Diversity of common bean rhizobia in blackland of northeastern China and their symbiotic compatibility with two host varieties.

The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is an important crop in the world that forms root nodules with diverse rhizobia. Aiming to learn the rhizobial communities associated with the common bean in the black soil of Northeast China, 79 rhizobia were isolated from root nodules of two host varieties (Cuican and Jiadouwang) grown in two sites of blackland and were characterized by comparative sequence analyses of 16S rRNA, recA, atpD, nodC, and nifH genes, and whole genome. As a result, Rhizobium indigoferae, R. anhuiense, and R. croatiense as minor groups and three dominant novel Rhizobium species were identified based on their average nucleotide identity and DNA-DNA hybridization values to the type strains of relative species. This community composition of rhizobia associated with the common bean in the tested black soils was unique. Despite their different species affiliations, all of them were identified into the symbiovar phaseoli according to the phylogenies of symbiotic genes, nodC and nifH. While the phylogenetic discrepancies found in nodC, nifH evidenced that the evolutions of nodulation (nod) and nitrogen fixation (nif ) genes were partially independent. In addition, only one dominant rhizobial species was shared by the two common bean varieties grown in the two soil samples, implying that both the plant variety and the soil characteristics affected the compatibility between rhizobia and their hosts. These findings further enlarged the spectrum of common bean-nodulating rhizobia and added more information about the interactions among the soil factors, rhizobial species, and host plants in the symbiosis.

Parâmetros genéticos e seleção de linhagens de feijão-carioca resistentes à murcha-de-fusário

Abstract The objective of this work was to estimate genetic parameters and to select lines of carioca commercial bean group with high yield, great 100-seed weight, good grain appearance, and good resistance to fusarium wilt, disease caused by the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. phaseoli that inhabits the soil. A total of 114 lines coming from two populations were evaluated together with seven control genotypes in the winter crop season in the years/generations of 2015/F5:7 and 2016/F5:8. There is a genetic variability among the carioca common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) lines for all the traits evaluated, and the estimates of the genetic parameters show a possible successful selection for reaction to fusarium wilt, yield, grain appearance, and 100-seed weight. Twenty-four lines of carioca common bean that were selected combine high resistance to fusarium wilt, yield, 100-seed weight, and good grain appearance. CNFC 19126, CNFC 19205, and CNFC 19131 show a better performance than the control genotypes with the highest level of resistance, so their evaluation in multiple environments is recommended, aiming at new resistant cultivars to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. phaseoli.

Fitotoksičnost nikosulfurona na vegetativne parametre i komponente prinosa pasulja (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

Nicosulfuron (C15H18N6O6S) is a selective, translocating herbicide from the chemical group of sulfonylureas, which represent one of the most commonly applied groups of herbicides, especially in field plants. The aim of the work was to examine the effect of simulated drift of nicosulfuron on the common bean crop. The effect was monitored through vegetative parameters and yield components. The experiment was carried out in 2020 on the experimental field of the Research and Development Institute "Tamiš" in Pančevo (Vojvodina, Serbia). Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), variety Galeb, was used for testing. Five treatments (five different concentrations of nicosulfuron) were included in this trial, namely: 10%, 5%, 2,5%, 1,25%, 0,62% of the recommended application rate and a control treatment (without the application of the active substance). The obtained results showed that there were no significant differences in the height of the common bean plants between the treatments, but the treatment with the lowest concentration of nicosulfuron (0.62%) had a hormesis effect. It was observed that with an increase in the amount of nicosulfuron applied, the number of side branches and grain yield per m2 decreased, but the differences observed between the treatments were not statistically significant. Significant differences compared to the control were recorded only in the number of pods, when nicosulfuron was applied in a concentration of 10% of the recommended dose. The obtained results are significant from the point of view of practical agricultural production because the drift of herbicide working liquid is a frequent phenomenon in practice, so it is important to know the potential unwanted effects on the neighboring, non-target crops.

Stem, leaf and cotyledon resistance responses to a prevalent Sclerotinia sclerotiorum pathotype in Australia highlight new opportunities to improve white mould resistance in common bean

Context White mould (Sclerotinia sclerotiorum) inflicts major yield losses on common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris); yet, commercial cultivars known for their high yields and market-adapted grains lack physiological resistance to this disease. Aims This study aimed to test diverse common bean genotypes for resistance in stem, leaf and cotyledon tissues. Methods Thirty-four common bean genotypes with a wide range of agronomic traits and grain types, including genotypes noted previously for susceptible and resistant responses to white mould, were inoculated with the prevalent S. sclerotiorum isolate MBRS-1. Then they were assessed for resistance in stem, leaf and cotyledon tissues under controlled environment conditions, by inoculating plants with a 105 mL−1 hyphal fragment concentration. Key results There was significant (P < 0.001) variation in resistance responses in stem, leaf and cotyledon tissues across the genotypes. Contender, ICA Bunsi, XAN 280 and Taisho-Kintoki showed the highest resistance in stems, whereas Norvell 2558, Pico de Oro, Sanilac, Othelo and Negro Argel exhibited notable resistance in leaves. Metis, Canario 107, Pico de Oro, Pogonion and Jubilejnaja 287 displayed the most resistance in cotyledons. Conclusions This is the first reported attempt to determine the response of common bean germplasm to a prevalent pathotype of S. sclerotiorum in Australia. Bean genotypes exhibiting high-level resistance to white mould identified in this study can be used as parental lines for crosses in common bean breeding programs and/or directly as improved cultivars. Implications The study highlighted both the value of screening under controlled environmental conditions to reliably locate new stem, leaf and/or cotyledon resistances and the possibility of using rapid cotyledon screening to indicate stem resistances because the expression of resistances in cotyledons generally correlated strongly with those in stems.

Environmental variability in indirect selection for grain yield in common bean lines

An approach to the number of experiments that should be used in correlation analyses aimed at increasing efficiency in indirect selection for grain yield is unprecedented for common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). We hypothesize that trait correlation estimates vary in response to the growing environment. This study was undertaken to investigate the correlations between plant architecture and yield traits in common bean lines and to determine the minimum number of experiments required by Pearson’s linear correlation analysis to increase efficiency in indirect selection for grain yield. Seventeen common bean genotypes were evaluated for 17 agronomic traits in four experiments. Pearson’s linear correlation analyses were carried out using data from individual experiments and different combinations of growing seasons and years. Ten out of the 17 agronomic traits showed a significant genotype × environment interaction effect, meaning that common bean genotypes exhibited variation for most of the traits evaluated in different growing seasons and years, which resulted in changes in the correlation estimates between these traits. Pearson’s linear correlation estimates obtained between plant architecture and yield traits varied in significance, magnitude, and sign when data from individual experiments and combinations of growing seasons and years were considered. The number of grains per pod is the most promising agronomic trait used in indirect selection for grain yield in common bean lines. Data from at least three experiments should be used in Pearson’s linear correlation analysis to achieve greater efficiency in indirect selection for grain yield in common bean lines.

Resistance to Pythium root rot and anthracnose among Kenyan common bean genotypes and marker-assisted introgression of resistance genes

ABSTRACT Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is an important food legume crop and major protein source in Kenya and many parts of the world. However, the yields are low due to the diseases like anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum lindemunthianum and Pythium root rots. The study, therefore, sought to screen Kenyan common bean genotypes for anthracnose and Pythium resistance and to improve the resistance of local landraces to the two diseases. Local landraces and commercial cultivars were screened for resistance under greenhouse conditions for Pythium and in vitro for anthracnose. The results showed that majority of the landraces were moderately resistant to anthracnose and Pythium root rot. The study further utilized molecular markers linked to anthracnose and Pythium resistance, respectively, to determine their potential to detect specific resistance genes among the test genotypes. None of the markers amplified the test genotypes except the control genotypes pointing toward different resistance genes. Further, cultivars G2333 and KK8 were used as donor parents for anthracnose and Pythium resistance, respectively, in a marker-assisted backcross breeding program involving three high-yielding farmer-preferred landraces. A number of lines were developed that carry both resistance genes. These lines can be advanced for release as new cultivars to enhance common bean production in Kenya.

Bacteria Associated with the Roots of Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) at Different Development Stages: Diversity and Plant Growth Promotion.

Current agricultural methodologies are vulnerable to erratic climate and are dependent on cost-intensive fertilization to ensure high yields. Sustainable practices should be pursued to ensure food security. Phaseolus vulgaris L. is one of the most produced legumes worldwide and may be an alternative to reduce the environmental impact of meat production as a reliable source of high-quality protein. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are emerging as a sustainable option to increase agricultural production. To understand the dynamics between plants and microorganisms, the culturable microbiota of bean roots was isolated and identified at distinct stages of plant development (early and late vegetative growth, flowering, and pod) and root compartments (rhizoplane, endosphere, and nodules). Diversity and abundance of bacteria associated with root compartments differed throughout the plant life cycle. Bacterial plant growth promotion (PGP) and protection abilities (indole-3-acetic acid production, siderophore synthesis, and antifungal activity) were assessed and associated with plant phenology, demonstrating that among the bacteria associated with plant roots, several strains had an active role in the response to plant biological needs at each stage. Several strains stood out for their ability to display one or more PGP traits, being excellent candidates for efficient stage-specific biostimulants for application in precision agriculture.

Analysis of Nuclear DNA Content and Karyotype of Phaseolus vulgaris L.

The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), whose annual production is 26 million tons worldwide, is one of the main sources of protein and is known as one of the most important food sources. In this study, the karyotype variations and the genome size of four common bean genotypes in Turkey were investigated to determine whether the geographic variables in these regions affected the genome size and the karyotype parameters. In addition, it is known that as that the cytological and chromosomal parameters change under the influence of the climatic conditions of each region, appropriate and stable cytological methods for each plant facilitate and enable the determination of the chromosomal structure and the identification of specific chromosomes in the genotypes of the relevant region. Correct and valuable information such as this enables breeders and researchers to determine the correct shape and actual size of chromosomes. The genome size of the genotypes was measured with a flow cytometer, and chromosome analyses were performed with the squash method. For each genotype, the karyotype parameters, such as the number of somatic chromosomes, the Mean Total Chromosome Length (MTCL), the Mean Centromere Index (MCI), and the Mean Arm Ratio (MAR), were measured. The results showed that the highest and the lowest amounts of DNA per nucleus (3.28 pg and 1.49 pg) were observed in the Bitlis and Elaziğ genotypes. In addition, all genotype chromosome numbers were counted to be 2n = 2x = 22. The Mean Total Chromosome Length varied from 15.65 µm in Elaziğ to 34.24 µm in the Bitlis genotype. The Mean Chromosome Length ranged between 1.42 µm and 3.11 µm in the Elaziğ and Bitlis genotypes. The Hakkari and Van genotypes consist of eleven metacentric chromosomes, while the Bitlis and Elaziğ genotypes consist of ten metacentric chromosomes and one sub-metacentric chromosome. However, the Mean Centromere Index and Arm Ratio differed considerably among the genotypes. The highest (46.88) and the lowest (43.18) values of the Mean Centromere Index were observed in the Hakkari and Elaziğ genotypes, respectively. On the other hand, the lowest (1.15) and the highest (1.36) values of the Mean Arm Ratio were obtained in the Bitlis and Elaziğ genotypes, respectively. Eventually, intraspecies variations in genome size and chromosomal parameters were observed, and it was determined that the changes in nuclear DNA content and different chromosomal parameters among the four Phaseolus genotypes from four different regions of Turkey indicate the effect of climate change in the regions on these parameters. Such information in these areas can be used as useful information for the improvement of this plant and breeding programs.

Cell-free culture filtrate of Trichoderma longibrachiatum AD-1 as alternative approach to control Fusarium solani and induce defense response Phaseolus vulgaris L. plants

The present study was conducted to evaluate the antifungal activities of cell-free culture filtrate of Trichoderma isolated from rhizospheric soil of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) plants against growth and spore germination of Fusarium solani. The results noted that the cell-free culture filtrate of Trichoderma at different concentrations of isolated Trichoderma longibrachiatum AD-1 significantly inhibited mycelial growth of F. solani with growth reduction ranging from 28.8 to 97.3% and inhibited spore germination up to 96%. Compared to control, soil treated with cell-free culture filtrate of T. longibrachiatum AD-1 exhibited a significant reduction in the frequency of root rot disease and boosted the percentage of surviving plants and vegetative growth. To get insight into the biocontrol mechanism, we employed Real-Time Quantitative Reverse Transcription PCR (RT-qPCR), which revealed that the cell-free culture filtrate of Trichoderma in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) showed significant upregulation of defense-related genes PR1, PR2, PR3, and PR4. This study revealed that the cell-free culture filtrate of Trichoderma could be promising to develop an alternative natural agent to control root rot diseases caused by Fusarium spp.

Co-application of ACC deaminase-producing rhizobial bacteria and melatonin improves salt tolerance in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) through ion homeostasis

A comprehensive body of scientific evidence indicates that rhizobial bacteria and melatonin enhance salt tolerance of crop plants. The overall goal of this research was to evaluate the ability of Rhizobium leguminoserum bv phaseoli to suppress salinity stress impacts in common bean treated with melatonin. Treatments included bacterial inoculations (inoculated (RI) and non-inoculated (NI)), different salinity levels (non-saline (NS), 4 (S1) and 8 (S2) dS m−1 of NaCl) and priming (dry (PD), melatonin (PM100) and hydro (PH) priming) with six replications in growing media containing sterile sand and perlite (1:1). The results showed that the bacterial strain had the ability to produce indole acetic acid (IAA), ACC deaminase and siderophore. Plants exposed to salinity stress indicated a significant decline in growth, yield, yield components, nitrogen fixation and selective transport (ST), while showed a significant increase in sodium uptake. However, the combination of PM100 and RI treatments by improving growth, photosynthesis rate and nitrogen fixation positively influenced plant performance in saline conditions. The combined treatment declined the negative impacts of salinity by improving the potassium translocation, potassium to sodium ratio in the shoot and root and ST. In conclusion, the combination of melatonin and ACC deaminase producing rhizobium mitigated the negative effects of salinity. This result is attributed to the increased ST and decreased sodium uptake, which significantly reduced the accumulation of sodium ions in shoot.

Fresh Pod Yield, Physical and Nutritional Quality Attributes of Common Bean as Influenced by Conventional or Organic Farming Practices

The aim of the current study wat to comparatively assess the impact of different nitrogen (N) fertilization schemes on fresh pod yield and yield quality in either organically or conventionally grown common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Prior to common bean crop establishment, the experimental field site was cultivated following either organic (a) or conventional (b) farming practices with a winter non-legume crop (Brassica oleracea var. italica) (BR), or (c) with field bean (Vicia faba sp.) destined to serve as a green manure (GM) crop. At the end of the winter cultivation period the broccoli crop residues (BR) and green manure biomass (GM) were incorporated into the soil and the plots that accommodated the treatments (a) and (c) were followed by an organically cultivated common bean crop, while the conventional broccoli crop was followed by a conventionally cropped common bean crop. Additional to the plant residues (BR), sheep manure (SM) at a rate of 40 kg N ha-1 was also applied to the organically treated common beans, while the plots with a conventionally cropped common bean received 75 kg N ha-1. Organic common bean treated with SM + BR produced smaller pods of higher dry matter and bioactive compound content, responses that are correlated with limited soil N availability. No significant variations were observed on yield components and N levels of pods cultivated under organic (SM + GM) and conventional cropping systems. Pod sugar and starch content was not influenced by the different fertilization practices. In conclusion, we have demonstrated that the combined application of SM + GM can be considered as an efficient N-fertilisation strategy for organic crops of common bean, benefiting their nutritional value without compromising yield.

Genome-wide characterization of the common bean kinome: Catalog and insights into expression patterns and genetic organization

The protein kinase (PK) superfamily is one of the largest superfamilies in plants and is the core regulator of cellular signaling. Even considering this substantial importance, the kinome of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) has not been profiled yet. Here, we identified and characterised the complete set of kinases of common bean, performing an in-depth investigation with phylogenetic analyses and measurements of gene distribution, structural organization, protein properties, and expression patterns over a large set of RNA-Sequencing data. Being composed of 1,203 PKs distributed across all P. vulgaris chromosomes, this set represents 3.25% of all predicted proteins for the species. These PKs could be classified into 20 groups and 119 subfamilies, with a more pronounced abundance of subfamilies belonging to the receptor-like kinase (RLK)-Pelle group. In addition to provide a vast and rich reservoir of data, our study supplied insights into the compositional similarities between PK subfamilies, their evolutionary divergences, highly variable functional profile, structural diversity, and expression patterns, modeled with coexpression networks for investigating putative interactions associated with stress response.

Genome-Wide Identification of Aquaporin Genes in Adzuki Bean (Vigna angularis) and Expression Analysis under Drought Stress.

The adzuki bean Vigna angularis (Wild.) is an important leguminous crop cultivated mainly for food purposes in Asian countries; it represents a source of carbohydrates, digestible proteins, minerals, and vitamins. Aquaporins (AQPs) are crucial membrane proteins involved in the transmembrane diffusion of water and small solutes in all living organisms, including plants. In this study, we used the whole genome sequence of the adzuki bean for in silico analysis to comprehensively identify 40 Vigna angularis aquaporin (VaAQP) genes and reveal how these plants react to drought stress. VaAQPs were compared with AQPs from other closely-related leguminous plants, and the results showed that mustard (Brassica rapa) (59), barrel medic (Medicago truncatula) (46), soybean (Glycine max) (66), and common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) (41) had more AQP genes. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that forty VaAQPs belong to five subfamilies, with the VaPIPs (fifteen) subfamily the largest, followed by the VaNIPs (ten), VaTIPs (ten), VaSIPs (three), and VaXIPs (two) subfamilies. Furthermore, all AQP subcellular locations were found at the plasma membrane, and intron-exon analysis revealed a relationship between the intron number and gene expression, duplication, evolution, and diversity. Among the six motifs identified, motifs one, two, five, and six were prevalent in VaTIP, VaNIP, VaPIP, and VaXIP, while motifs one, three, and four were not observed in VaPIP1-3 and VaPIP1-4. Under drought stress, two of the VaAQPs (VaPIP2-1 and VaPIP2-5) showed significantly higher expression in the root tissue while the other two genes (VaPIP1-1 and VaPIP1-7) displayed variable expression in leaf tissue. This finding revealed that the selected VaAQPs might have unique molecular functions linked with the uptake of water under drought stress or in the exertion of osmoregulation to transport particular substrates rather than water to protect plants from drought. This study presents the first thorough investigation of VaAQPs in adzuki beans, and it reveals the transport mechanisms and related physiological processes that may be utilized for the development of drought-tolerant adzuki bean cultivars.

Short-Term Integrated Application of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Sulfur, and Boron Fertilizer and the Farmyard Manure Effect on the Yield and Yield Components of Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) at Alle Special Woreda, Southern Ethiopia

In Ethiopia, the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is an important grain legume with a high food and commercial value. Yet, its productivity is very low, which could be attributed to low levels of soil organic matter, nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), sulfur (S), and boron (B), and insufficient fertilizer application. Therefore, a field experiment was conducted during the 2019 cropping season in Alle, Southern Ethiopia, to evaluate the agronomic and economic responses of blended NPSB (18.7N-37.4P2O5-6.9S-0.25B) and farmyard manure (FYM) for common bean production. Four NPSB-blended fertilizer rates (0, 50, 100, and 150 kg·ha−1) and three FYM rates (0, 2.5, and 5 tons·ha−1) were used in the experiment. The experiment was laid out using a randomized complete block design in a factorial arrangement with four replications. The result showed that NPSB and FYM significantly affected crop phenology, growth, yield, and yield components. Application of 100 kg·ha−1 NPSB along with 5 t·ha−1 FYM significantly increased the number of nodules, hundred seed weight, and grain production. The results also showed that using 100 kg·ha−1 NPSB fertilizer in combination with 5 t·ha−1 FYM produced the highest grain, which is about 173% higher grain yield than the control. Partial budget analysis indicated that application of 100 kg·ha−1 NPSB fertilizer with 5 t·ha−1 FYM resulted in the highest marginal rate of return (1308%) and the best net profit. Therefore, an integrated application of 100 kg·ha−1 NPSB fertilizer and 5 t·ha−1 FYM is suggested.

Biochemical content and yield of some cultivars of green bean (<I>Phaseolus vulgaris</I> L.) under Moscow region conditions

Relevance. Increased demand in Russia for common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) varieties of domestic breeding has stimulated the Federal Scientific Vegetable Center of breeding to intensify research on the creation of new asparagus bean varieties of vegetable direction.Materials and methods. Four vegetable bean varieties – Secunda, Lika, Ulyasha, Si Bemol of the laboratory of selection and seed production of vegetable Legume crops of the Federal Scientific Vegetable Center were used as the material for the study. The counts and observations were made according to the Methodology of the State Variety Trial of Agricultural Crops, 1975. The count of productivity was carried out in the technical stage of ripeness by replications. Harvesting was carried out when the biological stage of ripeness was reached. Biochemical studies of plants were carried out in the laboratoryanalytical department of the FSBSI FSVC. The biochemical composition of vegetable bean (green bean) varieties was studied according to the following indicators: determination of the total content of water-soluble antioxidants, ascorbic acid, dry matter, polyphenols, monosaccharides, total sugar content and starch.Results. Evaluation of samples by aggregate factors contributes to the selection of the most promising and high-quality varieties for their introduction into production. As a result of the research of vegetable bean on the main economically valuable features and biochemical composition for the period from 2018 to 2020, the varieties Lika and Ulyasha were selected. They were distinguished by high productivity of beans and seeds. Green bean variety Lika was noted for the highest total content of water-soluble antioxidants, ascorbic acid and the total of sugars content, the green bean variety "lobio" Ulyasha - high content of polyphenols and the total of antioxidants in the alcohol extract. Stable high yield, adaptive potential and high quality of beans, confirmed by the results of biochemical evaluation, allow us to recommend these varieties for consumption by the population as part of the diet and as an alternative to meat and dairy products.

The Common Bean Small Heat Shock Protein Nodulin 22 from Phaseolus vulgaris L. Assembles into Functional High-Molecular-Weight Oligomers.

Small heat shock proteins (sHsps) are present in all domains of life. These proteins are responsible for binding unfolded proteins to prevent their aggregation. sHsps form dynamic oligomers of different sizes and constitute transient reservoirs for folding competent proteins that are subsequently refolded by ATP-dependent chaperone systems. In plants, the sHsp family is rather diverse and has been associated with the ability of plants to survive diverse environmental stresses. Nodulin 22 (PvNod22) is an sHsp of the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) located in the endoplasmic reticulum. This protein is expressed in response to stress (heat or oxidative) or in plant roots during mycorrhizal and rhizobial symbiosis. In this work, we study its oligomeric state using a combination of in silico and experimental approaches. We found that recombinant PvNod22 was able to protect a target protein from heat unfolding in vitro. We also demonstrated that PvNod22 assembles into high-molecular-weight oligomers with diameters of ~15 nm under stress-free conditions. These oligomers can cluster together to form high-weight polydisperse agglomerates with temperature-dependent interactions; in contrast, the oligomers are stable regarding temperature.

Intercropping and Rhizobium Inoculation Affected Microclimate and Performance of Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) Varieties.

A field experiment was carried out at Hawassa, during the 2020 cropping season with the objective to evaluate the impact of maize-common bean intercropping and Rhizobium inoculation on microclimate, growth, and yield of common bean varieties. Treatments consisting of two common bean varieties, two levels of inoculation and three spatial arrangements of common bean with another sole maize were laid out in a factorial arrangement in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The results revealed that the main effect of spatial arrangements highly significantly (P < 0.001) affected soil and leaf temperature. Soil moisture content was improved under intercropped plots compared with sole cropping. The intensity of light and qualities, such as red, far-red, and photosynthetically active radiations (μmol m-2 s-1) and ultraviolet rays (UV)-A, UV-B (W m-2), were reduced under intercropping as compared to the sole. Interaction effects of variety, spatial arrangements, and inoculation significantly (P < 0.01) affected plant height and leaf area index. Inoculated sole Nassir outperformed for plant height and leaf area index. Inoculated sole Hawassa Dume variety performed best for nodule number plant-1, nodule dry weight plant-1, pods number plant-1, 100 seed weight, grain yield, and above-ground biomass yield. The highest grain yield (2.8 t ha-1) was recorded from inoculated sole Hawassa Dume. However, considering the equivalent ratio (LER), intercropping with one maize row to two haricot bean rows spatial arrangements was productive by 62% more than sole cropping (total land equivalent ratio of 1.62%).

A peptide fraction from hardened common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) induces endothelium-dependent antihypertensive and renal effects in rats

Beans reached the research spotlight as a source of bioactive compounds capable of modulating different functions. Recently, we reported antioxidant and oxidonitrergic effect of a low molecular weight peptide fraction (<3 kDa) from hardened bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) in vitro and ex vivo, which necessitate further in vivo assessments. This work aimed to evaluate the hypotensive effect and the involved physiological mechanisms of the hardened common bean peptide (Phaseolus vulgaris) in normotensive (Wistar) and hypertensive (SHR) animals. Bean flour was combined with a solution containing acetonitrile, water and formic acid (25: 24: 1). Protein extract (PV3) was fractioned (3 kDa membrane). We assessed PV3 effects on renal function and hemodynamics of wistar (WT–normotensive) and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and measured systemic arterial pressure and flow in aortic and renal beds. The potential endothelial and oxidonitrergic involvements were tested in isolated renal artery rings. As results, we found that PV3: I) decreased food consumption in SHR, increased water intake and urinary volume in WT, increased glomerular filtration rate in WT and SHR, caused natriuresis in SHR; II) caused NO- and endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation in renal artery rings; III) reduced arterial pressure and resistance in aortic and renal vascular beds; IV) caused antihypertensive effects in a dose-dependent manner. Current findings support PV3 as a source of bioactive peptides and raise the potential of composing nutraceutical formulations to treat renal and cardiovascular diseases.

Biocontrol of root rot complex disease of Phaseolus vulgaris by Streptomyces sp. strains in the field

Soil-borne pathogens associated with root rot complex diseases cause major yield losses in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) worldwide. The lack of active ingredients available against these pathogens makes disease control difficult. Seed treatments with Streptomyces spp. have been described as a potential ecofriendly strategy against this complex disease. Here, we evaluate the effect of Streptomyces sp. strains CBQ-EA2 and CBQ-B-8 as biological control agents (BCAs) against root rot complex disease of P. vulgaris, mainly caused by Macrophomina phaseolina and Rhizoctonia solani under natural field conditions in Cuba. To this end, seed treatments with Streptomyces sp. strains CBQ-EA2 and CBQ-B-8, using single or mixed applications, were examined. Seed treatments with the BCA Trichoderma harzianum Rifai A-34 and the chemical Celest® Top 312 FS were included for comparison. In all experimental fields, treatments with Streptomyces spp. had significantly higher efficacy in reducing disease incidence (DI) and disease severity (DS) than the chemical Celest® Top 312 FS, and a similar effect as that by the BCA T. harzianum A-34. Most of the treatments evaluated showed higher germination, quality and yield of legumes than the nontreated control. Seed treatments using the combination of the two actinobacterial strains (Streptomyces sp. CBQ-EA-2+ CBQ-B-8) showed higher effectiveness in reducing DI and DS, and enhancing germination, yield and quality of legumes compared with the nontreated control, with a similar effect as that with the BCA T. harzianum A-34 and the chemical Celest® Top 312 FS. Overall, microbial consortia deserve further research in the future to develop potential biological products for crop protection.

Yield performance and adaptation of advanced large-seeded common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) genotypes in Ethiopia

To ensure the food demand of the rapidly growing population along with changing climate and limiting resources, development and adoption of high-yielding crop cultivars adapting to the adverse effects of climate is crucial for enhancing food production and productivity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance and adaptability of 23 advanced bean lines generated by single-seed descent and two commercial varieties (Batu and SAB-736), using additive main effects and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) and genotype plus G x E interaction (GGE) models. Field experiments were conducted in 2019 wet season (from July to October) at five diverse growing environments of Ethiopia. Wide variations were observed across the genotypes and environments for grain yield and other related traits. Mean performance of genotypes for yield ranged from 1.20 to 1.67 t ha −1 across environments, with a grand mean of 1.50 t ha −1 thereby favors genetic enhancement of the trait through selection. Environmental and interaction impacts were greater for all measured traits including yield. Except for number of pod plant −1 and 100 seed weight where interaction effect was more important, the percent variation due to environment was the highest for all traits expression, from 14.76 to 91.09%, to the total variation. Three advanced genotypes showed better yield than SAB-736 (the recent c. variety) and general adaptation across the environments. But, their consistency should be checked across seasons to suggest them for cultivation on these and other similar environments.
