Extending high quality health information to non-government organisations across the Northern Territory: experiences of NT Health Library Services

This paper discusses NT Health Library Services’ initiative to provide resources and services to health professionals who work for non-government organisations across the Territory. In 2009, Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) were established. Since then a website has been created specifically for these MOU members and a recent renewal and upgrade project ensured the agreements were updated and the website security standards were being met. With vendor permission the library currently offers access to the following: eight research databases, two clinical decision support tools, one medication database and five electronic book and journal collections. Marketing has begun to increase awareness among these external clients.

Measuring Usage: A Comprehensive Analysis of a Social Work Journal Collection

This study examines what can be learned about a library’s electronic social work journal collection from usage statistics, survey data, faculty publications, and an examination of open access (OA) availability. A collections analysis was completed using data from two sources: a custom report by 1Science and results of a faculty survey on top journals for teaching. After creating a list of journals important to social work, top journals were identified by article downloads, faculty-authored publications, and references to faculty-authored papers. A publications analysis using faculty websites and author searches in Web of Science was also completed, to provide local, contextual data. SHERPA/RoMEO was used to determine the journals’ OA level and archiving policy. Library coverage for the journals was also included in the analysis. Results show that the McGill University Library has access to almost all of the journals identified as important to social work. Nearly one-third of publications authored by the McGill University School of Social Work since 2006 are OA, and more than half of the faculty in the school have at least one article published in an OA journal. While this is a good start for librarians who want to help faculty and students understand OA publishing and access, there is room for outreach in this area. While these results will aid librarians supporting faculty, students, and practitioners in the field of social work, a secondary aim of the study is to demonstrate a method that can be used by librarians undertaking similar analyses in other fields.

Web-Scale Discovery Service in Academic Library Environment

Web-Scale Discovery service is the new buzzword of library service in the current environment. It refers to a group of products that index a wide number of resources in various formats and allows users to search for content in the physical collection, print and electronic journals collections, and other resources from a single search box. It has the capacity to connect the researchers more easily with the vast information repository of the library including both locally and hosted content i.e. physical holdings, digital collection, and local institutional repositories. This article defines the concept of Web-Scale Discovery Service and its features. The author tries to illustrate the evaluation process for implementing Web-Scale Discovery Service. He also outlines some of important steps involved while execution.

Usability Study on Online Database of Undergraduate Students at Higher Institution

In current research environment and needs, the online database becomes one of the main resources in retrieving latest academic information and knowledge. This is due to reason that its synchronization (latest and frequently updated resources) with the on-going research trends and demands. The online database contains a collection of data, text, numerical, graphical, electronic journals, multimedia products and others. Usability of an online database for students may imply on accessing resources for meeting their assignment, project papers and research requirements. In education needs at the higher institution, students have long been using the database to fit in with their study. Nevertheless, little is known from the past works on the students’ online database usability. A survey is conducted on undergraduate students at Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), Malaysia. The aim is to examine the relationships between learnability and efficiency, and usage of the online database among these engineering students. The findings indicate that the UNITEN Library should have an opportunity to improvise their online database with respect to learnability and efficiency factors. The research is carried out through a survey participated with a total of 352 respondents. Findings indicate that, 71.7% used the online database and 28.3% was not. Furthermore, usage relationships were found to be with coefficient \(r=-0.353\) (Learnability) and \(r=-0.382\) (Efficiency). Both of the correlations are significant at 1% significant level. The researcher suggested carrying out a further study to investigate the relationship of learnability, efficiency and inclusive of other factors like the effectiveness of the online database to reflect the usability.

PEMANFAATAN JURNAL ELEKTRONIK SEBAGAI SUMBER REFERENSI DALAM PENULISAN SKRIPSI DI INSTITUT PERTANIAN BOGOR

The research aims to comprehend the knowledge and utilization of electronic journal (Proquest, Science Direct, EBSCOhost, dan Cab Direct) subscribed by library of Institut Pertanian Bogor that have been performed by students as reference source in thesis writing, and obstacles faced while looking for the information. The research applies descriptive research with quantitative approach. Based on the data acquired: (1) The students’ knowledge toward electronic journal subscribed is adequately high. 87,9% students realize existence of electronic journal service, 81,8% reference resource uses electronic media, and 49,5% utilizes electronic journal; (2) The electronic journal utilization level is 86,2% which utilizes electronic journal. Electronic journal utilization level as reference material is relatively high, because from 86,2% students which utilize electronic journal, 40% utilizes it 2-3 times in a month. 34,7% utilizes electronic journal with duration less than 2 hours, with downloading electronic journal collection searched, 34,7% uses 2 articles as reference material for thesis; (3) Obstacles in utilizing electronic journal are 52% caused by electronic journal collection mostly using English, and searched collection are not available. Although there are some difficulties, they keep utilize the electronic journal.

PENGEMBANGAN KOLEKSI JURNAL ELEKTRONIK DI PUSAT LAYANAN PUSTAKA UNIVERSITAS TERBUKA (PUSLATA UT)

This research aims to see the development of the electronic journal collection at Puslata UT. This research used qualitative approach with descriptive method. Reviews these results indicate that Puslata UT has run a series of activities for the development of the electronic journal collection, but in fact the use of electronic journals by the academic society is very low. It happened because some temporary policies were not maximized and less inappropriate to fulfill information needs of academic society. Electronic journal more needed for the accreditation process and the study by researcher at UT center. The results of this research shows that PUSLATAUT should make a written policy or guidelines of the development of the electronic journal collection, and create a strategic plan so that electronic journals can reach some academic societies in some areas.

Using an electronic journal availability study to measure access to electronic journals by academics and researchers in the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Zimbabwe

This article examines the use of an electronic journal availability study as a means of measuring access to subscribed journal collections that are needed by faculty members for their teaching and research. As in other disciplines, academics in agriculture are dependent on articles in electronic journals to obtain recent information and to build upon their own research. Empirical evidence is needed to select specific databases, to justify subscriptions, and to meet the research needs of academics. This article presents findings from an electronic journal availability study, which was used to determine the extent to which electronic journal collections met teaching and research needs at the University of Zimbabwe. The study took place between September 2013 and February 2014. A core journal titles list, simulating faculty’s research needs, was retrieved from a library’s electronic journals databases to establish the electronic journals availability rate: a measurement of the availability of the journals from the library’s electronic collections. This study showed an 85.5% availability rate across local collections, with the following results for the donated journal schemes: 63% in Access to Global Research in Africa (AGORA); 47% in Access to Research for Development (ARDI); 51% in Health Internet Access to Research Initiative (HINARI), and 53.5% in Online Access to Research in the Environment (OARE). This electronic journal availability study demonstrates that librarians need continuously to evaluate their collections and to assess whether these meet the needs of their users.

The Electronic Resources Project of the Faculty of Information Studies

The main goal of the Electronic Resources Project is to improve access to our electronic journal collection. From our Web-based search form, users can do Boolean searches of full text, title, author, and other categories on a per-article basis, and then select and retrieve articles from a list of hits. A Systematic Review of the Extent and Measurement of Healthcare Provider Racism

Although considered a key driver of racial disparities in healthcare, relatively little is known about the extent of interpersonal racism perpetrated by healthcare providers, nor is there a good understanding of how best to measure such racism. This paper reviews worldwide evidence (from 1995 onwards) for racism among healthcare providers; as well as comparing existing measurement approaches to emerging best practice, it focuses on the assessment of interpersonal racism, rather than internalized or systemic/institutional racism. The following databases and electronic journal collections were searched for articles published between 1995 and 2012: Medline, CINAHL, PsycInfo, Sociological Abstracts. Included studies were published empirical studies of any design measuring and/or reporting on healthcare provider racism in the English language. Data on study design and objectives; method of measurement, constructs measured, type of tool; study population and healthcare setting; country and language of study; and study outcomes were extracted from each study. The 37 studies included in this review were almost solely conducted in the U.S. and with physicians. Statistically significant evidence of racist beliefs, emotions or practices among healthcare providers in relation to minority groups was evident in 26 of these studies. Although a number of measurement approaches were utilized, a limited range of constructs was assessed. Despite burgeoning interest in racism as a contributor to racial disparities in healthcare, we still know little about the extent of healthcare provider racism or how best to measure it. Studies using more sophisticated approaches to assess healthcare provider racism are required to inform interventions aimed at reducing racial disparities in health.

More Than a Number: Unexpected Benefits of Return on Investment Analysis

In 2010–2011, University of Colorado (CU) librarians implemented a multi-campus pilot study to measure the institutional value of library resources used by faculty in their research. The study incorporated quantitative methods including return on investment (ROI), cost benefit analysis (CBA), and citation analysis of journal articles published by faculty; and qualitative methodologies such as in-person interviews with faculty. The study resulted in a CU ROI model that can be used to measure faculty perceptions of value and the economic benefits of electronic journal collections for faculty research in terms of ROI. The CU ROI methodology provides outcomes beyond a single ROI number and led to unexpected benefits for informing collection development decisions and strategies.

Still Bound for Disappointment? Another Look at Faculty and Library Journal Collections

Objective – To examine why faculty members at Columbia University are dissatisfied with the library’s journal collections and to follow up on a previous study that found negative perceptions of journal collections among faculty at Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member institutions in general.
 
 Methods – In 2006, Jim Self of the University of Virginia published the results of an analysis of LibQUAL+® survey data for ARL member libraries, focusing on faculty perceptions of journal collections as measured by LibQUAL+® item IC-8: “print and/or electronic journal collections I require for my work.” The current analysis includes data from 21 ARL libraries participating in the LibQUAL+® survey from 2006 through 2009. Notebooks for each library were accessed and reviewed for the Information Control and overall satisfaction scores. At Columbia, the results were used to identify departments with negative adequacy gaps for the IC-8 item. Follow-up phone interviews were conducted with 24 faculty members in these departments, focusing on their minimum expectation for journal collections, their desired expectations, and preferences for print or electronic journals.
 
 Results – Analysis of the 2009 LibQUAL+® scores shows that faculty across ARL libraries remain dissatisfied with journal collections. None of the libraries achieved a positive adequacy gap, in which the perceived level of service exceeded minimum expectations. There was no significant change in the adequacy gap for the IC-8 item since 2006, and satisfaction relative to expectations remained consistent, showing neither improvement nor decline. While most of the faculty members interviewed at Columbia stated that the journal collections met their minimum expectations, 15 of 24 reported that the library did not meet their desired level of service in this area. Key issues identified in the interviews included insufficient support from library staff and systems regarding journal acquisition and use, the need for work-arounds for accessing needed journals, problems with search and online access, collection gaps, insufficient backfile coverage, and the desire for a discipline-specific “quick list” to provide access to important journals.
 
 Conclusion – The issue of satisfaction with journal collections is complex, and faculty members have little tolerance for faulty systems. The evolution of the electronic journal collections and the inherent access challenges will continue to play a critical role in faculty satisfaction as libraries strive to provide ever-better service.

An Introduction to Web Scale Discovery Systems

This article explores the basic principles of web-scale discovery systems and how they are being implemented in libraries. “Web scale discovery” refers to a class of products that index a vast number of resources in a wide variety formats and allow users to search for content in the physical collection, print and electronic journal collections, and other resources from a single search box. Search results are displayed in a manner similar to Internet searches, in a relevance ranked list with links to online content. The advantages and disadvantages of these systems are discussed, and a list of popular discovery products is provided. A list of library websites with discovery systems currently implemented is also provided.

The authors would like to thank Watson (2011) for his insightful remarks on our paper (Oermann et al. 2010). Watson (2011) highlights two relevant issues from our research. The first issue is that of the tension between citation analysis and author impact. Of the two, citation analysis has the longest history and appears more widely accepted. Author impact, the h-index, is still developing. The second issue that Watson identifies involves citation patterns, which is getting increased attention in the literature. Our citation analysis examined the assimilation of selected nursing research articles into clinical literature. The articles selected for analysis were published between 1990–2000 and tracked from publication to 2009. During this period, journals moved from print only to print and electronic format. A 2010 study examined how electronic journal collections were reflected in citation patterns of authors in dentistry, nursing and pharmacy at a large urban university (De Groote & Barrett 2010). From 1996–2008, the number of citations to articles in print only journals in nursing decreased while the number of citations to papers available online increased. The authors suggested improved linking of full text articles directly into electronic databases possibly contributed to the increase. Based on De Groote and Barrett’s study, nursing faculty are citing papers published online more than those published only in print. In response to Watson (2011), we reanalysed the citations in our study to determine whether there was an increase in the number of citations after the journals began publishing in both print and electronic formats. The number of citations and time in years over the periods when the journals were available in print only and both print and electronic formats were analysed. Poisson regression was used to model numbers of citations as they are counts while converting them to citation rates per year (using the appropriate offset variable). Generalised estimating equations (GEE) techniques were used to model the correlation for an article’s citation rate before and after its journal began publishing papers electronically as well as in print. The GEE estimated intra-article correlation was high at 0·65, indicating that an article’s print citation rate was highly correlated with its print plus electronic citation rate. The mean citation rate increased significantly (p = 0·011) from its estimated print only value of 1·5 citations per year to its print plus electronic citation rate of 2·4 citations per year. Another factor influencing electronic access is the linking of electronic articles to databases. Some database vendors negotiate directly with publishers to create links. For example, in 1995, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) began providing direct full text links to selected journals. There are currently over 700 linked journals. Another option, software such as Serials Solutions OpenURL linking, goes beyond a single database to include linking in all databases subscribed to by the library or institution. While there are many reasons authors cite other studies, we suggest that electronic access to articles influences citation patterns. This area deserves more analysis.

The Relationship between Searches Performed in Online Databases and the Number of Full-Text Articles Accessed: Measuring the Interaction between Database and E-Journal Collections

The purpose of this paper is to report the results of a quantitative analysis exploring the interaction and relationship between the online database and electronic journal collections at the J. N. Desmarais Library of Laurentian University. A very strong relationship exists between the number of searches and the size of the online database collection where the larger a database collection, the greater its usage. Another very strong relationship was observed between the number of searches and the number of articles downloaded. The more searches that were performed on the database collection, the more the e-journal collection was utilized.

Cross Country Comparison of Scholarly E-Reading Patterns in Australia, Finland, and the United States

Surveys of academic staff in Australia, Finland, and the United States from 2004–2007 reveal reading patterns of e-articles by academics that can be used to measure the purpose and value of e-reading and to demonstrate the value of library-provided electronic journal collections. Results can also be used to compare differences across subject discipline, age, and national boundaries, and how the decisions that libraries make influence reading patterns. The surveys used a variation of the critical incident technique to focus on the last e-article read, whether from the library collection or from elsewhere. Readings from e-journals and articles provided by libraries were more often for the purpose of research than were readings from other sources; were rated as highly valuable to that purpose; and have many reported values, including stimulating new ideas. In support of its increasing electronic journal collection, William T. Murray from the University of Georgia Libraries has developed an access verification tool called SEESAU (Serial Experimental Electronic Subscription Access Utilities). This Web interface has utilized UGA's integrated library system and link resolver to coordinate approximately 37,000 access checks since January 2007. A problem resolution system is included as part of SEESAU and functions similarly to a ticketing system. Through use of SEESAU, library staff have not only discovered access problems proactively, but they have also discovered Web site performance issues, title maintenance concerns and corrections that need to be made to their knowledgebase.

If You Build It They Will Come: Experiences with Electronic Journal Usage in a Community Hospital Library

South Pointe Hospital is a community hospital that originally had few electronic resources available. This article describes how the library gradually acquired an electronic journals collection that started with just 2 titles and grew to a list of over 6000 titles including open access publications. The journals' online usage statistics were used to justify and increase the library budget, which enabled the library to purchase more titles as journal infrastructure software. Even though the collection had been created, it must be maintained and promoted; this article briefly discusses the need for education and promotion of the resources.

Development of a new academic digital library: a study of usage data of a core medical electronic journal collection

The current study evaluates the results of a previously reported method for creating a core medical electronic journal collection for a new medical school library, validates the core collection created specifically to meet the needs of the new school, and identifies strategies for making cost-effective e-journal selection decisions. Usage data were extracted for four e-journal packages (Blackwell-Synergy, Cell Press, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, and ScienceDirect). Usage was correlated with weighted point values assigned to a core list of journal titles, and each package was evaluated for relevancy and cost-effectiveness to the Florida State University College of Medicine (FSU COM) population. The results indicated that the development of the core list was a valid method for creating a new twenty-first century, community-based medical school library. Thirty-seven journals are identified for addition to the FSU COM core list based on use by the COM, and areas of overlapping research interests between the university and the COM are identified based on use of specific journals by each population. The collection development approach that evolved at the FSU COM library was useful during the initial stages of identifying and evaluating journal selections and in assessing the relative value of a particular journal package for the FSU COM after the school was established.
