FAMILY STORIES IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF DISCOURSE

Introduction: the last decades are characterized by a rising tide of interest of Russian citizens for the history of their families. The main form of its existence are family stories - both about the present of the family and its subjects, and about their past. These stories become natural part of our communicative space, no matter which type of activity and what social roles we are involved in. Materials and methods: the study was conducted on the material of texts - both oral and written, - containing information about addresser’s family. The main methods included the method of communicative behavior observation, the method of studying the forms and types of representation of family stories in different types of conversation, the method of analyzing and the method of generalization. Results: the purpose of this article was to analyze various types of discourse in order to identify the presence/absence of family stories in each of them, and to determine the role of such stories in various spheres of our life. Having considered interpersonal and several types of institutional discourse (scientific, popular scientific, political, medical, pedagogical and advertising), we examined how each of them presents family stories, for what purpose subjects use this kind of stories in each of the analyzed types of discourse and which aspects of family history are most relevant in each case. As a result of the study, it was determined that family stories play a significant role in our communication in each of the analyzed types of discourse, but in each of them they are used with a specific purpose. Discussion and conclusion: if we consider everything we know about our family as a family history (that consists of many separate, private family stories), then we can conclude that it flows into all spheres of our life. Our family history is penetrated by different types of discourse in which we participate, and, being included in our communication, is preserved in it.

Global developmental abilities of cochlear implanted children with spastic cerebral palsy: two experimental groups.

To analyze gross motor, fine motor-adaptive, language, social function performance, and communicative behaviors among cochlear-implanted children with spastic cerebral palsy (CP) and children with CP without hearing loss (HL) and to compare them with children with normal development. Prospective cross-sectional study involving 12 children with mean age of 63 months, distributed into two experimental groups: G1-4 children with CP and cochlear implant (CI) users and G2-4 children with CP without HL. A third group (G3) was the control group with four typically developing children. In the experimental groups, six children were classified in level II and two in level IV, using the Gross Motor Function Classification System. We used the Denver Developmental Screening Test II and the Communicative Behavior Observation (CBO). G3 showed better performance than G1 and G2 in all evaluations. G2 showed better results than G1 in language, communication, personal-social, and fine motor-adaptive areas, except in the gross motor area. Aspects of language and communicative behaviors were lower in both experimental groups, especially in G1. Skills related to personal-social area showed no differences among the groups. Motor impairment of G1 and G2 and HL in G1 affected the development in the assessed areas, but these factors did not restrict personal-social development. Children with CP did not achieve high development in social function; however, the difference with relation to G3 was not statically significant. The CI provided a channel for oral language reception and social interaction, which has a key role in determining the quality of life.

Habilidades comunicativas de crianças prematuras e prematuras extremas

Objetivo comparar o desempenho das habilidades comunicativas, de crianças nascidas prematuras, prematuras extremas e típicas de idade cronológica entre dois e três anos. Métodos participaram do estudo 72 crianças distribuídas em quatro grupos: 20 prematuros (GE-I), 16 prematuros extremos (GE-II) e 36 crianças com desenvolvimento típico (GC-I e GC-II), de idade cronológica entre dois a três anos. Houve pareamento quanto à idade cronológica e sexo. A avaliação constou da aplicação do Protocolo de Anamnese e Observação do Comportamento Comunicativo. O tratamento estatístico constou do Teste “t” Student e do Teste de Mann-Whitney (p ≤ 0,05). Resultados na comparação entre os grupos de prematuros e típicos (GE-I e GC-I e GEII e GC-II), quanto às habilidades comunicativas verificou-se diferenças significantes, apesar da heterogeneidade no desempenho dos prematuros e prematuros extremos. Na comparação entre os prematuros (GE-I e GE-II) não foram observadas diferenças significantes, entretanto, GE-I obteve desempenho superior em todas as categorias, exceto para a categoria uso de gestos. As categorias de menor ocorrência para GE-I foram: respeitar troca de turno, participar e manter atividade dialógica. Para o GE-II foram: participar e manter atividade dialógica, realizar ordens complexas, iniciar e respeitar troca de turno, funções de informar, oferecer e produzir frases. Conclusão houve diferenças significantes no desempenho comunicativo das crianças prematuras e prematuras extremas, quanto comparadas às crianças típicas, mas não houve diferenças significantes na comparação entre os prematuros. Apesar dos resultados indicarem que os grupos de prematuros tendem ao atraso no desenvolvimento das habilidades comunicativas, os grupos não demonstraram ser homogêneos.

Habilidades de leitura em crianças com diagnóstico de hiperlexia: relato de caso

Hyperlexia is characterized by spontaneous and early acquisition of reading skills, manifested before the age of five, without any formal education. Expressive and receptive language deficit, excellent memory, delayed language skills, echolalia, perseverations, and difficulty to understand verbal contexts, are common symptoms in individuals with hyperlexia and global developmental disorders, including Asperger's syndrome. The aim of this study was to describe the reading skills of individuals with hyperlexia. The participants were six boys with a history of hyperlexia, perceived by relatives before 36 months of life, chronologically aged between four years and four months to five years and two months. The following evaluation procedures were applied: interview with the parents or responsible guardians, communicative behavior observation, Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT), recognition of alphabet letters and numbers, School Performance Test, text reading, and reading comprehension. The participants showed different performances in the PPVT, and recognized letters, numbers and isolated words. There was difficulty in answering the writing subtest; the majority did not understand the text that they read and all of them demonstrated recognition of letters and numbers. Some participants were able to read words and texts. However, all participants presented alterations in other areas of language development, such as receptive vocabulary, communicative behavior and understanding of the material read, in addition to altered behaviors of social adaptation, both interactive and restrictive.

Desempenho psicolinguístico e escolar de irmãos com mielomeningocele

TEMA: mielomeningocele e consequências para o desenvolvimento de habilidades psicolinguísticas e escolares. PROCEDIMENTOS: o objetivo deste estudo foi descrever e refletir sobre o desempenho psicolinguístico e escolar de irmãos com mielomeningocele lombar baixa. Participaram do estudo um menino de 14 anos e 5 meses (P1) e sua irmã de 6 anos e 6 meses (P2). Os procedimentos constaram de entrevista com familiares, Observação do Comportamento Comunicativo (OCC), Teste de Vocabulário por Imagens Peabody - TVIP, Teste Illinóis de Habilidades Psicolinguísticas (ITPA), Perfil de Habilidades Fonológicas (PHF), Teste de Desempenho Escolar (TDE), e Reconhecimento de letras e números (RLN). A análise dos resultados foi descritiva respeitando os manuais dos instrumentos. RESULTADOS: a linguagem oral encontra-se sem alteração evidente. No ITPA e PHF, verificou-se que P1 e P2 apresentaram dificuldade nas habilidades de memória, closura auditiva, expressão verbal, combinação de sons e consciência fonológica. P1 ainda apresentou dificuldade na habilidade de recepção visual e P2 nas habilidades de associação auditiva e closura gramatical. Ambas as crianças apresentaram alteração nas atividades de aprendizagem. CONCLUSÃO: os participantes do estudo apresentaram comportamento comunicativo, habilidades de linguagem oral e vocabulário receptivo sem alterações evidentes. P1 e P2 apresentaram alterações nas habilidades psicolinguísticas bem como no desempenho de atividades envolvendo leitura, escrita e aritmética. As dificuldades apresentadas causam impacto importante nas atividades acadêmicas, demonstrando vulnerabilidade cerebral no sistema de suporte para atividade de aprendizagem.

Síndrome do X Frágil com variante de Dandy-Walker: estudo clínico das manifestações comunicativas orais e escritas

The Fragile X syndrome is the most frequent cause of inherited intellectual disability. The Dandy-Walker variant is a specific constellation of neuroradiological findings. The present study reports oral and written communication findings in a 15-year-old boy with clinical and molecular diagnosis of Fragile X syndrome and neuroimaging findings consistent with Dandy-Walker variant. The speech-language pathology and audiology evaluation was carried out using the Communicative Behavior Observation, the Phonology assessment of the ABFW - Child Language Test, the Phonological Abilities Profile, the Test of School Performance, and the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities. Stomatognathic system and hearing assessments were also performed. It was observed: phonological, semantic, pragmatic and morphosyntactic deficits in oral language; deficits in psycholinguistic abilities (auditory reception, verbal expression, combination of sounds, auditory and visual sequential memory, auditory closure, auditory and visual association); and morphological and functional alterations in the stomatognathic system. Difficulties in decoding the graphical symbols were observed in reading. In writing, the subject presented omissions, agglutinations and multiple representations with the predominant use of vowels, besides difficulties in visuo-spatial organization. In mathematics, in spite of the numeric recognition, the participant didn't accomplish arithmetic operations. No alterations were observed in the peripheral hearing evaluation. The constellation of behavioral, cognitive, linguistic and perceptual symptoms described for Fragile X syndrome, in addition to the structural central nervous alterations observed in the Dandy-Walker variant, caused outstanding interferences in the development of communicative abilities, in reading and writing learning, and in the individual's social integration.

Desordens do espectro alcoólico fetal e habilidades de comunicação: relato de caso familiar

Este estudo teve como objetivo caracterizar o perfil de habilidades comunicativas de cinco irmãos com Desordens do Espectro Alcoólico Fetal. O diagnóstico de Desordens do Espectro Alcoólico Fetal foi realizado a partir do histórico gestacional positivo para álcool e identificação de sinais clínicos. A avaliação fonoaudiológica constou da Observação do Comportamento Comunicativo, Escala de Desenvolvimento Comportamental de Gesell e Amatruda, Teste de Vocabulário por Imagens Peabody e avaliação audiológica. Todos os participantes apresentaram alterações nos comportamentos motor grosso, motor delicado, adaptativo, pessoal-social e de linguagem em graus variados. As habilidades comunicativas estavam comprometidas para todos os participantes e S4 apresentava comportamentos autísticos. As Desordens do Espectro Alcoólico Fetal foram confirmadas em S1, S2 e S5 e o diagnóstico de Síndrome Alcoólica Fetal foi confirmado para S3 e S4. Os resultados apresentaram variabilidade no desenvolvimento das habilidades de desenvolvimento dos irmãos com as Desordens do Espectro Alcoólico Fetal. A variabilidade dos achados, principalmente nas habilidades comunicativas e comportamentais, sugere a necessidade de acompanhar crianças com histórico de uso de álcool pela mãe, visto o impacto destas desordens no desenvolvimento global destes indivíduos, com impacto nas atividades de vida diária e escolaridade.

Communicative and psycholinguistic abilities in children with phenylketonuria and congenital hypothyroidism

ABSTRACTThe Neonatal Screening for Inborn Errors of Metabolism of the Association of Parents and Friends of Special Needs Individuals (APAE) - Bauru, Brazil, was implanted and accredited by the Brazilian Ministry of Health in 1998. It covers about 286 cities of the Bauru region and 420 collection spots. Their activities include screening, diagnosis, treatment and assistance to congenital hypothyroidism (CH) and phenylketonuria (PKU), among others. In 2005, a partnership was established with the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, Bauru School of Dentistry, University of São Paulo, Bauru, seeking to characterize and to follow, by means of research studies, the development of the communicative abilities of children with CH and PKU. Objective: The aim of this study was to describe communicative and psycholinguistic abilities in children with CH and PKU. Materials and Methods: Sixty-eight children (25 children aged 1 to 120 months with PKU and 43 children aged 1 to 60 months with CH) participated in the study. The handbooks were analyzed and different instruments were applied (Observation of Communication Behavior, Early Language Milestone Scale, Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, Gesell & Amatruda's Behavioral Development Scale, Portage Operation Inventory, Language Development Evaluation Scale, Denver Developmental Screening Test, ABFW Child Language Test-phonology and Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities), according to the children's age group and developmental level. Results: It was observed that the children with PKU and CH at risk for alterations in their developmental abilities (motor, cognitive, linguistic, adaptive and personal-social), mainly in the first years of life. Alterations in the psycholinguistic abilities were also found, mainly after the preschool age. Attention deficits, language and cognitive alterations were more often observed in children with CH, while attention deficits with hyperactivity and alterations in the personal-social, language and motor adaptive abilities were more frequent in children with PKU. Conclusion: CH and PKU can cause communicative and psycholinguistic alterations that compromise the communication and affect the social integration and learning of these individuals, proving the need of having these abilities assisted by a speech and language pathologist.

New Definitions and Measures of Telecommunciations Access

Current definitions of telecommunications access are antiquated and overly simplistic. They overlook technological alternatives, overlaps, and interdependencies as well as patterns of usage and the integration of usage into daily lives. Ethnographic observation of communication behavior can be used to construct social indicators of telecommunications access and usage that are based on theories about communication and behavior, not technologies.
