In the period of transition from socialism to communism, the inculcation of labor activism and independence in each individual is an urgent task confronting society. This demand has been reflected in the decision of the Twenty-Fifth Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union [CPSU] [1971], and in subsequent decrees the Communist Party Central Committee and the USSR Council of Ministers outlined a comprehensive program for the development and improvement of public education. At the present time, highly favorable conditions are being created for comprehensive realization of the task of securing the harmonious development of the individual. Inevitably, the role of the social and educational functions of the school, the organizing center of the communist education of the younger generation, has increased. The contemporary Soviet school is mobilizing the entire reserve of methodological, didactic, and instructional resources at its disposal and is gradually perfecting it.
