Wind Analysis of Tall Building with Vertical Setback for Different Height & Area Ratio

The Tall building is being used as much as possible, to live, to commercial and to make statue. It will be of all the building different shapes, design and Structure. From this point of view any building having different discontinuity in mass, geometry of Structure and stiffness. This discontinuity impart the irregularities in the structure. The collapse of high rise building due to irregularities like in symmetries of mass, stiffness, height ratio and geometry of structure. To keep this needs for a long time, we must find out the permissible irregularities to get the maximum building strength/ building life. For design of tall building we need to consider wind load. So, the effect of vertically irregularities in the wind analysis performance of structure becomes really important. Now we will study about behavior of high rise building with different vertical setback and Area ratio on different models of moment resisting rigid frame structure with optimum location of shear wall. In this scrutinize, G+30 story rigid frame structure is taken with two different aspect ratio 1:4:9 and 1:1.56:2.25 for different set-back position in the structure. The set-back provided in the structure are Setback at 15&25 story, Setback at 15&20 Story, Setback at 10&25 Story, Setback at 10&15 Story, Setback at 5&20 Story and Setback at 5&15 Story. Story drift, Story Displacement, Base shear Result are revaluated. On the basis of this result best structure to be discover.

Forensic study on the collapse of a high-rise building in Shanghai: 3D centrifuge and numerical modelling

This paper reports a forensic investigation on the unexpected collapse of a 13-storey high-rise residential building in Shanghai soft clay. Prior to the building collapse, a shallow excavation was carried out on one side of the building while a slope was filled on the opposite side. Despite the observed breakage of all the piles in the field, a preliminary forensic numerical analysis adopting a typical undrained shear strength (cu) profile in Shanghai suggests that the piles are very unlikely to break. The surprising contrast has led to this detailed forensic study on the underlying mechanisms for the building collapse, through a site-specific characterisation of the cu profile, three-dimensional centrifuge modelling and numerical back-analysis. Although the typical cu profile in Shanghai increases almost linearly with depth, the clay in this site consists of two major layers with distinctive strength – that is, a relatively soft clay layer (average cu = 23 kPa, thickness = 13·5 m) underlain by a relatively stiff clay layer (average cu = 58 kPa, thickness = 18·2 m). By reproducing this cu profile in the centrifuge test and numerical analysis, the resulting direction of the building collapse and the depths of pile breakage were broadly consistent with those observed in the field. It was found that the surcharge of the fill slope caused the bearing capacity to be exceeded in the upper soft clay layer. This led to the development of a sliding wedge under the surcharge, which extended horizontally (at a depth of 11 m) across the pile foundations to reach the excavation side, and therefore the breakage of the piles. If a typical strength profile in Shanghai (with cu linearly increasing with depth) were adopted, the failure mechanism could be significantly altered from the aforementioned deep slip failure to a shallow passive failure, causing much smaller bending moment in each pile.

Nonlinear analysis on progressive collapse of tall steel composite buildings

Progressive collapse is defined as the expansion of an initial local failure of an element into another element of the structure and ultimately leading to the collapse of the whole structure or a large part of it in a disproportionate way. Three dimensional modeling, using the finite element method was developed and investigated to understand the progressive collapse of high rise buildings with composite steel frames. The nonlinear dynamic analysis examined the behavior of the building under two column removal scenarios. Two different types of lateral resistance systems were selected to be analysis and compared. The buildings included regular and irregular plans. The response of the building was studied in detail, and measures are recommended to reduce progressive collapse in future designs. The results of this study shows that side case removal in moment frame and moment with centrically braced frame systems was more critical and destructive compared with corner case removal. Comparing the models, for the two different lateral resistance systems, the dynamic response of columns were different, but were not remarkable.

Prevention of progressive uncontrolled collapse of a high-rise building

This article deals with the problem of security and resistance of the high-rise unique buildings to progressing collapse. The analysis of the causes of accidents and collapses of buildings and structures is carried out. The features of calculations and verification of structures for progressive destruction are explored. The analysis of researches and updating of norms on emergency prevention is carried out. The ways of solving the problems of buildings structural schemes resistance and structures to progressive collapse are shown. Particular attention is paid to the use of outrigger communication floors to improve the level of building survivability. Examples are reviewed from the high-rise buildings construction practice on the territory of the Russian Federation. Recommendations are given for the development of further research and practical application of measures to increase resistance to the progressive collapse of high-rise buildings.

Details of H-Beam-to-RHS Column Joints with through Diaphragm for Progressive Collapse Prevention

A partial damage caused by an abnormal load could trigger progressive collapse of high rise buildings which may lead to fatal consequences. To meliorate structural robustness, two types of joint with improved connection details—modified bolted connection and retrofitted bolt-weld connection and their corresponding design methods are proposed on the basis of the conventional RHS column joint with through diaphragm. The numerical results indicate that both the modified bolted connection and the retrofitted bolt-weld connection can enhance the vertical deformation capacity of the beam-column assemblages before the force transmission failure at the bottom of connection region, which is conductive to the development of catenary action by axial force in the beams. For that reason, the beam-column assemblages can provide greater vertical carrying capacity and the two improved connection details can be used in designing and transforming structures against progressive collapse.

Research on Numerical Model for Earthquake Induced Progressive Collapse of High-Rise Buildings

Progressive collapse is defined as the collapse of the whole building due to local weak stories or weak zones. In this paper, collapse should theoretically be avoided for any building under any earthquake, it is necessary to study the collapse behavior of buildings to acquire a better understanding of the collapse mechanism and to find efficient methods to prevent it. The collapse process highly depends on the feature of the whole structural system, so numerical simulation becomes a major method to study it. Based on the finite element method, by selecting the appropriate cell death and cell contact algorithm criterion can better simulate the structure collapsed in an earthquake under the continuity of the whole process of destruction, to help understand the causes and mechanism of structural damage. The real buildings are analyzed to study the failure mechanism of the structure. The models proposed are reasonable to study the seismic collapse mechanism of high-rise buildings.

Experimental study and numerical analysis of progressive collapse resistance of composite frames

A partial damage caused by an abnormal load could trigger progressive collapse of high rise buildings which may lead to terrible casualties. However, in the process of column failure, “catenary action” plays an important role in redistributing the internal load and preventing progressive collapses of the structure. Rigid composite joints, thanks to their high strength and good ductility, exert great influence in catenary action. Therefore, an experiment related to a 1/3 scale progressive collapse resistance with the use of rigid composite joints was conducted, and the results of the experiment were analyzed. Based on the experiment results, a FE model was developed and analyzed. This paper describes the experiment, the results analyzed, and the FE model in detail. The experiment showed that the progressive collapse mechanism of composite frame consisted of 6 stages: elastic stage, elastic–plastic stage, arch stage, plastic stage, transient stage and catenary stage. In catenary stage, catenary action evidently enhanced the resistance to the progressive collapse of the frames. The steel–concrete composite frame with rigid connections designed in accordance to current design standards showed a good resistance to progressive collapse. It is also found that horizontal restraining stiffness of the frame exerted great influence on the resistance in catenary stage.
