Practice and discussion on application ability-oriented college English education reform in Beijing university of Chinese medicine

College English education in TCM universities should set up its own unique education system characterized by the TCM characteristics, manipulability and generalizability. Here the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine was taken as an example to discuss the necessity, theoretical basis, specific methods and preliminary achievements of the application ability-oriented college English education reform in the past six years that serves students’ learning needs and career development as well as the university’s talents cultivation. The Impact of MOOCs on College English Reform in Mainland China

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are internationally accepted as a popular online learning, its introduction into Mainland China provides an opportunity for College English education reform, which is on progress since 2007. This article attempts to draw a picture of College English teaching reform under the influence of MOOCs by adopting documentary research method through analyzing all the essays about College English teaching under the wave of MOOCs in CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure) according to their research contents. The data collected shows that theoretically College English teaching could be reformed by taking the form of MOOCs in the courses of English for general purposes (EGP), English for general education (EGE), and English for specific purposes (ESP). It seems that during the reform teaching models and student-teacher relationship are altered by the MOOCs environment. Additionally, College English courses on several MOOCs platforms are analyzed, they further prove the practical College English courses done on MOOCs platforms. This paper seems to throw light on a general overview of College English teaching in Mainland China for English teachers and researchers and propose further improvement for college English teaching reform.

The College English Teaching Reform Based on MOOC

Nowadays the College English course in China is in the deep blue sea which arouses the deep concerns from all walks of life in the society including the students, teaching experts and the English teachers. Based on the MOOC appearing three years ago, the College English class can be more diverse and beneficial by the means of providing the students with the teaching videos, having the opportunities to discuss the problems with teachers and other students before the class, and finishing the tasks assigned cooperatively with others to further their learning. The College English Reform based on MOOC can be perfected through solving some practical problems that need exploring in the future.

A Study of College English Follow-up Module Teaching from the Perspective of Needs Analysis

Needs analysis plays an essential role in designing courses and provides the basis for choosing teaching objectives, teaching content, textbooks, teaching methods and evaluating teaching effects. The study is based on a questionnaire survey among 775 non-English undergraduate majors who have passed CET4 or CET6 test with the help of needs analysis and module teaching theories. It obtains information about students' needs for follow-up college English courses in the aspects of their purposes of learning English, the teaching content and modes of follow-up courses and the like. On the basis of the analysis of the survey, the study summarizes the current problems existing in the follow-up module teaching, and then puts forward a tentative framework for needs collection and response，teaching material resources, teaching time, examinations and evaluation, and extracurricular activities of College English follow-up module teaching courses, in order to provide some useful reference for college English reform nationwide.

A study of implementation of national language policies in a local higher institution: a case study from China

Background College English syllabi have been a guide for English teaching in China for decades. In order to explore how the 2007 version of the College English Curriculum Requirement can succeed in local implementation, this case study chose Binzhou Medical University as a participant institution to find out the influential factors of the implementation of national language policies.Case presentation Binzhou Medical University implemented the College English Curriculum Requirements of 2004 and 2007 versions gradually in terms of course setting. Differentiating Instruction was conducted in 2005 and improved in 2012. It was warmly welcomed by students. The diversity of English courses was advocated in 2007, and the management of the courses was enhanced in 2012. The practices tended to satisfy students’ continuous change of academic interests. English for Specific Purpose instruction was introduced in 2012, but further improvements were required. Internet-based teaching system was introduced in 2014 and micro-lessons were strongly advocated in 2015. The effects remained to be seen in the future.ConclusionsSeveral factors influenced the College English reform. First, the ideology of national and local administrations was a key factor for the College English reform. Second, professional identity of the teachers affected the development of the course setting. Third, globalization attracted attention to students’ communication competence and provided new ways for training teachers. The findings of this article can be valuable references for drawing up an updated syllabus.

Research on the Teaching Model of College English Autonomous Learning in the Environment of Internet

With the deep application of Internet in the field of college English reform, a new teaching model of college English autonomous learning in the Internet is applied in this study. The new teaching model emphasizes the application of cognitive strategy and monitoring strategy when the English autonomous learning is conducted online and offline. The different notions and different performances of students between new teaching model and traditional model are discussed in this paper.

Study of College English Teacher Participation in Curricular Reform

Teachers play a decisive role in any curricular reform. College English reform has been implemented for many years.How do the majority of the teachers participate in the reform? Based upon the self-compiled scale of universityteacher participation in curricular reform, this study tries to describe a panorama of teacher participation. Byemploying the methods of comparing the values of mean, mode, SD and frequencies of particular value, the authorfinds that college English teachers did not participate into the reform actively. By using the analysis of independentsample T test and ANOVAs, the author finds that there are many significant differences among factors as gender, age,types of universities and districts.

Review on “Blended Learning” in Language Teaching

<p>As blended learning enters the college English reform in China, more and more researchers have made attempts to explore the effects of blended learning context. This paper intends to make an overview of application of it in English teaching in China by reviewing 20 papers published in core journals, with an aim to get a picture of the current situation of blended learning research and application in Chinese context. Thus reasonable suggestions are offered for appropriate approaches to more fully fulfill the role of blended learning in English teaching modernization in China.</p>

Content-based language teaching and further college English reform in TCM universities

English for Academic Purpose (EAP), putting more emphasis on cultivating students' ability in academic study, is an integral part of College English reform, This paper aims to explore how to carry out college English reform with the focus on EAP in universities of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), proposing practical approaches under the guidance of Content-based Language Teaching (CBLT). The suggestions include further implementation of EAP, the coherence of the General English courses, the construction of college English course system, the establishment of multiple as-sessment system and the development of suitable teaching material. The purpose is to advance the ap-plication and specialty of teaching content and make College English teaching serve TCM students' needs of academic studies and future careers more effectively. The Application Study of Note-taking of Interpreting in College English Course

Based on some introductions about the interpretive note-taking, this essay tries to probe into the application study of note-taking to solve some existed problems in the College English Course. The author believes that the college English reform is far from satisfactory when it is only conducted on the reform of textbooks, media appliance improvement or changes of learning periods. The teacher should adopt new effective ways to make the students really involved in the class and actually get improved in their comprehensive English capacity.

College English Reform in the Context of Globalization A Case in Wuhan University

English has been playing the role of world language for it is the most important information carrier and global business language. Faced with challenges from the new century and higher professional and academic demands from students, College English in China should go beyond the traditional teaching mode and course designing as the situation changes. Cooperative Learning: An Effective Approach to College English Learning

Cooperative Learning (or Collaborative Learning), has become one of mainstream learning strategies in the world. The Application of CALL Mode Based on Information Technology

With the rapid development of computer technology and network, computer, as an assistant means of teaching, finds a broad use of foreign language instruction. In particular, it is worth mentioning that computer assisted language learning (CALL), as a newly booming science, plays an increasingly important role in language teaching and learning and has become an important solution to the current education problems encountered in the process. However, CALL can only play a supporting role in foreign language teaching. In the foreign language teaching with CALL,it is proper to develop the advantages of advanced technology,and meanwhile to deny the traditional teaching mode and inappropriate teaching methods. Therefore, combined with the reality, this paper makes an argument that in the process of teaching, we must keep in the reasonable application of CALL to avoid the negative effects of abusing it while actively and prudently promote the reform of college English to cultivate interdisciplinary talents in the new century.

College English Test: To Be Abolished or To Be Polished

College English Test (CET) is a national standardized achievement test in mainland China. As a test with government backing, its passing rate has been used as one important index to evaluate higher institutions’ teaching quality, which has pushed institutions to improve the teaching facilities and enhance quality of teaching staff for College English. It is believed that this has ever promoted the rapid growth of undergraduates’ English level and accumulated knowledge for test development. Meanwhile Chinese society has imposed upon CET extra value, which makes it a high-stakes test and its negative impacts are emerging. It has resulted in test-oriented education and become a hurdle to College English reform. In addition its validity and fairness are constantly being challenged. After carefully balancing its positive and negative backwash to College English teaching and learning, I propose that a substantial reform of the present CET might be a feasible solution. Government’s withdraw of its administrative role from CET and a change from achievement to proficiency test should be the orientation of reform. Furthermore, the validity of the test needs to be further improved.

The Feasibility Study of Interpretive Theories in the College English Course—Exemplified with Qingdao University of Science and Technology

The current College English Course has to face many difficulties, such as the low efficiency and the student’s reluctance to learn, many universities have attempted to reform it, and some effects begin to show. The author is trying to analyze the feasibility to recommend the interpretive training methods into College English Class from the following three aspects: the need of college English reform, the learning desire of non-English major undergraduates and the demand of CET 4 and CET 6.

The Integration of Information Technology into Language Teaching

the construction of college English classroom is one of the orientations of current college English teaching reform. This thesis discusses the integration of information technology into college English curriculum from the ecological perspective so as to offer some advice for the practice of college English reform.

Exploration of College English Reform

International cultural communication and trade exchange between China and foreign countries have greatly increased with China theses years. Requirement of the employees who are able to carry out the international communication of science and technology in English increases as well. However, college English teaching and learning can not meet the need completely because of the obstacles in traditional teaching. Investigating the use of English vocabulary learning strategies in web-based and multimedia learning environments

One of the difficulties in English language teaching and learning is vocabulary acquisition, to which vocabulary learning strategies (VLS) have been proved of vital importance. Since the college English education reform, the web-based and multimedia learning environment has replaced the traditional one and calls for autonomous learners equipped with learning strategies more urgently. This study took a university in China as an example to explore the vocabulary-specific strategy using and teaching in the new environment. The aim of the research is to gain insightful experience so as to benefit current English vocabulary teaching and learning at the university level.
