The fuel distribution in diesel spray is a predominant factor to the engine performance. For the purpose of improvement of the combustion characteristics in diesel engine, many studies on the fuel distribution in unevaporated spray have been carried out. It is necessary to reveal the relation between the fuel distribution data obtained in unevaporated spray and the diesel combustion. In this study, the effect of fuel injection pressure on combustion in a diesel engine was investigated and the fuel distribution in unevaporated spray was measured by means of the image analysis. The results are as follows:(1) As the increase in the fuel injection pressure, the combustion duration, the specific fuel consumption and the smoke density decreased.(2) There was a considerable correlation between the fuel distribution measured in unevaporated spray and the rate of heat release in the diesel engine.
