Cloud Computing, Big Data, and Open Access at EDUCAUSE 2009

Soon after first major snowstorm of season, 3,800 delegates to EDUCAUSE 2009 were greeted in Denver by warm temperatures and blue skies over distant front range from November 3-6, 2009. With a national climate of shrinking IT budgets and increasing needs at institutions of higher education, many sessions and conversations centered around taking advantage of economies represented by new technologies such as cloud computing and distributed communication tools. Higher education IT professionals gathered at Colorado Convention Center and simultaneously online to uncover the best thinking in higher education.

This overview summarizes topics from the 31(th) Annual Meeting of ASBMR held at Colorado Convention Center in Denver on September 11-15, 2009. Out of the 300 orally presented papers, I picked up mainly translational and clinical studies, focusing on hormones such as PTH, vitamin D, estrogen and FGF23, and new anti-osteoporotic drugs.

PROCEEDINGS OF THE 2004 ANNUAL COUNCIL MEETING

The meeting of the Outgoing Council of the Paleontological Society (PS) was called to order by President William I. Ausich at 5:08 p.m. on 6 November 2004, in Room 604 of the Colorado Convention Center. Council members Patricia H. Kelley, David J. Bottjer, Mark E. Patzkowsky, Roger D. K. Thomas, Robert A. Gastaldo, Lisa E. Park, Jonathan M. Adrain, William A. DiMichele, Russell D. “Tim” White, Mark A. Wilson, Dale A. Springer, Leif Tapanila, Elizabeth A. Heise, Thomas Olszewski, Craig W. Oyen, and Scott M. Ritter were present. Peter J. Harries, Editor of Priscum , was also present; Mary L. Droser participated in the last part of the meeting. President Ausich presented his report. He thanked those members of Council who were completing their terms of service, including the Coeditors of Paleobiology and three Section chairs. He expressed appreciation for the good work of people who were rotating off various committees, and he announced their replacements. He thanked those officers who were continuing on the Council for their support. These and other acknowledgments are expressed in full in the minutes of the Business meeting. President Ausich congratulated award winners Martin A. Buzas, Peter J. Wagner, and Thomas E. Whiteley, for the record. He noted that plans for NAPC 2005 were on track. The Society had received a grant of $25,125 from the NSF to support travel by students to this meeting. President Ausich thanked Lisa Park and Roger Thomas for their efforts to recruit and retain members. He reported that J-Stor was in the process of making the entire Journal of Paleontology available electronically. This had involved collaboration with SEPM, as the two organizations published the JP as a joint enterprise until 1984. SEPM holds the copyright to the JP up to that date. The future costs of energy

Matthew R. Simmons will be one of the seven distinguished panelists of the TLE Forum V: “Globalization of the Energy Business,” at the SEG Annual Meeting in Denver, Monday, 11 October 2004, at the Colorado Convention Center. Our current economy and lifestyle are a byproduct and prime benefit afforded us from our ability to explore, develop, and deliver secure energy resources at reasonable prices. Coal initially fueled the industrial revolution from the 19th century up to the early 20th century. When oil displaced coal as the primary fuel of choice in the 20th century, global growth in mechanization, industrialization and transportation rapidly accelerated. The energy infrastructure we have today has created a 21st century miracle in which the world's general population has access to potable water, more food, and much improved lifestyles. However, the foundation and sustainability of this energy infrastructure on which we have depended so heavily, and for so long, is now vulnerable due to over two decades of unsustainable low oil and gas prices. To obtain a barometer on the future costs of energy, it is essential to understand the principles about how important goods are priced. We know from Economics 101 that products are priced based on supply, demand, and the perceived added value. Long-term prices must create adequate returns for producers and suppliers; otherwise, suppliers lose money and go out of business. Safe and stable returns allow markets to manage debt wisely, resulting in lower product prices. Thus, long-term contracts at fair prices eventually lower the cost of any valued product. Why? Because low-cost debt safely anchors the total investment, AAA-rated debt is extremely inexpensive, and a 15% return on equity is a great deal! Denver preview: Small changes, big difference

SEG returns to Denver, Colorado, for its International Exhibition and 74th Annual Meeting. This premier showcase for exploration and exploitation technology and services will take place 10–15 October 2004 at the Colorado Convention Center. Following the old American adage, “if it ain't broke don't fix it,” this year's meeting is preserving the successful elements of recent meetings while introducing some small changes that, nonetheless, will favorably impact the experience.

Putting the pieces together: A new look at the SEG Annual Meeting

Puzzles are always fun and the really tough ones can be quite a challenge. So… imagine that you have been asked to construct a puzzle and that each piece will be hand carved by a different artist. This group of artists will get together to talk about the pieces 10–12 times, but only on a few occasions will all be present and no whole pieces are viewed. Phone, fax, and email are, of course, available. The master blueprint exists only in the individual minds of the participants and each one hopes that they all have the same or a similar picture in mind. A month from now, these artists will all slap their finished pieces down at the Colorado Convention Center with about $2.5 millon and the 1997 financial well-being of the SEG riding on the results.

Meeting room design—An architect’s perspective

C. W. Fentress J. H. Bradburn and Associates was the lead designer for the Colorado Convention Center, Jefferson County Court Building, and for two new airport passenger terminals in Denver and Seoul. From the architect’s perspective, there are many considerations in the design of meeting spaces. The author, Principal in Charge of Design, will share his insight into what clients want in design, and what clients think is important to their customers. Acoustics and noise issues are discussed in the context of the overall design project.
