A process making use of a pneumatically-propelled metallic mixture into the open top of a rimming ingot and known as shot capping has been successfully applied to a significant tonnage of low carbon rimmed steel. The advantages of the scheme are the elimination of water and a clean, rapid, and efficient method of sealing off the ingot top. Some measurable advantage in reduced segregation in the topmost portion of the ingot reflects in improved mechanical test values. The complete evaluation of cold-rolled sheet product in all types of draws is still being evaluated. An economic comparison, including intangibles, could well favor the practice. Additional production and evaluation are continuing.
