Understanding the influence of cloud-based information and communication technology on supply chain resilience

PurposeIn today’s turbulent business environment, firms continually turn to technology as a panacea for supply chain resilience and performance problems. This article seeks to understand if information and communication technology (ICT) platforms, specifically cloud-based platforms, differ in their ability to enable supply chain resilience and operational performance.Design/methodology/approachEmpirical survey data was gathered, and a partial least squares structural equation model was performed on responses from 174 logistics and supply chain operations managers. A multigroup analysis compared the structural model measures of cloud-based and non-cloud-based platforms.FindingsThis research provides evidence that supply chain resilience and performance are agnostic of the ICT platform type and deeply rooted in the relational antecedents of cooperation and coordination. Tangentially, this study confirms concepts of coordination and cooperation supported by ICT are antecedents to the robustness and agility of supply chains. Moreover, empirical evidence also reveals that supply chain robustness mediates the relationships between supply chain agility, coordination and cooperation.Practical implicationsWhile firms continually seek technological solutions to bolster the resilience of their supply chains, we show that they should focus on developing the social elements of supply chain partnerships.Originality/valueThis study’s examination of the influence of ICT on supply chain resilience and performance contributes to the growing body of empirical analysis in the literature. Through its theoretical lens, this article deepens the understanding of analyzing supply chain resilience and performance measures between firms utilizing different ICT platforms.

Integrating on-demand transport into the public transport network: assessing the value for money of replacing fixed routes

ABSTRACT On-demand transport (ODT), enabled by advancements in intelligent communication technology and digital platform, serves various roles, from feeding passengers to mass transit to providing point-to-point services and replacing fixed route buses in low-demand areas. However, ODT performance varies, often falling short of widespread acceptance. This paper explores the impact of ODT operational models and fleet size on bus demand and service standards using a novel stop-level modelling approach. It evaluates service efficiency, trade-offs and challenges, highlighting that ODT can enhance network integration and provide net consumer surplus. However, its benefits require careful implementation to avoid overstated claims and to truly enhance social equity. The findings support integrating ODT into broader transport networks and restructuring fixed bus routes rather than treating ODT as a standalone solution.

How doinformation and communication technologyplatforms shape rural e‐governance: The case ofZhao‐louVillageon theWeCountyplatform

AbstractThis study investigates the role of information and communication technology (ICT) platforms in facilitating e‐governance within a rural context. A longitudinal single‐case study approach was employed, involving 37 semi‐structured interviews from 2019 to 2022. The findings reveal that information asymmetry and persistent tensions between the government and villagers hinder cooperative behaviour in rural governance, at varying degrees throughout all stages of e‐governance. Second, a contagion effect is identified, where the government coerces non‐cooperative villagers, exacerbating tensions. The coercive and negotiating‐compromising mechanism enabled by ICT platforms illustrates how the ICT platform enables the contagion effect occurs during rural policy deployment. Third, the goal incongruence between the government and villagers necessitates the government's utilisation of ICT platforms to adopt active engagement and induce event that encourage goal articulation, which facilitates a better goal alignment between both parties. This approach promotes the observation of collaborative behaviour among villagers and ultimately fosters increased collaboration with the government, that is, mimicking villagers' behaviour. Meanwhile, government stimulation can effectively facilitate the interaction between government and villagers, promoting the negotiation and compromise between the two parties. Such compromises can foster the goal congruence between the two parties, consequently encouraging greater participation from villagers in rural governance. The case offers valuable insights into the mechanisms by which ICT facilitates rural e‐governance, thereby holding significant implications for research on ICT‐rural governance and governments grappling with challenges in implementing rural policies.

The mobile payment method using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology platform began to be mentioned in the Vietnamese market around 2015 and will be widely welcomed in 2023 with the appearance of the Apple Pay application, giving customers a convenient payment experience without needing a network connection. In this article, the author uses research methods of synthesis and comparison focusing on clarifying the current status of NFC technology application in mobile payment in the world and Vietnam. From there, the author makes recommendations on legal corridors, incentive policies, scope of application, raising customer awareness of service utilities and solutions to security issues, personal data security and transaction authentication, to facilitate further strong development of this payment method in the Vietnamese market.

Network Traffic Classification Against Adversarial Attacks Based Deep Learning

Background: Cybersecurity is a prominent concern in today's interconnected world, encompassing both local and remote wireless and wired access across diverse communication technology platforms. It is important to recognize the threat posed by hackers who are currently compromising organizational functionalities, bypassing security measures, and stealing hypersensitive information. Common hacking techniques such as Portscan, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, and the use of Botnets, are frequently utilized by hackers. Materials and Methods: The authors explore the advantages of using Machine Learning (ML) to classify attacks such as Port Scanning, DDoS, Botnet, and Botnet-Attempt in a mixture of both benign and attack traffic. They use various Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) structures, each having distinct properties, to train and test on a benchmark dataset (CICIDS2017). The aim is to identify the most effective ANN model and the optimal number of input features required to classify data that contains events of Portscan, DDoS, Botnet, and Botnet-Attempt attacks. Results: Various features are used as inputs for an ML model with single and multiple hidden layers, each with different neurons, to evaluate their impact on classification accuracy using a Python language. The best accuracy obtained is 99.71%, achieved by using all features of the dataset and 4 hidden layers, while the accuracy obtained using only 7 features is 97.6%. Conclusion: ANN models can perform well in classifying network traffic against adversarial attacks by using an optimal combination of features as input and hidden layers.

Intermediary safe harbour from copyright infringement in India—Alternative to the interpretative conundrum

AbstractThe Information and Communication Technology (ICT) platforms that allow copyright owners to reach a large number of users and increase their economic fortune, contritely; enable the potential infringers preferring free‐riding to upload and distribute copyrighted materials. Under various theories of direct and secondary copyright infringement, the platforms now loosely called intermediaries are likely to become liable for copyright infringement. Like other jurisdictions, Indian law contains specific provisions to protect the intermediaries from such unanticipated liability. However, this intermediary liability and immunity law got muddied by inconsistent interpretations of the two operating statutes. Taking clues from the cross‐jurisdictional insights, this paper looks at the interpretative conundrum. Furthermore, the paper contends how the preferred interpretation is incompatible with the Berne Convention and Agreement on Trade‐Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights recommended three‐step doctrine for creating copyright exceptions. Ultimately, this paper advocates for a legislative intervention to clear the clouds of confusion in view of India's endeavour to enact a new law on ICT.

Hence, the provision of guidance is imperative to effectively assist teachers in managing the ICT classroom. The “Integrating Information and Communication Technologies in English for Specific Purposes” book aims to offer educators a comprehensive understanding of the integration of information and communication technology (ICT) with language learning and teaching. Development of a multilingual online course with the language support for teaching physics in English

<span lang="EN-US">Distance education offers an alternative to traditional teaching methods, particularly online courses. During the pandemic, the role of information and communication technologies in the field of education has increased and is used to organize both synchronous and asynchronous learning. However, not all information and communication technology (ICT) tools and platforms provide the necessary functionality for developing online courses in the direction of language integration. This article discusses the issues of creating a multilingual online course of physics in English with the necessary language support and additional functions for the development of students’ academic language. The study used such methods as a survey, focus groups, analytical and descriptive methods, and empirical research. The key features of the developed course are the use of various types of content and methods for assessing both subject and language knowledge and skills. The presented survey results, data on summative assessment (SE), and trial testing show the effectiveness of the developed course modules. The conclusions and results described in the article will be useful to teachers of natural sciences in general education and private schools, especially those using international programs, deputy directors, as well as teachers who teach their subjects in a second or third language.</span>

Stakeholder perception towards a machine‐learning‐based digital platform for detection and management of autism spectrum disorder

AbstractAutism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects approximately 1% of the population, presenting a significant healthcare challenge due to limited resources, particularly a shortage of clinicians, which impedes timely ASD detection and management in children. This study investigates stakeholder viewpoints regarding the effectiveness of integrating machine learning (ML) into the information and communications technology (ICT) platform for ASD detection and intervention. Primary stakeholders, including parents and clinicians, provide first hand experiences with this technology during and after the COVID‐19 pandemic. The research identifies critical technology adoption factors by synthesizing stakeholder input based on user experiences, technology design, technology utility, and its impact. Additionally, the study gathers insights from potential investors interested in assistive technologies. Stakeholders unanimously acknowledge the pivotal role of technology in enhancing current ASD detection and management. However, their attitudes toward technology adoption exhibit divergent trends during and after the COVID‐19 pandemic. The study highlights a shift toward a technology‐enabled, human‐centred framework, which gained prominence post‐pandemic. Various factors contributing to this shift in stakeholder perspective were identified, including caregiver stress, technostress, and pandemic‐induced environmental factors affecting stakeholders’ stress levels and motivating them to shift towards a human‐centric model. Stakeholders emphasize the paramount importance of human‐centred approaches in ASD detection and intervention, with technology serving as an empowering tool. Stakeholders also highlight the imperative ethical and legal considerations to foster trust and enhance the adoption of ML‐based technology. Consequently, future research should delve into stakeholder perspectives within the framework of fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics (FATE) to ensure these technologies’ responsible development and implementation.

INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY TOOLS AND STUDENTS’ HEALTHCARE IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN EDO STATE

The global outbreak of Covid-19 in late 2019 and early 2020 altered how information and communication technology platforms and devices were used. Virtual learning was incorporated into traditional classrooms by schools, digital marketing platforms were purchased by marketers, online transactions increased in financial services, online ticketing was purchased by transportation companies, and so forth. People adopted digital technology as a way of life as a result of this. Most locals became heavy users as a result. Has this had a negative impact on Edo State citizens' access to healthcare in the post-COVID-19 era? The goal of this study is to determine whether digital technologies have any detrimental effects on students' access to healthcare in Edo State's institutions of higher learning. Three research questions and hypotheses were presented and developed to direct this investigation, and the survey research methodology was chosen. For this study, 900 respondents were chosen using the basic random sample approach. The Digital Technology and Healthcare Questionnaire is the tool used to gather data (DTFHQ). At the 0.05 level of significance, the hypotheses were tested using the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). It was shown that students' health in postsecondary institutions is significantly impacted by their usage of ICT technologies. It is advised that the usage of ICT tools in many spheres of life be moderated in light of these findings. Furthermore, it is advised that medical professionals and home managers conduct an awareness training regarding the potential health risks associated with the use of ICT technologies.

USE OF VIDEO-BASED DATA TO INFORM PSYCHOSOCIAL INTERVENTIONS FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH DEMENTIA

Abstract The pandemic has accelerated technological developments in care services. Emerging evidence suggests feasibility of delivering evidence-based psychosocial interventions such as group cognitive stimulation therapy using information and communication technology (ICT) platforms. A unique opportunity offered by ICT is the more readily available data at session level to investigate nuanced, theoretically based outcome predictors, to improve efficacy of these complex interventions. Theoretically, the cognitive and wellbeing benefits of group cognitive stimulation therapy is related to the level of person-centred engagement. As part of an ongoing randomised controlled trial involving ICT-delivered group cognitive stimulation therapy, this study examines the use of big data analytics of session behavioural data to develop predictive algorithms of cognitive and wellbeing outcomes. In 78 people living with mild to moderate dementia from 26 groups, we create automatically estimated markers of facial expression and eye movement pattern, and hand-coded markers (using time-sampling method) of engagement level and speech/verbal production information, to autobiographical information presented in the session. These markers are used to predict changes in cognitive and wellbeing outcomes. Pilot analysis using hand-coded speech sample suggested strong correlation between time-sampled engagement level with cognitive benefits, and changes in information content and fluency with cognitive benefits after the group intervention (ranging from r=0.76 to 0.97, p< 0.001). The markers we develop in this study using video-based data from ICT-delivered therapy sessions, including deep learning-based emotion recognition and eye movement analysis with hidden Markov model, allow further application in understanding the mechanisms of action in different psychosocial interventions.

The initial segment of the paper examines the significance of gamification within the context of higher education, emphasizing its capacity to facilitate active learning, enhance student engagement, and optimize information retention. Acknowledging the necessity for a clear methodology, this study underscores the significance of careful planning, congruence with educational goals, and transparent articulation of anticipated outcomes in order to optimize the advantages derived from gamified educational encounters. The subsequent section examines the essential factors to be taken into account while implementing gamification, including but not limited to mobile compatibility, data security and privacy, analytics, and technical assistance. These characteristics are crucial in guaranteeing the achievement and long-term viability of gamification projects in educational institutions. A comprehensive examination of notable information and communication technology (ICT) platforms utilized for gamification purposes is performed, specifically emphasizing "Classcraft," a gamification platform designed specifically for educational contexts. Classcraft offers a range of customized features, real-time tracking capabilities, and seamless connection with learning management systems, rendering it an appealing tool for instructors seeking to establish immersive and captivating learning environments. The available research indicates that the utilization of Classcraft has a beneficial effect on student involvement, motivation, and academic achievement. In summary, the strategic incorporation of gamification inside information and communication technology (ICT) platforms such as Classcraft holds the promise of revolutionizing higher education through the enhancement of dynamic and engaging learning experiences. The optimal utilization and strict adherence to established guidelines are crucial in order to fully leverage the educational benefits of gamification, hence augmenting the overall standard of education in the era of digital advancements.

Strengthening Social Capital to Address Isolation and Loneliness in Long-Term Care Facilities During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Systematic Review of Research on Information and Communication Technologies.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately and severely affected older adults, namely those living in long-term care facilities (LTCFs). Aside from experiencing high mortality rates, survivors were critically concerned by social isolation and loneliness (SIL). To address this serious public health concern and stay connected with LTCF residents, information and communication technology (ICT) platforms (eg, video calls) were used as an alternative to maintaining social interactions amid the visiting restriction policy. This paper aimed to synthesize the effects of ICT-related communication interventions using SMS text messaging or chat, video, voice mail, or photo to address SIL in LTCF residents during the COVID-19 pandemic. In total, 2793 references published in English and French in 2019 and onward were obtained from 10 relevant databases: PsycINFO-Ovid, Ovid-MEDLINE, CINAHL-EBSCO, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Scopus, DirectScience, Communication & Mass Media Complete, IEEE Xplore, and ACM Digital Library. A 2-person screening approach was used, and the studies were screened independently and blindly. A narrative synthesis was performed to interpret the results of the included studies, and their quality was appraised. In total, 4 studies were included in the review. ICT-related applications were used to ensure connectedness to address SIL. ICT interventions consisted mainly of videoconferencing, intergroup video call sessions between residents, and chatting (SMS text messages and phone calls). Roughly 3 classes of mediating ICT tools were used: video calls using software applications (eg, Skype); robot systems embedding video telephones; and ordinary telecommunication such as telephone, internet, social media platforms, and videoconferencing. This review has included the role of humanoid robots in LTCFs as an innovation avenue because of their multipurpose use (eg, communication tools and remotely operable). Remote social capitalization through ICT applications has become an avenue to reduce SIL among LTCF residents. This review examined a social connection approach that will remain relevant and even be fostered after the COVID-19 pandemic. As families remain the main stakeholders of LTCFs, this study's findings could inform policy makers and frontline managers to better shape programs and initiatives to prevent or reduce SIL in LTCFs. Digitisation of higher education and research: Raising inclusivity and equity issues for indigenous students

This conceptual article critiques digitisation of higher education and research as it relates to inclusivity and equity for indigenous students. I argue that indigenous students’ access to education is not limited to indigenisation of their learning, knowledge and research; it is more about what they learn and how they learn it through technology – information and communication technology (ICT) and online platforms. These students are excluded and do not enjoy equal educational opportunities when digitising their learning and knowledge does not relate to their cultural contexts. In addition, innovative projects and programmes which are insensitive to the dynamics of indigenous knowledge further make indigenous knowledge vulnerable to colonial practices. This article contributes insights into the vulnerability of indigenous students and institutions of higher learning being uncritical of the digitisation of their learning, knowledge, and research. The article will conscientise institutions of higher learning to digitise learning and research from a truly transformational perspective.

An Evaluation of Technology Adoption During Remote Teaching and Learning at Tertiary Institution by Gender

Gender difference in how technology is used has been a long-time concern in education. This study examined the impact of the rapid transition from face-to-face learning to remote learning (RL) for students of selected higher education institutions in South Africa. The study employed a quantitative census sampling method as an electronic questionnaire administered to 243 respondents, mainly students enrolled in accounting and finance department in their second, third, and fourth year of study. In designing the questionnaire, ten items from the Technology Readiness Index (TRI 2.0) were adapted to determine the technology readiness of respondents. Furthermore, descriptive statistics were used to establish the common Information and Communications Technology (ICT) tools, platforms, and teaching approaches adopted by lecturers and estimate the technological readiness of students. This article revealed some challenges encountered by students while schools were closed due to the lockdown measures to contain the COVID-19 virus. From the findings in this study, it can be seen that male students are more likely to adjust faster than female students to RL. This result is consistent with some of the findings in the literature. Learning from home or other environments outside the university has been proven ineffective as students can get easily distracted by external factors that can affect their learning and understanding. This becomes more difficult for female students, especially in Africa, where it is believed that specific responsibilities are for girls. Statistically, there is a high level of anxiety among female students. This can be attributed to the exceptional living conditions and situations during the ongoing pandemic, such as uncertainty of the future, social isolation, challenges of RL, childcare, babysitting, and gender-based violence. The study recommended that policymakers introduce policies that address students' challenges, especially female students while working from home.

From control systems to safety culture in the global foodservice outlet arena: A Balearic Islands perspective.

BackgroundDespite the efforts made by companies and authorities in food safety control systems, there is currently a gap between the theoretical knowledge of the workforce and their real behavior in food service outlets in the hotel, restaurant, and catering sector (HORECA). Approaches and methodsThe proposed method involves the psychological empowerment of food business operators as well as food safety authorities and external consultants. This is achieved via an information and communication technology (ICT) platform, where they perform a self-assessment verification and the result is a rating score and a non-compliance traffic light, respectively, which is supervised by food safety authorities before it is displayed on a public platform for consumers to make an informed choice in real time. Conclusionsand future trends: The QxQ program strategy focuses on food handlers and food companies to promote their awareness of the dangers to consumers and the importance of the smarter control they perform. Through ICT empowerment, the QxQ program develops a geographically and technologically scalable strategy with respect to the scope of food safety culture in the Balearic Islands and therefore with the potential to be adopted at any location.The purpose of this commentary is to look toward the future, where food business operators, outside consultant technicians, as well as regulators, work together using cutting-edge technological solutions, to harmonise the interpretation of food safety regulations for a consistent approach and their due diligence at the EU and global level.

Platform based Innovation Ecosystems: Value Network Configuration Perspective

A platform-based innovation ecosystem links multiple markets and their corresponding stakeholders for joint value creation and innovation around a platform, and it is critical for the platform sponsor to manage the configuration efficiently for maximized value and survival. Through a multi-case study, we propose a configurational framework for platform ecosystems to analyze multi-stakeholder business structures, boundary decisions and their relationships. We define the context as for-profit business networks that leverage a digital platform to create multi-sided market circumstances and to engage partners as well as customers in joint innovation and value creation. Empirically we study five small to mid-sized digital information and communication technology platforms and their ecosystems. The discoveries elaborate on the four characteristic configurations and activities involved in the platform ecosystem management, and show configurational differences between open, semi-open, and closed innovation ecosystems. We propose the value-network configurations for the ecosystem, upstream producer, downstream consumer, and partner driven scenarios. Contradicting the existing literature, we argue that complementarities are created by two different producer actors and the consumption is influenced by two different downstream actors. We also argue that an internal production platform can be considered a platform ecosystem for innovation in the case of the extensive use of external knowledge and resource sources. The results extend the understanding of a platform ecosystem as a multi-layered configuration, and show what are the roles of different functions in the multi-layered structure.
