Preface

Dear Distinguished Authors and Guests, 2024 9th International Conference on Mechanical Structures and Smart Materials (ICMSSM 2024) was held on June 15-16, 2024 in Beijing, China. The conference program covered invited, oral presentation session and poster session from scientists working in similar areas to establish platforms for collaborative research projects in this field. The conference aimed to bring together leaders from mechanical structures and smart materials to exchange and share their experiences, present research results, explore collaborations and to spark new ideas, with the purpose of developing new projects and exploiting new technology in this field. We hope that the conference has resulted in significant contribution to the knowledge on mechanical structures and smart materials. To this end, this book contains the papers presented at ICMSSM 2024. All papers were accepted through a peer-review process conducted by the conference program committee and international reviewers. Finally, we would like to thank all authors and participants of ICMSSM 2024 for their contributions to making this conference a success. Falls among Pediatric Patients Receiving Home Care.

Children with medical complexity (CMC) often require home healthcare services to manage chronic health conditions. Evaluation of home safety is recommended when children transition from hospital to home care, though despite best efforts, safety events, such as falls, still occur. Understanding the prevalence and causal factors of falls in CMC is critical for the development of fall prevention interventions and protocols. This study aims to describe demographics and reasons for falls reported in CMC receiving home healthcare services. A retrospective analysis was performed using data from an incident reporting database from January 2019 to March 2023. Participants included CMC who received home healthcare services from a single institution and had at least one documented fall. A total of 43 falls were experienced by 31 unique participants. The participants were predominantly male (58.1%), White (71.0%), and non-Hispanic/Latino (96.8%), with a median age of 10 years at the time of the fall. Primary diagnoses of CMC with falls included neurological disorders (41.9%), congenital chromosomal abnormalities (25.8%), and oncological conditions (16.1%). The most common reasons for falls were loss of balance (32.6%), unknown factors (19.6%), and trip/slips (17.4%). Half of falls were deemed to be potentially preventable. This study provides valuable insight into falls among CMC receiving home healthcare services and emphasizes the multifactorial nature of fall risks in this population. Understanding demographic characteristics, diagnoses, and causal factors of falls is critical in the development of proactive fall prevention strategies. Responding proactively to mitigate fall risks is an important step in enhancing the safety and quality of life for CMC. Future collaborative research efforts are warranted to validate findings and evaluate potentially successful fall prevention interventions.

2024 3rd International Conference on Advances in Modern Physics Sciences and Engineering Technology (PSET 2024) was held in Wuhan, China during June 29-30, 2024. The PSET 2024 is organized by National Institute of High Mathematics (INdAM), Italy; Complex Engineering Systems (OA Journal Editorial Office) and technically supported by Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; University of Victoria, Canada; Politecnico di Milano, Italy and Rongzhi Sciences and Technology Center, China. The conference program included keynote, oral, and poster presentations from scientists working in similar areas, aiming to establish platforms for collaborative research projects and to explore potential opportunities for international cooperation in the fields of Modern Physics Sciences and Engineering Technology. This year, we received an overwhelming response from the scientific community, with a total of 57 paper submissions. Each submission underwent a rigorous peer-review process, ensuring that only the highest quality research was selected. After careful consideration and evaluation by our esteemed review panel, 21 papers were accepted for presentation at the conference. The selected papers represent a diverse range of topics, reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of modern physics and engineering technology. From quantum state implementation based on topological insulators to cutting-edge advancements in engineering applications, the research presented here pushes the boundaries of current knowledge and opens new avenues for future exploration. We hope that the proceedings of PSET 2024 will inspire and stimulate further research and collaboration among scientists, engineers, and researchers worldwide. Working "With" Not "On" Disabled People: The Role of Hate Crime Research within the Community.

For many disabled people, violence can become an unwanted, yet ordinary part of everyday life. Often, these crimes are attributed to understandings of disabled people as vulnerable and largely, passive victims. Attending to the aims of this special issue, this paper aims to dismantle these stereotypes and attend to the unique ways that disabled people can resist and respond to hate crime through creative and collaborative research practices. Building upon this, I argue that there is a pressing need for hate studies researchers to work "with" and not "on" those who have experienced targeted violence. Working in this way builds upon long-standing efforts of disabled activists and disabilities studies researchers to challenge reductive research practices by working in more collective and inclusive ways. To demonstrate this, I reflect upon a project working in partnership with disabled people to create a disability hate crime toolkit. The toolkit, now published, shares accessible and informative resources that can be used to raise awareness about disability hate crime. While the focus of this paper is disability, I consider methods of collaboration, co-production and participation that can be drawn upon by researchers to respond to hate crime and interpersonal violence more broadly.

Scientific research productivity in urology: A 20-year bibliometric analysis in Latin America

Introduction and objectivesThe knowledge generated by scientific research is linked to the development of countries, as it provides the necessary resources to guarantee scientific progress and cost-effective healthcare. For this reason, our study analyzes the trends of scientific publication in urology in Latin America. MethodsA bibliometric analysis was performed. Data collection was carried out using the SCOPUS search engine in April 2023, and the search terms were defined by the authors, including the most common diseases in the specialty of urology. A descriptive analysis of the different characteristics, trends and scientific collaborations was performed. The collaboration networks were plotted using VOSviewer. ResultsFrom 2000 to 2021, Latin American publications in urology amounted to 9135 in scientific journals. Brazil is the country with the greatest scientific production (51.2%) and Chile has the greatest scientific production per million inhabitants. Of the total number of scientific publications, 51.1% were related to prostate cancer, 88.8% were written in English (and 50.2% had non-open access). The country with greatest collaborative research with Latin America was the United States. ConclusionsScientific output in urology in Latin America has increased substantially over the last 20 years. The most published topic is prostate cancer, most papers are written in English, and the United States takes first place regarding scientific collaboration. However, the proportion of the world's science originated in Latin America is still low and depends on Brazil.

Toward Understanding Research Evolution on Indirect Drivers of Ecosystem Change along the Interface of Protected and Non-Protected Lands

Against a backdrop of rapid environmental degradation and increasing pressures on natural resources, a broad list of innovations has emerged to support the vision of the post-2020 Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and strengthen regional and country-level biodiversity strategies along the interface of protected areas and non-protected lands. The success of these strategies depends in large part on science-informed consideration and approaches to the underlying and indirect drivers of change for natural systems and ecosystem services. This paper aims to inform future strategies and action plans for conservation efforts and sustainable practices globally and regionally, with a specific focus on Latin America’s environmental challenges. Bibliometric analysis, covering two decades from 2003 to 2023, focused on global and Latin American research trends related to the indirect drivers of change for natural systems and ecosystem services at the interface of protected and non-protected lands. Through structured analysis, key opportunities for increased collaboration, impact, and research focus are identified, highlighting the need to expand research collaboration strategies and reach, enhance research dissemination through open and equitable innovations, and strengthen capacity to the complex and interrelated challenges underlying accelerated change in natural systems, which affects biodiversity and ecosystem services.

The growth and diversity of the evidence base for the clubhouse model.

The Clubhouse Model is a long-standing form of psychosocial rehabilitation that has been in existence for over 75 years. Today, over 350 Clubhouse programs in 33 countries affiliate with Clubhouse International and operate as nonclinical community-based recovery centers for adults and young adults living with mental illness. Clubhouses provide a strengths-based approach to recovery and offer participants, referred to as members, a variety of supports and services including assistance with obtaining and maintaining community-based employment, education, housing, social integration, outreach and advocacy, wellness and health promotion activities, and linkages to medical and psychiatric services. There is evidence and support for the Clubhouse Model in improving quality of life and social functioning, reducing hospitalization(s) and/or psychiatric symptoms, and promoting employment. This special issue has nine articles that highlight ongoing research collaborations from across the globe that examine the impact of the Clubhouse Model on a variety of novel outcomes. While more research is needed, the articles in this special issue reflect the growth and diversity of the evidence base for the Clubhouse Model. Essential Advance Care Planning Intervention Features in Low-Income Communities: A Qualitative Study

ContextOlder adults with low socioeconomic status (SES) participate in advance care planning (ACP) at lower rates than those with higher SES. Community feedback is an essential component of intervention design for communities with fewer social and health resources to ensure that the intervention is relevant and meaningful. ObjectivesTo understand the perspectives for potential interventions, we aimed to qualitatively explore participant priorities for ACP intervention development. MethodsUsing a qualitative descriptive design, we recruited and conducted individual and one-time, semi-structured interviews with older adults (aged 50+) with low income (< $20,000/year) (n = 20), Recruitment methods included flyers and in-person recruitment and purposive and snowball sampling methods. Following a thematic analysis plan, themes emerged from recursive transcript review by two independent coders and inductive categorization of the most robust codes. ResultsTwo themes captured participants’ perspectives regarding ACP intervention development: 1) specialist advocacy and reliability and 2) person-centered communication. Older adults with low SES prioritize ACP communication that is driven by their goals and that is led by trustworthy specialists that advocate for their needs. ConclusionOur work highlights that intervention preferences were informed by the prior strain and struggle of waiting on other kinds of health and social services. We propose an adapted model for community research collaboration to promote equity in addition to practice and policy recommendations.

Research Trends on MoTrPAC and Exercise Science Applications

PURPOSE: Exercise plays a crucial role in maintaining human health and is widely recognized for its effectiveness in preventing and managing chronic diseases. However, the molecular mechanisms by which exercise exerts its beneficial effects on the body remain unclear. The Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium (MoTrPAC) is a collaborative research initiative that brings together multiple institutions and organizations to investigate the molecular mechanisms of exercise.METHODS: This article provides a comprehensive overview of the MoTrPAC, detailing its structure, research strategies, and methodologies. We reviewed the consortium’s primary research objectives, methodologies, key findings, and potential applications in exercise science. This analysis was conducted through a systematic review of online databases and search engines, including PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar.RESULTS: The MoTrPAC uses animal models and human studies to explore the physiological effects of exercise on various tissues. Research by the consortium has demonstrated that different types and intensities of exercise induce specific gene expression changes, activate diverse metabolic pathways, such as fatty acid oxidation, glucose metabolism, and protein synthesis, and restructure protein interaction networks in muscle tissue. These studies have identified novel biomarkers that can be used to assess the molecular effects of exercise.CONCLUSIONS: MoTrPAC significantly advances our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the effects of exercise. The consortium’s findings have the potential to inform the development of personalized exercise prescriptions and health management strategies. Future research should include more diverse populations and investigate the long-term effects of exercise to enhance our understanding of the profound impact of physical activity on human health.

Capacity development training workshop on crop simulation modelling and effects of climate risks on agricultural production systems in Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia (SEA) has experienced frequent floods and droughts, posing severe challenges for farmers, agricultural scientists and extension officers. Consequently, crop modelling has become imperative in developing agricultural production systems and making informed decisions at the field level. The Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT) can be effectively utilised at both farm and regional levels to assess the influence of climate change on production across different spatial scales. Moreover, it supports planning adaptation strategies tailored to the needs of farmers. The one-week hands-on training workshop aims to enhance technical and scientific proficiency in crop simulation modelling and evaluate the effects of climate risks on agricultural production systems in Southeast Asian countries such as Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Vietnam. A total of 62 participants from the selected countries, including Singapore and Ethiopia, were joined in the training. Among them were 48 male and 24 female individuals, comprising researchers, students, scientists, academicians and extension officers. The participants predominantly acquired knowledge of crop simulation modelling techniques by utilising existing case examples and lecture materials from the DSSAT foundation. Furthermore, the training workshops establish research networks and collaborations among the participant countries, facilitating the exchange of scientific knowledge related to innovative farm management practices and fostering interactions between local agricultural communities and scientists.

Cognitive Dysfunction in the Addictions (CDiA): A Neuron to Neighbourhood Collaborative Research Program on Executive Dysfunction and Functional Outcomes in Outpatients Seeking Treatment for Addiction.

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are pressing global public health problems. Executive functions (EFs) are prominently featured in mechanistic models of addiction. However, there remain significant gaps in our understanding of EFs in SUDs, including the dimensional relationships of EFs to underlying neural circuits, molecular biomarkers, disorder heterogeneity, and functional ability. To improve health outcomes for people with SUDs, interdisciplinary clinical, preclinical and health services research is needed to inform policies and interventions aligned with biopsychosocial models of addiction. Here, we introduce Cognitive Dysfunction in the Addictions (CDiA), an integrative team-science and translational research program, which aims to fill these knowledge gaps and facilitate research discoveries to enhance treatments for people living with SUDs. The CDiA Program comprises seven complementary interdisciplinary projects that aim to progress understanding of EF in SUDs and investigate new biological treatment approaches. The projects draw on a diverse sample of adults aged 18-60 (target N=400) seeking treatment for addiction, who are followed prospectively over one year to identify EF domains crucial to recovery. Projects 1-3 investigate SUD symptoms, brain circuits, and blood biomarkers and their associations with both EF domains (inhibition, working memory, and set-shifting) and functional outcomes (disability, quality of life). Projects 4 and 5 evaluate interventions for addiction and their impacts on EF: a clinical trial of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and a preclinical study of potential new pharmacological treatments in rodents. Project 6 links EF to healthcare utilization and is supplemented with a qualitative investigation of EF-related barriers to treatment engagement for those with substance use concerns. Project 7 uses innovative whole-person modeling to integrate the multi-modal data generated across projects, applying clustering and deep learning methods to identify patient subtypes and drive future cross-disciplinary initiatives. The CDiA program has promise to bring scientific domains together to uncover the diverse ways in which EFs are linked to SUD severity and functional recovery. These findings, supported by emerging clinical, preclinical, health service, and whole-person modeling investigations, will facilitate future discoveries about cognitive dysfunction in addiction and could enhance the future clinical care of individuals seeking treatment for SUDs.

Collaborative research networks in Higher Education An integrative review

This study investigates the determining factors for the success of collaborative research networks in higher education, focusing on the formation, development, and operation of these networks. Despite the growing recognition of the importance of collaborative networks, there is a lack of studies that comprehensively identify the critical factors for their success. Utilizing an integrative literature review, the research was conducted in the ERIC, Web of Science (WOS), and Scopus databases. The main research question is: what factors influence the success of collaborative research networks in higher education? The findings indicate that the effectiveness of these networks is influenced by structural, functional, and evaluative factors. The integration of information and communication technologies (ICT) is essential for effective collaboration, allowing geographically dispersed teams to work together efficiently. The study concludes that public policies that value collaborative networks are necessary to promote an environment conducive to integration and scientific collaboration. This study contributes to the understanding of the elements that influence the success of collaborative research networks, highlighting the importance of integration, diversity, funding, and knowledge sharing, with significant implications for the formulation of policies and practices in higher education.

Bibliometric Analysis on Precision Agriculture Technology

This study employs a bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer to visualize the authorship network within the domain of precision agriculture, identifying key researchers and their collaborative relationships. By mapping the connections based on publications from a specified time period, the analysis highlights the central figures like Erickson, B, who play pivotal roles in the network and reveals the interlinkages among various contributors. The study provides insights into the structural dynamics of research collaborations and elucidates the influence patterns among the scholars. Despite the inherent limitations such as database selection bias and the static nature of the bibliometric snapshot, the results offer valuable implications for enhancing research collaboration, academic planning, and strategic positioning within the scholarly community. This approach not only aids in recognizing influential entities and emerging talents but also assists institutions and funders in making informed decisions that could drive impactful research in precision agriculture.

Identifying authorial roles in research: A Kano model-based bibliometric analysis for the Journal of Medicine (Baltimore) 2023.

The landscape of research roles within academic journals often remains uncharted territory, with authorial contributions frequently reduced to linear hierarchies (e.g., professor and assistant professor). The Kano model, traditionally used in customer satisfaction research, offers a nuanced framework for identifying the multifaceted roles of authors in scholarly publications. This study utilizes the Kano model to dissect and categorize the roles of authors in the medicine field. To conform to the hypothesis, China is the research leader while the US is the research collaborator, as reflected in the publications of the journal of Medicine (Baltimore) in the year 2023. We conducted a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of all research articles published in the journal of Medicine (Baltimore) in 2023. The Kano model was applied to classify authors into 5 categories reflective of their research roles: followers, leaders, partners, contributors, and collaborators. Data on author publications and co-authorship networks with multi-author rates (MARs) were analyzed to assign Kano categories based on the authorship positions of first and corresponding authors. Descriptive statistics and network analysis tools were used to interpret the data, including radar plots, geographical maps, and Kano diagrams. The analysis covered 1976 articles, uncovering a complex network of author roles that extends beyond the conventional binary distinction of lead and supporting authors (i.e., leading, and following researchers). A research leader in China and a collaborator in the US were conformed to support the hypothesis, based on their publications (1148 vs 51) and MARs (12.20% vs 19.61%). The Kano classification was visually adapted to classify authors (or entities) into 5 categories. The combined choropleth and geographical network maps were illustrated to identify author roles in research briefly. The Kano model serves as an effective tool for uncovering the diverse contributions of authors in medical research. By moving beyond the lead and follower dichotomy, this study highlights the intricate ecosystem of authorial roles, emphasizing the importance of each in advancing knowledge within the field of medicine. Future application of the Kano model could foster a more collaborative and inclusive recognition of contributions across various disciplines.

The paper begins by examining the role of data analytics in driving research insights, predictive planning, and collaboration, ultimately improving publication metrics and research impact. It then delves into how data analytics can streamline administrative processes, enhance student outcomes, and optimize resource management. The paper also addresses the significant challenges and barriers to integration, including concerns over data privacy, technical and organizational hurdles, and financial constraints. Finally, the paper offers recommendations for future directions, emphasizing strategic integration, capacity building, fostering a data-driven culture, and leveraging emerging technologies like AI and real-time data processing. These insights provide a comprehensive framework for academic institutions aiming to harness the power of data analytics to advance their research and operational goals.

Heterogeneity in nomenclature and abbreviation usage for anti-synthetase syndrome: a scoping review.

Anti-synthetase syndrome constitutes a dynamically evolving subset of Idiopathic Inflammatory Myopathy, however, the nomenclature and abbreviations for this syndrome are plagued by heterogeneity, leading to lack of consistency in literature. The objective of this study is to evaluate existing diversity in disease names and abbreviations, with a future goal to develop consensus on the nomenclature. A scoping review format was used for analysis. A comprehensive PUBMED search was conducted from January 1, 1984 (the initial description of anti-synthetase autoantibodies) to November 30, 2023, encompassing all pertinent articles published within this timeframe. Search terms included, ((antisynthetase syndrome) OR (anti synthetase syndrome)) OR (anti-synthetase syndrome)). The articles were screened for presence of terminology and abbreviations used. The search yielded 936 items with the specified terms. After excluding 303 irrelevant articles and 58 non-English publications, the remaining n = 575 articles underwent detailed review of the abstract and full article. Out of n = 575, 54.7% (n = 314) used 'antisynthetase syndrome' and 43.4% (n = 249) preferred 'anti-synthetase syndrome' with few novel names also. Among these, 394 articles used abbreviations while 181 did not. Most utilized term was ASS; in 64.7% (n = 255), followed AS in 11.9% (n = 47), ASSD in 9.9% (n = 39) and ASyS in 7.6% (n = 30). A discordance in nomenclature is evident, with about half using antisynthetase syndrome and other half using anti-synthetase syndrome. Moreover, significant heterogeneity exists in abbreviation use aswell. There is a pressing need to bridge this disparity and establish a uniform identifier for the disease with an objective to develop greater coherence in future research, educational initiatives, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Clinician Wellbeing and Mental Health Assessment Across Two Acute Care Hospitals During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The purposes of this study were to determine whether positive work environments affect clinician wellbeing and mental health, and to identify participants' priority interventions to improve clinician wellbeing. This study was designed to determine the potential benefit of modifying the aforementioned factors for clinicians and hospitals to impact positive patient outcomes. The SARS-CoV-2 virus pandemic has become one of the leading causes of death in the United States and worldwide, and has exacerbated widespread burnout among health care professionals. This has resulted in negative collateral implications for the stability of the clinician workforce. A Clinician Wellbeing study (CWS) was launched in two Magnet®-designated hospitals in the southeast. The CWS was part of a multi-site collaborative research project led by the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research (CHOPR) at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. A cross-sectional observational study design was implemented. Data were collected through anonymous surveys of 708 registered nurses (RNs) and advanced practice providers (APPs) working in two Magnet hospitals in the southeastern United States. Each participant completed 8 surveys. Clinicians' self-reported level of burnout was higher for both RNs and APPs at Emory University Hospital than Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital including intent to leave and dissatisfaction with their jobs. RNs and APPs self-reported their overall health to be good or excellent and they reported sleep quality as fair. Both groups in both hospitals indicated that they experienced anxiety, depression, and stress. The APPs reported a higher percent that their work did not leave enough time for personal and family life. Data also indicated that the primary work environment concern was related to inadequate nurse staffing. The data illuminated opportunities for the two hospitals to employ continuous improvement interventions to positively transform the work environment.
