Selecting the approach for dynamic modelling of CO2 capture in biomass/waste fired CHP plants

Integrating CO2 capture with biomass/waste fired combined heat and power (CHP) plants is a promising method to achieve negative emissions. However, the use of versatile biomass/waste and the dynamic operation of CHP plants result in bigger fluctuations in the properties of flue gas (FG), e.g. CO2 concentration (CO2vol%) and flowrates, and the heat that can be used for CO2 capture, when comparing with coal fired power plants. To address such a challenge, dynamic modelling is essential to accurately estimate the amount of captured CO2 and optimize the operation of CO2 capture. This paper compares three dynamic approaches commonly used in literature, namely using the ideal static model (IST) and using dynamic models without control (Dw/oC) and with control (DwC), for MEA based chemical absorption CO2 capture. The performance of approaches is assessed under the variations of key factors, including the flowrate and CO2vol% of FG, and the available heat for CO2 capture. Simulation results show clear differences. For example, when the CO2vol% drops from 15.7 % to 9.7 % (about 38 %) within 4 hours, DwC gives the highest amount of captured CO2, which is 7.3 % and 22.3 % higher than IST and Dw/oC, respectively. It is also found that the time step size has a clear impact on the CO2 capture amount, especially for DwC. Based on the results, suggestions are also provided regarding the selection of dynamic modelling approaches for different purposes of simulations.

Using flexible energy system interactions amongst industry, district heating, and the power sector to increase renewable energy penetration

Sweden’s goal of 100% renewable electricity generation by 2040 requires investments in intermittent electricity production (e.g. wind power). However, increasing the share of intermittent electricity production presents challenges, including reduced flexibility of electricity production. A strategy for overcoming this issue is developing flexibility in electricity consumption. This study analyses the potential for using flexible industrial processes, heat pumps (HP), and combined heat and power (CHP) plants in Swedish district heating systems to increase the share of wind power capacity without compromising grid stability. The simulation tool EnergyPLAN was used to assess the potential contribution of these strategies. The analysis includes a range of annual wind power production between 45 and 60 TWh. The required electricity imports and critical excess electricity (that can neither be used nor exported due to transmission line limitations) were used to evaluate the system’s stability. Managing the operation of CHP plants, HPs, and industrial processes in a flexible way is challenging, but these strategies may still play a decisive role in increasing the share of renewable electricity production and reducing demand peaks in cities. Whilst HP regulation is better at reducing excess electricity production at lower wind power capacities (from 32 to 15% for the analysed interval of wind power production), CHP regulation becomes more relevant when wind power capacity increases (from 14 to 39%). Like HP regulation, flexibility in electricity demand in industrial processes had a greater percentage contribution at lower wind power capacities. Combining HP, CHP regulation, and flexible electricity demands in industry can reduce excess electricity production by 68–80% and electricity imports by 14–26%. Wind power contributing to grid stabilisation reduces excess electricity production but does not reduce electricity imports.

Flexibility provision by combined heat and power plants – An evaluation of benefits from a plant and system perspective

Variable renewable electricity generation is likely to constitute a large share of future electricity systems. In such electricity systems, the cost and resource efficiency can be improved by employing strategies to manage variations. This work investigates combined heat and power (CHP) plant flexibility as a variation management strategy in an energy system context, considering the operation and cost-competitiveness of CHP plants. An energy system optimization model with detailed representation of CHP plant flexibility is applied, covering the electricity and district heating sectors in one Swedish electricity price area. The results show that investments in CHP plants are dimensioned based on the demand for district heating rather than electricity. In the system studied, this implies that CHP plant capacity is small relative to electricity system variations, and variation management using CHP plants has a weak impact on the total system cost of supplying electricity and district heating. However, flexibility measures increase CHP plant competitiveness in scenarios with low system flexibility (assuming low availability of hydropower or no thermal energy storage) although investments in CHP capacity are sensitive to fuel cost. It is found that while district heating is the dominant CHP product (constituting 50%–90% of the annual CHP energy output), the dispatchable electricity supply has a high value and comprises around 60% of the annual CHP plant revenue. In all scenarios, operational flexibility of the boiler is more valuable than a flexible steam cycle power-to-heat ratio.

A multiple system level modeling approach to coupled energy markets: Incentives for combined heat and power generation at the plant, city and regional energy system levels

The energy system can be subdivided into interconnected structural levels with differing boundary conditions and objectives. For heat and power generation, these levels may be the: electricity price area (regional); heat price area (city); and production site (power plant). This work presents a multi-system modeling approach for the analysis of investments and operation of combined heat and power (CHP) plants, as optimized on a regional, city, or production site energy system level. The modeling framework, comprising three energy system optimization models at the respective levels, is applied to a case study of Sweden, electricity price area SE3. The modeling levels are optimized separately but linked through electricity and heat prices. The results show that optimized CHP plant investments and operation on the three levels can both align and differ, depending on conditions. With a low biomass price and moderate congestion in transmission capacity into the city, the results from the three levels generally align. Differences arise if the biomass price is increased, which impacts the competitiveness of CHP plants in the region, while city-level CHP investments are mainly determined by the local heat demand and less-sensitive to external changes. The differences indicate a risk for diverging expectations between system levels.

Data-Driven Optimal Design of a CHP Plant for a Hospital Building: Highlights on the Role of Biogas and Energy Storages on the Performance

Combined heat and power (CHP) generation plants are an assessed valuable solution to significantly reduce primary energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. Nevertheless, the primary energy saving (PES) and CO2 reduction potentials of this solution are strictly related to the accurate definition and management of thermal and electric loads. Data-driven analysis could represent a significant contribution for optimizing the CHP plant design and operation and then to fully deploy this potential. In this paper, the use of a bi-level optimization approach for the design of a CHP is applied to a real application (a large Italian hospital in Rome). Based on historical data of the hospital thermal and electric demand, clustering analysis is applied to identify a limited number of load patterns representative of the annual load. These selected patterns are then used as input data in the design procedure. A Mixed Integer Linear Programming coupled with a Genetic Algorithm is implemented to optimize the energy dispatch and size of the CHP plant, respectively, with the aim of maximizing the PES while minimizing total costs and carbon emissions. Finally, the effects of integrating biogas from the Anaerobic Digestion (AD) of the Spent Coffee Ground (SCG) and Energy Storage (ES) technologies are investigated. The results achieved provide a benchmark for the application of these technologies in this specific field, highlighting performances and benefits with respect to traditional approaches. The effective design of the CHP unit allows for achieving CO2 reduction in the order of 10%, ensuring economic savings (up to 40%), when compared with a baseline configuration where no CHP is installed. Further environmental benefits can be achieved by means of the integration of AD and ES pushing the CO2 savings up to 20%, still keeping the economical convenience of the capital investment.

Techno-Economic Optimization of Electricity and Heat Production in a Gas-Fired Combined Heat and Power Plant With a Heat Accumulator

Abstract At present, power systems based on gas turbines are mainly used for electricity and heat generation. Gas turbines are used in industrial and institutional applications due to high-temperature exhaust, which can be used for heating, drying, or process steam production. The combined cycle gas turbine plants are a mature technology with high reliability and offering rapid response to changing demand for electricity and heat. The combination of a gas turbine with a heat recovery system and a heat accumulator makes the combined heat and power (CHP) plant a flexible unit. The paper presents the optimization tool for the planning process of electricity and heat production in the gas-fired CHP plant with a heat accumulator. The detailed mathematical model of the analyzed cogeneration plant was developed with the EBSILON®Professional and verified based on the results from on-site tests and warranty measurements. The implemented optimization algorithm is used to maximize the profits of the CHP plant operation. The presented solution is based on an evolutionary algorithm. The optimization algorithm is applied to the production determination for the day-ahead planning horizon, with 1-h time step. The obtained results show that the developed optimization model is a reliable and efficient tool for production planning in a CHP plant with gas turbines. The comparative exergy analysis for different technologies of heat recovery from gas turbine exhaust gases was performed to evaluate the quality of the energy conversion process in the CHP plant.

Structural Analysis and Control of a Model of Two-Site Electricity and Heat Supply

This paper introduces a control problem of regulation of energy flows in a two-site electricity and heat supply system, where two combined heat and power (CHP) plants are interconnected via electricity and heat flows. The control problem is motivated by recent development of fast operation of CHP plants to provide ancillary services of power system on the order of tens of seconds to minutes. Due to the physical constraint that the responses of the heat subsystem are not necessary as fast as those of the electric subsystem, the target controlled state is not represented by any isolated equilibrium point, implying that stability of the system is lost in the long-term sense on the order of hours. In this paper, we first prove in the context of nonlinear control theory that the state-space model of the two-site system is nonminimum phase due to nonexistence of isolated equilibrium points of the associated zero dynamics. Instead, we locate a one-dimensional (1D) invariant manifold that represents the target controlled flows completely. Then, by utilizing a virtual output under which the state-space model becomes minimum phase, we synthesize a controller that achieves not only the regulation of energy flows in the short-term regime but also stabilization of an equilibrium point in the long-term regime. Effectiveness of the synthesized controller is established with numerical simulations with a practical set of model parameters.

District Heating Technologies: Is it Chance for CHP Plants in Variable and Competitive Operation Conditions?

District heating system with power generation is integrated in the electricity system since combined heat and power (CHP) plants are used for heat supply. Nowadays, the changes happen in the electricity system and conventional CHP plant operation. They are caused by wide integration of renewable energy sources (RES) in energy production process, feed-in tariffs for RES, the implementation of market mechanisms, and the incremented requirement in energy efficiency and flexibility of power plants. This creates new opportunities and conditions for district heating (DH) and power system cooperation though the use of DH flexible technologies, i.e., power-to-heat (P2H) technologies (electric boilers (EB) and heat pumps). The use of P2H technologies is limited and they are not costs-efficient due to electricity tariff formed components. Two Targets of EB use at power plant are evaluated, omitting these components, to show the usefulness and significant of these technologies for conventional generation.

Gasification process integration with existing combined heat and power plants for polygeneration of dimethyl ether or methanol: A detailed profitability analysis

Combustion of waste for cogeneration of heat and power is the most convenient and practical choice to carry out through combined heat and power (CHP) plants. But, seasonal variation in heat demand throughout the year affects the operation of CHP plants. This fluctuation in the CHP operation cause less annual operating hours for the plant equipment and is also not profitable for stakeholders. This study aims to assess the technical potential of integrated gasification process with existing CHP plants for either dimethyl ether (DME) or methanol production through refuse-derived fuel (RDF). Process integration considers that the CHP plant provides the necessary heat for biofuel synthesis during off-peak hours. Mass and heat integration methods are used to develop and simulate the polygeneration processes for heat, power, and biofuel production. Both technical and economic indicators are reported and compared to assess the potential for both biofuels through process integration. Annual operation data of a real CHP plant has been extracted to evaluate the integrated processes. A flexible gasification configuration is selected for the integrated approach i.e. CHP runs at full load to provide the heat demand and only the excess heat of CHP plant is utilized for biofuel production. The energetic efficiencies of the polygeneration systems are compared with the standalone systems. Technical analysis of process integration shows the enhancement of the operational capacity of CHP during off-peak hours and it can produce biofuels without compromising the annual heat demand. Production of methanol through process integration shows ∼67% energetic efficiency while methanol production gives ∼65%. The efficiencies are higher than standalone DME and methanol processes (51% and 53%, respectively) but lower than standalone CHP plant i.e. 81%, however the process integration increases the operating time of the CHP plant with more economic benefits. Economic analysis coupled with uncertainty analysis through Monte Carlo simulations shows that by integrating CHP with gasifier to produce biofuels is significantly profitable as compared with only heat and electricity production. But, DME as a potential product shows more economic benefits than methanol. The uncertainty analysis through Monte Carlo simulations shows that the profitable probability of DME as a product in future is also greater than methanol due to higher DME selling price. The uncertainty analysis further shows that prices of DME and methanol with waste biomass prices in future will have a greater impact on the economic performance of the proposed polygeneration process.

Energetic and Exergetic Performance of short term thermal storages in urban district heating networks

Meeting the heat demand of all customers attached, is the main objective for the operation of district heating (DH) systems combined with combined heat and power (CHP) plants. On the other hand, the economic ratification for the operation of CHP plants strongly depends on highly volatile electricity prices on the market. This trend will be reinforced in future, due to the additional integration and exploitation of renewable energies. Within this techno-economic field of most different operational objectives, DH systems and CHP plants must find a way for a cost-covering and efficient operation in future.Against this background, time shifts in producing and allocating heat supplied in parallel with electricity, are most attractive for DH system and CHP plant operators. Thus, margins on the electricity market could be maximized. On the other hand, heat amounts produced in parallel should be decoupled from the production of electricity as efficient as possible. Thus, thermal energy storages enter the limelight of interest for DH system operators. However, aspects concerning most different mechanisms for energetic and exergetic losses have to be considered for an optimized operation of these systems.Within this paper, the energetic and exergetic performance of sensible thermal storages will be examined. Underlying loss mechanisms of typical urban thermal storages are described qualitatively and quantified energetically and exergetically. For this purpose, existing models from literature are combined with practically relevant operational parameters for simulations.

Optimal operation of a CHP plant participating in the German electricity balancing and day-ahead spot market

During the last years, operators of combined heat and power (CHP) plants are challenged by changing circumstances in the electricity markets. While ensuring a stable heat and power supply for customers, CHP plant operators seek to maximise the profitability of the CHP plant operation. We propose a comprehensive concept and illustrate its potential for increasing the profitability when operating a CHP plant with heat storage by participating in multiple electricity markets. For this purpose, the structure of the decision-making process consisting of bid submission, market clearing and CHP plant operation planning is represented. A multistage stochastic mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed that simultaneously optimises the operation of the CHP plant with heat storage and bidding in sequential electricity markets. Price uncertainty is captured by means of stochastic processes. The proposed concept is applied to the real case of a municipal energy supply company that participates in the German day-ahead spot and balancing market. Results of the case study illustrate how trading in sequential electricity markets can result in an increased profitability of the CHP plant operation, where additional revenues from trading offset higher generation costs. Furthermore, we exemplify how the optimal operation of the CHP plant and heat storage device are adjusted according to revenue potential in multiple electricity markets.

Optimal Coordination of CHP Plants with Renewable Energy Generation Considering Substitutability between Electricity and Heat

Abstract Combined heat and power (CHP) plants have experienced rapid development in recent years for achieving high energy efficiency. Moreover with the increasing penetration of renewable energy generation (REG), CHP plants have responsibility for providing flexible services in accommodating REG. With the development of electric heating, the extent of utilizing electricity for substituting conventional heat provided by district heating (DH) is studied. The possibility of encouraging consumers selecting different kinds of energy forms for space heating in response to particular conditions within the electricity system is analyzed. Being able to transform heating demand to electrical demand removes the heat production restriction of CHP plants and achieves the flexible operation of CHP plants for satisfying large-scale renewable energy integration. The optimization model for dispatching CHP plants to minimize overall cost while satisfying the end-users need is developed. Simulation result shows that the proposed technique can smooth the variations in net load -decreasing peak-valley ratio by 38%. And 5% operation cost can also be saved due to the overall optimization of the integrated energy system.

Operational Strategies of Wet-Cycle Micro Gas Turbines and Their Economic Evaluation

The simultaneous expansion of variable renewables and combined heat and power (CHP) plants in Europe has given rise to a discussion about their compatibility. Due to the concurrence of high wind power generation and high heating loads, it has been argued that only the flexible, electricity-oriented operation of CHP plants could go along with the extended penetration of renewables in the European energy system. The current work focuses on the wet-cycle simulation of a Turbec T-100. Three operational strategies are applied on the heat and electricity demand data of a public building, to assess the economic and environmental performance of the wet cycle. The operation of the micro gas turbine (mGT) is modeled in aspen plus, and the model is validated with data found in the literature. The economic aspects of the operational strategies are assessed with a financial model, which takes into account the current CHP policy incentives and price levels. Furthermore, the advantages and drawbacks of wet operation are highlighted by its comparison to the typical heat-driven operation of dry-cycle mGTs, with a reference to the same case study. It is shown that the wet-cycle turbines have a higher number of full load equivalent operating hours and can achieve higher investment payback, with minor drawbacks to their overall environmental performance.

NUMERICAL STUDY OF THERMAL SCHEMES OF THERMAL POWER PLANTS FULFILLED WITH THE АID OF THEIR TOPOLOGICAL MODELS

Further improvement of natural gas usage in power industry is associated with transition to the combined-cycle gas technology, primarily at combined heat and power plants (CHP). Renovation of technology of conversion of fuel energy into heat and electricity flows is effective while it is performed simultaneously with the elaboration of thermal circuits of CHP by insertion heat accumulators and absorption lithium bromide heat pumps (ALBHP) in the structure of CHP; the mentioned insertion amends thermodynamic as well as economic and environmental indicators of CHP renovation and also develops CHP maneuverability. The ability of CHP to provide heat in required quantity, their capacity to change electricity generation output without excessive fuel consumption is extremely relevant for the energy system that incorporates thermal power plants as dominating component. At the same time the displacement of traditional electrical power regulators take place. Implementation of projects of this kind requires the elaboration of CHP flow diagram calculation methods and determining relevant indicators. The results of the numerical study of the energy characteristics of CHP with the aid of the topological models of the existing heat flow diagrams of CHP that incorporate ALBHP for recovery of low-temperature waste of heat flows of systems of cooling water circulating are presented in the article. An example of calculation, the results of the CHP thermodynamic efficiency evaluation, the change of the energy characteristics for different modes of operation of CHP caused by implementation of ALBHP are shown. The conditions for the effective application of lithium bromide absorption heat pumps are specified, as well as the rate of increase of thermodynamic efficiency; the changes of maneuverability of CHP with high initial parameters are identified, the natural gas savings in The Republic of Belarus are determined.

Thermo-Economic Assessment of a Olive Pomace Gasifier for Cogeneration Applications

Abstract A thermo-economic analysis of a combined heat and power (CHP) plant fed by syngas produced through the gasification of dry olive pomace is presented. The plant is composed by a 800 kWt downdraft gasifier, a gas clean-up system, a 200 kWe microturbine (MGT) and a heat recovery system to cogenerate hot water. Surplus heat is used to dry olive pomace from 50% to 17% wb moisture content. The plant is modeled in ASPEN Plus. Real data from experimental tests are used to calibrate the gasifier model, while the technical specification and performance of the CHP plant are collected from commercial plants in operation and data from manufacturers. Mass and energy balances are reported throughout the paper. The thermodynamic simulation of the biomass gasifier coupled to the MGT, the thermal and electrical conversion efficiency and temperature of cogenerated heat available are also presented. A thermo-economic assessment is then proposed, to investigate the economic profitability of this small scale CHP plant in the Italian energy policy scenario and considering the subsidies available for renewable electricity in the form of feed-in tariffs. For this purpose, the case study of base load CHP plant operation and heat supplied to different typologies of energy end user is assumed. The results allow quantifying the most influencing economic and technical factors that affect the performance and profitability of such investment and the bottlenecks that should be faced to facilitate a broader implementation of such CHP schemes for on site generation.

Complex analysis of energy production technologies from solid biomass in the Ukraine

The results of the energetic, economic, and environmental analyses of technologies of energy production from solid biomass are considered. Examples of the introduction of the technology of the direct combustion of biomass (straw and wood) in a boiler installation, a domestic boiler, and a combined heat and power plant (CHPP) are considered. The results indicate the energetic and environmental reasonability of implementation of such projects. From the economic viewpoint, the introduction of the boilers that use the biomass is profitable with the substitution of natural gas for the state-financed and industrial consumers, and the CHPP operation with the use of biomass is profitable with selling the electrical energy by the “feed-in” tariff.

A MINLP model including the pressure levels and multiperiods for CHP process optimisation

In this paper a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model for small-scale combined heat and power (CHP) plant synthesis and operation is presented. The model includes also the modelling of pressures levels and part load operation unlike the model presented in earlier work. Also, a detailed model of a back-pressure steam turbine is added to the model, taking into account the efficiency changes in turbine stages and the steam extraction pressure dependence on the steam mass flow rate. The sensitivity analysis shows that the developed model can be solved fairly reliably with commercial local MINLP solvers. The model corresponds well with a simulation model based on an existing plant. The model is able to find improved small-scale CHP designs that have higher efficiencies and that are profitable for wide ranges of electricity prices and fossil CO 2 emission permit prices. The developed model is a suitable decision making tool when evaluating the trade-offs between investments, profits, and fossil CO 2 emissions in small-scale CHP plant synthesis and operation. However, the formulations of the model are not limited to small-scale CHP processes and can be used to model also larger CHP processes and energy systems.
