Formation of Supernarrow Borophene Nanoribbons

Borophenes have sparked considerable interest owing to their fascinating physical characteristics and diverse polymorphism. However, borophene nanoribbons (BNRs) with widths less than 2 nm have not been achieved. Herein, we report the experimental realization of supernarrow BNRs. Combining scanning tunneling microscopy imaging with density functional theory modeling and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we demonstrate that, under the applied growth conditions, boron atoms can penetrate the outermost layer of Au(111) and form BNRs composed of a pair of zigzag (2,2) boron rows. The BNRs have a width self‐contained to ∼1 nm and dipoles at the edges to keep them separated. They are embedded in the outermost Au layer and shielded on top by the evacuated Au atoms, free of the need for post‐passivation. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals distinct edge states, primarily attributed to the localized spin at the BNRs’ zigzag edges. This work adds a new member to the boron material family and introduces a new physical feature to borophenes.

Electronic inhomogeneity and phase fluctuation in one-unit-cell FeSe films

One-unit-cell FeSe films on SrTiO3 substrates are of great interest owing to significantly enlarged pairing gaps characterized by two coherence peaks at ±10 meV and ±20 meV. In-situ transport measurement is desired to reveal novel properties. Here, we performed in-situ microscale electrical transport and combined scanning tunneling microscopy measurements on continuous one-unit-cell FeSe films with twin boundaries. Our results indicate the broadened superconducting transition in FeSe/SrTiO3 is related to intrinsic electronic inhomogeneity due to distinct two-gap features and phase fluctuations of two-dimensional superconductivity.

Artificial kagome lattices of Shockley surface states patterned by halogen hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks

Artificial electronic kagome lattices may emerge from electronic potential landscapes using customized structures with exotic supersymmetries, benefiting from the confinement of Shockley surface-state electrons on coinage metals, which offers a flexible approach to realizing intriguing quantum phases of matter that are highly desired but scarce in available kagome materials. Here, we devise a general strategy to construct varieties of electronic kagome lattices by utilizing the on-surface synthesis of halogen hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (XHOFs). As a proof of concept, we demonstrate three XHOFs on Ag(111) and Au(111) surfaces, which correspondingly deliver regular, breathing, and chiral breathing diatomic-kagome lattices with patterned potential landscapes, showing evident topological edge states at the interfaces. The combination of scanning tunnelling microscopy and noncontact atomic force microscopy, complemented by density functional theory and tight-binding calculations, directly substantiates our method as a reliable and effective way to achieve electronic kagome lattices for engineering quantum states.

Steering Electron-Induced Surface Reaction via a Molecular Assembly Approach.

Electrons not only serve as a "reactant" in redox reactions but also play a role in "catalyzing" some chemical processes. Despite the significance and ubiquitousness of electron-induced chemistry, many related scientific issues still await further exploration, among which is the impact of molecular assembly. In this work, microscopic insights into the vital role of molecular assembly in tweaking the electron-induced surface chemistry are unfolded by combined scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory studies. It is shown that the selective dissociation of a C-Cl bond in 4,4″-dichloro-1,1':3',1''-terphenyl (DCTP) on Cu(111) can be efficiently triggered by an electron injection via the STM tip into the unoccupied molecular orbital. The DCTP molecules are embedded in different assembly structures, including its self-assembly and coassemblies with Br adatoms. The energy threshold for the C-Cl bond cleavage increases as more Br adatoms stay close to the molecule, indicative of the sensitive response of the electron-induced surface reactivity of the C-Cl bond to the subtle change in the molecular assembly. Such a phenomenon is rationalized by the energy shift of the involved unoccupied molecular orbital of DCTP that is embedded in different assemblies. These findings shed new light on the tuning effect of molecular assembly on electron-induced reactions and introduce an efficient approach to precisely steer surface chemistry.

Probe the Dynamic Adsorption and Phase Transition of Underpotential Deposition Processes at Electrode-Electrolyte Interfaces.

Electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (EC-STM) and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (E-QCM) techniques in combination with DFT calculations have been applied to reveal the static phase and the phase transition of copper underpotential deposition (UPD) on a gold electrode surface. EC-STM demonstrated, for the first time, the direct visualization of the disintegration of (√3 × √3)R30° copper UPD adlayer with coadsorbed SO42- while changing sample potential (ES) toward the redox Pa2/Pc2 peaks, which are associated with the phase transition between the Cu UPD (√3 × √3)R30° phase II and disordered randomly adsorbed phase III. DFT calculations show that SO42- binds via three oxygens to the bridge sites of the copper with sulfate being located directly above the copper vacancy in the (√3 × √3)R30° adlayer, whereas the remaining oxygen of the sulfate points away from the surface. E-QCM measurement of the change of the electric charge due to Cu UPD Faradaic processes, the change of the interfacial mass due to the adsorption and desorption of Cu(II) and SO42-, and the formation and stripping of UPD copper on the gold surface provide complementary information that validates the EC-STM and DFT results. This work demonstrated the advantage of using complementary in situ experimental techniques (E-QCM and EC-STM) combined with simulations to obtain an accurate and complete picture of the dynamic interfacial adsorption and UPD processes at the electrode/electrolyte interface.

Probing Catalytic Sites and Adsorbate Spillover on Ultrathin FeO2-x Film on Ir(111) during CO Oxidation.

The spatially resolved identification of active sites on the heterogeneous catalyst surface is an essential step toward directly visualizing a catalytic reaction with atomic scale. To date, ferrous centers on platinum group metals have shown promising potential for low-temperature CO catalytic oxidation, but the temporal and spatial distribution of active sites during the reaction and how molecular-scale structures develop at the interface are not fully understood. Here, we studied the catalytic CO oxidation and the effect of co-adsorbed hydrogen on the FeO2-x/Ir(111) surface. Combining scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), isotope-labeled pulse reaction measurements, and DFT calculations, we identified both FeO2/Ir and FeO2/FeO sites as active sites with different reactivity. The trilayer O-Fe-O structure with its Moiré pattern can be fully recovered after O2 exposure, where molecular O2 dissociates at the FeO/Ir interface. Additionally, as a competitor, dissociated hydrogen migrates onto the oxide film with the formation of surface hydroxyl and water clusters down to 150 K.

Bistability between π-diradical open-shell and closed-shell states in indeno[1,2-a]fluorene.

Indenofluorenes are non-benzenoid conjugated hydrocarbons that have received great interest owing to their unusual electronic structure and potential applications in nonlinear optics and photovoltaics. Here we report the generation of unsubstituted indeno[1,2-a]fluorene on various surfaces by the cleavage of two C-H bonds in 7,12-dihydroindeno[1,2-a]fluorene through voltage pulses applied by the tip of a combined scanning tunnelling microscope and atomic force microscope. On bilayer NaCl on Au(111), indeno[1,2-a]fluorene is in the neutral charge state, but it exhibits charge bistability between neutral and anionic states on the lower-workfunction surfaces of bilayer NaCl on Ag(111) and Cu(111). In the neutral state, indeno[1,2-a]fluorene exhibits one of two ground states: an open-shell π-diradical state, predicted to be a triplet by density functional and multireference many-body perturbation theory calculations, or a closed-shell state with a para-quinodimethane moiety in the as-indacene core. We observe switching between open- and closed-shell states of a single molecule by changing its adsorption site on NaCl.

Two-component nematic superconductivity in 4Hb-TaS2

Most superconductors have an isotropic, single component order parameter and are well described by the standard (BCS) theory for superconductivity. Unconventional, multiple-component superconductors are exceptionally rare and are much less understood. Here, we combine scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved macroscopic transport for studying the candidate chiral superconductor, 4Hb-TaS2. We reveal quasi-periodic one-dimensional modulations in the tunneling conductance accompanied by two-fold symmetric superconducting critical field. The strong modulation of the in-plane critical field, Hc2, points to a nematic, unconventional order parameter. However, the imaged vortex core is isotropic at low temperatures. We suggest a model that reconciles this apparent discrepancy and takes into account previously observed spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking at low temperatures. The model describes a competition between a dominating chiral superconducting order parameter and a nematic one. The latter emerges close to the normal phase. Our results strongly support the existence of two-component superconductivity in 4Hb-TaS2 and can provide valuable insights into other systems with coexistent charge order and superconductivity.

The effect of water on gold supported chiral graphene nanoribbons: rupture of conjugation by an alternating hydrogenation pattern.

In the last few years we have observed a breakpoint in the development of graphene-derived technologies, such as liquid phase filtering and their application to electronics. In most of these cases, they imply exposure of the material to solvents and ambient moisture, either in the fabrication of the material or the final device. The present study demonstrates the sensitivity of graphene nanoribbon (GNR) zigzag edges to water, even in extremely low concentrations. We have addressed the unique reactivity of (3,1)-chiral GNR with moisture on Au(111). Water shows a reductive behaviour, hydrogenating the central carbon of the zigzag segments. By combining scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) with simulations, we demonstrate how their reactivity reaches a thermodynamic limit when half of the unit cells are reduced, resulting in an alternating pattern of hydrogenated and pristine unit cells starting from the terminal segments. Once a quasi-perfect alternation is reached, the reaction stops regardless of the water concentration. The hydrogenated segments limit the electronic conjugation of the GNR, but the reduction can be reversed both by tip manipulation and annealing. Selective tip-induced dehydrogenation allowed the stabilization of radical states at the edges of the ribbons, while the annealing of the sample completely recovered the original, pristine GNR.

Adsorption, Single‐Molecule Manipulation, and Self‐Assembly of Borazine on Ag(111)

AbstractThe interaction of borazine with metal supports and the concomitant surface chemistry play important roles in the synthesis of hexagonal boron nitride and the assembly of BN‐doped carbon nanostructures, thus making adsorbed borazine an intriguing model system. Herein, the first real space characterization of individual borazine molecules and highly ordered borazine self‐assemblies on solid supports, combining scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), scanning tunneling spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and complementary density functional theory modeling is reported. Specifically, a weak, nondissociative adsorption of borazine with the ring aligned in parallel to the surface plane is observed on Ag(111) upon low temperature deposition. Borazine is found to favor hollow adsorption sites, which guide the assembly of intricate borazine assemblies including a porous, chiral honeycomb‐like network, and dense‐packed monolayer films. Additionally, a modification of the borazine adsorption configuration by STM‐based manipulation is demonstrated. Dehydrogenation of individual molecules by voltages pulses yields an upright standing borazine fragment bound via B to Ag. This study thus provides a comprehensive, single‐molecule level characterization of borazine adsorption and surface chemistry on a characteristic coinage metal support and may serve as a reference for advanced low‐dimensional materials based on functionalized borazines or including BN units as dopants.

Size Control of On-Surface Self-Assembled Nanochains Using Soft Building Blocks.

Owing to their conformational flexibility, soft molecules with side chains play a crucial role in molecular self-assembly or self-organization processes toward bottom-up building of supramolecular nanostructures. However, the influence of the rotating side chains in the confined space and subsequent surface-confined supramolecular self-assembly remains rarely explored. Herein, using the spatial confinement effect between soft building blocks, we realized size control on surface-confined supramolecular coordination self-assembly through the synergy between the repulsive steric hindrance and the attractive chemical interactions. Combining scanning tunneling microscopy with density functional theory calculations and Monte Carlo simulations, we elucidated the effective repulsive force generated by the thermal wiggling motions of the soft building blocks, allowing length tuning of the self-assembled chain structures. Through a delicate balance between the repulsive interaction induced by the spatial confinement effect and the coordinate chemical interaction, we provide a new strategy for controlling the geometry of the on-surface supramolecular nanostructures.

On-Surface Synthesis of Multiple Cu Atom-Bridged Organometallic Oligomers.

A metal-metal bond between coordination complexes has the nature of a covalent bond in hydrocarbons. While bimetallic and trimetallic compounds usually have three-dimensional structures in solution, the high directionality and robustness of the bond can be applied for on-surface syntheses. Here, we present a systematic formation of complex organometallic oligomers on Cu(111) through sequential ring opening of 11,11,12,12-tetraphenyl-1,4,5,8-tetraazaanthraquinodimethane and bonding of phenanthroline derivatives by multiple Cu atoms. A detailed characterization with a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory calculations revealed the role of the Cu adatoms in both enantiomers of the chiral oligomers. Furthermore, we found sufficient strength of the bonds against sliding friction by manipulating the oligomers up to a hexamer. This finding may help to increase the variety of organometallic nanostructures on surfaces.

Visualizing the Promoting Role of Interfacial Water in the Deprotonation of Formic Acid on Cu(111).

Water plays a crucial role in various heterogeneous catalytic reactions, but the atomic-scale characterization of how water participates in these chemical processes remains a significant challenge. Here we directly visualize the promoting role of interfacial water in the deprotonation of formic acid (FA) on a metal surface, using combined scanning tunneling microscopy and qPlus-based noncontact atomic force microscopy. We find the dissociation of FA when coadsorbed with water on the Cu(111) surface, resulting in the formation of hydronium and formate ions. Interestingly, most of the hydrated proton and formate ions exhibit a phase-separated behavior on Cu(111), in which Eigen and Zundel cations assemble into a monolayer hexagonal hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding) network, and bidentate formate ions are solvated with water and aggregate into one-dimensional chains or two-dimensional H-bonding networks. This phase-separated behavior is essential for preventing the proton transfer back from hydronium to formate and the reformation of FA. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the participation of water significantly reduces the deprotonation barrier of FA on Cu(111), in which water catalyzes the decomposition of FA through the Grotthuss proton transfer mechanism. In addition, the separate solvation of hydronium and bidentate formate ions is energetically preferred due to the enhanced interaction with the copper substrate. The promoting role of water in the deprotonation of FA is further confirmed by the temperature-programmed desorption experiment, which shows that the intensity of the H2 desorption peak significantly increases and the desorption of FA declines when water and FA coadsorbed on the Cu(111) surface.

Visualizing the Hierarchical Evolution of Aryl-Metal Bonding in Organometallic Nanostructures on Ag(111).

On-surface dehalogenative coupling reactions are promising for constructing nanostructures with diverse properties and functionalities. Extensive efforts have been devoted to single aryl-halogen (C-X) substituents and substitutions at various functionalization sites (typically including meta- and para-substitutions) to generate aryl-aryl single bonds. Moreover, multiple C-X substituents at the ortho-site and the peri- and bay-regions have been applied to create a variety of ring scaffolds. However, for multiple C-X substituents, the hierarchy of aryl-metal bond formation and dissociation remains elusive. Herein, by combining scanning tunneling microscopy imaging and density functional theory calculations, we have visualized and demonstrated the hierarchical evolution of aryl-metal bonding in organometallic intermediates involved in a dehalogenative coupling reaction on Ag(111), using a molecular precursor with both para-substitution and potential bay-region substitution. Our results elucidate how metal atoms are progressively embedded into and removed from organometallic intermediates, enhancing the understanding of on-surface dehalogenative coupling reactions for the controlled construction of the desired nanostructures.

From One-Dimensional Disordered Racemate to Ordered Racemic Conglomerates through Metal-Coordination-Driven Self-Assembly at the Liquid-Solid Interface.

In recent years, there has been significant focus on investigating and controlling chiral self-assembly, specifically in the context of enantiomeric separation. This study explores the self-assembly behavior of 4-dodecyl-3,6-di(2-pyridyl)pyridazine (DPP-C12) at the interface between heptanoic acid (HA) and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) using a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and multiscale molecular modeling. The self-assembled monolayer structure formed by DPP-C12 is periodic in one direction, but aperiodic in the direction orthogonal to it. These structures resemble 1D disordered racemic compounds. Upon introducing palladium [Pd(II)] ions, complexing with DPP-C12, these 1D disordered racemic compounds spontaneously transform into 2D racemic conglomerates, which is rationalized with the assistance of force-field simulations. Our findings provide insights into the regulation of two-dimensional chirality.

N-Heterocyclic Olefins on a Silicon Surface.

Our findings offer new prospects in the design of tailor-made ligand structures in organic electronics and optoelectronics, catalysis, and material science.

Tunable strain and bandgap in subcritical-sized MoS2 nanobubbles

Nanobubbles naturally formed at the interface between 2D materials and their substrate are known to act as exciton recombination centers because of the reduced bandgap due to local strain, which in turn scales with the aspect ratio of the bubbles. The common understanding suggests that the aspect ratio is a universal constant independent of the bubble size. Here, by combining scanning tunneling microscopy and molecular dynamics, we show that the universal aspect ratio breaks down in MoS2 nanobubbles below a critical radius (≈10 nm), where the aspect ratio increases with increasing size. Accordingly, additional atomic-level analyses indicate that the strain increases from 3% to 6% in the sub-critical size range. Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we demonstrate that the bandgap decreases as a function of the size. Thus, tunable quantum emitters can be obtained in 2D semiconductors by controlling the radius of the nanobubbles.

Spontaneous transmetalation at the ZnPc/Al(100) interface

Metal-phthalocyanines (MPcs) are a class of organic macrocycles that have received much attention for their potential use in various applications, including molecular electronics. In recent years, the on-surface synthesis of different MPcs has been demonstrated via deposition of atomic species, sample heating and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) manipulation. However, the spontaneous substitution of the central metal atom with a substrate one, known as transmetalation, remains a less explored process. Here, we study the transmetalation of ZnPc on Al(100) using a combination of STM and density functional theory (DFT) computations. Previously published X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data indicate the absence of Zn atoms from the interface, while our STM images show that a central atom is still present. This suggests that the transmetalation process occurs spontaneously for all ZnPc molecules. Our DFT calculations reveal that the transmetalation of Zn with Al releases 2 eV per molecule, providing thermodynamic evidence for the process. The on-surface synthesized aluminium phthalocyanine (AlPc) molecules are stabilised by the formation of a bond between the central metal atom and the substrate, similar to that found in chloroaluminium phthalocyanine (ClAlPc), with the consequent suppresion of the paramagnetism of free AlPc.
