HORWOOD Professor Owen Horwood studied under Professor Hutt at the University of Cape Town for the Bachelor of Commerce degree, graduating as such in 1938. After holding senior positions in industry he was appointed Senior lecturer - later associate professor - in Hutt's Department of Commerce (Applied Economics) at UCT at the end of 1947, taking the place of his friend and fellow student, Basil Yamey, who had accepted a lecturing post at the London School of Economics. Horwood was closely associated with Hutt as a colleague at UCT for more than eight years. Thereafter he served as professor and head of the Department of Economics, first in the newly established University College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland and then in the University of Natal, of which he subsequently became Principal and Vice Chancellor. He was Visiting Professor of Economics at Duke University in 1961/62. Horwood was appointed to the South African Cabinet in 1972, becoming Minister of Finance at the beginning of 1975, a position he held for nearly ten years. After retiring from politics, he served as chairman of the Nedbank Group (now Nedcor) for five years.
