A Comprehensive Analysis of Logistics Strategy and Cold Chain Technology Innovation –Literature Review (Case Study: Paxel Indonesia)

The country's economic development has a big influence on the growth and contribution of the logistics sector, especially transportation and warehousing, one of which is influenced by shopping behavior and customer lifestyle. One type of logistics distribution pattern is the cold chain, which requires companies to have a logistics strategy and cold chain technology innovation to meet customer requirements. This literature review aims to comprehensively analyze the impact of implementing logistics strategies and the use of technology in cold logistics which is different from dry logistics carried out in one of the logistics service provider companies. Evaluation of the influence of environmental factors, temperature and customer needs on design strategy choices will also be discussed in this paper. Apart from that, the literature review will answer the impact of implementing logistics strategies and supply chain technology on the quality and safety of frozen food products.

Cold-tolerance mechanisms in foodborne pathogens: Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes as examples.

The cold chain is an integral part of the modern food industry. Low temperatures can effectively alleviate food loss and the transmission of foodborne diseases caused by microbial reproduction. However, recent reports have highlighted shortcomings in the current cold chain technology's ability to prevent and control cold-tolerant foodborne pathogens. Furthermore, it has been observed that certain cold-chain foods have emerged as new sources of infection for foodborne disease outbreaks. Consequently, there is a pressing need to enhance control measures targeting cold-tolerant pathogens within the existing cold chain system. This paper aims to review the recent advancements in understanding the cold tolerance mechanisms of key model organisms, identify key issues in current research, and explore the potential of utilizing big data and omics technology in future studies.

Fresh product e-retailer’s sales strategy choice: free shipping, package, or combined strategy?

Cold chain technology and online platform have enabled the rapid development of fresh food e-commerce. However, most fresh product e-retailers are losing money. This paper aims to answer the questions: Can the free shipping strategy, package strategy, and combined package and free shipping strategy (i.e., KF strategy) improve a fresh product e-retailer’s performance, and which strategy is the most effective? By deriving the optimal decisions of customers and/or the e-retailer under different strategies, we find that the e-retailer should adopt the free shipping strategy or the KF strategy if the shipping cost is higher than the threshold. Furthermore, some managerial insights are obtained. First, compared with the general strategy, the e-retailer needs to further reduce the price when the shipping cost is lower than the threshold despite bearing the shipping cost under the free shipping strategy or KF strategy. Second, the free shipping strategy or KF strategy is generally used to increase the customer’s single order quantity. However, if the shipping cost is higher than the threshold, the e-retailer should use these two strategies to reduce the single order quantity. Lastly, if the e-retailer wants to reduce its average logistics cost, the package strategy is a better choice.

The Development of the Optimal Harvesting Model of an Offshore Fishery Supply Chain Based on a Single Vessel

This study delves into the offshore fishing industry in Taiwan, emphasizing the significance of the aquatic product market, supply chain development, and the maturity of cold chain technology. Taiwan’s geographical advantage of being surrounded by the sea provides a thriving environment for marine resources and migratory fish. This study is motivated by the increasing demand for diverse fish products, driven by the growing need for high-quality protein. Recognizing the importance of meeting this demand, this study aims to investigate the capacity of logistics systems and cold storage in the offshore fishery industry, particularly under conditions of uncertainty. To tackle the optimization challenges prevalent in the offshore fishery supply chain, this study employs the bat algorithm (BA), a metaheuristic algorithm inspired by the remarkable echolocation behavior of bats. Additionally, a systematic literature review methodology is utilized to gather relevant articles and establish a comprehensive understanding of the study domain. This study culminates in proposing an optimized fishing model for the offshore fishery supply chain, highlighting the significance of evaluating supply chain value from a management perspective and identifying existing deficiencies and bottlenecks in current research. By focusing on optimizing the offshore fishery supply chain, this study aims to enhance the industry’s efficiency and effectiveness, providing valuable insights and recommendations to improve the capacity of logistics systems and cold storage. Furthermore, this study presents the results of the BA, showcasing its effectiveness in approaching optimization challenges, thereby validating its utility for the offshore fishery industry. Sensitivity analysis reveals the potential for higher profits by raising the inventory limit of the manufacturer, enabling the supplier to provide materials to more profitable trading partners. While this study is based on a revenue and cost model, it acknowledges that the objectives and constraints would become more complex in varying logistic system circumstances. The future study aims to expand the scale of the model and incorporate practical cases to further enhance its applicability.

Overview of Food Preservation and Traceability Technology in the Smart Cold Chain System.

According to estimates by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), about a third of all food produced for human consumption in the world is lost or wasted-approximately 1.3 billion tons. Among this, the amount lost during the storage stage is about 15-20% for vegetables and 10-15% for fruits. It is 5-10% for vegetables and fruits during the distribution stage, resulting in a large amount of resource waste and economic losses. At the same time, the global population affected by hunger has reached 828 million, exceeding one-tenth of the total global population. The improvement of the cold chain system will effectively reduce the amount of waste and loss of food during the storage and transportation stages. Firstly, this paper summarizes the concept and development status of traditional preservation technology; environmental parameter sensor components related to fruit and vegetable spoilage in the intelligent cold chain system; the data transmission and processing technology of the intelligent cold chain system, including wireless network communication technology (WI-FI) and cellular mobile communication; short-range communication technology, and the low-power, wide-area network (LPWAN). The smart cold chain system is regulated and optimized through the Internet of Things, blockchain, and digital twin technology to achieve the sustainable development of smart agriculture. The deep integration of artificial intelligence and traditional preservation technology provides new ideas and solutions for the problem of food waste in the world. However, the lack of general standards and the high cost of the intelligent cold chain system are obstacles to the development of the intelligent cold chain system. Governments and researchers at all levels should strive to highly integrate cold chain systems with artificial intelligence technology, establish relevant regulations and standards for cold chain technology, and actively promote development toward intelligence, standardization, and technology.

Inundative, Dry-Powder, Inhaled Measles Vaccination to Prevent Deaths of Young Children in War-torn Regions.

Children living in war-torn and geographically remote regions often die from measles due to undervaccination. Protective community immunity could be safely improved through the comprehensive use of small, inexpensive, easy-to-use, dry-powder aerosolized measles vaccination inhalers. Influential local community members could be engaged to provide risk counseling and inform their peers of measles risks to inspire vaccine uptake. Vaccination by inhaled live attenuated measles vaccine has been shown to be safe and protective among several million research subjects and omits (1) needles, syringes, glass vials, and specialized disposal systems; (2) deadly vaccine reconstitution errors; (3) cold chain technology to protect temperature-sensitive vaccine; (4) vaccine wastage associated with suboptimal use of multidose vials; (5) trained vaccinators; (6) food, housing, and transportation costs associated with centralized vaccination campaigns; and (7) risk of violence to vaccinators and associated staff. All elements for inhaler-based measles vaccination are readily available. Dry-powder measles vaccine inhalers can be assembled and distributed to save lives.

Cold supply chain of leafy green vegetables: a social network analysis approach

PurposeCold supply chain technology is critical for extending the shelf life of perishable leafy green vegetables. This study aims to investigate the concept of managing leafy green products using cold supply chain technology and visualise the findings.Design/methodology/approachUsing expert interviews and data visualisation approaches, this study examines how organisations deal with the complexity of cold supply chain processes and networks. Thematic data analysis was conducted. Two types of software were used to accomplish the research objectives. The first software used AntConc version 3.5.8 with word frequency (N-gram) analysis, whereas the second software, VOSViewer offered co-occurrence network visualisation and cluster analysis.FindingsThe findings show that the appropriate design of cold chain technology is critical in ensuring the freshness and quality of leafy green vegetables. The primary goal of managing the complexity of the cold supply chain is to achieve product freshness and energy efficiency. Regardless of the importance of energy efficiency, cold supply chains require warehouse management solutions for transportation and storage.Practical implicationsThis study found that proper design and selection of appropriate technology in the cold supply chain have driven the companies to improve the firms’ competitive advantage while delivering the best quality of perishable leafy green food products. In addition, the freshness, quality, safety, and health of leafy green vegetables will be determined by the company’s capacity to handle long-distance transportation and select the appropriate distribution channels and storage. Warehouse management system technology was found to be secondary compared to cold chain technology, although distribution and warehousing practices are critical for supply chain performance.Originality/valueThis study has established the conceptual indicators based on best practices and outcomes for the cold supply chain. This study argued that cold supply chain management and performance should be monitored independently. Furthermore, the theory of technological adoption can be expanded to include product nature as a driver. Finally, this study has established cold chain best practices based on a perishable supply chain perspective. The findings of this study can promote healthy foods to solve zero hunger and achieve sustainable development goals. Although this study demonstrates that technology improves supply chain practises, cold storage and logistics benefit the most from technological advancements. In contrast, non-cold supply chains benefit from technology-driven improvements in performance.

Location optimization of fresh food e-commerce front warehouse.

The ongoing emergence of COVID-19 and the maturation of cold chain technology, have aided in the rapid development of the fresh produce e-commerce industry. Taking into account the characteristics of consumers' demand for fresh products, this paper constructs a location allocation model of a front warehouse for fresh e-commerce with the objective of minimizing the total cost. An improved immune optimization algorithm is proposed in this paper, and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated by a real case study. The results show that the improved immune optimization algorithm outperforms the traditional genetic algorithm in terms of solution accuracy; the proposed location model can effectively help fresh produce e-commerce enterprises open new front-end warehouses when demand is increasing, as well as provide optimal economic decision-making for front warehouse layout.

Research on the Evaluation of E-Commerce Cold Chain Food Consumption Based on Big Data

In response to the problems of low efficiency and high cost of offline questionnaires, lack of keyword-consumer attitude correlation in online comment analysis, and little help for optimization solutions, an opinion analysis and improvement evaluation model based on sentiment analysis and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) document topic generation model is proposed. Using cold-chain food as the research object, a custom Python program was used to crawl the online consumer reviews about cold-chain food from Jingdong, a mainstream Chinese e-commerce company. A total of 70,134 reviews were obtained, including 65,535 valid reviews, which were analyzed by the LDA topic model and SnowNLP sentiment analysis to obtain the influencing factors and specific scores that affect consumer satisfaction. Then the importance ranking of the influencing factors was obtained by combining the word frequency and scores. Finally, based on the rankings and the reasons generated, suggestions are made for developing products and services for cold chain food. From theory and practice, it provides a reference basis for developing cold chain technology and consumer behavior research.

Recent advances in emerging techniques for freezing and thawing on aquatic products' quality

Aquatic products are favored by the majority of consumers because of their low fat, high protein, particularly low cholesterol. In recent years, consumers are demanding the high nutrition, freshness, and safety of aquatic products. Therefore, efficient preservation technologies are all important. Freezing can extend the shelf life and inhibit the seasonal fluctuations in different species. Thawing is an important step for aquatic products. Repeated freezing–thawing usually occurs because of the imperfection of cold chain technology and temperature fluctuations in warehousing, transportation, and retail. These can affect the quality of aquatic products, including water holding capacity, texture, total volatile basic nitrogen, k value, protein oxidation, and lipid oxidation. Emerging freezing and thawing technologies can improve the quality of aquatic products. This review introduces the influences of freezing, thawing, and repeated freezing-thawing on the quality of aquatic products and the development of freezing and thawing technologies for aquatic products. Practical applications Freezing, thawing, and repeated freezing–thawing affect the quality of aquatic products, including water holding capacity, texture profile analysis, lipid oxidation, and protein oxidation. In recent years, emerging freezing and thawing technologies have been found by more and more researchers. These technologies can improve the quality of aquatic products.

A fuzzy decision framework of lean-agile-green (LAG) practices for sustainable vaccine supply chain

PurposeThe already-strained vaccine supply chain (VSC) of the expanded program for immunization (EPI) require a more robust and structured distribution network for pandemic/outbreak vaccination due to huge volume demand and time constraint. In this paper, a lean-agile-green (LAG) practices approach is proposed to improve the operational, economic and environmental efficiency of the VSC.Design/methodology/approachA fuzzy decision framework of importance performance analysis (IPA)–analytical hierarchy process (AHP)–technique for order for preference by similarity in ideal solution (TOPSIS) has been presented in this paper to prioritize the LAG practices on the basis of the influence on performance indicators. Sensitivity analysis is carried out to check the robustness of the presented model.FindingsThe derived result indicates that sustainable packaging, coordination among supply chain stakeholders and cold chain technology improvement are among the top practices affecting most of the performance parameters of VSC. The sensitivity analysis reveals that the priority of practices is highly dependent on the weightage of performance indicators.Practical implicationsThis study's finding will help policymakers reframe strategies for sustainable VSC (SVSC) by including new management practices that can handle regular immunization programs as well as emergency mass vaccination.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first study that proposes the LAG framework for SVSC. The IPA–Fuzzy AHP (FAHP)–Fuzyy TOPSIS (FTOPSIS) is also a novel combination in decision-making.

STATUS, CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES OF THE COLD CHAIN SYSTEM IN KENYA: THE CASE OF THE FISHERIES SECTOR IN LAMU AND MOMBASA COUNTIES

Purpose: This study examined the status, challenges and opportunities of the fishing sub-sector in Mombasa and Lamu counties in Kenya. The study examined the various opportunities cold chain have in development of the fisheries sector. The study zeroed on factors like the economic, administrative, financial, technological and cultural attributes that influence the efficiency of the cold chain.
 Methodology: Literature reviewed showed that shortage of reliable and adequate cold chain facilities in sub-Saharan Africa is one of the main causes of losses of perishable products however there’s little documentation of the study on the status, challenges and opportunities of cold chain technologies in the fishing sector in Kenya. The study adopted a descriptive research design. The study focusses on 2 counties in Coastal Kenya i.e. Mombasa and Lamu Counties. The justification for selecting the 2 sites was that Lamu fisheries industry is extensive and highly developed, Lamu receives the highest number of fish harvest. Primary data was obtained through questionnaires and personal interviews. The personal interviews took 5 days in Mombasa and 5 days in Lamu. The data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences; SPSS version 20.
 Results: The main result of the study was showed that cold chain is widely used and required in the advancement of fishing in all the study sites. The study also revealed that Lamu County is more dependent on cold chain for fishing to earn profit for the sector as it final market is Mombasa a distance of over 200km away. The needs of the type, capacity and partnership is different from one Beach Management Unit to the other. This is primarily due to factor such fish catch, governance dynamics, access and affordability of cold chain technology and distance to the market.
 Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: The study indicated that there has been deliberate effort by the two tier government – National and County to invest in Cold chain however this has been faced with myriad challenges where this installed equipment are either not operating efficiently or have stalled. The study indicated and showed that there needs to be systematic approach when selecting and managing cold chain equipment in the fishing sector.

Business model innovation risk factors based on grounded theory: A multiple‐case analysis of cold chain logistics companies in China

The article focuses on the risk factors of the business model innovation, and the interaction mechanism between risk factors and business model innovation. The grounded theory was used to analyze the business model innovation of four cold chain logistics enterprises. Results reveal that the main risk factors of business model innovation in cold chain logistics are management, technical, and environmental risks. The risk factors suggest that cold chain logistics enterprises need to optimize the internal management to improve the innovation ability and strengthen the development of cold chain technology to improve market competitive.

Research on Fresh Products for Fresh E-commerce

At present, opportunities and challenges coexist in the development of e-commerce industry, which develops rapidly, but there are also many problems. Among them, the offline cold chain logistics that puzzles fresh e-commerce has not been a good solution, the key reason is that there are too many uncontrollable factors of logistics distribution, storage and fresh, and lack of high quality cold storage to meet the needs of e-commerce. This paper analyzes a series of problems of cold storage from the aspects of temperature, space location, packaging design and distribution. Finally, we can solve these problems through temperature control technology, bar code technology and advanced cold chain technology.

When risks need attention: adoption of green supply chain initiatives in the pharmaceutical industry

The pharmaceutical industry is very important in delivering life-saving products/services to society. There are many ways for materials/products/services concerned with pharmaceuticals to influence the environment; these include improper disposal of pills/tablets by patients, expired and unused medications, improper release of drugs by pharmacies or household sewage mixed with surplus drugs. In view of this, the present work seeks to integrate green supply chain (GSC) concepts in the pharmaceutical sector in a developing economy Indian context. In so doing, managers need to determine the potential risks in adopting GSC initiatives to achieve sustainability in operational perspectives. In this sense, this work seeks to distinguish the potential risks in adopting GSC initiatives within the pharmaceutical industry. This work uses a literature review and fuzzy Delphi approach in finalising the risks. This research also uses fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) for prioritisation of the risks under vague and unclear surroundings. According to the findings, cold chain technology and supply risks categories are highly prioritised. This work can assist practising managers and government authorities in effectively developing and managing GSC initiatives in line with sustainable development goals in the context of the pharmaceutical industry. Finally, a sensitivity test is applied to evaluate the stability of ranking of risks.

The international transport of temperature-sensitive products is an essential link between producers and consumers. The critical requirement of temperature-sensitive cargo is to deliver the products in the same condition/quality as they were shipped. Advanced postharvest technology and cold chain technology are essential to reduce food waste and to maintain high standards of safety and quality. Insulated containers are used to maintain a certain temperature for the products inside. Insulated containers are usually used to transport temperature-sensitive cargo a short distance since the insulated containers do not require a power supply. The high-insulated container has several advantages compared to a reefer container or air transportation. It can be utilized as a medium supplement between the reefer container with high logistics costs and the dry container which has no insulation performance in transportation of cold chain products. The high-insulated container shows moderate performance of conventional dry and reefer containers. The high-insulated container is economical as they are competitive on TSR and short-distance shipping routes. It has been investigated that the development of high-insulated containers would benefit both the shippers and the carriers in that they could provide new transport services.

Study on Optimization Strategy of Kiwifruit Distribution in Dujiangyan

Kiwi fruit industry in Dujiangyan has a certain size and influence after decades of development. But due to the lack of distribution management, the backward logistics technology, and the complex distribution channel links, the fruit loss rate is high, the efficiency is low, the household income is affected, and the quality and flavor can’t be guaranteed, so there has a great significance to develop the logistics distribution of the Kiwi fruit of Dujiangyan. This thesis, starting from the basic concept of logistics and distribution of agricultural products, analyzes the current situation of distribution, points out the complex distribution channel links, lack of cold-chain technology, low degree of distribution information, and lack of high-end logistics talents, which affect the distribution efficiency. Combining with the actual situation of Dujiangyan, from optimizing logistics distribution channels, developing cold-chain logistics technology, strengthening the construction of logistics information, cultivating high-end logistics talents, this thesis proposes some countermeasures to accelerate the development of kiwi fruit logistics distribution of Dujiangyan.

Study on Cold Chain Technology Investment Decision of Dual Channel Aquatic Supply Chain Under the Background of Hayes Road

The Maritime Silk Road strategy brings more market opportunities to Zhanjiang's aquatic export trade, and further challenges to the quality and safety of aquatic products. As an effective technology to solve the problem of aquatic products safety in export trade, cold chain technology is designed to solve the problem of decision-making on cold chain technology in aquaculture enterprises. In this paper, a dual channel fishery supply chain is taken as the object. The investment model method is used to analyze the situation of the producer / retailer joint investment or non investment cold chain technology, and the influence of cold chain technology on the dual channel aquaculture supply chain investment and the problem of the coordination of the dual channel supply chain under the multiparty joint investment are studied. The research shows that the increase of the electronic commerce channel and the increase of food safety risk increases the sales price of electronic commerce channels and traditional retail channels, while the increase of the traditional retail channels of aquatic products corruption and food safety risks only increases the sale price of their own channels, and it will affect the sale of electronic commerce channels. If the cost of cold chain technology is lower than the cost of aquatic product corruption or food safety, cold chain technology can reduce the price of traditional retail channels and electronic commerce channels and increase the total market demand. This paper provides a new perspective for the application of cold chain technology, and also has a certain guiding significance for practice.

Study on the Improvement of Fresh Electricity Suppliers Cold Chain Logistics Service Quality

Improvement of service quality in cold chain logistics of fresh electricity suppliers has great significance to reduce logistics costs, get access to vast number of customer groups and enhance core competitiveness. This paper uses SIPOC (Suppliers, Input, Process, Output, Customers) model to draw the fresh electricity suppliers cold chain logistics service flow chart, by using the fishbone diagram to analyze the influential factors based on the mastery of fresh electricity suppliers cold chain logistics service flow. Finally, this paper puts forward 6 measures to improve the fresh electricity suppliers cold chain logistics service quality: to strengthen staff training and improve service awareness; to improve logistics equipment and develop cold chain technology; to improve the material supply and meet customer demand; to optimize the distribution route and develop the intelligent logistics; to carry out lean management and reduce logistics cost; to make cold chain logistics service quality management system and strengthen quality control and supervision.
