Johannes Filiczki's 1614 book of poetry published in Basel

AbstractThe study summarizes the 1614 Basel volume of János Filiczki, who was referred to as the “Hungarian Ovid” or the “Hungarian Martial”. The volume is significant for Hungarian literary history because it is a collection of occasional poems – which were fashionable at the time – edited by the author himself. No other similar work is known from that era in Hungary. The summary thematically arranges the poems in the 1614 volume and, as much as the length allows, attempts to touch upon their content. The more interesting poems are analyzed in detail, providing references to both ancient and contemporary sources.

WORLD LITERATURE IN HUNGARIAN TRANSLATION ANTHOLOGIES IN SLOVAKIA

The study draws on minor literature theory and cultural theory of literary translation. As a case study, it analyses Olivér Rácz’s Csillagsugárzás (1978), an anthology of translations from world literature into Hungarian in Slovakia, and also compares it with the volumes by László Cselényi (1986) and Árpád Tőzsér (2002). In Hungarian literature, the anthologies compiled during the modernist period can be attributed mainly to the oeuvre of the poets who grouped around the literary journal Nyugat, and like the journal, these anthologies are linked to Western literature, complemented by the canon of classical antique literature. This initial tendency changed radically, especially after the Second World War, when the ruling ideology expected the literature of the socialist bloc to be represented. The collection of poems under analysis draws on this tradition but also seeks to incorporate Slovak and Czech literature into the world literary canon, given its minority position, while also making use of ideological and manipulative gestures.

An Analysis of English Translation of The Book of Poetry from the Perspective of Feminist Translation Theory

The Book of Poetry is the earliest collection of poems in China, reflecting the ancient social life of 2,500 to 3,000 years ago, which is a microcosm of the society at that time, and also an important work for the study of female consciousness in the years during the Book of Poetry. Feminist translation theory is the combination of translation theory and culture, which emphasizes the translator’s intervention in the text, which is of great significance to the text translation with bright feminist color. This paper takes the translated texts of Xu Yuanchong and James Legge as the research object, makes a comparison between the two English versions of the Book of Poetry under the guidance of feminist translation theory, analyzes the embodiment of feminist consciousness in the two versions, for the purpose of exploring how feminist translators’ self-consciousness plays a specific role in translation practice, and how the two translators use the strategies in the theory to intervene the translations.

Queering Authoritarianism in Uganda: Dissident Sexualities and Tropical African [anti]-Aesthetics in Stella Nyanzi’s No Roses from my Mouth

In this article, I argue that queering female sexualities as ‘dissident sexualities’ Stella Nyanzi in her collection of prison poems, No Roses from My Mouth (2020), harnesses the aesthetics of radical rudeness (insults) through expressions of humor, innuendo, and anecdote grounded in the Baganda cultural repertoire, to critique President Yoweri Museveni’s authoritarian regime in Uganda. Her poetry draws attention to queer sexualities grounded in stylistics of dissent. Humor in the prison poems allows Nyanzi to develop an audacity that alludes to the authenticity of her queer consciousness. To this end, the article teases out how radical rude poetics, a corollary of tropical [anti]-aesthetics, affords Nyanzi a literary platform to manipulate pejorative imagery, libidinous metaphors, subversive phrases, and lewd expressions entrenched in humor as political protest. More evocatively, the article asserts that within the context of tropicality, radical rudeness as pan-Africa’s anti-aesthetic response to the Western (English) culture of politeness is focused upon in No Roses from My Mouth as a literary fuse that expands tropical aesthetic’s critique of colonialism/postcolonialism in Africa to poetically confront authoritarianism in Uganda.

Abstract This paper examines the persistent evolution of themes and motifs in Franz Hodjak‘s poetry since his literary beginnings, focusing on his latest collection of poems. Hodjak‘s recent works delve into familiar themes such as freedom, existential emptiness, and the absence-defined concepts of identity, homeland, illusions, and freedom. Additionally, these poems address core life aspects like transience, farewell, hope, love, grief, dreams, and happiness. While these themes echo in his earlier works, Hodjak‘s unflinching perspective unveils the interconnectedness and impermanence of the world. The focus of this analysis lies in the enduring trust in language that permeates Hodjak‘s work.

КАРАКАЛПАКСКО-ТАТАРСКИЕ ПЕРЕВОДЫ – КУЛЬТУРНЫЕ СВЯЗИ ДВУХ НАРОДОВ

This article examines the cultural and literary ties between the two Turkic peoples – the Karakalpak and Tatar languages. The translation of the work from one language to another is analyzed. The role and contribution of translations of scientists and poets is noted. The famous Karakalpak national poet I. Yusupov translated the poems of the Tatar poet G. Tukai from Tatar into Karakalpak. The article notes the great work of I. Yusupov on the translation and preparation of a collection of poems by G. Tukai and other poets of the Tatar people. At the same time, Professor of Kazan Federal University H. Minnegulov, in his articles about I. Yusupov and other Karakalpak scientists, notes their merits in spreading the work of G. Tukai among other Turkic languages. And he included these articles in the encyclopedia of G. Tukai. The article also focuses on the work of poet and educator S. Majitov, a Tatar by nationality, who lived in Karakalpakstan and participated in the creation of textbooks on the Karakalpak language. In the 20s of the twentieth century, he created the first textbooks for Karakalpak schools, engaged in education, worked and directed a school in the Kungrad district. He is also a poet, writer and playwright. He wrote his works in the Karakalpak language. He actively participated in the creation of the Karakalpak alphabet and orthography. The article notes the merits of Tatar and Karakalpak scientists and poets who put a bridge on international relations and cooperation in the field of philology.

Difficulties in Translating Hyperboles from Arabic Poems into English Texts

The study focuses on exploring the difficulties faced the translators during the translation of hyperboles in Arabic literary text caused by the ambiguity in the source text. The study aims to look for the strategies mostly used by M.A graduates in translating hyperboles from Arabic literary text into English, as well as surveying the samples being given to the M.A graduates to look for the reason of ambiguity in translating them. To fulfill the aims of this research, the study hypothesizes that the use of communicative or literal translation will convey the meaning from into TLT accurately and clearly, or using the Vinay and Darbelenet translation strategies will produce the same effect of SLT on TLT and whether the hyperbole in Arabic literary text is translatable despite the social, stylistic or structural differences in literary text. To prove the hypotheses, the procedures start with the researcher collecting 10 samples and giving them to 10 M.A graduates for the 2022-2023 academic year, followed by analyzing the samples according to the Vinay and Darbelenet translation model, the samples were chosen from the poem collection of Badr Shakir Al-Sayyab “Rain Song””انشودة المطر”, specifically from the two poems “قافلة الضياع” and “غريب على الخليج”, and given to be translated into English by the M.A graduates, then discussing the results of the collected data. The study concludes that the translation of hyperboles from Arabic literary texts into English text can be challenging due to the different ways they are used, additionally hyperboles can have multiple interpretations which is the result of the context they are used in, as well as that hyperboles in Arabic literary text are also affected by the difference in culture and social background and other factors.

AbstractThe new and first complete edition of the works of Allan Ramsay (1684–1758) in six volumes is beginning to draw renewed attention towards this important poet. This essay examines one of the key unexamined puzzles of his career: how an Edinburgh wigmaker apparently without any advantage of birth and connexions succeeded in gathering an enormously distinguished subscription list — including nearly sixty peers and eight dukes — for his first key collection of poems. The answer lies both in the powerful and interlocking networks which Ramsay had inherited, cultivated, or adopted and in the particular culture and political moment in post‐Union Edinburgh in which he came to maturity. Ramsay's key network groups are discussed under four headings: Jacobites, Friends and Clubs, local dignitaries, family links, professionals, and merchants; patronage; and wider artistic networks.

The Semiotics of Place in Saudi Women’s Poetry: Ashjan Hindi as a Model

This research delves into the artistic structures and semiotic connotations of place in the poetry of Ashjan Hindi. In her poetry, place is not merely a tangible geographical patch, but rather it is rich with symbolic meanings and connotations that reflect the poet's philosophical vision of her surroundings. Therefore, it became necessary to explore the semiotic perspectives of place through analysis and interpretation. The research adopted a semiotic approach to investigate the artistic structures of place in Ashjan Hindi's poetry, drawing on the foundational concepts of the metaphorical discourse according to Paul Ricoeur in his book "The Vivid Metaphor," which is rooted in the linguistic theory formulated by Emile Benveniste. The research relies on exploring the semiotics of place in the Collection of Poems, drawing on the procedural concepts of imagination as articulated by the researcher Jilbert Durand in his book "The Anthropological Structures of the Imaginary." It is based on the foundational concepts of this theory, especially the terms of patterns, original models, and symbols, in analyzing the connotations of places in the Collection of Poems.

The Influence of Hashadev Madawan's Sijokavyas on Sanskrit Literature

Since ancient times, Sanskrit poetry has been world-famous for its structure, theme, rasa, characters, etc. It can be seen that the structure of modern Sanskrit poetry is completely different from this traditional form. Because of the greatness of ancient Sanskrit poetry, it was transferred to other languages and literature. But today, Sanskrit poetry tends to adopt the literary styles of other languages and its literature. Various literary styles and writing styles from all over the world have found their way into the Sanskrit language today. As such, Sijo poems are a type of poetry that has gained acceptance in the field of modern Sanskrit poetry. It is a style of poetry that exists in South Korea. It is a poetic style that completely records the things to be said in three lines, different from the four-line sloka system of Sanskrit poetry. This article depicts some Sijo poems mentioned in a book, named Shirisha Pushpeshu Vrishtibindavaha, a collection of poems by Dr. Harshadev Madhavan, who is one of the leading modern Sanskrit poets. It is clear from this study that Sijo, Haiko, Tan, and other forms were introduced in Sanskrit poetry and these types of literary forms are suitable for Sanskrit language and literature.

Contemporary Chinese poetry in English translation: an interview with Nick Admussen

ABSTRACT Nick Admussen is an associate professor of Chinese literature at Asian Studies Department, Cornell University, where his research and translation focus on contemporary Chinese poetry. He is an acclaimed poetry scholar and translator as well as a prolific essayist and poet. In this interview, which took place via email in April – May 2024, Admussen reviews his career path and shares his observations about the study, translation and reception of contemporary Chinese poetry in the West. The conversation focuses on such intriguing topics as Lu Xun’s prose poem collection Yecao野草in English translation, the translating, publishing, and reception of Floral Mutter: Selected Poetry of Ya Shi, Admussen’s theorization about translating contemporary Chinese poetry into English, and the status quo of this Chinese genre in English translation. Informative, insightful, and sometimes inquisitive, it should be of much interest to those pursuing Chinese literature studies and literary translation studies.

쉼보르스카의 미공개 초기작에 나타난 주요 모티브 연구

Wisława Szymborska, winner of the 1996 Nobel Prize in Literature, is a poet who perceives the true essence of objects through a penetrating insight, based on the mind’s eye. She established a unique style as a poet, characterized by concise yet clear language that encapsulated contemplation and introspection. Published in 2014 The Black Songs (Czarna Piosenka) is a collection of unpublished poems from the poet's youth. After her death, a bundle of manuscripts was found in a drawer, containing her earliest works from her youth. The restoration of this collection fills the seven-year gap between her debut in 1945 and the publication of her first book of poetry in 1952. It has been also revealed why Szymborska’s poems about World War II, despite her belonging to the “the War Generation,” were scarcely published until now. This paper examines the main motifs, images and themes of Szymborska’s unpublished early works, focusing on the works from The Black Songs and analyzes their connections to her later poems.

КЫТАЙ КЫРГЫЗ АКЫНДАРЫНЫН АЛГАЧКЫ ЫРЛАР ЖЫЙНАГЫ

The actuality of the article differs from the fact that it focuses on the creative workshop of 22 poets-writers included in the collection of poems "Kerme Too", which gave a message of Chinese Kyrgyz literature in Kyrgyzstan in the 60s, and reviews their issues, ideological- artistic features, and thematic directions in a consistent and chronological direction. The said collection was prepared for publication in the city of Urumqi by the Xinjiang People's Press in 1962 on behalf of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous District Branch of the Jungo Writers' Society. Before the establishment of the "Shinjan People's Press" in the late 1950s, local Kyrgyz published in Uyghur and Kazakh languages, and only in the early 1960s when publishing houses in their native language were established, it was first recognized by readers as a collection of poems, and during the 1960s, it informed the poetry of Kyrgyz literature. For the purpose of the study, we will focus on the life and creative pursuits of 22 poets and writers, observe the different characteristics of each of them, the artistic values that attract the readers in the lines corresponding to the poem, the shortcomings and successes encountered, and we will talk about the representatives who first contributed to Kyrgyz poetry as a collection. As a methodological guide, the creative ways of poets-writers, their poems of different content, and theoretical works were included in the collection of poems "Kerme Too". For this purpose, the results of the review will provide literary researchers in Kyrgyzstan with consistent information about the period of Kyrgyz literature in China in the 60s, including the period when poetry was first formed.

PUBLICISTIC MEANING OF THE REVIEW BY T. SYDYKBEKOV ON THE POETIC COLLECTION “MAKHABAT”

Publicism is one of the areas in Kyrgyz literary criticism, which has not often become the object of scientific research. Consequently, it can be said that opinions about its variety, comprehensiveness, genres, artistry, and the functions it performs have practically not yet been expressed. Considered from this angle, there are very few special studies on the journalism of individual writers. Therefore, in this article, by referring to the journalistic works of the writer Tugelbay Sydykbekov, an attempt is made to contribute to the solution of this urgent problem. T. Sydykbekov in his work addressed all journalistic genres, exerting his influence on society through them. Among them, in the first place, are his reviews, which are one of the genres of journalism, which in their time caused a lot of discussions and still do not lose their significance. At the same time, the writer's reviews are very diverse (on a work of art, on scientific works, on dictionaries, films, and much more). The article discusses the review written on the collection of poems by A. Osmonov “Makhabat” and the influence it had on the author. The validity of this review is considered in comparison with the review article of the poet M. Alybaev "Senseless Love" to the same collection.

Poetry as Gift to Articulate Oppression Across Transdisciplinary Health Scholarship

Those of us on the 'fringes' of society find ourselves there because of crises that happen in our communities—housing crises, colonization, and many more crises that intersect to make up our human condition. What happens now on the 'fringes' of society directly connects to past and on-going legacies of oppression in systems of health because such systems marginalize folks as part of systemic strategic plans. It is important to trace and articulate these historical and on-going legacies of violence so that we can build something more useful. This manuscript weaves liberatory social theory throughout a collection of poems on class struggle and racial oppression for movement toward just futures. This collection of poems traverses disciplinary boundaries and uses poetry as a buffer against being burned down for people engaged in the work of liberation and justice with desire to confront legacies of colonialism and enslavement in our everyday practice.

On the margins of Beirut’s cultural modernism: aesthetics and politics in the inter-artistic works of Laure Ghorayeb

ABSTRACT Known for her black-and-white miniatures embedded with Arabic writing, Laure Ghorayeb is a fascinating if understudied figure of Beirut’s cultural modernism. Her work occupied a liminal position between French and Arabic and intersected literature and visual art. This article argues that it is precisely this marginality, manifested in Ghorayeb’s multifaceted cultural identity, that allowed her to move deftly across mediums, practices, languages, and genres, resulting in a uniquely inter-semiotic oeuvre. Close reading selections from her collections of poems, Noir … les bleus (Black … the Blues), 1960 and prose, Iklīl shawk ḥawla qadamayhi (A Crown of Thorns Around His Feet), 1965, in relation to her civil war drawings Témoignages (Testimonies), 1985, this article reveals an inter-semiotic exchange on the page. It offers an interdisciplinary rereading of the modern cultural history of Beirut, revealing an interplay between literature and visual art, which allowed Ghorayeb to maneuver between aesthetic experimentation and political engagement at a time when nationalist and ideological divisions were being sown.

In this study, we will shed light on our poet Dhul Rumah in order to introduce him and his diwan; to be useful for those who do not know him, and to be necessary for those who know him, but it is likely that the latter will benefit from other aspects of the study, even in a small amount, in terms of introducing his life, qualities, personality, and his story with his two lovers: Mayyah and Khar’qaa, and how he died Then the study will shed light on his diwan and its place among the Arabic poetry books. The study posits questions, including: Who is the poet Dhul-Rumah? Where did his class fall among the classes of Umayyad poets? What poetic purposes did the poet explore most? What is the status of his collection of poems? The problem of the study lies in the lack of publications that described the personality of this great poet and his collections. The study attempted to adopt a descriptive, inductive approach in monitoring its information.

marriage is the process of binding sacred promises between men and women. Marriage is a sacred event through which several steps pass. The steps in the wedding are referred to as the wedding procession. Human feelings can be represented through verses of poetry, stories in novels, lyrics in songs, and conversations in films. Literary works are able to express all human problems and feelings. The type of research used is qualitative descriptive research using the method of Comparative Literature. The data source used is a collection of poems by W.S Rendra includes poems 'invitation’,' Song Of The Angels’, and 'Kakawin Kawin' in the book four collections of poems. These three works were chosen because they have a connection to the wedding procession. Research techniques used are data collection, data analysis, and data inference. Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that there is a wedding procession represented through the poem ’invitation’,’Song Of The Angels’, and ’Kakawin Kawin’. In the poem 'invitation ’and’ Song Of The Angels', both set in a church, and are going through the process of marriage. Meanwhile, the poem 'Kakawin Kawin' is set in the House of the late bride. The difference lies in different situations but each poem represents the wedding procession differently.
