism receipts are considered a double-edged sword. The money spent by tourists in the Namibian economy is significant. Tourism can have both negative and positive impacts on the local community. This desk research found an appalling concern for many developing countries to over-depend on tourism to pursue economic growth and development. It is argued that this serves as a demonstration of how tourism development elevates the prices related to real estate and general costs of goods and services, which eventually leads to inflation. Finally, we assume that self-efficacy positively influences the involvement of local communities in tourism development which has positive implications on their quality of life regarding social and economic bearings. Additionally, local communities should be more supportive and instead have a positive attitude towards tourism development, thus resulting in a more profitable tourism sector. In concluding, the authors viewed that the government should also ensure that the local people are well informed about the importance of tourism, how it impacts economic development and the realization of a sustainable tourism strategy for Namibia.

Factors Influencing Economic Empowerment in Tourism Development

Tourism is believed to be able to empower people economically, both at the individual and community levels, by providing various employment and business opportunities to community members to help alleviate poverty. This study offers insights into community empowerment outcome, particularly in economic dimension, through a quantitative approach. This study aims to identify the level of community empowerment outcome perceived by the local communities in tourism development in their area and analyze the factors that influence the outcome. Employing a mixed-methods approach, this study collected data through household survey, field and participatory observation, and document analysis. The questionnaire responses were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis (i.e., frequency distribution and cross tabulation) and chi-square analysis. The findings suggest that tourism was able to increase the income of the people working in the tourism sector. However, only several people perceived that tourism could provide benefits for them. Several factors influencing the community perception related to economic empowerment in tourism development were identified. These include involvement in the tourism industry, community culture (kinship), nature of tourism affecting the type of available job, lack of engagement, lack of capital, education, and geographical factors.

Development of Community Tourism Services in Ha Giang Province

Ha, Giang has become an increasingly attractive destination for both domestic and foreign tourists, thanks to its unique natural and social conditions. In particular, community-based tourism is the highlight of the province's tourism when there is a connection of indigenous people to develop tourism. In order for community-based tourism to really develop, tourism services need to be focused on improving quality and diversifying in order to make a difference and retain visitors. The article finds that Ha Giang's tourism products are quite rich but have not yet created specific features and are copied, so they have not increased the spending level of tourists coming to Ha Giang's community-based tourism. Therefore, the group suggested a number of solutions such as: Organizing to upgrade and expand community-based tourism activities, Strengthen and improve the effectiveness of state management of tourism, promote the participation of the local communities in tourism development…Hopefully, these changes will help improve the quality of tourism services and satisfy visitors to Ha Giang.

Local community’s perception on the existing home stay program in Terai and Hilly districts of Nepal

Homestay tourism program is a new part of tourism sector which involved local community in tourism development within their own and surrounding area. It is also lately emerging tourism concept in the world. Nepal is known as an important tourist’s destination and can be a model homestay country with its abundant natural resources, multi culture, multi religion, multi ethnic, tradition life style, archeological heritage, innocent society and community. Due to all these above factors homestay tourism program became the dream for the lover of nature and experts of tourism in Nepal. Homestay program can be easily established, Promoted and developed by minimum investment and based on many aspects such as good service, safety, security, souvenir, family and attractions. It is a major tourism industry for the development of rural economy by generating huge number of employment and social benefits. The major objective of the study is the perception of community towards homestay tourism program. Descriptive and exploratory research design, cross-sectional study design and deductive approach with mixed method have been used in this study. Both primary and secondary data are used simultaneously. Primary data are collected from 348 respondents with three categories of nine study Districts. Similarly, secondary data are collected from various publications of central, state, local Governments, different articles in international journals, books, credible magazines, newspaper, reports prepared by research scholars, experts and universities and different websites etc. Finally, majority of community people have a positive perception towards on existing homestay program in Nepal.

The Role of the Local Host Community’s Involvement in the Development of Tourism: A Case Study of the Residents’ Perceptions toward Tourism on the Route of Santiago de Compostela (Spain)

As an economic, social, and cultural activity, tourism shapes the relationship between visitors and local communities in tourist destinations. While tourism generates economic growth and employment opportunities for residents, its benefits come with a social cost. This article highlights the results of an online survey that was carried out at the beginning of 2021 in the seven major Galician cities along the Route of Santiago de Compostela (the Way of St. James) in Spain, which is a historical, natural, and cultural tourist attraction that is inscribed in the UNESCO’s World Heritage List in the category of cultural assets. The goal of the research work was to get to know first-hand the opinion of local communities about the positive and negative effects of tourism in their cities, on the Route of Santiago, and in the region of Galicia as a whole. Research work shows that residents’ perception of tourism leans toward the positive side, although it also reveals the need for tourism planners to involve host communities in tourism development. This research study about a World Heritage site should prove useful for political decision makers, tourism planners, and experts, both in Galicia and elsewhere.

Community-Based Tourism in Kresek Village, Madiun, East Java

Purpose: This research aims to reveal the role of community in tourism development and formulate community-based tourism in historical tourism areas of Kresek Monument in Kresek Village, Wungu District, Madiun Regency, East Java. Research methods: This research is carried out with a qualitative explorative method. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, observations, Focus Group Discussions, and the study of documentation. Data validity was obtained through source triangulation. Data analysis with interactive analysis model. Results and discussions: The result shows that the people succeeded to transform historical trauma into tourism potential through various recreational and educational activities, but the absence of synergy of policies among the stakeholders becomes a hindrance in developing the historical tourism area. Through a series of Focus Group Discussions, the model of Community-Based Tourism (CBT) was formulated for the empowerment of people in developing tourism in the historical tourism areas in Kresek Village. The community is actively involved in the selection, planning, and evaluation the tourism development. These models can be implemented in rural tourism development. The result of implementation models can contribute to the improvement of the economy and standards of living in the local community, the sustainability of tourism, and environmental conservation. Conclusion: The result of the implementation model can contribute to the improvement of economic standards of living in the local community, the sustainability of tourism, and environmental conservation.

Tourism Development and the Local Businesses in Amritsar

Introduction. Taking into consideration the possibilities of growth and returns the tourism sector provides to the state of Punjab, of recent the Government of Punjab and the Amritsar city administration have made huge effort in expanding this sector by tapping and promoting various sites and activities for tourist absorption. This study delivers reasons for tourism development in Amritsar and proposes possible information for stakeholders to ensure the suitable tourism planning and management, especially contributing towards the local community. Materials and Methods. Prominent categories of business operators i.e., restaurant owners, traditional shopkeepers, employees from the hospitality sector which included hotels, guest houses, hostels and lastly travel agency owners were interviewed for this study. This sample of 120 respondents was drawn from the inner and outer city areas of Amritsar city of Punjab (India). Results. Tourism is emerging as a ‘saviour economy’ for Amritsar, as a major part of Amritsar’s economy directly and indirectly is dependent on this sector. Business community in Amritsar largely perceives the impacts of tourism development positively. However, respondents felt that the business in Amritsar is also getting negatively affected due to mono–centric development, overflow of tourists and expansionist tourism-centric policies. Tourism development policy can perform better by taking local economies into consideration and increasing participation of local communities in tourism development. This way tourism can create an undeniably positive impact on local communities and local businesses. Discussion and Conclusion. As the current development model of the city is tourism centric, there is an insufficiency in growth of allied sectors as well as in development programmes and a miscoordination is there between different significant stakeholders. This study will be useful to various stakeholders like development authorities, planners, and scholars etc who are interested in addressing the developmental issues being faced by tourist cities. The usefulness of this study lies in the fact that it demonstrates how tourism can be used as a tool for regional development by gaining resident support.

LOCAL RESIDENTS’ ATTITUDES TOWARDS CYCLING TOURISM IN THE UPPER DANUBE REGION (SERBIA)

Cycling tourism is an important and growing niche tourism market in Europe. It can contribute to the sustainable development and branding of the tourist destination, the preservation of natural and cultural heritage, the development of other forms of tourism, the creation of the tourist offers and active inclusion of the local community in development of tourism. Cycling tourism is recognized in the strategic documents of the Republic of Serbia as one of the key tourist products that should be developed in the selected tourist destinations. As local community has an important role in tourism development, in this paper, TIAS scale (Tourism Impact Attitude Scale) was used to examine the local residents’ attitudes towards cycling tourism in the selected municipalities in the Upper Danube region through which Danube cycle route passes. It is the longest cycling corridor in Serbia, rich in natural and cultural heritage elements along its course, which is also part of one of the most popular European cycling routes, the EuroVelo 6. In addition, the effects of certain demographic variables on the residents’ attitudes were examined. The results of the research indicate that cycling tourism is in the initial phase of tourism development in the studied area, and that local residents are aware of its possible positive impacts, therefore providing support for cycling tourism development. The results will be most valuable in assisting local governments, destination management organizations, tourism policy creators and tourism practitioners to understand the local residents’ attitudes towards cycling tourism and to formulate strategies to effectively manage sustainable tourism development.

Pengembangan Wisata Religi Makam Gus Dur di Kabupaten Jombang Pendekatan: Community Based Tourism

Religious Tourism Development of Gus Dur Sanctuary in Jombang Regency: Community Based Tourism Approach
 Community based tourism is the concept of tourism development by involving the people or community in its activities and management. This study aims to determine priority factors that may affect community based tourism and development strategy of Gus Dur sanctuary religious tourism in Jombang Regency. The analytical method used in this case is Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats (SWOT) analysis. Based on the results of AHP analysis, it was found that the activity of the organization or society groups (0.382), increased cooperation government and society (0.269), the addition of facilities and infrastructure (0.182), and manufacture of regulation (0.167), factor activity of organizations/communities are considered most important in determining the priority development of religious tourism of Gus Dur sanctuary. The results SWOT analysis obtained, six development strategies, namely to involve the local community in tourism development and empowerment activities, to facilitate the development of business/industry through microcredits that can support people’s economy, to optimize the role of the government to increase the planned development targets, to facilitate development of home business/industry through courses and training institutions, improve cooperation with private sector to support tourism development, and improve cooperation between community and government or private sector in developing local economy.

ROLE OF EXTERNAL STAKEHOLDERS IN TOURISM DEVELOPMENT AND COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT

Purpose: This paper explores the external stakeholder role in empowering the local community in tourism development. The objectives are examined through Namo Sialang village communities, a case study that purposefully selected to represent communities where tourism was developed in a bottom-up approach, which is a good start for community empowerment
 Research methods: The approach used is an in-depth interview with stakeholders that involved in tourism development in the village.
 Results and discussions: The finding indicated that stakeholder activities more likely to create ‘power over' within the community, which is an unexpected outcome for community empowerment. It is because their activities are focused only on certain community group (e.g., tourism industry member, tourism organization member) and have not considered the wider community. The material was given also more likely focused on tourist needs, and not for what community needs.
 Conclusion: In essence, the stakeholders involved in tourism development in the village have not applied an empowering approach for the community

PARTISIPASI MASYARAKAT LOKAL DALAM PENGEMBANGAN PARIWISATA DI TAMAN NASIONAL KARIMUNJAWA

This article specifically discusses the participation of local communities in tourism development in Karimunjawa National Park, which is administratively a part of Jepara Regency, Central Java Province. This research uses a qualitative approach, the research findings show that the participation of local communities in Karimunjawa is realized through the formation of the Tourism Local Transportation Association, the Lodging Association, the Tourism Ship Association, the Culinary Association, and the Tour Guides Association which are members of the Indonesian Tour Guides Association. also encouraged to offer local Karimunjawa superior products in the form of food, beverages, and handicraft products to tourists visiting Karimunjawa to support the economic development and empowerment of the Karimunjawa community.

The Muarajambi area is a national cultural preserve with an area of 3,981 hectares covering 9 villages in 2 sub-districts. This area has quite promising tourism potential. Tourism activities in the Muarajambi Temple area are centered in Muara Jambi Village. This is due to the fact that most of the restored temples are in this area. around the main temple complex. The development of tourism is pursued by the community by forming associations and organizations, so that it can help in developing tourism in the Muarajambi Temple area. Community participation in developing tourism in the Muarajambi Temple Area is mostly done through tourism conscious groups; in general community participation is influenced by two factors. The first factor is an internal factor, internal factors that influence the Group includes a strong desire of the community to participate, a sense of concern for Group members towards the younger generation, the age of the members involved in these groups are in the productive age, and the level of education of the management also influences their participation under construction. The second factor is an external factor, an external factor that influences community participation in tourism development in the Muara Jambi village, including the large support from the government regarding community involvement in activities that support tourism. However, the role of the Muaro Jambi Regency Government which has full authority over the development of this region has not yet had an influence in the process of developing the Muarajambi Temple Area.

COMMUNITY TOURISM - PROMOTING CULTURAL STRENGTH, STABILIZING LIFE

Community tourism is now an attractive type, thriving globally and bringing many benefits to the local community, contributing to poverty reduction. In Vietnam, community tourism is also expected to be one of the advantages to bring tourism into the spearhead economy. Therefore, the Tourist Law of 2017 has reserved 1 Article (Article 19) on community-based tourism in which The State will facilitate the participation of local communities intourism development. This will be conditions for the development of community-based tourism, not only promote the strength of local culture, but also contribute to stabilize people’s lives.

Potencjał społeczności lokalnych w rozwoju turystyki Żuławek

The aim of this article is to identify the potential of local communities in tourism development in the countryside. The exemplification of the discussion is the creation of rural tourism development in the village called Żulawki in Stegna commune. The village has landscape and natural values and a convenient spatial location. However, the authors wish to draw particular attention to the process of self-activation observed among the influx community for sustainable development of the village. It is possible owing to the emerging features of the potential of this community: mutual integration, commitment, problem solving orientation and access to resources. The subjectivity of the characterised community manifested itself in the ability to adapt and identify with the new place of residence and its problems, drive to articulate one's own vision of rural development, and activation of the environment for the implementation of established plans. The text is based on the results of a study conducted in 2015 by means of participatory observation techniques and free-form interviews with local activists.

Local Communities in Tourism Development of Rural Area, A Case Study of Two Local Tourism Initiatives in Wanayasa, Purwakarta

This paper describes the challenges in the rural tourism development based on local participation. The rural tourism based on local participation has been identified as ideal model that will uplifting local economy without had significant impacted to their “nature” way of life. However, based on the research on two local groups who are managing the tourism in Wanayasa, we found out that there are challenges in developing the tourism based on local participation. Despite of each groups have differences characteristic in tourism management practice, there are some similarity challenges. Each of groups has facing the external and internal challenges. It shows us that the rural tourism development is the complex process. Furthermore, the integrative model which is including various stakeholders would be an alternative model to optimize the rural tourism development, especially in sustainable tourism. Destination Branding Identity from the Stakeholders’ Perspectives

In order to establish a strong destination branding, understanding the process of image in positioning the destination is crucial. Arguably, a brand identity for a tourist destination that makes up a name is often captured from the user point of view. However, little was understood as to how the stakeholders perceived image-making, and later, the branding of destination and their influence. In this context, brand identity through projection of Destination Management Organizations (DMOs), significantly contribute towards existing image. In other words, they are forcing the creation of branding using the vision of how the market and segmentation should perceive a brand. The question that may rise is how this branding process is truly acting as a catalyst of a production towards desirable destination. This paper addresses the following issues; (1) Stakeholders’ involvement particularly local community in tourism development and planning (2) previous studies in destination branding (3) the relationships between destination identity and destination brand. This paper also highlights the existing gaps in understanding destination identity from the stakeholders’ perspectives to the branding strategy. It also suggests the future studies.

Role of local community in tourism development: Case study village Zabrega

Studies and researches on the role of a local community in tourism development of rural areas emphasize the significance of inhabitants? attitudes about the state and perspectives of this activity. In this context, in the professional literature, the term CBT (community-based tourism) is used, which implies the involvement of local communities and planning of tourism development. The aim of the study is to determine the local population?s influence on starting an initiative for a tourist arranging of the village Zabrega in the Municipality of Paracin, especially the sacral objects in the Crnica River Gorge. The following methods were applied: method of direct observation, analysis, synthesis, interview and survey in which the questions were of a closed and open type. Results of the research survey were analyzed in the software package for statistical processing and analysis of the data SPSS 20.00. It has been stated that the population has a positive attitude about the Society Petrus, which is the main organizer of the activities when the prosperity of the village Zabrega is in question, and that the local community is interested in engaging in the tourist activities, as demonstrated by numerous practical examples.
