SHARING KNOWLEDGE THROUGH OPEN AND DISTANCE E-LEARNING EDUCATION: GLOBALIZING UNIVERSITAS TERBUKA

Universitas Terbuka (UT) as an open and distance e-learning institution in Indonesia, has widely intensify the interconnectivity on international stages. UT adopts international academic standard and pave its vision “to provide access to a world quality higher education for all through open and distance higher education”. Although, most of UT students do not yet have access to adequate internet connection, UT has been a reference for other open education institutions and was acknowledged by the global community to have been succeeded in managing distance education system. By outlining the concept of education diplomacy creates an explanation that the growth of globalized educational collaboration increases the importance of conveying people-to-people engagement through e-learning education system. In previous years, UT has aimed the mission toward an ASEAN distance education collaboration and offer an Open Online Certificate Program through MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses). The aim is to share knowledge among Indonesian and its counterparts in ASEAN.

Research and Practice on School-Enterprise Collaboration in Distance Education

In view of the drawbacks of “Three plus One” model in school-enterprise collaboration, we apply modern distance education in school-enterprise collaboration. This paper points out the problems in this model and its solutions. We put the junior students into practice and make good results.

International Collaboration in Distance Education in Sub-Saharan Africa

This chapter examines international collaboration in distance education in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), focusing on efforts aimed at utilizing technology. It identifies a number of significant collaborative endeavors. The collaborative efforts observed have a similar goal of pooling together ICT resources and expertise towards improving educational outcomes. The prevalence of teacher education and training across the initiatives, in the context of the Millennium Development Goals, is noted. Institutions outside Africa are actively involved in the funding and provision of expertise. Also, the AVU consortium model seems to be a viable approach to collaboration, with notable results seen. With the challenges facing technology-focused collaboration, such as a lack of enabling policies and the digital divide, the chapter suggests that African countries and institutions should pursue a culture of change and be more flexible. More formal training in distance education, utilizing Africans in the Diaspora and promoting dialogue across international spectrums are also recommended.

Using E-mail to Foster Collaboration in Distance Education

This paper reports on a case study in which an e-mail system was used as a tool to foster collaboration among a group of students enrolled in an educational management course offered by the Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK). It focuses on a set of interview data and, in analysing the interview data, it takes into account the sociocultural perspective on learning in relation to the use of computer-mediated communication in education. The aim of this study is to draw out implications for improved practices in managing online discussion groups in contexts such as the OUHK.

"A satellite primer on tuberculosis:" a collaboration in distance education.

"A Satellite Primer on Tuberculosis" was offered as a distance-based certificate course on tuberculosis (TB) fundamentals to a national audience of over 5,000 individuals. The course was a collaborative effort of a school of public health, a state health department, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Instruction was provided through print-based self-study modules that were complemented by live, interactive satellite conferences. Course completers, over 70 percent of whom were nurses and employees of public health departments, scored significantly higher on a course posttest than on a pretest, and the vast majority felt the course provided valuable training.

Collaboration in distance education between nursing schools and hospitals.

Interactive television (ITV) is being used by increasing numbers of nursing schools and hospitals to provide educational access to geographically diverse learners and nurse employees. ITV-related research suggests that learner outcomes and satisfaction with such distance education courses are similar to those associated with the traditional classroom. The authors conducted an evaluation of a major nursing school's nursing telecourse program (NTP) to assess collaborative efforts with hospitals and regional campuses. The respondents, 15 site coordinators, were generally satisfied with the operational aspects of the NTP. Concerns raised by respondents included classroom space availability, operational costs, library resources, and communication equipment and processes. These stakeholders' perspectives were viewed as valuable in identifying problems and making improvements in the school's NTP.

Collaboration in distance education: From local to international perspectives

Abstract This article explores the various levels of collaboration found within distance education contexts. A continuum reflecting the local to international levels of collaboration is outlined; descriptions of the components found along the continuum are provided, and the implications for change in higher education institutions engaged in distance education are explored. Necessary modifications in structure, policies, reward systems, and instructional skills are identified and discussed.
